!![=YMMVs=] for the first series:
* AlasPoorScrappy: Cypher was very unpopular because his power, being able to understand any language, was considered to be [[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway underwhelming and unsuitable for an action-oriented series]]. However, when he was killed off in a HeroicSacrifice, people felt ''real'' bad.
* FanonDiscontinuity:
** Young X-Men is ignored by fans and Marvel, given how Marc Guggenheim didn't give a fuck and pissed off Kyle and Yost and fans of New X-Men/New Mutants with the stories he wrote.
** X-Force is ignored by hardcore ''New Mutant'' fans, which led to the Well New Mutants series getting hated on, by those who were pissed off that certain members (Boom Boom and Rictor) were not allowed near the book and generally ignored.
%%** Boom Boom/Cannonball's relationship in the Wells/Carey/Abnett and Lanning run.
* HeartwarmingInHindsight: The HoYay subtext between Dani and Rahne becomes this due to their AdaptationalSexuality in the [[Film/TheNewMutants film adaptation]].
* HollywoodHomely: Skids was considered "ugly" by the morlocks. This, of course, is because the Morlocks are all hideous and consider her a freak among freaks.
* HoYay:
** Between Shatterstar and Rictor. They were supposed to be depicted as best friends, but their relationship seemed too intimate for that. A couple of decades later, they canonically became one of Marvel's most prominent gay couples.
** Illyana towards Kitty. Kitty disliked most of the New Mutants, and Illyana was often the team's token evil member. But they clearly loved each other, they often shared living quarters, and could relate to each other in ways they could not with most of the other mutants. Several fans view the depiction as closer to them being soulmates than roommates.
* MisBlamed:
** Louise Simonson for Cypher's death. Artist Brett Blevin was the driving force for killing Doug off, manipulating Louise to think no one liked the polarizing character and that fans would cheer his death, which was actually [[AlasPoorScrappy the opposite]].
** Rob Liefeld gets this for Warlock. The character was killed as the transition to X-Force started, but it was Bob Harras who actually gave the kill order due to him never liking Warlock and wanting him dead.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Pierce, in the New Mutants origin story, orders the death of Dani's grandfather and has his men try to kill each of the New Mutants who were, at the time, teenagers who had only just discovered their powers.
** The Ani-Mator proves he is irredeemable by killing Cypher.
** Empath used his powers to take advantage of various people, whether personally or by proxy, in the original Claremont books.
* TheScrappy:
** Gossamyr, whose unpopularity with fans resulted her to be PutOnABus after her brief time as a member of the team, following her HeelFaceTurn.
** Bird Boy is probably the most extreme, being an imbecilic half-animal who derailed the book into whacky antics and over-eating. He's actually one of the most-accurate in-continuity versions of the Jackovasaurs from ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark''. At least he was rapidly PutOnABus.
** An entire ''team'' of Scrappies was folded in following the ''[[CrisisCrossover Inferno]]'' event with the X-Terminators: Boom Boom, Rusty, Skids, Arty, Leech, Rictor, Whiz Kid. Luckily the bulk of the characters were quickly put on various buses, leaving Rictor and Boom Boom to become beloved members of the group, unless you were a shipper who was NOT happy with Wolfsbane and Cannonball ending up romantically involved with Rictor and Boom Boom respectively.
** Cable, initially. He was originally depicted as a mentor with a corrupting influence on the team (urging them to become more violent and more ruthless), and he apparently viewed his allies as expendable, if not killing them himself. The new direction for the team was far from universally appreciated. It took several years of character development to turn Cable into a more likeable character, who has spend a lifetime trying to achieva unatainable goals.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The transition from New Mutants to X-Force. The team lost several of its key members (such as Magik, Moonstar, and Wolfsbane), it replaced them with morally questionable or (in Feral's case) sociopathic members, and they started being promoted as an ultra-violent and militaristic alternative to the X-Men. On the villain front, the relatively likeable and reasonably sane Hellions were replaced with the ultra-violent and unhinged members of the Mutant Liberation Front. Given these changes, several fans of the New Mutants hated X-Force with a passion.
* TheWoobie: Rahne. An orphan raised by a religious fanatic adoptive father. She was taught to hate herself and her mutation as satanic, her inherited prejudices caused friction with her teammates. Her subsequent stories involve several periods from separation from both her best friend and her main love interest, a period as a brainwashed slave, surviving the assassination of her adoptive mother, exeriencing a scandal that ended her teaching career because she fell in love with a student, having uncontrolable violent urges, surviving the murder of her only son, and being effectively told that Krakoa's resurrection spells may not work on him at all. Basically 40 years of one tragic story after another. Writers seem to delight on making her life worse.
** Karma was originally depicted as a war orphan from UsefulNotes/TheVietnamWar. She witnessed the rape and murder of her mother, she was also raped, and she was left to both fend for herself and to play surrogate mother for two younger siblings. She was forced to kill her evil brother and was traumatised by the act, and for years her archenemy was an EvilUncle who wanted to control her. She had her body hijacked and corrupted by the Shadow King for an extended period. She had several stories with her siblings kept hostage by various villains. She had a long period of estrangement from her best friends. When she came out as a lesbian, her love interests were oblivious to her feelings. When she re-joined the X-Men associates, she had a leg permanently severed and she was given an awkward-looking prosthetic. Basically, most of her stories depict her suffering one trauma after another. She rarely experiences any moments of calm or joy.
