* AccidentalAesop:
** Don't ignore someone's bad behavior that occurs in private just because they make your family member happy.
** Don't just frantically accuse someone without sufficient proof. Even if ''you'' saw evidence about them, ''no one else'' has, and failing to account for that can cause people to quickly discredit you.
** Sometimes, people whom you haven't seen in a while can change over time, and you just have to accept that.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation:
** Why DID Shining Armour wait so long to tell Twilight about his wedding, and why is he being so evasive about it? Is this a hint that he does not really care as much about her as she thinks?
** Some people think that Twilight was ''[[IncestSubtext jealous]]'' instead of ProperlyParanoid towards her brother.
** There is a lot of leeway regarding how much of Shining Armor's hostility to Twilight can be attributed to his brainwashing.
** Some people have interpreted Celestia's anger towards Twilight after her outburst as disappointment in her for not coming to her first to discuss her suspicions about Cadance.
** Was Chrysalis holding the VillainBall by not making an effort to act like the [[NiceGirl real Cadance]] around Twilight, or was she deliberately acting out of character in order isolate her from her friends and loved ones for when she tried to call her out on her behavior?
** Seeing as all it took was a harsh scolding from her brother to make Twilight feel bad about what she had done, did she really know what she was doing, and did she really believe what she said?
** Referring to the jealousy suggestion above, was Twilight legitimately accusing Cadence of being evil, or did she just want an excuse to dislike her for taking her brother away from her?
** Some people think one reason Twilight's friends didn't believe her suspicions that Cadence was evil, is because her complaints about "Cadance" not acting the way Twilight remembered was just Twilight [[NostalgiaFilter trying too hard to relive her nostalgic memories and refusing to accept that her old foal sitter had changed.]]
** ''Another'' possible way of looking at it is that, given the previous episode, Twilight's friends disliked her [[AesopAmnesia hypocrisy.]]
** Did Twilight's friends, mentor, and brother ''really'' abandon and shun her after her outburst until her vindication, or did they simply walk away (possibly for only a few minutes) to give everyone time to cool down, then fail to find her again? One of Equestria's most talented unicorns couldn't have been kidnapped, especially not in the middle of a secure castle on high alert, so she must have left on her own. Worrisome, but there's no reason to think she's in danger and they can all have a long talk after the wedding.
** The debate over Twilight's confrontation with the others likely would have caused the episodes to be OvershadowedByControversy if not for the action-packed payoff of Part 2. Many feel the others were in the wrong for dismissing her in spite of everything she had done by that point in the series to show she wouldn't make such an accusation baselessly, knowing Cadance well enough so that her suspicions should have been taken seriously, and their not giving Twilight a chance to explain herself more rationally. Others defend them, arguing Twilight has been known to FreakOut over the smallest problems before, [[NotHelpingYourCase her behavior throughout the episode did her no favors]], and she failed to give any evidence that couldn't be rationalized away (like Cadance forgetting their SecretHandShake), giving them enough to justify their dismissal. There are also those that think [[BothSidesHaveAPoint both sides were equally right/wrong]] and/or want the others to ''[[QuitYourWhining get over it]]'', since, in the long run, it's a minor plot point compared to the others that happened in the two-parter and the rest of the series.
* CommonKnowledge: Many criticize everyone for ignoring Twilight's warnings that Cadance was an imposter despite the known threat against Canterlot. However, Twilight only warned them Cadance was evil, and [[RightForTheWrongReasons never suspected that she was an imposter]] -- in fact, she outright states in "Part 2" that she was fooled too (while changelings are well known afterward this episode treats them as [[OutsideContextProblem unknown at the time]]), and her suppositions and warning are unconnected to the threat to Canterlot and never bring it up.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Not a character, but the design style of the chibi-like ArtShift that appears briefly during Twilight's DarkReprise of "Big Brother Best Friend Forever", dubbed the [[https://derpibooru.org/search?q=pointy+ponies "Pointy Ponies"]] style, has become very popular among fan-artists.
* EpilepticTrees: Why didn't Twilight know her brother was engaged to Cadance? Maybe Celestia announced it in the letter that Garble destroyed in [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E21DragonQuest "Dragon Quest"]].
* {{Fanon}}: The scene where Cadance shows her powers for the first time to a pair of arguing ponies is often subject to fanart where it is revealed that in reality they are either [[RelativeError blood-related family members like siblings]] or at least one of them is actually married to somepony else offscreen.
* FourthWallMyopia: The cause of the backlash over everyone refusing to believe and walking out on Twilight. Twilight made the same poor decisions as them[[labelnote:examples]]Their AesopAmnesia about taking your friends worries seriously, with Twilight also forgetting the far more recent (as in the episode immediately prior) lesson of not jumping to conclusions without proof that she herself preached; being [[EasilyCondemned quick to condemn]] Twilight, while she was just as quick to condemn Cadance, never considering that might [[NotHerself not be herself]]; everyone ignoring the threat to Canterlot, yet Twilight also did never consider that it might be connected.[[/labelnote]] and discredited herself with her behavior throughout the episode[[labelnote:examples]]Twilight acting rather grouchy and unpleasant both before and during the wedding plans while being unhealthily possessive of her brother, nitpicking every instance of poor behavior from the bride and reducing her to tears via hardcore slander, and repeatedly blowing off her friends' concerns.[[/labelnote]], hence Twilight immediately accepting their apologies and spending as much time admitting she was wrong as well. However, as the episode took place almost entirely from Twilight's perspective, it disproportionally showed why her actions seemed justifiable while the justification for everyone elses[[labelnote:examples]]Their mentioning [[{{Bridezilla}} Cadance's alibis]], and "Cadance" giving them positions as bridesmaids showing she feigned niceness as needed to gain trust.[[/labelnote]] received little emphasis. It also overlooks the obvious proof to audiences that Cadance was an imposter ([[OutOfCharacterAlert not remembering "ladybugs awake"]], their different magic color) was something nopony but Twilight knew and magic color was never confirmed as diegetic respectively with Twilight failing to mention them when making her case.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: "A Canterlot Wedding" introduces Twilight's never-before mentioned brother and the first alicorn who isn't Celestia or Luna, and was given a massive 'Royal Wedding' marketing and toyline push by Hasbro in a clear attempt to ride the mania created by the previous year's royal wedding of Kate and Prince William. "A Canterlot Wedding" is still a widely-liked pair of episodes, but it was the first blatant example of the show introducing a story in service of creating a marketable toyline, something that became more common in future seasons.
* GeniusBonus: With [[http://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/comments/sm22p/a_spoiler_in_the_song/ this]]. And WordOfGod says [[https://twitter.com/#!/dannyimusic/status/193926339043147777 yes, that was intentional.]]
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Cadance is ironic because of Hasbro's pink Celestia's toys.
** Awhile back, there was a "Smug Cadance" meme which had a picture of the bride-to-be with smug face making snarky comments about her being another alicorn, her being pink, and her marrying Twilight's brother among other things. First episode airs and Cadance is shown to be very smug and snarky. In truth, the imposter was and the real deal isn't.
** During a flashback, a young Twilight Sparkle moans about how she's [[IJustWantToBeSpecial just a "regular old unicorn"]] to Cadance. This is rather ironic considering what would happen to Twilight Sparkle at [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS3E13MagicalMysteryCure the end of the following season]].
** One of the phrases in Twilight and Cadence's SecretHandshake is "Ladybugs awake". [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS0E4StarlightTheHypnotist A mid-season short]] much later on reveals that Twilight is afraid of ladybugs.
* IncestYayShipping: Twilight is very, very, close to her brother.
* NeverLiveItDown: Fans will not let Twilight's friends, her brother Shining Armor, and Celestia calling out and ditching her after the accusation scene, even with a throwaway apology from Applejack next episode. This is despite "Cadance" [[{{Bridezilla}} having an alibi for her behavior]], and Twilight being a jerk about it even before she had a reason to be suspicious, had no proof for her claims, and admitted [[RightForTheWrongReasons she was wrongly paranoid]]. Many exaggerate it as them cutting off ties with Twilight when they were simply leaving her to reflect on her actions, which would've been harmless if not for the unforeseeable Changeling invasion. This also ignores that Shining Armor was implied to have been brainwashed by "Cadance", Twilight's friends [[FourthWallMyopia never knew nor witnessed the audience and Twilight saw]], and "Cadance" made offscreen efforts [[PragmaticVillainy to win Twilight’s friends' trust]].
* SlowPacedBeginning: This episode focuses on building up characters that [[RememberTheNewGuy it's hard to believe we didn't hear of sooner]] and has established ones making less than intelligent calls to [[YouCantThwartStageOne set the stage for Part 2]], which had enough action and payoff to make it well received in spite of the controversial setup.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: Queen Chrysalis (while disguised) dismisses Pinkie's party plan as infantile and fitter for a child's birthday party than a royal wedding. One can't help but agree.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: For those who are into the really obscure, [[http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x172zua_mlp-fim-bgm-cadence_music Cadence's leitmotif]] does bear a slight resemblance to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH4U1ID_XiE the instrumental theme from Jim Henson's "Mother Goose Stories."]]
* TaintedByThePreview: Even before The Hub's premiere, a few fans called ExecutiveMeddling on this two-parter, since it concerns a frilly, girlish wedding of two characters only introduced this episode that [[RememberTheNewGuy no one has ever heard of before]] for the sake of Hasbro's marketing.
