With the teens not being mean to Spike but toughening him up. In real life, most reptiles have little involvement in child-rearing. On the other hoof, Spike may have just chosen the bad crowd when it came to dragons and the teens are just sadistic bullies.

5	** Did the dragons accept Spike into their gang because they respect him or did they want to use him as bait for the phoenixes and not give a flying feather on what happened to him?

Good, but then the plot goes into him being picked on teenaged dragons, earning their respect and then finding out they're just mean bastards. It could have been better spent building a mythology of the place of dragons in Equestria and add in that the bullying subplot could have just been easily done with stallions in Ponyville.
27	* UglyCute: Crackle, the only dragon named in the show, looks so terrible that it is adorable.
28	* ViewerGenderConfusion: What gender is Crackle supposed to be anyway?
29	* TheWoobie: Poor Spike has an identity crisis caused by his own friends, walks his way to the Dragon's volcano and falls in with a bad crowd.
