!!From the movie
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Vada getting accidentally locked in the basement. It comes a little out of nowhere, is played for a moment of drama but Vada is ultimately fine in the next scene and it doesn't get mentioned again. When Shelly speaks to Harry about her concerns, she references an earlier moment but not this scene - rendering it kind of pointless in the overall narrative.
* CrossesTheLineTwice:
** Vada's grandmother is senile but sometimes occasionally gets up and starts singing spontaneously. One day Vada is supposed to be watching her and she gets up from the living room...and walks right into someone's funeral to start singing. You feel bad for the poor unsuspecting mourners but at the same time, it's a ''hilarious'' situation.
** Vada and her grandmother play a darkly hilarious prank on some kids in the opening scene, which plays on the elder's senility.
* HarsherInHindsight: On three different occasions: when Vada asks Harry if a small casket being brought to the funeral home was for a kid; Vada first encounters the beehive, during which [[spoiler:Thomas J is told to run for his life and when Shelly finds out that Thomas J is allergic to everything.]]
* ItWasHisSled: [[spoiler:Thomas J dies.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Vada's habit of [[MadnessMantra singing "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" fast when she's upset]] tends to ruin what are supposed to be emotional moments.
** If one listens very closely, [[spoiler:when they show Thomas J's corpse while Vada is breaking down, you can hear Macaulay Culkin ''snoring''.]]
** [[spoiler:Vada's breakdown at the funeral includes her stammering "He needs his glasses! He can't see without his glasses!" Which is absolutely heartbreaking... if that line doesn't make you immediately think of [[Franchise/ScoobyDoo Velma Dinkley's famous catchphrase]].]]
* NeverLiveItDown: The movie will forever be known as the movie where [[spoiler:Macaulay Culkin dies of bee stings.]] There's no shortage of memes out there referring to said infamous death, often crossing over with ''WesternAnimation/BeeMovie'' or ''Film/TheWickerMan2006''.
* NightmareFuel: Right, but let's be real, in its way [[spoiler:the Thomas J death scene is terrifying. The casual spoilers and memes are that he dies of a "bee sting", but he's actually ''swarmed'' by at least a ''hundred'' of the little fuckers after he agitates a fallen bee nest. His final moments - the final moments of a grade-school kid, let's be clear - were of being stung over and over by creatures he knew to be worried about and it was literally one of his worst fears coming true. ''All right after he'd found Vada's ring to cheer her up.'' Now, the actual portrayal just involves Macaulay Culkin flailing around a little bit while overlaid bees fly around some, followed by a shot of [[GoryDiscretionShot Thomas J's glasses falling to the ground]], but thinking about what actually happened, even a little bit, and what the film ''didn't'' show is the stuff of nightmares.]]
* OvershadowedByControversy: At the time of its release, the notion of [[spoiler:"the ''Film/HomeAlone'' kid"]] getting killed off garnered huge backlash. Gossip columnist Marilyn Beck was so offended that she deliberately spoiled the ending, and parents got into an uproar. Columbia Pictures attempted damage control by bringing in educators and child psychologists to reassure parents that the target audience would not be traumatized at seeing [[spoiler:a Macaulay Culkin character]] die.
* SpecialEffectFailure: Part of the reason the [[spoiler:Thomas J death scene]] gets meme'd on here in later years is that the parts of the scene that actually feature [[spoiler:Thomas J on screen]] aren't too terribly convincing; [[spoiler:it's fairly clear the bees don't actually inhabit the same physical space as Maculay Culkin and that it's largely being achieved with a footage overlay, and that Culkin is just kind of randomly flailing around. It even sounds suspiciously like his dialogue is dubbed over. The way we see his glasses drop to the ground, which is cut to without any indication in the previous cut that his glasses have been knocked off or that he's falling toward the ground in any way, also breaks the KuleshovEffect ''pretty'' hard and feels fairly goofy, despite the dramatic implications.]] The filmmakers appear to try and conceal this (and ratchet the shock value) by making the sequence comparatively brief (the actual [[spoiler:bee attack]] itself takes ~10 seconds of airtime), but things are still noticeable even in the short timeframe.
* SpiritualSuccessor: This was probably the closest we got to a ''Literature/BridgeToTerabithia'' movie until the actual movie of the latter was made, although in this case the girl is the protagonist [[spoiler: and the boy is the one who dies]].
* {{Squick}}: During the barbecue scene, Vada opens her mouth to show the chewed-up remains of her food to make a {{pun}} on "see food" (seafood).
%%* ToyShip: Vada and Thomas J.
* ValuesDissonance:
** While explaining that her dad and Shelly got engaged, Vada mentions that he got her a ring. Thomas J assumes it's a decoder ring, which Vada responds to by calling Thomas J a retard. Both at the time of the film's release (1991) and during the period it's set in (1972), "retard" was a commonplace insult derived from "mental retardation," which was still accepted medial terminology. However, decades later, "retard" is widely considered an ableist slur, and "mental retardation" has been accordingly phased out in favor of "intellectual disability."
** During the 4th of July cookout, Shelly's ex-husband Danny stops by the house and insults Vada for her unconventional name, which Vada utters a comeback for[[note]]Vada is a Germanic name meaning "famous ruler"[[/note]]. The [=1970s=] were the start of really wide name variety thanks to all those Sixties Babies™; even in '91, never mind the new century, nobody would really care, but it would've been of note circa 1970.
* TheWoobie:
** Vada. Really considering all the constant anxiety she has at such a young age no less, it really makes you want to cry for her and give her a hug in the end.
** Poor Thomas J. counts as well. Literally allergic to just about everything, doesn't have many friends his age except for Vada and she's a massive {{Tsundere}} toward him, and he [[spoiler:dies in a freak accident not long after his and Vada's FirstKiss.]]
