* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Azai. [[spoiler:A man simply trying to protect his clan by giving them resources to replace the now extinct ink-flower even at the cost of his honor, or a ruthless leader who never cared about the honor in first place and will do ''anything'' to "protect" the clan?]]
** Ora. [[spoiler:Is she the last remnant of the Marked Ninja's sanity, or the last straw, the voice which finally drives him into madness?]]
** Hessian and Karajan. [[spoiler:Callous MegaCorp headed by a CorruptCorporateExecutive, or normal people reacting to the unprovoked and unexpected murders of their colleagues/employees during a robbery-gone-bad?]]
* DemonicSpiders:
** Snipers. They come every now and then, but are generally positioned in obnoxious places, [[OneHitKill kill the Marked Ninja in a single shot]] and to make matters worse they can spot him even in complete darkness unless the Marked Ninja is hiding.
** Elite Guards. They cannot be dispatched via normal means (trying to kill them before anything will result in a rather embarrassing NeckLift NoSell), you must either use the environment or a ninja tool to at least stun them before moving for the kill; AND if you fail the quick-time event they will ''snap out of it'' just in time to counterattack. The biggest problem is that there's no way to kill them in certain places unless you use up one of your very scarce attack items, otherwise you have to avoid them entirely.
*** Unless, of course, you want to go toe-to-toe with them. Hit them enough times and they ''will'' be stunned... but that tends to be a ''very'' bad idea unless they are completely and totally alone. Oh, and you lose points for raising the alarm. It is possible to beat them into dizziness without that ever happening, but it requires hitting them relentlessly until they're stunned; stopping for a second and letting them get a look at you will instantly activate the alarm.
** [[spoiler:[[EliteMooks The Hisomu Stalkers]]]]. Not only can they not be stealth killed as they have keen senses (they can identify the Marked Ninja within a certain radius), are extremely agile, persistent, cunning and their attacks can kill the Marked Ninja almost instantly [[note]]Unless it's [=New Game+=] the attack isn't outright instant kill, but bites a very large chunk of health and hits so fast it doesn't really matter[[/note]]. They also need to be stunned akin the Elites but are far more agile and acrobatic meaning that physical combat will most likely result in a NoSell. [[spoiler:The final trial of the game has you temporarily locked in a large room with '''three''' of these]].
* GoddamnedBats:
** The Dogs. They can smell the ninja in the darkness (even hiding) and will start barking alerting the entire and room giving your position even if you try to move to another spot.
** Shield Guards will light up an area with a flare if they get suspicious which can range from annoying to problematic depending on what's nearby.
* GoodBadBugs: There's a way to glitch through the floor if you kick into a wall while jumping. Your character is also able to "fly" by using the parachute cloth, then entering and exiting Focus mode.
** Restarting Checkpoints during certain segments will result in guards lowering their more alert status, when they keep their guns with flashlights pointed at all times, into "calm", when they simply walk patrolling the area.
** Sometimes dying a certain way will reward points (which are then reset due to the fact you died) such as dying to lasers can sometimes result in getting an "indirect kill" bonus
* HilariousInHindsight: Billie Lurks in ''The Knife of Dunwall'' DLC for ''{{VideoGame/Dishonored}}'' serves an eerily similar role as Ora in that she follows the PlayerCharacter around each mission [[MrExposition providing exposition]]. This would qualify for the myriad of other [[ShoutOut Shout Outs]] to stealth games that ''Mark of the Ninja'' employs...if not for the fact that the DLC came out about six months later.
* PlayerPunch:
** [[spoiler:Dosan's death. Especially after everything he had to endure and the fact you worked so hard to free him, the next level punches even harder by forcing the player to carry his body and Ora regretting having to leave him without a proper, honorable, burial]].
** [[spoiler: The reveal that Ora was never real. Even if she is just a hallucination, Ora has been the player's guiding voice throughout the whole game.]]
*** And if you do [[spoiler:kill her, she dissipates into a flock of crows, and the scene changes to the Marked Ninja ''impaled on his own sword'', having committed seppuku.]]
** When you begin to make your decision, but before the [[spoiler:execution, your target will be shocked, then lower his or her head in a combination of sorrow, disappointment, shame and acceptance of his or her final fate. Hesitate and it's possible to change your mind, but the individual remains in the same position. It prevents any real clear 'right' decision, as both characters will accept and respect your final judgment.]]
