1	* CompleteMonster: [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain General George Armstrong Custer]] is a genocidal, hateful [[CavalryOfficer officer]] in the American army. First encountering protagonist Jack Crabb when the latter is an army muleskinner, Custer leads a brutal attack on Native villages, massacring [[WouldHitAGirl women]] and [[WouldHurtAChild children]]. Later leading a second attack that butchers a whole village, including Crabb's wife and daughter, Custer [[CruelMercy spares Crabb]] only to savor his anguish at being unable to kill Custer. Later forcing Crabb into being a scout, Custer decides to attack what he assumes is a helpless group of women and children.
2	* {{Narm}}: The use of "Human Being" in place of "the People" when they're not really in the same context can annoy some people. There's also Jack's capture by the US Army when he's sixteen, before he goes off to live with the preacher and his wife. How does he try to make it clear that he's a white man? Yell "God bless George Washington!" and "God bless my mother!" as if it would ''help.'' The accent that he seems to do it with doesn't help matters.
