* BadassDecay:
** Happens to Barquiel in ''Scion'' and ''Justice,'' but he recovers in ''Mercy.''
** Phèdre experiences a notable decay throughout the Imriel books. It starts when things are broken between her and Imriel when they have a dark moment when he sees her for the first time as an ''anguissette'' and him a scion of Kushiel. It continues as she is unable to aid him in his time of need when he is ensorcelled in Alba and absent when he comes home after [[spoiler: Dorelei’s death]]. Her decline in the series culminates in ''Mercy'' when she is helplessly [[spoiler: bewitched by Carthage’s spell]]. It’s not her fault, and everyone else who wasn't Imriel was cursed as well, but after three and a half books of her being a total badass, it hurts to see her so helpless.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: The book series mashes up HistoricalFantasy and HighFantasy with espionage and adventure fiction, but it's probably best known for having a professional submissive as the protagonist of the first trilogy and there legitimately is a ''lot'' of sex in all the books.
* CompleteMonster: Imriel('s) Trilogy:: [[InsaneAdmiral General Astegal]] is a corrupt [[Characters/KushielsLegacyCarthaginians Carthaginian general]] seeking to dominate Aragonia and Terra d'Ange. Arranging a brutal war with the former, Astegal uses [[BlackMagic magic]] to turn Terra d'Ange to his side to conquer Aragonia. Replacing memories of [[Characters/KushielsLegacyHouseCourcel Prince Imriel]] to the people of Terra d'Ange, Astegal also marries Imriel's fiancée Sidonie and [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil redirects her desire for Imriel to him]] while trying to kill Imriel.
* [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming]]: Several, but the biggest one has to be when [[spoiler:Phèdre speaks the Name of God, and it is revealed that everyone heard the word "love" in their own language. Also doubles as a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome.]]
%%* EnsembleDarkhorse: Hyacinthe.
* FridgeLogic: Being a WildChild, Moirin says "aye" instead of "yes"; she even gets corrected about it. But most of the time, she is not speaking her native Alban but D'Angeline, that she learnt in books, or Ch'in, that she learnt from an OldMaster, or…
* MagnificentBastard: [[FemmeFatale The beautiful, deadly]] Melisande Shahrizai has her former lover and rival Anafiel Delaunay killed after manipulating her current lover to his demise. Obsessed with playing 'the game' of politics and attempting to seize power, Melisande allies with the barbarian Skaldi to overthrow the government of Terra D'Ange, nearly succeeding in bringing it down. Upon their defeat, Melisande later allies with the queen's great uncle and marries him, crafting a new conspiracy to eliminate Queen Ysandre and place her own child on the throne without ever drawing suspicion to herself, almost succeeding. Melisande is so excellent at staying out of trouble for her crimes that the only way the gods themselves can punish her is through [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes her one beloved son Imriel]].
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Melisande's ally [[spoiler:has Delaunay, Alcuin, and their entire household killed while Joscelin and Phèdre are away on a mission. When the two run to the royal palace for help, she intercepts, drugs, and sells them into slavery. Actually, she didn't know they would be killed, and seems to feel bad about it, but doing that afterward is still unforgivable. Not to mention conspiring to conquer her own country later.]] You can still hear the audience howling for her blood...
** [[spoiler:Waldemar Selig]]'s comes when he tries to skin [[spoiler:Phèdre]] alive at Troyes-le-Mont.
* TheScrappy: Moirin may be this for the fanbase in general, whilst Imriel in the first two books of his trilogy was seen as this for his tendency to {{Wangst}} about his situation.
* SeasonalRot: Some fans say this about Chosen for the first trilogy, Mercy and or Justice for the second and both Curse and Blessing for the third. On a series wide scale, quite a few fans seem to think that the other books do not live up to the standard set by Phedre's books.
* {{Squick}}: ''Avatar''. The 'iron rod' that the Mahrkagir uses on Phèdre. And ''all'' of the things he does to Imriel. And pretty much everything else about him.
* StrangledByTheRedString: Played straight and played with in-universe with Bao and Moirin. Of the three main couples, they had the weakest development during the first book, lacking a strong moment where feelings blossomed like the previous two. However, this changes to something of a subversion when [[spoiler: Moirin shares her connection with her deity with Bao to save his life. Their spirits become tied together permanently, forcing feelings whether they would have gone there naturally or no.]] Bao promptly tries to rebel against this [[spoiler: forced love, and runs away, forcing Moirin to track him down.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: How some fans felt regarding the existence of the Guild. Some felt that they could have contributed more to the plot.
%%* TheWoobie: Imriel.
