* AdaptationDisplacement: The movie is more popular nowadays than the novel.
* OneSceneWonder: Technically Creator/JoBethWilliams is in more than one scene, but let's hear it for her feature film debut: her horribly embarrassed conversation in the hallway, while she's wearing nothing but glasses and a necklace, with half-asleep Billy asking her if she likes fried chicken.
* OvershadowedByControversy: Creator/DustinHoffman’s extremely nasty MethodActing has come in for a lot of criticism, especially after the accusations against him from the Me Too movement. The one that’s especially beyond the pale is his repeatedly insulting Creator/MerylStreep’s recently deceased fiancé Creator/JohnCazale.
* ValuesResonance:
** The court system being prejudiced against men when it comes to child custody battles. This was a lesson that desperately needed to be taught back then, and we still need reminding of today. The fact Joanna came so close to getting full custody of her son even after abandoning him, and only averts this by giving up her fight drives it home.
** The fact that the film primarily focuses on the struggles of being a single father, which is generally taken for granted even to this day.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Despite being rated PG, the film is emotionally intense and contains swearing as well as fairly explicit female nudity. This is largely a facet of the PG rating being much broader at the time of the movie's release than it is now; had it come out in the present day it would almost certainly have been PG-13 (a rating that didn't exist in the late '70s) or even R.
