* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Did Amy simultaneously date Elliott and Finch to see who was a better long-term boyfriend (so she says) or did she just like having two men fighting over her? She mentioned going after the newly-promoted Kevin after dumping both of them, [[GoldDigger so she's clearly not after looks or personality in a man.]]
* BrokenAesop: Jack tries to tell Elliott an anti-racism parable using different-colored ''slushies'', comparing them with people of varying colors. However, it comically collapses as both agree "blue is the best" (tasting).
%%* EnsembleDarkhorse: Nina and Finch.
* FairForItsDay: Though the portrayal of LGBT+ characters wasn't entirely accurate (e.g. some had NoBisexuals, TransEqualsGay) it was still pretty progressive in the late 90s/early 2000s by portraying them quite positively and entirely accepted.
* HilariousInHindsight: A throwaway joke in one episode has Nina saying she agreed to have "coitus" with a man she's dating, while also admitting she doesn't know what coitus is, and thinks it's some type of food. At the time "coitus" was a very obscure, almost outdated term for sex. Years later, ''Series/TheBigBangTheory'' would bring the word back into the public consciousness with it's regular usage, so now Nina just looks that much more dense.
* JerkassWoobie:
** Nina when [[spoiler: Binny dies]].
** Finch gets this every now and then, having a distant father and all that.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: In the first season, Nina's primary character trait was her bitchiness, with most of her jokes revolving around her being bitter and past her prime. In the second season, the writers began emphasizing her ditzy side a lot more, and her comedic focus shifted to her promiscuity and substance abuse issues, making the character a lot more lighthearted and fun.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** Minor recurring character Persky was played by Creator/TomKenny, who is better known as ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' among others.
** In Season 3's "Funny Girl", Creator/SteveCarell turns up playing an insurance agent.
** Some of the models on the Blush covers would later become big stars, including Creator/MenaSuvari ("Finch in the Dogg House"), Creator/SofiaVergara ("How the Finch Stole Christmas") and Creator/PadmaLakshmi ("Christmas? Christmas!").
* {{Squick}}:
** Wally got to spend some private time with Nina in one episode. It's implied that in addition to sex, he also masturbated while watching her.
** A 13-year-old boy tries to seduce Nina, even after she lets slip that she's about to turn 50.
* TearJerker:
** When Jack's wife [[spoiler: left him for another man]]. Maya, who never liked their marriage to begin with, can't help but feel bad for him and for her sister.
** Coming in immediately after that, Jack laments how [[spoiler: he really wanted to be the kind of father for Hannah that he couldn't be for Maya, but now he'll only get to see her when her mother says so.]]
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The use of UsefulNotes/DonaldTrump as Jack's SitcomArchnemesis is treated with a lightness you'd never see now.
