* AmericansHateTingle: The 1980s cartoon series by Hanna-Barbera. When their show first came on in Season 2 of the 1981 Smurfs cartoon series in America, they were being sidelined by their little blue friends due to them being seen as another Saturday morning cartoon. Fortunately, the cartoon would eventually be VindicatedByHistory years later.
* BrokenBase: Fans would either like the 1980s cartoon series for its silly humor and fantasy-adventure plots, while others would dislike it for its lack of the comics' political satire and references to alcohol, as well as the toned-down violence to appease MoralGuardians.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Peewit became a bit divisive in the 1980s cartoon series. Some people like him for his goofy personality and big heart, others dislike him for his tone-deaf singing voice.
* CultClassic: Despite their comics and cartoon show not living up to the same popularity as The Smurfs, they do have a sizeable fanbase. The series is best known for its action-adventure stories, the friendship dynamic between Johan and Peewit, political satire (at least in the early comic stories) and fantasy elements.
* GrowingTheBeard: From ''The Punishment of Basenhau'' to ''The Sorcery of Maltrochu'', the storytelling and art style improved remarkably by the end of the original comic book series.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** On Christmas Eve, Peewit is too impatient to wait until midnight for the grand feast. He makes several schemes to steal some food from the kitchen and eventually runs away with a turkey. Once outside the castle, he is about to eat it when he sees a poor peasant who has nothing to bring back to his family. Moved, Peewit decides to give him the turkey. The peasant gratefully thanks him and wishes him a Merry Christmas.
** The song [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRC0rqo4xA8 "Un ami pour la vie"]] from the 1984 album ''Les chansons de Johan et Pirlouit'' has [[FriendshipSong Johan and Peewit singing a duet about their friendship]].
* HoYay: When Johan is leaving the barony of Roucybeuf to return to the King, Sir Hugues bid him farewell. There's visible sadness in Hugues' face and the way they held each other makes it somewhat suspicious. His father reassures him that's he'll see him again.
* NightmareFuel: In ''War of the Seven Springs'', Johan and Peewit take shelter in an abandoned castle. No one is around and there's nothing but dust and cobwebs. The pair sleep in one of the chamber only to hear the abbey's bell ringing at midnight. Johan and Peewit are both scared and slowly walk in the dark to investigate, with only a torch for lighting. They find the abbey empty and when they try to pull the rope of the bell, it breaks off, having rotten away over the years. A chilling wind extinguish the torch and an owls scare them. Johan and Peewit return to their chamber only to find a ghost waiting for them, scaring them to death. That seem like standard DungeonCrawling stuff, but try to read this story all alone at night with little lighting.
* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: The early albums of the series were easily the best, while the later comics were considered inferior to the ones under Peyo's involvement (mainly due to less emphasis on human politics and more emphasis on the Smurfs' presence).
* VanillaProtagonist: In later comics and seasons of the cartoon series, Johan slowly fazed into a supporting role or sometimes didn't even appear at all, since the whimsical storylines tended to favour more comical or fallible characters like Peewit or [[BreakoutCharacter the Smurfs]], while Johan was [[OnlySaneMan relatively adjusted and normal]].
