* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The manga, because H O L Y S H I T!
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The anime's OP sung by Connie has a melancholic and passionate tone, and the same goes for its foreign versions.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The series was very popular in the Middle East (and allegedly, Italy), as opposed to its lack of success in Japan, where it was planned for a full year's run of 52 episodes but cut off at 20. It didn't even air across Japan, not broadcast in some areas until 1991!
** It aired on Creator/SpaceToon during The90s and was one of the first shojo to ever be shown there (alongside Manga/Lady). It is so popular that many Arab fan-sub groups work to keep it's legacy alive.
** In France, the anime is fondly remembered because it was part of many childhoods during The80s.
* HilariousInHindsight: The anime portraying Henri Guisan as a CoolOldGuy who's great friends with many of the main characters, and an ArchEnemy of it's HateSink Count Garmont. In RealLife, Henri Guisan heavily propagandized his image (banning 5,600 images of himself from being printed from 1939 to 1945) to hide some of his more unsavoury aspects, like praising Benito Mussolini. He would have approved of this anime.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** [[spoiler: The Count's murder of Hans. Sure, he was a bastard who sold Jeudi and Lundi out to the Nazis, but he regretted it and was trying to save them by handing them the necessary papers for their immigration. Hans' lifeless stare as the bullet pierces his back is absolutely haunting, and cements his status as a ruthless NaziNobleman.]]
** [[spoiler: Later, the Count plans to murder General Guisan so he can plunge Switzerland into the upcoming UsefulNotes/WorldWarII and benefit from it. Even Alfred, who was a vile person for most of the show's run, told him to fuck off.]]
** [[spoiler: Toulonchamp crossed it when he manipulated Hélène using Mathilda to pose as his long-lost daughter, knowing that Hélène would have a heart attack due to her unstable condition if anyone revealed the truth to her. After he's found out, he crosses it again by slapping Hélène and trying to have Jeudi expelled from her rightful home.]]
* UnconventionalLearningExperience: Of Swiss culture and history - Henri Guisan was indeed a real person who opposed the Nazis, and the anime correctly shows that they speak German and French there.
* VindicatedByHistory: It was hated in Japan and cancelled very quickly, but found success in foreign markets and survived obscurity because many European and Arab fans fondly remembered it. In TheNew10s, it's been picked up by shojo lovers and enjoyed a newfound, better reputation. The anime adaptation also popularized the manga, which is more well-liked since it's much darker and melodramatic.
* TheWoobie:
** Jeudi was torn from her family by a plane crash and all her attempts to live an ordinary life are intruded on by the Count, who mobilizes his men and even her own friends to capture her and bring him to her as a bride. When she tracks down her birth family, it turns out that they're a bunch of assholes who are cold to her deceased father, [[spoiler: and they're also victim themselves of a manipulative asshole. Jeudi has to watch an imposter comfort her mother as she uses her name, and would have let it happen if it wasn't for Friedrich's song. So it's all the more sweeter when Jeudi finally earns her happy ending - poor girl deserves it]].
** Lundi tries to save Jeudi after she's kidnapped, only to be shot at by the Count, and would have been on death's edge had Jeudi not saved him. Then, he's separated from Jeudi again because of the train bombings. Every time Lundi tries to protect Jeudi from harm, he suffers badly. But soldiers on because he loves her.
** Leonhardt suffered a major BreakTheCutie when his parents suddenly disappeared, even though it was OpenSecret that the Nazis took them away for being part of the resistance. When he drops the record book after reading his parent's obituaries, it's a MoodWhiplash after the character's small victory against the Nazis.
** The main reason why Jean-Jacques is such a messed up individual. [[spoiler: He arguably had the worst childhood out of anyone in the series, from Louise's implied sexual abuse from when he was a child, and being so desperate to escape her that he wrote to his biological parents, begging them to save him...only for them to already be deceased. The anime emphasizes that ChildrenAreInnocent, and Jean-Jacques is the biggest example. He was denied the basic love and protection most children needed at their age.]]
