* AlternativeJokeInterpretation: When Big Russ [[spoiler:volunteers himself to have the shrink machine tested on so as to guarantee that it actually works before being used on the kids again, once returned to normal size,]] his hat doesn't fit his head anymore. This could either be because [[spoiler:his head itself didn't completely return to its original size—the usual way the joke is interpreted—or another humorous way is because it took Big Russ being shrunk and then restored to full size to realize that his hat ''never actually'' fit his head]]—and that he may also have never noticed that because the cigarette pack always acted as padding that made the hat seems smaller than it actually was too.
* AngstWhatAngst: It is truly a marvel how calmly the characters react to everything that would be seen as terrifying in real life. The kids weren't really scared when they got shrunk and almost died a few times, and the adults take the news of their kids being shrunk rather better than most adults would. This is especially noticeable when Wayne almost accidentally eats Nick in his bowl of Cheerios, as Nick doesn't look even the slightest bit traumatized that he almost got eaten by his dad, and Wayne doesn't look the slightest bit traumatized that he almost ate his son.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: [[Music/JamesHorner James Horner's]] jazzy score.
* FridgeLogic: Nick tries to tell Wayne that the baseball was responsible for the shrink ray working, but his voice being tiny, the adults can't make out what the kids are saying, forcing them to act it out. Wayne could have just...put his ear closer to Nick. Instead, he and the other adults stay within normal speaking distance.
* GeniusBonus: Wayne says the shrink ray will put him up there with the first man in space, which he amends to "the first dog in space" when Quark barks, in reference to the Soviet dog Laika, the first being to orbit the Earth.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Wayne laughs off the idea that the shrink ray "blew up" the kids. Come the sequel...
** Russ Sr.'s annoyance with Wayne got a lot funnier with Creator/MattFrewer playing a MadScientist in ''Series/OrphanBlack''.
* InformedWrongness: As the title of the movie indicates, the film constantly pins most of the blame of the kids being shrunk on Wayne, as if he was careless about the kids' safety. However, from what the movie shows, it was actually Ron Thompson's fault they got shrunk because he was the one who hit his baseball into the Szalinskis' attic window and caused the shrinking machine to automatically shrink any object in its view, along with the kids. Even though he built the shrinking machine, Wayne had very little to do with the kids being shrunk, and the kids do mention that Wayne has forbidden them from going in the attic when he's at work. Meaning that he was cautious of the kids' safety and didn't want them going near his invention, and the kids wouldn't have been shrunk if Ron hadn't broken the Szalinskis' attic window with his baseball in the first place.
* JustHereForGodzilla: When the original film was released, it was paired up with the [[WesternAnimation/RogerRabbitShorts Roger Rabbit cartoon]] ''Tummy Trouble'', with some people being more interested in the new Roger Rabbit short than the actual film. Creator/GeneSiskel and Creator/RogerEbert actually pointed this out when they reviewed the film on ''Series/SiskelAndEbert''.
* ParanoiaFuel: If you're a breakfast-eater, or simply a cereal-eater, after this movie, you'll never eat either one the same way again.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** Mae Thompson, one of the parents, is played by Creator/KristineSutherland, who is better known as [[Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Joyce Summers]].
** Nick on the TV series is played by [[Series/TerminatorTheSarahConnorChronicles John Connor]] and Ar'nox the alien is [[WesternAnimation/HarveyBirdmanAttorneyAtLaw Mentok the Mind Taker]].
** Also on the TV series, Tiara [=VanHorn=] is played Creator/JewelStaite, who is better known as [[Series/{{Firefly}} Kaylee Frye]].
** The episode "Honey, We're Young at Heart" has a Little Mrs. [=McGann=] played by Creator/BrittMcKillip in one of her first acting roles before she was [[WesternAnimation/BabyLooneyTunes Baby Lola Bunny,]] [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Princess Cadance]] and [[WesternAnimation/{{Ninjago}} Harumi]].
* {{Sequelitis}}: Neither of the two sequels were anywhere near as popular as the first, although some fans consider ''Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves'' to be a SurprisinglyImprovedSequel compared to ''Honey, I Blew Up the Kid''.
* SignatureScene: Nick falling into Wayne's bowl of Cheerios and nearly getting eaten, to the point where every single trailer and commercial shows this scene, even the trailer for ''Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves''.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong:
** The instrumental theme of the first movie includes an obvious pastiche of Raymond Scott's [[StandardSnippet "Powerhouse B"]], to the point that Scott's estate sued (and latter settled with Disney) because of the similarity.
** Also from the first movie, Nino Rota's score for ''Film/{{Amarcord}}'' was borrowed from, leading to Rota's estate also suing (and also settling with Disney). The end credits have now been amended to credit both composers.
* TearJerker: [[spoiler: Anty's HeroicSacrifice.]] Ron's reaction makes it even worse. Then the camera slowly moves away and we can see the other kids are just as devastated.
** Not to mention Amy's near-drowning before Russ is able to resuscitate her with CPR. After she wakes up, Nick can't hold it in anymore, and he hugs her as tears start pouring from his eyes. Seeing how scared he was at how close his sister was to dying is enough to get anyone misty-eyed.
* UglyCute: Anty behaves like a loyal puppy dog ([[AllAnimalsAreDogs of course]]) and makes a friendly-sounding trilling noise, but it looks exactly like a proportionately gigantic ant is supposed to.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The forest-like lawn and even Anty still hold up amazingly well years later.
* TheWoobie: The kids are obviously woobies, but Nick is easily the most because he gets the short end of the stick the most out of the kids. He's one of the first kids to get shrunk, he falls into a flower and almost gets taken away by a bee, his sister almost dies from drowning, he and Ron get attacked by a scorpion, he's the first kid to get sucked out of the burrow by the lawnmower, and he falls into a bowl of Cheerios and almost gets eaten by his father. The fact that he's [[FridgeHorror a kid who went through these trauma-inducing experiences doesn't make it any better]].
