* AbandonShipping:
** Scott and Lauren, after TheReveal that [[spoiler:he's the Origami Killer and the one who murdered her son.]]
** The StrangledByTheRedString nature of Ethan and Madison's relationship, combined with the latter's AlternativeCharacterInterpretation (see below) has turned many fans away from the ship.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Sort of. The player characters can have varying personalities depending on your choices, but Ethan Mars takes the cake. Is he a Woobie who's plagued with guilt over the death of his son and willing to do anything to save Shaun, or is he a pathetic loser who's too wrapped up in his own troubles to be any good for his child, resulting in Shaun's death?
** It is possible that all the characters are ''really'' [[DeathSeeker looking to die]] given so many of their poor decisions.
** Jason, in a couple of ways. He acts like a child much younger than ten, but the reasons for that are never mentioned; does he have a developmental disorder? Ordinary immaturity? Or just a plain, poorly-written kid? This is largely due to him originally being younger during development, before writers had to make him older to tone down the dark and cruel content surrounding the death of a child.
** For most of the game, Madison seems like a fairly empathetic human being. But her behavior in some of the endings make her look much less sympathetic than the heroic IntrepidReporter she's apparently intended to be. Prime examples include writing a best-selling book about the Origami Killer case in a blatant betrayal of Ethan's trust if he rejected her (which he can do after discovering she was planning to do just that) or, in one of the bad endings, [[spoiler:suggesting to a clearly depressed Ethan that she bear him another son, right in front of Shaun's freshly filled in grave. For the book, had Ethan, had he been alive, given her permission or did she do it despite knowing he didn't care? For the Shaun ending, was she only suggesting due to wanting him to be with her, genuinely wanting Ethan to recover or both?]]
** Was Madison motivated to investigate the Origami Killer to save a child from drowning or to gain acclaim as a journalist? Or a mixture of both? Did her priorities change as she fell in love with Ethan? Does Ethan's rejection spur her into writing the book as a MistreatmentInducedBetrayal?
** How one views Scott Shelby [[spoiler:as the Origami Killer]] depends on what end scenario you get. In one, [[spoiler:Scott prepares to shoot Ethan even after he had succeeded in the trials, suggesting that he just uses his trauma as an excuse to satisfy his urges.]] But in another, [[spoiler:Shelby lets Ethan shoot him after rescuing his son, suggesting he is either a DeathSeeker or that he at least wanted to die at the hands of a father willing to do whatever it took to save his son.]]
*** If [[spoiler:Madison or Jayden rescue Shaun and are subsequently killed by Shelby, Shaun still manages to get away. Does Shelby not kill Shaun due to being disoriented or weakened from his fight, or was he willing to let Shaun live if rescued?]]
*** If he chooses to, does [[spoiler:Shelby leave Lauren to drown to finally get rid of a potential witness in an easy and relatively guilt-free manner? Is it because she betrayed him to Kramer? Or does he simply believe there is no time to save her without drowning as well? He does appear genuinely aggrieved when attacking Kramer later on.]]
*** Why doesn't [[spoiler:Shelby defend himself, run away or at least respond when Lauren confronts him at the end? Is he so overcome by guilt or heartbreak that Lauren now hates him that he became a DeathSeeker? Or was he just busy thinking of a response to placate her until it was too late?]]
* AngstWhatAngst: If [[spoiler:Shaun]] survives the events of the game, he doesn't seem at all traumatized by the ordeal he's suffered through at the hands of the killer. Madison also counts, as unlike Ethan and Norman, she's not bothered much by the harrowing events she goes through over the course of the game. Then again, it is unclear how much time passes between the final chapter and the epilogue.
* AscendedMeme: The tagline for ''VideoGame/BeyondTwoSouls'' is [[YouNoTakeCandle "Press triangle to blockbuster"]].
* AssPull: The reveal that [[spoiler:Scott Shelby, one of the player characters, is the Origami Killer]] can come across as this. While it doesn't come completely out of nowhere, and there's plenty of {{Foreshadowing}} if you know where to look, some gamers still see the twist as questionable, wondering how someone who [[spoiler:is as overweight and unfit as Scott]] could possibly set up the trials for Ethan, or how [[spoiler:he never once lets on his true identity even when [[InternalMonologue thinking to himself]]--[[UndercoverWhenAlone when no one could possibly overhear him]]--[[RuleOfDrama all for the sake of a dramatic reveal]]]]. There's also the scene where [[spoiler:the clock shop owner is killed off-screen and Shelby is shocked and panicked upon discovering his dead body--despite the twist later revealing that ''he was the one who did it'']]. Making it even worse is that [[GameplayAndStorySegregation depending on your choices made while playing, the reveal can completely contradict how he has been acting]] ([[spoiler:in fact the only way every choice you make as Scott can make sense is if you played with knowledge of the reveal and/or were [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential deliberately playing him as cruelly as possible just for the sake of it]]]]).
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxIbIkycXwU Painful Memories.]] It's especially gut-wrenching in the scene where Ethan [[spoiler:performs CPR on Shaun, sobbing and desperately begging Shaun not to leave him.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tSaWMrRlx4 Ethan Mars' main theme.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkSxHQFIQBI Madison Paige's main theme]].
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD9hE_Xdspk Norman Jayden's main theme.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmgvr-TdsRo Scott Shelby's main theme.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhvFfP9MTOc Lauren Winter's main theme.]] Made more awesome by the fact that Lauren is the only non-playable major character with her own main theme.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Madison and her playable segments are rather controversial. Some perceive her as a well written and strong female character who is independent enough to help Ethan in his quest to save his son, going as far as to put herself in danger to find clues to the child's whereabouts. Others argue that Madison is an unnecessary form of fan-service that adds nothing to the story; several times, she is attacked by sexually violent aggressors such as the nightmares in her debut, Adrian Baker who tries to sexually assault her with an electric drill as she is strapped to a table, and Paco Mendez who forces her at gunpoint to strip naked (though she only gets to her bra at the max). It gives the impression that it's all a creepy attempt at FanService. To paraphrase ''WebVideo/TwoBestFriendsPlay'', in all her scenes she is either a [[DamselInDistress victim]], a [[FlorenceNightingaleEffect wetnurse]] or a [[MsFanservice sex object]]. Not to mention how some of her endings are portrayed regarding Ethan.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Madison's dream, albeit downplayed. It does drive the story--Madison, too stressed to sleep in her own place, checks into a motel and meets Ethan--but the explanation for it was cut from the final version of the game. The explanation for the nightmare doesn't make a lot of sense either: Madison was traumatized by her time as a reporter during the Iraq war, wherein she failed to prevent an unfolding terrorist bombing. And yet her nightmares are about having her home invaded and then being killed by masked burglars.
* CompleteMonster:
** "The Doc" (Chapter 34): [[FauxAffablyEvil Dr. Adrian Baker]], aka [[MadDoctor Doctor Death]], at first seems to be a harmless old man despite being a drug dealer and associate of crime boss Paco Mendez, but is in fact a sadistic torturer. A former surgeon who enjoys operations, Baker grows bored with retirement and becomes a SerialKiller who habitually kidnaps, tortures, and dissects his victims to death with power tools, both for amusement and minor slights; his victims range from a man he suspected to be a government spy to an attempt on a Bible solicitor. Baker enjoys [[AndIMustScream keeping his victims conscious]] as he kills them, and implies that he's [[ILoveTheDead a necrophile]] as well when he takes an attraction to heroine Madison Page and attempts to molest her if he thinks she's dead.
** The Taxidermist" (prequel {{DLC}}): [[TaxidermyIsCreepy Leland White]] is the depraved titular SerialKiller, whom Madison investigates under suspicion of him being the Origami Killer, only to discover that he's somehow much more wicked. He appears to be a quiet and lonely man, but when Madison breaks into his house, it's discovered he murdered about a dozen women, whom he stuffs to preserve their bodies all around his house to keep as "[[LivingDollCollector dolls]]". The player can witness Leland talking to these corpses about new "friends" he has in mind to bring home. If alerted to Madison's presence, Leland will take a sadistic and childish joy in hunting her down, and gloating about adding her to his collection.
%%Do not add the Origami Killer or his father back in, per the Complete Monster Cleanup thread.
* DelusionConclusion: Because no explanation is given concerning Agent Norman Jayden's ARI glasses, players like LetsPlay/GeekRemix have speculated that they're a figment of his imagination - partly because Jayden is canonically portrayed as a drug addict who hallucinates in several scenes, but mostly because this theory makes as much sense as any of the other unexplained elements in the game. It's been confirmed that a lot of explanatory scenes were arbitrarily cut from the game, so the explanation behind the shades may have ended up becoming a casualty as well.
* DoNotDoThisCoolThing: The story's awesome and dramatic and everything, but the [[DancingBear single most awesome thing in the game]] is ARI -- CoolShades that [[GogglesDoSomethingUnusual do all kinds]] of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsQT3mbvVWY awesome things]] via {{Cyberspace}}; FingerprintingAir, accessing the FBI OmniscientDatabase, ''turning a prison cell of an office into SceneryPorn'', and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking letting you bounce a ball off a wall like in a prison flick without a ball or a wall.]] [[spoiler:Too bad overexposure to it (maybe or maybe not when combined with Triptocaine) leads to death]].
* FanficFuel:
** Any of the main characters' lives after the GoldenEnding.
** Jayden's [[MysteriousPast backstory]], including how he got his scar and became addicted to Triptocaine, is a popular source of inspiration for fanfic writers.
** Ethan, Madison and Jayden working together to find Shaun.
* FanPreferredCouple: It helps that the relationships actually supported by the game come off as forced and awkward, and are often accused of bad writing.
** [[HoYay Blake and Jayden]] by fans who choose to interpret their hostility to each other as BelligerentSexualTension.
** Ethan and Jayden. If Ethan is arrested, there’s a scene where Jayden strokes his hair after he’s interrogated and beaten by Blake. Jayden overall seems really determined to prove Ethan’s innocence, to the point that he willingly breaks the law and starts his own investigation on a hunch that Ethan isn’t the killer.
* FanNickname:
** 'Not-Jason' for Shaun.
** ARI: detective spectacles = 'detectacles'!
** Norman is often called 'Nahman Jayden' as a jab at his thick ([[FakeAmerican generic]]) [[UsefulNotes/AmericanAccents Northeastern accent]]. Another nickname for him is Nomnom Jayden.
** Japanese fans have been known to transcribe Ethan as E3 (E-san).
* FanonDiscontinuity: Fans of Jayden tend to pretend the scene of Jayden [[spoiler:hallucinating the tanks outside of the ARI]] in the Case Closed ending never happened and have it end with [[EarnYourHappyEnding him getting over his addiction and flushing the Triptocaine down the toilet]]. Notably, most Youtube videos of Jayden's story/ending end with the flushing scene and edit out the following scene.
* GoodBadBugs:
** A rare glitch can happen in certain parts of the game where the nude model of Madison will be in place of a normal clothed one.
** In "The Old Warehouse," if the player reads Ethan's thoughts and quickly walks to the drywell while his voice clip is playing, the prompt to shout "Shaun" never turns off, making it possible for Ethan to scream "SHAUN!!" all throughout the confrontation with the killer. [[MemeticMutation Many found it hilarious.]]
** In "Sleazy Place," there is a glitch that causes Lauren to constantly dart back and forth from the bed and through the walls at [[Film/{{Spaceballs}} ludicrous speed]].
* HarsherInHindsight:
** If you lose the pretend swordfight against Jason during the prologue, Ethan will fall down and play dead. Shaun will then walk over to Ethan and kneel beside him as if making sure he's okay. [[spoiler:It's uncomfortably similar to the scene that occurs if Ethan gets shot by the police during the last chapter, where Shaun will cry over his father's body and beg him to wake up.]]
** Scott Shelby has a fair number of heartwarming and/or heroic moments throughout the game, all of which become this when [[spoiler:he's revealed to be the Origami Killer]].
** InUniverse, if you win the sword fight against Jason, Ethan will pretend to cut him down while Jason dramatically utters "My life...has come to an end..." In the very next level, Jason suffers his PlotTriggeringDeath.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** The "Press X to Jason" meme is a lot funnier now that a different [[Franchise/FridayThe13th Jason]] is in ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'' as a DLC character with the purchase prompt even stating "Press X to Purchase Jason."
** The infamous "Shaun" bug becomes especially hilarious now that ''VideoGame/Fallout4'' is out and the protagonist spent a very big part of the game searching for their son who is named, guess it, Shaun. There's even a mod for it.
* HoYay:
** Jayden and Blake. During "Shrink and Punches", if you stop Blake from punching Dupre, he'll get very close to Jayden's face. A little too close.
*** "I wonder what hole Blake's crawled into."
*** "I better watch my back with that Blake guy."
*** Blake to Jayden: "Was that your first time?" He was referring to if Jayden shoots Nathaniel, but when taken out of context...
** When Jayden rescues Ethan from the interrogation room, he strokes his hair while helping him up.
** Jayden's awfully good at knotting a necktie from the front...
* HypeBacklash: Opinions about the game have become significantly more critical in the years after its release.
* IronWoobie: Ethan, depending on how you play him. Also, Madison.
* ItWasHisSled: Despite it being the driving question of the story, it has become common knowledge now that [[spoiler:Scott is the Origami Killer and is a DetectiveMole trying to sabotage the investigation on his crimes.]]
* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: [[RabidCop Carter Blake]] is one of the most unpleasant, psychopathic characters in the game and he's not even a villain. His [[HairTriggerTemper violent temper]], [[LackOfEmpathy lack of remorse towards the people he assaults in his pursuit to catch the title serial killer]] and his penchant for PoliceBrutality, almost makes him more [[HateSink detestable]] than the Origami Killer himself.
%%%% * JerkassWoobie: [[spoiler:Shelby]].
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Jayden, despite being the only protagonist without a canon love interest.
* MemeticLoser: Some fans see Norman as this due to his tendency to always get into trouble in his chapters and his lines sounding awkward due to his voice actor's accent. His subplot with his drug addiction and his character being subject to TheManyDeathsOfYou certainly doesn't do him any favors.
* MemeticMutation:
** Press 'X' to JASON. [[VideoGame/PressXToJason There's even a flash game!]]
** The market chase.[[labelnote:Explanation]]While Norman is chasing Korda through a market, some versions of the game allow the player to fail every button prompt without Korda escaping, resulting in a chase scene that looks straight out of ''Series/MrBean''. This went viral after a video started circulating of someone doing this while blaring music from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' and ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'', cackling hysterically throughout the entire process.[[/labelnote]]
** "The balloon! Gotta get the balloon!"[[note]]The alternative to the above "JASON" prompt, which gained overnight infamy after its usage in a WebVideo/TwoBestFriendsPlay stream of the game.[[/note]]
** I'm here to see [[Music/MFDoom MF DOOM]]. [[note]]An [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZrYFGigX8k edit of the "I'm here to see Paco" scene]] that gained a lot of popularity after being referenced by Music/SiIvaGunner.[[/note]]
** SHAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUN! [[note]]The name tends to come up due to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t0uCWjQ6Og an infamous glitch]] where the prompt to say his name comes up nonstop at the end of the game.[[/note]]
* MoralEventHorizon:
** The Origami Killer may have an understandable motivation, and has grown up with a troubled past. But at the end, if [[spoiler:Ethan has succeeded in all his trials and found his son, in one scenario it appears that Shelby intends on shooting him and leaving Shaun to die anyway.]] For some, [[spoiler:Scott's manipulation of Lauren]] counts more.
--->'''Lauren:''' You killed my son, [[spoiler:Scott]]. Were you thinking about that when [[spoiler:you held me in your arms?]]
** Lt. Blake has two potential moments: beating Ethan up to know if he's the Origami Killer, [[spoiler:and ordering his death]].
** Kramer wanting to protect his son at any cost may be somewhat understandable, but his completely unwarranted comments about Lauren [[spoiler:(if she died)]] being a whore and the victim Gordi killed being "street trash" are far less so. Considering he says this just as Shelby is walking away, it almost seems designed as an invocation of this trope.
* {{Narm}}:
** The kids' stoic line-readings and [[OohMeAccentsSlipping inexplicable French accents]]. [[spoiler:John's]] cries for help when he's stuck in the water pipe stand out the most. He could not sound any more disinterested even if he tried:
--->"Help...help...help."
** Similarly, [[spoiler:Scott]] begging for help [[spoiler:in the finale against Jayden before he falls to his death]] sound like he's ''incredibly'' uninterested in actually getting any help.
** Several characters mispronouncing "origami" as "arigami" or "ori-gammy", with Gordi Kramer being the worst offender. It's actually pronounced "OH-ree-GAW-Mee" in Japanese.
** The same three voice clips of Ethan calling for Jason are recycled every time the "Jason" prompt is available, and none of them sound like he's particularly worried.
** Blake's [[AccentUponTheWrongSyllable "FUCK-inASS HOOOOOLE!"]] when Norman pisses him off at the station. He'll say this no matter what option you pick, even if he was calm a moment earlier. If you choose the calm option, Blake says it in ''that exact manner'' despite his body language clearly not matching his words. It's as if the developers accidentally assigned the wrong line to play at this point.
** The above "SHAAAUUUN" glitch in GoodBadBugs can turn the entire warehouse scene into a truckload of narm.
** The entire market chase. From the amount of ways to fail to [[DickDastardlyStopsToCheat some of Miroslav Korda's methods to get away]], such as knocking down store things like a child to ''releasing chickens to bother Norman''. Norman adds to the Narm by being annoyed by the chickens. For extra narm points, fail every button prompt. It makes Norman looks like a complete klutz and more like [[Film/TheNakedGun Frank Drebin]] rather than a [=Se7en=]-esque investigator.
** Madison's downright hilarious "Nee-Yah!" sound that she makes during action scenes.
** The way Jayden pronounces his own first name with a Boston accent ("Nawmen") strikes some people as funny.
** The sex scene between [[spoiler:Ethan and Madison]] is awkward enough that even gaming websites [[http://kotaku.com/not-even-the-ps4-can-save-heavy-rains-terrible-sex-scen-1762190655 took to mocking it]] due to its stiff animation, poor sound sync and flimsy story justification.
** Several of the game's villains are often [[EvilLaugh maniacally laughing]] during their combat scenes, because attempting to torture and/or kill someone clearly doesn't make them evil enough.
** Mad Jack's "Go [[PrecisionFStrike fuck]] yourself in the ass!" line reaches into this. It doesn't sound nearly as intimidating as the developers probably thought it would.
** The fight between Jayden and Mad Jack is intense. The music...not so much.
** The way Jayden screams when [[spoiler:he gets crushed to death in the junkyard if he fails to escape in time]].
** Any villainy Paco might have had is completely torpedoed by the fact that he sounds an awful lot like [[WebAnimation/HomestarRunner Strong Bad]].
** While Shelby beats the crap out of [[spoiler:Charles Kramer after his (either failed or half-successful) attempt to kill Shelby and Lauren, Kramer ends up bent forwards over his desk in a...compromising position.]]
* OneSceneWonder: Jason, for better or worse, is one of the most memorable characters in the game solely due to MemeticMutation. He dies at the very beginning during the introductory chapters.
* PlayerPunch:
** Goddammit, why did [[spoiler:Scott Shelby]] have to be the Origami Killer?
** Depending on your actions, there could be several more. Made worse by the fact they're probably ''all your fault''!
* PortingDisaster: The [=PlayStation=] 4 remaster of the game. While it uses high-definition textures and runs in full 1080p resolution, it suffers from most of the same bugs and glitches the original release had, is still locked to 30 frames per second, and uses motion controls that do not always function correctly. It also does not include the downloadable episode ''The Taxidermist'' from the original release.
* PortmanteauCoupleName:
** Blayden for Blake and Jayden.
** Madithan or Maige for Ethan and Madison.
** Shelter for Scott and Lauren.
** Ethan and Jayden have several: Mayden, Jars, Jaydars (suggested by Ethan's actor, Pascal Langdale, in [[https://www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DQTD25yU0j0s&usg=AOvVaw0PnlfBZT2DtN9va5VhJQW5 this interview]]) and, most recently, Northan.
* TheScrappy:
** Jason was instantly disliked by many fans because of his incredibly stupid behavior in the prologue, which ultimately led to him getting killed. It's a result of poor writing: originally he was to be a younger character, possibly four to six, who would be more prone to wandering off and wouldn't be so careful on a busy street. To make the story a little less dark, the writers aged him up during development, but they didn't bother revising his behavior.
** Grace is detested by the vast majority of players. [[GriefInducedSplit She divorced Ethan after Jason's death]], which is (presumed by many) to be true for many marriages that suffer similar tragedies. What does it is the fact [[KickTheDog she also claimed virtually everything he owned save for full custody of Shaun, and verbally berates him about Jason's death after Shaun goes missing]]. There's also a point where Grace believes Ethan could be the Origami Killer just based on an unexplained event that happened before their separation; though she does admit that there may be no connection to the murders, it seems half-hearted at best, which makes her even more hated.
** While Lt. Carter Blake was meant to be hated for his HairTriggerTemper PoliceBrutality tendencies, many fans and critics alike hate how easily he gets away with it. Throughout the game, he violently assaults several people (one of which is an innocent civilian, not a suspect), declares Ethan to be the Origami Killer and puts out a warrant out for his arrest base on very little evidence, potentially points a gun at and threatens to kill a federal officer, and tries to get Jayden sent home before they find Shaun, all of which he does without being brought up on charges or being taken off the case. The worst of it comes in the games endings as Blake seemingly becomes a KarmaHoudini in the GoldenEnding and you can only punish him by getting [[spoiler:either Ethan or Jayden]] killed.
* ShipsThatPassInTheNight: Ethan and Lauren have a small following despite having never met. This does make some sense considering many believe it to have been [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot wasteful that they never met since they share the trauma of losing a child and Lauren could have helped Ethan save his son to make up for having never been given the chance to save hers]]. Not to mention the pairs the game pushes or at least teases have their own problems.
* SignatureScene:
** The Lizard trial, which was featured prominently in the trailers and is known for showing just how far Ethan is willing to go to save his son.
** [[MemeticMutation "JASON?! JAASOON!!?? JAAAAAAASSSOONN??!!]]
** The final chapter in the warehouse. Known for being the chapter where Ethan, Madison, and/or Norman make an effort to stop the Origami Killer and save Shaun. This leads to many emotional (and unintentionally hilarious) moments. This chapter can also go a [[SuddenDownerEnding less desirable way]].
* StrangledByTheRedString: Potentially [[spoiler:Ethan and Madison]]. The romance happens in a inappropriate and nonsensical sex scene, and the two in question have virtually no chemistry before ''or'' after it.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** While Lauren Winter is decently used in the game, some wish that she should've taken on the spot as the lead female instead of Madison since she has a much more direct connection to the game's story. It also would have been nice for her to meet other main characters, particularly Ethan as they both share the trauma of losing a child.
** Conversely, this also applies to Madison but for different reasons. Of the main characters, she is easily the least developed and the most peripheral to the investigation in the plot. If her status as an reporter and her goal of writing about the case got more focus instead of her being relegated to Ethan’s LoveInterest and the designated [[MsFanservice fanservice dispenser]], she could have been a more compelling character. It doesn’t help that she can be killed off fairly early with little impact on the story.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: The game attempts to paint The Origami Killer in a sympathetic light. While it was always going to be an uphill battle to make players feel bad for a [[WouldHurtAChild child killer]], [[spoiler:Scott]] does himself no favors by [[spoiler:tricking the grieving mother one of children he killed into helping destroy evidence and possibly into a semi-romantic relationship]]. If that weren't enough, him trying to kill [[spoiler:Ethan and Shawn anyway (even after Ethan passed all his trials) in every version of the final level where Ethan makes it to the warehouse (except the version where he comes alone, which is the only one where Ethan will die anyway no matter what)]], thus breaking his own rules will probably destroy whatever sympathy you had for him.
* TheWoobie:
** Ethan's life is already pretty miserable after Jason's death, and it only gets worse throughout the game.
** Poor Norman also gets his fair share of woobie moments, with his jerkass colleagues constantly making life difficult, his drug/ARI addiction, and the number of times he gets the crap beaten out of him. The player can even make choices where they can [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjGjhiUqFBM&feature=related make the increasingly stressed-out Norman look like a complete moron in front of his peers.]] The poor guy doesn't even catch a break in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viS4VO1RCJE most of his possible endings.]]
*** When Jayden investigates the scene at the nightclub, one of his thoughts just emphasizes his woobieness:
--->'''Jayden:''' I am sick and tired of getting the shit kicked out of me on this investigation!
** There's also Lauren, a mother mourning the loss of her only child. [[spoiler:And there really is no happy ending in store for her: she either dies over the course of the game, or survives only to find out that the sweet private detective she's grown attached to while trying to track down her son's killer ''is'' her son's killer. Ouch.]] [[spoiler:Lauren does get a somewhat positive ending, where she kills the Origami Killer herself to exact her revenge.]]
** Poor Shaun, who had to watch his older brother die and his father be put into a coma at the same time. Two years later, he's dealing with his parents' divorce and is having a difficult time in school. You can see that his experiences have had a huge impact on him, turning the once cheerful Shaun into a very somber, quiet child. Then he gets kidnapped...
