!!YMMV tropes present in the book:
* AccidentalAesop: The Yule Ball subplot seems to have the Aesop of "Don't be afraid to settle for a date one night and seize the day before you lose your opportunity." Harry and Ron could have gotten dates easily since a lot of girls were asking Harry out, but Harry was turning them down because he was drumming up the nerve to ask Cho, and Ron specifically wants a pretty girl, much to Hermione's offense. It turns out that Hermione wanted Ron to ask her, but was insulted that he saw her as a last resort, long after she got a date. Cho also implies she would have wanted to go out with Harry, but Cedric asked her first. Harry notes wryly that procrastination is overrated.
* AccidentalInnuendo: Hagrid is stewing over Madame Maxime rejecting him and playing the IAmBigBoned card:
-->''"I'm not botherin' with'' her ''no more, I promise yeh that. Big bones...[[IWillShowYouX I'll give her big bones]]."''
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Was Barty Crouch Jr. really scared of being sent to Azkaban or were these CrocodileTears to gain sympathy from the jury? Perhaps a mixture of both? [[spoiler: Also was he truly a loyal servant to Voldemort or did exposure to the dementors/years of being under the Imperius Curse delusion him into thinking so, or maybe a case of ThenLetMeBeEvil and/or HadToComeToPrisonToBeACrook? And if the latter two options are true, why does Voldemort call him "my most faithful servant?" Voldemort lies, yeah, but that's no small thing to call a Death Eater (though Voldemort didn't witness the trial).]] Also, did Barty actively torture the Longbottoms, or was he just an accomplice?
*** [[spoiler:On that note, his giving Neville the Herbology book over a cup of tea after scaring him with the spiders and Cruciatus Curse in class. Was it ''just'' to manipulate Neville into having the resources Harry would need? Or was Crouch Jr. really sorry that Neville, an innocent party, lost his parents because of what the Lestranges did? Crouch Jr. knows what it's like to lose a parent out of love for you, and to see a family torn apart. Because as fake-Moody finds out, Harry ''doesn't'' talk to Neville about Herbology and it was a really roundabout way to give him the information.]]
*** Also during the trial, he may have been aware that his father would never let him off, so he put on the CrocodileTears to make his father look bad in front of the court and destroy his father's reputation.
** There's also Ludovic Bagman. Was he truly an innocent person who was tricked into passing information to the Death Eaters or did he do so willingly? If the second interpretation is true, was he simply an informant or was he himself a full blown Death Eater? Part of this interpretation comes from his given name meaning "devotee of the lord" which could refer to Lord Voldemort. Moody does mention that Bagman is an idiot, and Bagman isn't exactly the most thoughtful person.
** Was Barty Crouch Sr. really an irresponsible {{Workaholic}} whose SkewedPriorities caused him to neglect his son while he was growing up? Or was he simply burdened by the reality of the wizarding world being in a state of open warfare during the bulk of his son's formative years and was just fulfilling his responsibility as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement to keep the public safe at the expense of spending time with his family?
** A small one, but the hostages for the Second Task. Harry and Fleur's make plenty of sense - Dumbledore would know Harry's best friend, and Madam Maxime would know Fleur's sister - but Viktor and Cedric's are girls they've only been seeing for a short amount of time. Perhaps all the hostages were chosen based off the champion's dates for the Yule Ball? In that event, the teachers would notice that Harry had one dance with Parvati and let her dance with another boy for most of the night, and guess Ron would be a better hostage. Fleur's date was Roger Davies, but he wasn't her first choice, so did Madam Maxime know that? As for Viktor, given how he's not really described as having a lot of friends (and only fans), was Hermione favoured for that reason?
** Ron's line, "Hermione, you're a girl." It sounds ridiculous at first, but could it be that Ron was just at that moment realizing that, yes, Hermione is a ''girl'' (eg actually someone he could be attracted to)? Given how jealous he is over Krum just a few chapters later, it's possible that this moment heralded the first time Ron ever actually looked at Hermione in a non-platonic sense, but didn't know how to express that.
** The offscreen Dementor's action at the end of the book. Did it eat [[spoiler:Barty Crouch Jr.'s]] soul because it recognized him as an escapee from Azkaban and it reacted out of rage? It's already been established that the Dementors hate when someone manages to leave Azkaban. Or did it do it because the Dementors are already in league with Voldemort and it wanted to [[HeKnowsTooMuch prevent him from being able to testify]]?
* CrazyIsCool: Alastor Moody and his violent dustbins. They don't call him "Mad-Eye" for nothing. [[spoiler: This was actually part of Crouch Jr.'s cover-up for kidnapping and impersonating Mad-Eye, but the trope still applies to the ''real'' Mad-Eye, who is known for only ever drinking from his hip flask among other things. Hell, it applies to Crouch Jr. himself, for that matter.]]
* EpilepticTrees: The first printings of the book, both in the UK and US, had James appear before Lily in the Priori Incantatem scene. This would have meant that Lily had actually died ''before'' James, contrary to how Harry's backstory is presented in the previous books. Fans thus wondered if there was some conspiracy-tier significance behind this, making all sorts of theories as to why James could have died later -- until later printings quietly fixed the order and J.K. Rowling later admitted it was just a mistake. In the film version, [[TakeAThirdOption James and Lily seem to come out at the same time]].
* EvilIsCool: Thanks to how [[TheChessmaster intelligent]] and [[ManipulativeBastard manipulative]] he is, up to the point where he actually succeeds in [[spoiler: bringing Voldemort back to full power]], it's no surprise that [[spoiler: Barty Crouch Jr.]] is hit with this.
* FanPreferredCutContent: The book has some cut content the author has discussed and that fans would have enjoyed seeing kept.
** Draco TheBully having a conversation with another Death Eater's kid who he considers an equal, while also describing how Harry is ShroudedInMyth from the perspective of Voldemort's Death Eaters.
** The first draft featured a MageBornOfMuggles distant Weasley cousin who is sorted into Slytherin based on her intelligence and ambition, in spite of her blood status, and serves as a source of gossip about Slytherin goings-on. Rowling abandoned the character due to considering her subplot implausible, but many fans wish she'd been preserved in some capacity.
* {{Fanon}}:
** Despite his role as a RedHerring in this book, many fans believed Ludo Bagman to be a Death Eater or at least a supporter. Despite his ChuckCunninghamSyndrome for the rest of the series, this theory is still fairly common.
** Hermione is sometimes believed to have invented the Four-Point Spell herself, given that Harry is the only one who is seen to use it, and its incantation (''Point Me!'') is in modern English, rather than Latin.
* GeniusBonus: The Durmstrang Institute's name is a {{spoonerism}} of the German phrase ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturm_und_Drang Sturm und Drang]]'', the name of an 18th century Proto-Romantic literary movement known for its glorification of subjective human emotion and experience over the cold rationalism that characterized the Enlightenment. It's a fitting name for a European school for wizards, which teaches Magic that can't necessarily be understood rationally. Particularly since the most famous ''Sturm und Drang'' participant was Creator/JohannWolfgangVonGoethe, the author of ''Theatre/{{Faust}}''--a play about a German mystical scholar who dabbles in the Dark Arts in his quest for knowledge.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** When Sirius meets up with the Trio, Hermione keeps going on about how badly Winky was treated by Crouch. When Ron tells her to give it a rest, Sirius remarks that the best way to tell a man's character is to see how he treats his inferiors, not his equals. [[{{Hypocrite}} Less than a year later, he'll be treating his own house-elf, Kreacher, like dirt on his shoe.]]
** Both Harry and Cedric are initially outraged that the Quidditch pitch has been turned into a maze for the third task; they're assured that they'll have their pitch back once the task is over. [[spoiler: Cedric never gets to see the Quidditch pitch back to normal, since he is killed by Voldemort and Wormtail during the Task.]] In a similar vein, when Cedric's father first meets Harry, he references Cedric beating Harry at Quidditch in the previous book, telling Cedric he'll be telling his grandchildren about the time he beat Harry Potter. [[spoiler: Thanks to Voldemort, he never even got as far as having children before his death.]]
** This books also marks the beginning of JK Rowling phasing out Quidditch as a major subplot. Later, Harry, Fred and George [[spoiler: are given a ''lifetime ban from Quidditch'' by Umbridge in ''Order of the Phoenix,'' and once they're reinstated to the Gryffindor team, Ginny has to sub for Harry when she wins the Quidditch Cup due to detention with Snape in ''Half-Blood Prince,'']] and [[spoiler: Harry drops out of Hogwarts to go Horcrux hunting in ''Deathly Hallows,'' Hogwarts' Quidditch teams go unmentioned, and it's highly likely Voldemort or Snape cancelled the Hogwarts Quidditch Cup for that year as well.]]
** Moody says that the Unforgivable Curses will earn you a life sentence in Azkaban if you use it on another human being while telling the kids that if they all tried Avada Kedavra on him he wouldn't even get a nosebleed. He's cleared to use them for a classroom demonstration, but only with spiders, and illegally shows the students what it feels like to be under the Imperius Curse. ''Order of the Phoenix'' would eventually say why an Unforgivable Curse is called unforgivable: [[spoiler:Bellatrix Lestrange shouts to Harry that you have to ''really want'' to hurt someone badly, and that righteous fury won't cut it]]. It also explains why the real Moody was reluctant to use them on Death Eaters.
** Dumbledore tells Fudge that it is not "what someone is born, but what they grow to be" that matters. Many fans now see JK Rowling’s tweets regarding transgender issues as a contradiction of this belief, although it is a hotly-contested matter.
** Ron notes Percy's inability to recognize a joke. Cut to ''[[Literature/HarryPotterAndTheDeathlyHallows Deathly Hallows]]'' where Percy shows he ''does'' recognise and can tell a joke right before [[spoiler:Fred is killed]].
** At one point in the book, Fred and George tell their angry mother that if she yells at them now and the Hogwarts Express crashes tomorrow, [[PartingWordsRegret that'll be the last thing she ever said to them]]. In context, it's pure BlackComedy (even to Molly), but a [[Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix year later]] we find out that Molly's biggest fear is losing her family. Even worse in ''Deathly Hallows''.
** Dumbledore's remarks about Aberforth to Hagrid, notably his comment that he's "not entirely sure he can read", are amusing at the time. When, in DH, we learn about the estrangement of the two brothers, and the extent to which Albus' intelligence helped to contribute to that situation, it appears a considerably more mean-spirited thing to say. Of course, Dumbledore might not have been taking a shot -- perhaps Aberforth really can't read (and, notably, he's saying it to cheer up Hagrid, and Aberforth's nowhere in earshot).
** Fred and George becoming old due to backlash from using the aging potion. [[spoiler: This is the ''only'' time the two will grow old together.]]
** Early on in the book, Moody's offscreen EstablishingCharacterMoment is an amusing story about a commotion in his backyard - with him apparently jinxing dustbins. [[spoiler: We later find out this was actually Barty Crouch Jr. attacking him so he could impersonate him for the year.]]
** Archie the wizard who gets scolded for wearing a woman's nightgown, and refuses to wear men's trousers. Some fans consider the sequence less funny in light of Creator/JKRowling's [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_views_of_J._K._Rowling#Transgender_people comments about transgender issues]] in 2020; specifically her infamous essay that claimed men could legally enter female changing rooms and bathrooms under self-identification laws. The novel's text describing unpleasant, antagonistic reporter Rita Skeeter as having a "heavy-jawed face" and "mannish hands" with a "surprisingly strong grip" also circulated and was criticized by some in the wake of this.
** Hermione's House Elf plotline, where Hermione is jokingly portrayed as a SoapboxSadie for opposing the use of House Elves for slave labor, and for protesting the idea of HappinessInSlavery. Fast forward to ''Theatre/HarryPotterAndTheCursedChild'', which play caused a hubbub when it cast a black actress to portray Hermione and all of a sudden the portrayal of S.P.E.W. as silly and reactionary becomes two or three times more awkward than it already is.
*** The subplot also eerily foreshadows Rowling's own behavior with regard to her controversies on transgender issues, as Hermione tries to advocate for a group whose views she doesn't try to understand, takes actions which the group finds offensive and hurtful, dismisses information that doesn't suit her narrative, and believes herself an authority on the subject simply because she's read books about it, which is similar to Rowling's own behavior toward the trans community. The fact that Rowling modelled Hermione on herself as a child can make it seem like she was projecting her own flaws onto her.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Petunia is described as looking out the window "as though there had been a warning about an escaped rhinoceros." In ''Film/FantasticBeastsAndWhereToFindThem'', Newt Scamander has to recapture his escaped erumpent, which strongly resembles and harasses a rhinoceros that is trying to escape a zoo to get away from it.
** This: "Dragons! [...] Last year dementors, this year dragons, what are they going to bring into this school next?" Fans all know by now that the next year sees something far worse than any of the above: [[SadistTeacher Dolores Umbridge]] as [[TyrantTakesTheHelm The Tyrant Taking the Helm]].
** Ron asked [[spoiler: his future ''sister-in-law'' to the Yule Ball.]]
** It's now almost impossible to watch the reaping...er, choosing of the teenaged contestants in a deadly tournament without thinking, "[[Literature/TheHungerGames May the odds be ever in your favor]]" as their names are called out. At least the contestants (bar one) are volunteers.
** In this book, the villain [[spoiler:disguises himself as a high-profile Auror]] to avoid detection. It looks like someone was taking notes from [[Film/FantasticBeastsAndWhereToFindThem another powerful Dark Wizard from before his time]].
* IKnewIt: Not many people were surprised to find out that Snape was once a Death Eater. Even Harry seems more concerned that Snape might have been a FakeDefector rather than about the fact that he was revealed to be a Death Eater in the first place.
* ItWasHisSled: Voldemort gets resurrected.
* JerkassWoobie: Barty Crouch, Jr. When we first see him, he is pleading for mercy as his own father disowns him in public and orders him thrown into Azkaban. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, it then turns out his father may have been right, as Crouch Jr. turns out to have become a fanatical Death Eater who might have tortured Neville's parents into insanity, rather than being WronglyAccused as assumed.]]
* KarmicOverkill: A lot of fans tend to think that [[spoiler: Barty Crouch Jr.'s fate of receiving the Dementor's Kiss, [[FateWorseThanDeath therefore getting his soul sucked out of him,]] was undeserved.]] This is mainly because of [[spoiler: his [[FreudianExcuse backstory garnering sympathy]] from readers, him being one of the few [[UndyingLoyalty genuinely loyal]] Death Eaters due to seeing Voldemort as a father figure, and the fact that there are more [[CompleteMonster despicable]] and [[HateSink loathsome]] villains who would be more deserving of his fate.]]
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Continuing the series tradition, the introduction of new characters as well as already existing ones being made prominent created some new ships, including Harry/Cho, Cedric/Cho, Harry/Fleur, Ron/Fleur, Hermione/Krum, Hermione/Cedric, Hermione/Fleur, Krum/Fleur, Cedric/Fleur, Bill/Fleur.
* MemeticLoser: A downplayed example that went away after her next appearance in the series, but Fleur was hit with this for a while as she undoubtedly performs the absolute worst of the four champions, despite Harry supposedly being the underdog by dint of his age and inexperience - she gets the easiest dragon in the first task (which she gets told about by Madame Maxine, though to be fair Karkaroff told Krum about them, too), fails to get past the Grindylows in the second task (with Harry saving Gabrielle when nobody comes for her) and then is unceremoniously stunned by Crouch Jr. in the final task. Even Fleur herself seems ashamed with her performance.
* MisaimedFandom: The Dark Mark has become a popular tattoo among real life ''Harry Potter'' fans. As in, the tattoo worn by followers of a fanatical blood purity movement, the in-universe equivalent of a swastika.
* NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity: This entry brought the MoralGuardians out in full force against the series, ensuring this trope occurred. While still a good book in its own right, it wouldn't have been nearly as successful without all the parents, politicians, and preachers decrying it for converting children to witchcraft and Satanism. Some held burnings of it. [[DidntThinkThisThrough This required them to buy copies to burn them.]]
* OneSceneWonder:
** Despite his one-and-a-quarter chapters' worth of pagetime, [[SacrificialLamb Frank]] [[BadassNormal Bryce]] still makes quite an impression. Especially since [[spoiler:he faces Voldemort with dignity and only screams when he sees what the Dark Lord looks like]].
** [[spoiler: Barty Crouch Jr. is generally agreed by fans to be one of the (if not THE) best villains in the series. Too bad we only truly see him for a few pages undisguised (where most of his characterizations would actually apply to Moody) before he suffers a FateWorseThanDeath.]]
* {{Padding}}: There are numerous subplots and side distractions in the book that take away from what ''should'' be the main plots; the Triwizard Tournament and Voldemort's return. Hermione starting SPEW, most of the school classes, Rita Skeeter's articles, and most of the other side plots. It's no wonder the movie cut all the ones that didn't pertain to the main story of the book. It's world building and bits of character development, yes, but it makes the book feel a bit bloated with a lot of unnecessary stuff. The main plot even comes off as an afterthought as a result.
* PanderingToTheBase: A minor example, as this was the first book written after the series became big in America, and got Rowling deluged with questions about how to pronounce Hermione's name (it was also before the films started). So the scene where she tries to teach Viktor Krum how to pronounce it was intended directly for her new American fans.
* RonTheDeathEater:
** Barty Crouch Sr. is often vilified to an extreme degree. While he was a KnightTemplar and not a great parent, he was still on the side of the good guys and vital in defeating Voldemort's forces.
** Some fans portray Viktor asking Hermione to the Ball as evidence that he’s a sex predator. Although he is a seventh-year, keep in mind that Hermione is fifteen at the time, while Viktor may well be seventeen, not that big of an age difference. What’s more, there is nothing to indicate that anything inappropriate took place between them.
* ShipToShipCombat: Also, continuing the series tradition, the supporters of the new and already established ships took all new offensives for their pairings.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: This book is known for the vast amount of characters revealed and introduced (far more than any other book in the series), many of which were PutOnABus or KilledOffForReal by the end. Examples include Barty Crouch Jr, Ludo Bagman, Igor Karkaroff, Olympe Maxime, Barty Crouch Sr, Viktor Krum, and Charlie Weasley.
* UnintentionallySympathetic:
** Hermione's SPEW campaign is supposed to be an unsympathetic caricature of campus activism, but in the first half of the book, this mostly manifests as her trying to point out that it might be bad that Hogwarts relies on slavery and receiving only condescension, hostility and contempt in return, even from her best friends. This makes Hermione come across as an OnlySaneMan rather than the intended SoapboxSadie.
** [[spoiler:Barty Crouch Jr. lived a miserable life, [[WellDoneSonGuy trying to gain his father's approval]]. Then, after failing to do so, he decided to find Voldemort. Afterwards, he got thrown in Azkaban, smuggled out after suffering a year of torment from the dementors by being switched with his dying mother, and had been put under the Imperius Curse by his own father. Watching him beg for mercy at his own trial can be [[TearJerker heartwrenching]] for some, even after we find out that he was guilty for using the Cruciatus Curse (or, at the very least, just simply watching it being cast by someone else). It also doesn't help that the Imperius Curse can damage a person's mind if it's used for that long, as we see with Crouch Sr. When he's caught and forced to tell everything to Albus Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge, he soon receives the [[AFateWorseThanDeath Dementor's Kiss]]. Can be very sad for some to read. Not to mention, he also believes that Death Eaters that abandoned Voldemort should be punished, which shows that he does understand love, or at least loyalty.]]
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Fred and George, "[[ComeToGawk hoping for a glimpse of]]" Harry's [[StrawCharacter obese]] cousin Dudley, slip the "great, bullying git" a toffee which [[BodyHorror grows his tongue to a size]] which [[PayingEvilUntoEvil chokes him]] and makes his mother "sob hysterically".
* ValuesResonance: While there are several elements of Hermione's SPEW subplot [[ValuesDissonance that have not aged well]], many of her actions during her campaign that the narrative portrays negatively such as [[WhiteMansBurden not having a dialogue with the House Elves to learn and understand their viewpoint on the issues and taking actions which the group finds offensive and hurtful]] still often occur in many real life activism campaigns. The harm that results from these actions has also gained greater awareness in UsefulNotes/TheNewTwenties, making the criticism even more relevant than it was when the book was released.
* TheWoobie:
** Cedric's father has a complete breakdown after finding out about [[spoiler:the death of his son]].
** Harry gets hit with this earlier in the book: After being chosen as Champion, his life quickly goes to crap: The other three houses turn against him, believing he put his name in to snatch more glory for himself, and even Ron buys into this. This image isn't helped by Rita Skeeter's article glorifying Harry using mostly made-up garbage, which causes Harry to snap at his crush Cho and only drives a further wedge between him and Ron. Oh and on top of all this, he has to fight a ferocious dragon with only a day to prepare. All for an honour he didn't want and would gladly give up if he could.
* {{Woolseyism}}:
** In the Italian translation, Alastor Moody's nickname was changed from "Mad-Eye" to "Malocchio", which literally means "bad eye" but most commonly "EvilEye". Fitting for a paranoid man who also suffered the bad luck of countless battle injuries [[spoiler:and a year-long imprisonment and impersonation]].
** Still in the Italian translation, Portkeys are called "Passaporte" (singular: Passaporta), punning on "passaporto" (passport) and "porta" (door).

!!YMMV tropes present in the film:
* AccidentalInnuendo: Voldemort telling Harry "I can... touch you... now!" And then he does touch Harry (putting a finger on Harry's scar), which leads to Harry screaming, which leads to Voldemort making weird noises to mock his screaming, which [[TheImmodestOrgasm makes the whole scene sound like something else entirely]].
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Unlike his calm demeanour in the book, Dumbledore aggressively throttles Harry while interrogating him about his name coming out of the Goblet. Is he angry at Harry himself for seemingly breaking the rules and putting his name in, or is this AngerBornOfWorry that someone else may have done it to put Harry in danger? Possibly both?
* {{Anvilicious}}: In case you didn't realize that the Death Eaters were [[FantasticRacism Fantastic Racists]] based upon real-life racists, this movie spells it out for you by making their uniforms a PaletteSwap of the KKK. Later films would mostly be more subtle with the villains' costuming.
* CompleteMonster: [[PsychoSupporter Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Jr.]], lacking any of his [[AdaptationalVillainy novel counterpart's pathos or sympathy]], is a [[AxCrazy twitching madman]] who participated in the nightmarish torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom to [[DrivenToMadness drive them incurably insane]]. Escaping Azkaban and tending to Voldemort, Crouch [[{{Patricide}} murders his own father]] and sets up the revival of Voldemort upon the world so that the Dark Lord may enact his purges and tyrannical rule.
* DracoInLeatherPants: Barty Crouch Jr. has his share of fangirls, as can probably be expected whenever one casts Creator/DavidTennant as anything.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** After their failed attempt to put their names into the Goblet of Fire, Fred and George get into a fight and one of them can be heard saying "I'll tear your ear off!" to the other. [[spoiler: George ended up losing an ear three books later from a Death Eater.]]
** Several years after the film was made, Katie Leung accused the studio's publicity team of forcing her to deny the reams of racist abuse she suffered from fans, who inexplicably thought Cho Chang, a character with an explicitly East Asian surname, was supposed to be white.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct:
** Harry's complete breakdown after [[spoiler:he arrives back at Hogwarts with Cedric's corpse along with the news that Voldemort has returned]]. Easily one of the biggest {{Tear Jerker}}s in the film series, and widely noted to be a huge improvement over his infamous "He was their friend!" in the previous film.
** Robert Pattinson gets some love for his performance as Cedric, ''way'' before he did ''Film/{{Twilight}}'', being a lot more of a NiceGuy to Harry compared to his role in in the ''Twilight'' movies. [[spoiler:His tragic death helped solidify it.]]
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Barty Crouch Jr. blows his cover by ranting about all the effort he made to get to where he is at that moment, and then letting slip that he snuck something into a cup to achieve that goal. Do a {{spoonerism}} of Barty C and you get Music/CardiB, a famous rapper who garnered controversy for an Instagram livestream -- in which she spoke about having to hustle as a stripper before hitting it big, [[BreadEggsMilkSquick and in which]] she subsequently mentioned [[SlippingAMickey drugging]] and robbing men who she met at her strip club. And to top it all off, Cardi does that tongue thing too!
** The movie turning Durmstrang into an all-boys school became rather ironic when [[https://www.pottermore.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/durmstrang-institute Rowling revealed on Pottermore]] that it was founded by famous Bulgarian ''witch'' Nerida Vulchanova.
** Frances de la Tour plays half-giant Madam Maxime. In ''Film/IntoTheWoods'' she gets to play a full giantess.
** Hermione and Ginny's girlish grin to each other when they meet Cedric is oddly prophetic of Robert Pattinson's teen heartthrob status from ''Twilight''.
** The whole fact that Harry's incredibly handsome rival Hogwarts champion is played in [[Film/HarryPotter the movie]] by [[Film/{{Twilight}} future]] [[Creator/RobertPattinson Edward Cullen]]. And really, the rivalry between Harry's supporters and Cedric's supporters could easily be compared to the FandomRivalry between ''Harry Potter'' and ''Twilight'' -- particularly the way in which Harry and Cedric (a.k.a. Creator/DanielRadcliffe and Creator/RobertPattinson) are nothing but civil to each other while each has fans who volatilely bash their hero's rival. It doesn't help that Cedric first makes an appearance by ''jumping out of a tree''. Maybe, he was bothered? His ghost is also sparkling.
** Also, Creator/DavidTennant said in an interview at the movie premiere that he'd probably never be part of such a large fandom again. [[PromotedFanboy One year]] [[Series/DoctorWho later]]...Crouch Jr. also uses a long, handheld tool, has a chest that's BiggerOnTheInside, changes faces/actors and his last line is "[[{{Foreshadowing}} I'll be welcomed back like a hero]]."
*** Even funnier, Creator/RogerLloydPack who plays Barty Crouch Sr. appeared as a villain during Tennant's run of Doctor Who, essentially switching the sides of morality between father and son.
** The penultimate chapter is called "The Parting of the Ways." What's the name of the first ''Doctor Who'' episode that David Tennant appears in? [[Recap/DoctorWhoS27E13ThePartingOfTheWays That's right]].
** Overlapping with HarsherInHindsight: Filch putting on music as Professor [=McGonagall=] dances with Ron can remind many of [[Series/GameOfThrones Walder Frey]] (portrayed by David Bradley) ordering to play "The Rains of Castamere" during the Red Wedding.
** The fans' uproar over Hermione wearing pink instead of blue to the Yule Ball. Fast forward to ''Literature/BalletShoes'' where a small fuss is made over Pauline (Emma Watson's character) getting a blue gown for a premiere. So fans finally get to see Emma wearing blue at a formal occasion. And then she stars in ''Film/BeautyAndTheBeast2017'', where Belle's dress is iconically blue - and this time in the SheCleansUpNicely moment the dress stays the same colour as it was in the original. And in ''Film/LittleWomen2019'', Meg (played by Emma Watson again) wore a blue dress for a party in the book and again it's pink in the film.
** Creator/RobertPattinson being cast as [[Film/TheBatman2022 Batman]] creates a lot of this:
*** It becomes much more [[BlackComedy darkly funny]] when you remember that [[Creator/RalphFiennes Voldemort's actor]] [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie provided the voice of Alfred]]. In other words [[spoiler:Batman's servant just killed Batman.]] Not only that, but that film [[spoiler:features Voldemort himself as a major antagonist during the third act, though there he's voiced by Creator/EddieIzzard]].
*** [[Creator/JasonIsaacs Lucius Malfoy]] is also in that scene where Voldemort is "reborn". Jason Issacs voiced Ra's al Ghul in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanUnderTheRedHood'', which features a very similar resurrection scene featuring Jason Todd and the Lazarus Pit.
*** Even [[Creator/GaryOldman Commissioner]] [[Film/TheDarkKnightTrilogy Gordon]] makes an appearance!
*** Creator/ZoeKravitz, who later starred in ''Film/FantasticBeastsTheCrimesOfGrindelwald'' as Leta Lestrange, would co-star with Pattinson's Batman as ComicBook/{{Catwoman}}.
*** Creator/ColinFarrell was also in both ''Film/FantasticBeastsAndWhereToFindThem'' and ''Film/TheBatman2022'', as Percival Graves [[spoiler:(actually Creator/JohnnyDepp's Gellert Grindelwald [[CastAsAMask in disguise]])]] and The Penguin respectively.
*** The ''Film/FantasticBeasts'' series would also feature Creator/EzraMiller as Credence, who played ComicBook/TheFlash in [[Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice multiple]] [[Film/SuicideSquad2016 films]] [[Film/JusticeLeague2017 alongside]] [[Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague another]] [[Film/TheFlash2023 Batman]][[note]]And in the case of the latter film, ''[[Creator/MichaelKeaton two]]'' [[Creator/BenAffleck other]] Batmen[[/note]].
*** Creator/HenryCavill was in the running to play Cedric, meaning that [[Film/ManOfSteel Superman]] lost a role to Batman.
* HollywoodHomely: An odd backhanded variation. Hermione is given a SheCleansUpNicely moment at the Yule Ball - with stunned reaction from Harry and a "she looks beautiful" from Parvati. Except that not only is Emma Watson already far prettier than Hermione is described in the books, the films after the first didn't bother to dress her down or make her plain. She has nicely curled hair, perfect make-up and flattering casual wear in every other scene - so Harry's stunned reaction just looks odd.
* LoveToHate: Rita Skeeter does not have a lot of screen time, and she's not quite as antagonistic as she was in the book. But it's widely agreed that Miranda Richardson was perfect casting, and she's clearly having a lot of fun in the role. The result is that Rita is lots of fun, in spite of being the worst kind of journalist.
* MemeticMutation: [[Memes/HarryPotter Has its own page]].
* {{Narm}}: Has [[Narm/HarryPotter its own page]].
* NarmCharm:
** Although the SheCleansUpNicely scene has its share of Narm, the shot of Hermione nervously peeking out from behind the wall and descending the stairs is still rather cute - especially for the {{Adorkable}} expression on Creator/EmmaWatson's face.
** The dragon scene is over the top to the point of ridiculousness - it easily breaks free of the chains holding it and chases Harry around the school, even destroying a tower, making it look like the safety precautions the students were assured of were rather lax. Even so, the scene is still quite exciting, despite the silliness.
** Amos' over the top reaction to [[spoiler:his son's death]]. Shouting, blubbering, and ineloquent - just about everything you'd expect from [[spoiler:a parent who just saw their child's corpse]].
* {{Padding}}: Rita Skeeter's scenes could be received as this, as she turns up a couple times to antagonize Harry and his friends as easy fodder for her tabloid journalism, enough for Hermione to become especially hostile towards her harassment, before completely vanishing by the final act. This is especially jarring considering she plays a larger role in the book, where her conflict with Harry finds a more proper conclusion.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** The presence of Creator/DavidTennant and Creator/RobertPattinson in this movie led to a slew of jokes about ''Series/DoctorWho'' and ''Film/{{Twilight}}'' (and, later on for the latter, [[Film/TheBatman2022 Batman]]).
** Roger Davies is played by Henry Lloyd-Hughes, otherwise known as [[Series/TheInbetweeners Mark Donovan]] or [[Series/IndianSummers Ralph Whelan]].
** Creator/CharlotteRitchie, better known as [[Series/CallTheMidwife Nurse Barbara Gilbert]] or [[Series/GhostsUK Alison Cooper]], makes an early appearance as an unnamed Hogwarts student.
* RootingForTheEmpire: PlayedForLaughs: Fred and George are cheering for the Hungarian Horntail when it breaks its chains and causes mayhem across the stadium.
* SignatureScene:
** The promos went wild with the Horntail battle/chase, but the Yule Ball and the climactic graveyard showdown might have a better claim, each for very different reasons.
** The trial of Igor Karkaroff. Especially when the titular person rats out Barty Crouch Jr., only revealing the Jr. part after a {{beat}}.
* {{Squick}}:
** "Mad-Eye Moody" [[spoiler:transforming back into his true form, Barty Crouch Jr]]. Moody should be missing an eye (hence the magical prosthetic), so [[spoiler:it means that every time Crouch Jr. takes the Polyjuice, he has to voluntarily lose one of his own eyes and one of his own legs in the transformation]]. There's even a moment where Crouch Jr. is desperately reaching for the belt that holds the magical eye to take it off, [[spoiler:because his eye is growing back once the Polyjuice Potion wore off, and the magical eye is most likely "fighting for space".]]
** In both the book and the film, Viktor Krum is smitten with Hermione, and Hermione mentions he is "very physical". People forget the fact that Krum is 17-18 by the time of ''Goblet of Fire'', while Hermione is only ''15''!
** Moaning Myrtle flirting with Harry in the bathtub, trying to peek at his crotch, and leaning on his shoulder, considering Creator/DanielRadcliffe was 15 while Myrtle's actress Creator/ShirleyHenderson was around '''40''', and Henderson very much looked her age in that scene too, making it even squickier.
* Main/SuspiciouslySimilarSong: Inaccuracies to the book aside, the non Jarvis Crocker songs in the soundtrack that are instrumentals don't really sound like ''Harry Potter'' music as much as it does a rejected score for ''Film/Batman1989'' and ''Film/BatmanReturns'', as though Music/DannyElfman was an unofficial ghost composer.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks:
** One of the biggest criticisms of the film, especially among book fans, is that it omitted much of the original book's content such as [[spoiler:Barty Crouch Jr.'s tragic backstory]] and much of the final task such as the sphinx. It didn't help that the film's director Mike Newell, who himself admitted to being ruthless when it comes to cutting scenes, ''did not even read the book that he was going to adapt''.
** Showing how some fans can take this trope to the extreme, one of the biggest complaints about the movie? Hermione's dress for the Yule Ball. It's blue in the book but pink in the film. There were ''thousands'' of complaints, even with the film's IMDB page in an edit war over listing "[[RealWomenDontWearDresses Hermione is a person who hates pink and would never wear a pink dress]]" as a PlotHole. [[note]]The costume designer said that blue was the original choice but that it simply didn't look good on Emma Watson. It's worth noting that the rest of them didn't wear the colours they had in the book for the film either - Harry went from green to black, Parvati went from pink to orange and Padma went from turquoise to pink. As for Hermione "hating pink", she's mentioned as wearing a pink dressing gown in the first book.[[/note]] Many fans have recently admitted to regretting this reaction, especially as it played to negative stereotypes about girls wearing pink.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Like in the book, Cedric and Cho's relationship barely gets any onscreen focus; it would have been nice to see a little more of it, especially as Cho's grief becomes a plot-point afterwards.

!!YMMV tropes present in the video game:
* CriticalDissonance: Critical reception was mixed-to-positive, but fans often rank is as among the worst ''Harry Potter'' games.
* GoddamnedBats: The Vampyr Mosps that appear when you use Herbivicus. They just charge at you relentlessly and get in the way of whatever puzzle you are trying to do.
* SpecialEffectFailure: At the end of the first level, you get a glimpse of the Dark Mark... which is actually part of the skybox.
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: For a long time, this game was considered by many to be the weakest in the entire franchise due to it being a complete departure from the previous games, having very little plot to speak of and was clearly rushed out the door to coincide with the release of the movie (this was the first game in the series to be an actual tie-in game, as it was also the first to feature Daniel Radcliffe on the cover). As a result, it lacks any of the charm and memorability of the previous games and is more or less just a bland button masher. These days, it's still considered to be a terrible game, but many fans would say the ''Deathly Hallows'' games, the Kinect game and the mobile game ''Hogwarts Mystery'' are the lowest points for the franchise as far as video games go.
* ThatOneLevel: Prefect's Bathroom in the GBA/DS version. The objective is you're trying to retrieve the Golden Egg that Ron accidentally dropped into the sewers. Hogwarts [[AbsurdlySpaciousSewer sewers must be pretty big]], because it just goes on and on and on and is filled with countless Grindylows and puzzles. You'll be glad when the Golden Egg ''FINALLY'' stops.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: ''Goblet of Fire'' changes the game format from an open world adventure to a linear level-based game. The fact that players could no longer explore Hogwarts turned off many fans of the previous games, so [[WinBackTheCrowd this feature was restored in the next few instalments]].
