* AlasPoorScrappy:
** [[spoiler: Despite Tina being a BaseBreakingCharacter at best and scrappy at worst, she dies sacrificing herself so that Jamie can get to safety, it made worse that unlike most victims she doesn't suffer an InstantDeathStab, instead dying while tearfully and weakly urging Jamie and Billy to run from Michael. Jamie's reaction to it seals the deal that as annoying as Tina was, her death was undeserved and that Michael once again destroyed another piece of happiness Jamie had.]]
** [[spoiler:Samantha can be just as annoying as Tina, but the way she tries to fight back against Michael, unlike most of his victims, makes some fans feel bad for her once she dies.]]
** [[spoiler: Although Mikey was an unlikeable prick without any real decent features, his death is still extremely brutal and his twitching on the ground after the rake hits him in the face is hard to witness.]]
** [[spoiler: While they are annoying Clown Cops, Deputy Nick and Deputy Tom were shown to be genuinely good natured if bumbling police officers who actually could be competent at their job, and were very passionate about it, they certainly didn't deserve a pitchfork to the throat.]]
* AssPull:
** The Man In Black. WordOfGod claims that they didn't even know who he should be before the next film was made.
** Retconning the twist ending of 4 is seen as this too.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: [[HeroWithAnFInGood Tina]] [[GenkiGirl Williams]]. A large section of the fanbase sees her as an outright scrappy who acts obnoxiously and is prone to making bad decisions, with some very selfish tendencies. However, as a result of her genuine care for Jamie, having a very adorable GenkiGirl personality as well as Wendy Kaplan's sympathetic performance, much of the fanbase has warmed to her in recent years.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: Rachel meandering around her house in a ModestyTowel (with a few LegFocus shots) gets a good bit of attention from the fanbase's heterosexual men and lesbian women.
* CatharsisFactor: [[spoiler: Loomis beating the ever-loving shit out of Michael with a plank of wood is easily one of the most satisfying defeats of Michael in the series, although it doesn't last long sadly.]]
* CompleteMonster: Michael Myers. See [[Monster/{{Halloween}} here]].
* DesignatedHero:
** Dr. Loomis is supposed to be a heroic, confident and sacrificial psychiatrist like in the previous films, but here, he's shown to be a unlikable, cranky jerk who bothers Jamie for information of Michael Myers and lashes out at her for keeping quiet and even ''uses her as bait'' to get Michael into his trap.
** Tina was meant to be a likeable and sympathetic GenkiGirl who really cares about Jamie, however for many she's extremely obnoxious and makes the unsympathetic decision to ignore a tearful Jamie's warnings that Michael is after her so she can go off and party. Although it could be intentional that Tina is a deconstruction of the FinalGirl trope and a direct contrast from her responsible and level-headed FinalGirl predecessor Rachel.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** A lot of people think that Jamie is the only reason to watch this movie, primarily for Danielle Harris [[SugarWiki/SheReallyCanAct giving a great performance]] and the fact she doesn't actually do anything obnoxious.
** Likewise a lot of fans were furious at [[spoiler:Rachel]] getting killed off, claiming she would have made a better protagonist than Tina.
* HesJustHiding:
** The non-graphic (for the franchise) nature of [[spoiler:Rachel's]] death, her character's popularity, and the way it's never directly mentioned in the next movie make it tempting to hope that she's only passed out unconscious when Jamie sees her...with her eyes open. She also screams after being stabbed, as the camera cuts away, when the franchise often plays InstantDeathStab straight.
** [[spoiler: Some fans believe that Tina might have survived for a similar reason to Rachel in that she dies a relatively non graphic death (stabbed in the chest once) to the point of actually being alive for a while after it. Although like Rachel the film makes it quite clear with Jamie's reaction that Tina is almost certainly no more.]]
** Since a scene where [[spoiler:Meeker]] is shot on-screen during the police station massacre got cut, many fans think he survived the battle.
** The kindly Deputy Charlie is last seen struggling to escape the noose Michael hangs him with. Since his body is never seen and he is never mentioned again, it can be nice to hope that he somehow survived.
** [[spoiler:While it is never explicitly said that Billy survives the attack on the hospital, most fans take it for granted that he did, and sometimes apply that sentiment to Nurse Patsey, who also has a case of WhatHappenedToTheMouse as well.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Michael floating down a river, which looks rather silly.
** Jamie screams out "Cookie Woman!" after having a vision of Tina in trouble. The line wouldn't be narm, but it's the fact Dr. Loomis, being half-crazed, is pretty much forcing Jamie into screaming out where Tina is, leading to the Cookie Woman line.
** Max's corpse is clearly fake to the point of looking like a stuffed animal, although any comedy found in the situation is quickly negated by[[spoiler: Jamie finding Rachel's corpse seconds after.]]
** Many {{fan}}s generally consider Michael's crying to be a VillainDecay moment. The viewpoint being that Michael crying kills the scary aura of him and the original concept of Michael being [[CompleteMonster pure evil]].
** The two bumbling cops having silly clown music play during their scenes. Yes, they have actual squeaky shoe, horns, slide whistles, and honking nose noises play as they wander around, ''literally'' making them clown cops.
** Tina, Sam, and Spitz playing with kittens in a barn. [[NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer Seriously]]. They show a ''whole'' scene of this in a ''fricking'' Michael Myers film.
** The Myers house explicitly looking like a friggin' mansion for no reason. It almost makes it appear like Loomis was so crazy, he took everyone to the wrong house.
** Loomis beating the shit out of the unconscious lump that is Michael Myers with a plank of wood while screaming "Die! Die! Die!" like Tommy Jarvis in Film/FridayThe13thTheFinalChapter... Then having a stroke and keeling over Michael's body in a pose that is oddly... suggestive.
* NarmCharm:
** It should be noted that Donald Pleasence's confused delivery of "Cookie Woman... Cookie Woman???" is the best line in the film.
** Tina and Loomis's argument over Tina going to the party is basically Donald Pleasence and Wendy Kaplan trying to outdo each other in terms of overacting and it's glorious. Tina's "I'm never sensible if i can help it TEHEHEHE" and silly run down the stairs is as absurd and hilarious as it sounds. Made even funnier by Pleasence's delivery of a very bewildered-sounding "TEA NA". Followed by a very remarkably over-the-top "IF THAT GIRL DIEES TOOOONIGHHT" directed at the bumbling cops, the entire scene is hammy line after hammy line and its made better by the fact that it's a MoodWhiplash from the genuinely heartbreaking scene where Jamie begs Tina to stay.
** [[spoiler: Tina's incredibly over the top "LEAVEE HER ALOOONE" would be funny but it's genuinely heartwarming to see that she's finally taken over the sadly deceased Rachel's role as Jamie's protector, only to become far HarsherInHindsight with her death 5 minutes later.]]
* NightmareRetardant: Michael is a little hard to find scary in this movie thanks to his mask being jokingly compared to Creator/NicolasCage. At least it's far better than the outright ridiculous mask of the previous film.
* ReplacementScrappy: Tina gets this for being the protagonist instead of [[spoiler:Rachel]], who gets killed off early on. [[spoiler: Unlike the level headed and endearing Rachel, Tina is rather obnoxious and prone to dumb choices although her heroic sacrifice to save Jamie did soften some audience members towards her]]
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: [[spoiler: For some, Tina's final actions of trying to tackle Michael so Jamie and Billy could escape and taking a knife to the chest for her trouble but saving both in the process, redeemed her for her past annoying and selfish behaviour]]
* RetroactiveRecognition: Matthew Walker, who plays one of Michael Myers' victims in this film, would around two decades later play Mikey, a second unit assistant director who works for Creator/ChristopherWalken's character Frank Kincaid in the now-defunct [[Ride/UniversalStudios Universal Studios Florida]] part-ride/part-show special effects attraction ''Ride/{{Disaster}}'' that operated from 2008 to 2015 with Mikey as the main host for the park attendees.
* TheScrappy: Spitz, Mikey, Samantha, Billy, the two comic relief cops.... Really, it's just a cast full of Scrappies. [[spoiler:[[TakeThatScrappy They all die by the end of the movie]], except for Billy (who's mercifully the least offensive of them).]]
* {{Sequelitis}}: A mild case; it still has a better reputation than ''Film/HalloweenResurrection'' and the theatrical cut of ''Film/HalloweenTheCurseOfMichaelMyers'', but is still seen as one of the weakest entries in the series for being too derivative of the fourth film (which itself had come in for some criticism for copying the first film too closely), [[DroppedABridgeOnHim dropping a bridge on]] [[spoiler:Rachel]], most of the lead characters being pretty annoying, and the GainaxEnding.
* [[SugarWiki/SheReallyCanAct She Really Can Act]]: Danielle Harris was already praised for her performance in both this and [[Film/Halloween4TheReturnOfMichaelMyers Halloween 4]]. But, many found the scene when she discovered Rachel’s lifeless body to be her most convincing and most [[{{Tearjerker}} heartbreaking]] performance in the whole series.
* SignatureScene:
** The only other reason to watch this movie besides Danielle Harris's performance is to see Loomis take Michael down. Even vocal detractors loved it. Loomis traps Michael in a net, shoots him with tranq darts, and then proceeds to wail on him with a 2x4. Only a stroke can stop him.
** Michael stabbing at Jamie through the laundry chute.
* SpecialEffectsFailure:
** Less to do with the special effects and more with the editing as throughout the film, there are random jumpcuts during scenes within the same shot like when Jamie is looking for a place to hide in the Myers house before finding the laundry chute.
** The most obvious two moments happen during death scenes which were trimmed down to avoid the X rating; When Mikey's body is twitching after getting the garden claw to the face and the officer having his face smashed into the broken driver side window.
* TakeThatScrappy: Tina, Samantha, Spitz, Mikey, and the "comedic" duo of cops are really annoying and they get killed in the end. Tina, however [[HeroicSacrifice at least sacrificed herself to save Jamie]], but still.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Many were outraged that Rachel was such a bit player in the film [[spoiler: and killed off so easily,]] as her CoolBigSister persona was considered much more preferable than her friend Tina. It doesn't help that [[CreatorBacklash even series producer Moustapha Akkad regretted doing this.]]
** For those who see Tina as fun, charismatic, and energetic, it's wasteful that [[spoiler:she's killed off before the film's end.]]
** Sheriff Ben Meeker is also terribly wasted in this film as well, with a disappointingly diminished role in comparison to his more prominent one in ''4''. Considering how both proactive he was and the fact that his own daughter was killed by Myers in the year previous, one would expect him to be out in full force alongside Loomis like before. Instead, he's barely present until the third act and his two idiotic deputies soak up his screentime. It doesn't help that [[spoiler: the ending implies he's killed alongside the other cops by the Man In Black.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** It's mentioned in the later part of the film that Michael attacked and killed SWAT officers at the clinic Jamie was originally at. This sequence was actually filmed, but was cut for unknown reasons.
** The retconned twist ending from the previous film is seen as an interesting change of course - this film could've had Jamie be the killer or even had her team up with Michael - but that is all thrown out the window here.
** The movie opens up the possibility of Jamie becoming a pariah to the citizens of Haddonfield when a brick is thrown at her hospital window with a note stating “The Evil Child MUST Die!” considering she seriously wounded her foster mother and is related to Michael Myers. That plot point is quickly dropped altogether soon after it's established.
** A lot of the problems people have with the plot seem like they could have been fixed if Tina and Rachel's roles in the film were switched, allowing the much-more annoying Tina to be killed to kick-start the plot with a bunch of new victims and allowing Rachel a HeroicSacrifice in preventing Michael from killing her sister. Even the producer and actress came to realize this, though only after the movie was already done filming.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: One of the main reasons for the film's [[{{Sequelitis}} more negative reputation amongst fans]]. Between the movie [[spoiler:killing off [[EnsembleDarkHorse Rachel, one of the more likable characters from the previous film]] [[ReplacementScrappy in favor of focusing on her more annoying best friend]] Tina]] as well as fan favorite Sheriff Meeker getting far less screentime than he did in the previous film, the inclusion of annoying, incompetent, and downright idiotic characters you’re rooting for Michael to kill, and the overall bleak feeling the film sets up like the aforementioned [[spoiler:death of Rachel and even the ''ending'' where you believe that everything is fine now that Michael is in jail, only for the Man In Black to show up, free Michael, kill ''all'' the cops, and leave Jamie all alone with her knowing it’s never going to end (and the [[Film/HalloweenTheCurseOfMichaelMyers next film]] making it [[FromBadToWorse even worse knowing she’s been kidnapped by the cult just moments later]])]], a lot of fans find it hard to root for anyone or anything in the movie.
* TooCoolToLive:
** [[spoiler: Halloween 4 established Rachel as a very likeable and competent final girl who gave Michael a real hard time and an amazing big sister. Then Halloween 5 rolls around and she dies, 20 minutes into the film in a surprise attack by the same killer she spent an entire film resourcefully dodging]]
** [[spoiler: In a film with generally incompetent cops(to the point where two of them have clown shoe sound effects), deputy Charles Bloch is a nice change of pace as he genuinely tries to protect Jamie from Michael and is outraged by Loomis's DesignatedHero tendencies. Unfortunately this being a slasher film and Bloch being a cop you can imagine how it ends for him, but he dies a very heroic but undeserved death]]
** [[spoiler: It's implied that Sheriff Meeker didn't make it out of the men in blacks attack on the station, while he doesn't have as much to do in this film as he did in Halloween 4, like with Bloch, Meeker was a nice surprise as he was a cop who was genuinely good at his job and a good person as well.]]
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: Donald Pleasance and Creator/DanielleHarris are widely considered to give great performances far above the quality of the film, to the point where they are considered the only reasons to watch it.
* WTHCostumingDepartment:
** Michael's mask in this film is one of his most widely disliked masks in the series; it has a rather blank expression, long hair and crude looking paint job. Therefore, it looks absolutely nothing like the original film's or even the previous film's mask that it's supposed to be, but that can be seen as a good thing, since 4's mask is also considered one of the worst, if not ''the'' worst mask in the series.
** The film was made on limited budget and it shows in the costuming. Despite it being Halloween, everyone is running around in RummageSaleReject costumes, even the main characters. Of particular note is Tina's, which is some sort of maid-vampire-Victorian woman...thing. Samantha's is the only decent one, complete with stockings and all sorts of nice details on the costume, which was because apparently Tina was originally supposed to be dressed in it before someone objected to the heroine dressing as a devil and they switched.
