----
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: At the end did Mothra genuinely hope to remain at peace with Battra and thus the loss of the latter was a tragedy? [[GuileHero Or, knowing Battra was still a risky wildcard, did she have Battra sacrifice himself to take care of two birds with one stone?]]
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: From 1989 to 1991, [[ExecutiveMeddling Toho execs shot down three proposed Mothra films]] thinking she was unprofitable. And then Battle For Earth released, and became the highest-grossing film of the entire Heisei Era.
* {{Anvilicious}}: Not nearly the worst offender ever, but the characters are only about ''an inch'' away from breaking into spontaneous philosophizing over how arrogant the humans are and how important it is to preserve the environment. And it's not just one or two characters... ''every'' human character, save for greedy Takeshi, seems to have a GreenAesop on their mind, even when they're having a simply friendly chat. Don't think to hard about [[BrokenAesop the fact that said environment is basically trying to kill them all with a giant moth monster and radioactive dinosaur right now...]]
* ContestedSequel: Often seen as one of the best Heisei era films by some for its enjoyable human cast, great Ifukube score and fun monster fights. Other also see it as one of the (if not ''the'') weakest of the 7 films for its [[{{Anvilicious}} heavy handed message about the environment]], for pushing Godzilla as a side character in his own movie, and for introducing the BeamOWar battles that would take over the course of the next [[Film/GodzillaVsMechagodzillaII two]] [[Film/GodzillaVsSpaceGodzilla entries]]. Then there’s those who see it as SoOkayItsAverage at best.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Battra has become quite popular among the kaiju fandom even with people who don't really like the movie. Between his impressive design, array of powers, and, as some have stated, the fact he seemingly has more personality than the other two monsters who are meant to be the main stars of the film.
* {{Narm}}: Masako's mouth hangs open when Godzilla flings Mothra off his tail.
** When the high pitched Midori dubber exclaims ''Niiice!'' in the English dub.
** Adult Mothra looking like a stuffed toy with awkwardly bent pipe-cleaners for legs and bouncy rubber claws detract somewhat from her majesty...
** It seems like the Battra larva can hardly walk.
** Yuzo gets a horrible dubber this time who mixed up distress with whiny, though Akiji Kobayashi's Japanese performance is equally tongue in cheek.
** The elderly man in the Environmental Bureau constantly delivers panicked speeches directly at the camera with increasingly over-the-top expressions.
* SignatureScene:
** Godzilla emerging from the crater of Mount Fuji as it erupts, complete with Ifukube’s classic theme playing in the background.
** The AdventurerArchaeologist sequence at the beginning is viewed as a unique sequence for the series and is one of the first things many people trying to learn more about the movie will hear about.
** The conclusion of the final showdown, where Mothra and Battra carry a beaten but still gamely fighting Godzilla out to sea [[spoiler:and he kills Battra]] is a powerful sequence of images that still warrants some talk.
* SpecialEffectsFailure: When Mothra bites Godzilla's tail, the Godzilla tail prop is obviously not sewed shut at the bottom.
* TearJerker: Combined with a rendition of "Sacred Springs", the ending scene of Mothra solemnly flying into outer space to destroy the meteor is beautifully reverent, but heart-wrenching.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Godzilla is offscreen for much of the film and has no real motivation for being involved in the plot, which revolves almost entirely around Mothra and Battra. Arguably, the only reason he’s here is to allow Battra to have a HeelFaceTurn and team with Mothra against a common enemy.
* UglyCute: As usual, Mothra is both a frightening mutant and adorably mannered and colored.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome:
** In addition to the striking Mothra and Battra models, the BeamOWar battles in this movie can be more captivating than in subsequent entries.
** Between the way her eyes glow and the beautiful colors on her wings, this version of Mothra is one of the most visually striking puppets of the character.
