* {{Fanon}}:
** Both Egon and Janine are AmbiguouslyJewish, so they're both commonly interpreted as Jewish, but not very religious.
** Egon's line "My parents didn't believe in toys" from ''Film/GhostbustersII'' has led some viewers to believe Egon's parents to have been strict (whether tough but well-meaning, or straight-up AbusiveParents) who raised Egon to be a scientist like them and thought toys distracted from this. Others interpreted them as just eccentric parents who believed Egon just didn't need toys. Fanon ideas about his mother include that she's nicer than his father (since she was a MyBelovedSmother in ''WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters'') and that her name is Katherine.
** Venkman's mother is sometimes speculated to be [[MissingMom dead]], owing to the ''Real Ghostbusters'' episode "The Thing in Mrs. Faversham's Attic", where he behaves as though she is.
** Some fans have come up with the idea that Egon [[TheTeetotaler doesn't drink]], because of the scene in the first movie where he drinks Coke while his friends drink beer. Due to his personality, some have further posited that he doesn't drink because he doesn't want alcohol to affect his logical abilities.
** Winston is often believed to have been in the military, based on the [[WhatCouldHaveBeen previous version of him]] who was an ex-marine. Some also say he fought in Vietnam.
** Some fans have speculated that Egon is either gay or aro-ace to explain his ObliviousToLove behaviour. Others think, based on him having apparently had a daughter in '83 according to ''Film/GhostbustersAfterlife'', that he doesn't want love due to a bad experience with a previous lover, while some think he ''does'' like Janine back but doesn't know how to express his feelings.
** Some fans think Ray sleeps with a Dopey Dog plush, due to him hugging one in ''The Real Ghostbusters'' episode "The Boogieman Cometh".
** Due to it being heavily implied Peter, Ray, and Egon have known each other since college, some fans believe that either Egon or Ray was Peter's roommate, and/or that Egon prevented Peter from flunking.
* FanPreferredCouple: Egon/Janine is more popular in the fanbase over Louis/Janine, mainly due to the chemistry between them in the first movie along with the [[WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters cartoon]]. Interestingly, the pairing was going to be canon in early drafts of the script, with the attraction obvious on both sides and with a WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue showing that the two went and got ''married in Vegas''.
* FirstInstallmentWins: The first film is an undisputed classic. [[ContestedSequel Fans are split about the second film.]] The cartoon and video game? Even more so. ''Film/Ghostbusters2016''? Don't even start. ''Film/GhostbustersAfterlife'' is generally well-liked though. The phrase "lightning in a bottle" is frequently used to describe the original 1984 movie, as it features a cast of seasoned comic actors in the height of their prime giving some career-highlight performances, where most sequels and adaptations hinge more on the novelty of the core "supernatural extermination service" premise rather than on the quality of the humor, to decidedly mixed results.
* FranchiseOriginalSin: One of the (admittedly many) criticisms lobbied against the 2016 reboot was how the vast majority of the male characters are portrayed as bumbling idiots for the sake of propping up the reboot's titular all-girl team. But for all the hay that is made of this detail, it would be wise to remember that, with the exception of the titular team and the mayor, the original 1984 film didn't exactly treat its own male characters all that much better. For context, Mr. Delacorte from the library is a weedy milquetoast who only exists to get scared by one of the ghosts, Dean Yeager is a prissy jackass who takes sadistic delight in getting Peter, Ray, and Egon kicked off the premises of his school, Lewis's natural charm and charisma is quite frankly the only reason he hasn't already gotten into some serious trouble, and Walter Peck is a deliberate HateSink. But this detail wasn't as big of an issue for the original film since it was a carryover from similarly styled contemporary films such as ''Film/AnimalHouse'', ''Film/{{Caddyshack}}'', and ''Film/{{Stripes}}'', among others. However, this same detail became a lot more conspicuous and difficult to ignore when the emphasis is on "girl power" as opposed to SlobsVersusSnobs. And it didn't help that, while the mayor in the original Ghostbusters film was openly supportive of the titular team, the mayor in the reboot was forced by circumstance to publicly pretend to slam the all-girl team while privately supporting them, which encouraged the bumbling attitudes in most of the other male characters.
* MemeticMutation:
** Did you know? 1981 was the year that- [[SuddenlyShouting AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!]][[labelnote:Explanation]][[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZeJVR_9R1k This video]] of Slimer saying this line has gone viral, with many using it to JumpScare their friends.[[/labelnote]]
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound:
** The proton pack start-up sound. You know the one; the one you just heard in your mind upon reading that.
** Also, the distinctive siren of Ecto-1, though more for nostalgia than the actual merits of the siren.
* NightmareRetardant: The whole premise of the franchise: there are horrific and powerful forces lurking in the shadows ready to work their evil at any time. However, they ''can'' be studied through scientific methods by learned experts, who, in turn, can develop simple and effective weapons and countermeasures that those eldritch entities will never see coming. In short, if you have the knowledge, the tools, and the courage to face those supernatural entities of your darkest nightmares, they will have very real reasons to fear ''you!''
--> "We got the tools, we got the talent!"
* SugarWiki/NoProblemWithLicensedGames:
** [[VideoGame/GhostbustersTheVideoGame The 2009 game]] was well-received by critics thanks to solid gameplay and full participation from the core four (even picky project selector Bill Murray) along with some returning supporting actors like Creator/AnniePotts and William Atherton. Dan Aykroyd himself said it may as well be the original series' canonical third film, a statement the majority of fans agree with.
** The 1990 UsefulNotes/SegaGenesis game is also regarded to be pretty decent.
** The original 1984 game released for, well, just about every computer and console available, was both popular at the time, and fondly remembered today. This is pretty amazing, considering it is essentially a ''business simulator,'' built off an incomplete original IP game, with a Ghostbusters coat of paint hastily slapped on it, and a few action levels thrown in to make it at least superficially resemble the movie. And yet somehow, it all works. Well, a lot of people think so. [[BrokenBase A lot of others don't.]] This seems to largely depend on nostalgia, which system you played it on, and how much you appreciate a good sim game. See TheProblemWithLicensedGames below.
** The 2016 ''VideoGame/LegoDimensions Ghostbusters'' Level Pack has received a warm reception, with its relatively long and enjoyable retelling of the first movie, a free-roaming world featuring locales from the first two pictures[[note]]budget-conscious ''GB'' fans can also visit this with the Slimer or Stay-Puft Fun Pack[[/note]], and the unlockable ability to play any Ghostbuster (all of whom speak through actual soundbites from the movie).
** A pinball machine based off the original movie was released by {{Creator/Stern}} in 2016, and is expected to arrive on the [[VideoGame/ThePinballArcade Stern Pinball Arcade]] as part of the partnership with Farsight and Stern.
** Of the two NES adaptations of the second film, ''New Ghostbusters II'' is by far the better of the two. Allowing the player to chose two Ghostbusters (including adding Louis as a playable character), it actually follows the film's plot fairly closely and is quite fun to boot.
* OneSceneWonder: Mr. Stay Puft has about three minutes of screentime at the very end of the first film, but is probably second only to Slimer as the face of the franchise. Nearly ''every'' spin-off, from the 80's cartoon to the 1990 and 2009 video games to the 2016 film, has featured Stay Puft in some way, shape, or form.
* PeripheryDemographic: When Ramis and Aykroyd wrote the first film, they obviously intended it to be for an adult audience like ''Film/{{Caddyshack}}'' and ''Film/{{Stripes}}''. However, when the film became a smash hit, everyone noticed that kids were going nuts for it. After all, it is the ultimate NightmareRetardant story about ScienceHero characters facing the scary supernatural threats, and shooting them with AwesomeBackpack weapons. From that realization came the long running ''WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters'' cartoon series, a slightly softened sequel with less innuendo, swearing, and casual smoking (though Ray can still be seen chewing on or holding unlit pipes and cigars, never a cigarette), and culminating in ''Afterlife'' outright passing the mantle to a team of kid Ghostbusters.
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: With a few exceptions, the games based on the series haven't fared too well. In particular, [[VideoGame/{{Ghostbusters 1984}} the 1984 game]] by Creator/{{Activision}} based on the first film tends to be regarded as interesting in concept and scope, but extremely tedious in execution (and the NES port of that game was [[PortingDisaster flat-out horrible]]).
* TearJerker: When Harold Ramis passed away, TheCharacterDiedWithHim. Originally fanon, it was confirmed to be the case with ''Film/GhostbustersAfterlife'', where Egon's death and mysterious circumstances around it forms the heart of the story.
