Go To

* AdaptationDisplacement: Yes, ''Felidae'' was based on a book. Also, there are actually eight books (the first one being the one made into a film). However, only the first two (and more recently, the fifth) have been translated into English.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Claudandus. Even if he acknowledges during his FinalSpeech that he is evil, there is no clear indication whether he [[HeelRealization regrets being evil]] or [[IDidWhatIHadToDo not]]; in fact, the only thing that is clearly stated is that he's a KnightTemplar.
* AluminumChristmasTrees:
** Selectively breeding domestic creatures to create something similar to their wild ancestors is a real practice called breeding-back. Its scope, however, is somewhat limited - Tamaskan dogs, for example, bear about as strong a resemblance to wolves as can be gained without actually introducing wolves into the breeding program, yet behaviorally and temperamentally they are still more like dogs than wolves (which is exactly what Tamaskan breeders want anyway, so it works out).
** Recreating a wildcat type would likely be incredibly easy, as domestic cats are closer in both behavior and appearance to their ancestors than dogs are, and a cat who has had little to no human contact will tend to act quite wild anyway. There are even arguments that cats are not truly domesticated, and should instead be considered semi-domestic wild animals.
* AudienceAlienatingPremise: ''Felidae'' is a FilmNoir with blood, gore, murder, sex, and a cult. Starring cats. Its look made many people think it was a Disney-type movie, but the actual content is not kid-friendly, scaring away both kid and adult audiences. The film has since gained a cult status online, however.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRvTnQRcQw4 The entire soundtrack.]]''
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: The sex scene between Francis and Nhozemptekh is one of the most remembered scenes of the film. However, considering that it's presenting realistic mating behavior for cats, complete with biting and yowling, and that it's in a cartoonish animated film, it may be viewed as FanDisservice for being so jarring.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The sex scene, which comes literally out of nowhere, with a character we'd ''never seen before'', and thoroughly distracts the protagonist from his hunt for the killer. [[spoiler:Her breed - which he does not recognize - does get him thinking about the case eventually, though, and ultimately points him toward the real killer.]] To be fair, it is pretty realistic behavior for cats.
%%* [[CrossesTheLineTwice Crosses The Line More Than Twice]]
* CrossoverShip: Shipping Francis from Duchess of ''WesternAnimation/TheAristocats'' is a thing.
* CultClassic: The film has gained a lot of fans online over the years, especially for people interested in {{xenofiction}} with more mature themes and content, and/or adult-oriented animation that ''isn't'' in the comedy genre. The books have gained a minor cult following too, though to a leser extent as they're even more obscure than the film, plus most of them haven't received foreign translations.
* DiagnosedByTheAudience: According to Francis, his owner is mentally defective, but it's unclear exactly how true that is.
* EnsembleDarkHorse: Felicity [[spoiler: only appeared for a few minutes before she got decapitated and yet]] has a good fanbase (see {{Shipping}} below).
%%* FanPreferredCouple: Francis/Felicity.
* FirstInstallmentWins: Even without having the (in?)famous movie attached to it, most fans of the books agree that the first is the best.
* FriendlyFandoms: ''Felidae'', ''Literature/ThePlagueDogs'', and ''WesternAnimation/WatershipDown'' are commonly grouped together due to being violent films about animals.
* HarsherInHindsight: The series' FantasticRacism and Nazi overtones can be a little unbearable, after seeing author Akif Pirinçci's turn towards far-right politics and his controversial statements denigrating LGBTQ+ people and immigrants. It's almost as if [[BecameTheirOwnAntithesis he outright took after Claudandus]] in such a regard.
** Joker allowing himself to be killed. His actor, Ulrich Wildgruber, committed suicide.
* HoYay:
** More evident in the books, but the friendship between [[MayDecemberRomance Francis and Pascal]] might come off as this to some.
** Kong and Francis can give off this vibe, at least in the English movie dub. Kong even calls Francis "cutie pie". He also disparages Francis and implies he's Bluebeard's gay lover.
** This is probably perfectly intentional. Cats ''aren't'' picky in mating season and homosexual behavior among them is a pretty well documented phenomenon.
** Francis's narration directly denies this trope (and indeed, he is even shown to be homophobic) in ''Salve Roma!,'' which has a confirmed homosexual character, Antonio. Still, despite his discomfort with this particular trait, Francis is still able to be friends with Antonio. The whole scene is simultaneously hilarious and heartwarming.
%%* MisaimedFandom: Claudandus does have some fans on the web.
* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:If Claudandus hadn't crossed the line with Felicity's murder, then he did so with Solitaire, who was pregnant at the time. It all becomes moot as shortly after, we find out that the murders have been going on for years and many victims were young or pregnant, thus crossing the line much earlier than we had expected.]]
%%* {{Narm}}: Some people view the English dub as this.
* NauseaFuel: Plenty of it, especially when it comes to things like [[spoiler:the tragic and violent deaths of [[OffWithHerHead Felicity]] and [[TraumaticCSection Solitaire]] -- the latter of whom was also ''pregnant'' -- the [[NightmareSequence dream sequence]] involving a sea of rotting undead cat marionettes, the ElectricTorture in the Cult scene, and Claudandus himself being [[GuttedLikeAFish gruesomely disembowelled on-screen]] in his final battle with Francis]]. [[SincerityMode This movie is]] '''[[SincerityMode absolutely not]]''' [[SincerityMode for the faint of heart]].
* PopularWithFurries: The film tends to creep out non-furries and non-{{xenofiction}} fans as they're not used to cute cats being so violent. Furries and fans of other cat works, like ''Literature/WarriorCats'', however aren't fazed as easily. ''Felidae'' is thus a pretty popular cat animated film.
* TheScrappy: Nhozemptekh is unpopular with fans, and is especially loathed by Francis/Felicity shippers. This is on the basis of her [[FlatCharacter near-total lack of characterization]] beyond simply being "that cat who has lots of sex with Francis", and her being considered [[ReplacementGoldfish there for the sole purpose of casting aside someone]] who was seen as [[TheWoobie a lot more likeable, sympathetic]], and generally more deserving of his affection.
* {{Shipping}}:
** The most popular pairing in the fandom seems to be Francis/Felicity even though [[spoiler:Felicity is decapitated only minutes after she is introduced in the film]] and [[spoiler:Francis' mate ends up being Nhozemptekh AKA "The cat who had sex with him in the movie."]] That's because of [[TheWoobie what]] Felicity [[WideEyedIdealist is]]. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, she's also a SacrificialLamb who is TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth.]] Funny enough, Nhozemptekh is barely even ''mentioned'' in the second book. She is mentioned, albeit extremely briefly, towards the very end of the book. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Francis comments on [[spoiler: all the sex he's had with her.]]
** Francis's ship for the second book is Alcina, a wildcat. [[spoiler:She is murdered partway through the book, leaving Francis rather devastated.]]
** He doesn't even have time to mate with his lover for the third book (Roxy) as she is [[spoiler: murdered before the book even starts]] being his motivation to even take the case.
** In the fourth book, his eyes are on a female by the name of Fabulous which he has plans to make moves on once spring starts. It's juts to bad that she [[spoiler: is partly in league with the bad guy of the story and end up committing suicide at the end]]. The guy just can't catch a break when it comes to women can he?
* SignatureScene: ''WesternAnimation/{{Felidae}}'' is largely known only for the very explicit and realistic sex scene between two [[SlidingScaleOfAnthropomorphism minimally anthropomorphic]] ''cartoon cats.'' To a lesser extent, it's known for its most gory scenes, such as the one with the disemboweled pregnant cat.
** Another famous moment is the [[spoiler: second nightmare which features [[ItMakesSenseInContext a giant Gregor Mendel swinging around a bunch of dead cats]].]]
** To a lesser extent, the [[{{Gorn}} Deep]] [[BodyHorror Purple]] [[{{Squick}} nightmare]] from the book.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Yeah, [[BreadEggsMilkSquick it's an animated movie about kitties... and gruesome murder! And surrealistic, disturbing nightmares!]] There's also cats fucking like rabbits. Or rather, like cats, which is to say, [[TheImmodestOrgasm loudly and violently]]. There's even a cult that holds ''suicide pacts''. [[DeadpanSnarker Francis]] even {{lampshades}} this- "What I was watching wasn't exactly a scene out of ''WesternAnimation/TheAristocats''."
** And even then the movie cut out was what arguably the most gory and disturbing scene from the book, his second nightmare involving Deep Purple.[[labelnote:NSFL warning]] which involved the dead cat repeatedly plucking kittens from his neck wound and throwing them against the wall untill it was completely covered in guts and blood.[[/labelnote]]
* TheWoobie:
** Felicity.
** [[spoiler: The lynx]] from the second book. He was [[spoiler:brought to Germany from Canada with a group of other lynxes to repopulate the wild. However, since the Canadian lynx's primary food source, the snowshoe hare, was no longer available to them, some members of the group starved to death. A few others were shot by farmers after they attacked livestock in desperation, and the remaining lynxes eventually scattered.]] He's now alone, and will probably remain so for the rest of his life.
** [[IronWoobie Francis]]. Moreso in the books, wherein the things he sees and goes through have a much more obvious effect on him - more than once he breaks down crying. (Can you really blame him?)
** Isaiah. He's an old cat on the verge of losing his sanity, believing himself to be Guardian of the Dead, and is utterly crushed when he feels that The Prophet ([[spoiler:who is actually Pascal/Claudandus]]) has abandoned him. [[spoiler:However, at the end of the novel, he is finally persuaded by Francis and Bluebeard to step into the light and is adopted by a bartender.]]
