* MemeticMutation: "De plane! De plane!" and "Smiles, everyone, smiles!" from the beginning of every episode in the 1978 version. However, both were subjected to DiscreditedMeme in the 1998 remake, when one of his employees shouts about a plane's arrival, Roarke tells them to never shout about the plane's arrival again, and is quite irritated that he has to keep reminding everyone to smile while greeting the guests.
* FridgeHorror: Someone must have realized that the idea of a mysterious man who brings people to a secluded island to let them play out their fantasies only to twist them in an unexpected way would make a good horror movie, which is probably why Film/FantasyIsland2020 exists. However, the 1998 version actually was the first to note this, but balanced this a bit in between the more lighthearted tales, as there was an ongoing storyline that something was forcing the staff to do their duties on the island and trusting Roarke to oversee things with it implying he's much older then his looks let on. He has total control of the island as shown in one episode where Cal and Harry try to leave the island via a boat Cal managed to fix. Not only do they not get far, but Roarke is very aware of their escape attempt and we see that he trapped them in his aquarium the entire time.

* AudienceAlienatingEra: Creator/HerveVillechaize was a pain during the series' production, but firing him and thus losing his character spelled the series' doom.
* CompleteMonster:
** "The Victim": Michael Duvall is a charming, handsome man who owns his own property near Fantasy Island. In truth, Michael is a ruthless sex slaver who lures in beautiful women and imprisons them, subjecting them to starvation and beatings if they resist. When the young protagonist of the episode, Julie has her fantasy to meet Michael again, she finds herself trapped and introduced to the other women Michael uses to service his wealthy clientele, with Michael intending on imprisoning them as forced prostitutes for the remainder of their lives.
** "With Affection, Jack the Ripper": UsefulNotes/JackTheRipper himself, true identity Dr. Albert Z. Fell, is a sadistic misogynist who runs rampant through VictorianLondon, killing five innocent prostitutes for no greater reason than his disgust at them. When criminologist Lorraine Peters tries to learn his identity, Fell follows her back to Fantasy Island and attempts to murder the women at the resort before assaulting Lorraine and trying to drag her through to his time where he can make her the Ripper's sixth victim before traveling back and forth between time periods to visit his monstrous judgement on others.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Quite a few.
** Usually, it was wonderful when a guest realizes his selfish ways and how his family is more important to him.
** A guest realizing they actually enjoy living this fantasy life and become a "permanent resident", often to be with a love.
** One episode has Tattoo scheming with a business that charges to give anyone a [=PhD=] (even a monkey). When Roarke finds Tattoo hasn't returned the money, he's upset until Tattoo says he "spent it on something better." Cue the island staff coming out with presents and a cake in a surprise birthday party for Roarke who gives Tattoo a warm "thank you, my friend."
* NightmareFuel: Several of the "dreams" were, well, unsettling.
** One episode literally so, as a guest wants to experience a recurring nightmare all the way through to the end which she previously always missed when scared awake.
* ReplacementScrappy: In the final season they replaced the famous Tattoo with the forgettable Lawrence.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** Lawrence, the butler who appeared in the last season, is probably best known as Series/MrBelvedere.
** Creator/MichellePfeiffer has her first role in "The Island of Lost Women."
** Julie, the assistant, was portrayed by Wendy Schaal, the voice of Francine Smith.
* TheUntwist:
** After the third or fourth time it was used (which is to say, early in the first season), the discovery that a fantasy love interest was actually another customer with a similar fantasy (who had presumably arrived on the island via a different means from de plane) grew to be expected.
** In sports fantasies, a guest will be given a magical piece of sporting equipment - a magic riding crop, magic ice skates, etc. - but is told at the end after he won the Big Game/Big Race that the items were ordinary and 'all the talent was in you when you started to believe in yourself'.

* GrowingTheBeard: Despite a wonky start, the series was actually starting to pick up a bit on it's ongoing storylines and character development and interaction with the leads. Alas, it was too little, too late as ABC canned the show by then.
* HeartwarmingInHindsight: In the pilot, one of the guests is a daredevil wannabe looking for the ultimate extreme act. Through the course of his adventure, we learn he's resisting settling down in a family setting, which he considers boring and mundane. Roarke talks to him about how being a family man can be extreme in its own way and admits there are times he thinks about having that kind of life. "Let's Go" reveals that he previously adopted a baby orphaned during a shipwreck and had many good years raising her. She inevitably left to lead a normal life on the mainland and had her memories erased, but after their reunion in the episode proper, Roarke makes it clear he will arrange for future visits for her, her husband, and their future children.
* HilariousInHindsight: "Let's Go" addresses the possibility of Roarke's adopted daughter staying on the island and seeing what his job is really like. In 2021, Roarke's grandniece is running things.
* NightmareFuel: As stated above, this series did have a slight sinister overtone in pertaining exactly what the island was. Plus with Malcom Mcdowell cast as Roarke there was a much more otherworldly edge to this version of the character. It's only offset is that he's not deliberately malicious and trying to teach the guest valuable life lessons that the were missing. But not afraid to show them some ToughLove to get his point across.
* SpecialEffectFailure: Mostly in the starting episodes with a lot of obvious green screen shots and CGI use. Later episodes did get better though with more practical effects.
