1* AssPull: To say that the reveal that the second evil group in the game is [[spoiler:a group of AI's whose representative is able to manifest himself in the physical world and shoot lasers]] comes out of nowhere is an understatement.
2* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The game features an original score by Angelo Badalamenti, who scored the majority of Creator/DavidLynch's films. Not to mention, an impressive roster of cult classic funk/pop/jazz records.

4** Also all the songs by Music/TheoryOfADeadman.
5* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Lucas hallucinating giant bright green dust mites at his workplace comes out of nowhere even by this game's standards, and seems mostly to be there just to have an action sequence. The hallucinations only come back for one more scene when he returns to work, but they become irrelevant since their related quick time events can [[GuideDangIt (and should be)]] ignored without consequence.
6** Tyler and Jeffrey's basketball game. The entire game turns into a lighthearted sports romp with no mention or advancement of the murder case, [[ExposedToTheElements while the two characters are only wearing basketball jerseys and shorts in the freezing weather.]] To make matters worse, Jeffrey is PutOnABus for the rest of the plot, making the outcome of this scene especially irrelevant.
7* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:The AI]] is the malevolent representative of the Purple Clan that wants the Indigo Child to gain unlimited power, plunge the world into an endless winter and [[KillAllHumans exterminate humanity]]. Manipulating [[PlayerCharacter Lucas Kane]] by [[spoiler:killing his ally Agatha and taking her form, the AI [[TreacherousAdvisor guides and protects Lucas]], even reviving him as a living corpse when he is killed by the Oracle]]. Once Lucas is [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness no longer useful]], [[spoiler:the AI]] attempts to destroy him even if the player gives the Indigo Child over. Arrogant and cruel, [[spoiler:the AI]] has the most devastating and apocalyptic plan in the game.
8* DelusionConclusion: Though the supernatural elements are meant to be taken at face value, the hasty development period behind the game has resulted in these aspects being hurried into the story with little foreshadowing or explanation, and the narrative gradually becomes more and more incoherent. Plus, David Cage has a very strange approach to writing characters and dialogue. As a result, players including LetsPlay/GeekRemix and WebVideo/TwoBestFriendsPlay regard Lucas as a [[MemeticPsychopath schizophrenic serial-killing]] [[MemeticMolester pedophile]] hallucinating the events of the game.
9* DisappointingLastLevel: A story, rather than gameplay-based example. The last third of the game's plot is infamous for being ''weird'' at best and incoherent at worst. There's a reason why [[WebAnimation/ZeroPunctuation Yahtzee]] calls this phenomenon "Indigo Prophecy syndrome".
10* EnjoyTheStorySkipTheGame: Chances are, if someone likes this game, it's not because of the gameplay. Mostly because it barely even has gameplay, and what little it does have actually holds the experience back. A large amount of the game (Lucas' chapters especially) are action sequences (aka QuickTimeEvents), with entire chapters consisting of nothing but Qte's, sometimes back-to-back. And unfortunately, the constant and exhausting action sequences aren't even broken up by any other kind of meaningful gameplay. Most other chapters put you in a completely linear level with nothing to do but talk with someone and/or find the next clue. And even if they have extra things for you to interact with, it's probably just a minor increase to your mental health meter, which isn't even that big a deal anyway.
11* FridgeBrilliance: If you had just broken up from a long-term relationship and had nothing but milk in the fridge and duck soup in the cupboards, wouldn't YOU want to eat out as much as possible, too? Seems like the perfect setup for Lucas being in the diner, when you think about it.
12* FridgeLogic:
13** [[spoiler:After Lucas is revived, his model is re-textured with a paler skin--you know, like a corpse--his breath doesn't fog anymore, and Carla mentions how cold his skin is. So apparently he's lost all body warmth, which suggests they just didn't bother getting his circulatory system back up to standard. Apparently, though, this doesn't affect his ability to knock her up. Completely aside from the InsaneTrollLogic of fixing a man's junk but not his heart, how does he get an erection without effective blood flow?]]
14** Tyler and Dennis playing basketball in freezing temperatures without even shivering, when at all other times they are wrapped in fleecy coats etc. Even more confusing is the fact that the court is swept of snow when all the rest of the area is a foot or so deep in the stuff.
15** Related to the above: The game shows the date, time and current temperature whenever a new scene occurs. These can get somewhat outlandish at times, with one endgame sequence apparently occurring with an outside ambient temperature of ''negative 77 degrees Fahrenheit'' (later ports of the game use °F instead of the °C of the original). While it's possible for the human body to survive in these temperatures, doing so for prolonged periods requires much heavier clothing than that worn by the characters in the scene -- unless one {{hand|Wave}}waves it with, "[[AWizardDidIt It's chroma magic]], I ain't gotta explain it."
16** Tyler's basketball match chronologically takes place concurrently with Lucas visiting Agatha for the first time -- however, the basketball court is overcast but still bright, but Agatha's neighbourhood is dark.
17** Bellevue Asylum's door system for some reason ''opens'' all of the doors when the power fails. Despite Carla's gameplay there essentially showing us that all of the inmates in there could lash out and hurt someone at the first opportunity, for some reason the doors ''open'' during power outages instead of ''staying shut'' in case someone is in the patient area when the power fails.
18* {{Narm}}: In the right mindset, the last third of the game is ''absolutely hilarious''.
19** If you watch the bonus clip [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjJHfjFa1CI "The Hidden Dancefloor"]], it becomes impossible to take the game seriously from then on.
20** The apartment [=QTE=] sequence. It already sounds absurd enough, but watching Lucas' entire apartment attack him by throwing ''every'' single piece of furniture in the room his way for four minutes is something else entirely. The fact that this is all meant to be taken seriously and happens immediately after Lucas returns to his apartment and picks up a ringing phone makes this almost feel like a BigLippedAlligatorMoment.
21* NightmareFuel: Lucas being chased by [[spoiler:freakishly large, [[RedEyesTakeWarning red-eyed]] Jaguars in a dense jungle while haunting [[OminousLatinChanting Gregorian choirs]] swell in the background]]. If that doesn't unsettle you even a little, you must be MadeOfIron.
22* PortingDisaster: In a possible case of LyingCreator, the Platform/PlayStation4 rerelease of this game was advertised as both the recent Remastered Edition ''and'' as a [=PS2=]-On-[=PS4=] release, with Quantic Dream ensuring fans that it would be the uncut version of the game. When it actually released in the Playstation Store, however, it turned out to just be the existing, edited [=PS2=] version, upscaled and with trophy support, and it brings with it all the problems it had back on [=PS2=] as well as GUI elements improperly stretched for widescreen.
23* TheScrappy: Sam gets a ''lot'' of dislike for constantly pressuring Tyler to leave the force despite his general happiness with it, constantly whining at him whenever he has to do his job, and [[spoiler:for the fact that she gives him an ultimatum at the end of the story, which either sees Tyler PutOnABus or left with the "wrecked" mental state, depending on whether or not Tyler leaves with her.]]
24* ScrappyMechanic: The "[[PressXToNotDie physical challenges]]", especially the ones involving Lucas, aren't especially difficult, but they go on for much, ''much'' longer than they need to, to the point where the player will usually get tired of one of them before it's even halfway over.
25** Tying into this, you need to pick-up extra lives to have a second chance at [=QTEs=] that kill your character if failed, however there's ''less than 10'' lives to collect in the entire game, meaning you only have a small amount of second chances before you're stuck having to replay every [=QTE=] sequence in it's entirety if you failed, better get good at the [=QTEs=] fast so you can have a stockpile for the late-game.
26* SignatureScene: The game's opening in the diner bathroom. You're thrown right into the action without any exposition: an ordinary guy has been possessed by otherworldly forces and forced to commit a shocking act of violence. It's exciting and mysterious in a way that perfectly sets the stage for a crime thriller with spooky supernatural overtones. The player feels motivated to find out what's going on in Lucas' head and where his journey will take him.
27* SpecialEffectFailure: After the murder in the restaurant, rushing out of the bathroom without cleaning yourself off will have Lucas bump into the waitress while she's serving another customer, alarming her and attracting the attention of the officer closeby. The effect failure comes in if the player rushes out of the bathroom while the officer is already on his way there [[DevelopersForesight (but not when he's too close to the door)]]. Despite the waitress clearly not being visible on the camera following the officer, she will magically teleport next to the door so Lucas can bump into her.
28* {{Squick}}: Right before the final [=QTE=] sequence in the game, [[spoiler:Lucas and Tyler have sex together in a boxcar. On its own, not too bad. However, Lucas was established at that point to be ''a walking corpse'' thanks to the Purple Clan, turning this intimate sequence into '''zombie sex.''' Which results in a '''pregnancy''']].
29* StrangledByTheRedString: [[spoiler:Lucas and Carla. Carla finally meets the fugitive she has been chasing, falls in love with him on the spot, despite his undead status rendering him a weird, pale man with no body temperature, and then they have sex.]]
30* ThatOneLevel: Either of the two stealth based missions in this game.

32** The second one in particular is annoying, not only are the guard's vision cones on the map screen an outright lie, progression in several points requires moving ''infront'' of them to trigger scripted sequences, [[ViolationOfCommonSense you are essentially expected to walk into enemy vision cones, which you would normally focus on avoiding, to trigger scripted sequences.]]
33** "The Storm" is [[MarathonLevel one of the longest sequences in the entire game]], with only one checkpoint after the entire QTE sequence. Prepare to lose a lot of lives (or to restart from the beginning without them), largely due to the sheer monotony and how unforgiving the shorter dodge sequences can be.
34* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
35** In the final third of the game, the player has the option to save Lucas' brother Marcus [[spoiler:from The Oracle]] and prevent Tyler from leaving with his girlfriend to Florida, ending their relationship and leaving him at an emotional low. The only impacts this leaves on the overall story is [[spoiler:Markus appearing in the underground subway and having a small chat with Lucas and Carla, and Tyler not showing up at any point after his decision]]. Instead of making these choices feel pointless, what if the game's finale [[spoiler:had Tyler and Markus come with Lucas and Carla to the old base where they try to get the Indigo Child to the altar. During the final boss fights with both the Orange Clan and the Purple Clan, the two characters presence would end up helping out Lucas as he partakes in the battle, as they make some QTE sections easier with their intervention/help and would also have their own segments (such as Markus finding a weapon and attacking some Purple Clan members trying to kill his brother and Tyler taking out a few cult members himself before fleeing a collapsing portion of the base), helping the finale feel more climactic. And depending on what ending the player got, the two characters could also have different endings similar to Lucas, Carla and the world (like if Tyler decided not to go to Florida with Samantha but Lucas was the one to deliver the Indigo Child to the alter, Samantha would come back and some dialogue would hint that she would potentially get back together with Tyler while trying to be more supportive of his own choices, just to name one example).]]
36** The game introduces a shooting mechanic for Carla, it is used exactly once for a shooting range and never again.
37* VillainDecay: Some people were unable to take [[spoiler:the Oracle]] seriously after seeing them wearing [[spoiler:his [[FashionVictimVillain ridiculous Mayan priest outfit]]]].
