* AlternateAesopInterpretation: The film could be interpreted as a parable on the importance of couples' therapy, and how relationships can become dysfunctional even if both parties love each other. [[spoiler: Joel and Clementine don't appear to even have a conversation about their issues with the other person until they overhear their tapes]]. As we see in the reverse order, the relationship started out somewhat healthy and deteriorated because of poor communication between them.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** Did Stan really not know about [[spoiler: Mary and her interest in Howard]]? He just says he noticed one moment but never again, so it's unclear if he genuinely thought it was his imagination or he was just in denial.
** How are Joel and Clementine going to cope with [[spoiler: finding the truth out? The original script had a rather cynical ending where an older Clementine would go back to Lacuna intending to erase him - and being told that they have continued to do it over the years. That seems to suggest the two of them will learn nothing from their destructive relationship. However it's shown that Joel does his best to try and keep his memories from being erased when the procedure's actually happening. So perhaps they will give things another try and work on their relationship. Or simply they could decide that the whole ordeal isn't worth it and stay broken up]].
** While Clementine does have a lot of issues (notably being very impulsive), one has to wonder if Joel is overstating her bad qualities. The break-up is triggered by him saying she fucks people to get them to like her - which she herself later claims is false [[spoiler: when they discover their memories have been erased]]. Perhaps the unhealthy part of the relationship isn't necessarily Clementine's wackiness, but Joel being too judgemental of her. He seems to look down on her, especially when he scoffs at the fact that she might want a baby. Notably when we're shown how they first met, Clementine in fact ''refused'' to be the other woman, saying that Joel had to split up with Naomi if he wanted to be with her.
** Deleted scenes throw Howard's character into a whole new light. [[spoiler: In the extended version of his subplot with Mary, he pressured her into having an abortion. This changes things from a mere workplace obsession on Mary's part to a full blown affair - Howard looking like he essentially {{Mind Rape}}d her just to cover up his own mistakes]].
* AwardSnub:
** Creator/JimCarrey [[Film/TheTrumanShow once]] [[Film/ManOnTheMoon again]] did not get an UsefulNotes/AcademyAward nomination for Best Actor. This case was particularly insulting for fans because Creator/KateWinslet was nominated for Best Actress, yet his role is of equal importance, carrying the implication that voters didn't consider Carrey a '''real''' actor like Winslet because he is primarily associated with broad comedies.
** Also failed to get nominations for Best Picture or Best Director for Creator/MichelGondry (though the latter would share a screenplay win with Creator/CharlieKaufman).
** Although Creator/KateWinslet would eventually win for ''Film/TheReader'', many still feel that this is the film she should have been recognised for. She was nominated but the only award she won for her performance was an Empire Award.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** Music/{{Beck|Musician}}'s cover of "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime", which plays over the ending as Joel and Clem chase each other in the snow.
** Music/ThePolyphonicSpree's "Light And Day/Reach For the Sun," which has an UncannyValley-heavy music video on the DVD, and is featured in many supplementary documentaries and trailers.
* FanficFuel: It's become a source of fun for fans to guess how Lacuna's process would work in TheNewTens with social media and smartphones to contend with.
* FanPreferredCutContent: While many of the deleted scenes have their defenders, almost everyone thinks that the scene where [[spoiler:Mary listens to the recordings of her erased memories and finds out that Howard pressured her to have an abortion]] should have stayed. It has some of the character's best acting and makes her actions at the end of the movie a lot more understandable.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Mary's smoking pot and getting drunk in Joel's apartment is PlayedForLaughs. Not so much when Creator/KirstenDunst had to check herself into rehab for substance abuse and depression.
** In 2015, Creator/JimCarrey's former girlfriend Cathriona White committed suicide with a drug overdose that included propranolol, a memory altering substance which several doctors have specifically likened to the procedure in the film. And a year later, her husband accused Carrey of providing the drugs himself.
* HilariousInHindsight: Creator/KateWinslet tries to erase her memories but [[spoiler: she ends up remembering after all]]. Maybe Clementine is a {{Literature/Divergent}}.
* JerkassWoobie: Both the lovers in their own special ways:
** Clementine is flaky, impulsive and would probably get very annoying after a while. But the poor girl has had self esteem issues her whole life and struggled with body image in her youth.
** Joel is very judgemental and slightly misogynistic, but he's also deeply lonely and it's implied he was bullied as a child and ignored by his mother.
* MisaimedFandom: Way too many audience members claim that Clementine is a ManicPixieDreamGirl played straight, citing her [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} quirky behavior]] in her introductory scene and [[DyeHard dyed hair]] as evidence. Anyone who'd actually paid attention to the movie would realize that Clementine is [[DeconstructedCharacterArchetype a middle finger to the whole idea]] of Manic Pixie Dream Girls considering her impulsiveness led to their breakup and memory erasures in the first place along with the fact [[spoiler: her unusual behavior in the opening scene is because she's vaguely remembering him]], something that only becomes obvious once you've [[TheEndingChangesEverything finished]] and/or [[RewatchBonus rewatched]] the movie. This quote from her alone shows she's an ultimate subversion of the trope:
-->Too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive. But I'm just a fucked-up girl who's lookin' for my own peace of mind; don't assign me yours.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** "I kind of stole a pair of her panties, is what."
** From the deleted scenes, [[spoiler:Howard pressuring Mary into getting an abortion during their affair]] explains why [[spoiler:his wife]]'s reaction to [[spoiler:the resurgence of Mary's affections after the wipe]] was "Don't be a monster. [[spoiler:Tell the girl]]."
* {{Narm}}: When Clem has her freakout [[ChewingTheScenery it gets pretty damn hammy]]:
-->'''Clem''': GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!\
'''Patrick''': ({{beat}}) Can we talk about it?\
'''Clem''': NO! GET THE FUCK AWAY!
* NightmareFuel:
** Some of the mental images are disturbing - like the guy who literally has no front in Joel's memories, or the instance where [[spoiler: Joel temporarily retreats into an "erased" memory]]. Not to mention scenes where reality apparently decays around Joel as the memory is erased.
** Hell, just the idea that an essential part of your memories can be erased in your sleep. And you [[AndIMustScream get to watch it happen]].
* OneSceneWonder: A lot of viewers remember the woman in the waiting room at Lacuna who appears to be about to erase the memory of her dog Buster.
* ParanoiaFuel:
** Patrick's behaviour causes some. When getting the procedure done, you invite these Lacuna technicians into your house for the evening and you're unconscious the whole time. They could do absolutely anything or take anything. And if something goes missing from your belongings, you won't know because in your mind they were never here.
** You might ''think'' you'd never take advantage of Lacuna's services...but as long as the company exists, you can never be sure that you haven't done so ''already.''
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Throughout the movie, greatly adds to the surreal, dream-like depiction of memories. Perhaps most notably, in a blink and you'll miss it moment during the memory of Joel and Clementine's final fight, Clementine is storming off ''on one leg''.
* TheWoobie: Mary once her backstory is revealed. [[spoiler: She had her memories erased of an affair with Howard, and it's implied he pressured her into it. According to the deleted scenes, she got pregnant with his baby and was severely pressured to abort it]].
