* AlasPoorScrappy:
** Although fans were cheering when the tram crashed down on Molly Dobbs, the scenes afterwards with her and Baby Jack in the rubble were very sad. The baby survived anyway.
** Non-fatal examples. Teresa and Natasha weren't well-liked but their exits were well received. Teresa realised that Lloyd was growing closer to Cheryl and opted to leave herself, realising their relationship would come to nothing. Her final scene has her waiting for Lloyd to leave before tearfully calling her son Daryl - implying she's going to patch things up with her family. Natasha meanwhile decided to walk around giving numerous people a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech - saving Gail Platt for last. She busts Gail for hacking into her medical records, getting her fired from her job. Her line "Back of the net!" was a couple years too early for MemeticMutation status though.
** Although Sinead was never the most popular character (though she was far more palatable than her aunt Beth), it is impossible not to feel sorry for her when [[spoiler: during her second pregnancy, she finds she has cancer, and for her to survive, she needs to both terminate her pregnancy, and her hysterectomy would cause her to never be able to have a baby again. Sinead refuses treatment, instead choosing to sacrifice her life for her child's. Once Bertie is born, her cancer rapidly worsens and becomes terminal. More fans than ever warmed to her seflessness and sweet nature despite what she was going through.]]
** [[spoiler: Robert had received a fairly large Hatedom due to being both dull, and pretty sleazy with his treatment of Michelle and Vicky (not that they were angels themselves, but his death scene, especially after he and Michelle had reached an understanding, was nonetheless sad.]]
* AmericansHateTingle: Despite its popularity in Canada (see below), the show is fairly obscure in America as aside from viewers in northern states who could receive a nearby CBC station, no American channel ever really aired the show for any length of time. It aired briefly on Creator/{{PBS}} in the early 70s, the Creator/USANetwork aired it for a short time in the early 80s (when they were desperate for programming), and the part-CBC owned cable net Trio aired it at some point before the CBC sold it to -- ironically -- USA Networks. It's only really been exposed in the States via Creator/{{Hulu}}.
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: Famously the Chairman of Granada felt that the first scripts weren’t good and Producer Harry Elton had to convince him to create the Test Pilot[[note]] Elton reminded him that Granada had to represent the North, they had Tony Warren a local person writing them and they could be done cheaply with local actors[[/note]], then the Programme Committee of Granada Television felt the show was a negative joke of the North and that it wouldn't work however Elton had the recording screened for staff of the studio and they filled in Questionnaires of what they liked, then with this only about 13 episodes were planned, there would be a second Test Pilot done then finally it aired on 9th December 1960, Critics still disliked it but the viewers loved it and it's passed the 13 episodes by a bit more now.
* AngstWhatAngst: You can't help but notice how eerily well Peter Barlow took to two wives suffering ''[[ConvenientMiscarriage two miscarriages]]'' between them. While each woman dealt with the devastation in their own way, he, on the other hand, took it all in stride and sadly cemented his JerkAss persona.
* ArcFatigue:
** The [[DomesticAbuse domestic abuse]] storyline. A full year after it started, it appeared to have reached its conclusion - only for Kirsty to find out Tyrone was planning to leave her immediately after they got married so he could get parental rights to his daughter. Kirsty then fell down the stairs after Tyrone moved out of the way of her attempted strike and accused ''him'' of abusing ''her''.
** Tracy Barlow's obsession with Steve [=McDonald=]. Even Kate Ford, who plays Tracy, is sick of it at this point.
** The whole Pat Phelan Saga: No matter how many times he seems to come near being exposed for his many crimes and deceptions, he just happens to get away with it at the last moment so the story can drag out further. See creators pet below for more details on the character and how tedious the plot has become.
** Yazmeen Nazir and Geoff Metcalfe's abuse story has been going on for long and has continuously been growing in vulgarity and cruelty. A lot of viewers have felt that the storyline has been dragged out for too long and the show has just been increasing Geoff's abuse for the sake of publicity. [[spoiler: It took until 2020's Christmas season for Geoff to finally suffer his KarmaHoudiniWarranty.]]
** Seems to be heading this way with Corey Brent after his murder of Seb Franklin in early 2021. He was found not guilty at the trial for his murder. Then in October 2021 a big week worth of episodes dubbed "Horronation Street" seemed to imply he will get his comeuppance after Seb's mother Abi confronted him with a gun. But thanks to a lot of ridiculous coincidences Corey is yet again getting off scot-free and his downfall being pushed back further.
*** Now he has been caught and arrested he confessed but boy it went too long.
** Hope Stape's childhood psychopathy, no matter how many times Fiz is told Hope is dangerous and needs treatment, Fiz doubles down and insists that Hope isn't the problem and these issues will mellow out.
* AscendedMeme: You know a storyline's successful when the ''Prime Minister of the time comments about it in Parliament''.
* AudienceAlienatingEra:
** Michelle discovering that Ryan wasn't biologically hers, swapped with another boy called Alex. Alex disappeared after a few weeks and the storyline was panned by fans and critics. The writers appeared to retcon it from existence until 2018 when Alex returned.
** Kevin and Molly's affair was universally despised, for it being a StrangledByTheRedString RomanticPlotTumor and the downright uncomfortable love scenes. Karl and Sunita's years later was almost like a RecycledScript of it - and was equally hated.
** The 'relationship' between Jamie and Frankie. Numerous viewers and critics expressed {{Squick}} at it. Even Frankie called it off when it got too icky for her.
** Ken abruptly leaving Deirdre to go and live with Denise, hoping to rekindle his relationship with his son Daniel. Mostly because viewers found it a waste of time and knew Ken and Deirdre would inevitably reconcile. Fans also felt a similar way towards the affair with Martha - as it seemed like an odd way to shoehorn Stephanie Beacham onto the show.
** Leanne having a baby after a one night stand with Steve, a character she rarely interacted with outside the Rovers.
** The storyline of Tyrone getting abused by Kirsty, which took up screen time for literal years.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Sinead. She's either liked (or at the very least sympathized with) by fans due to being a confused young woman torn between two men and [[spoiler: having to contend with having cancer and being pregnant]] or hated for being a manipulative slut who had two decent guys fighting over her [[RomanticPlotTumor in an unpopular storyline that hogged too much airtime]] and [[spoiler: her reluctance to reveal her cancer diagnosis to Daniel, even after marrying him, and unwillingness to do anything about it coming off as incredibly selfish.]]
** Gemma is either viewed as a funny, quirky who has been given a lot more depth from her first appearance or as an annoying and useless character [[spoiler: who's the direct cause of Kylie's death and is now a ReplacementScrappy of her.]]
* BrokenBase: The focus on darker storylines has been divisive on the fanbase. While Coronation Street has had its fair share of darker storylines [[note]] from murder, sexual assault, and pedophilia [[/note]] in the past, from 2018 onwards it's brought greater attention to the show [[note]] Bethany's child grooming plotline, Pat Phelan's murders, David's sexual assault, Geoff's abuse of Yasmeen, discrimination, and Griff's white supremacy storyline [[/note]] through controversy and Ofcom complaints. While half the fanbase praises the show for tackling darker subject matters and raising awareness, the other half believes the series is getting too involved in these topics to a point of virtue signaling. The main argument against the series is that it either talks too much about these problems or should never have talked about them in the first place.
* CaptainObviousReveal: Nina's memory loss after Seb Franklin's murder tried to keep the mystery as to who killed Seb but it's pretty obvious from the start that Corey was the one who killed him. Not only is Corey the central antagonist of the storyline, but he's also known to bully other characters and toy with Kelly's emotions. The other suspects were extremely unlikely, as Corey's gang members had nowhere near enough presence in the series to be fully established characters in the show, Asha was nowhere near Corey and Seb at the time of the murder, and Kelly was being given a sympathetic backstory.
* CreatorsPet:
** Sean Tully was known for dominating storylines, despite his lack of popularity. What's more is that he would frequently become a KarmaHoudini for his worse deeds - posing as Liz online to talk to Violet, who would normally have nothing to do with him; he's EasilyForgiven because he claims he just wanted to get to know his son (even though he got exposed when he used the account to shill himself against Violet).
** There are suspicions of Tracy Barlow being one. Looking back over the years of all the horrid things she's done and [[KarmaHoudini the little to nothing she had to answer for it in the end]], you have to wonder if she's just plain ''invincible''.
** Terry Duckworth who in spite of being an unlikable and irredeemable person, the writers have confirmed that they would never kill his character off.
** Teresa Morton was thought to be one, as her more likeable family members were gradually axed from the show - while she remained. However her exit was well-received.
** PAT PHELAN. A man who, as of the start of 2018, [[spoiler: defrauded half the residents of the street, raped two women, killed four men, set his former rape victim Anna Windass up for attempted murder]], committed god only knows how many more petty evils against various other characters, and [[KarmaHoudini gotten away with it all]] whilst easily being one of the DUMBEST villains to ever disgrace the cobbles in 57 years. The worst part? The writers must know just how unbelievably bad a criminal Phelan is, because they had the temerity to make him [[spoiler: brag to Michael, a dying man, that “Napoleon would have loved me. He said he preferred his generals to be lucky than good.”]] There have been at least 5 times that Phelan has put himself in a situation where he can easily be arrested, killed or otherwise destroyed, and each time he’s gotten away with it. WordOfSaintPaul is he'll be getting his before too long, likely in 2018. [[spoiler: He finally did in June, courtesy of Anna stabbing him in the chest.]]
** Nick Tilsley never really suffers in the story and always finds a way to suffer a less than severe punishment. When he sleeps with his half-brother's wife, he isn't punished by the family and David gets kicked out of the house for allegedly trying to kill his better-received brother. When Oliver is put on life support, Nick suddenly discovers he has a child of his own that he never knew he had. Even when he convinces David to help him with a money-laundering scheme, David gets a longer prison sentence than him and Nick admits that he was only envious of David for having a family while Nick didn't.
** By the end of 2021, Kelly Neelan was definitely going that way. Despite having bullied the likes of Asha, Nina, and Seb, and been part of the gang that killed Seb (although she wasn't directly involved in that), we seemed to be supposed to support everything she does, and sympathise with her, as opposed to Abi, who clearly had good reason to hate her.
* DesignatedHero:
** Steve [=McDonald=]. Although he was much of a bad boy and had a record throughout his youth and he eventually grew up, it hasn't always been for the better. Even if his relationships with his ''many'' wives have had their ups and downs, oftentimes his behavior, be it cheating, stealing or just being an overall ass to them (like setting up Vicki to take the fall for his criminal misgivings or getting Max taken away from him and Becky) [[ProtagonistCenteredMorality mostly portrayed in the right.]] Possibly the worst examples of his supposed heroism include during the minibus crash (which was an accident) and he wasn't hurt, instead of trying to help any of the injured or help extricate some of the passengers, he wanders off and it's excused because we learn he's suffering from depression and the whole fiasco of his cheating and getting Leanne pregnant is forgiven by some because of how much they dislike Michelle.
** Beth Sutherland, in 2019 and 2020. Mostly, her bitchy and judgemental nature hasn't been portrayed as a good trait, but the writers seem to think her attitude towards her nephew-in-law is ok! This has been heightened, as although initially she did have a point, as he seemed to have moved on while Sinead was still alive, her violent, aggressive attitude towards Daniel and Bethany has become increasingly hateful, to the point she ruined Sarah's hen party at the news that Daniel and Bethany were moving away. The way that particular episode was framed, you'd think she was the good guy!
** Kelly Neelan, who is seen as a victim of Corey for being blamed for Seb's murder, being manipulated by Corey like Asha, and receiving ire from Abbie and Nina despite her attempts to atone. However, Kelly still obstructed justice, withheld evidence that could have brought justice to Seb's family, and regardless of her fear and guilt, [[AccompliceByInaction she still had the ability to prevent his death in the first place by calling the emergency services in private]].
* DesignatedVillain:
** Zeedan Nazir in the Rana-Zeedan-Kate love triangle story. Zeedan's actions were portrayed as villainous and homophobic, such as; Accepting the bribe from Rana's father to keep the marriage going, outing Rana for having an affair in front of her parents and trying to sabotage Kate and Rana's relationship. Can you really blame him for this? They had an affair, he was betrayed by his wife and close friend, and then he was expected to forgive them by his grandmother Yasmeen. His actions were unjust and definitely disproportionate considering how homophobic her family were, however, being on the LGBT spectrum doesn't excuse or justify betrayal and adultery.
** Johnny Connor in the factory strike storyline, the factory skived off work by watching a film while he was out. While they did do some work to compensate beforehand, they still skived off on working hours and acted like Johnny was in the wrong for docking their wages as punishment.
** Leanne Battersby during the Oliver death storyline. While she was being needlessly angry with Sam Blakeman during her grief and Sam was only nine and didn't intend to upset her, she was still grieving her baby and Nick should have known better than to introduce Sam during this time. Nick should have taken Sam aside and gently explained what Leanne is going through and that now isn't the best time to meet her. Leanne experienced the loss of her baby and was now dealing with a kid who inserted himself into her family without her approval and making the grieving process for her more difficult than it already is.
* DiagnosedByTheAudience: When Sinead Tinker breaks up with Daniel Osbourne for the first time, he hears voices in his head and throws up. He then starts having a breakdown when it's soon revealed he was the one who pushed Ken down the stairs.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Richard Hillman is still fondly remembered as one of the greatest TV villains of all time, and it's more than a decade since he died trying to drown his family.
** During the 90s, Raquel Wolstenholme-Watts was considered this, from [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold her beauty]] to her [[TwoDecadesBehind 80s outfits]] and her well-known [[EverythingsSexierInFrench French lessons]] with Ken.
** If including couples in this respect, then Jack and Vera Duckworth would also get the vote due to being [[HappilyMarried happily married]] ([[LikeAnOldMarriedCouple well, most of the time]]) and despite both dying off the show, ended up being [[DiedHappilyEverAfter together in the end]].
** The original ED married couple, the Ogdens, Stan and Hilda, even 25+ years after his [[TheCharacterDiedWithHim demise]] and her [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere exit]]. In spite of the fact that many fans and even Corrie producers wanted her to return, her actress refused every time, right up until her death, due to her disapproval of the quality of the show in its [[SeasonalRot later years]].
** Stacey aka Orchid, the conwoman who pretended to be a Thai mail order bride was a minor one. Her actress Casey Lee Jolleys was surprised that she was so remembered after only a ten-episode arc - and she'd expected to be hated for trying to con Fred, but was surprised at the warm reception. They ended up bringing her back two years later to give Stacey a redemption arc.
** Sophie Webster was one as a teenager. Fans loved her DeadpanSnarker tendencies as she often played the comic relief to Rosie's drama queen tendencies.
** Maya Sharma quickly entered TheChessmaster status when she managed to get Sunita arrested on her wedding day - by marrying several other men in her name and busting her for bigamy. Let's not get started on her revenge after getting released from prison.
** Jenny Bradley since her 2015 return for being an interesting character and her generally liked relationship with Johnny.
** Emma, for her {{Adorkable}} nature. Whenever she appears, her innocence and kindness is evident. It says a lot that many Coronation fans prefer her with Chesney to Gemma with Chesney when Emma was introduced as a RomanticFalseLead for David, and latterly, that seemed to be her role with Chesney.
** Sam, Nick and Natasha's young son, quite quickly has gained fans, due to his intelligent, quirky personality, as well as his obvious kind heart.
* FairForItsDay:
** The gay storyline involving Todd. Yes, it involved a previously established straight character suddenly coming out and carrying on an affair behind his girlfriend's back. However, it still portrayed Todd sympathetically, any hostility towards him was about the fact that it was an affair (rather than it being with another man) and it eventually resulted in the entire pub standing up for Todd against Les Battersby's homophobia. This was in 2003 and was one of the first times a gay storyline had ever been done in British soaps. There was a mountain of controversy over having gay characters at all. Todd remained a series regular for at least a year, during which another gay character was introduced (and they ''weren't'' [[TokenMinorityCouple paired together]]). Todd was most definitely a trailblazer for the very popular Sophie and Sian pairing that followed.
** The scene depicting the revelation of Hayley as transgender, which by Julie Hesmondhalgh's admission is dated, but was the first time any soap opera had introduced a transgender character.
* FanNickname:
** Deirdre Barlow has the following:
*** ''The Weatherfield One''.
*** Dreary.
** Tracy Barlow has Tracyluv.
** Owen Armstrong has Creator/RickyGervais (due to his likeness to said).
** Asha and Aadi Alahan have Asda and Aldi. Gloria Price even [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments accidentally called them this]] in 2013.
* FetishRetardant: This was the reaction to the makeout between Deirdre and Lewis (Nigel Havers).
* FranchiseOriginalSin: Although a storyline of there being a SerialKiller who ends up dying instead of being apprehended is nothing new, the creation of the wildly popular Richard Hillman has led the writers to try repeatedly to replicate his popularity/persona. Even well over a decade after his demise, characters such as Tony Gordon, John Stape, Frank Foster, Callum Logan and (most notoriously) Pat Phelan have been created as an attempt to be the [[MagnificentBastard criminal mastermind]] that Hillman was, with far less successful results.
* FridgeBrilliance: When Max says that his surname is Turner and that Platt is only his stepdad's name, Griff responds by saying "Turner? Strong name that." This is a very dark and subtle reference to the ''Literature/TheTurnerDiaries'', a controversial book that advocates white supremacy and is famously attributed to many real-life crimes. The perpetrators of the Oklahoma City Bombing, the 1999 London Nail Bombings, and the murder of James Byrd Jr. all made references to the book and had it or pages of it in their possession when they were investigated.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The show is extremely popular in Canada, having aired on Creator/{{CBC}} since April 1966, and is normally their most-watched narrative programme during the week. CBC has also aired many of the hour-long specials as well. The popularity really showed when CBC started skipping episodes in order to keep on track with the UK airings during the 1990s, which didn't fair well with fans. With CBC airing more episodes they have gotten closer to the UK airings, where for example in the 2000's, Canada was nine months behind the UK, and currently, they are three weeks behind.
** In addition to this, cast members do regular meet and greets with fans over there, which definitely shows how dedicated the show is to Canadian culture!
** It's also big in New Zealand, where it has aired since 1964 on [=TVNZ1=] (formerly TV One). The channel has also had the same scheduling issues, to the point that in 2014 they were nearly two years behind the UK in scheduling, and made no effort to do anything. However lately, they have gotten better and currently, New Zealand is only a week behind the UK. The popularity of the series got to the point of national outcry in the 1990s when TV One threatened to remove the show.
* GrowingTheBeard: If you found the largely episodic, slice-of-life comedy of the 60's, 70's, and 80's to be boring and repetitive, the year 1988 was this, where Coronation Street started introducing longer-running, dramatic [[StoryArc story arcs]], and it also saw the beginnings of the show's first major villain, Alan Bradley. From there, while still keeping the show's comedy, Coronation Street began having major story arcs and developed a more SoapWheel format that took shape during the 1990's and continued up to the present day.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Anne Kirkbride's exit episode depicts Deirdre Barlow throwing a trifle while declaring that 'Jelly shouldn't run, it should wobble!' This has drawn a few laughs [[MemeticMutation and inspired at least one meme]], but due to fate getting in the way this was one of the last scenes she filmed before her death. In fact, when [[TheCharacterDiedWithHim Deirdre's onscreen death is announced]], it is stated that an aneurysm was the suspected case.
** Back around Christmastime 2004 while speaking with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Karen, Steve [=McDonald=] spoke about supercouple Jack and Vera Duckworth and how he would bet money that when one of them passes away, [[DiedInYourArmsTonight it will be in the other one's arms.]] A little over three years later, [[spoiler: it didn't happen that way; Vera died alone sitting in Jack's favorite armchair. That said, [[HeartwarmingInHindsight Steve was still in a sense still right]] when Jack died two-and-a-half years after his beloved wife and her ghost appeared to him (which by the way speaks volumes because this ''never'' happens on Corrie), eager to usher him into the afterlife with her and embracing him again before they left.]] However, the scene may once again be back into the former as both Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn have since passed away (although he died before she did).
** In 1968 the first new building appeared in Coronation Street a set of Maisonettes designed in the Brutalist style, however they only lasted until 1971 when Valerie Barlow died by electrocution and knocking over a a portable heater into a packing crate, the Electrical Fire that followed set the block alight and exposing the building's flaws - unsurprisingly they were demolished soon after but such a story is painful to watch after the Grenfell Tower fire.
* HilariousInHindsight: Before getting cast in the soap, Alison King had starred in an ad for ''Daz'' detergent - which parodied ''Coronation Street'' in a soap called 'Cleaner Close'. One that frequently ran while ''Coronation Street'' was airing too.
* JerkassWoobie: Leanne Tilsley. Despite being a manipulative opportunist, a cheat, [[TheMistress a homewrecker]] and usually a total bitch, things have really stunk for her in her life. Her mother abandoned her at birth, she's forced to abort the child she created with the husband she loves, she gets addicted to drugs and works as a prostitute to pay for said addiction, she suffers a miscarriage with her second husband, [[{{Irony}} who then cheats on her and eventually marries the other woman]], her next husband (who was also her first husband) cheats and slept with his sister-in-law ''on Christmas day'', possibly impregnating her, watches her one-time fiancé die in an explosion and her stepson, who used to love her like his own mother, verbally and physically abuses her. Unfortunately for her fans, it becomes less woobie and more {{Jerkass}} with her getting pregnant with Steve's child and it causing problems between her and Nick [[{{Hypocrite}} while she disapproves and even temporarily disowns Toyah for getting involved with Peter.]]
* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt:
** In one episode, the show made a trailer showing that Nick Tilsley would be caught in quicksand and heavily implied that he could be killed by it. Unsurprisingly, Nick was fine and they got him out.
** In another episode, Griff and his gang plant a bomb in a marketplace and would have Alya Nazir seemingly sacrifice herself by driving the van containing the bomb away into an isolated area. In a storyline where immigration, islamophobia, nativism, and radicalization are the main elements, it's extremely unlikely they were going to kill off Alya, especially since they portray her character and Daryan Zahaw as victims of racism who are willing to give Max a second chance despite everyone else's objections.
* MemeticMutation: Granted, it was before the internet became as prominent, but the "Free The Weatherfield One" campaigns that sprung up across the UK after Deirdre Rachid (presently Barlow) was falsely imprisoned.
** Gail Platt loves olives. [[labelnote:Explanation]] A clip from a 2015 episode in which Gail proclaims her love for olives...and then eats one whilst pulling an absolutely ''bizarre'' facial expression towards the camera went viral even amongst non-viewers, and is still frequently joked about amongst fans today.[[/labelnote]]
* {{Moe}}: Emma. Aww. Even her reaction to Chesney and Gemma was adorable. And she is always bubbly and friendly.
* Sam, with his enthusiasm for knowledge, and his generally loveable nature.
* {{Narm}}:
** When Izzy took a strong form of cannabis in 2016 and was freaking out and having hallucinations because of it was obviously meant to be serious and scary but [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGe470HOLPU came across as]] hilarious and ''badly''-acted instead.
** Fiz's reaction to her baby being born with a hole in her heart - "her heart's not big enough to have a hole in it" - was met with universal laughter rather than sadness. Also, her over the top FreakOut reaction to the tram crash and bellowing out "JOHN! JOHN!!" fearing he was a victim and her ScreamingBirth sounded more like she was (badly) singing opera and a nurse displayed right after the delivery that she gave birth to a ''[[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext picture]]'' of Hope.
** The butcher ghost in December 2018. The effects made it look like a live-action Scooby Doo episode, especially when Kirk and Dev run out the door and encounter a bewildered Peter Barlow. With Dev responding to his concerns by blowing a raspberry.
** [[spoiler: Lewis']] death. It was meant to be tragic, but some people found it ridiculous that we were expected to grieve for a ManipulativeBastard.
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: ''Coronation St.: The Mystery of the Missing Hotpot Recipe'' is a HiddenObjectGame for the PC that revolves around [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin finding the missing hotpot recipe]]. Despite being released in 2011, the presentation is rather lacking with just still images, stale dialogue, sound effects that are few and far between, and an absent soundtrack. Gameplay consists of finding the right objects, but the scale of those objects is all over the place with some of the objects being much smaller than you'd expect. The hint button doesn't so much as tell you where to look as it just gives you the solution. Consequences are also minimal because repeatedly clicking the wrong object simply swirls the cursor around the screen for a brief period of time.
* QuestionableCasting:
** Some people have argued this with Simon Barlow's actor Alex Bain. Although Bain's race has never been publicly disclosed, some viewers believe that Simon has noticeably dark skin for a child born to a Caucasian couple. People are generally willing to look past this one though, because Alex has been a great actor even since being introduced as a child.
** Similarly, Eileen's father was played by Edward De Souza, of partial Indian ancestry. Although he has played characters who are clearly supposed to be white (he was a regular hero in Film/HammerHorror films), he has often played "exotic" characters, Mrs. Warboys' Portuguese lover in ''Series/OneFootInTheGrave'', Bond's sheik ex-classmate in ''Film/TheSpyWhoLovedMe'', and is noticeably olive-skinned, compared to blonde Eileen. Ironic considering the fuss about his grandson's father being black.
* ReplacementScrappy: Sylvia Goodwin and Gloria Price were ''two'' lackluster replacements for the popular Blanche Hunt. Fan reception to both women was lukewarm at best and both characters were gone within less than two years of their respective introductions. The latter may be more hated due to being overall unlikable with no PetTheDog moments like the former had and for [[spoiler: stealing Dennis away from Rita.]]
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap:
** Inverted. Michelle Connor was actually quite popular when introduced. However as she dominated more and more storylines (and they got ''really'' weird), fans grew sick of her and despised her.
** Around 2003 Peter Barlow was 'the most hated man in Britain' but one recovery from alcoholism and amazingly cute child later, his injury was a central part of the 50th Anniversary special.
** Abi Franklin was a genuine scrappy in her early, arrogant days; however a few heaping doses of CharacterDevelopment (such as admitting that she’s a terrible mother, getting and trying to maintain a steady job, and her friendship with Sally after protecting her during her stint in prison) have made her a much more tolerable character. It helps that she’s hasn’t lost much of her snark despite becoming much nicer.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** Creator/ArthurLowe had a regular role as Leonard Swindley from 1960 to 1965. Nowadays, he's best remembered as Captain Mainwaring from ''Series/DadsArmy'', a role he took on a few years later.
** Davy Jones of Music/TheMonkees guest starred in a 1960 episode as Ena Sharples' grandson.
** Creator/JackieLane (''Series/DoctorWho'' companion Dodo Chaplet) made a guest appearance in a 1964 episode, two years before she was cast on ''Who''.
** Creator/FrazerHines played Roger Wain for three episodes in 1965. The following year, he was cast in ''Series/DoctorWho'' as companion Jamie [=McCrimmon=].
** Creator/PaulDarrow appeared in two 1969 episodes, nearly a decade before his debut in the iconic role of Avon in ''Series/BlakesSeven''.
** Creator/ElisabethSladen appeared as Anita Reynolds in six episodes in 1970. A few years later, she would be cast in the role of legendary ''Series/DoctorWho'' companion Sarah-Jane Smith.
** Creator/RobJamesCollier was put in the spotlight thanks to playing Liam Connor, but he's now easily more famous for ''Series/AckleyBridge'', ''Series/FateTheWinxSaga'' and of course ''Series/DowntonAbbey''.
** Eunice Bond from a 1961 episode is played by Creator/AngelaDouglas, who would later be best known for her roles in the ''Film/CarryOnSeries''.
** Malcolm Wilkinson from three episodes in 1963 is played by Creator/AnthonyBooth, who would later be best known for playing Mike Rawlins in ''Series/TillDeathUsDoPart'' and Sid Noggett in the ''Film/ConfessionsOfASeries''.
** Herbert Whittle from a 1967 episode is played by Creator/ArnoldRidley, who would later be best known for playing Private Godfrey in ''Series/DadsArmy''.

* RomanticPlotTumour: Yasmeen and Geoff of the DestructiveRomance variety. Fans were so desperate for their extremely prolonged DomesticAbuse story to end to free up Yasmeen for happier stories that the showrunner resorted to promising fans that it would end towards the end of 2020.
* TheScrappy:
** Tina. She gradually became this in the eyes of the fans of the show, after her cheating with Peter after knowing full well how horrible it is -- see above-- and her JerkAss behaviour (threatening to report Rob and Tracy's illegal merchandise simply out of spite) before she died. Another cause was her being featured too often in every scene leading up to her death.
** [[GossipyHens Janice]] [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder Battersby.]] There have been many more over the years, but most are either RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap or written out, whereas Janice remained for years despite the fan's dislike.
** Kevin got very unlikeable too in post-2010 storylines, although some think Kevin was worse back in 1997 and 1998 with his affair with Natalie Horrocks and Sally's affair with Greg Kelly. Even throughout the 2000s prior to his affair with Molly, he was only the lesser of the two evils regarding him and Sally.
** Sean Tully is hated by fans for the large amount of screentime he receives, despite being a fairly one-note comedy character at best, an offensive CampGay stereotype at worst, and rarely having much to do with the ongoing storylines. This led to some fans suggesting he is still there because he is friends with the producer. Ironically, attempts to give Sean a stronger part in a storyline occasionally backfire, most notably during the bullying storyline in 2023-2024, when he refused to accept his son Dylan or his friends could be bullying Liam, at one point referring to the accusations as baseless despite Liam being pushed to the brink of suicide.
** Kirsty Soames. In addition to her long, ''long'' storyline, she was just unpleasant and manipulative and made you feel really bad for Tyrone to go from one horrid excuse of a lover to another in such a short time.
** Beth, for her unspeakable selfishness in general, and for describing [[spoiler: Aidan's suicide as selfish]]. She further pushed herself this way by getting aggressive towards the Platts, and then having the nerve to [[spoiler: refer to Aidan as a "top bloke" to Maria, after the nasty aforementioned comment.]]
** Abi Franklin. She's a known drug addict, she neglects her own children and forces her son Seb to sacrifice his personal life by looking after the twins. She allowed her then boyfriend to beat Seb and never bothered telling Seb that he was HIV positive. When she got out of rehab she broke into Eileen's house and proceeded to live there without her knowledge, when Eileen found out She threatened to '''sue her''' for assault and Seb discovered that Abi stole his money as well. While Eileen eventually moved out, Abi immediately moved in without paying or permission. After everything that's happened, she still has the audacity to see herself as a great mother and happily verbally abuse others. These days, however, see RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap.
** Ryan was widely disliked when he was portrayed by Sol Heras. Whereas Ben Thompson's portrayal of him showed that, whilst he was still a troublemaker, still loved his mother and even had a HopeSpot of him going off the university, the recasting had him as lazy, disrespectful drug addict/dealer who pushed drugs onto Sophie and broke up Chesney and Katy. Heras' acting also didn't help matters.
** Hannah, Jim [=McDonald's=] 2018 girlfriend. A [[ManipulativeBitch master manipulator,]] she conspired with Jim to impersonate his and Liz's supposed long-dead daughter Katie, claiming she'd been mistaken for another dead baby in the hospital. [[spoiler: She wasn't, she was just scamming Liz for money, and Katie was indeed dead all along]].
** Tyler, Simon's ex-friend who was a ToxicFriendInfluence, and his equally obnoxious mother Vicky, who creates trouble with everyone at the factory just to get a reaction out of them, especially Sinead.
** Gary is definitely becoming a scrappy now, with his selfish and cruel behaviour that led to [[spoiler: Rana being killed, letting Carla think she is to blame and eventually taking his frustrations out on Sarah of all people.]]
** Bernie Winter hasn't exactly been a likeable character, she barges back into Gemma's life to steal money that was intended for their babies, tried to seduce Chesney, used her daughter's urine to sell fake pregnancy tests, shoplifts, fakes a charity, lacks sympathy for Sinead then ungratefully slanders Chesney for profit.
* SerialEscalation: One of the biggest moments in the first decade of the series was when a train derailed from the viaduct. In the 1980s, it was the Rovers catching fire. Since then, the Rovers has caught fire another time, the Corner Shop has been set fire with its owners in it, a fire and propane tank explosion struck the luxury flats, the bistro exploded and caused a tram to crash into the Corner Shop and the Kabin, and the factory has burned down twice. The street has seen no fewer than three serial killers, part of a run of about two dozen murders on the street since the 1970s. Of those murders, only four had been committed before the 1980s.
* SignatureScene:
** Hilda Ogden receiving Stan's glasses after his death.
** Alan Bradley's [[CarFu unfortunate run-in with a tram]] whilst chasing Rita.
** Richard Hillman driving into the canal with his family.
** The 50th anniversary tram crash.
* ShockingMoments:
** The Joinery explosion/Tram crash in December 2010.
** Pat Phelan forcing Andy Carver to kill Vinny Ashford in exchange for his freedom, and then Phelan kills Andy because he couldn't risk freeing him or letting him report his crimes to the police.
** Geoff Metcalfe killing Yasmeen Nazir's chicken, Charlotte, and then tricking Yasmeen into eating her pet after cooking it.
* SongAssociation: The Wannadies' "You & Me" will ''always'' be associated with Richard Hillman trying to kill his family via MurderSuicide.
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** During the infamous scene of David pushing Gail down the stairs, not only was her dramatic fall illogical (down the ''second'' flight of stairs; given her body weight, [[ArtisticLicensePhysics she should have just landed at the bottom of the first landing]]), but over the obviously-a-stunt-double's head-first landing in the living room. Here's the [[http://youtu.be/WAOb-_b9QjQ scene in all its glory.]]
** When Gary Windass saves Sarah Platt by pushing her out of the way of an oncoming car, it's very clear that he's just pushing a wooden mannequin that was covered up by a quick edit or jump cut, that and Sarah was way too far away after Gary pushed her. The behind-the-scenes footage did explain that since this episode was filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic, they had to abide by social distancing and worked around it through the mannequin.
* TakeThatScrappy:
** After surviving a minor car crash, Janice Battersby acts like even more of a SpoiledBrat than ever, and goes about ruining Sally Webster's work. Sally finally snaps and punches her in the nose. Not only that but it went further by Danny Baldwin firing Janice (again), and not one person sprang to her defense.
** Alya being blasted by Carla for her pretentious behavior.
** Tracy being irritated by Liam. As she is such a KarmaHoudini, it is always a pleasure to see her attacked or annoyed. Another example is when Becky and Gail blasted her in 2010, or when David, Gail, Becky and others made it clear to Deirdre they were sorry Claire hadn't successfully killed her in 2011. Her being rejected and attacked by both Seb and Abi also counts. After what she did to Abi, it's impossible to have any sympathy for her.
** Audrey telling Nick he's fake and phoney.
** Following on from above, while poor Lily didn't deserve to have her birthday ruined and Shona was obviously having a hard time controlling Max at this moment, was anyone actually sympathetic to Nick when Max went for him with the rubber mallet?
** [[spoiler: Tracy's humiliation after her affair with Paula. This results in Amy being disgusted with her, and Paula telling her how malicious and selfish she is, and even gentle Emma being irritated by her rudeness.]]
** Nina telling Beth after the latter attempts her usual self-righteous vitriol that the real crime is her throwing nice clothes away. Later, Carla asks her if she's not going to be annoying, and then adding- "Oh wait, that's impossible, isn't it?"
** Daniel telling Beth Sinead wouldn't have wanted her being involved with Bertie if she had known the way her aunt was going to behave. This is exactly what many viewers have been thinking.
** Shona spilling a drink on Bernie. Bernie's selfish and arrogant attitude towards her daughter and son-in-law certainly earns her no sympathy in this instance.
** And latterly, Shona again chewing Tracy Barlow out for being evil and heartless.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Poppy was widely liked by fans, awaiting some kind of plot for her. The most she ever did was tell Tara that Dev cheated on her with Lisa. She was abruptly axed when she got into a few arguments with Betty in the pub.
** Natasha spent ages as a side character, aside from a brief fling with Tony. The first time she got any kind of focus was the start of her exit storyline. Then she was brought back ten years later as a successful businesswoman, only to be killed off the following year in order to facilitate her son Sam being brought up by his father Nick and stepmother Leanne (whose son Oliver was killed off at the end of 2020).
** Crosses over with TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot. Tracy Barlow actually got some CharacterDevelopment following Rob's arrest, culminating in risking her own life to save Carla's in the minibus crash. It doesn't stick. Not long after Tracy's back to her old Jerkass self and her OddFriendship with Carla returns to hatred. Working with Mary appears to have rubbed off a bit, however.
** Speaking of Tracy, Rob could count as this as he seemed popular with the fanbase and appeared to be a lovable rogue whilst being quite cocky and worked well with Tracy as a double act. But then the writers went down the typical route and made him into another soap killer, which forced the character to be locked up for decades to come. It's possible the producers feel the same due to Rob making return stints from 2015 to 2017, with his last one being a kind of redemption story.
** Katy Armstrong was a sweet and pretty girl with a loving relationship with Chesney that produced a son. She then turned into a jerk who cheated on him, then dumped him and moved away, only to be unceremoniously [[BusCrash killed offscreen]] in October 2017 as an excuse to bring Chesney's son Joseph back to the street and cause more friction in the already grating LoveTriangle of Chesney, Sinead and Daniel.
** Both Jamie Baldwin and Violet Wilson were among some of the most earnest and likable characters on the street. Instead of making them the more memorable and fleshed out characters they could have been, the former ended up being wasted in an icky storyline involving a relationship with his stepmother while the latter was initially set up to be a loving partner for Jason but was subjected to Sarah coming in between them and acting like a bitch just because she could. When she ended up [[spoiler: pregnant with Sean's child]] he stepped up to help and they moved away together, seemingly to greener pastures, [[spoiler: but no. Even away from the street, a later appearance by them still depicted the couple [[YankTheDogsChain as miserable as ever and sniping away at each other.]]]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** One of the series' most iconic and well-loved characters, Deirdre Barlow, passed away in 2015. Her funeral, which should have been a beautiful send-off to a longtime and important character in universe, was instead somewhat downplayed in favor for [[UnintentionallyUnsympathetic Carla Connor's]] gratuitous gambling problem, to many fans' chagrin.
** Sinead's death could have been a lot more meaningful and graceful if they had left out the affair storyline between Daniel and Bethany. The affair was unnecessary and needlessly added to the tragedy of Sinead's death.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Oftentimes, especially within the last two decades.
** Everyone [[CrapsackWorld lives miserable and empty lives]] and never has any lasting good luck, as rare as it is. [[DysfunctionJunction Relationships between family, friends and lovers never remain stable for long]], due to infidelities, [[KilledOffForReal death]] or {{betrayal|Tropes}} of some other form. Residents, ''especially'' returning residents, on the Street out of the blue end up [[TookALevelInJerkass taking several levels in jerkass]]. Others do [[ItsAllAboutMe horribly selfish things]] and [[KarmaHoudini never receive any punishment for it]] and yet still think it's their right to call people out [[{{Hypocrite}} on their behavior]]. Plus, usually there is an occasional true villain in the form of a {{criminal|s}} who really is a bad guy (or girl) instead of just your run-of-the-mill jerk who's more likely to be killed off.
** From 2017; the show lost a sense of justice as characters are instead killed off instead of being arrested or punished. Since the main villains (i.e. Nathan Curtis, Geoff Metcalf, and Corey to name a few) are designed to just escalate cruelty and make the show as bleak as possible until they get caught. While some of the villains were based on real issues (prostitution rings, men's mental health, male victims of sexual assault, and gaslighting), they don't really explain the issue or explain how to get out of it, they just just show horrible it is until the villain dies or gets arrested. Instead of showing a villain redeeming themselves, they just introduce a new, bigger villain to make the previous villain sympathetic and a lesser evil in comparison, when it doesn't really negate the evils they've done or condone the crimes they've committed.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Nick Tilsley, especially during the whole "Who's the Daddy?" storyline and its aftermath. As unfortunate as it is to have lasting brain damage, it was still his own fault ''for sleeping with his brother's wife on Christmas.'' He should have known by now who his brother was, what, if pushed far enough, he was capable of and should have just manned up and confess to David and Leanne in the first place. Plus, in addition to being an unsympathetic character already, it may come off as a form of LaserGuidedKarma for sleeping with his then-best friend's wife in a year earlier while said ex-best friend was [[{{Irony}} recovering from serious injuries he had sustained.]] It's not helped by the fact that after the accident, Nick (falsely) claimed that his brother David had tried to kill him, resulting in David being ostracized from his family, kicked out of his own home, sacked from his job, denied access to his children and treated like a monster on par with Richard Hillman.
** Earlier before Sophie and Sian were open about being together, Claire had walked in on them kissing while they were briefly filling in for her babysitting Dev's children. During this time Simon and Adi had done some rough housing and the latter bumped his head. Sophie and Sian letting Claire take the fall at Roy and Hayley's wedding was meant to be a low moment for the two - showing that they needed to stop lying. Except Sian lied because Claire had chosen to say that she walked in on them kissing - a detail she ''didn't'' need to reveal, effectively outing two confused and scared teenage girls - and she had promised to keep it a secret. So Claire being thought of as a child abuser came across as LaserGuidedKarma instead.
** Beth's attitude towards Daniel. Yes, it's understandable that she was pissed off that he moved on towards Bethany so quickly, but it doesn't excuse her vicious nature and lack of understanding.
** Leanne Battersby during and after the loss of Oliver. At first her immense grief and denial was completely understandable, but she soon began to lash out at anyone who dared even suggest that his life-support be turned off, in spite of how hopeless the situation is to the point that the poor boy had multiple organ failure. Then at the memorial service, she lashes out at Sam, a ''ten-year-old boy'', just because he wanted to lend condolences and referred to him as his brother, and continues to both shun him and put Nick in a position of forcing him to choose between the two of them. When she starts believing that Oliver is trying to communicate with her, she slaps Simon for pointing out the obvious and unwittingly ''forces him'' be the provider since she wasn't getting bereavement therapy or getting support for Simon. Leanne does redeem herself by taking Simon's place as a dealer but at Harvey's trial, she portrays herself as the real victim of Harvey despite; Simon's partner, Jacob, being hospitalised, Simon being thrown into debt, Sam being abducted, Nick and Sam being shot at, and Peter being assaulted at the hospital while defending Simon from one of Harvey's henchmen.
** Kelly Neelan during the Seb Franklin murder plot, while receiving a life sentence after being used as a scapegoat by her friends is somewhat disproportionate. She still played a huge part in Seb's murder and Nina's assault; she fought Nina at the party (assault), followed them home while yelling insults (harassment), and did nothing to alert the authorities until she was caught (obstruction of justice or withholding evidence). The series tried to retcon her role in the story by saying she was the only one in Corey's gang who felt guilty, trying to stop Corey from kicking Seb while he was unconcious, and the series even introduced an abusive mother to further drive in some pity for Kelly (without mentioning her father, Rick Neelan). Tragic or not, it doesn't really excuse the fact that Seb's dead because of Kelly, her refusal to help costed vital hours that could have saved Seb, and she refused to help in the investigation by coming clean and explaining everything.
* ValuesDissonance: A comedy bit in the 2000s era had Kelly Crabtree excitedly peeking through the blinds in Liam Connor's office while he was changing and taking a photo that's implied to be a nude. All the other women excitedly crowd around, and it's only Hayley who disapproves. When Liam discovers this, he treats it like a mere annoyance and has Kelly delete the photo. What was seen as harmless rude comedy in the 2000s looks differently now - where taking nude pictures or videos of someone without their consent is illegal.
* {{Wangst}}: Both Leanne and Yasmeen are going through this. Instead of trying to do anything practical to get past their traumatic events, they wallow in it and get angry/defensive whenever anyone tries to offer help or advice. Not helping is how both of their attitudes are extending two already [[ArcFatigue protracted and tiresome]] storyines.
* WhyWouldAnyoneTakeHimBack:
** The overall fan reaction to Sunita Alahan returning to Dev after he failed to disclose that he had a teenage daughter. Then again when ''he'' took ''her'' back a few years later during her gratuitous affair with Karl.
** Anytime a past love returns to either Peter or Nick, particularly with Leanne. They are clearly incapable of being a decent, faithful, partners and the latter couple has reunited at least twice in spite of their disapproving families and them bringing out the worst in each other.
* TheWoobie:
** Chesney Brown from the time of having to live virtually destitute with his awful mother when he was a child, falling for and fathering a child with his girlfriend, only for her to fall for a complete jerk then eventually move away with the child, develop feelings for another woman who constantly two-timed him [[spoiler: and left him for the other man and then had to contend with the mother of his child being killed in a car accident.]]
** Daniel Osbourne. Abandoned by both of his parents by the time he's a teenager, he grows up to be a brilliant student but a ''very'' deeply troubled with mental instabilities. He returns years later to visit his father's side of the family, but they are more or less dismissive of him. Then he finds a girlfriend that he loves and gets pregnant, only to learn that his father convinced her to get an abortion and then he tried to kill him for their strained relationship and for possibly destroying his only chance of a family. And after the truth comes out over what he did, he becomes a pariah to his family and said girlfriend leaves him for her ex-boyfriend. They do get back together but she's diagnosed with cervical cancer, which was cured for a while until it returned as terminal cancer during their wedding, forcing him to dote on her every need and face the future as a single father. During Sinead's final day, he kisses Bethany Platt in a moment of emotional vulnerability which causes both of them to become pariahs and cause Sinead's cancer to escalate. Sinead then dies, leaving Daniel a single father with no support from Sinead's family and a crushing sense of guilt for escalating his wife's death.
** Jack Webster. The poor little boy has sepsis, and [[spoiler: had to have his foot amputated.]] This has now got even worse, as [[spoiler: while he was starting to get some hope with a one-legged race, he ended up falling and bleeding.]] [[spoiler: However, he managed to have some triumph as he was responsible for Bryan being vindicated for his cruel treatment at the hands of Phil]].
** Where to begin with Bethany Platt; when she was just a day old Alison Webster (who had become mentally unstable following the death of her newborn son) abducted her from hospital, as a toddler her step-grandfather Richard Hillman tried to suffocate her along with the rest of the Platts in a murder-suicide before driving the car she was in into a canal from which she had to be rescued, then later she was abducted by her crazed grandmother (anyone noticing a theme here) who then tried to jump off a church roof with her so they could join Bethany's deceased father in heaven. Later she nearly died when she ate a vast amount of drugs that David had hidden in her teddy bear thinking they were sweets and was hospitalised. When she returned to the street as a teenager, she was then bullied mercilessly by the other teens to a point of developing body confidence issues and she was manipulated by a criminal who was suddenly found dead under her house. Her mum was institutionalised after having a nervous breakdown, her aunt was murdered, her uncle, David, tried to commit murder-suicide to avenge her and was then sent to jail when her second uncle, Nick, framed him for money laundering. After being kissed by an emotionally vulnerable Daniel Osbourne during the death of his wife, she was then blamed for Sinead's death and portrayed as the instigator of the kiss due to her feelings for him. The worst of it all was when she was groomed by ephebophiles and systematically raped by older men, where she then developed severe PTSD from the incident.
** Alison Wakefield Webster, Kevin's second wife. Already leading a troubled life after the childhood drowning of her little sister, she struggled through life only to [[HopeSpot get a fresh start with Kevin, whom she loved, was pregnant by and got married to]], only for their newborn son to die of Streptococcus B that she unknowingly passed to when delivering him just days later, Kevin turning on her and suspecting that she killed her sister, she taking fellow newborn Bethany Platt out of the hospital as her own and upon surrendering her, [[DrivenToSuicide runs into the path of a lorry unable to deal with her immense grief.]]
** Liam Connor JR with the horrendous bullying he went through in 2024.
