Go To

* ActorShipping: Quentin×Mélanie, popular even before the actors were known to be playing Ulrich and Yumi respectively. A bit different from other examples in that they are actually currently dating (and caused quite an uproar when they revealed it!). Becomes adorably sweeter when the two eventually marry and have a daughter together in TheNewTwenties.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The music is actually more varied and more techno-inspired this time around, utilizing chiptune, chord progression and accommodates the mood of each scene pretty well.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Laura. Some fans are glad a new Lyoko-Warrior finally is joining, others (apart from the DieForOurShip aspect) are questioning the point of adding a feminine counterpart to Jérémie when such a character (Aelita) already exists, while still others would rather have had Sissi as a new recruit, particularly since she's now blonde and could easily fill a similar role in a much less intelligent (and much less contrived as a result) way. Not helped by "Virus" giving her major Mary Sue traits, and "Mutiny" [[spoiler: making her a flat-out traitor.]]
* BrokenBase:
** The 2D being replaced by live-action, of course. When it got announced, half of the fanbase was excited while the others were crying the death of the series. (Which ultimately turned out to be the latter as revealed under {{Sequelitis}}).
** People didn't like the ice and forest sectors being absent in the series. Interviews with the designers of the show brought to light that they decided to leave out the Ice and Forest sectors so that they can increase the quality of the other projects they adapted for ''Evolution''; In other words, making two really nice sectors instead of four mediocre ones (something the original series always suffered from).
** The fact that none of the English VA of the original animated series were asked to reprise their roles for the series with a whole new voice cast outright replacing them for English speakers.
** Fans are divided about whether Laura [[spoiler:being excluded from the group and getting her memory erased at the end of "Mutiny"]] was a well-deserved punishment or [[spoiler:a {{Hypocrite}} move from Jeremy, considering how many times he himself ended up putting the Lyoko-Warriors in trouble with his own mistakes]], considering how massively hated Laura was in the series due to being TheScrappy and a InsufferableGenius and how big of a threat she was to the Aelita×Jérémie ship, many were glad [[spoiler:she was banned from the group]].
* DieForOurShip: Laura ''wasn't'' well-received by Aelita×Jérémie fans when it was revealed she would serve as TheRival to Aelita. And it only got worse after her introduction episode. The show later downplays the LoveTriangle, and it's solely about Laura being less of a team player, and getting on everybody's nerves. However [[spoiler:they would ultimately win out when Laura gets banned from the group and becomes an enemy to the Warriors following her betrayal in "Mutiny".]]
* EnsembleDarkHorse: Jim is every bit as popular and iconic as he was in the original series (if not moreso), to the point that even ''Code Lyoko Evolution'''s most hardcore detractors state that his presence ''alone'' saves the show. He is every bit as goofy, yet stern to the characters, as he is the original series.
* FanNickname:
** Before Laura's name was revealed, she was called "Unknown Blonde Girl" or simply "Blonde Girl".
** The "Overshark" for Yumi's modified Overwing.
* FanonDiscontinuity: A lot of fans think this of the series. That a new creative team is working on it, with the old one only there for the first two transitional episodes, makes this even easier. [[note]]This even extends to the original creators of the original series as well (whom flat out despise the series) and to some degree Sophie Decroisette.[[/note]]
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: While the actors (and the series overall) were heavily criticized for being wooden in places, Mélanie Tran's portrayal of Yumi, as well as Bastien Thelliez's portrayal of Jim, were seen as harmless at worst for the former and stellar for the latter. The actors do seem to get better the further the series progresses, however, it helps that most of them look exactly like their animated counterparts.
* InformedWrongness: In "Betting on Odd", William and Ulrich get called out by Yumi and Aelita for acting "dangerous, idiotic and unwise", simply because they decided to pick a fight with a couple of Mantas while the girls deactivated the tower. Aside from the fact that this is a perfectly sound strategy to handle the situation, they weren't even outnumbered and were working well together. The only thing that could be said against them is that they perhaps weren't taking the situation as seriously as they should have been, letting the Mantas strafe them a couple times while doing a NonchalantDodge. Yumi and Aelita come off as being overbearing rather than reasonable as a result.
* JustHereForGodzilla: Several detractors of the series were willing to ignore its faults, if to see [[SixthRanger William]] come back as a good guy after being submitted to an infamous HeelFaceDoorSlam in the original series. While some still hated this series, William's portrayal wasn't as hated as Jérémie's, Aelita's or Laura's.
* MagnificentBastard: After its defeat in ''Code Lyoko'', [[BigBad XANA]] barely survived Jérémie's multi-agent program by fleeing inside the Cortex and giving its source codes to Ulrich, Yumi, Odd and Aélita in order to later regain its strength by retaking them. Still wanting to TakeOverTheWorld, XANA uses Lyoko's towers to sent specters on Earth in order to take back its codes. A master manipulator, XANA successfully manipulated Aélita into giving it most of her codes by having a specter masquerading as her mother and almost succeeded in manipulating William into joining it by [[VillainHasAPoint pointing out the heroes' genuine failures in handling him]]. An opportunist, XANA also hacked Kadic's computer system in order to distract the heroes while it attempts to destroy the [[CoolShip Skidbladnir]]. XANA also successfully figures out Jérémie's plan of using fake codes against him, forcing the latter to abandon the plan despite its initial success. [[BroughtDownToBadass Despite losing most of its power]] and its murderous tendencies, XANA lost none of its smarts, regaining 95% of its power by the end of the series, and was only stopped because Tyron shut his supercomputer down [[spoiler: in an attempt to kill the Lyoko Warriors]].
* MemeticMutation: The loss of the Lyoko Warriors iconic big foreheads in the 3D world are the only thing this series ever gets talked about nowadays. Making this a hilarious case of {{Irony}} as their big foreheads were a huge source of memes in the original series.
* {{Moe}}: While some of the live action version of the Lyoko Warriors closely resemble their animated counterparts, the 3D models of Yumi and Aelita in Lyoko are considered to be far more adorable than their original 3D selves from the previous series, especially with their expressions.
* MoralEventHorizon: Initially, Professor Tyron only wanted to keep the Cortex running, unknowingly keeping XANA running, which made the Lyoko Warriors think he could be parlayed with. However, he crosses the horizon when he [[spoiler: shuts down his computer with the Warriors inside, knowingly condemning [[WouldHurtAChild children]] to [[FateWorseThanDeath the Digital Sea.]]]]
* {{Narm}}: Introducing a spectre in the form of a child who, rather inexplicably, attacks the heroes with easily escapable (literally, they just shove the kid away) yet somehow debilitating hugs. It's revealed the spectre drains energy from the Warriors by way of skin contact, but it still looks rather silly.
* QuestionableCasting: [[BrokenBase Depending which part of the fanbase you ask]] when it comes to the main actors, though many agree that the castings for Ulrich, Jeremie, Aelita, Yumi, Jim and Franz Hopper were spot on as they attempted to look almost as close as their animated counterparts as possible, with Jeremie, Aelita, Yumi, Jim and Franz Hopper agree to be the best attempt at bringing their animated counterparts to live action (though Jeremie's and Aelita's portrayals would be highly criticized for going against what was established in the original series). Where as the worst offenders of this was Anthea (who is a ''blonde'' instead of her canonical pink hair), Sissi (who is also blonde in this series, though her being blonde was chalked up to a line Odd said in the original series), her father Principal Delmas (who not only looks younger than the original series version and is clean shaven, he ''doesn't even look like his animated counterpart'' at all, nor does he attempt to even resemble the character in spirit giving him a major case of AdaptationalAttractiveness), William (who looks far too similar in appearance to ''Ulrich'' to the point they could easily pass as siblings) and Odd (who's not only brown haired in this series and lacks his iconic AnimeHair, he's also closer to the age Odd is by the time the series starts and is the second youngest of the entire cast next to Jeremie who got a major case of DawsonCasting).
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: William, after being a BaseBreakingCharacter in the original series (a well-liked one at that who got popular over time), lost even more detractors after having [[TookALevelInKindness taken a level in kindness]], especially in episode 6. He's still a bit of a hothead, but he plays ''much'' nicer with the gang, especially to Ulrich, and acts as a {{Foil}} to Laura in the way he acts.
* {{Sequelitis}}: Even if there is a BrokenBase regarding the show's actual quality, most diehard fans will say that it's not at the level of the original series, in part because said series is a ToughActToFollow to begin with. It's fine as a standalone series, however.
* TakeThatScrappy: Laura, a polarizing figure in the team and arguably the most polarizing character of the entire franchise, [[spoiler: finally has her memory wiped after betraying the group and essentially gets booted off the main cast and becomes an permanent enemy to the team.]]
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks:
** The 2D being replaced by live-action is the most obvious example. Detractors point out it limits what XANA's attacks can be due to the budget. [[note]]As revealed under WhatCouldHaveBeen, a 2D animated sequel was one of two options to continue the Code Lyoko franchise, with the live action version winning out.[[/note]]
** There were fans who were mad the Supercomputer wasn't exactly identical to the animated counterpart (such as reactivating it requiring to connect to cables together instead of drawing a switch). The design change was likely done to better reflect what an '''actual''' supercomputer would look like.
** The new theme song is considered by many fans worse than the original; It still has some beats of the original {{Leitmotif}}, but it's by and large a unique composition themed around techno-style music.
** The fact everyone except William can now deactivate towers instead of Aelita alone. [[note]]{{Justified|Trope}} as XANA did this in order to [[BackFromTheDead revive himself]].[[/note]]
** The redesign of the Lyoko Towers to look more like something out of ''Film/{{Tron}}'' still doesn't sit well with some fans. [[note]]The series being announced right after the then-recent ''Film/TronLegacy'' being released doesn't help.[[/note]]
** Several small elements had to be changed when going from animated to live action: the appearance of the manhole cover [[note]]likely constructed so that the actors would have a place to climb into given that those scenes were shot on location[[/note]], the removal of Kiwi and several other minor characters, and the toning down of XANA's attacks to be more budget friendly.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** The previous series had the Lyoko Warriors finally accept Sissi as a friend to the group that put an end to their feud (and they still do in ''Evolution''), yet she's heavily OutOfFocus in this series (and it's revealed that she barely made it in the show), when she could've ''easily'' taken Laura's place (a role the {{Prequel}} season from the original series had already toyed with and which the final episode hinted at) as the Seventh Warrior, meaning that fans once again miss out on Sissi actually fighting on Lyoko, making matters worse is that Sissi could easily act as a means to cover the Warriors' trails from her father.
** Speaking of Sissi, Herve and Nicholas her two minions from the original series are absent from this series, with only the latter getting a name drop (implying Nicholas was going to appear in some form). Many have felt with Sissi now a friend to the Lyoko Warriors meant that Herve could have easily taken up Sissi's old role as TheRival to Jeremie and antagonize the group or even have Laura take up Sissi's old role as part of Herve's friend group, also her former bully victims, Milly and Tamiya are completely absent in this series when they were ''major'' characters in the original animated series.
** Speaking of Laura, her sharing the last name of Gauthier, heavily implies she could be related to Theo Gauthier, a minor one shot character from Season 1 of the original animated series who had a thing for first Sissi then Yumi, said character who could've easily teamed up with Laura after her FaceHeelTurn to antagonize the Lyoko Warriors alongside Professor Tyron and XANA. However Theo is nowhere to be seen.
** Surprisingly, Professor Tyron ends up as this. He's supposed to be depicted as an old enemy of Franz Hopper, and thus should have full knowledge of Project Carthage. He's also the first human enemy the Lyoko Warriors have faced who wasn't a hindrance at school (barring Peter Duncan, who spent his whole episode possessed by XANA), but rather a legitimately dangerous MadScientist, and even has his own army of {{Mooks}} that are human enemies for the Lyoko Warriors to fight, and near the end, has Anthea on his payroll. All of this ''should'' make for a dangerous KnightOfCerebus antagonist giving XANA a run for his money, but instead he ends up as a VillainyFreeVillain who is completely ignorant of XANA and doesn't actually seem to be up to anything that is evil. Likewise, much of his work remains rather vague and unexplained. The Ninjas potentially being virtual avatars for TheMenInBlack? Never looked at. His motivations? Never explained. Backstory? Only one scene with Hopper. It isn't until what ends up being the SeriesFinale that he takes an active role, so one might assume that this was being saved for future seasons...but with Moonscoop now bankrupt, Tyron just ends up as a rather passive character who barely qualifies as a villain, with XANA remaining the main enemy for the Lyoko Warriors.
** By the same token with Tyron, Anthea falls into this. Her finally reappearing? A good thing as it's a legitimately decent twist...but the problem is that she ends up being more of a LivingMacguffin. We don't get much of her personality from her few, brief appearances, and her own backstory is only addressed near the end...in a way that only dredges up more questions [[note]]Is she lying about marrying Tyron due to him obviously needing to lie to Delmas and Jim? Is she really loyal to him? Why is she working with him?[[/note]]. Like with Tyron, she might have been planned to have a more active role in a theoretical Season 6 [[note]]due to Season 1 being treated as Season 5[[/note]], but instead remains stuck in Tyron's facility just like Tyron himself.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** As with the previous series, we never once see Jérémie's Lyoko form. Same also goes for Sissi who after finally being accepted into the group's friend circle could've easily taken Laura's role as the Seventh Warrior.
** Downplayed with William. One one part, several fans wished to see his original Lyoko avatar to see what were his original powers were before getting XANA-fied. However, most fans argues that he is much better in ''Evolution'' since he permanently joined the team, still stood out (since he's unable to deactivate towers), was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap, and kept [[FaustianRebellion the powers XANA gave him]] in Season 4.
** The whole concept of the series seems to finally delve into the backstory of Project Carthage. The Cortex seems a good fit, being built up as an EvilCounterpart location to Lyoko, and it's implied that Tyron's history with Hopper goes all the way back to Carthage. Instead of this history being used to further the plot and expand on the lore of the series, the Lyoko Warriors are only concerned about the Cortex being used to house XANA and incorrectly assume that Tyron and XANA are working together [[note]]Which Episode 16 confirms is not the case, as XANA is able to act the way he is because Tyron has ''massively'' FailedASpotCheck)[[/note]], and ultimately remained concerned about killing XANA, leaving Carthage in the background once again.
** Back to Laura, she was clearly set up to be a full fledged enemy to the Lyoko Warriors after joining them temporarily (in a similar vein to William) [[spoiler:following her betrayal in "Mutiny", that lead to her eventual banishment from the team and she immediately uses the contact card Tyron gave to her earlier to identify the gang, exposing their identities and that of Kadic to him, setting her up to be hired by Tyron to work for him to potentially becoming a Ninja.]] Unfortunately the series wound up getting cancelled after one season before the Lyoko Warriors even got a chance to actually fight and or reason with her.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The 3D portions of the episodes are ''vastly'' superior in terms of design and looks (most notably dropping the infamous big foreheads of the original 3D designs due to bringing them more in-line with their live action cast). The Factory building itself is also quite impressive to look at, even looking fairly realistic. The reactivation of the Supercomputer, especially, is a wonder to see. The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80apDVFYp0U Return to the Past animation]] is also evocative of the original, but much more lively.
