* AdaptationDisplacement: Fans are more apt to remember the 2000s animated series than the original books, both of which are still more well remembered than the direct-to-video entries from the late '80s.
* AssPull: A particularly egregious one occurs in one episode when Charley and Emily use Samuel's ice cream dispenser to serve customers on the dock while he's away, only for the machine to jam and unload a flood of ice cream across the entire dock. After exhausting every other option, including having ''Clifford push the lever to no avail'', what is the trick Samuel shows them? ''Simply lifting the lever up a bit before pressing down''.
* CriticalDissonance: The 2021 film got just a 51% Tomatometer rating on Website/RottenTomatoes based on 63 reviews, but it stands at a 94% audience approval score on the same site with over 500 verified audience ratings. It also received an "A" from audiences polled by [=CinemaScore=], and 4.5 out of 5 stars from those polled by [=PostTrak=].
* CultClassic: While the 2000s series is ''very'' well known and is fondly remembered by a lot of people, the Main/SpinOff, ''[[WesternAnimation/CliffordsPuppyDays Puppy Days]]'', is pretty obscure (It doesn't help that the show initially only aired once a week). Despite this, ''Puppy Days'' has a small, but loyal following of people who watched it in the 2000s.
* FirstInstallmentWins: You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody who watched or even remembers there being a spin-off. The fact that it was put on a once-a-week time slot for much of its first season probably did not help.
* FridgeHorror:
** A lot of people had this when considering the results of Clifford [[TooMuchInformation marking his territory]]. Thank goodness for the NobodyPoops trope present in most Creator/PBSKids shows at the time.
** The theme song states that Emily Elizabeth's love for Clifford turned him into a giant and forced the Howards to move to Birdwell Island. In the ''Clifford's Puppy Days'' spinoff, it's revealed that Emily Elizabeth had another pet besides Clifford, Daffodil the rabbit. Daffodil isn't seen or mentioned in ''Clifford the Big Red Dog'', leaving the viewer to assume that Clifford squished her. On the other hand, though, Daffodil could simply just still be in Emily Elizabeth's bedroom on Birdwell Island and just simply doesn't interact with Clifford anymore. Or, at the very least, she could have died of natural causes or illness.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: While the show was successful in the United States, it was very popular in Brazil, staying on Discovery Kids for many years and only getting the axe around 2015. It was even considered one of the flagship programs of the channel.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Now has its own [[Heartwarming/CliffordTheBigRedDog page]]
* MemeticMutation: "Do NOT shift into the Clifford universe. [[RonTheDeathEater Emily Elizabeth is extremely homophobic]]."[[labelnote:Explanation]]There is a Platform/TikTok trend called "reality shifting" where believers claim [[DaydreamBeliever they can "shift" into fictional universes in their sleep]]. One user claimed that when she visited the ''Clifford'' universe, Emily Elizabeth sicced Clifford on her. The video may have been satirical, since most "shifters" are in the ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' fandom.[[/labelnote]]
* {{Narm}}: The little we see of the ghost movie the Birdwell Island locals watch in "[[HalloweenEpisode Boo!]]" shows a scene wherein its protagonists clumsily bump into each other while a smiley-faced BedsheetGhost that looks as about as threatening as [[VideoGame/{{Undertale}} Napstablook]] approaches them. We then cut to the audience where even adults are shuddering like the really silly-looking scene that just happened was one of the most terrifying things ever. Given that it ''is'' a program aimed at young children, however, it's possible the goofy movie scene was meant to be a stand-in for something much scarier.
* OlderThanTheyThink: Quick show of hands, how many people even knew there was an AnimatedAdaptation prior to the 2000 TV series before reading the page description?
* SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel: Its overall atmosphere's very welcoming, as are the people of Birdwell Island to Clifford. Many life lessons are taught, Emily and Clifford's relationship really touches the heart, and the fact that Clifford makes friends with just about everyone he meets should tell you just how and why the series is so fondly remembered. It's just pure innocent slice of life fun.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** In the live-action video, one of the hosts is Arthur Howard, later to join the cast of ''Series/SquareOneTV''.
** Charley's dad, Samuel, is played by Creator/TerrenceCCarson, who would later become the voice of [[VideoGame/GodOfWar Kratos]] (not to be confused with the Kratos played by Emily's dad).
** Emily Elizabeth's best human friend, Nina, is [[Series/TheGeorgeLopezShow Carmen Lopez]], while her other friend and sometimes babysitter, Evan, is [[Series/ThatsSoRaven Eddie Thomas]].
** Puppy Clifford himself is better known as [[WesternAnimation/TheGhostAndMollyMcgee Libby]].
** In the 80's DirectToVideo series, Creator/AlysonCourt plays Emily Elizabeth.
* TheScrappy: Many fans preferred JerkWithAHeartOfGold Jetta from the 2000 series to AlphaBitch Florence from the 2021 film, which is why they find it satisfying when the latter is disgusted to be licked by Clifford, which caused her peers to laugh at her.
* TearJerker:
** In "The Big Sleepover", Clifford missing Emily Elizabeth and howling is really tear-jerking.
** In "Kibble Crook", T-Bone finds himself deeper and deeper in his lies about there being a Kibble Crook until he's all alone in a cave, sadly admitting the truth he should've told her from the start.
** "New Dog in Town" has a moment where Clifford first tries to approach and befriend T-Bone, but his big size scares him off. This prompts Clifford to believe T-Bone truly doesn't want to be his friend.
** "Friends Forever", where a young T-Bone has to deal with the fact that his friend, Hamburger, is moving away. Their goodbye is sad enough as is, even if you didn't grow up watching their [[Series/KenanAndKel voice]] [[Series/AllThat actors.]]
%%** Some of the songs in "Clifford's Really Big Movie" are pretty sad.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Many criticisms of the 2019 reboot stem from the fact that it's just too different. For example, the wildly different character designs, the lack of characters from the original such as T-Bone and Cleo, and its blandness and cheesiness compared to the original's depth, nuance, and self-awareness. Many parents admitted that their kids like the 2000 Clifford better (the 2000 show aired in reruns for many years even after it stopped making episodes).
* UnintentionalUncannyValley: Clifford in the 2021 film. His size and color may be perfectly acceptable in the cartoony books and animated media, but when translated into live-action, he just looks incredibly jarring and unsettling.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: The skunk in "The Dog Who Cried Wolf". He was just being friendly with Cleo, whose bow got stuck in the bush in the woods, and looked like he wanted to play with her, and she barked at him, which is why he sprayed her.
