Context YMMV / CharlieTheUnicorn

Go To

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Quite a lot, one of the most obvious being the proposition that the two unicorns are in fact a pair of sadistic psychopaths bent on psychologically torturing Charlie through their facade of being [[SickeninglySweet sickening cutesies]]. See the WildMassGuessing page for more. [[spoiler:More or less confirmed by the fourth episode, and definitively confirmed by the GrandFinale.]]
* AwesomeEgo: The millipede is vain, but she's quite a great singer.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
%%** The Millipede Song.
** The jazz song by the dolphin calling Charlie a downer, and its reprise by Charlie about how it's okay to be grumpy if the alternative is being a StepfordSmiler.
%%* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Too many to count.
* CatharsisFactor:
** It is ''immensely'' satisfying to see Pink and Blue so [[OutOfCharacterMoment genuinely shocked]] when Charlie manages to [[ThrowTheDogABone escape their murder attempt and has nothing bad happen to him]] in 4.
** In the GrandFinale, it is supremely satisfying to see [[spoiler:Charlie finally get revenge on Blue and Pink, who are revealed to be a pair of nigh-invincible Chaos Spirits using two dead unicorns as {{Meat Puppet}}s. After the pair have spent the series abusing Charlie and making fun of his constant grumpiness, it's doubly cathartic when Charlie literally weaponizes his anger against his tormentors, going against the instructions of Charlie the Ghost to use happy thoughts to power his magic and getting an even stronger result with his rage.]]
* CrossesTheLineTwice: In episode 4, Blue straight-up electrocuting Charlie while Pink shouts excuses is more... overt than before.
-->Taser him!\
He's resisting arrest!\
He's got a gun!\
({{Beat}})\
He's got another gun!
* DrinkingGame: Try watching all five of them in a row, taking a drink every time someone uses Charlie's name.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Norwell from the Grand Finale quickly grew in popularity for his hilariously passive-aggressive attitude. It's possibly for this reason that, despite being killed off in part 1 of the finale, he appears as a ghost in parts 2 thru 4 and gets his own song during the credits of part 4.
* EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory: A number of fans see the finale as a critique on capitalism and promotion of mental health, even seeing the entire series recontextualized as someone suffering from depression finally accepting the validity of his feelings in the face of a commercial society advocating false happiness. While there are an ample amount of [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything genuine parallels]] and Jason Steele himself is anti-capitalist, its unclear if this was intentional on a conscious level. Jason himself, however, seems to [[ApprovalOfGod approve of this theory]], discussing a similar video essay analysis of the finale with much praise on Twitter.
* {{Fanon}}: Since the reveal of the [[spoiler:Chaos Spirits and their ability to possess others and control reality]], behavioral traits that the pink and blue unicorns share with the title characters from Jason Steele's other series of shorts, ''Marshmallow People'', have led people to believe that the two are set in the same universe. And that the marshmallow people are, like Pink and Blue, [[spoiler:hosts to the Chaos Spirits]] that were killed during the 10,000 year interim between Nyx's death and Charlie's various "adventures". When asked, Steele has neither confirmed nor denied this.
* GeniusBonus: The sea goat thing from "Charlie the Unicorn 3" is a Capricorn, a mythological creature from [[Myth/ClassicalMythology Greek mythology]].
* HumorDissonance: "Charlie teh unicron" was created as a demonstration of why the fans shouldn't be in charge of the series, as it is a StylisticSuck version of the series with a tonal shift to edgy imageboard "lol random" humor which Jason Steele is positing as unfunny and a bad thing for the series, thus why he doesn't listen to fan suggestions for what to make. Many viewers actually find the "unicron" videos hysterical and well worth watching in their own way.
* JerkassWoobie: Charlie is rather surly and snarky, but it's difficult to not feel sorry for him with the crap he has to put up with. He's demoted to just plain [[TheWoobie woobie]] in ''Charlie Teh Unicron'', where he's less surly and snarky and more submissive and quiet.
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome:
** [[spoiler:Starfish's HeroicSacrifice in episode 4. Not only does he save Charlie from the duo's most twisted stunt yet, but he's the only person in the entire series to that point who has ever managed to get the better of them in any way.]]
** In the GrandFinale, [[spoiler:Charlie managing to seal away Pink and Blue by embracing his natural grumpiness instead of forcing himself to think insincere happy thoughts]].
* MemeticMutation: Damn near every line (mostly from Blue and Pink) from the short has become a catchphrase.
** "Charlieeee! Heeey, hey Charlieeee!" as well as just saying the name "Charlie" in that breathy voice.
** "Shun the non-believer!"
** "It's a liopleurodon, Charlie!" "A magical liopleurodon!"
** "Candy Mountain, Charlieeee!"
** "STARFISH REALLY LOVES YOU!!!"
** "Z!"
* MoralEventHorizon: The blue and pink unicorns cross it in ''Charlie The Unicorn 4'' when they [[spoiler:leave Charlie to be blown up on the moon, after [[ExactWords they promise that they will never bother him again]]]].
* NightmareFuel:
** The strange green fuzzy ''thing'' that guards the temple of the Banana King in the second short. Its bloody, lipless mouth and lidless eyes call to mind some sort of dreadful BodyHorror. It's even more unsettling that its entrance triggers a very long period of silence, during which Charlie starts to panic as he wonders whether he's the only one seeing this.
** Good grief, ''everything'' that is revealed about the pink and blue unicorns in the finale. [[spoiler:We find out that the unicorns themselves aren't even alive! They are actually dead bodies that are being possessed by a pair of malicious, extradimensional chaos spirits entombed in blocks of iron that enhance their supernatural powers. Over the last 10,000 years, they have all but eradicated civilization and, as a form of [[ForTheEvulz entertainment]], they have sought out individual survivors, tormented them in various ways, before ultimately killing them. Charlie is just their latest victim.]]
* SignatureSong: There's a reason why the "put a banana in your ear" song is featured as the main page picture.
* TearJerker:
** In the GrandFinale, when Nyx reveals to Charlie that the Pink and Blue Unicorns are actually [[spoiler:corpse puppets]], Charlie is genuinely distraught.
** The flashback to when Pink and Blue [[spoiler:got possessed. They were happily walking through the forest when they heard a strange noise and Pink went ahead to inspect it. Pink came back floating and brings up the singing Y from Candy Mountain, prompting Blue to panic and show genuine concern for their friend before swiftly getting possessed as well, their existence snuffed out with no fanfare in a second]].
--->'''Blue:''' ''(To [[spoiler:the now possessed]] Pink)'' Who are you? Who are you!?
* ViewerGenderConfusion:
** The unicorns are often mistaken for a PinkGirlBlueBoy when they're really ambiguous in canon.
--->'''Charlie:''' Guys? Guys? ...Or girls! I'm really not sure what you two are.
** The Millipede has a rather androgynous face, and calls herself a king in her BraggingThemeTune, but also mentions laying eggs and the backup singers use female pronouns.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotPolitical: In the grand finale, capitalism gets some criticism in the form of a CorruptCorporateExecutive and shortsightedly greedy ruler; however, earlier in the series, the hammer-and-sickle is parodied as a...creature with a Lenin beard proves to just be another [[spoiler:meat puppet]] trying to force Charlie into false positivity through nonsensical actions. The point ''might'' be that simply taking up a cause because others tell you to isn't the solution, but...well, YMMV as much as anything else in the series.
** [=YouTuber=] The Sin Squad's essay ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-X-WxZnqx0 Charlie the Unicorn: Capitalism as Apocalypse]]'' outlines the full length of anti-capitalist sentiment throughout the series (and especially the finale), including: Pink and Blue [[spoiler:being jetsetters who exploit everything around them for their own gains]]; the weasels' coveting of the Tower as [[spoiler:an analogue for USA imperialism, and how the country only wants power to benefit itself without using that power to make life better for anyone]]; the race of bugs [[spoiler:representing the wealthy only caring about a species-erasing problem once it affects their bottom line (e.g., climate change)]]; and how [[spoiler:capitalism will try to distract and wear people down with individualist suggestions (Feeling blue? Just get a better job! Buy this product! Put a banana in your ear!) and when that fails, outright telling them to shut up and just be happy because things are 'good' the way they are now (the "Everyone is Smiling" song.)]]
