* AluminumChristmasTrees:
** Disturbingly, a lot of the fake commercials advertise racist products that once were real ''after'' the Civil War. '''In the North.'''
** Abraham Lincoln gives a video interview in 1905, complete with sound. According to Kevin Willmott on the DVD commentary, 1905 was a year in which some of the earliest experiments with film and audio synchronization were made, and the quality is obviously as poor as one would expect for the turn of the century.
** Kennedy's televised debate speech about slavery and freedom? That was his actual speech.
** The program started by the C.S.A. to "train" Native Americans to act civilized was inspired by actual programs in the U.S., Canada, and Australia that took children from their families, put them in boarding schools whose aim was to take the "Native out of the Native" by teaching them that their cultural roots were primitive and evil. Even if they rejected their roots, they were not seen as civilized people, but more like trained animals that could act civilized.
** The C.S.A.'s increasingly authoritarian and anti-democratic turn was indeed mirrored by the Confederacy itself over the course of the Civil War, where embraced increasingly reactionary and authoritarian ideas, up to and including theocracy and monarchism, as it continued, likely as a reaction towards the increasingly-desperate war effort as an attempt by ruling factions to retain control of their disintegrating nation.
** [[spoiler: There are many stories of white supremacists like Fauntroy V discovering they have black ancestry]].
* {{Anvilicious}}: This movie is not particularly subtle in pointing out how racism is a ''horrible'' foundation on which to build a nation. While the Confederate States barely manages to survive into the 21st century, carving out a geographically huge slave empire in the process, it has become a pariah state with CreativeSterility and a declining economy. On the other hand, Canada, a nation that embraces diversity and human capital, not only prospers, but even outstrips the Confederate States, despite having ''far less'' population and land. Even John Ambrose Fauntroy V, one of the beneficiaries of the Confederate States' racist system whose family is arguably the driving force behind the Confederate States' extreme white supremacism and nationalism even into the 21st century, [[LaserGuidedKarma finds his reputation destroyed when he himself accused of carrying "Negro" blood]], regardless of whether this claim is true.
* HarsherInHindsight: In 2019, the New York Times began the highly controversial [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_1619_Project 1619 Project]], reframing the history of the United States through the lens of slavery and black oppression. Inevitable parallels to the film cropped up.
** This line from the trailer becomes especially harsh: "Slavery, like nothing else, is what defines us as a people, as a nation." The 1619 Project is basically an exploration of that statement not as a premise for an alternate timeline, but as a lens through which to interpret the United States' whole history.
* JerkassWoobie: As much of a racist {{Jerkass}} Fauntroy is, you can't help but feel a little sorry for him as he discusses the pain he felt when his father was assassinated by JBU[[note]]John Brown Underground[[/note]] operatives.
* MisaimedFandom: The purpose of the mockumentary is to discuss the issue of racism in real-life American history from an unconventional angle (namely an AlternateHistory angle), but some viewers (both [[CulturalCringe American]] and [[UsefulNotes/MisplacedNationalism non-American]]) go beyond that, applauding the documentary for "exposing the real United States as the EvilEmpire that it truly is."
* {{Narm}}: Parts of the Fauntroy jingle that weren't offensive were this, such as when they vow to "crush... evildoers".
* OlderThanTheyThink: Yes, the word "Aryan" (when used to describe a person of Northern European ancestry) ''did'' exist before the Nazis got their mitts on it. In fact, it is used in precisely this context in D. W. Griffith's ''Film/{{The Birth of a Nation|1915}}'', which ''The Hunt for Dishonest Abe'' is an obvious CaptainErsatz for.
* SignatureScene: The infamous [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jXfcpnYgu8 "Confederate Family Insurance"]] commercial. In fact, the fake commercials are generally fall under this since a lot of people who haven't seen the movie, especially on YouTube, at least know these particular scenes without knowing it came from this film.
* SpecialEffectsFailure: One of the opening shots is of a now-CSA-branded NASA rocket taking off, edited from actual footage. They did a fine job replacing the "U" with a "C", but the font doesn't match -- the "S" has straight, squared-off sides like Eurostile while the "C" is perfectly round like Helvetica.
* TearJerker:
** The scene where an aged Abraham Lincoln is interviewed shortly before his death in Canada. The narration shortly thereafter states that, a century afterwards, Lincoln is only ever known as "the man who lost the War of Northern Aggression." Somehow, being assassinated at the age of 56 [[FateWorseThanDeath wasn't so bad]].
-->''"[[MyGreatestFailure I failed to see it...]] the abolitionists understood what the consequences would be. They knew it was always about the Negro. But I was blind. Now I see; I see what [[OppressiveStatesOfAmerica our once great country has become]]. [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone I only wish that I had truly cared for the Negro, truly cared for his freedom, for his equality]]. I used him, now I am used. Now, I too am a Negro... without a country. I pray that someday the colored people of Confederate America will be free. A nation stained with the blood of injustice cannot stand. I only regret that I shall not live to see it fall."''
** An incident where a slave named Casey Brown brutally killed the two white children in her charge in 1875. She admits that she did care for them, being only innocent children... but she couldn't stand to be the surrogate mother after her own children had been sold off as chattel anymore, and it drove her to a psychotic break.
-->''"It hurts me to my soul that I took them children's lives. I loved them children, I swear I did. I had me three children once ago. They was took off and sold from me. Them white babies wasn't my children, and I wasn't they momma. No woman can be momma who ain't free."''
