* AccidentalAesop: "Fraternity Row" has the standard aesop of taking education seriously that many episodes had, but this time it finally get through to Shawn ''why'' when he fails an assignment he genuinely worked hard on because he didn't have the knowledge to put his writing talent to good use. After this episode he takes his education more seriously and his love of writing even leads him to fall for Angela. This sends the message that some people may be hard to get through to, but aren't lost causes.
* {{Adorkable}}:
** Cory is not a total dork, but despite his awkwardness and neurotics, he means well and occasionally becomes a CluelessChickMagnet.
** Minkus is a quirky, geeky TeenGenius with NerdGlasses.
* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: Rider Strong was so convinced that he would become a star working opposite Creator/JulieAndrews on her sitcom ''Julie'', that when it was canceled after only six episodes, he became so pessimistic that he was convinced that his next series gig, a children's sitcom, wouldn't make it past the pilot phase. The show ran for ''seven'' seasons and made Strong famous for playing Shawn Hunter.
* AngstWhatAngst: During "Can I Help To Cheer You?", Eric having to let Tommy go so he can be adopted by other people is treated as heart-breaking and emotionally devastating, as he spent enough time with Tommy to grow to love him. But by the very next episode, he's back to normal {{Cloudcuckoolander}} behavior and none of the following episodes acknowledge it.
* ArcFatigue: The love triangle between Jack, Eric, and Rachel. Not only did it have a very unsatisfying end (Rachel hooks up with Jack, Eric moves out to give them their space, Rachel and Jack break up, Rachel kicks Jack out of the apartment so that the newly single Angela and Topanga can snatch up their place) but it put a rather deep damage into Eric and Jack's friendship as well as Eric's psyche ("RACHEL!").
* BizarroEpisode: For a normally grounded show, "The Witches of Pennbrook" sticks out, with a coven of witches trying to sacrifice Shawn and Jack, and a deranged pilot putting Cory and Topanga in danger, and ending with a crossover with ''Series/SabrinaTheTeenageWitch'' ...which carried into the next episode "No Guts, No Cory"
* CrazyIsCool: Eric on a good day. The dude managed to commandeer a high profile wedding as a favor to Topanga and Cory and not get caught until after it was over.
* DesignatedVillain: In "If You Can't Be With The One You Love", Shawn starts drinking and [[CompressedVice rapidly descends into alcoholism]]. While everyone else is trying to more or less stage an intervention, Angela grabs an increasingly agitated Shawn by the arm and starts tugging and he shoves her out of the way. This is clearly meant to be Shawn exhibiting the same abusive behavior as Chet, meant to underscore the "lesson" on alcoholism running in the family, but it failed to land for several people since Shawn's reaction to push away the person grabbing him isn't an uncommon one even among sober people.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Mr. Feeny, written as a stodgy SternTeacher (albeit with HiddenDepths), gradually endeared himself both to his students and to viewers with his low-key, no-nonsense hypercompetent nature, his valuable and well-delivered life lessons, his absolute devotion to his discipline of teaching and, most importantly, his unshakable and unconditional (but ''never'' inappropriate) paternal love for his core students, all grounded by Creator/WilliamDaniels' rock-steady, assured, and gravitas-laden performance. Feeny's reputation continues to live on decades after the show ended its run, with retrospectives and best-of lists routinely anointing him as the greatest teacher in the history of television, and among the best ''in all of fiction''. It says something that he stands head-and-shoulders above Mr. Turner, who is absolutely no slouch as a teacher himself. Not bad for a role Creator/WilliamDaniels nearly turned down for fear that it might mock teachers.
** Mr. Turner is ironically a retroactive one. He was introduced as a gambit to entice older viewers to tune in. It didn't work, and Turner eventually got phased out of the show. Despite that, he still remains one of the most popular characters of the series with the main fanbase, who eventually grew up to become the college-age demographic the showrunners were trying to target. He was even brought back in the spin-off ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld''.
** Plays With Squirrels, Eric's BadFuture self who became a hermit after the group's friendships became irreparable in "Seven the Hard Way". Despite only being in one episode, and one of the most divisive episodes of the show to boot, Mr. Squirrels is popular enough with the fandom that ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld'' reveals that Eric still uses the persona to mediate disputes in the town he's the mayor of.
* FairForItsDay: Shawn and Angela's relationship was considered by many as progressive for its time, considering that race was never an issue or a complication for the two, despite them [[BlackGalOnWhiteGuyDrama being an interracial couple.]] Obviously, this can be [[RoseTintedNarrative criticized]] as unrealistic given the setting of the show (early to mid 90s Philadelphia) and viewed as an attempt to whitewash race and issues of race almost entirely from the show. To hammer this point home, similar family sitcoms with majority black casts and made for a black audience around the same time like Series/TheFreshPrinceOfBelAir, [[https://freshprince.fandom.com/wiki/Guess_Who%27s_Coming_to_Marry%3F more realistically]] portrayed how society and family can and often ''do'' react to black-white interracial relationships, i.e. with rejection, wariness, unease, awkwardness, cringeworthy overcompensation, etc. Angela being the TokenBlack didn't help matters either. That said, the fact that the show never reduced Shawn and Angela's relationship to just racial issues allowed the show to develop both characters much further, preventing either from falling into any singular stereotype easily, and making their relationship seem just as real and important as Cory and Topanga's. One interesting caveat: whenever Shawn and Angela weren't seeing each other, they ''exclusively'' dated within their race. Given the lack of black people on the show ever, this is more noticeable for Angela than it is for Shawn. Another interesting thing of note is how Eric dated an Asian girl in "Teacher's Bet" and they handled it differently with Cory and Morgan not thinking twice about the girl's race yet it being made clear not everyone thought the same.
* FandomEnragingMisconception: No, Cory did NOT convince Topanga to pass up Yale to marry him. Everyone from Mr. Feeny, to Mrs. Matthews, to Cory himself told Topanga to go to Yale, but she made the decision on her own to give up Yale to be with Cory. Every other character thought it was a bad idea after the fact as well, even the ones who didn't tell her to be supportive. The finale even reveals that even then, that's ''not'' why she gave up Yale. It's because she didn't think she was good enough for them and her love for Cory just gave her an excuse not to go.
* GrowingTheBeard: The High School Years, starting from Season 2 through Season 5, tend to be viewed as the highest point of the series quality-wise.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** The BadFuture in "Seven the Hard Way" depicts Shawn traveling the world as a writer and photographer alone. In ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld'', this is exactly where he ends up.
** Angela's status as the cast TokenBlack becomes this in light of [[https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2020/07/09/boy-meets-world-trina-mcgee-opens-up-racism-she-experienced/5410217002/ the racism Trina [=McGee-Davis=] faced on set in the form of lack of support and directly from several of the cast members]], most specifically Creator/WillFriedle, Creator/DanielleFishel, and Creator/BenSavage. The two former have publicly apologized and have since reconciled with [=McGee-Davis=], but the jury is still out on Ben.
*** An entire episode in season 6 is dedicated to Angela pointing out to Cory that they are TheFriendsWhoNeverHang and Cory adamantly pushing back on this that becomes a borderline case of this trope in light of all of this.
** In a season 1 episode, Shawn goes on a fishing trip with Alan in Cory's stead. Cory accuses Shawn of stealing his dad, Shawn calls Alan "Dad" just to troll Cory and the whole thing is played for laughs. Cut to season 2's finale, and the gag takes on a [[ParentalAbandonment sadder tone]]. Then when we get to season 6...hoo boy.
** In the episode "Turkey Day", when Shawn suggests having Thanksgiving dinner with the Matthews and his mother supports the idea, Chet says, [[spoiler: "Over my big, dead body."]] [[KilledOffForReal Ouch]].
** In a [[http://www.livingthedreamshow.com/will-friedle/ 2015 podcast with actor Phil Morris]], Creator/WillFriedle, in the last 10 minutes, opened up about his ongoing struggles with anxiety and panic attacks. He still suffers panic attacks almost daily and said that this forced him to quit on screen acting, until his RoleReprise as Eric Matthews on ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld'' that same year. He was on medication towards the end of ''Boy Meets World'', which caused his weight gain in the last season, but he also said that being medicated was the only reason he was able to get in front of a camera at all. It was never Friedle's intent, but knowing this makes watching Eric's weight gain being made fun of in "She's having my Baby Back Ribs" kind of awkward.
* HeartwarmingInHindsight: Alan's mid life crisis in "Cutting The Cord" about not wanting to be seen as an "old man" by the new baby becomes this when, in ''"Girl Meets Home for the Holidays"'', Josh says that he had Alan as a father at his best.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: All of the cast got the chance to show off their dramatic chops but the best example is probably Will Friedle. Because his character was often the silliest his emotional scenes had the most impact. In "Eric Hollywood," he makes a pretty decent Romeo.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** In one episode in season two Eric has a lucky towel that he calls "towelie", which is also the name of a talking, drug-addicted towel on ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark''. Especially since later on in the show's run after ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' had premiered Eric started making a bunch of references to it.
** Cory's last name is Matthews and Topanga's last name is Lawrence. In the fifth season Shawn met his half brother Jack, who is played by Creator/MatthewLawrence. Talk about a coincidence.
*** On that same line, Will Friedle's middle name is Alan, the same as the Matthews patriarch.
** In the season 1 episode "Teacher's Bet", Cory trades places with Mr. Feeny for a week and realizes being a teacher is hard work. Guess what career path he's chosen in the sequel?
** Similarly, Cory has a line in "Class Pre-union" that's a lot funnier given where he ended up in the sequel: "You're gonna grow up to be your dad, you're gonna grow up to be a Feeny clone, am I the only one left here with some vision?"
** “Teacher’s Bet” starts with Shawn, Cory and Minkus marveling over Barry Bonds’s 6-year, $43 million contract. Baseball contracts have ballooned so much that the current largest contract in pro sports (signed by Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels) pays ten times as much over twice as long.
** One episode has Minkus tell Topanga she’s the future mother of his children, which means imagining Topanga as Farkle’s mother.
** Eric breaks up with one of his GirlOfTheWeek who is a musician, she gets really popular by writing breakup songs about their relationship. A [[Music/TaylorSwift certain artist]] would later become quite infamous for this.
** In "Easy Street," Shawn gets a job working at the docks and claims to have unloaded "the same Turkish freighter that brought in the ''Outbreak'' monkey!" He the rubs his hands on Cory's face and says he's taking him down with him. This is a lot funnier if you've seen ''CabinFever''.
** After Alan quit his job, he was looking at other career opportunities, one of which was marketing a pet odor eliminator called "Poopourri" which was written off as a stupid idea. Come 2023, an actual product with the same concept called "Pooph" was introduced to the market. Ahead of his time perhaps?
** Some network executives must have taken notice of Eric's "Good Looking Guy" TV show idea, because the number of police procedurals starring {{Fair Cop}}s has gone ''way'' up since the mid-90s.
--->'''Eric:''' All day long I've been watching crimes on TV solved by old guys, by fat guys, by guys in wrinkled raincoats; so naturally, it occurs to me, what this world needs is ''Eric Matthews: Good Looking Detective''.
** Creator/RiderStrong [[https://twitter.com/RiderStrong/status/51298346744287232?lang=en pointed out on Twitter]] that the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOpgKz9y9fA season 4 opening sequence]], which involves Cory jumping into a convertible with his friends, resembles the memetically popular "Music/{{Friday}}" music video.
** "Picket Fences" had a running gag where Cory and Topanga were really fixated on the nook of their dream house. Girl Meets World has two nooks as the regular discussion place for the characters, one in the living room, and the other in Riley's bedroom.
** In "Angela's Ashes", Cory reads a report of a person who died from a pigeon flying into their mouth, 1000 Ways To Die would later use the same concept
*** From the same episode, Eric singing "Ooh Child" becomes a lot funnier when he later came to voice Star-Lord in the [[WesternAnimation/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2015 Guardians of The Galaxy TV series]], who sang this number in the [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014 live-action film]].
** In the episode featuring the famous Plays with Squirrels persona of the BadFuture, Cory tells to Topanga to not tell Eric (aka Plays with Squirrels) that they have a daughter. [[Series/GirlMeetsWorld Years later, they do have Riley.]] [[CallBack Whom he also calls]] [[RunningGag his "niche"]].
** Cory describes in "The Father/Son Game" his usual Saturday routine, which includes getting up to watch ''WesternAnimation/XMenTheAnimatedSeries''. At the time, that show aired on [[Creator/FoxKids a competing network]]; now, both shows are owned by Disney and featured on [[Creator/DisneyPlus the same streaming service]].
** Devoted Christian Creator/CandaceCameronBure, playing a satanistic witch, trying to kill Shawn and Jack with magic.
* HoYay:
** Cory and Shawn, so very much. It's even joked about and parodied in-universe in later seasons and the sequel.
** ''Jack and Eric'', to the point where a running gag of the [=WWII=] episode is Jack insisting that Eric is just his roommate. They've also supposedly have seen each other naked several times and Jack has kissed Eric's boo-boos as well as the many times that they've hugged and Eric has said that if he were a woman, he'd think Jack were swell. When Eric introduces Feeny to Jack, it's like a girl introducing her new boyfriend to her father.
--> Feeny: Why doesn't he look at me?
--> Jack: I'm afraid, Sir.
* InformedWrongness: In “First Girlfriends Club”, Shawn is kidnapped by [[WomanScorned three of his ex-girlfriends]] because of his previous womanizing ways. Only problem is, one of the girls was a manipulative harpy who tried to [[FriendVersusLover force Shawn and Cory to stop being friends]] and another [[TheVamp seduced Shawn]] to help her friend seduce Cory. Only Dana, who we did see Shawn profess real feelings for, had a genuine beef if he did indeed drop her as unceremoniously as she claims.
** In the subplot of "Cyrano", the subplot revolves around Amy being mad at Alan for getting her a trash compactor for their anniversary. However, Alan points out he got it for her because Amy had wanted one for a while so it was actually a very thoughtful gift, yet she's upset because it wasn't something akin to expensive jewelry. That said, this also touches on a long-running debate commonly divided along gender lines for BoringButPractical gifts vs. more romantic and/or flashy expressions of love.
* JerkassWoobie:
** Jack, in "No Such Thing As A Sure Thing." True, it's his douche-season, but you can't help but feel sorry for the guy as you watch him struggle with his gambling addiction, even if it is PlayedForLaughs.
** Topanga was needlessly harsh towards Cory at the beginning of season 7, but she was also visibly distressed and emotionally shattered by her parents' divorce after years of looking up to them as a shining example of undying love.
** Angela was very rude towards Shawn after their breakup, but when it's revealed why she broke up with him (her mother walked out on her and she felt she'd do the same to Shawn and hurt him), it's really hard not to feel bad for her.
** Harley Keiner becomes this in "Sister Theresa" when you learn his background. His father walked out on his family for another woman on his sister's birthday, his mother is implied to be an alcoholic, and he is the surrogate father figure to his sister who is already troubled due to the lack of a proper parental figure in her life.
* MemeticMutation:
** "UNDAPANTS!!!!"
** FEENAY! FEE-HEE-HEE-HEE-FEENAY!
* {{Misblamed}}: Rachel received some flack from the fandom due to the events of ''The War'' and ''Seven the Hard Way'' kicking off due to her banning Cory and Shawn from her dorm room after they parked in her spot. Except, [[StrawmanHasAPoint the parking spot was reserved due to her being R.A.]]. When they retaliated by ''([[RuleOfFunny some]][[FridgeLogic how]])'' [[DisproportionateRetribution parking her car up in her room]], she went to report it to Mr. Feeny, who merely laughed it off and borderline congratulated [[KarmaHoudini the pair]] for the prank, which she herself lampshades as she expected him to act [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure appropriately]] considering all she heard about him. Even though she and Angela revenge-pranked them back (with Feeny turning a blind eye yet again), it was Cory and Shawn's last prank of hanging up a full-size semi-nude photo of her in the student union that went too far--by today's standards it could even be considered a form of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenge_porn revenge porn]] in some states--and endangered the whole group's friendship.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Crossed when the bullies vandalize Mr. Feeny's house, and later threaten to do the same at the school. All because they didn't want to study.
** In-universe, Cory and Shawn blowing up a revealing picture of Rachel and putting it on display in the Student Union was considered this, as before that they had merely been in a escalating prank war. Even they acknowledged that they went too far.
* NeverLiveItDown: "For Love And Apartments" is one of the least popular episodes for Rachel's infamous moment where she forced Eric and Jack out of the apartment they let her live in when Shawn moved out and resorted to violence to do so. What makes this unfortunate is ran side by side with Cory's ActOfTrueLove by trying to reconcile Topanga's parents.
* NightmareFuel: “The Psychotic Episode”, full stop. As if Cory's nightmares about killing Shawn weren't bad enough, we have Eric's subplot with the crazy roommate ''keeping the stuffed corpses of his dead family members around''...and it's implied ''he killed all his previous roommates!'' Yeah, it's no wonder the Disney Channel's not too keen on this episode.
* OneTruePairing:
** You would be hardpressed to find a fan of this series who would argue against Cory/Topanga and Cory/Shawn as a platonic OTP, given that the show even characterizes them in this way, {{retcon}}ning Cory and Topanga's first meeting several times to play up the whole "fated to be together" narrative and Shawn even being involved in Cory and Topanga's wedding.
** Prior to ''Series/GirlMeetsWorld'', Angela/Shawn was the undeniable romantic OTP for Shawn. Afterwards, there's something of a BrokenBase regarding this, since Shawn ends up marrying Maya's mom, Katy. Some say Katy is the better pair, others (especially a large chunk of black fans) still prefer Angela and [[FanonDiscontinuity refuse to even acknowledge]] the sequel series.
* PeripheryDemographic: An interesting example, in that the producers were clearly ''trying'' to attract one (namely, young adult males), as the plethora of [[ParentalBonus parental bonuses]], [[ActorAllusion bringing on old actors]] (though they often [[PlayingAgainstType played against type]]), [[ShoutOut references to]] ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButthead'' and later ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'', the endless LampshadeHanging and [[BreakingTheFourthWall winks to the audience]], and the ''entire existence'' of Mr. Williams and plotlines revolving around he and Mr. Turner all demonstrate... but they weren't really successful. Today, the show is fondly remembered by the actual target audience, Generation Y, as [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative one of the most clever and creative shows to ever be part of the TGIF block]]. Of course, it's also popular with younger audiences who have seen reruns. But it never really caught on with the Gen-X hipster types.
* RetroactiveRecognition:
** [[HighSchoolHustler Griff Hawkins]] was played by Creator/AdamScott, who became more well known in the late 2000s because of his roles in works such as ''Film/StepBrothers'' and ''Series/ParksAndRecreation''.
** This show had a whole lot of this. Creator/MarlaSokoloff, Nikki Cox, Keri Russell, Mena Suvari, Creator/BrittanyMurphy, Creator/CharismaCarpenter, Creator/JulieBenz, Creator/ShaneWest, Kristanna Loken, Creator/MaggieLawson, Creator/LindaCardellini, Nia Vardalos, and Creator/ElisabethHarnois all had small parts on the show before becoming more well-known for other roles.
** Creator/LeeNorris (Minkus) would go on to play Mouth in ''Series/OneTreeHill''.
** Creator/WillFriedle went on to a fairly prolific voice-over career. Some people are no doubt still surprised to learn that "Cory's goofy older brother" became [[WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond Terry McGinnis]] and [[WesternAnimation/KimPossible Ron Stoppable]], among others.
** Ethan Suplee was one of the high school enforcers. Today, he's likely better known as the big guy from ''Film/RememberTheTitans'', [[{{Film/Mallrats}} the guy who kept trying to see the sailboat]], or [[Series/MyNameIsEarl Earl's brother]].
* RuleOfCool: The high school wrestling match in THE THRILLA IN PHILA becoming a huge local media event (emceed by singer Robert Goulet and attended by Yasmine Bleeth) is definitely an example. It makes no sense in/out of context but it is fun.
* TheScrappy: While Rachel wasn't all that popular before, she earned ire from the fanbase at start of season 7 for pretty much kicking Jack out of the apartment following their break-up over the summer, leaving both Jack and Eric (Who had previously moved out to give Jack and Rachel space after they started dating, but had just been asked to move back in by Jack) homeless as she had invited Topanga and Angela to move in following their own break-ups [[PoorCommunicationKills and misinterpreting something Jack had said as his intention to move out]]; it's especially harsh because [[{{Hypocrite}} her first introduction was when she's kicked out of her own apartment after breaking up with her boyfriend]] and Jack and Eric decide to take her in. From there until the end of the season ([[GrandFinale And series]]), she never really recovered her popularity because she came off as a self-centered bitch[[note]]Ironically, "Seven The Hard Way" actually has Rachel point out how little she actually talks about herself[[/note]]. She also receives a lot of flack due to the "[[BreakingTheFellowship The War]]" and "[[BreakingTheFellowship Seven The Hard Way]]" which all started because [[DisproportionateRetribution she banned Cory and Shawn from her and Angela's dorm room for stealing her parking spot]].
** What didn't help her character was that unlike Jack (who contributed to being character development for both Eric and Shawn) and Angela (who helped Shawn be able to open up his heart as well as be a friend to both Cory and Topanga), Rachel's purpose really only seemed to be to drive a constant wedge between Eric and Jack's friendship as well as a love triangle that had an overall unsatisfactory ending. Both Jack and Angela had their own personal story arcs at some point but Rachel seemed to just be around to be fanservice. Tellingly, Rachel did not return for SequelSeries ''Girl Meets World'', one of only two series regulars who failed to do so (alongside the short-lived Mr. Williams from season 3), although Eric claims to still be in touch with her.
** Mr. Sorrell from Season 3 is universally despised for being a corrupt teacher in every sense of the word in a school where all the other teachers actually care about their job, and not even in a way that was funny. Thankfully his stint was short-lived.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: At least in regards to "The War" and "Seven The Hard Way" - It was her ''reserved'' parking spot due to her position as R.A. and Shawn deciding to poke her with a stick.
* SeasonalRot:
** Season 7. It had a few good episode and some very memorable moments (i.e. "Plays With Squirrels"), but it was not very good overall. It had many [[DenserAndWackier wacky and cartoonish]] plotlines that didn't fit with the series, tons of MoodWhiplash between the wacky plotlines and serious plotlines, {{Flanderization}} up the wazoo, especially with Eric who went from being ditzy to being mentally insane, and just not as many laughs to be had. Fortunately, this was the final season and the finale ended the series on a good note.
** Season 3. The majority of episodes are filler episodes with no plot development until the end of the season. That being said, it does give exposition to the beloved Season 4 so that does earn it a lot of favor. Nonetheless, it is regarded as the weakest season in the golden era of Seasons 2-6.
* TearJerker: Now has [[TearJerker/BoyMeetsWorld its own page]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: When Angela tells Rachel Topanga is pregnant in "She's Having My Baby Back Ribs", Rachel theorizes that's why Topanga and Cory got married. This would've made an excellent subplot or plot point in the main plot, yet it's never expanded upon.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: "Picket Fences" has Cory and Topanga being offered an $80,000 dollar house under the condition Alan and Amy co-sign the loan. Adjusted to inflation, that's $147,500 for a well-furnished house that looks up to code. After the 2008 recession and crippling inflation in UsefulNotes/TheNew20s, a house that nice at four times that price is unrealistic.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: In the first Christmas Special, Cory is vilified for giving Shawn a Christmas gift and expecting thanks for it rather than to help Shawn. The problem his, he did in fact give it to help Shawn because he felt bad his dad lost his job. Cory's anger at Shawn not being grateful was just said it a fit of rage after Shawn accused him of butting in his personal matters when it was Alan who told Cory. Feeny more just walked in at the wrong time and Cory was MadeOutToBeAJerkass.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Topanga in "A Very Topanga Christmas". We're supposed to feel sorry for her because Cory walks out on her on Christmas Eve, but the fact is that he did so because she bulldozed over his family traditions [[ItsAllAboutMe in favor of hers]] to the point of being a ''very'' inconsiderate house guest. She even makes Alan drive to Vermont to get a live Christmas tree in the middle of the night, not to mention waking Cory up at 3 A.M. because she wanted to talk (and then saying that she looks forward to doing it all the time). No wonder Cory bails!
** It comes up again when her parents get divorced and she breaks up with Cory purely because of the ''chance'' that things are going to go wrong since "love can die." Cory goes through absolute hell and even tries to mediate between her parents just for her (sadly it doesn't work) and Shawn even [[WhatTheHellHero calls her out on her behavior]] but she still persists on sulking in her bad mood, going so far as to ''kick Jack and Eric out of their own apartment'' through physical force while Rachel and Angela cheer her on. Rather than come across as a young woman scared to trust again, Topanga comes across as more of a petulant child that has to have her mother to tell her not give things up between her and Cory. Though to be entirely fair this is acknowledged InUniverse in the next two episodes where Cory points out her irrational thinking is why Angela is afraid to commit to Shawn then Angela and Feeny have to tell her how she's not doing herself any favors by pushing Cory away.
** During their other two breakups she often acts like she has a right to tell him how he's supposed to cope. In Season 3, she turns him down because he was dating a lot of girls during their breakup. Cory defends he did it to get his mind off her and from what we saw, these girls would dump him for being hung up on Topanga. In Season 5, while Cory had no right to drink underage, she expresses disgust with how he acted at the party. He actually acted quite civil only peeing on a cop car after the party was over, and the way he acted before drinking was pushing people away with his constant griping.
** In "The War", a prank war between the group begins, with the breaking point being Cory and Shawn exposing a racy photo of Rachel in the school commons. Yeah, it is a dick move, but the problem is Rachel had orchestrated a plot that involved glueing Cory, Shawn and Topanga to their desks, covering them in honey and sicking a literal grizzly bear on them. Yeah, they publicly humiliated Rachel, but her prank could have lead to them actually dying.
* ValuesDissonance:
** While not as bad as other examples from its era, the show did have some jokes that could be considered homophobic or transphobic by modern standards.
** Season 5 ends with Shawn deciding to take a job offer over going to college. When the show got UnCancelled, he changed his mind to keep him in the show. Luckily for him, Jack's rich stepfather had no qualms about paying Shawn's tuition due to how close he and Jack are, but he didn't learn that till halfway through Season 6. Nowadays, him going into needless debt despite barely getting by financially as is (his father made him move out before he graduated high school because living with Jack had more to offer than he could) would be an incredibly bad decision when the job was a good entry into his desired field.
* ValuesResonance: In the episode "Picket Fences" Cory tries to buy a starter home for him and Topanga so they can leave their ramshackle apartment despite barely having any money. The realtor draws up a special mortgage plan for them so they can buy the house but the plan requires signatures from the parents, and Mr. and Mrs. Matthews refuse to sign it because they don't think Cory and Topanga will be able to make the payments. The moral of the episode is that you need to work to earn what you buy and not rely on others for help. This episode aired in 1999, many years before the late 2000s economic recession which was caused in part by this kind of financial behavior: young couples buying homes they couldn't afford through subprime mortgage payments.
** “Chick Like Me” is still relevant in the 2010s and new 2020s due to the subject matter of consent and how women are treated in a patriarchal society.
** “Everybody Loves Stuart” has aged well due to more awareness of sexual assault, especially men using their power of authority to prey on victims.
** Cory’s lesson about prejudice still existing and learning from the past in “Teacher’s Bet” is still relevant due to the rise of white supremacy and fascism in the US in the 2020s.
* TheWoobie:
** Shawn. After CharacterDevelopment and BreakTheCutie, it seems pretty reasonable that he'll join a cult in one episode to make himself happier. The later seasons didn't help with his development with Angela only for the two to [[spoiler: break up due to Angela feeling she would up and leave him like her mother did (not helped by Topanga breaking up with Cory as well due to her DespairEventHorizon following her parents's break up)]]. It doesn't get better with ''Girl Meets World'' either.
** Eric, a ''LOT'' of bad stuff just keeps happening to the poor guy and no one ever takes him seriously. Not even himself.
** Cory could sometimes be this in the show's early seasons, particularly a first-season episode where his status as middle child and only making second string on the basketball team make him feel worthless and unloved. The later seasons ampted it up with his devotion to Topanga and nearly [[spoiler: ''losing her twice'', the first being because some girl kissed him despite knowing he was dating Topanga and the second time being that Topanga was so distraught by her parents's divorce that she didn't see Cory and her lasting long]].
