* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Baxter's fiance is introduced and forgotten immediately as he proposes to Susan. Lampshaded as well, because Porter ushers her off-screen.
* CrazyIsCool: Z-Man and Ashley's respective brands of off-kilter behavior really make them stand out and they are often referred to as the most entertaining characters because of it.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Ashley St. Ives is a supporting character who drops out of the film when there are still nearly 50 minutes of runtime left, but is considered to steal every scene she's in with her hilariously hammy lines. It certainly doesn't hurt that she's drop-dead sexy, either.
* FoeYayShipping: There exists fanfiction shipping Harris and Z-Man together in Archive of Our Own, never mind that Harris resents Z-Man for taking over the Carrie Nations and the bulk of their interactions is them glaring intensely at each other (actually, it might be ''because'' of that last part that the shipping exists).
* HarsherInHindsight: Z-Man, the eccentric music producer, was based on real-life music producer Music/PhilSpector. At the end of the movie, Z-Man goes on a murder rampage. Three decades later, Phil Spector himself was revealed to have committed a murder. One of Z-Man's victims, [[spoiler:Roxanne]], is even killed with a gunshot to the mouth, the same way that Phil Spector would murder Lana Clarkson in 2003.
* HilariousInHindsight: With Creator/RogerEbert as the film's writer, the fact that his future TV co-host Creator/GeneSiskel gave it zero stars and put it on his 20 Worst Films of 1970 list. He even took a nice veiled shot at Ebert in the review.
-->"Boredom aplenty is provided by a screenplay which for some reason has been turned over to a screenwriting neophyte."
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: The raves.
* {{Moe}}: Casey's shy personality and big, sad doe eyes make her eminently endearing.
* MorePopularSpinOff: It enjoys a better reputation than its basis ''Film/ValleyOfTheDolls'', to the point that Creator/TheCriterionCollection only bought the latter because that was the condition for acquiring this one.
* NightmareFuel: Drug orgy party with green filter while "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" plays in the background. Also [[spoiler: Z-Man topless]].
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/PamGrier made her film debut as a partygoer. She is notoriously difficult to find in the film, though (Ebert himself admitted he never could), with some positing that whatever scene she was in ended up getting deleted. She is nonetheless depicted on the Criterion cover (she's top-right).
* SignatureLine:
** "This is my happening and it freaks me out!" This is Z-Man rejoicing at one of his large wild parties. It went on to be quoted in ''Film/AustinPowers''.
** Immediately before that, there is Kelly's thought on Z-Man's happenings: "In a scene like this, you get a contact high!"
** And then there's this aggressively flirty and ambiguous line from Ashley to Harris: "I'd like to strap you on sometime." The line was later reused in Russ Meyer's ''Film/Up1976''.
** Z-Man's delirious declaration to Lance when the latter spurns him: "Ere this night does wane, you will drink the black sperm of my vengeance!"
* SoBadItsGood: An ingenious parody.
* {{Squick}}: Z-Man revealing that [[spoiler:he (she?) has female breasts]].
* TheWoobie: Poor Casey. She is the loneliest member of the Carrie Nations due to her lesbianism, gets insulted and harassed by Porter Hall, and never seems entirely comfortable or happy even when the band becomes a hit. Her friendship with Harris is strained after an ill-advised sexual encounter under the influence, making her pregnant, and the ensuing abortion is traumatic for her. She finally finds some fulfillment in her relationship with Roxanne, [[spoiler:only to die horribly in Z-Man's rampage.]]
