* AngstWhatAngst: Juanita never has a moment where she reflects on the death of her older son, who she lost in a similar conflict to the one between Jody and Melvin. It's Jody who's the one constantly haunted by it.
** There are two deleted scenes that explore this.
* {{Anvilicious}}: The movie is hardly subtle about its message its critique of young black men living irresponsibly at such an age. In fact, it actually opens with a scene depicting a nude, fully grown Jody in a womb as Tyrese Gibson's voiceover gives his monologue as seen on the main page. The scene ends with Jody screaming as the womb shakes and he's about to be born, symbolizing his need to grow up and leave the nest.
* DiagnosedByTheAudience: In private, Jody often has fantasies and nightmares of scaring the people he loves and dying in the streets. In his nightmare, as he uncovers the victim of a shooting, he finds that it was him who was shot and killed, and when Sweetpea kneecaps Rodney, he hallucinates that it's him on the ground, begging Jody to shoot himself. It's heavily implied that his brother's death after being thrown out onto the streets is the cause of this.
* FridgeBrilliance: "''Summer Madness''" by Music/KoolAndTheGang is the {{Leitmotif}} of the film, usually playing during Jody's most vulnerable moments. What's Jody's surname? ''Summers''.
* HilariousInHindsight: Jody tries to start his own business of selling clothes on the street to women. [[Film/WaistDeep Five years later]], Jody gets set up by a woman attempting to sell him clothes on the street, getting his son kidnapped.
* {{Narm}}:
** Most scenes between Rodney and Jody's son. The scenes were supposed to be serious, but you know you can't help but laugh at the line, "Fuck yo fort, little nigga".
** Also the scene where Jody and Sweetpea get revenge on some thugs, especially the part where Sweetpea whips one thug with his belt in an over-the-top manner.
* NarmCharm:
** Creator/OmarGooding, who plays Sweetpea, is mostly known to be a comedy actor, and clearly isn't cut out to play a gangster, but the HamAndCheese performance he gives in the film is seen as delightfully hilarious to many.
** The scene of Jody [[spoiler:imagining getting shot by Rodney]] would just be straight {{Narm}} if it weren't for Jody's overdramatic acting being so hilarious to watch. It's also probably justified considering [[spoiler:it was just his imagination]].
* StrawmanHasAPoint: During an argument with his mother, Jody rightfully points out that his own mother never moved out and that the house was his grandmother’s house. The movie portrays him as a bratty ManChild for pointing this out, but he was right to point out his mother’s hypocrisy.
* TearJerker:
** [[spoiler: Melvin stopping Jody from shooting himself by taking his gun, after seeing Sweetpea violently shoot Rodney]].
** [[spoiler: Jody kicking Yvette off of his mother's porch even after she tried to explain that she wasn't interested in Rodney. She gets upset and cries about how Jody doesn't love him anymore]].
** There's also Jody's reaction towards his mother for sticking with Melvin over him, feeling like she's betraying him following their need for him to move out.
---> '''Jody''': (in response to Juanita begging Melvin to stay) "''Don't go''"?! You gonna choose this nigga over me?! Your flesh and blood, your ''child''?!
---> '''Juanita''': You are ''not'' a baby anymore! ''You are not a child''!
* UnintentionallySympathetic:
** The scene where Jody smacks Yvette is portrayed as him crossing the MoralEventHorizon since he broke his promise to Yvette not to ever put his hands on her, and he was trying to explain that he ''wasn't'' cheating on her. However, it's difficult to fault him for that one action because he only hit Yvette in self-defense since Yvette kept on continuously beating on him and even socked him in the eye instead of just simply letting him leave. It also turns Yvette into a complete hypocrite since she even uses the DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale on Jody as a defense after she was slapped only one time. And he did genuinely regret doing so. So it's easy to take Jody's side during this one moment.
** Jody is extremely immature and selfish, but he comes off as sympathetic when you think about the main reason he's afraid of moving out: his brother ended up killed after his mother moved in her first (bad boy) boyfriend and Jody doesn't want to suffer the same fate. Despite this, the movie never attempts to expand on this reasoning, as the narrative sides with everybody against Jody.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Juanita comes off as unsympathetic. While a majority of her complaints about Jody are legitimate (Jody being a bad boyfriend to Yvette and that Jody doesn’t have the drive to want to improve himself), Juanita criticizing Jody for not wanting to move out comes off as [[ParentalHypocrisy hypocritical]], since the house she was living in originally belonged to ''her'' own mother. Also, Juanita has a pattern of dating not so good men, which makes it hard to sympathize with her for wanting Jody out of the house in favor of those men. We’re lucky that [[spoiler: Melvin turned out to be a genuine man and Jody was able to find common ground with him]].
