[[AC:Snakes (ophidiophobia), Reptiles (herpetophobia)]]
* ''VisualNovel/{{Clannad}}'': Sanae Furukawa is afraid of the Bengal Monitor Lizard. Her husband Akio talks Tomoya into dropping a toy one down her back. HilarityEnsues.
* ''Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable'' [[HealingHands Josuke Higashikata]] is scared or at least unnerved around turtles. In fact we first see both aspects of [[FightingSpirit his Stand]] [[Music/PinkFloyd Crazy Diamond]] when he heals the turtle after it was injured, and messes up a bully's nose for life. However, Josuke is actually there to try and get over it, which would work in real life (small, controlled exposure to the phobia).
* Motegi of ''Manga/HowToKeepAMummy'' is completely fine around creepy-crawlies like beetles and roaches. However she turns out to have a deathly fear of lizards. This presents a problem when a small dragon appears in her room one day.
* ''Manga/{{Ikkitousen}}'': Bachou Mouki is deathly afraid of snakes.
* ''Manga/LoveHina'': Motoko Aoyama is afraid of turtles. So her fellow tenants adopt one that can ''fly'' ([[HilarityEnsues and is particularly fond of her]]).
* ''Literature/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom'': Geordo is terrified of snakes, and Catarina carries a fake snake around just in case she needs to use it against him.
* ''Anime/QueensBlade'': Ymir can't stand snakes. When she met [[FeatherBoaConstrictor Echidna]], she spent the following night sitting up, axe in hand, convinced the snakes would come when she slept.
* ''Wasted Minds'': Yura is afraid of snakes. At one point, when she sees something she thinks is a boa constrictor, she's too scared to help her partner, Tamuro, out of its grasp. After she discovers that "the snake" is actually the trunk of an aggressive elephant, she fearlessly [[SuperStrength flips it over and slams it into the ground]].
--> '''Yura:''' Boa constrictor!\
'''Tamuro:''' There aren't any boa constrictors in Japan! Help me!\
'''Yura:''' I hate snakes!

[[AC:Spiders (arachnophobia)]]
* ''Franchise/AceAttorney'': In the manga version, [[spoiler: Jirou Kimura was scared to death of spiders. He went apeshit and committed suicide after his boss [[AssholeVictim Komori Akamune]], who couldn't stand his arrogance, locked him for hours in a room full of them.]]
* ''Manga/OnePiece'': In the Jaya Arc Nami freaks the hell out when she discovers a tarantula crawling on her waist, and even Sanji is scared as well. Usopp surprisingly ''isn't'', picking it up and petting it explaining he used to train spiders when he was young. Fittingly enough, Sanji in Wano arc finds himself briefly at the mercy of GiantSpider [[SpiderPeople woman]] Black Maria.
* Yusei in the English ''Manga/YuGiOh5Ds'' dub expresses this during his duel with Roman Godwin (whose monsters are all spiders).

[[AC: Insects (entomophobia)]]
* ''Manga/AiYoriAoshi'': Miyabi Kagurazaki is a tough, all-business OfficeLady / HaremNanny capable of hurling [[MamaBear anyone who]] threatens "Lady Aoi" across the room. She completely loses composure in the presence of bugs, especially roaches. Unfortunately, WeaselMascot Uzume has the cat-like tendency to kill bugs and [[HilarityEnsues bring them as a gift]].
* ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'':
** Yomi cannot stand cicadas. Naturally, [[TheGadfly Tomo]] takes an opportunity to [[http://manga.animea.net/azumanga-daioh-hoshuu-hen-chapter-3-page-4.html plant one on the back of her shirt.]]
** Sakaki is also revealed to be scared of horseflies, among other things (See the "Various" category below).
* ''Manga/CaseClosed'': A plot point in one case: RichBitch Hiromi Yamazaki is completely terrified of bees due to being allergic to their sting (and she almost died when stung by one as a little girl)... [[spoiler: and the person who killed her is smart enough to actually use bees as one of their "killer weapons". More exactly, they caused her to panic at the sight of some bees released in the highest floor of her BigFancyHouse, then covered the door handle in honey so there would be ''more'' bees there, and when Hiromi leaned on a wooden rail... the rail was "broken", [[DeathByFallingOver causing her to fall to her death]].]]
* ''Manga/EdensZero'': Shiki is a GravityMaster and incredible combatant...who collapses in a gibbering heap at the mere sight of a bug.
* ''Manga/FrankenFran'': Adorea is scared of cockroaches, and had quite the reaction when she and Okita happened to walk into a room that was full of them. From the same chapter, a young woman who is [[NeatFreak obsessed with cleanliness]] freaks out when a cockroach falls into her tea.
* [[AllThereInTheManual According to character notes]], Japan of ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' is scared to death of cockroaches, to the point that he, as a very reserved [[TheStoic stoic]], would ''cry'' over them.
* ''Literature/InvadersOfTheRokujyouma'': Ruth isn't ''scared'' of beetles, per say, but she's hated them ever since a sleep-walking incident caused her to think that Koutarou is more interested in beetles than her. Her hatred is limited to rhinoceros beetles, however.
* ''Manga/IWantYourMotherToBeWithMe'': Yuzuki is afraid of [[SpidersAreScary spiders]] and insects, even butterflies when she sees one up close, but tries to overcome her fear for her son [[BeetleManiac Asahi]]'s sake. She still gets startled when his pet beetle buzzes its wings, tripping and [[SuggestiveCollision falling onto Ryo]].
* ''Manga/{{Kekkaishi}}'': Tokine she is the more experienced, much smarter of the two kekkaishi, tough as nails and able to handle anything....except cockroaches. She definitely hates those cockroaches.
* In ''Manga/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess2016'', Midna is not a fan of bugs, which is why she makes Link deal with them. The Twilit Bloat freaks her out so badly that she loses control herself and... [[ZeroEffortBoss one-shots it completely by accident.]]
* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'': Koji Koda is afraid of insects, but since his Quirk is to command and control animals, he sometimes needs to overcome his fear to help his comrades.
** Present Mic is also terrified of insects, which is how Koda and Jiro manage to hilariously defeat him in their exam.
* ''Manga/{{Nichijou}}'': [[RobotGirl Nano]] is scared to death of cockroaches. In one sketch she has one trapped under a bowl and would rather tape the bowl to the table and throw the table itself out than risk it getting free. She also faints at the sight of a mosquito (which she herself killed).
* ''Manga/OnePiece'':
** GothicLolita Perona is absolutely ''terrified'' of cockroaches. It only took Usopp a bunch of fake ones to make her flip her shit.
** It's not really surprising that Oda made [[GirlyGirl Nami]] afraid of bugs, but [[ChefOfIron Sanji]]? He's just as terrified. It's even more hilarious when Usopp, who embodies the LovableCoward trope, is the only one of three who isn't afraid of insects and finds them cute. Nami’s entomophobia comes back in the Whole Cake Island anime as when the crew is attacked by giant ants. She runs away while everyone else fights, saying she just can’t stand them.
* Misty of ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'' has three things that she hates most of all: carrots, peppers, and bugs, as exhibited when Ash catches a Caterpie in one of the first episodes of the show and Misty cannot stand being near it. This is exhibited many times in the show, like during the episode with the Bug Catching Contest where she freaks out whenever a wild Bug Pokemon even comes close to her. It should be noted, however, that she doesn't mind the prettier bugs like Butterfree and Ledian.
* ''Manga/RisingXRydeen'': Mikan is a tough girl who can move as fast as lightning and fire powerful lightning blasts but she is deathly afraid of cockroaches.
* ''Anime/SmilePrettyCure'': Nao Midorikawa. It's one of her three phobias.
* ''Manga/YonaOfTheDawn'' Kija's fear of bugs (and his wild overreactions) provide quite a bit of lighthearted goofiness.
* ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'': The English dub gives Yusei Fudo a fear of bugs in Episode 2. This gave them some potential 40 episodes later, when his opponent had a deck full of spiders, including one [[GiantSpider really big]] [[EldritchAbomination plot-related]] one. It's a mystery how [[Creator/FourKidsEntertainment they]] didn't realize that ''Yusei'' being scared of something like bugs is just... laughable.

[[AC:Mice & Rats (musophobia)]]
* ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}'': The title character is afraid of mice despite being a robotic cat. It's because he was once sleeping and mice ate his ears. He turned blue of the shock and that's [[TragicHero why]] he is a blue, ear-less robot cat.
* ''Manga/DragonBall'': General Blue. In fact, this is what breaks his concentration on paralyzing Goku when a mouse crawls across his leg.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesDiamondAndPearl'': Dawn's reactions to Plusle and Minun (two mouse-like Pokémon) range from BlueWithShock to shrieking collapse. Oddly, it's ''just'' those two; she has no problem with other Electric Pokémon (like her own Pachirisu), or mice (like Pikachu and her Cyndaquil). It stems from a childhood incident that gave her an EmbarrassingNickname. She gets over it later on, though.
* ''Manga/RuinExplorers'': Rassha. Inconvenient in that one of her traveling partners has a curse that turns them into a mouse whenever they do magic.
* ''Anime/SaberMarionetteJ'': All the Saber Marionettes except Lime. And it's ''hard-coded'' into their programming.

[[AC:Cats (ailurophobia)]]
* ''Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1971)'': The goofy pink animalistic genie from is terrified of cats.
* ''Literature/{{Anpanman}}'': Katsuobushiman is a skillful samurai that's a master with his blade...but, thanks to being a dried bonito fish, he has a horribly crippling fear of cats. Baikinman has managed to use this fear against him, building giant feline robots. This also gives him troubles when being around Nyanja, a ninja cat.
* ''Manga/CityHunter'': Umibozu is ''deathly'' afraid of cats, and especially {{cute kitten}}s, leading to many funny moments, as we're speaking about a [[GentleGiant giant]] badass ProfessionalKiller here. His enemies, who know how unbeatable he is, often make use of this weakness to have a chance at him.
* ''Anime/CowboyBebop'': PsychopathicManchild Pierrot le Fou from the episode "[[Recap/CowboyBebopSession20PierrotLeFou Pierrot le Fou]]", due to his association of them to his experimental trauma. [[spoiler:It also turns out the cat that was present during the experimentation had heterochromia just like Spike has (his false eye doesn't quite match his real one), which makes him freeze up at a crucial moment during their final showdown and allows Spike to defeat him.]]
* ''Anime/JuuniSenshiBakuretsuEtoRanger'': Bakumuru is afaird of cats. The reason is that [[spoiler: Chocalate always chased him.]]
* ''Manga/MyBrideIsAMermaid'': Every single mermaid (except Masa) is utterly terrified of cats, to the point that San's father (who is the head of a Yakuza clan) evacuates a school because Nagasumi had a kitten with him. Mikawa goes even further, using his contacts to bring in the ''military''.
* Minoru from ''Manga/NekoDeGomen'' [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs breaks out in hives, blacks out, or breaks out in hives before fainting]] at the sight of cats. HilarityEnsues when he tries to hide this phobia of his from Yayoi, his OneTrueLove, who, unbeknownst to him, is a CatGirl herself.
* ''Manga/NyankoDays'': Yūko's rival, Iketani Arashi, cannot stand cats.
* ''Manga/PandoraHearts'': Gilbert was terrified into freezing up by the mere presence of the Cheshire Cat, to the point where he didn't react when Cheshire was about to rip him wide open, and ''he didn't even look like a cat.'' Cheshire looked like a ''[[CatFolk bishie in a cat costume]]''.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesBlackAndWhite'': Cilan is terrified of Purrloin for an unrevealed reason.
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'': Ranma developed this after training for a particular technique. Except there's a stinger in the tail -- Ranma's fear can drive him into a [[UnstoppableRage temporary psychotic state]] where he becomes a mindless but unbeatable berserker (who acts like a cat), and only Akane can bring him outta his funk. What makes this worse is that one of Ranma's [[UnwantedHarem many fiances]] is [[InvoluntaryShapeshifting cursed to turn into a cat]] when exposed to cold water.
* ''Anime/RanpoKitanGameOfLaplace'' has Kobayashi adopt a lost kitten in [[BreatherEpisode episode 6]]. Akechi can stop bombs with ease but will stay as far away as possible from cats.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'':
** In ''Super S'', Fish Eye of the Amazon Trio panics at the sight of a cat. It's shown twice, both involving cute little Diana. [[spoiler:And it's a hint about Fish Eye's true nature: namely, that Fish ''is a fish''.]]
** In the anime, Usagi's brother, Shingo is afraid of cats after an incident when he was a toddler (meaning he gets terrified when he sees Luna). This becomes a plot point and eventually gets resolved by the end of the episode, and Luna is adopted into the household.
* ''Manga/{{Saiyuki}}'':
** In the Saiyuki Party Drama CD Sanzo is terrified of a small kitten that Goku brings in from the rain, so much that when it hides under his kimono he starts screaming (in some fan's minds) like a sissy.
** This is played with in the Reload anime with a mixture a fear and a supposed allergy. He got over it.
* ''Anime/WolfsRain'': The wolf Toboe says that cats creep him out. [[spoiler:However, after the world's death and rebirth Toboe is seen in human form cradling a stray kitten]].
* ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'': Professor Chronos (Crowler in the dub) was afraid of cats (and the fact that Daitokuji-sensei's (Professor Banner's) pet cat Pharaoh was a constant presence at the Osiris dorm didn't help).
* ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL'': There are ''two'' characters with this phobia: Astral and Rio Kamishiro.

[[AC:Dogs (cynophobia)]]
* ''Manga/AhMyGoddess'': [[HarmlessVillain Sayoko Mishima]]
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'': Breda.
* ''Manga/{{Inubaka}}'': Kim, due to being menaced by feral dogs on a regular basis during his childhood. He eventually gets over it and adopts a shiba puppy, Chanta.
* ''Literature/{{Inukami}}'': Yōko has a fear of dogs, which one might think as strange, given that she's an Inukami (dog god) herself... [[spoiler:except that she's actually a kitsune.]]
* ''Anime/{{Kiznaiver}}'': Tenga is terrified of dogs, a fact which was apparently his deepest secret. He even mapped routes to his school specifically to avoid them.
* ''Manga/KurokosBasketball'': Taiga Kagami.
* ''Anime/LoveLiveSunshine'': Riko Sakurauchi is afraid of dogs since she was bitten by one in the past. Unfortunately for her, Shiitake, the Takami family's BigFriendlyDog, has taken a liking to her, and the other girls seem to find her distress amusing. Her fear extends to all dogs regardless of size, including ''puppies''. [[spoiler:By episode 5 of season 2, she has gotten over her cynophobia with a little help from Yoshiko, and the final episode reveals that she obtained a pug puppy named Prelude.]]
* ''Anime/MaisonIkkoku'': Shun Mitaka has an inconvenient fear of dogs. Problem is, the object of his affection (Kyouko) has a big dog she is really fond of, and his arranged fiancée (Asuna) has a whole bunch of them in all sizes. [[spoiler:He beats his fear, by getting his own dog, who then gets him into a compromising (marriage) position.]]
* ''Manga/{{Nichijou}}'':
** The Professor is scared of dogs because she's afraid they may bite her. Rather amusing, given her favorite animal is the shark.
** Sakamoto is afraid of dogs too, but that's [[JustifiedTrope mostly because he's a cat]].
* In ''Manga/NurseAngelRirikaSOS'', Ririka leaves her puppy in the care of her father for the day. The problem is that he doesn't get along with dogs and won't get anywhere near Herb. When forced to take him on a walk, he ties multiple ropes together so that there is a huge gap between him and Herb.
* ''Manga/{{Onidere}}'': Sayo cowers in fear of even the smallest puppy.
* ''Manga/SquidGirl'': Mr. Tokita, Ayumi's father, is deathly scared of dogs; including adorable and harmless puppies. When his daughter brought one such puppy home, he kicked himself out of the house so as to not deal with it, until Eiko encouraged him to try and get over it.
* ''Manga/StrawberryOneHundredPercent'': Yui has a fear of dogs.
* ''VisualNovel/ToHeart2'': [[CoolBigSis Tamaki]] is so afraid of dogs that she freezes on the spot. [[spoiler:It becomes a major plot point in the original VisualNovel to save her from one.]]
* Similarly, Yakumo in ''Manga/SchoolRumble'' is afraid of dogs. However, she [[KindheartedCatLover loves cats]].
* ''Manga/ToLoveRu'': Oshizu has a crippling fear of dogs, despite being a ghost. The characters [[LampshadeHanging point out]] that the dogs cannot do anything to her, as she's already dead, but it doesn't help. She does have a physical body to inhabit and dogs ''can'' now do something to her…and she is definitely aware of this, and it only makes her fear worse.

[[AC:Frogs & Toads (batrachophobia)]]
* [[GeniusBruiser Choutaro Ohtori]] in the anime version of ''Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis''. Just watch him scream in horror when a cute li'l frog jumps on his face...
* Kaede Nagase of ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'', the badass {{Ninja}}, and easily the most calm of the entire cast seems to only be thrown off by the mere sight of frogs. Any frogs.
* In the ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' anime, the first time Sakura sees Naruto summon a toad, she cringes and tells him she can't stand frogs. Great, he had enough trouble getting dates with her already.
* Sai from ''Manga/HikaruNoGo'' has expressed a terror of frogs... or at least of a [[{{Gonk}} spectacularly ugly]] man whose smile was frog-like, to the point of distracting Sai from his favorite game.
* Kanzo Hattori, the blue ninja in ''Manga/NinjaHattori'' by Creator/FujikoFujio (A).
* Fujiko Mine from ''Franchise/LupinIII'' is afraid of frogs. Naturally Lupin teases her from time to time about it, and Zenigata used it against her on one occasion to get information out of her. In another episode, Lupin actually uses a frog to [[FaintInShock knock Fujiko out]], whereupon he [[BoundAndGagged ties up and gags her]] in order to [[IdentityImpersonator steal her identity]] as part of a con.

[[AC:Birds (ornithophobia)]]
* Tetsuya Tsurugi from ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' and Kyouichi Shidou from ''Idaten Jump''. Both of them were attacked by birds when they were small children. Naturally, the omake of the ''Idaten Jump'' episode featuring Shido's hate of birds milked it for what it's worth.
* Sengyoku of ''Manga/HoshinEngi'' is afraid of birds after being stalked by a guy with birds.
* Blue (named Green in English) from ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' is afraid of birds after being abducted by one as a child. [[spoiler:She gets over it by confronting Ho-Oh, the Pokémon who kidnapped her, and capturing Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, also known as the legendary birds. She then sics them on [[BigBad The Mask of Ice]].]]

[[AC:Slugs & Snails (molluscophobia)]]
* Arima of ''Anime/CuteHighEarthDefenseClubLove'' has a fear of snails and a love of gardening, which really don't mix. Not to mention his [[MentorMascot green hedgehog boss Zundar]] loves to eat snails...
* Genie in ''Anime/{{Rune Soldier|Louie}}'' had some very bad experience with giant snails, which leads to Louie giggling immaturely and thinking of Naughty Tentacles.
* The heroine of ''Literature/{{Slayers}}'', Lina Inverse, also known (to herself) as Sorceress Genius and (to anyone else) as Bandit Killer, Dragon Spooker and Enemy Of All Who Live, is terrified ''unto death'' by two things: Slugs, and her big sister Luna. Her sister is also the reason why she fears slugs. [[GoodIsNotNice Luna]] was pissed off because [[ChaoticNeutral Lina]] decided to sell pictures of her in the bath.
* Himespetchi from ''Anime/{{Tamagotchi}}'' is shown to have a fear of snails and slugs.

[[AC: Other animals]]
* ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'':
** Chilchuck detests [[ChestMonster mimics]], which have killed him several times in the past and are very difficult to deal with. As a master lockpicker and trap disabler, he can ''usually'' recognize them, but, much to his annoyance, many parties expect him to open and deal with mimics, which is almost always a supremely dangerous waste of time.
** Griffins and similar monsters are the only creatures Senshi can't think pragmatically about, thanks to a [[DarkAndTroubledPast traumatic incident]] when [[spoiler:his friends were trapped in a dungeon and [[SuperPersistentPredator methodically hunted down]] one at a time by a hippogriff.]]
* ''Anime/FreshPrettyCure'':
** Ferrets: Inori is afraid of ferrets at first, due to getting bitten by a ferret whom she tried to tend to (she's a veterinarian daughter)... and then when she became a Precure, she got saddled with a ferret fairy, Tart, which freaked her out that she either communicates with her friends with a phone in the same room ''just so she doesn't need to look at Tart'', and used a long range hand device for body contact. That got resolved in about 10 episodes after one FreakyFridayFlip in which Inori got stuck in Tart's body and made her overcome her fears.
** Octopus: Miki from the same series is reduced into a screaming loon whenever she saw an octopus, living or not, due to an incident when she's young and tried to play with a small octopus, only for the octopus to wrap her hands with its tentacles and started showing off its tentacles in close up, freaking her out. Since she was trying to be 'perfect', she tried hiding this fear, but things excarbated when the current MonsterOfTheWeek is taken from an octopus statue. Thankfully, Setsuna managed to give blunt but encouraging words that eventually pushed Miki to get over her fear and fight the monster, and eventually her whole fear.
* [[PrincelyYoungMan Austria]] of ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' is ''terrified'' of sea creatures like crabs and starfish, as he freaks out when [[TheDitz North Italy]] catches one in one of the CD dramas.
* Kaitou Kid, the titular character of ''Manga/MagicKaito'' and an EnsembleDarkHorse character in ''Manga/CaseClosed'' is afraid of... [[spoiler:fish. To the point where only a bomb going off on a boat urges Kaito to scuba dive to find out what happened to his not-girlfriend Aoko and Silver during a chapter in Volume 1.]]
* The titular character from ''Manga/SquidGirl'' is deathly afraid of sharks and killer whales, even inflatable ones (in the beginning, at least). {{Justified|Trope}} in that she is a squid girl and sharks and killer whales are natural predators to her and since she has no idea what floats are, she assumes that the inflatable ones are real. She works and lives near a popular beach with lots of children...
* In ''Anime/{{Pikaia}}'', Hanna has a fear of any sort of animal that could be considered "gross". Despite this, she's regularly forced to use biomimetics from creatures of this sort.
* In ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'', given how long she's been in the wild, you'd think someone like [[WildChild Sapphire]] wouldn't exhibit this. However, during the single-elimination tournament at the Battle Frontier, she winds up paired against Tucker and subsequently [[CurbStompBattle chokes]] when he deploys his Salamence (compared to Ruby, who went up against Emerald but threw his fight). [[HarmfulToMinors She had been attacked by one as a child]]; Ruby saved her but it roughed him up pretty badly. And unlike Blue above, she hasn't had the chance to thwart this issue... yet.
* Iris from ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesBlackAndWhite'' has a huge fear of Ice Pokemon similar to Misty and her fear of bugs. The first Pokemon she reacted to do with absolute disgust was Trip's [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Vanillite, one of the most harmless looking Ice-type Pokemon around.]] When both Ash and Trip ask her why she's scared of Vanillite, she replies that as a Dragon trainer, she has developed an emotional bond for them including the weakness. Trip calls her out on it by saying that Dragons are also super effective against each other and should have a fear of Dragons as well. Iris then tells him to shut up and quickly corrects herself by saying she can't stand the cold.
* Vegeta from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' is afraid of worms. He meets giant worms in Buu's body (filler only).
* ''Manga/MonsterMusume'': Draco is terrified of ''fish'', while Curie is scared of bats (even cute ones).

[[AC:Flying (aviophobia) or Heights (acrophobia)]]
* Gene Starwind (space travel) from ''Manga/OutlawStar'' (Conveniently, the titular CoolShip has AppliedPhlebotinum that keeps the fear from taking effect). Rather justified because his last experience in space before the story begins saw him watching from an escape pod as his dad was killed.
* Akito Hayama from ''[[Manga/{{Kodocha}} Kodocha]]''.
* ''Anime/SailorMoon'': Sailor Jupiter (her parents died in a plane crash), although apparently the writers forgot about it when they put her on a plane in an episode of the final season. It was only mentioned in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]].
* One villain in ''Manga/OPartsHunter'' took this to a ridiculous degree: he's so afraid of heights that he is scared crapless if he needs to ''stand up''.
* ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler'': Katsura Hinagiku was deathly afraid of heights, although she seems to be able to handle them now, particularly when it means spending time with Hayate, or something having to do with him. Ayumu also seems to have a similar effect on her.
* Masayuki from ''Anime/GhostHound'' became deathly scared of heights for perfectly understandable reasons. He got over it by spending hours at a time playing a virtual reality flight simulator game. Actual flight didn't hurt either.
* Yuri from ''Anime/WandabaStyle'' is afraid of heights, as TheProfessor learned when he sent her (and the other girls of [[GirlGroup Mix Juice]]) into space.
* Esteban from ''Anime/TheMysteriousCitiesOfGold''. This is established in his very first appearance, and a recurring plot point throughout the series.
* Shinichi Chiaki's fear of flying is a subplot in ''Manga/NodameCantabile''. He has to overcome this phobia before he can emerge as a world-class conductor.
* ''Manga/{{Mitsudomoe}}'''s Hitoha is depicted to be acrophobic, complete with the VertigoEffect.
* Tsubomi Hanasaki from ''Anime/HeartCatchPrettyCure'' is fearful of heights, freaking out when she first uses the Cure Mantle while normal. [[spoiler:In the epilogue of the novel released in 2015, it's revealed that she wants to go into NASA to help deal with this so she can finally go into space.]]
* Nao Midorikawa from ''Anime/SmilePrettyCure''. It's one of her three phobias. Akane Hino, too.
* Aoi Yukimura from ''Manga/EncouragementOfClimb'' is afraid of heights. [[spoiler: Kaede also has a fear of heights which she uses rock climbing to help conquer]]
* Parviz of ''Anime/GundamBuildDiversReRise'' is terrified of heights. This proves to be a problem as his Gunpla, the Valkylander, is a flying dragon and part of his CharacterDevelopment is fighting through his fear so he can fly.
* Ryo Saeba from ''Manga/CityHunter'' is terrified of airplanes. [[spoiler:His DarkAndTroubledPast started with the airplane he, at the age of ''3'', and his parents were riding in being shot down, instilling the fear of airplanes in him since then.]] That being said, there are caveats: While he's afraid of airplanes, he can travel using helicopters just fine. Moreover, the story arc where this phobia of his is integrated into the plot sees to it that he would TakeALevelInBadass, if somewhat -- while he'd initially show fear even to the ''sound'' of airplane engines or toys at the start of the arc, by the end of it he manages to overcome that level of fear so that he's only terrified in physically getting inside the plane, not feeling afraid of them once he's outside of it.
* Nano of ''Manga/The100GirlfriendsWhoReallyReallyReallyReallyReallyLoveYou'' is terrified of heights. She uses this to her advantage during an eating competition, relying on the adrenaline rush from her fear to help her swallow her last piece of sushi.
* In the movies and filler cases of ''Manga/CaseClosed'', Kogoro suffers from mild acrophobia (fear of heights) and is quite uncomfortable in high settings where he has the chance to see how high up he is. He does not have this fear in the manga and in canon episodes of the anime.
* In ''Manga/GirlfriendGirlfriend'', Naoya is ''terrified'' of flying.
* ''Manga/ToLoveRu'': Rin has a secret fear of heights.
* ''Manga/KomiCantCommunicate'': Naruse is afraid of heights.
* ''Manga/OmamoriHimari'': Yuuto Amakawa is terrified of heights and gets a panic attack whenever he gets tossed into the air and nervous when around a cliff. It turns out this is because as a child, he repeatedly tried to climb a tree to reach Himari and fell every time. Then he fell off a cliff and injured himself, and Himari activated her demonic powers to rescue him. The sight of her demon form terrified him, and though many of his childhood memories were erased, the terror still affects him subconsciously.

[[AC:Water (aquaphobia/hydrophobia)]]
* Kitsuka from ''Manga/BrynhildrInTheDarkness'' had a water pool accident when she was younger. She tripped in a pool where she could stand perfectly, and she nearly drowned. This traumatized her enough to suffer from aquaphobia.
* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'': Android 18, oddly enough.
* Tasuki of ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'', who naturally is the first person overboard when the ship hits a violent storm. Additionally, {{vitriolic best bud|s}} Tamahome's preferred method of torment is dangling him over a body of water.
* Seine from ''Manga/HekikaiNoAiOn'' since her second father tried to drown her. It took years to sit in a bathtub. It is also a disadvantage against the mermaid she fights, since they live in the sea, and Seine refuses to learn how to swim.
* Golem in ''Anime/MonsterRancher'' hates water. Justified because he's made of rock and would sink like a stone.
* Aiko of ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi''. The story is that she told her dad that she could put her head in the water. Then, they have a contest to find out who can put their head in the water. She drowned 10 seconds into the contest.
* Sonic in ''Anime/SonicX'' (though not in the games, oddly). In an early episode, he falls into a pool of water during a fight with Knuckles and immediately begins thrashing around and screaming for help, only to be rather embarrassed when he realizes the water is only ankle-deep.
* Asumi in ''Manga/TwinSpica''.

[[AC:Fire (pyrophobia)]]
* Rita Rossi, the CuteMute from ''Anime/AshitaNoNadja'', [[spoiler: because her parents died in a huge fire that broke in their circus, and poor little Rita saw them perish.]].
* Anita in ''[[Anime/ReadOrDie R.O.D. the TV]]'', with good reason. Exploited for [[BreakTheCutie maximum emotional effect]] during a [[KickTheDog particularly brutal scene]].
* [[spoiler:Aoba]] from ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'' has a rather strong fear of fire. However, he uses this to his advantage [[spoiler: in order to frame [[BigBrotherBully Izumi]] by setting his room on fire and making it seem like it was Izumi's fault because he forgot to unlit the cigarette he smoked.]] He plays this straight though after the events though.
* Silver Mask aka Hilmes from ''Literature/TheHeroicLegendOfArslan'' has developed a fear of fire ever since he was young. He was traumatized by what happened to the right side of his face being burned, thus concealing it in a silver mask. Since then, he has feared those flames.
* Ikaros Much from ''Manga/OnePiece'', due to his squid friend Daidaros burning to death in the sun.
* Barnaby Brooks in ''Anime/TigerAndBunny,'' due to the circumstances of [[spoiler:his parents' deaths.]]
* Soichirou Ashida from ''Manga/SteppingOnRoses'' '''[[TraumaButton freaks the fuck out]]''' whenever he sees fire. This is due to [[spoiler: his family perishing in a house fire when he was a child, and his other relatives accusing him of setting it.]]
* Yamame of ''Manga/The100GirlfriendsWhoReallyReallyReallyReallyReallyLoveYou'' is terrified of fire, to the point where just the smell of smoke causes her to freeze up. When the Rentarou Family goes out on a date at a yakiniku place, Rentarou makes an effort to find one with an electric stove for everyone to use, so as to allow Yamame to enjoy the night without worrying about fire.

[[AC:Other things in nature]]
* Astrapophobia, Ceraunophobia, Brontophobia (FearOfThunder and lightning) or Tonitrophobia (fear of just thunder): Haruhi from ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' has this (these) fear(s), after being discovered to be afraid of little else.
* In the obscure, one-shot ''Anime/SonicTheHedgehogTheMovie'' {{O|riginalVideoAnimation}}VA, Tails freaks out when lightning strikes. This is actually referenced in a few later pieces of ''Sonic'' media, such as ''VideoGame/SonicMania Plus'', where Tails flinches in shock upon seeing the lightning surrounding the Titanic Monarch Zone.
* Himawari on ''Anime/WandabaStyle'' has a fear of running out of air while in space, which is bad, since she and the other members of GirlGroup Mix Juice are trying to get into space to perform a concert on the Moon.
* Mew of ''Manga/PsychicAcademy'' is mortally afraid of rain, to the point where she will not go outside if it's raining, and panics if it starts raining while she's outside. This is a byproduct of the day when [[spoiler:an experiment her parents performed on her caused her powers to go out of control and kill her mother]], the only memory of that day she hadn't suppressed was the sound of the sprinkler system going off.

[[AC:Clowns (coulrophobia)]]
* Chibodee Crocket from ''Anime/MobileFighterGGundam''. [[spoiler:He was kidnapped and then [[MissingMom left mother-less]] by [[MonsterClown terrorist clowns]] as a child, after all.]]
* Crow Hogan from ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'' is afraid of clowns in the dub, when he is facing Jaeger. A PlotHole in later episodes when they later meet each other again and Crow actually helps him.

[[AC:Ghosts (phasmophobia)]]
* Skuld from ''Manga/AhMyGoddess'' is afraid of ghosts, which is surprising (and funny) considering that she's a [[PhysicalGod goddess]].
* Sakura Kinomoto from ''Manga/CardCaptorSakura'' is afraid of ghosts much to the point that even hearing a rumor or a ghost story frightens her.
* The ActionGirl Ran Mouri of ''Manga/CaseClosed''. In her case, it's kinda justified: she fears them not because of the supernatural stuff, but because if she ever was under attack from them, her physical strength would be useless against them.
* Kaori from ''Manga/CityHunter'' fears ghosts. A story arc where the agent requesting help for protection is a ghost of a recently-deceased woman is nerve-wracking for her -- worse so since the client said ghost requests protection for is the twin sister of said recently-deceased woman, whom the ghost takes over temporarily from time to time to communicate with the protagonists.
* Hikaru Himuro from ''Anime/DragonDrive'' also has that fear. Unfortunately, Chibi is a victim of his fear, as he grabs on to Chibi's tail for some reason (maybe a reflex to help calm himself?), and doesn't let go when he passes out from fear, much to both Chibi and Reiji's annoyances.
* Mami from ''Manga/EsperMami'' is so scared of ghosts that even ghost stories can spook her.
* Tabitha from ''Literature/TheFamiliarOfZero'' is a stoic badass, but trembles and faints when she thinks she hears ghosts.
* Veronica of ''Manga/FrankenFran'' is an ArtificialHuman built for assassination and bodyguard duties. She also recoils in fear at the prospect of ghosts.
* Both Gintoki and Hijikata in ''Anime/{{Gintama}}'' are very scared of ghosts, not that either of them would ever admit it.
* America from ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'', who is prone to [[ScreamsLikeALittleGirl screaming like a little girl]] whenever one's involved.
* Futaba of ''Manga/MissionYozakuraFamily'' is terrified of ghosts because they can't be fought with martial arts. [[spoiler: She's actually terrified of losing the people closest to her and seeing depictions of ghosts reminds her of the people she failed to protect despite her best efforts.]]
* Akeno of ''Manga/MyBrideIsAMermaid'' is a badass swordswoman, yet she is absolutely terrified of ghosts.
* In the ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' anime, when Naruto heard that one his missions has possibility of ghosts being involved, he curled into a ball which odd when didn't back down against the Kyuubi.
** The Kyuubi is a chakra spirit, and he's ''part'' of him. Ghosts, on the other hand, are dead people, and not something Naruto had ever had to deal with before.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'' has Brook, who is terrified of ghosts, zombies, and all other things that can be considered spooky... which is about as outrageous as it gets considering the fact that he's a [[DemBones living skeleton]].
* Hazuki and Momoko in ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'' are usually reduced to [[SurvivalMantra chanting Majorika's name]] during the test of courage episodes.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'':
** Misty gets nightmares after encounters with Ghost Pokémon, though that's a typical side effect of that type.
** Cilan has a huge fear of Ghost-type Pokemon. He tends to zigzag around this trope, because while he's not scared of the Ghost Pokemon once it shows itself to be the cause of items moving around, the mere thought of being around them apparently creeps him out. Special mention in [=BW029=] when he freaks out and screams like a girl when the Litwick are controlling the items in the haunted mansion.
* ''Anime/PrettyCure'':
** Nao Midorikawa from ''Anime/SmilePrettyCure''. It's one of her three phobias. Miyuki Hoshizora, too. Also, the previous Pretty Cures [[Anime/YesPrettyCure5 Rin Natsuki]] and [[Anime/SuitePrettyCure Ellen Kurokawa]].
** An episode of ''Anime/GoPrincessPrettyCure'' reveals that [[TheAce Minami Kaidou]] is afraid of ghosts.
* Liz Thompson from ''Manga/SoulEater'' is afraid of ghosts. Not helpful when her job/homework requires her to fight them, and odd considering she's something [[EquippableAlly supernatural]] herself. In contrast, her death god teammate is afraid of completely mundane things - see 'Various'.
* Mari Sakurano of ''Anime/{{Raideen}}''. Akira at one point tells her there's a snake behind her, causing her to jump and run away. When she finds out she's been tricked, she angrily pounds his chest while he laughs.
* ''Manga/SquidGirl'': Goro is completely terrified of ghosts. In one chapter, a bogus ghost story is enough to get him paranoid for the entire next day.
* Haruna in ''Manga/ToLoveRu''. She has a severe fear of ghosts and the supernatural with the exception being Oshizu, but only for a while. When frightened, she has a habit of grabbing the nearest thing around her – typically Rito – and swinging wildly, in an attempt to get rid of whatever frightens her.
* Jonouchi Katsuya from ''Anime/YuGiOh'' has such an intense fear of the supernatural in general (Ghosts included) that he actually passes out ''twice'' as a result of them -- Once during the manga's version of an AmusementParkOfDoom and again before his duel against 'Ghost Kotsuzuka'. He wins the duel after being woken up in the end.
* Yuuma Kousaka of ''Anime/GundamBuildFightersTry'' is terrified of ghosts. It makes one match a little difficult for him as its set in a haunted house of sorts.
* ''Literature/TrappedInADatingSimTheWorldOfOtomeGamesIsToughForMobs'': in the Marie Route, Leon is terrified of ghosts.

[[AC:Blood (hemophobia)]]
* ''Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar'': Heart. Like Ranma, he flips out and becomes a berserker if he sees his own blood.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'': Tsunade, after [[spoiler: her lover Dan died and she couldn't do anything about it]]. Should have been quite a cramp on her superninja-doctor career... until she overcame it during a high-stakes battle at a point of near mortal defeat, thus leading to overcoming her opponent [[spoiler: Kabuto]] as well (this must be a trope somewhere). Also Gaara when Sasuke punctured his chest and saw his own blood for the first time he freaks out.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'':
** Pearl from the Baratie arc was acting rather smug and arrogant up until Sanji managed to draw blood from him, which he claimed had never happened before, at which point he went berserk. So, it's either this trope or he was just that upset about having his perfect record tarnished.
** Dr. Kobato, a pediatrician from the G8 FillerArc, was this trope to a T, unable to look at even a picture of blood without fainting. She overcomes it thanks to Chopper's inspiration as a doctor, however.
* ''Literature/{{Slayers}}'': Naga the White Serpent is also quite afraid of blood, [[spoiler: since she walked on the place where her mother was assassinated, which was all blood-splattered]]. Made even worse by how [[spoiler: she killed the assassin... via using a RazorFloss-like spell, thus splattering the room ''in even more blood''.]]
* ''Manga/TomorrowsJoe'': Ryuhi Kin has an immense fear of this [[spoiler:due to him accidentally killing his father when he thought his father was a hungry soldier coming back from the Korean War to get him food.]]

[[AC:Women (gynophobia) and beautiful women (venustraphobia)]]
* The male lead from ''Manga/GirlsBravo''. Then his so-called rival is terrified of men (androphobia).
* Yamcha from ''Manga/DragonBall''. He wanted the Dragon Balls to actually ''cure'' this phobia, since he also wanted a girlfriend but was too terrified to ask any girl out. He got over himself after hanging out with Bulma, though.
* Heine from ''Manga/DogsBulletsAndCarnage''- the only girls he can stand to touch him are CuteMute Nill, and later, Naoto.
* At the beginning of the series, most (if not all) of the male cast of ''Anime/{{Vandread}}'' are scared of women. This is understandable, since one of the main plot points is that men and women have been segregated for years, to the point that neither gender really believes that the other exists anymore. To men, women have become something akin to horrible, frightening monsters of legend.
* The Haou-Sou in ''Manga/{{Onidere}}'' are all afraid of the opposite sex, with two of them being male.
* ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'': Shutaro Mendou is afraid of one ''specific woman''--his fiancee, Asuka Mizunokoji. Due to her intense strength (she even tore a tank apart and made it into a makeshift armor suit with her bare hands) and athleticism (she could run 100 meters in 12 seconds with same armor suit--200 kg, or 440 pounds) a simple "light hug" from her causes multiple broken bones and internal injuries. Since Shuutaro is rather terrified of being crushed, it seems unlikely that this relationship will ever be consummated, especially since Asuka also has androphobia (see below).
* The doppelgänger who appears in early chapters of ''Manga/RosarioPlusVampire Season II'' is very afraid of women. It doesn't stop him from kicking their asses or copying them.
* ''Literature/HighSchoolDxD'': Believe or not, [[spoiler:Issei Hyoudou]] is somewhat terrified of attractive women, all due to a [[FirstEpisodeResurrection very brutal betrayal]] on his first date. Already suffering from low-self esteem, he often avoids getting close to girls he finds attractive out of fear that they find him boring. For a while, this fear puts a damper in his relationship with his SecondLove [[spoiler:Rias]].

[[AC:Men (androphobia)]]
* In ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'' Casca directly after the Eclipse [[spoiler: where she was violently raped by Griffith as Femto and went insane]] is naturally terrified of men and won't let Guts or Ricket touch her, only trusting Erica (the daughter of Godo the blacksmith). This caused immense pain for Guts who had until that point been in a extremely intimate relationship with Casca and her fearing him motivated his desire to leave and go on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Griffith (the bastard responsible in large part for putting her in this state to begin with) to cope. After the TimeSkip, Casca got over her fear of men and lets complete strangers touch her, [[AllMenArePerverts which proves to be dangerous]]. Unfortunately Casca's phobia of men becomes limited only to Guts after he gets possessed by [[EnemyWithin the Beast of Darkness]] and nearly strangles her, to the point that [[spoiler:upon getting her former personality restored Casca no longer fears Guts but the mere ''sight'' of him is a TraumaButton so [[StarCrossedLovers they remain apart]]]].
* ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'' has Asuka Mizunokoji, the sister of Tobimaro Mizunokoji. She's isolated according to the Mizonokoji family's tradition, from any and all males from the moment of her birth until the age of 16, at which time an omiai will be held for her to get married. As such, even her brother was unaware of her existence until then. Because of this isolation (and the fact the first male she met was the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi) she is extremely timid and deathly afraid of males. Now whenever she sees one, she pushes him away, screams "Eek! A maaan!" ("Aa~! Otokoo~!") and runs in terror at high speed from all males, not heeding any obstacles unfortunate to be in her path (such as buildings). She is, thanks to her daily training and the genetics she inherited from her mother, insanely strong (once tearing a completely armored tank apart and fashioning it into a makeshift suit of armor on herself with her bare hands), as well as very athletic (being able to run 100 metres within 12 seconds, while wearing her 200 kilogram suit of armor). While engaged to Shutaru Mendou at the omiai to end the Mendou-Mijunokoji rivalry, her strength even means a simple "light hug" from her causes multiple broken bones and internal injuries. Between Asuka's androphobia and Shuutaro's fear of being crushed, it seems unlikely that this relationship will ever be consummated.
* In ''Manga/GirlsBravo'', the eventual BigBad Yukina has the same allergic reaction to men as the male lead Yukinari has to women. She's a BrokenBird as a result. She also has superpowers. It's not a good combo. In the last episode, she gets over it thanks to Yukinari and promptly becomes his (second) StalkerWithACrush. Unfortunately for Yukinari, he hasn't gotten over ''his'' phobia yet.

[[AC:Darkness (nyctophobia)]]
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'': Mankind has always feared the darkness, so he scrapes away at its edges with fire.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesSunAndMoon'': Sophocles is afraid of the dark, as shown in an early episode. He uses his Togedemaru as a nightlight to nullify this.
* Mametchi from ''Anime/{{Tamagotchi}}'' is afraid of the dark due to an accident from when he was young, as revealed in [[Anime/TamagotchiTheMovie the movie]].
* [[DarkMagicalGirl Yugi]] from ''Anime/TenchiInTokyo'' has been terrified of the dark ever since her playtime with monsters caused enough [[NonMaliciousMonster massive property damage]] to get her entombed alive for over three thousand years.
* Shutaro Mendou of ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'' is afraid of both the dark and tight spaces, though this was accidentally caused by locking his child form in a large pickling jar [[NiceJobBreakingItHero while trying to ''cure him of said phobias.'']] As long as a girl's in sight, though, he's not ''claustrophobic'' as long as she can see HIM. If she CAN'T see him, often by putting a bell over him (and combining his phobias) he'll either break the bell out of terror-induced strength, or scream "It's cramped! It's dark! I'm scared!" over and over again until he is freed from confinement (as it often is in the anime).

[[AC:Various phobias]]
* Guido Mista of ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureGoldenWind'' has quadrophobia, meaning he fears anything that involves the number [[FourIsDeath four]]. When Bruno's gang is first introduced Mista is freaking out because the waiter at their restaurant brought them four pieces of cake, and when the gang rents a boat he very fervently tells Bruno not to rent Boat #4. This even extends to his [[FightingSpirit Stand]] Sex Pistols, a set of six [[GripingAboutGremlins gremlin-like]] creatures who help guide his bullets; they have numbers on their foreheads, but naturally they skip the number 4. Near the end of the story, Mista accidentally drops four bullets and begs someone else to drop one more. In a cruel, ironic twist, [[spoiler:only ''four'' of the seven main characters are left alive by the time the story is over]].
* Jamil Neate in ''Anime/AfterWarGundamX'' has a severe cockpit phobia due to blaming himself for the massive ColonyDrop that almost wiped out human life on Earth at the end of the previous war. In early episodes he just can't get in, and his hands shake visibly at the prospect. Starting in the Fort Severn arc, though, he starts getting treatment and is able to slowly return to his old skills.
* Baikinman from ''Literature/{{Anpanman}}'', being an alien bacterium, is terrified of soap. Contact with it reduces him to the size of a fly. Likewise, Mushibaikinman, a cavity from the same species as Baikinman is afraid of toothpaste, as it has the same effect on him. Interestingly, they're the only members of their species to have this weakness.
* Sakaki from ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'' is scared of horseflies, but also of thunder, earthquakes, and even the mechanical guards at construction sites.
* In ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex'', Hyouka Kazakiri is terrified of Touma Kamijou, despite him being one of the nicest guys on the planet and her having a crush on him. [[spoiler: It is because she is an artificial angel, and she subconsciously sensed Touma's right hand, the [[AntiMagic Imagine Breaker]], which would erase a supernatural being from existence on contact. When Touma learns this, he assures her that her fear is a good thing, because the fear of death proves that a being is alive]]. She somewhat gets over her fear when Touma saves her several times and assures her that he would never willingly harm her.
* ''Manga/{{Citrus}}'': Harumi is ''terrified'' of her sister, to the point where a single text sends her into a panic.
* Goku from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' is AfraidOfNeedles. This came after he got a shot after his first fight with Vegeta. Sorta justified: he had never gotten a shot in his life until then.
* Celty from ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'' is afraid of ''space aliens'' for some reason. [[RuleOfCute (Probably because it's adorable).]] She also develops a fear of police – traffic cops in particular – later in the series, after a stubborn justice-focused {{Determinator}} on a squad bike starts getting on her case.
* Miyuki Takara of ''Manga/LuckyStar'' really hates dentists.
* Makoto Kenzaki from ''Anime/DokiDokiPrettyCure'' is afraid of dentists in episode 35, but she overcomes her fear in the same episode. Leads to a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTkFzxjm4kM&ab_channel=EvieStories hilarious moment]], though!
* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'':
** Austria loathes any sea creatures.
** Also, Seychelles hates the cold to the point of collapsing in Cuba's arms after walking in the snow for a while, despite wearing a huge coat. JustifiedTrope due to the very warm Seychellois climate.
* ''Manga/MonsterMusume'': Miia is terrified of severed heads (and indeed, gore in general), and therefore does not react well to Lala the dullahan.
* Ryoshi Morino in ''Literature/OkamiSan'' has extreme scopophobia (fear of being seen or stared at); he shrinks down into a cringing ball and covers his face whenever people look at him.
* Junna from ''Anime/RoboticsNotes'' has a fear of robots which came from an accident when she was a kid, when she tumbled her grandfather's mascot robot and fell on top of her in the dark.
* The ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'' anime gives Sanosuke a crippling fear of trains (which pops up in every {{Filler}} episode and NonSerialMovie that involves riding a train), as well express a suspicion of cameras, fearing that it'll steal his soul. TruthInTelevision, actually: when trains and cameras were introduced in Japan after the isolation period was finished, many Japanese reacted in exactly the same way.
* UsefulNotes/{{Jesus}} in ''Manga/SaintYoungMen'' has a phobia of salespeople, which he confesses to Buddha was the real reason for his famous freakout in the temple. Apparently he was trying to hide under the chair, 'used too much force', and when people rounded on him for an explanation as to why he threw the chair he was so berserk he screamed at them all about how this was supposed to be a place of worship.
* In ''Manga/SoulEater'', Death The Kid's ObsessivelyOrganized tendencies seems to mainly manifest as a fear of asymmetry (sometimes it gives him panic attacks and HeroicBSOD, sometimes it acts as a BerserkButton).
* In the original ''Anime/YuGiOh'', Seto Kaiba has a rather peculiar fear: of Exodia. He has a good reason, of course, seeing as Yugi defeated him rather badly using it, and inflicted a Penalty Game after doing so that took Kaiba a while to recover from. (It was not without some malice that Kaiba refused to disqualify the Exodia-using Rare Hunter in Battle City much later, as he was hoping Yugi would be just as scared of facing it.) Later, Kaiba's evil stepfather Gozaburo tried to take advantage of this by using Exodia Necross against him, something he claimed was an even stronger version, but by then, Kaiba had learned not to be so careless, and was able to defeat it using careful strategy. (The fact that Gozaburo had almost ''no'' strategy other than Necross helped.)
* In a ''Anime/YuGiOhGX 3''-parter, it is revealed that vampires scare the crap out of Daitokuji-sensei. Guess who was the VillainOfTheWeek in all 3 episodes? [[spoiler: He may have been lying, however. He was secretly a member of the Seven Stars, a group that Camula also belonged to. They were only seen as a group in one brief scene (in shadow), and it is not known if the individual members actually helped each other at all.]]
* In the dub (but not original) version of ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL'', Shark's sister Rio claims that Shark has a "strange fear of onions", and he [[BerserkButton really gets upset]] when she brings it up. ([[NoodleIncident One can only guess how it happened.)]]
* In ''Manga/TomorrowsJoe'' the titular character is afraid of hitting his opponents in the head, [[spoiler:because of his rival Rikishi died by suffering a blow to the head by Joe himself.]]
* It was hinted that Magellan, the main antagonist of the Impel Down arc of ''Manga/OnePiece'', was actually agoraphobic (the polar opposite of being claustrophobic) and was nervous in large, open spaces, enjoying dark, enclosed areas. Likely a big reason why he was so suited for his job. One odd example in that the character acquires the phobia, but after a certain incident where Usopp unleashed the mother of all {{Wild Take}}s when fed an [[BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce ultra-spicy berry]], one of Doflamingo's crew, Sugar, got a phobia of people with [[GagNose long noses]]. Usopp, CombatPragmatist that he is, used it against her later on, by [[spoiler:sniping her with a projectile shaped exactly like the aforementioned WildTake.]]
* In ''Anime/OnegaiMyMelody'', the tough tomboy Mana has a fear of cute things. She can barely tolerate the presence of My Melody and her friends.
* ''Manga/SgtFrog'': Keroro has '''two''' -- huge dogs and the Banana Lizard (although not for the same reasons).
** For Natsumi, it's slugs, which leads to the creation of Wettol King.
** For Giroro, it's sea cucumbers -- apart from paralleling Natsumi's only fear, there seems to be no other explanation.
*** Technically Giroro has another -- ghosts. Counts as PrimalFear on its own, until you consider that Giroro is a war veteran, implying that he's spent ''a lot of time'' [[FridgeBrilliance in the company of death]].
* Asuka from ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' has pediophobia (fear of dolls) due to the one that her mother used as a ReplacementGoldfish. It's also the main reason why she doesn't get along with [[EmotionlessGirl Rei]].
* Momoko of ''Manga/SumomoMoMomoMo'' combines this with DoesNotLikeSpam by having an unusually specific aversion to hard-boiled eggs with faces drawn on them. She doesn't like eggs (and avoids cooking with them generally) due to her father having force-fed them to her through much of her childhood, but she doesn't fully freak out and cower until she sees one with a drawn-on face. Naturally, this manages to come up in one chapter, [[DramaPreservingHandicap neatly taking her out of commission]] until Koshi figures out how to get around it.
* Lillie of ''Anime/PokemonTheSeriesSunAndMoon'' has a crippling fear of Pokemon (including friendly and harmless Pokemon like Ash's Pikachu) due to a mysterious childhood incident. She's unable to touch them because of this. A lot of her initial CharacterDevelopment has her fighting to overcome this fear as she ends up adopting the Alolan Vulpix named "Snowy". [[spoiler:Partway through the series, it's revealed that Silvally had saved her from Nihilego and encountering the Pokemon allowed her to remember the moment and cast aside the fear.]]
* Most of the main characters ''Manga/DadTheBeardGorillaAndI'' have some sort of phobia to add to their quirks.
** Michiru is afraid of dogs, even smaller ones like poodles. She also finds the Hina Dolls' faces scary, and almost refuses to go to school when her kindergarten sets up the dolls for Hinamatsuri in chapter 26. The chapter ends with Souichi saying that he hopes for Michiru to take the dolls as her dowry when she gets married some day, and she tearfully asks if she is stuck with them for life.
** Nishihara-Sensei has a crippling fear of gorillas, and can't look at Kouji's face for more than a few minutes.
** Souichi ''really'' can't stand ghosts and other horror stuffs. This is caused by a haunted house prop falling on him when he was younger, while his brother pointed and laughed.
** Kouji is afraid of insects, especially spiders, and would ScreamsLikeALittleGirl at the sight of one--to his own embarrassment.
** Tsukasa is afraid of pigeons after getting swarmed by them when she was younger.
* ''Manga/ToLoveRu'': Yami ''hates'' ecchi things, especially tentacles.
* ''Anime/YokaiWatch'': Roughraff cannot stand hot tubs, due to being based on a lizard.
* ''Manga/MagicalGirlSpecOpsAsuka'': Nozomi is kidnapped and tortured by the magical girl Abigail, who wields scissors. After she is rescued, she is so traumatized that she goes into screaming fits whenever she sees scissors or magical girls. Any magical girls, even the ones who rescued her. She is cured of her fear when Kurumi erases her memories of being kidnapped and tortured.
* ''Manga/The100GirlfriendsWhoReallyReallyReallyReallyReallyLoveYou'': Shiina Usami has Kenophobia, an intense fear of empty spaces or voids, and Autophobia, an intense fear of being alone. She craves being part of a close group so as to not be alone, and goes as far as to try and integrate herself with the Rentarou Family despite none of them having met her before. When Rentarou has to chase her and track her down in a subway, he correctly deduces she would not take the Women Only car, even though Rentarou would be unable to follow her, and instead opt for the most crowded car she can find. When they exit the train at the next, virtually empty station, Shiina panics due to suddenly going from the "hot" of intense crowding to the "cold" of a train stop empty but for her and Rentarou.
