Sansa learns that Bran and Rickon are still alive. In Hardhome, Tormund kills the Lord of Bones and Jon convinces plenty of Wildlings to make an alliance, but the army of the dead attacks the camp and makes a massacre. Jon learns that Valyrian steel can withstand the ice weapons of the white walkers, and kills one of them with Longclaw. The Night's King appears leading the assault and stares at Jon as he flees to the ships, while the remaining Wildlings are being killed, then, as a demonstration of power he resurrects the dead Wildlings as wights before the survivors' eyes.

Stannis' sellswords desert him and join forces with the Boltons, who easily defeat his army. King Stannis himself is executed by Brienne of Tarth for the assassination of his brother Renly. Ellaria poisons Myrcella, who dies in Jaime's arms on the way to King's Landing after admitting she knows he's her father. Sansa and Theon escape from Winterfell after killing Myranda. Arya kills Ser Meryn Trant, and is blinded as punishment by the Faceless Man. Daenerys is captured by a Dothraki khalasar. Cersei is forced to march through King's Landing fully nude. The Night's Watch mutinies against a Lord Commander for the second time in the show, with a number of men lead by Ser Alliser Thorne murdering Jon Snow.

Yara and Theon reach Meereen before Euron and after some negotiations, Daenerys and Yara decide to support each other. Davos finds out about the circumstances of Shireen's death. Jon and Ramsay's armies confront each other, and Ramsay decides to let Rickon go solely so he can kill him from afar with an arrow. The titular battle commences afterwards and ends with Jon capturing Ramsay, Winterfell reclaimed by the Starks, and hundreds dead, Wun Wun and Smalljon Umber included. While in captivity, Ramsay is eaten alive by his own starved hounds after Sansa sets them free from their cages.

Daenerys dumps Daario, names Tyrion her Hand, and finally sets sail for Westeros with her full army to invade Westeros next season. Arya, having returned to Westeros, kills Walder Frey and his sons in vengeance of the Red Wedding. Bran discovers through warg flashback vision that Jon is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen and the nephew of Ned Stark. Meanwhile, Jon is declared the King in the North by the Northern lords. And after 60 episodes, the ultimate BrickJoke finally gets a punchline; Winter has come.

Jaime executes Olenna by poison, rendering House Tyrell truly extinct, but not before Olenna reveals to Jaime that she was the one who killed Joffrey.
36* ''[[AC:[[Recap/GameOfThronesS7E6BeyondTheWall 6 - Beyond the Wall]]:]]'' Arya blackmails Sansa about a treasonous letter she had written back in Season 1 while under duress, and threatens to kill her. Thoros is killed by a wight bear. Jon's party captures a wight, but is surrounded by the wights and White Walkers. Thanks to Gendry's message, Daenerys rescues them with her dragons, but the Night King kills Viserion. Jon is separated from the others, but Benjen rescues him at the cost of his life. Daenerys is thoroughly convinced of the threat of the dead, and Jon bends the knee to her. The Night King raises Viserion as a wight.
37* ''[[AC:[[Recap/GameOfThronesS7E7TheDragonAndTheWolf 7 - The Dragon and the Wolf]]:]]'' Jon and Daenerys meet with Cersei and seemingly work out an agreement to [[EnemyMine fight the dead together]]. However, [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder Cersei backstabs them]], intending to let them weaken themselves against the White Walkers while she builds up her forces to deal with them afterwards. This [[EveryoneHasStandards disgusts Jaime]] so much that he [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere abandons her]] and rides north to Winterfell to assist against the dead. Winter reaches King's Landing. In the North, Sansa seemingly gives into Littlefinger's manipulations and puts Arya on trial, only to [[OutGambitted reveal she's actually calling him out on his crimes]], before having Arya execute him. Sam and Bran meet, and between the things they've individually learned, realize that Jon (birth name Aegon) is the hidden trueborn son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, and thus heir to the Iron Throne; meanwhile, Jon and Daenerys consummate their feelings for each other. In the final scene, the Night King -- [[DragonRider riding the undead Viserion]] -- brings down the Wall at Eastwatch, allowing the [[ZombieApocalypse Army of the Dead]] to march into Westeros.

Just as the Night King is about to kill Bran, Arya sneak attacks and [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu kills him]]. With the Night King's death, [[KeystoneArmy all the White Walkers and Wights are destroyed]], meaning humanity has won the War for the Dawn. After the battle, Jorah succumbs to his injuries. Melisandre, believing she has fulfilled her purpose and to atone for her crimes, allows her true age to catch up to her and crumbles to dust.
41* ''[[AC:[[Recap/GameOfThronesS8E5TheBells 5 - The Bells]]:]]'' Daenerys executes Varys for plotting to replace her with Jon. Her army then attacks King's Landing, overwhelming the defenders, and even when they attempt to surrender, she decides to simply burn the city down, to Jon's shock and dismay. Sandor sneaks into the Red Keep with Arya, but sends her away to confront Gregor, who kills Qyburn before facing his brother in a duel that ends in both their deaths. Jaime kills Euron in a fight on his way into the Red Keep where he's reunited with Cersei; they die together as the building collapses on them.
42* ''[[AC:[[Recap/GameOfThronesS8E6TheIronThrone 6 - The Iron Throne]]:]]'' Jon, realizing that Daenerys is [[MoralEventHorizon too far gone]], kills her to end her reign; in response, an enraged Drogon melts the Iron Throne before taking her body and flying away. Afterwards, an assemblage of Westerosi lords, at Tyrion's suggestion, [[ElectiveMonarchy choose]] Bran as their new king, with him appointing Tyrion as his Hand to [[TheAtoner atone]] for his past mistakes. Sansa, with Bran's blessing, declares that the North can no longer be part of Westeros, and it becomes an independent kingdom with Sansa as Queen. Arya leaves Westeros to explore what's west of the Sunset Sea. Jon, for killing Daenerys, is sent back to the Night's Watch, where he leaves to help guide the remaining Wildlings back to their lands beyond the Wall.
