[[SavedFromDevelopmentHell After twenty years of development and thirty months in production]], the film known as ''The Happy Cricket'' finally saw the light of day in 2001.

[[TheHero Christopher]] is a [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin happy cricket]] who spends his days playing his [[MacGuffin magic stringless guitar]] for his friends. But, his peace is interrupted when a purple lizard named [[BigBad Wartlord]] bans music. Making matters worse, Linda the Night Star falls from the sky. Making matters worse, Wartlord, having mistaken the star for a diamond, is also searching for her. Thus, it's up to Christopher and his friends to rescue the night star, and stop Wartlord. Also, there's a GreenAesop tacked on just to be educational.

!!''The Happy Cricket'' contains examples of:
%% * TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: All over the place. Most notable is one scene where Cartibella flies around some CGI flowers, and a later scene with Wartlord holding the inert Night Star.
* AwardBaitSong: "Night Star" has the soothing melody of a Disney love ballad.
%%* ChekhovsGun: The slingshot.
* DeusExMachina:
** [[spoiler: Linda brings all the plants back to life after returning to the sky.]]
** At the climax, [[spoiler: Leonardo's house is flown in, piloted by the girls, allowing Christopher and friends to escape the burning castle]].
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler: When Christopher plays his guitar for Linda, the star glows so brightly it forces Wartlord over the edge of his castle and into the flames below.]]
%% * {{Expy}}: Christopher and Linda seem to be based on Jiminy Cricket and the Blue Fairy, respectively.
* GenreShift: The first movie was a fantasy film set in the countryside, involving a magic MacGuffin, fantasy monsters and a spirit toucan. The sequel switches to a modern city with night clubs and killer robots.
* GreenAesop: "The Earth is not blue anymore! It must be because of this pollution thing!"
%% * HumanAliens: Linda the Night Star looks human during "Night Star"
%% * IAmSong: "Come On, Let's Dance" serves as this for Christopher
%% * LimitedAnimation: The short ''The Solar Eclipse'' has this, along with a recycled soundtrack.
%% * MacGuffin: Christopher's magic stringless guitar that only he can play
* MacGuffinTurnedHuman: Linda is a variant, spending most of the movie as an inanimate object.
* TheMovie: For the Happy Cricket character first seen in Sharp Electronics commercials in the '80s.
* NumberTwoForBrains: Wartlord's second-in-command, Buffuno, follows in the tradition of brainless evil minions who somehow manage to stay employed.
%% * SimpletonVoice: Buffuno sounds like this in the English dub
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: Trailers for the sequel spoil the revelation that [[spoiler: the titular 'giant bugs' are mechanical]].
* ViewersAreGoldfish: The characters feel the need to repeat exposition, explain plot points multiple times, and describe what they just saw/was just explained to them.
%% * VillainSong: "Majesty Rap" and "Jungle's Rap", both preformed by Wartlord's minions.
