->''"Typical Finnish crime lacks premeditation, the motives behind it are petty at best and it's usually simply an awkward experience for both the victim and the perpetrator. The job of the police is to pick up the perps at home, then insult them until they break down in tears, gradually become better people, and stop screwing up their lives."''
-->--'''Kyösti Pöysti.'''

''Pasila'' is a satirical Finnish animated series about the daily lives of the policemen at the Pasila precinct in Helsinki.

The series' main character is Inspector Kyösti Pöysti, a [[UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist highly self-centered, dysfunctional individual]] who is [[BunnyEarsLawyer always sucking on a pacifier]] for unknown reasons. His unruly behaviour and unconventional methods while investigating crimes are often a source of ire for his boss, Rauno Repomies, an elderly police captain bordering on senility. Pöysti's colleagues include his former Police Academy classmate [[OnlySaneMan Neponen]], a manly policewoman Helga who has anger management issues, and Desk Sergeant Pekka Routalempi, a dull little man who finds every little mundane thing "fascinating". Annoying TV presenter Juhani Kontiovaara also keeps butting in Pöysti's business, when in search of cheap thrills and other ways to improve his ratings.

''Pasila'' became hugely successful due to its hilarious characters and slapstick humor, with six seasons running from 2007-2013. The sixth season was stated to be the last one, but a self-proclaimed SpinOff called Pasila 2.5 started airing in February 2014, which ran for four seasons ending in 2016.

Episodes with English fansubs can be found from Website/YouTube and there is also an official English dub of the series, known as ''Jefferson Anderson'', with only the first two seasons having been dubbed into English.

!!Tropes:
* TheAlcoholic: In order to negate the effects of a particulary bad hangover, Pöysti takes up drinking at work, and gets subsequently fired. However, once Repomies realizes that this technically makes Pöysti an alcoholic, he shows unending sympathy towards him for having such a manly problem.
** Routalempi is a recovering alcoholic. He has said that when he used to drink, he found the world dull and himself interesting. After he quit, he became boring, but began to found the world around very fascinating.
* AllPsychologyIsFreudian: Initially subverted, then later played somewhat straight: Pöysti visits several psychiatrists over the course of an episode, starting off with one belonging to an unmentioned school of psychology who only states the obvious, following with a fake Jungian one that doesn't care about any of his issues and just wants to tell his patients about his own childhood - before finally getting to talk to a Freudian one who manages to help him to some degree.
* AluminumChristmasTrees: [[invoked]][[InUniverse Pöysti weaponizes this]] against Routalempi when he's assigned to keep him and Neponen in a jail cell on Repomies' orders by getting him to agree to let them out if he tells Routalempi the "world's most fascinating thing" and he admits it tops all other fascinating things he knows about: Pöysti then proceeds to point out that all currently existing common bananas are mutant cultivars of two inedible species of bananas, on the verge of extinction since they can only reproduce via cultivars and thus they're all genetically identical with each other, which also contributes to the previous point due to them being more prone to diseases. Routalempi quickly checks it online and instantly lets them out, musing stunnedly about the "identical mutants in my breakfast cereal" afterwards.
* AnimalWrongsGroup: The Association for Orphaned Dogs of St. Petersburg is a minor version of this. They don't do anything that could be likened to terrorism, and aren't any more obnoxious than other groups (because everyone here is obnoxious). However, they're still more than happy to [[{{Pun}} hound]] the police endlessly, as was the case when a dog accidentally got killed in a police raid.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: A well-employed gag in the series.
** In one of Kontiovaara's infamous morning talk shows: "And for that reason, steer clear of drugs, booze and modern jazz."
** Pöysti lists a collection of cybercrimes committed by a teen to the kid's father, including "defamation, inciting theft, inciting murder, threat, illegal threat, spreading around instructions for making nuclear bombs, aggravation against an ethnic group, attempted seduction of minors and blowing raspberries at people"
** There's also a drink menu Pöysti reads at one point: "Black Russian, Mint Black Russian, An Unemployed Arse, Drowning Somali, Stupid Swede, Chinese Famine, Estonian Abortion... and cut brandy." He then wonders if, as a cop, he should do something about those names.
** Repomies is a common source for these:
--> '''Repomies:''' Neponen, there are three extremely dangerous criminal organizations in Finland: The mob, the Charity Club of Riihimäki, and the parents' association of the local elementary school.
--> '''Repomies:''' There's a bank robbery going on down Kasarminkatu! We have hostages, armed men, and a chance that bills could get wrinkled!
--> '''Repomies:''' Return your badge, your gun, your game controller, and your key to station's ballpit!
* AsHimself: The hosts from the Finnish extreme travel show Madventures appear in an episode as [[InkSuitActor Ink-suit actors]], voiced by themselves.
* AssumedWin: There's an episode where, out of revenge for unwanted jobs and the task of conquering [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petsamo Petsamo]] back from Russia, Pöysti accidentally tricks Repomies into thinking he's won an award he's been desperate to get for the past 20 years. Pöysti saves the day by outing the man responsible for granting the awards for wasting taxpayer money. Repomies finally gets a medal "not for any actual merit, but just because it fits an occasion like this", as stated by Pöysti.
* AsTheGoodBookSays: As a running gag in an episode: Pöysti makes up passages such as
--> "He who shall cast the first stone shall covet for his neighbour's donkey, which is an animal rights violation, so there!"
--> "He who casts a blaming finger might poke Jesus in the eye by accident! Job 24/7!"
--> "Blessed are those who don't cast nasty looks like that at others, for they shall inherit Repomies's delightful working chair... which is now reserved for me, by the way."
* BabiesEverAfter: The Spin-Off ends like this for [[spoiler: Pöysti and Darja]].
* BankruptcyBarrel: Worn by one of the victims of a con man, who insists that it's the "best barrel in the town, a friend got it for me, real pine, the only one in Finland".
* BeneathSuspicion: The actual criminal in one episode ends up being this: as a RunningGag, nobody pays any attention to [[spoiler: the victim's personal assistant]], who practically confessed to shooting at the victim as soon as the police arrived, and is blown off repeatedly.
* BerserkButton: Don't call a man called Laakkonen gay or get between Raine Makkula and his music.
** Also, don't blame media about anything in front of Kontiovaara. He'll... well, not exactly go berserk, but get seriously indignant. (Considering that his usual saccharine behavior and that blaming the media is about the only way to make him show any anger at all, it counts as this trope.)
--> '''Kontiovaara:''' What the hell are you blaming the media for? Are you menstruating or do you simply want to live in [[{{Ruritania}} Albania]]?
--> '''The male interviewee:''' Yes.
--> '''Kontiovaara:''' That was so lame. I can't air this.
** Pöysti is also revealed to utterly hate it when a [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything celebrity chef with anger issues]] likens him to a [[Literature/KarlssonOnTheRoof character in a children's book]] and needs to be restrained despite the chef already being hospitalized.
* BilingualBonus: The episode "Kaksvitonen" (literally "Twenty-Five", a ParodyEpisode of Series/TwentyFour) features two long scenes done entirely in English. Likewise, the episode "Obama" also had quite a lot of English dialogue when the titular president showed up.
* BlahBlahBlah: Used occasionally by various characters to cut their speeches short when they feel like they've already made their point clear. Amusingly enough, Kontiovaara also uses this once while he's doing his usual introduction to his show, though considering the scene is seen from Pöysti's POV, he might just be hearing his normal speech as this.
* BlatantLies: A [[TheStoolPigeon prison mole]] suffers an unseen "accident" where he, according to Repomies, slipped in the shower, flew into a wall, tripped on a rack of knives, bounced into the heating boiler downstairs, fell into a paper shredder, flew through a window, fell ankle-deep into some wet cement, tripped and fell into the ocean.
* BreadEggsBreadedEggs: After Repomies is forced to retire, he tries to write an angry letter.
--> '''Repomies''': Firstly, why are there no general stores anymore? Secondly, why is there so much sex on television? Thirdly, why don't people have sex in the general stores anymore?
* BreadEggsMilkSquick: A customer at a store wants to know why they're not selling a specific brand of raspberry pie anymore. The cashier tells him that "Nobody bought it...plus it tasted bad...and some kids died when they ate it." [[TooDumbToLive He still insists on wanting to buy some afterwards]].
* BrickJoke: Pöysti tries to make a point by describing a situation where two opposing religious leaders are having an argument and get crushed by a [[PianoDrop falling piano]]. Repomies is utterly confused why a piano would fall on both of them out of the blue, but leaves the matter be when Pöysti states that it's irrelevant. Skip to the very end of the episode, where said people are standing next to each other outdoors, agreeing with the basic concepts of their religious views... and are prompty crushed by a falling piano.
** In one episode, Repomies rambles about his funeral. Among other things, he notes that maybe someone else gets buried alive with him. While he never dies on the show, the final episode does include a segment about his funeral; And Pöysti jumps into the coffin with him.
* BurgerFool: The restaurant chain Virginia Woffelhouse turns out to be an inverse version of this: Instead of being a soulsucking hellhole for its employees, the sole Finnish franchise owner instead wants to indirectly ruin the lives of all hicks and boring average joes with their ridiculously unhealthy burgers since nobody would want to eat at his overpriced gourmet restaurant.
* CallBack: In a later season episode, Pöysti has a massive hangover, and at one point a song by Phil Collins is heard. The same song that was used in a earlier episode where Pöysti also had a hangover.
** Pöysti and Neponen also make another CallBack in season 3 towards a diamond heist in an earlier episode:
-->'''Pöysti''': Is it just me or does the majority of police work consist of babysitting rampaging drunks?
-->'''Neponen''': Yes...or wait, we did have that case about that international diamond thief!
-->'''Pöysti''': Yeah, right. Although he revealed himself as the diamond thief by accident when he started a drunken bar brawl and the diamonds fell out of his pocket when we were called in to arrest him.
-->'''Neponen''': True...
** Väinö-Klementi, the son of one of Pöysti's dates, is seen later as part of the Junior hockey team whose trainer the team (sans Pöysti) is assigned to watch over due to TrainingFromHell he suspects the kids.
* CampGay: A cleaner in episode "Sect", is this to some extent: He wears a pink shirt and threatens the sect with hair spray bottles strapped to his waist - implying that he'll empty their contents simultaneously.
-->'''Cleaner''': "There's gonna be some serious damage, at the very least all the flowers will wither!".
** On the other hand, his job could hardly be any less glamorous, he's not flamboyant and is in a steady relationship, so he's more StraightGay with some superficial CampGay features thrown in for laughs.
** When Repomies has to act gay for the media, he turns into this. He even develops instant knowledge of hairdressing.
* TheCasanova: City Clerk Jorma Hyvärinen takes great pride in his ability to bed any given woman in town and makes it a point to remind everyone he meets about it. He's pretty much willing to chase any skirt, save for Mrs. Repomies, whom he considers utterly hideous.
* CelebrityIsOverrated: Pöysti becomes one in a season 3 episode when he manages to apprehend a pair of bank robbers with no harm to any of the hostages [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking or bills]]. He manages to become a nobody again by making a false announcement that he's going to start studying to be a practical nurse... but as Repomies points out, he's now an ex-celebrity, which both he and Pöysti consider to be an even worse fate.
* ChalkOutline: Repomies has one on the floor of his office for no particular reason.
** The SpinOff adds another one on the other side of his room in the shape of a fish, next to the fishbowl he has.
* {{Chessmaster}}: The way in which Pöysti uses and abuses the rules of equal opportunity employment to sabotage the first legal brothel in Finland is simply ''epic''.
* ClipShow: The final episode of the show is essentially this, with Kontiovaara as its narrator. It mostly focuses on allegedly cut material such as unused characters and plots.
* TheCoconutEffect: In one episode, when [[ItMakesSenseInContext money starts raining from the sky]], all the notes are green even though the euro bank notes have a wide range of colors. Also a case of EaglelandOsmosis.
* CollapsingLair: Pöysti's not-that-evil-counterpart Anteroinen has a lair in his basement, which becomes an example when Anteroinen sets his house on fire to destroy evidence and won't let Pöysti and Neponen out until he's done explaining his grand scheme.
* CoolAndUnusualPunishment: After the events of the episode where Repomies and another man end up accidentally outing each other as traitors spreading around anti-Russian values due to their panicked reactions to the situation, the judge decrees that they need to polish an abstract piece of art until it resembles the person it's named after. The judge then states that he knows it's not a legally binding punishment since the crime is already obsolete and was a complete accident for both of the parties, but since the masses will take it seriously regardless and will demand some kind of punishment for it, he suggests they get to work.
* CouchGag: From Season 3 onwards. The exact object Routalempi is staring at changes with each episode, as does the pose Pöysti takes and an item central to the episode he might be holding when he lands on the hood of the car or jumps out of the helicopter in the Spin-Off.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: In the spin-off. After Pöysti ignored a minor crime on one of Helsinki's most peaceful suburbs (Somebody broke a streetlight), the man who reported the crime formed a group of vigilantes who beat up anybody who breaks their rules around the neighbourhood. Also doubles as DisproportionateRetribution as the punisheable offences include taking too large furniture to the trash.
* CryingWolf: Referenced by Pöysti when Routalempi tries to get the rest of the force to arrange a surprise birthday party for him, failing because nobody could tell his hinting apart from his normal musings.
-->'''Pöysti''': You kinda suffered the same fate as that shepherd boy in that one story, the one who was always shouting "Look, here's something fascinating!" to everyone, causing people to gather around, but they eventually started ignoring him since they never actually saw anything fascinating.
-->'''Neponen''': Yes, we got that already...
-->'''Pöysti''': Then one day, when there was something legimately fascinating to be seen, something REALLY fascinating, the boy kept shouting "fascinating!" to people as usual, but nobody came, and everyone missed the show!
-->'''Routalempi''': Yes, I understood the moral of the wolf tale.
-->'''Pöysti''': What wolf tale?
-->'''Repomies''': Pekka, listen...
-->'''Pöysti''': What's wolves got to do with this?
-->'''Routalempi''': I'll go to my room now...I'll sulk there...
-->'''Pöysti''': [[ItMakesSenseInContext Did the wolf steal my inflatable boat?]] What?
* CutHisHeartOutWithASpoon: Pöysti comes up with a variety of colorful threats when he's undercover in a prison as a mole:
-->*Pöysti cuts ahead in the cafeteria line*
-->'''Inmate''': Hey, you better head back to the end of the line!
-->'''Pöysti''': And your head will be on this plate if you don't www.shutthefuckup.com right this instant!
-->*Pöysti grabs a plate of stew in front of him and flips it into a wall where it sticks*
-->'''Pöysti''': I SAID NO PICKLES!
-->'''Chef''': Does your Royal Highness possibly want me to pluck them out one by one?
-->'''Pöysti''': If it suits you better, I can also pluck out all your nose hairs one by one, make a broom out of them and make you clean up all the shit I've beaten out of you with it, SO FEEL FREE TO MAKE YOUR CHOICE!
-->''*The chef quickly picks up another plate, slaps another helping of brown stew on it and starts delicately going through it with his fingers.''*
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: "Mr.'s Lampela and Lampela from the Lampela & Lampela Lawyer Agency..." See also OnlySixFaces below: the said Lampelas have the same face as Saksalas.
** Also minor character Veikko "Veikko" Salmelainen, man who made poisonous moonshine and managed to slip his bottles into Finnish liquor stores, causing all of them to be closed until they make sure they've disposed of all the poisoned moonshine.
* DietEpisode: One of the final episodes of the Spin-Off involves a formerly FatAndProud victim who was content to spend his days driving around grocery stores with his mobility scooter to gather massive amounts of junk food and consume it en masse watching TV, but who was then kidnapped by a fitness guru who finally wanted to come up with a diet that actually worked on even the most massive of hambeasts: she imprisoned him in a sealed-off basement for 6 months and forced him to do massive workouts every day and only fed him health smoothies, with the end result being a muscular, toned Adonis that she was planning to use to promote her new diet and who passing women fawn over and the Pasila policemen consider to be extremely handsome. Naturally, the victim's justifiable claims of being subjected to a kidnapping and extended torture fall on deaf ears when they all think the kidnapper did him a huge favor after seeing and hearing about his life before that, when he himself couldn't really care about all the attention women are giving him and he's far more traumatized about the sudden inability to eat more than 2 burgers at a time due to his shrunk stomach.
* DigitalPiracyIsEvil: Parodied from both sides of the argument: On the other hand, the main criminal running a transparent Pirate Bay {{Expy}} comes off as being fiercely possessive of his own property to the extent that he doesn't let Pöysti and Neponen to sit on his couch because it'll get too worn out. And the music industry's only solution to combat the increasing piracy is to fire all the musicians except band vocalists.
* DiegeticSwitch: In episode "Brother". Neponen and Pöysti start chasing a speeding car and Pöysti puts in a cassette of chase music... which is the show's standard piece used for action scenes.
* DirtyOldMan: Repomies's grandfather, 114 years old with a massive beard, goes around asking to touch any passing women and isn't too averse to kissing men either. To quote Repomies, "My grandpa isn't really all that picky, he'll hump a calf if you throw a dress on it".
** Despite what's stated above, he still ends up turning away from a whorehouse when Pöysti tells him that they only have men available at the moment, complaining about the lack of women and calling the managers faggots.
* DisproportionateRetribution: One episode more or less revolves around this: Repomies asks Pöysti to mop the floor since there's not much else to do at the moment, Pöysti refuses since it's not a part of his duties. Repomies agrees, but since he already asked, Pöysti's refusal would undermine his authority. Cue Repomies forcing Pöysti to guard the entrance of the police station with a rifle until he gives in and everyone else to first run the Cooper's test until they're half-dead from exhaustion and then forcing Helga and Routalempi to do only night shifts. As Neponen was spared from Repomies's wrath (because by doing so he wanted his "abuse of discretion soar to its utmost apex"), he attempts to patch things up between them several times, but most of them devolve into {{Blame Game}}s.
* TheDon: Parodied with Lasse "The Darkness" Puurtinen, who hires a recently-fired Routalempi as his new right-hand man, thanks to saving his new restaurant's opening with a Swiss army knife he got as a going-away present. He keeps telling Routalempi how he doesn't tolerate failure and how he has few people who he can trust despite spelling out the FridgeLogic associated with his rash and impulsive actions in the same sentence.
* DownerEnding: Parodied ''and'' played straight at the same time in the episode where Pöysti becomes a celebrity. See CelebrityIsOverrated above.
** Played slightly more straight when Pöysti's newly found teratoma brother gets infected and ends up torn off while he's still against the idea of having it removed. While he claims he doesn't miss it one bit and that anyone who gets emotionally attached to a clump of inanimate meat is even more emotionally handicapped than he is, the episode still ends in a mostly-serious montage of him wandering around depressed [[TheWorldMocksYourLoss watching various brother pairings having fun while]] [[Music/TheHollies He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother]] [[TheWorldMocksYourLoss plays.]]
** Episode "Irtiotto" (Break) had a very DownerEnding, with Pöysti [[spoiler:leaving on a plane for India at the end of the episode -- complete with (intentionally) leaving his pacifier behind.]] In fact, the whole episode was quite depressing, which is unusual for this series.
* DrugsAreBad: The main theme for one episode that culminates in each character unsuccessfully lecturing a classroom about them. Pöysti fails because he promotes alcohol as a better option for escapism. Repomies fails because he gets pissed off at the students throwing wads of paper at him, causing him to start swearing and throwing a whiteboard eraser back at one of them, mistaking it for a soft blackboard sponge. Helga fails because she instantly calls a female student a slut after she asks her the generic [[MissConception "can you get pregnant from kissing" question]]. [[IdiotBall Neponen is never even considered for the task]] because "he supports Pöysti and is suspicious". Routalempi accidentally manages to save the day by constantly getting distracted by modern school equipment while lecturing. His behavior causes the entire class to think he's an ex-junkie and they [[ScareEmStraight sign up for anti-drugs groups in fear of becoming like him]].
* DubNameChange: The English dub localised all the names except for Helga. Pöysti himself was changed to Jefferson Anderson, the same as the name of the show itself in the English dub. Neponen became Smith, and Repomies was changed to Brickman.
* EaglelandOsmosis: Several examples, like a man in drag taken into custody in the middle of his bachelor party, complaining how they didn't read him his rights. This despite Pöysti repeatedly stating that there is nothing resembling the MirandaRights in Finland. After getting tired of all the complaining, Pöysti finally obliges and comes up with the following: "Okay. You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent, or talk in a quiet voice. Everything you say may be used against you. Some of it will come against you on its own, while the rest will be purposefully used against you via judicial trickery. You know, being presented with a heavy bias in a really annoying manner! God bless."
* EarWorm:
** Andy Suonsilmä's song [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5BT0h3uUXs Karrelle Palanut Enkeli]] (Burnt Cinder Angel) is this to Pöysti.
** Repomies describes Paatinen's rapping as this in the episode "Päihdevalistajat" (Drug education), even using those exact words (in Finnish).
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: 3 of the 5 main characters had much deeper voices in the early seasons. Routalempi also seemed to make slight pauses every 2-4 words or so.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: In the end of the episode "Brother".
-->'''Man:''' Are you the guy who ran over that child?
-->'''Makkonen:''' She survived... at least it looked that way, when I caught a glimpse of her in the rear view mirror.
-->'''Man:''' Whatever. We're a bunch of alcoholic wife beaters and petty thieves from the bar next door who are full of moral indignation! We're going to lynch you!
-->As a sort of a rite for passing guilt, if you will.
-->''*They start beating Makkonen up.*''
-->'''Makkonen:''' Bury me in my car, please?!
-->'''Another man:''' This is a fascinating way of taking off focus from my own flaws as a human being... which I have a lot.
* EvilGloating: The GentlemanThief Jusu Marttinen likes to indulge in this.
-->'''Jusu:''' Grotesque, isn't it? One can dig a hole from in to out, or from outside to inside, that is for one to decide. The money is gone and there's a gaping hole, desperation takes the bank manager whole, for his jaw is agape likewise. Soon may the pacifier-ruined teeth from his mouth a dentist yank, while one laughs his way all the way out of the bank, the audience of this play will its producer soon thank. Ta-ta!
* EvilPlan: Reversed. A legitimately threatening-sounding MadBomber of the episode has no such plan beyond getting some extra cash and drops his initial demand of half a million euros down to just 1000 euros and a bottle of booze, as his credibility keeps taking hits.
** A pair of brothers plan to punch every person on the planet. It involves getting everybody on two lines by baiting them with pesto, and them driving between the lines both arms out.
* EverybodySmokes: Parodied during 70s flashbacks in one episode: A worried mother gives her children cigarettes to smoke, and even a German Shepherd guarding the Russian embassy is seen smoking at one point.
* ExiledToTheCouch: Subverted, then inverted in "Orphaned Dogs". Repomies' wife likes dogs and is pissed at Repomies because of the dog shooting incident. Cue...
--> '''Repomies:''' My wife's angry! Do you know how nice it is to sleep on the couch?
--> '''Pöysti:''' Yeah, I understand, but...
--> '''Repomies:''' Because it is nice! Now, my wife made me sleep in the bed next to her again! It's horrible, Pöysti! I want to go back to the couch where I have slept for the last twenty years!
* ExpositionBreak: Pöysti is a fan of these and they usually involve his current theory about the episode's criminal or a group of people central to it, often involving fitting visuals. Repomies has generally grown tired of them.
** Lampshaded when he initially objects to Pöysti doing it again in one episode of season 3, but since he already began and they're already in the process of being carried away by FlashbackEffects, he has no choice but to go along with it.
* ExpressiveHair: The ends of Repomies's mustache turn upwards when he's excited or happy.
* {{Expy}}: Juhani Kontiovaara is an extremely blatant expy of Lauri Karhuvaara, an actual Finnish morning talk show host, right down to his name and apperance, and Pöysti even calls him "Late" once by accident. In case someone still hadn't figured it out by the end of the series, he spells it out in the final episode.
** Olavi Kemppainen is also a blantant expy of Matti Nykänen, a legendary ex-ski jumper whose life used to revolve around yellow press and aiming for the new world record in total number of marriages, divorces and stabbings (all with the same woman).
* TheFaceless: Lampshaded. As Pöysti is walking towards his car in a parking garage, a shadowed man in a ConspicuousTrenchcoat starts following him. Still shadowed thanks to his car's headlights, the man then tosses a card to Pöysti with an address on it. As he starts to leave, he awkwardly asks Pöysti to turn his back when he enters his car since his indoor light would reveal his face.
* {{Flanderization}}: Both Pöysti and Repomies. In first season, despite their respective faults, both at least try to be competent police officers. Since then, Pöysti has became more self absorbed {{jerkass}} who seems to dislike his own work, whilst Repomies has gone full {{cloud cuckoo lander}}. Interestingly, most of the side characters (especially Routalempi who started as one note joke character) have gone to the opposite direction.
* FourOneNineScam: Repomies is pretty much computer illiterate, and falls victim to one of these after getting excessive amounts of spam.
* FreudianExcuse: PlayedWith in "Karrelle palanut enkeli". The criminal of the week - Raine - claims he has the right to feel sorry for himself and lash out at people since his wife left him, his girlfriend left him, and his kids were taken from him. Pöysti [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech points out]] his wife left because he was cheating on her, his girlfriend left because he beat her, and his kids were taken because he was TheAlcoholic.
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Also PlayedWith in the same episode as above. Raine points out that his violent behaviour should send him in jail, since his excuses for doing them are self-created and weak; if he were imprisoned he wouldn't be able to keep hurting people. Everybody agrees he has a point, but the fact that [[ComicallyMissingThePoint he admits this causes everyone to feel sorry for him and demand he not be punished]].
* FreudianSlipperySlope: Any conversation between Kontiovaara and Pete Makkonen, a man who's obsessed with cars:
--> '''Makkonen''': I just crashed my SUV, have you seen it? A Farina XL 505! It's the biggest and most impressive penis available in Finland. I mean, a car. Not a penis.
--> '''Kontiovaara''': Not a penis. I have a Volvo myself, it's a perfectly fine penis if I do say so myself.
--> '''Makkonen''': A car.
--> '''Kontiovaara''': Yes, a car.
--> '''Makkonen''': And not a penis.
--> '''Kontiovaara''': No, not a penis, of course not a penis.
--> '''Makkonen''': Neither of us has a penis. I mean, we both have a penis, but not as a means of transportation. A car.

--> as well as:

--> '''Kontiovaara''': Glad you could make it to the show. Can I join your club?
--> '''Makkonen''': Depends on the make of your penis. I mean your car.
--> '''Kontiovaara''': It's brand new, almost completely unused. I mean, the car is unused. My penis on the other hand...
* TheFunInFuneral: The funeral of Pöysti's predecessor, shown in the very first episode. Repomies speculates how happy the guy must've been to have been killed on his last day of work, "with no days wasted", how lucky he must've been for not dying on spot and instead being given ample time to "reminisce the highlights of his life on his way to the hospital" - and how he most likely took great solace in the fact that "he wasn't shot by a dirty junkie or a crazed madman, but two of his fellow officers he knew and trusted".
* TheFundamentalist: One episode revolves around one who's been kicked out of church with moderate leanings for wanting to blindly follow the Old Testament.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Subverted in the episode "Salaviina", when Pöysti is getting hysterical over the lack of alcoholic drinks in the entire Finland and the knowledge that he won't be able to get drunk come the weekend.
** Played more straight in another episode when Pöysti's emotional side is exposed via personal knowledge of crying people, which makes him emotional as well: He is about to start crying right outside the door of an elderly scam victim and asks Neponen to slap him. Parodied when the scam victim slaps him too to stop him from shouting in the hallway.
* GetRichQuickScheme: The specialty of Pauli Mutikkala. All of them basically boil down to "attach a printer that prints stock market figures to an animal cage, let the animal in question tear the prints to shreds, pick up the shreds that are still legible afterwards and invest in those stocks".
** This is clearly a take on the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinCapita 2003 WinCapita pyramid hoax]] in Finland.
* TheGhost: Mrs. Repomies. This is mostly a relief to the audience, as she is often described as hideously ugly. To the misfortune of his colleagues, Repomies often ends up mixing some bikini photos of her among his briefing slides.
* GratuitousEnglish: Pöysti uses a lot of this, and other characters do so too every once in a while. Repomies's catchphrase of "You are off this (fucking) case!" is always spoken in English. Kontiovaara also inserts a lot of random English in his speech.
* GunPorn: In-universe. In one episode Repomies writes a novel that is a whopping three paragraphs long, and the third is basically a painfully accurate description of the gun that the main character uses to kill himself.
* HauntedHouse: One of the SpinOff episodes revolves around one owned by Repomies. He's trying to sell it, but it seems to be haunted by sketch characters created by Finnish comedian [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesa-Matti_Loiri Vesa-Matti Loiri]]. Pöysti actually ends up being possessed by them at the end of the episode and is filmed that way with his smartphone camera, complete with glowing eyes, only for it to turn out that [[CameraObscurer Pöysti had left an app on that turns everyone viewed with the camera into a llama and replaces their speech with bleating]].
* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: When Repomies finds out that the media might be portraying him as gay, he goes into this mode. The effect is, of course, the opposite of what he'd like.
* HiddenDepths: In one episode Pöysti is revealed to have a soft spot for crying people when he knows them on a personal level thanks to Neponen's baby.
** In another episode Helga turns out to be not as much of a man-hater she's portrayed as when she participates in a sting operation involving an elderly [[TheCasanova Casanova]] and is insulted that the man stole her diamond necklace and ran off while she was pretending to take a shower instead of waiting until they had sex.
** Routalempi further demonstrates that even his mild-manneredness has a breaking point when a guy driving an expensive German sports car purposefully crashes through his house when [[DisproportionateRetribution Routalempi wouldn't make a police report of his neighbour badmouthing his car online]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: An unintentional example: In one episode, Routalempi manages to find out that Repomies caused a diplomatic incident back in the 70s. Repomies made up a name for the suspect while being questioned about anti-Soviet tendencies, and a man with that name [[RealJokeName actually existed and was employed in the police force]]. When this guy was then being questioned, he ended up describing another nonexistent man as well... one who matched the look of Repomies.
* HypocriticalHumor: One episode focused on Pöysti's new neighbor, who was presented as eccentric, lazy, and having no concept of personal space. Cue Pöysti and Neponen walking off to the sunset and Pöysti unwittingly behaving exactly like the guy.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Demonstrated by Pöysti when he asks a SWAT team member to hand him his weapon and then questions what ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty'' rifle it resembles the most.
* INeedToIronMyDog: Inverted with Pöysti's new neighbour described below: one of his excuses for visiting Pöysti unannounced was "I came over here cause over there wasn't here".
* IWillOnlySlowYouDown: In one episode, the main characters are running away from an angry mob. Repomies falls over and Pöysti goes back for him, but he tells Pöysti to leave him behind, only to immediately change his mind:
-->'''Repomies:''' Go, leave me!
-->'''Pöysti:''' Okay. (''runs away'')
-->'''Repomies:''' Don't leave me!!
-->'''Pöysti:''' You missed your chance!
* IfYouCallBeforeMidnightTonight: Parodied. The presenter in an unseen informercial instead says "If you act fast, you might trip and hurt yourself, so please act at normal speed."
* ImpactSilhouette: Repomies does this in an early episode when he jumps through a window.
* InAWorld: Parodied: after his convoluted plan to seduce a woman fails miserably, Pöysti takes to drink. He ends up watching a movie, but thanks to the endless stream of trailers before it, he ends up with the generic trailer voice narrating his life inside his head. When it runs out of things to narrate when Pöysti sits on a couch without doing anything to make it shut up, it starts to rattle off a list of buttons on his TV remote instead.
* IncrediblyLamePun: In the episode "For and Against".
-->'''The teenage Internet troll's father''': You have the wrong man. I don't even know how to start Windows...
-->'''Pöysti''': No wonder. That's why it's called Windows. Hehe.
-->*''Tumbleweed.*''
-->'''Pöysti''': I've got to quit with telling Windows jokes.
* InkblotTest: Seen on the wall when Pöysti visits several psychiatrists, as is to be expected. Each one of them has a more-than-vague resemblance to something obscene.
** Also used by a con man as a distraction when his marks finally catch on to him and won't buy his excuses anymore. While the marks wonder what it looks like, he sneaks away.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Frequently employed by most characters in the show. And often lampshaded: When questioned about their current brand of ITL, their replies generally consist of "With logic!" and "With a very delusional person's logic!" In one episode a mob crew ends up committing group suicide, because it means the snitch they are after will keep looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
** Repomies is forced to retire in one episode, and he picks Pöysti as his successor after rattling on about what a horrible underling he is - simply because he was the last guy he told his goodbyes to, and didn't want to start tracking back the line.
* InteractiveNarrator: One variation of Pöysti's hangover voices, this one being the result of listening to a nature documentary about bullfrogs, who then naturally switches over to [[WildlifeCommentarySpoof narrating Pöysti's life in a similar manner.]]
* ItsAlwaysSpring: Inverted: it's always autumn. Lampshaded several times by Pöysti: He ends one of his theories with "people are miserable, and it's eternal autumn", and has the following exchange with Laakkonen, a depressed man who keeps causing property damage:
--> '''Kyösti''': Cheer up! It's a new day tomorrow!
--> '''Laakkonen''': No it isn't!
--> '''Kyösti''': Yes it is! 5th of September!
--> '''Laakkonen''': Shaddap!
** The season finally changes in the last episode of the regular series, as it starts snowing at the end, with the characters taking note of it.
* JurisdictionFriction: Subverted: soon after Pöysti and Neponen arrive on the scene of a large-scale diamond heist, the Finnish Security Police do so as well. They tell the Pasila crew to leave the case to them, which Pöysti is actually happy for, since he doesn't feel like working in the slightest at the moment. Also parodied, as one of the cops from the other bureau tells them to stop arguing about jurisdictions regardless. Repomies later gives Pöysti a rant about how the police should always argue jurisdictions, then charge in alone and take down the bad guys just like [[Film/DieHard John McClane]].
* MayDecemberRomance: One of the episodes revolves around this when Pöysti falls for an elderly woman, who tells interesting stories about her wild youth, has a sense of humor and gives Pöysti free cake and booze (in other words, a polar opposite of Repomies). He ultimately loses out to Repomies, because she feels old when spending time with Pöysti, whereas Repomies's endless droning about his youth occasionally makes her feel young.
* MeaningfulName: Jorma Hyvärinen, TheCasanova. His first name is pretty much the [[ADickInName Finnish counterpart for Dick.]]
* MediaScaremongering: An episode concerning bootlegged booze with poison in it eventually culminated in forbidding all alcohol in all of Finland. Kontiovaara hosts an expert on his show, and asks if they ought to panic now. The interviewee's response to his question is, "You get one fuckin' guess".
* {{Metaphorgotten}}: Often taken to the extreme with Repomies:
--> '''Repomies''': And don't think about my wife in the buck; secretly craving for her; in your secret dreams, playing in her garden of love, tasting the apples of love. Get out of the garden – it's my garden! My apples; leave my apples alone... and later we'll make apple jelly and thickly spread it on a toast.
** One of Neponen's attempts to get Pöysti to give up one of his endless arguments with Repomies more or less qualifies as this:
--> '''Neponen''': If you don't give up and go now, you'll be standing outside in the freezing rain until you lose all of your toes. And you'll fall forward. And hit your face.
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: A side plot in one of the early episodes: Pöysti spots a mole on his arm, freaks out and visits several doctors over the course of the episode. Subverted to a degree in that his exact state of distress varies wildly depending on the type of doctor diagnoses him even though most of them claim it to be harmless. A hospital physician leaves him worried because he doesn't take Pöysti seriously as he's apparently shown the exact same mole to him twice. Another one says it's extremely serious, but he just causes Pöysti to think there's nothing to worry about since he didn't come across as competent to him. A doctor at a private clinic does manage to calm his nerves since Pöysti thinks he's being paid to be professional, and a countryside doctor further makes him feel at ease since he comes off as being "down to earth" to Pöysti.
** Another episode takes a turn for MajorInjuryUnderreaction instead: after the speeder Makkonen runs over Pöysti, it causes a previously hidden [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teratoma teratoma]] to pop up and appear on his shoulder. When he finds out what it is, he starts treating the lump as an actual long-lost brother and won't have it removed even when it gets badly infected and threatens his life.
* MisplacedWildlife: In an episode when Repomies is shown with increased concern of dying, Pöysti interrupts one of his rants with "Relax, you're still in good shape!". Cue RuleOfFunny taking effect when Repomies points out the vulture hopping around behind him, pointing out that none of them live in Finland and then stating how his "stench of death has attracted them all the way from America!"
** See the entry for WeirdnessCensor below for a more literal example.
* TheMole: Pöysti signs up to be one in a prison, which ends up working out nicely for him despite his small stature, pacifier and high-pitched voice, mostly because he can come up with [[CutHisHeartOutWithASpoon colorful threats for everyone who gets in his way]], his overpowering ego and the theory that "if a guy much smaller than you threatens you in an over-elaborate way, they must have an ace up their sleeve." He also meets another mole in the prison, whom he reveals his identity to, but since the other guy is a slave of his habits, he rats Pöysti out almost immediately, getting both of them in trouble.
* MoralGuardians: A very specific example involving a repeat offender called Raine Makkula, who goes on a lyric-inspired rampage whenever he ends up listening folk singer Andy Suonsilmä's songs. Pöysti and co. attempt to stop him from listening to the singer's new album and confiscate the ones he already owns. Subverted in the end, as the artist ''himself'' agrees to stop making more songs since their effects are so harmful... which sends Makkula into yet another fit of rage.
* MovingTheGoalposts: Done by Repomies to Pöysti when he's about to go on a vacation and Repomies's relatives end up being somehow involved with a recently-opened legal brothel, and he tells Pöysti he can't leave until each one of them is dealt with, threathening to put up a website detailing Pöysti's exploits with a hooker working with said brothel who he had sex with while drunk and without knowing she was a prostitute. To be fair, Repomies is not doing it entirely to abuse his power, but whenever Pöysti gets one of them away from the place, another one pops up, either to be forced into working there, signs up to work there voluntarily, or just visits as a customer. Pöysti ultimately turns it against him by threathening to put up a website of his own about how all of Repomies' relatives are sex-obsessed maniacs who can't stay away from brothels, forcing Repomies to give up and finally let Pöysti go on his vacation.
* [[MurderSimulators Murder Simulator]]: The everpresent game Pöysti and Neponen play, giving out missions like "Johnson, the United Nations secretary is corrupt. Kill him and his family." later followed by "...and Johnson, kill the secretary's pets too. They may have learned from their master." It also doesn't seem to punish the players when they blast their way through what is implied to be a StealthBasedMission, only chastising them with a "Johnson, you killed everybody! Now cover it up, you sick bastard, you!"
** Lampshaded by Pöysti when the game gives him a mission to waterboard someone, not because of a crime committed, but because the player character just wants to know if they'd happen to know anything interesting:
-->'''Pöysti''': Is it just me, or have we moved in a more cynical direction from [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Super Mario]]?
* MushroomSamba: More or less an entire episode is devoted to this, where it manifests in what Pöysti calls "Phil Collins-hangover": the specifics being that the combination of an extremely annoying person and an extreme hangover causes Pöysti to see everyone with the head of the said annoying person, and the person who initially triggered this was, you guessed it, Phil Collins.
** Another variety of this is shown later in the form of the Virginia Heartbreaker, a ridiculously unhealthy hamburger that consists of [[ChocolateFrostedSugarBombs six hamburger buns deep-fried in boiling syrup]], four 2-pound steaks made from a cow fed entirely with gasoline, cheese breaded with cotton candy, and a whole package of bacon still in its plastic wrapping and just taking a single bite of it causes whoever eats it to experience a heart attack-induced DisneyAcidSequence.
* MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes: Pöysti claimed to have experienced this when he was run over by a speeder. He thought it was a "bad movie, I'd give 2 stars at most, and it had hardly any DVD extras".
** Shown in more detail when Routalempi is about to be shot. Conveniently enough, the last segment of his flashback is about the situation he's in, giving him a clue about how to escape.
* MysteryOfTheWeek: Although sometimes it's less mystery and more "annoying petty criminal of the week" or "hilariously absurd problem of the week".
* MySuitIsAlsoSuper: Parodied. Repomies wants to create a supercop, and starts feeding steroids to Pöysti. When a roided-up and bloodied Pöysti with torn-up clothes returns to the police station after being beaten up by an angry mob and is about to exact revenge on Repomies, the effects of the steroids wear off and he's back to his old self, complete with healed wounds and fixed up clothes.
* NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead: Stretched to a breaking point in one episode: a musician is announced to be dead and everyone save for Pöysti and the artist's brother (which naturally ends up with both of them getting in trouble) fondly reminisce about his past accomplishments, even though nobody can remember any of his songs beyond his single hit nor did they buy any of his records, and they probably wouldn't remember the one hit song either if it wasn't being played on the radio. In fact, when it turns out that [[spoiler: he faked his own death in a desperate attempt to make people remember him and buy at least SOME of his records so he wouldn't have to live in poverty]], he's immediately labeled as a self-absorbed dickhead who deserves to be forgotten immediately.
* NoFourthWall: The final ClipShow episode is this due to Kontiovaara serving as its narrator, but it's pushed even further when they show an alleged blooper involving Repomies's voice actor showing to work drunk which sparks an argument between the other voice actors. During this, [[LongSpeechTeaTime Pöysti and Repomies stand around killing time in random ways while staying silent]] and waiting for their voice actors to finish their argument so they can continue talking.
* NoMedicationForMe: Repomies tries this once in an early episode, even though being medicated doesn't have any drawbacks in his case - he just wants to find out what ultimately happens if he just keeps on rambling uninhibited. Cue Repomies jumping on his desk and his closet while rambling about monkeys and gorillas and their understanding of theory and practice and space-time continuum, until finally running out of steam and ending up lying on his couch while holding his aching head and telling himself to calm down.
** Also the easy rationale for why he later has to retire for the space of one episode; he gets ''too'' weird, even by earlier standards, when he decides not to take his medication at all any more.
* NoYouHangUpFirst: During one of the very few successful relationships Kyösti has.
* NonIndicativeName: Despite being a self-proclaimed SpinOff, Pasila 2.5 isn't really that different from the original series to really warrant being called a spin-off over just being the next set of seasons for the show: the only real differences to the previous seasons are the addition of Darja and Pöysti having a different voice actor. Sure, the Pasila police station gets demolished in the first episode of Pasila 2.5, but since it's back by the end of the episode, the event qualifies as a SnapBack at most.
* OnlySixFaces: Applies to most of the minor characters to varying extent. One character might end up being a member of a lynching mob in one episode and an obsessed fan of a female celebrity in another, complete with a different voice as well.
* OverlyLongGag: In an episode involving piracy, Pöysti admits he has a "HD or two" full of downloaded movies and asks Neponen to drop him off at his appartment so he can get rid of them. He then brings out an armful of hard drives and starts tossing them into a trash bin, goes back in for more once he's done, comes back out with a box full of them, tosses them into the trash individually as well and finally brings out one last load... with a wheelbarrow.
* OffscreenTeleportation: Parodied when Routalempi manages to escape TheDon Puurtinen, only to run right into him outside. He then angrily muses, "this is one concept I'll never be able to understand... I mean how, you were just... you couldn't have possibly... dammit."
* PacManFever: The video game in Pöysti's office is only ever played by rapidly mashing on the buttons with no stick or pad input.
** Then again, considering that the characters can use their cell phones by holding them in their hands, making varying facial expressions and getting the phones to push the buttons by themselves, judging from the constant beeping noises, maybe this is more of a case of InvisibleAnatomy.
** To the credit of the makers of the show, the video game sounds are entirely realistic and plausible.
* PaperThinDisguise: When Helga and Routalempi are shadowing a suspected bank robber, they have a piece of cardboard that reads "Civilian" covering the text "Police" in their police car.
* ParodyEpisode: The episode "25", an obvious PE of [[Series/TwentyFour 24]], right down to gratuitous lampshading of being able to travel between locations several miles apart within seconds, random minor characters having all the right clues, and an overly-violent guest character called Jack.
* PlayingSick: Certain one-off character abuses this to con varying types of social welfare. He claims he has arthritis, dust allergy, nickel phobia, lactose terror, ebola, and severe depression and that one of his eyes is hard of hearing.
* PlacebotinumEffect: A reverse version of this takes place in an episode where all the liquor stores in Finland end up being closed due to the threat of poisoned booze. A researcher theorizes that the people of Finland are so used to being drunk on Friday nights that they'll attain a state resembling drunkenness at that time even if they haven't drunk any alcohol at all. Not even the researcher himself believes in it, but miraculously enough, it actually does happen at a critical moment. Unfortunately the effect only lasts for a few minutes before it wears off, instantly restarting the conflict.
* PlanetOfSteves / InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: The Saksalas are an example of this. They all look identical, more or less wear the same kind of clothing, work in an office job and sound the same. This is lampshaded by Repomies, wondering out loud how many Saksalas there are. Later, when one of them who happen to visit the police station with a matter related to the case of the week, he's ignored completely. Instead, the characters start talking about all the Saksalas in general, the sightings of whom they've turned into their own CollectibleCardGame.
* PosthumousCharacter: Inspector Nikander, whom Pöysti replaces in the pilot after he was accidentally gunned down by Helga and Routalempi. The series opens [[StartsWithTheirFuneral with his funeral]] with Pöysti taking over his case about the pirate-record smugglers.
* PsychoSerum: Pöysti is subjected to a more mundane version of this when Repomies keeps feeding him steroids. The result is a muscular, broad-shouldered Pöysti with a [[{{Permastubble}} five'o-clock shadow]], much deeper voice and more sophisticated version of HulkSpeak...who breaks everything and everyone who crosses his way in any way, eats all the wild ducks in the city and [[RawEggsMakeYouStronger drinks entire cartons of eggs at the same time]], blacks out a large part of Helsinki while attempting to rape a power transformer and is finally chased out of town by an angry mob wielding TorchesAndPitchforks.
* PuttingOnMyThinkingCap: Reversed. It's called the Stupidity Association Method, and is instead used to come up with stupidest possible EpilepticTrees theories in situations where common sense fails. It more or less involves putting on a plastic bag on one's head and taking a roughing, presumably to cause minor asphyxiation to cause a temporary loss of brain function.
* PyroManiac: The main theme of one episode. There's a pyromaniac who's busy watching his kitchen burn, and a pyrophiliac whose bed is on fire and who wishes to share the details of his upcoming [[IncrediblyLamePun hot night of lovemaking]]. They also arrest another pyromaniac who manages to keep setting everyone close to him on fire as soon as they turn their eyes away from him and [[BlatantLies vehemently denying all of it]].
* RapidFireComedy: A big part of the series's humour is the fast dialogue.
* RecurringExtra: A pair of cops, [[FatAndSkinny one short and fat and another tall and skinny]]. They're mostly present when the situation calls for more cops than the main cast. They're not named and never have any dialogue and the most emotion they convey is an occasional frustrated glance.
* RecurringCharacter: Or more like a recurring voice. Many minor characters have the same, defiant and arrogant voice spoken by voice actor Juho Milonoff. In a making of-clip, Milonoff explains that series' director Atte Järvinen likes that certain voice so much that he asks Milonoff to do it quite often. Also lampshaded in the final episode.
* RedScare: The [[MurderSimulators Murder Simulator]] game Pöysti plays tells him to kill President Obama "because he's a socialist". It then proceeds to add, in an awkward voice, that it's [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial absolutely not because Obama's African-American]].
* RefugeInAudacity / CrossesTheLineTwice: One of the episodes involves people promoting a new extreme diet involving eating feces, which catches on to a major degree and ultimately food companies become interested enough to start manufacturing it themselves, while adding preservatives to the recipe. This leads to everyone complaining about "shit bought from store" not tasting nearly as good as the self-made variety.
* ReluctantRetiree: Repomies, in an episode where he was deemed too senile to run the station anymore, mostly because he can't think of anything else he'd rather be doing with his time. All attempts to try out new things fail for various reasons, such as being chased off of a bingo table due to not having enough "retirement cred" at that point and getting frustrated with another old woman who kept yelling "bingo!" during every single number and started screaming about being robbed or murdered whenever Repomies tried to correct her on the rules.
* {{Retirony}}: Pöysti's predecessor Nikander is a subject of this. He was killed on his last day of work by stray bullets fired by Routalempi and Helga.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: In one episode Pöysti's new neighbor is revealed to be this. He's been lacking in common sense for his entire life and lucking out in creating a hugely successful iPhone app and striking it rich just made him worse: he has a handlebar mustache and wears a bowler hat with a track suit and owns a pet swan which he keeps in his ball pit. His sister has also been conditioned into being able to interpret his fragmented 2-word sentences [[TranslationYes into much longer wholly legible ones]]. [[spoiler: It also turns out that he's the main culprit of the episode who shot the victim just because [[InsaneTrollLogic his left shoe annoyed him in some way.]]]]
* RousingSpeech: In "Legal Brothel" when a guy argues in a bar why they should go and make love to their male friends who have been employed in the titular brothel, despite not being gay:
--> Gentlemen, [[HeterosexualLifePartners platonically dear friends]]. Many of our friends from this bar have been employed in Pirinen's brothel. Now back door bandits are lining up to have their way with them. This must not happen. We have no other option than to do to our friends what they would do to us. -- (march music starts playing) We have to go there and make love to them in a respectful and beautiful way, until the gays grow tired of waiting their turn. And we must repeat the same thing tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow. And the day after that until they get fed up and our friends are left in peace. Alright, I know this may sound raunchy. But think it not as homosexuality between friends but [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII the Winter War]]. Where instead of Russians we have gays and instead of bullets we will be shooting something else!
* RunningGag: Several, including but not limited to:
** The briefing slides. In addition to showing Mrs. Repomies in indecent situations, people often tend to screw up with them in less disturbing ways, such as Pöysti using too many zeroes when describing the losses of unreported employment, apparently noticing it too late and crossing them out.
** Whenever one of the main characters appear in Kontiovaara's show, they're always doing something embarrassing, like Repomies screaming with a crazed expression or Pöysti taking a leak against a tree while drunk out of his mind.
** The movie {{Film/Amelie}} often ends up working its way into Pöysti's rants as one of the things he can't stand, especially if he's out on a date. Another character also states at one point that watching it countless times with his girlfriend is one of the numerous sacrifices he has to make to ultimately make his girlfriend happy.
** Pöysti never gets Neponen's first name right. This annoys Neponen greatly, given that he's pretty much Pöysti's best and only friend.
*** During Pöysti's half-year holiday in Far East, he doesn't really grow up as a person, but after he returns, he FINALLY gets Neponen's first name right.
** Pöysti borrowing money from Neponen, or telling him to buy him a pizza.
** People asking Pöysti why is he wearing a pacifier, to which Pöysti answers sarcastically. Mostly used in earlier episodes.
** Most episodes end with Pöysti and Repomies arguing on the roof. At some point Pöysti gets fed up and leaves, after which Repomies continues his monologue, which gets more delusional by every sentence.
** When Pöysti or another character tells someone else to not do something and they do it anyway, they'll always follow it up with "there, you went and did <whatever action Pöysti/another character told them not to do>"
* {{Ruritania}}: Albania. It's often used as a catch-all comparison point to Finland whenever someone wishes to excuse their own faults and blame the state, such as wasting all of ones funds on an unprofitable business venture.
** Inverted when Makkonen visits Kontiovaara's show. They instead come to the conclusion that Finland isn't enough like Albania since "Albania has no speed limits".
* SanityBall: Bounced around something fierce. Neponen is usually the most rational one, but he's also the only one besides Pöysti himself who thinks Pöysti is a genius. Pöysti may be the sanest one in turn when cynicism is called for in the face of something stupid that people find compelling. Repomies likes to point out Pöysti's problems and denials to the point that he sometimes has to admit them, only to immediately throw the imaginary ball back at Pöysti and start talking complete nonsense. Routalempi is usually shown as pretty useless and clueless, but he's also probably the happiest person around in contrast to everyone else's attitude problems. Helga, on the other hand, isn't usually drawn into the same petty arguments the rest of the characters often find themselves in and often ignores anything that doesn't directly distract her from her work, but as a result, she generally has a single-track mind and if any solution to any given situation involves violence in any way, she'll take it without question.
* SarcasticConfession: Pöysti has a tendency to hear voices inside his head while hung over. In one occasion, this internal voice actually gives him a critical clue in solving a case. The following then takes place:
--> '''Criminal:''' Splendid policing, my arch-nemesis Pöysti. I admit, I hid the loot in the very place. But before they take me away... do me a favor and tell me, what kind of an ingenious method did you use to figure out my perfect plan?
--> '''Pöysti:''' Well, let's just say that I got completely shitfaced and a voice in my head told me where the stuff is.
--> '''Criminal:''' Ah, Pöysti's famous brand of modest sarcasm. So wonderful.
* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: More or less the main concept behind an episode. Repomies sends the crew after Helga's aging father, because he's been bragging about posessing tons of weapons without a license. When they come for his guns, he barricades himself inside his home along with several of his friends, old flames and army buddies.
** Also a part of another episode, where the criminal in question alternately encourages and discourages the elderly to act like this, because of an over-elaborate scheme he has.
* SelfDeprecation: One of the episodes of the SpinOff has the characters talking about Series/TheXFiles, which Pöysti says he likes for the most part, save for the movies and Series/TheLoneGunmen, which he hates along with any other {{Spin Off}}s.
* SelfMadeMan: What the businessmen that keep getting suckered by scammer Pauli Mutikkala consider themselves to be, at least according to one of Pöysti's theories: They don't care as much about losing their cash as they do about not coming off as smart and business-savvy. Therefore, they refuse to report him to the police because that'd mean they'd admit they would've made an error in judgment.
* SexySecretary: In the second episode, Repomies's cell phone suddenly rings and a woman with a sensual voice says: "Time to take your meds". Repomies comments this with, "My secretary's taking care of me". The secretary has never been seen or referred to ever again, though, so apparently the writers decided to drop the character - or it was meant as an one-off joke in the first place.
* ShoutOut: In addition to the ones linked elsewhere on this page, here's a good number of more minor ones:
** In the episode "Stalker", a disillusioned stalker says this to his victim: "You aren't anything I thought you'd be! I can't introduce a woman like you to my [[{{Film/Psycho}} mummified mother, who lives in the basement!"]]
** The leader of a heist crew in an early episode is referred to as Jaska Jokunen, the Finnish name for [[ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}} Charlie Brown]].
** One of the things Pöysti makes the other characters do when he's temporarily made the new police chief and is abusing his power is making them say "Purple monkey dishwasher" in Finnish, a reference to the end result of a "broken telephone" game in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''.
** When Repomies accidentally kicks a chair into suspect's head, he apologizes and asks if he wants some Jaffa. Instead of being a nonsensical reference to Franchise/{{Stargate|Verse}}, it's referring to the unproven urban legend about a Finnish soft drink called Jaffa, said to be able to relieve stomach pain...[[DontExplainTheJoke but it wouldn't have made any difference anyway since the subject was hit in the head.]]
** Jack Jofa's last name in the ''[[Series/TwentyFour 24]]'' parody episode is a reference to Jack Bauer's last name. Both Jofa and Bauer are manufacturers of sporting equipment.
** In one episode, Repomies blabbers about "Rauno's juice party ending badly when the Black Angel takes him away". This is a reference to Finnish musician Tuomari Nurmio and his song "Musta enkeli" ("Black Angel").
** Also from the same episode:
--> '''Pöysti:''' Pekka, with all due respect, my age crisis is worse. It's worse than anyone's! Well, maybe not [[Film/TheCuriousCaseOfBenjaminButton Benjamin Button's.]]
** In season 3, episode 7, Pöysti mocks bank robbers for their lack of preparation and makes a reference to ''Film/OceansEleven'' in regards of a possible method of pulling off the heist while doing so.
** In one episode, Pöysti complains about the "newest [[Franchise/JamesBond Bond movie]]" to the ticket vendor in a movie theatre. Said vendor looks and sounds a lot like the Squeaky Voiced Teen in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' and is also working at the same job SVT's been seen in.
** The entrance of the main building of the Finnish National Football Association is guarded by a pair of [[Franchise/StarWars stormtroopers]].
** Pöysti meets a bunch of sports groupies in the same episode. One of them acts as a spokesperson and the rest of them just agree to everything she says with an exclamation of "Ni!" (which actually is one way to voice your agreement in Finnish). Pöysti calls them [[Creator/MontyPython "the whores who say Ni!"]] after he rounds them up.
** One of Pöysti's {{Dream Sequence}}s is a blantant reference to ''Film/{{Casablanca}}''.
** Episode "[[Film/{{Inception}} Non, je ne regrette rien]]" is an episode-long ShoutOut to Inception and films of Creator/MNightShyamalan.
*** Also in the same episode: A StrawCritic by the name of Peter von [[PunnyName Schnabb]]. He's named after well-known Finnish movie expert Peter von Bagh, but also bears a [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed a passing resemblance to]] Creator/RogerEbert.
** In one episode, after Repomies attempts to stop Routalempi from investigating police archives because they might have dirt about him in there, he proceeds to toss down a smoke bomb and shoots a GrapplingHookPistol into the ceiling, with its hook shaped like a [[{{Franchise/Batman}} Batarang]].
** Finnish grocery company Saarioinen has a long-standing slogan of "Our moms cook so yours don't have to." One episode twists the slogan into "Our moms shit so yours don't have to".
** In the episode "Virginia Heartbreaker", the owner of the Virginia Woffelhouse restaurant is a man by the name of Reino K. Music/{{Sepultura}}.
** When Repomies is undergoing his DisneyAcidSequence mentioned above, the song that plays during it and the characters dance to is "Twiggy" by Music/PizzicatoFive.
* SideEffectsInclude: When Repomies keeps switching medication, one of the noticeable side effects is that he instantly forgets why he was yelling at Pöysti.
** Another (thankfully unseen) effect is mentioned when Repomies states he's bought cheap bootleg drugs from Estonia and laments that while he's saved a pretty penny, he grew a pair of breasts... on his back.
** An another batch of bootleg drugs causes him to burst into song the moment he swallows them.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism: The series is pretty deep down in the cynical end, despite being an outright comedy. [[WorldOfJerkass None of the characters have a life that goes anywhere (though they're usually in denial about it), almost everything they do is meaningless waste of time, and Finland is full of self-pitying, violent alcoholics.]]
* SoBadItsGood: In-universe; Kyösti [[DiscussedTrope goes on at length about this trope]] during one of his many failed dates. It mostly involves his interest towards "shitty B-movies" such as ''Film/Plan9FromOuterSpace'' and trying to make [[ForeignQueasine microwave bacon-chocolate-tofuweiner-marmelade-risotto his friend got him from Japan]] for himself and his current girlfriend for dinner just because of this.
* SorryImGay: One episode involved a character who thought everybody was having sex with his wife. The mayor of the guy's home town had to resort to this to clear himself of suspicion.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Helga is the only female officer in the police station.
** Averted in the spin-off as it introduces a new policewoman called Darja.
* StagParty: One episode revolves around Neponen renewing his wedding vows, which naturally involves Pöysti having to arrange one for him with three of his friends. They have plenty of experience for throwing such parties and know that while the generic "get drunk, do something stupid and risky that ends in a trip to the ER" party has been done over and over again, it's what the party will ultimately devolve into anyway, as better and more unique ideas are ridiculously expensive and all the cheaper ones aren't worth doing. Pöysti still doesn't believe them and comes up with several unique ideas, but all of them are a combination of something extremely dangerous, physically impossible, utterly illegal or unrealistically expensive, forcing him admit defeat and go with the default option.
* StalkerShrine: An episode named after the titular Stalker has a house that's practically converted to this.
* StalkerWithACrush: Same as above.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Helga and Routalempi suspect that an interview of Repomies is trying to paint him as a closeted gay man. They make the mistake of telling their (incorrect) theory to him. He thus endlessely reminds the camera crew that he isn't gay, which, of course, leads to the StreisandEffect and he is forced to either "come out" and ''pretend'' he is one or lose his credibility. He goes with the former. While the gang manages to convince the crew to leave his ramblings to the cutting room floor, the news somehow find their way to Kontiovaara's desk.
* TakeANumber: A popular book author says this to Pöysti when he wants to thank the author for changing his worldview for the better with his book. It's not just a phrase: [[VisualPun He actually has a queue system set up in his house.]]
* TemptingFate: When Repomies chastises Pöysti for getting the dog shot in "Orphaned Dogs", because he dreads retribution from animal rights activists.
--> '''Repomies:''' They will make our lives a living hell when they hear about this!
--> '''Pöysti:''' Bah, nonsense. I mean, is there any way they could hear about this? (switches on the TV)
--> '''Kontiovaara on TV:''' Good morning. Last night there was a siege situation in the city outskirts. Human casualties were avoided, but unfortunately the family dog perished in the police raid. Ah, goddammit, we here on this show are absolutely broken up about this.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Two guests in Kontiovaara's show argue if it's ethical to send Finnish children to the slums of Sao Paolo to learn football. Other wonders if it's ethical to send them to France as well to make them into great mimes and artists. The football guy agrees, and Kontiovaara excitedly voices his approval as well, following up with, "This is daytime television, bitches!".
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: Repomies is put into a dilemma like this when a corrupt businessman named Tauno Muikku bribes him with a sailboat. He then spends 3 days sailing with Routalempi on his new boat trying to decide whether or not to accept it before ultimately crashing it into a rock, allowing him to easily dismiss its value as a bribe and resume his investigations with a clear conscience.
* TortureAlwaysWorks, JackBauerInterrogationTechnique: Initially parodied, then played straight, then finally subverted: Repomies starts off with just kicking a suspect's shins, stating that he isn't sadistic enough to do anything worse. Then he kicks a chair out of frustration and it rebounds off a wall into the suspect, he starts apologizing profusely. Later, another suspect is brought in and Repomies attempts the shin-kicking method again and gets a confession. Pöysti points out that he just made up the said information just to make Repomies stop. When Repomies doesn't believe him, Pöysti demonstrates by making up an alternate interpretation of events and [[RuleOfFunny starts beating the suspect's head in with a chair until the perp agrees that his address is the correct one]]. Once the situation switches over to [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique Jack]] [[strike:Bauer]] [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique Jofa Interrogation Technique]], he threatens to move on to power tools and [[NoodleImplements frozen beavers]], which seems to visibly shake the suspect. Before the perp can spill any actual info however, his lawyer barges in and anesthetizes him to the point that he's immune to all and any pain.
* JustForFun/TheTropelessTale: InUniverse. Pöysti's description of what his novel is going to be like consists of nothing but negations of both sides, from just about every axis of description. Naturally, it doesn't amount to anything.
* TrashTheSet: The very first episode of the SpinOff starts with the Pasila police station being demolished to make way for a nightclub, only for the station to be rebuilt with a new look by the end of the episode.
* TroubledFetalPosition: Pöysti when in Phil Collins hangover.
* TrueArtIsIncomprehensible: In-universe. Embodied by Reetta Ruusu, whose idea of interpretive dance consists of titles such as "Vagina Dialogue", "The three rooms of manic depression" and "A placenta-eating bourgeoisie subjugates Jeanne d'Arc's lesbian twin sister", while the shows themselves consist of simply wandering around the stage while torturing oneself in lots of imaginative ways. While Pöysti hates Reetta's guts and is unable to stop her from going through with the show like he was initially told to do due to how she constantly endangers herself and her dancers in the rehersals and blows up large chunks out of the buildings she does the show in to "fix the acoustics", he still ultimately goes to see hew show and is [[SubvertedTrope actually mesmerized by what he sees, considers it to be a masterpiece with nothing to add or to take away from it and is about to experience some form of personal enlightenment]]... [[RunningGag when Reetta suddenly drops dead on the stage and is revived afterwards.]]
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: Pöysti, when he ends up being promoted as the new chief due to Repomies' forced retirement. He claims Routalempi, Helga and Neponen are fighting against his authority when they point out he's the only one who did the very things he implies them to be guilty of (such as complaining about the quality of leadership, ignoring orders and watching TV at work). He also tells them to solve pretty much every unsolved case in Finland and expects it be done by next day. He also hires a sculptor to make a statue of him in a toga with olive branches on his head, and stands on chairs while holding speeches to appear taller.
* TyopOnTheCover: "Lototeoria"[[note]]"Lotery theory"[[/note]], a book on how to win at lottery. The writer claims that the printers screwed up and he had no money to fix it, [[BlatantLies despite the fact that he got over 25 million from the lottery.]]
* UnfortunateNames: The first season episode features a girl named Homo-Petteri. The first part is explained by her father, because "homo is Latin for 'human'", but the second part is a common male name, with no explanation given. Several characters mock the name for its stupidity.
* UnusualEuphemism: With some {{pun}}s in episode ''25''.
--> '''Repomies:''' (showing a slide) Here's the City of Helsinki.
--> '''Pöysti:''' [[EmbarrassingSlide That's your wife naked in a garden swing!]]
--> '''Repomies:''' What? Goddamnit! Holiday slides! But, under these special, terrorism-related circumstances, it will have to do. It's my naked wife, but you'll imagine that it's the City of Helsinki. But don't look at her Etu-Töölö!
** Etu-Töölö is a district of Helsinki, meaning "Töölö in the front". "Töölö in the back" also exists.
* VerbalTic: The brothel owner Pirinen constantly adds "like so" to everything he says.
* WeirdnessCensor: For whatever reason, a plastic surgery clinic has a dead, decapitated whale carcass right outside its entrance, despite whales being rarely if ever seen anywhere near Helsinki. Nobody notices it or comments on it in any way.
