''Bump in the Night'' was a StopMotion animated series by Danger Productions and the Creator/AmericanBroadcastingCompany's in-house studio Greengrass Productions, lasting from September, 1994 to December, 1995. It covers the adventures of Mr. Bumpy ([[Creator/JimCummings1952 Jim Cummings]]), a small green monster living under the bed of a 10 year old boy, and his friends Squishington (Creator/RobPaulsen), a blue monster that lives in the bathroom's toilet tank, and Miss Molly Coddle (Gail Matthius [[note]]a ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' alumnus from its infamous sixth season[[/note]]), the comfort doll who belongs to the boy's sister. They spend their time getting into all sorts of hijinks while dealing with Destructo (Cummings), a toy robot who militantly enforces rules, and trying to avoid the Closet Monster.

The development of the series began as a series of AdBumpers for ABC's Saturday morning lineup in 1993, possibly, the reason he's called Mr. Bumpy is because he was originally used as a character for bumpers alongside Squishington and Molly. The series lasted for two seasons, and concluded with a 90 minute long Christmas Special. The format of a usual episode included two cartoons and a "Karaoke Cafe" segment where the characters sung a song.
----
!!''Bump in the Night'' provides examples of:
* AbhorrentAdmirer: The Germ Girl from "Adventures in Microbia" is initially this to Squishington, but Squishy ends up loving her back by the end of the episode.
* AchievementsInIgnorance: In "Cold Turkey", the defrosted turkey is apparently capable of flight due to not knowing that turkeys can't fly.
* ActionDressRip: In "Comfort Schmumfort", Molly rips part of her dress off to wear as a headband when she prepares to rescue Bumpy and Squishington from Sleemoth and Gloog.
* AesopAmnesia: Despite learning a lesson in about every episode, Bumpy always goes back to being, greedy, selfish and impulsive by the start of the next episode.
* AIIsACrapshoot: Destructo. All he wants to do is maintain order, but that’s pretty hard when you’re dealing with Bumpy.
* AlasPoorYorick: In "Farewell, 2 Arms", Squishington finds Molly's head and picks it up, declaring "Alas, poor Molly. I knew her well."
* AmbiguouslyJewish: Phil Silverfish, who has no Jewish characteristics besides a heavy Yiddish accent. Later, it becomes not-so-ambiguous as he gets the only Hanukkah-themed song in the Christmas special, where he sings about his turbo-powered dreidel.
* AndImTheQueenOfSheba: In "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy", one of the Cute Dolls makes this kind of statement in response to Molly Coddle claiming that she is the new pageant director.
-->'''Cute Doll''': If you're pageant director, I'm Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
* AnvilOnHead: The humor is there, though bowling balls and safes are more often used than actual anvils.
* ArtificialLimbs: Molly Coddle has these, in a way, given her owner's tendency to tear her apart and requiring repairs on a regular basis. A more straight example would be Juaquin the Earthworm from "Twas the Night Before Bumpy", who wants a set of robotic hands to remedy his lack of arms. [[spoiler:He gets them]].
* ArtShift: Some scenes are animated in 2D instead of claymation.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateInterruption: Used in "Dr. Coddle, M.D." when Squishington has a radio hooked up to him and starts spouting out random phrases that manage to make up hilarious sentences.
-->'''Squishington''': Hello, boys and girls. It is my great pleasure to give you...Indigestion! Cure...the news of the hour. Tornadoes devastate...this hilarious tune from France! Jerry Lewis...and Boris Yeltsin say...Elvis has left the building!
* BabyMorphEpisode: Mr. Bumpy becomes a baby in "Baby Jail".
* BabysittingEpisode: The episode "Baby Snail" has Mr. Bumpy forced to look after a baby snail while Squishington looked for the baby snail's mother.
* BananaInTheTailpipe: Mr. Bumpy shoves a potato into the tailpipe of Sleemoth and Gloog's flying saucer so that their spaceship blows up once the two aliens are in orbit in "It Sang from Beyond the Stars".
* BangFlagGun: In "Journey to the Center of the Lungfish", Captain Jetlag fires a cannon at Mr. Bumpy, Squishington and Molly Coddle, only for the cannon to let out a "Bang" flag.
* BedsheetLadder: "Baby Jail" features a variant where the escape plan attempted by a de-aged Mr. Bumpy and the other babies held in the crib involves making a ladder out of the babies' cloth diapers.
* BigBadEnsemble: Destructo and the Closet Monster are both threats to Mr. Bumpy and his friends, but they seldom work together and have different methods - Destructo only harms those that break the rules and the Closet Monster is just a mindless beast. There were also some episodes where Bumpy and friends were menaced by alien duo Sleemoth and Gloog, who tried to conquer Earth in each of their appearances.
* BigEater[=/=]ExtremeOmnivore: Bumpy. He can eat literally anything, and most often eats something implausible for comedic effect. He's known for randomly eating some inocuous object in some scenes, and in an episode where he's forced to hide from the closet monster, he eats an entire emergency stockpile of socks within seconds.
* BigNo:
** In "Night of the Living Bread", the Bread lets out a tremendous "NO!" right before Bumpy hits him with a fling of peanut butter.
** The Cute Dolls scream "no" at the end of "Party Poopers" after Mr. Bumpy promises to go to every party they ever throw.
* BigShutUp: In "Night of the Living Bread", Mr. Bumpy does this to the narrator:
-->'''Mr. Bumpy''': '''''WILL YOU SHUT UP?!'''''
* TheBlank: In the episode "Loss of Face", Squishington lost his face after scrubbing it with the bathroom towel and ends up faceless until Mr. Bumpy can get it back. Before they manage to do so, Bumpy draws temporary faces on Squishington with a marker.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Happens very often. For example, in "Made in Japan", Squishington is unable to understand Turbo Totrenoid, who only speaks Japanese... until he realizes there are [[FunWithSubtitles subtitles]].
* BoxAndStickTrap: "Bumpy the Untrappable" has the boy try to capture Mr. Bumpy. One of the traps attempted is the classic "box held up by stick that the prey is intended to knock over" trap. Bumpy inadvertently foils it by instead pushing Squishington into the trap.
* TheBurlesqueOfVenus: One of the ABC commercial bumpers the show was derived from had Mr. Bumpy paint a picture of Molly Coddle while she was standing on an oyster shell and posing like the painting ''The Birth of Venus''.
* TheBusCameBack: Little Robot was mailed back to Japan in "Made In Japan", but returned in the episode "Made In Japan II". However, she did make background appearances between episodes.
* CallBack: Oh so many. Every character in the first season gets at least one re-appearance in season 2. The cast of the entire run of the show appears as audience members in the karaoke segments. Also, every character gets a small part in the Christmas special as part of Molly's Christmas pageant. Possibly this was as a result of the need to re-use puppets for budget reasons.
* CaptivityHarmonica: "Baby Jail" features one of the babies trying to escape from the crib playing a harmonica as a FunnyBackgroundEvent.
* {{Cephalothorax}}: Mr. Bumpy and the Living Bread from "Night of the Living Breath" are both examples of this.
* ChildHater: Bumpy is one, specifically hating babies, but changes his tune in both "Baby Snail" and "Baby Jail." When it comes to older children, he seems to be pretty much okay with them.
* ChristmasEpisode: An hour-long Christmas special entitled "Twas the Night Before Bumpy" was made at the end of the series' run.
* CirclingBirdies: "In the Bowl of the Squishy Prince" has yellow birds circle around Bumpy's head after he gets concussed. Humorously, he ''eats'' one of the birds and later helps himself to one when the same thing happens to Squishington.
* CompetitionCouponMadness: In "Made in Japan", Mr. Bumpy saves box tops from Choco Space Flakes cereal in order to get a Turbo Totrenoid robot. When Bumpy is disappointed by the robot arriving in the mail appearing to be smaller and less fierce-looking than advertised, he and Squishington decide that they'll send the robot back for a full refund and then get started eating enough Sugar Frosted Shark Puffs to get the amount of box tops needed to exchange for a toy submarine.
* ContemporaryCaveman: Squishington discusses this in "Cold Turkey" when he panics at the ramifications of the turkey in the refrigerator thawing out and brings up that he once saw a movie about a caveman that wound up in modern times after being frozen for a gazillion years.
* CulturalCrossReference: The episodes "Made in Japan" and "Made in Japan II" feature a cute toy robot shipped from Japan, who speaks Japanese and doubles in size not unlike a Transformer.
* CutHisHeartOutWithASpoon: In "Twas the Night Before Bumpy", Molly Coddle's slipping into becoming a PrimaDonnaDirector when placed in charge of the Christmas pageant begins when she threatens to tape a hairy wombat to everyone.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: In Farewell 2 Arms, Molly's arm gets accidentally ripped off and Bumpy gives her a spare ape arm as a replacement to try and cheer her up. She then replaces her other arm with a hair dryer from the Cuties, her legs with Destructo's, and her torso with a tin can, getting deeper and deeper into a power trip until she ends up replacing her own head and creating an entirely new monster.
* DependingOnTheWriter: It varies in every episode whether Squishington is more intelligent (or at least has more common sense) than Mr. Bumpy or if he is dumber than Bumpy. For example, Squishington is depicted as the brighter of the pair in "Sock it to Me" and "Better Homes and Garbage", both of which have him trying to get Mr. Bumpy to stop making shortsighted decisions, whereas "Danger: Unexploded Squishington" has him getting himself into trouble because he failed to listen to Bumpy's warnings about eating in the dark.
** It works the other way around for Mr. Bumpy. In "Adventures in Microbia" Bumpy, who usually hates cleanliness, is all too eager to help Squishy shrink to microscopic size to fight off germs in the bathroom.
* DespairEventHorizon: While it’s more PlayedForLaughs, Mr. Bumpy comes pretty close to this in “Hocus Dopus”, after trying (and failing) numerous times to pull a rabbit out of a hat to cheer up a sick Squishington. Bumpy thinks Squishy will never forgive him (despite Squishy saying to his face numerous times that he does), and starts to head towards the Closet Monster’s lair, fully intending to ''[[DrivenToSuicide feed himself to it]]''. Thankfully, Squishington was able to sneak a bunny slipper into the hat and convince Mr. Bumpy to try one more time before he did anything drastic.
* DiegeticSoundtrackUsage: Squishington whistles the show's theme song at the beginning of the episode "Auntie Matta".
* DisneyDeath:
** Occurs in "Journey to the Center of the Lungfish". Captain Jetlag at first seems to die when he allows Bumpy, Squishington, and Molly to escape while he goes down the lungfish's intestine, but he ends up being spat out by the lungfish unharmed at the end of the episode.
** Juaquin Gusanito Sin Manos appears to be crushed by one of the pillars at Stonehenge, but it's later revealed he survived by ducking back into the hole he dug.
* DistaffCounterpart: The Christmas special gave Destructo a girlfriend named Destructette, who resembles Destructo, but with breasts, hair, and lipstick.
* DontTryThisAtHome: Parodied and played with a few times on the show.
** In the episode "Party Poopers", Molly says to the audience "Kids, don't try this at home" before jumping into a toaster with Mr. Bumpy.
** There is a Karaoke Cafe song dedicated to this that is even called "Don't Try This at Home" and has Mr. Bumpy warning the audience not to imitate his dangerous stunts.
** Another Karaoke Cafe song, called "Making Music is Fun", at one point has Bumpy state "Kids, I want you to try this at home."
** From "Danger: Unexploded Squishington."
-->'''Mr. Bumpy''': Don't try this at home, kids. [[TrustMeImAnX I get the big bucks for this.]] Now remember, if you hear something going [[TitleDrop Bump in the Night]], call a parent, or someone you can trust! and let them....get eaten by a burglar or a monster, or whatever it is, y'know...
* DonutMessWithACop: In "Loss of Face", Mr. Bumpy dresses as a police officer while asking Squishington about what happened to his lost face and takes a bite out of a donut.
* DownerEnding: A few, though they are all [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzagged.]]
** "Love's Labor Bumped" ends with Mr. Bumpy getting beaten up by Destructo and Molly Coddle. [[AssholeVictim Bumpy was however being extremely obnoxious and rude to both of them through the whole episode, so it isn't unjustified.]]
** "Bump and Roll" ends with the Cute Dolls hurling Bumpy and Squishy into the sun. Though this is PlayedForLaughs and naturally NegativeContinuity ensures they survive.
** A lot of episodes end with random explosions as punctuation marks, a trend prabably launched in "Danger: Unexploded Squishington" when the [[ChekhovsGun clock extracted from Squishy's belly really does turn out to be a bomb.]]
* DunceCap: In "Story Problems", Mr. Bumpy puts on a dunce cap while bemoaning his inability to redo the boy's homework after he ate it.
* EarlyBirdCameo: The three main characters were used in the commercial bumpers for ABC's Saturday morning line-up a year before a show was created for them.
* EasilyThwartedAlienInvasion: Sleemoth and Gloog always try to invade Earth when they appear, but they always get beaten easily by Bumpy and his friends.
* EldritchAbomination: The Closet Monster, which is a living pile of clothes, would be this from the characters' point of view.
* EpisodeTitleCard: Played straight with the episodes, but averted with the Karaoke Cafe songs, which aren't even given titles in the end credits. They do, however, get titles in a VHS release of several of the songs as well as the official song album.
* EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: In "Gum Crazy", Mr. Bumpy's heart appears as Mr. Bumpy with a mustache and a French accent, playing with the idea that the heart represents love and that the French are considered a romantic culture.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: When meeting his brain in "Gum Crazy", Mr. Bumpy is confused to find that his brain is a lot smaller than he expected. Doesn't stop the brain from putting up a decent fight, though.
* ExpositoryThemeSong: "I'm a wild green guy livin' under the bed, I'll gobble up a sock before you turn your head..."
* ExtraLongEpisode: There were two episodes that diverged from the series' usual ThreeShorts format of two ten-minute episodes and a Karaoke Cafe segment.
** "Party Poopers" is one twenty-minute episode and a Karaoke Cafe song.
** "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy" runs for one hour and four minutes.
* TheFaceless: We never see the faces of the family of four that lives in the house the series takes place, even when Bumpy and friends directly interact with them.
* FaceOnAMilkCarton: In "To Sleep, Perchance to Burp", when Molly warns Bumpy that no toy that's entered the domain of the Closet Monster has ever made it back, we see a shot of a milk carton with a picture of a teddy bear labeled "missing".
* FalseTeethTomfoolery: "Nothing But the Tooth" has shenanigans ensue from Mr. Bumpy losing his dentures and said dentures going on a spree devouring everything in sight.
* FantasticVoyagePlot: In "Gum Crazy", Mr. Bumpy and Squishington travel inside... [[ItMakesSenseInContext Mr. Bumpy, after he swallows a piece of pink bubblegum.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: Molly wears only one stocking, has mismatched arms, and is missing eyelashes over one of her eyes.
* FluffyTamer: Molly Coddle attempted to make the Closet Monster docile in "Comforting the Uncomfortable".
* FriendshipSong: One of the Karaoke Cafe segments had Mr. Bumpy and Squishington sing "Why Do You Like Me?", which is all about how the two get along very well in spite of their differences.
* FountainOfYouth: Mr. Bumpy ends up turning into a baby after some babies force him into drinking baby formula in "Baby Jail".
* FryingPanOfDoom: In "Hocus Dopus" after Mr. Bumpy accidentally pulls out a landsquid that begins attacking him, Squishington tries to save Bumpy by attacking the squid with a frying pan and a spatula.
* TheGhost: Santa Claus is mentioned several times in the Christmas special, but he never actually appears.
* GoKartingWithBowser: Destructo and the Closet Monster decide to take a break from tormenting Mr. Bumpy and relax with him at the Karaoke Cafe in the episode "Long, Long Day." In addition, the aliens Sleemoth and Gloog, the Living Bread, and the Germs from "Adventures in Microbia" frequently make cameos at the Karaoke Cafe even though they are established villains.
* GoodAngelBadAngel: Mr. Bumpy has two shoulder devils goad him into taking all of Santa's presents for himself in "Twas the Night Before Bumpy".
* HeroAntagonist: Destructo often takes this role, as he is obsessed with order and justice and often antagonizes Mr. Bumpy for breaking the rules.
* HookHand: In "Journey to the Center of the Lungfish", one of the boxes Captain Jetlag checks on the list of attributes common to pirates is having a hook for a hand.
* GrandfatherParadox: Happens in "Gum Trouble", where Mr. Bumpy's attempt to steal chewing gum from his own stomach causes a temporal loop that could destroy the world.
* [[RedOniBlueOni Green Oni, Blue Oni]]: Bumpy and Squishy.
** In one of the karaoke segments, they even appear together in a yin-yang.
* HumanPopsicle: Mr. Bumpy's Auntie Matta from the episode of the same name gives this as her reason for why she never saw her nephew in a while, saying that she got caught in an avalanche during the Gold Rush and thawed out by the time of the episode.
* HypocriticalHumor:
** In "Story Problems", the boy claims to be good at spelling and then misspells "dead" as "D-E-D".
** Molly Coddle admonishes Mr. Bumpy for trying to use a baseball bat indoors because someone could get hurt in "Beauty and the Bump", but she ends up accidentally hurting people anyway because screams of pain can be heard after she tosses the bat away.
* IWantSong: There are two Karaoke Cafe songs that follow this. "Gotta Have It" is about Mr. Bumpy describing how greedy he is, while "Comfort Schmumfort" initially has Molly sing about how she wants a break from being a comfort doll until finding out that she just can't bear to go without helping injured people.
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: In "Made in Japan", Little Robot is hunted down by one of her sisters after the company that makes her orders all Turbo Totrenoids recalled and destroyed. Little Robot's sister has several blatant differences in appearances in addition to looking similar to Little Robot, but when she is reprogrammed to abandon her mission to destroy Little Robot, she looks exactly like Little Robot but with the parts colored red being colored purple instead.
* IdentityAmnesia: This technically happens to Destructo in the episode "Destructo's Flipside" after his batteries are knocked out and mistakenly put back in reverse. He does not forget who he is, but he ends up forgetting his obsession with law and order, believes that he is meant to make people happy, and is a lot nicer to Mr. Bumpy than he usually is.
* IllBeYourBestFriend: In "Hide and Go Freak", Squishington tries to get Molly Coddle to play the titular game by offering that he and Mr. Bumpy will be her best friends in exchange. Bumpy points out to Squishington that they already are Molly's best friends.
* ItsPersonal: Even after hearing his friends complain about his Auntie Matta overstaying her welcome in "Auntie Matta", Bumpy doesn't agree with them that she needs to leave until his aunt scares him by revealing that the boy's socks have been shrunk.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Mr. Bumpy can be greedy and selfish at times, but he always shows remorse when his actions cause harm to his friends and wishes for them to be happy. One episode even had him trying to find a bunny to cheer up a sick Squishington and is so upset by his repeated failures to acquire one that he tries to get himself eaten by the Closet Monster even as Squishington tells him that it's okay he let him down.
* KnightTemplar: Destructo, who goes to extreme lengths to keep everyone from breaking the rules.
* LamePunReaction: In "Loss of Face", a bunch of bugs who grabbed hold of Squishington's face start referring to Squishington as "the foretold one" after Squishy regains his face. Mr. Bumpy asks the bugs if they didn't mean "the four-toed one" while pointing out that he himself has four toes, prompting the leader to gesture the other bugs to continue torturing Bumpy.
* LargeHam: It is rare for Mr. Bumpy to say anything without shouting at the top of his lungs. Squishington and Molly can also be hammy at times.
* LastOfHisKind: As of the episode "Made in Japan II", Little Robot and her sister are the last remaining members of their kind in existence due to the factory that made them recalling and destroying the rest of them.
* LivingToys: Molly Coddle, Destructo, and the Cute Dolls are all living toys.
* LookAlikeLovers: In "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy", Destructo's Christmas present is a girlfriend named Destructette. For all intents and purposes, Destructette is a female version of Destructo, the only differences being that she has lipstick, hair, and breasts.
* LookBehindYou:
** Mr. Bumpy occasionally does this, telling Destructo that he sees Molly's Comet in "Long, Long Day" and claiming to see a two-headed, pink polka dot monkey riding a unicycle in "Not a Leg to Stand On."
** When Bumpy unconvincingly tries to hide the wig he used to disguise himself as Molly in "Love's Labor Bumped", Molly tricks him into turning around by claiming that there's a sock behind him.
* LovableCoward: Squishington. He even gets a Karaoke Cafe song about how to tell monsters to go away and don't come back.
* MattressTagGag: When Squishington needs a tissue in the "Destructo's Flipside" episode, Bumpy is loath to give up one from his collection and instead grabs a mattress tag. Right after Squishington blows his nose, [[LivingToys Destructo]] busts them.
-->'''Destructo''': Red alert! Red alert! You'll pay dearly for this heinous crime.
* LyingFingerCross: When Squishington reminds Bumpy that he promised Juaquin Gusanito Sin Manos a set of bionic arms in "Twas the Night Before Bumpy", Bumpy replies that he had his toes crossed when he made the promise.
* MeatOVision:
** "Nothing but the Tooth" has Mr. Bumpy's dentures see Bumpy and Squishington as a green sock and a blue sock respectively. Bumpy also hallucinates Squishy as a blue sock when his inability to eat socks without his teeth drives him bonkers.
** "Water Way to Go" has a dehydrated Squishington hallucinate Mr. Bumpy as a bottle of spring water and desperately attempt to drink him.
* MediumAwareness: Bumpy often expresses how he knows he's in a cartoon.
** Goes into NoFourthWall territory in "Night of the Living Bread," when Bumpy finds out the show's started after hearing the applause and title card's music cue.
* MediumBlending: The show combines stop-motion animation (most of the characters) with live action footage (the house and the family who live in it alongside the main characters) and even early computer graphics (all of the 2D animation).
* MirrorCrackingUgly: In "Beauty and the Bump", Mr. Bumpy is shown to be capable of cracking a mirror with his ugliness and attempts to use his ugliness to break the antique princess doll's glass case.
* MundaneSolution: In "Comforting the Uncomfortable" Bumpy and Squishy bring a stop to the Closet Monster (who's made entirely out of dirty clothing) by spraying him with starch.
* MusicalEpisode: Whilst almost every episode features a musical segment called the Karaoke Cafe as the third (or, more rarely, second) sketch, the second season includes several sketches that center on big musical numbers; "Long Long Day", "It Sang From Beyond The Stars", "Bump and Roll", "I Got Needs", "When The Music Starts" and "Water Way to Go".
* MrViceGuy: Bumpy is ruled by greed. Greed over what? That changes from episode to episode.
* NailsOnABlackboard: In "It Came from the Closet (And Wouldn't Leave)", Mr. Bumpy tries to drive the Closet Monster away by making various irritating noises, one of them being that he uses his fingers to scratch a chalkboard.
* NeatFreak: Squishington. Wouldn't you love to have a little blue monster keeping your toilet neat?
* NoodleIncident:
** In "When the Music Starts", Mr. Bumpy asks Squishington if he is still mad about the time he put broccoli in his underwear.
** "Made in Japan II" has Molly Coddle bring up that the last time Mr. Bumpy served as a tour guide, it led to the Lithuanian Fly Casting team being deported and created an international scandal. The only other detail given is that Mr. Bumpy claims to not have known that the flies were an endangered species.
* NotInKansasAnymore: Squishington says "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" in the episode "Gum Crazy" when he ends up following Mr. Bumpy inside Bumpy's body during Bumpy's quest to retrieve the gum inside his stomach.
* ObliviousToHisOwnDescription: In "To Sleep, Perchance to Burp", Mr. Bumpy hears about the boy who sleeps on the bed he lives under being scared of a monster under the bed keeping him awake. Even when Molly Coddle tries to explain to Mr. Bumpy that he's the monster under the bed, it takes a while for Bumpy to make the connection.
* OnlyOneName: Squishington. It is never consistent whether it's his first name or last name, either, as he refers to himself as Squishington A. Peabody in "Sock it to Me", while Mr. Bumpy gives his friend's full name as F. Lee Squishington in "Love's Labor Bumped."
* OrganAutonomy: Played with in "Gum Crazy", where Mr. Bumpy enters his own body to try and retrieve gum he has swallowed and gets into conflict with his stomach, his heart, and his brain. His stomach and brain appear as sentient organs, while his heart resembles Mr. Bumpy with a mustache rather than an actual heart.
* OverlyLongName: The earthworm Juaquin Gusanito Sin Manos from the Christmas special.
* PaperThinDisguise: Mr. Bumpy sometimes uses disguises that are obviously very poor.
** In "Penny for Your Thoughts", Mr. Bumpy tries to avoid the pennies that appear whenever he thinks by distracting them with a cardboard cutout of himself while wearing a cowboy hat and a fake mustache.
** In "Love's Labor Bumped", Bumpy finds out that Destructo has a crush on Molly Coddle and proceeds to mess with him by disguising himself as Molly. All he wears for a disguise is a large wig resembling Molly's hair, a glove resembling Molly's right arm, and a red and white legging like the one Molly wears on her left leg. It bears mentioning that Molly is a humanoid-shaped doll, while Bumpy is a short green monster with purple warts.
** In the episode "Not a Leg to Stand On", Bumpy tried to avoid being punished for allegedly stealing Molly's feet by disguising himself as Squishington's "Cousin Bela", a relative who doesn't exist. His Cousin Bela disguise is nothing more than a fake blue nose, fake eyebrows, a fake mustache, and a hat with a feather in it.
* ParachutePetticoat: Molly in "Party Poopers". While she and Mr. Bumpy are falling, her dress suddenly puffs up and becomes longer, as Mr. Bumpy holds on to her leg and they descend, and land, safely.
* ParentalBonus:
** In the episode "Party Pooper", Squishington sings the phrase "Who's that knocking at my door?" to the exact same tune the phrase is sung in the drinking song "Barnacle Bill the Sailor".
** When Destructo starts to beat up Mr. Bumpy in "Not a Peep", Mr. Bumpy quotes the Simon and Garfunkel song The Sound of Silence by saying "Hello, darkness, my old friend."
* ThePigPen / TrashoftheTitans: Depending on the episode Mr. Bumpy could be one or the other, whether he's just disgusting in person, or adding to the already gigantic horde of filth he keeps in his under the bed domicile.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Bumpy and Molly. Though every once in a while there is some mild ShipTease.
* PrimaDonnaDirector: In "Twas the Night Before Bumpy", Molly Coddle resorts to being insufferably bossy and demanding when no one takes her seriously after Bumpy makes her the pageant director.
* PullARabbitOutOfMyHat: Mr. Bumpy attempts to do this to cheer up a sick Squishington in "Hocus Dopus". When he fails, he nearly [[DrivenToSuicide lets himself get eaten by the Closet Monster]] even as Squishington insists he's not upset that his friend let him down until Squishington deliberately puts a bunny slipper into the hat and asks Bumpy to try the trick one more time.
* PunBasedTitle: Quite a lot of them, one example being the episode "Cold Turkey", which is about a turkey from the refrigerator coming to life.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Mr. Bumpy is implied to be this in "Auntie Matta", considering that he last saw his Auntie Matta during the Gold Rush.
* ReCut: The episode "Neat and Clean" is a heavily edited version of the previous episode "Adventures in Microbia", the most significant change being that the episode ends with Squishington, Bumpy, Molly Coddle, the Cute Dolls, and Destructo (the last three of which weren't present in the original episode) singing a song about how important it is to be [[TitleDrop neat and clean]].
* RecycledTitle: "Comfort Schmumfort" is used as the title for both a regular episode and a Karaoke Cafe song.
* ReluctantMonster: Mr. Bumpy hears about a monster under the bed that is freaking his boy out, and resolves to deal with it. After an investigation, Squishington deduces that the monster is in fact Mr. Bumpy, and his late-night, hard-partying ways are scaring the boy awake. Mr. Bumpy is upset by this, since he loves his boy as he's the primary source of the cool stuff he has and the dirty socks he eats.
* ReminderOfImpossibility: In "Cold Turkey", the turkey flies around at one point and subsequently falls down after Squishington consults an encyclopedia entry and points out that turkeys cannot fly.
* RhymesOnADime: The episode "I Got Needs" featured a trio of Vikings that spoke in rhyme.
* RuleOfCool: Often evoked by Bumpy in order to rationalize any of the, quite frequently, absurd things he does.
* RunningGag: The episode "Beauty and the Bump" has the running gag of Mr. Bumpy trying to solve his problems by using a baseball bat only for one of the other characters to yell at him because doing so is unsafe. This especially gets ludicrous in his dream sequence when he answers the troll's riddle "Why can't a vampire get a date?", as Mr. Bumpy's answer is merely a pun on the word "bat" (Because he has bat breath) as opposed to using a bat to hit things.
** This is used a lot, especially to facilitate the re-used animation. The same BoobyTrap, involving a bowling ball rolling down a ramp, is sprung multiple times in "Comforting the Uncomfortable." Squishy is hit twice with the same safe in "Night of the Living Bread." And Bumpy is amused by a [[ItMakesSenseinContext remote control that sprouts fungus]] in "Danger: Unexploded Squishington."
* SchmuckBait: The closet monster repeatedly uses dirty socks to bait Mr. Bumpy into his range and eat him. He ''always'' falls for it by pulling off a narrow escape.
* ScrewYourself: Touched upon in "Gum Crazy" when Mr. Bumpy tries to get the personification of his heart to let go of the gum inside his stomach by disguising himself as a woman and seducing him. The personification of Bumpy's heart happens to look like Bumpy with a mustache.
* SeadogPegLeg: Captain Jetlag from "Journey to the Center of the Lungfish" has a peg leg.
* SequelEpisode:
** "It Sang from Beyond the Stars" and "Comfort Schmumfort" are both follow-up episodes to "Not of This Boy's Room", as they feature appearances by Sleemoth and Gloog and even call back to Mr. Bumpy's first encounter with them.
** "Made in Japan II" serves as a sequel to "Made in Japan", considering that the episode revolves around Little Robot returning.
* ShoutOut:
** The episode "Night of the Living Bread", whose title is a ShoutOut to ''Film/{{Night of the Living Dead|1968}}''. At the end of the episode, they list a number of sequels, all of which are bread-based puns on other horror film titles. There were also many other nods in the series, such as Bumpy referencing ''Franchise/MortalKombat'' in one episode.
** There was also a particular love of Music/AliceCooper's "School's Out" song. It was used in two episodes and a Karaoke segment.
** "Hide and Go Freak" had Bumpy and Squishington playing the titular game, where they competed in trying to scare each other. Squishington pretends to see something horrible behind the door and calls out [[Music/TheBeatles "Get back! Get back to where you once belonged!"]]
** [[Film/CitizenKane A sled with "rosebud" written on it]] is shown in ''I Dream Of Silverfish''.
** "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy"
*** The episode has a similar premise to ''Literature/HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas''. Both stories are about a green creature who plans to steal everyone's presents, but has a change of heart after realizing what Christmas is really about.
*** While giving a motivational speech to the snowman soldiers, the head elf paraphrases the "stick your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face" quote from ''Film/{{Patton}}''.
** Li'l Robot, a googly-eyed, red and white toy robot from Japan, appears to be based on the title character of the 1970s {{Toku}} series ''Robocon''. Funnily enough, Robocon later got a SpiritualSuccessor, ''Series/BRoboKabutack'', which came out in 1997, that featured an extremely similar transformation system. She also vaguely resembles the title character of the obscure '80s SuperRobot anime ''Superpower Robo Galatt'', another red and white robot with goofy, SuperDeformed proportions that can transform into a taller SuperMode.
* ShrunkInTheWash: "It Came from the Closet" ends with the Closet Monster being shrunk to the point of posing no threat to Mr. Bumpy after being put through laundry.
* {{Snowlems}}: "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy" featured an army of snowman soldiers.
* SomethingWeForgot: In "Loss of Face", Squishington has to help some bugs go to "The Place" after realizing he is the foretold one destined to guide them to "The Place". After returning home and enjoying the fact that he has his face back, Squishington realizes that he forgot to get the bugs to free Mr. Bumpy from his "Curse of One Million Screams" punishment.
* StableTimeLoop: "A Sneeze in Time", where Bumpy learns to travel back in time by sneezing, runs into multiple time clones of himself, but finds he can't undo the nasty thing he said to Squishy.
* StarcrossedLovers: This is parodied with Squishington and Germ Girl from "Adventures in Microbia". Germ Girl has a one-sided crush on Squishington even though she is a germ and Squishy is a neat freak. However, Squishington eventually returns her affections and both of them are very sad to have to leave one another at the end of the episode.
* StockFootage: Not a single episode doesn't use footage from another. Hell, some even use footage from episodes that don't air until later, which makes it confusing as to what was done first in the show's production.
* SubbingForSanta: "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy" features a rare example where substituting for Santa wasn't done intentionally. Mr. Bumpy steals Santa's bag of presents and inadvertently drops the gifts down everyone's chimneys while fleeing from the elves, even putting a Santa hat on before he leaves the North Pole. It's through accidentally giving everyone their presents that Mr. Bumpy learns the value of giving.
* SubvertedRhymeEveryOccasion: Turns up in "Neat and Clean".
-->'''Germ''': Yeah, why do we wanna be neat and clean for? We're smart...
-->'''Germ Girl''': We got kind hearts.
-->'''Germ''': So what if we kinda smell like--
-->'''Squishington''': Wait!
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Most obviously evoked by Bumpy in "Baby Snail," where he curses the fact he's saddled with a dumb baby in the most cooing and loving way possible.
* TakeThat: In "Loss of Face", Squishington loses his face. While drawing a new face as a temporary replacement, Mr. Bumpy says to him that if he makes one small mistake, he'll look like Ross Perot. Incidentally, the replacement face drawn is a simple smiley face.
* TeamMom: Molly, as a comfort doll, gets a lot of her enjoyment out of comforting the various inhabitants of the room.
* TemptingFate: In "Journey to the Center of the Lungfish", Bumpy jokingly asks if the lungfish will swallow him whole if he taunts him too much. The lungfish does exactly that immediately afterwards.
* ThemeTuneRollCall: The theme song begins with Mr. Bumpy introducing himself and devotes the second verse to introducing the supporting cast.
-->'''Squishington:''' Bump with Squishy!
-->'''Bumpy:''' He's my very best pal!
-->'''Molly Coddle:''' Bump with Molly!
-->'''Bumpy:''' She's my favorite gal! Bump with Closet Monster and Destructo, too, but these guys don't bother Bumpy! He knows what to do!
* TheseusShipParadox: In "Farewell, 2 Arms" Molly goes mad with power and replaces all her parts. Soon Squishington finds Molly's original parts and puts them back together, bringing back the normal Molly. So in the end there are two dolls that both have Molly's mind at the same time.
* TheThingThatWouldNotLeave: "Auntie Matta" introduces Mr. Bumpy's Auntie Matta, who comes over to visit, but her presence proves a major inconvenience because she likes nothing better than to scare everyone and stays at the house for ''months''. She eventually is made to leave when Bumpy scares her by introducing her to television.
* TheToothHurts: Happens in "Nothing but the Tooth", where Mr. Bumpy suffers a toothache and an attempt to extract the offending tooth results in having his entire set of chompers come out and try to eat everything in its path.
* ThinkOfTheCensors:
** In "Adventures in Microbia," when Squishington gets kissed by Germ Girl, Bumpy [[SceneryCensor blocks them from the viewers' eyes]] and says, "Hey, you can't do that on TV."
** In "Beauty and the Bump", Mr. Bumpy asks Knight!Destructo if he has anything more network-friendly after being shown a selection of sharp, bladed weapons.
* ThreeShorts: With the exceptions of "Party Poopers" (a twenty-minute episode followed by a Karaoke Cafe segment) and "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy" (an hour-long special with no Karaoke Cafe segment), every episode consists of two ten-minute episodes and a Karaoke Cafe song.
* TitleDrop:
** In the episode "Not of This Boy's Room", Mr. Bumpy at one point actually says "Not of this boy's room".
** "Bumpy the Untrappable" at one point as Bumpy use the episode's title to refer to himself.
** Molly gives one in the episode "Comfort Schmumfort" when she gets ready to rescue Bumpy and Squishington from Sleemoth and Gloog.
* TookALevelInBadass: Molly Coddle in "Comfort Schmumfort". After she is ridiculed by Sleemoth and Gloog when they capture Mr. Bumpy and Squishington, she trains herself to become stronger and single-handedly comes to Bumpy and Squishy's rescue.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Molly goes through this in "Twas the Night Before Bumpy" when she gets fed up with everyone else ridiculing her even when she tells them that she is put in charge of the pageant. Fortunately, she eventually sees the error of her ways and she is forgiven for her actions.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Mr. Bumpy really loves eating socks.
* TheTwelveSpoofsOfChristmas: The Christmas special "Twas the Night Before Bumpy" features a parody of the Twelve Days of Christmas, first having everyone in the house state what they want for Christmas and a reprise at the end sung by Bumpy as he reflects on learning the value of giving to others after going through his journey to the North Pole in an attempt to take Santa's bag of presents for himself.
* UnreliableVoiceover: When Squishington reads Little Robot's latest email from her in "Made in Japan II", Little Robot claims that the factory makes her kind perfectly, that the children love them and that they're very profitable for the company. This is overlaid with animations of a Turbo Totrenoid having a design flaw pointed out, children crying at the sight of a Turbo Totrenoid HulkingOut and a line graph showing that the robot toys aren't selling very well.
* UnusualEuphemism: Mr. Bumpy occasionally uses the word "bump" for profanity, most commonly in the phrase "Bump this!"
* UrbanLegend: in Bumpy's world, the ones aimed at kids are always true. You shouldn't eat cherries and milk together, swinging over the bar will turn you inside-out, bread always lands peanut-butter side down, oh and there's a monster both under your bed and in your closet.
* VillainSong:
** Destructo gets "I'm Bigger Than You" in one of the Karaoke Cafe segments.
** The alien duo Sleemoth and Gloog get a Villain Song of their own called "Invaders", which they sing in the episode "It Sang from Beyond the Stars".
* WhatTheHellHero: Mr. Bumpy is reprimanded by Squishington for his behavior twice in "Twas the Night Before Bumpy". The first time by pointing out how dishonest it was to not keep his promise of giving Juaquin Gusanito Sin Manos the bionic arms he desired and the second time by calling his conduct "uncool" when Bumpy tries to weasel his way out of giving Squishington the feet he wanted after all the peril the two friends had been through.
* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: Averted. According to the address seen on Squishington's email in the episode "Made in Japan II", the show takes place in San Fransisco, California.
* WentToTheGreatXInTheSky: After defeating the Great Mama of All Microbes using Squishington's cleaning spray in "Adventures in Microbia", Germ Girl asks for one last look upon Squishington's face before she journeys to the great mold in the sky. It's not clear whether she's actually dying or just being overly dramatic.
* WhyAmITicking: "Danger: Unexploded Squishington" has Squishington accidentally eat a bomb while snacking at night. As a result, he hears a ticking sound coming from inside him for most of the short.
* WildTake: A staple of the show, especially from Bumpy.
* WiltingOdor: After falling into garbage in "Love Stinks", Molly Coddle's stench causes the leaves of a potted plant to wither and fall off before she gets the attention of Odiferous J. Stench.
* WordSchmord:
** "Comfort Schmumfort", a title [[RecycledTitle used for two different segments]]. One is a regular episode about Molly Coddle rescuing Squishington and Mr. Bumpy from Sleemoth and Gloog, the other is a Karaoke Cafe segment where Molly sings about her desire to take a break from constantly tending to her friends' injuries.
** In "Better Homes and Garbage", Mr. Bumpy says "Shrine, Schmine" in response to Squishington offering to make every moment he stays at Bumpy's place a living shrine toward pleasing him.
** In "Farewell 2 Arms", the corrupted Molly Coddle informs Mr. Bumpy that there's only one thing she needs to complete replacing her body parts with more powerful limbs. Mr. Bumpy guesses that Molly needs a new dress, but Molly replies "Dress, schmess" and states that what she really wants is a new head.
** In "Love Stinks", Molly Coddle tries to get away from Odiferous J. Stench by stating that it is getting late. Odie retorts with "late, schmate".
** In "'Twas the Night Before Bumpy", Squishington states that it would really help their journey to the North Pole if they had a compass. Bumpy replies "Compass, bumpass".
* YouWontLikeHowITaste: In "Not a Leg to Stand On", Mr. Bumpy gets in trouble with the Cute Dolls for taking their car for a joyride when they threaten to feed him to some carnivorous foam toads. Molly Coddle convinces the Cute Dolls to let Bumpy off the hook by claiming that he's learned his lesson and that he'd probably give the foam toads indigestion.
