A terrible monster suddenly attacks A-City without warning. Many innocents are killed instantly, and more continue to be wiped out by the terrifying fiend with each passing minute, with even more wretched buildings and properties. But when all seems lost, one lone savior steps forward and [[OneHitKill destroys the monster with a single punch]]. Who is this mysterious protector? He is...

''One Punch Man'' is a 2009 Japanese {{Webcomic}} created by the artist and writer Creator/{{ONE}}. The series is largely an AffectionateParody of [[ShonenDemographic Shounen]] {{Superhero}} stories, lampooning their over the top [[SeriousBusiness melodrama]] or general [[RuleOfFunny silliness]] by bringing the genre's standard plot to its [[SoWhatDoWeDoNow logical conclusion]].

Saitama is an unemployed {{Salaryman}} turned part-time {{Superhero}} who has become so powerful he can defeat any adversary [[OneHitKill with a single punch]]. [[BlessedWithSuck He also happens to be extremely depressed about this]], as it means he has [[NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction no more challenges left in his life]]. But despite that fact, Saitama continues to follow his now utterly monotonous hero hobby, encountering {{Mutants}}, {{Cyborg}} soldiers, {{Ninja}} prodigies, HumanoidAliens, SupernaturalMartialArts masters, [[PsychicPowers Psychics]], many a corrupt SuperTeam, {{Kaiju}}, SeaMonster terrors, and just about [[FantasyKitchenSink everything else you can imagine]], all the while hoping that, someday, one of them might put up a fight that lasts longer than their MotiveRant.

The series has been wildly popular, with the [[http://galaxyheavyblow.web.fc2.com/index.html ongoing webcomic]] being adapted into a [[http://tonarinoyj.jp/manga/onepanman/ manga]] drawn by Creator/YusukeMurata of ''Manga/{{Eyeshield 21}}'' fame, an English serialization of said manga in Creator/VizMedia's ''Weekly Magazine/ShonenJump'', a drama CD, a 2015 anime adaptation from Creator/{{Madhouse}}, several {{OVA}} videos from December 2015 on, and an April 2019 second season anime by Creator/JCStaff. A third season was announced in August 2022.

An English dub of the series by Viz Media began airing on Creator/{{Toonami}} on July 16, 2016. The Japanese dub can also be streamed in the subbed form on Creator/{{Netflix}} for Season 1 and Creator/{{Hulu}} for Season 2.

!!One-Punch Tropes:
[[foldercontrol]]
[[folder:Tropes A-B]]
* AbandonedWarehouseDistrict: There's an entire region of town which, for some reason, the monsters always attack; so, unsurprisingly, nobody lives there anymore. [[spoiler:Because the land value dropped so hard, Saitama lives in the neighborhood and can maintain a reasonably comfortable apartment despite not having had a day job for some time. It was implied that powerful monsters attack there so often specifically because they've heard how strong he is and want to fight him, but it turns out that the Monster Association has made their base there. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their recruitment rate drops when Saitama is about the neighborhood.]]
* TheAce: Genos is patient, intelligent, self-sacrificing, and a terrifyingly skilled fighter with a strong sense of justice. All this means he's pretty much playing the eternal StraightMan to Saitama's lackadaisical approach to heroism, although ultimately Saitama is still far stronger.
* AchievementsInIgnorance: Puri Puri Prisoner's strength and resilience mainly comes from his delusions. He's convinced all his fellow prisoners [[ThePowerOfLove are his boyfriends]], even as they [[AbhorrentAdmirer tell him to go die]]. When attacked by a group of monsters designed to inflict StatusEffects, he gains a new power just by ignoring the pain and shivering so hard he can disintegrate things he touches.
* AdaptationDistillation: The anime removes some references about arcs after Boros' arc, save for some cameos for the characters. For example, they removed Genos' reference of [[spoiler:the Blizzard Group's newbie crushing in Episode 7]].
* AdaptationExpansion: Murata's version compared to ONE's original webcomic. The anime adds even further scenes that were in neither comic.
** To give an example: in both the webcomic and the Murata redraw, when Boros' ship arrives and devastates A-City, not a single mention was given to what happened to all the people who used to live there, and in the chapters that follow, it's all-too-easy to assume that its whole population was simply wiped out. The anime devotes several scenes to show that there were survivors and the Hero Association spared no expense to rescue and secure them. It's just that the action centered on the S-Class heroes on the ground and Saitama's battle with Boros in the mothership itself.
** Of particular note is Murata's TournamentArc, which doesn't appear in ONE's original, although it's still written by him. Chronologically, it takes place between Chapters 52 and 53 of the webcomic.
** The biggest example to date would probably be the Monster Association Arc, to the point that arguably, the manga is its own continuity only occasionally borrowing elements from the webcomic, in comparison to the earlier arcs, where it typically follows it beat for beat. However, the manga still keeps to the webcomic's arc structure, moving onto the Psychic Sisters Arc afterwards, while making relevant changes based on the Monster Association Arc's changes.
* AdaptationExplanationExtrication:
** In the Manga, after [[spoiler:the alien invaders trash the Hero Association headquarters]], an employee proposes a new building plan he estimates will take 10 years. However, Metal Knight cleans up the excess debris and begins building, finishing the building in 10 ''days''. In the Anime, Genos narrates that a new building was made, but how it was made isn't explained.
** Also they didn't adapt the extra chapters, which caused a little problem as to how Puri-Puri-Prisoner and Sonic escaped from prison.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: After following the webcomic mostly in the same structure and tone for years, the manga slowly started to show a tonal shift in how the characters, heroes and antagonists alike, are portrayed; by the later parts of the Monster Association arc and beyond the manga went further with adding original content, or slightly diverging, from the source material, not only that but characters with pronounced flaws, such as many heroes in the S-Class, or an antagonist such as Garou, had several positive traits added to them, shying away from their apparent flaws present in the webcomic. One specific plot point was completely altered between the webcomic and manga to settle that tonal shift, [[spoiler:Garou's disdain for heroics originally used the entire S-Class as an example for what he truly hated about the status quo, but since the manga mixes their flaws with much more apparent qualities, Garou's motive rant does not use the S-Class as a backdrop at all, instead the type of heroes Garou despises is portrayed by random lower class heroes who antagonize him after his defeat]]. Characters who were already good people in the webcomic become even nicer in the manga as well, Saitama for one is friendlier than his original counterpart, his proximity toward Genos much later in the series is a shining difference between versions.
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: As a result of AdaptationExpansion, the manga allows some relationships to deepen and form new dynamics that didn't previously exist in the webcomic, particularly the MA Arc:
** Saitama and Genos is the most obvious example. They're far closer than their webcomic counterparts, being genuine friends, with [[spoiler:Saitama actually relying on Genos to serve as his MoralityChain and LivingEmotionalCrutch.]] A stark contrast to their webcomic dynamic, where although they do genuinely care for one another, Saitama is far more callous and distant with Genos, while the latter feels neglected and downright ignored by Saitama despite the two months of "training" he had under him.
** Another would be Tatsumaki and Fubuki. Webcomic Tatsumaki is not only extremely controlling and emotionally abusive, she's not above hurting Fubuki or taking control of her, invoking understandable deep rooted fear and trauma in Fubuki, to the point the latter doesn't have the heart to save her and eventually goes no contact. Manga Tatsumaki, while still controlling and disrespectful of Fubuki, has never raised a hand against her and based on the doodles from the manga, does make an effort to be a good older sister and hero and occasionally hangs out with Fubuki. Fubuki on the other hand has taken Saitama's words to heart early and got over her fear towards her sister, wanting to save her this time from herself. It changes their relationship from abusive to troubled but not unsalvagable.
** Child Emperor and Zombieman develop a younger brother - older brother relationship, thanks to the latter reaching out and being kind to the former, changing CE from being jaded by the adults around him to fully realizing them as flawed but nuanced people.
** Mumen Rider and Tank Top Master form a friendship based on genuine respect for one another and mutual ideals during their teamwork at the hospital they were admitted at, and later during the evacuation of Z City.
** While it's implied Bang had a soft spot for Garou in the webcomic, they weren't all that close, with Bang at some point needing Bomb's help else he might kill Garou and never bothering to search for him after he ran away. Whereas in the manga Bang put his life on the line to ground Garou's humanity, [[spoiler:searching for him for days, and eventually serving as his guardian as he retrains him again to shape him up to be his succesor]].
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Given the source's [[StylisticSuck artstyle]], this is bound to happen to everyone save for a few examples.
* AerosolSprayBackfire: When one of Mosquito Girl's mosquitoes tries to steal Saitama's blood, he tries squishing it, only for it to somehow keep avoiding all of his attempts. Saitama then tries killing it with a can of bug spray when it returns to Mosquito Girl, only for him to be running into the spray and getting it in his mouth, desperately choking and trying to spit it out.
* AesopAmnesia:
** Genos has a bad habit of underestimating his enemies and getting taken off guard, usually losing a limb during the process. He even lampshades that no matter how many times it bites him in the ass he keeps doing it.
** When the Hero Association first launched, they placed a lot of importance on rankings with high ranked heroes ending up as worthless glory hogs whenever real problems showed up, which were generally resolved quietly by very low ranked heroes. Noticing the issue, the Hero Association took all those heroes who didn't care about where they ranked and formed them into the current S ranks. A few years later, it's clear that they've made no other meaningful changes to the policy given that the strongest person in the association, Saitama, barely made it in at all and only received a fraction of the credit he deserved for his actions. Meanwhile, a bunch of low-level jerks go out of their way to go around 'rookie crushing' and doing other stupid things that only undermine the purpose of the organization.
* AffectionateParody: Of superhero comics and shounen manga.
* AfterTheEnd: [[spoiler:It isn't actually brought up until the middle of the story. As Amai Mask explains to Saitama in Supreme Hero arc, the world originally was made of many different nations, not unlike our own. The nations [[ForeverWar fought multiple world wars with each other over natural resources]], and eventually it got so bad and killed so many people that they all decided to [[EnemyMine make up and band together]] to preserve the future and prioritize the future generations by creating a unified language and a world government. Unfortunately, it was too late, and the effects of these wars continued to harm the world. As a result of the world wars, toxicity rose, which eventually gave rise to monsters and other dangerous natural conditions, which destroyed all of humanity save those living on the main supercontinent where the series takes place. The civilization in ''One-Punch Man'' is a post-apocalyptic last stand against the [[GaiasVengeance hostile natural forces]] of the world, which were created and/or provoked by humanity's own hubris.]]
* AlasPoorVillain: Very much averted. Villains in the story are mostly monsters, who attempt to cause massive collateral damage and kill many people. Pretty much NOBODY from humans side mourns over their deaths, and Hero Assocation is completely fine with killing them, even if many of monsters [[WasOnceAMan were humans before their transformation.]] There are few exceptions however, mostly from Saitama who sometimes sympathizes with his opponents.:
** Despite Boros' murderous and imperialistic ways, Saitama can't help but relate to his struggle for fulfillment. Boros' life had been so empty until he faced Saitama in battle, but it ended up killing him anyways. Saitama departs the broken spacecraft with a solemn expression on his face, as if he begrudgingly respects the intergalactic menace.
** In the manga at least, we get a shot of Kombu Infinity weeping woefully on the ground after Saitama ripped off all of their kombu and used it for soup stock. Though considering [[OneHitKO what Saitama does to most monsters that incur his wrath]], they got off pretty easy.
** [[spoiler: In the original version of chapter 103, Do-S was seen begging for her life only to have her throat crushed by Sweet Mask, making the reader pity her gruesome fate. This was changed in a future revision to make Sweet Mask seem less evil.]]
* AlienBlood: Multiple monsters are seen bleeding out blood that clearly isn't red.
** Copious amounts of it are spilled in the last episode of Season 1, [[spoiler:when Amai Mask mercilessly slaughters the captured alien invaders who survived the destruction of Boros' ship.]]
* AlienInvasion: During the aptly named Alien Conquerors Arc (last three episodes of Season 1), an [[AliensAreBastards evil alien army]] called the Dark Matter Thieves (led by Lord Boros) attack the planet Earth, destroying all of City A before the heroes stop them.
* AllJustADream: The subterraneans' invasion and Saitama's epic fight against them. The real subterraneans conveniently happen to be invading just as Saitama wakes up, but turn out to be much less impressive opponents.
* AllThereInTheStinger: The anime adaptation does this quite frequently. One notable example is in Episode 5, when the stinger shows Genos asking to move in with Saitama and giving him rent money to convince him. Anyone who misses this stinger, or who hasn't read the webcomic or manga, will be confused as to why Genos is suddenly living with Saitama in Episode 6.
* AlmightyJanitor:
** While Saitama was screwed out of a higher rank because he utterly failed the written portion of the test, several of the other heroes are also content to remain lower-ranked than their power levels indicate for various reasons (because they feel they haven't earned a higher rank, they would rather be the big fish in the small pond rather than the small fish in a big pond, to keep ambitious low-ranks down, etc.)
** When the Hero Association first started, most of the future S-Class heroes were very low ranked due to not caring about rankings or showing off, such as Superalloy Blackluster being the lowest ranked hero of all. The highest ranked of any of them seems to have been Bang, who was still near the bottom of B-Class.
* AlreadyTheCase: When Armored Gorilla is disabled by Genos, he refuses to give up any information to him or Saitama, boasting that his superior Beast King will kill them both. Saitama then pulls out the [[LudicrousGibs messy remains]] from when he'd slaughtered Beast King and asks if that's the guy he's talking about. After a '''long''' VisibleSilence, Armored Gorilla switches from RoboSpeak to a regular voice and meekly acquiesces.
* AlternateContinuity: At first the manga and webcomic seemed to be walking the same road, the manga simply expanding on certain webcomic events without ever contradicting it; however, the years went by with the manga introducing many characters and events that do contradict the webcomic's continuity:
** The prime example being Suiryu, originally a manga exclusive character that later appeared in the webcomic through completely different circumstances that completely ignore the original manga events where the character was first introduced, confirming the tournament never existed in the webcomic, with Suiryu meeting Saitama for the first time in that continuity when Suiko, his sister, was thanking Saitama for saving her before.
** While in the manga from the Monster Association arc onwards it develops into completely original events and revelations which the webcomic never had, and in specific cases would only reveal much later.
* AndThenWhat: Saitama has done it. He's become the strongest hero of all time, able to fell any enemy with a single strike. Such ease in his super heroics, however, has given rise to boredom, ennui, and a lack of enthusiasm when playing hero.
* AnimalMotif: There's a notable centipede motif within the Monster Association base. Besides the monsters Centichoro, Centisenpai, and Centikohai, there are centipede-like statues in the halls. [[spoiler: Then Orochi's lair has a centipede design on the altar, and Orochi's true form has a centipede-like tail too]]. Possibly a holdover from the original idea that the centipedes helped the Subterraneans construct the base before it was taken over.
* AnimeThemeSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QImBolnTVH8 THE HERO!!]] by Music/JAMProject.
* AnArmAndALeg:
** Mosquito Girl rips off one of Genos' robotic arms in her first attack. Then a few seconds later she realizes that Genos ripped off both her legs at the same time.
** Iaian [[spoiler:loses his left arm to one of Melzagald's attacks.]]
* AntiClimax: Saitama literally has to dream of a fight that actually challenges him in order to get one. Almost no matter how mean-looking or powerful the enemy appears at first, the moment Saitama decides to attack IS the end of the fight. Even in the longer fights such as with galactic emperor Boros or Hero Hunter Garou, at the end of it Saitama's not exactly satisified, despite his excitement at first.
* ApocalypseHow: Often invoked and discussed. Class 0 happens frequently thanks to Tiger, Demon and Dragon monsters. Class 1 happens at least once per saga, with City A and City Z being destroyed at the end of Alien Conqueors arc and Monster Assocation arc respectively. Anything above is usually averted, thanks to heroes efforts taking down Dragon and Above Dragon level monsters. [[spoiler:It's eventually confirmed that if Saitama would ''really'' let it all loose, the Earth would not survive it, despite it's surprising durability.]]
* ArmCannon: Genos has blasters built into both his hands.
* ArmorIsUseless: Averted. Boros was able to survive Saitama's first attack because his armor protected him, subsequently shattering to pieces. Boros declares, however, that the suit was actually a PowerLimiter.
* ArtEvolution: ONE's webcomic, while still [[StylisticSuck rough around the edges]], has seen a notable improvement in terms of visuals over time. While still not up to the level of the redraw, the more recent chapters look far more professional than the early ones to say the least.
** An inverse example happened to Season 2 of the Anime, to the point where it's easy FlameBait on some sites.
* ArtShift: In Murata's version, Saitama is usually drawn incredibly half-assed, in stark contrast to the ridiculous level of detail given to almost every other character and background, reflecting his attitude toward everything. Whenever he starts taking things seriously and acts like a badass though, he's drawn in the detailed style. Tatsumaki seems to adopt this tendency of normally being poorly-drawn herself when she's angry/pouting.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Lampshaded with Saitama's training. [[spoiler:While 100 pushups and situps per day should be relatively easy for most fit adults, with 100 squats being slightly harder, running 10 km per day without rest would destroy your leg muscles, especially with how little protein Saitama ate.]] Dr. Genus notes how Saitama's strength comes from his determination breaking his limiter instead of any specific training, which is presumably also what kept his muscles intact despite his training regimen.
* ArtisticLicenseEconomics: PlayedForLaughs with the Paradise Group's scheme. They want to make a world wherein people only have to work if they want to, and those who don't work are fully financially supported. They don't seem to know that this is not at all how economics work, but then again they really aren't all that smart, and it's just some made up rhetoric for slackers who want to get out of working for a living.
* ArtisticLicenseMedicine: After Bang rescues Tanktop Master from Fuhrer Ugly, he notices his heart's not beating, prompting Genos to activate his built-in defibrillators. Although Bang revives him with "Tanktop Magic" before Genos can try, you're not supposed to shock asystole anyway, which you treat with CPR and vasopressors. Defibrillation is meant to treat irregular heartbeats, not restart the heart.
* ArtifactTitle: As the series progresses, more enemies (such as [[spoiler:Boros]] and [[spoiler:Garou]]) appear that Saitama has to punch more than once to defeat. They still pose no problem to him though as his initial punches are just his "normal" ones and he can still OneHitKO them with moves from his "Serious Series" (and in the latter's case, he never really intended to kill him anyway).
* AssholeVictim: Literally every single monster out there, who attempt to kill multiple people. Quite a few humans suffer from this too such as the random thief who goes around looting when the Mosquito Girl shows up, only to be killed by a gigantic swarm of mosquitoes literally sucking the lifeblood out of him. And anyone dumb enough to kill, threaten, or attack civilians, or the heroes attempting to defend them when Saitama is around.
* AssKicksYou: This is how Saitama beats Suiryu in the tournament. He accidentally knocks him clear out of the ring with a HIP CHECK of all things while he's [[SpectacularSpinning trying to imitate one of Suiryu's moves]]! And it's so strong that Suiryu plummets into the audience!
* AtomicFBomb: Saitama lets out a frustrated one after he defeats Vaccine Man in the first chapter.
* AtrociousAlias: Some of the hero names the Hero Association gives are embarassing at best or insulting at worst till the point a small group of heroes decided to unionize to demand a change to their hero names with Caped Baldy (Saitama) being their leader.
* AtrociousArthropods:
** The first villain Saitama ever faced was Crablante, a crab-like monster who didn't hesitate to kill children for making fun of him.
** Two of [[EvilGenius Dr.]] [[MadScientist Genus's]] artificial mutants qualify -- Mosquito Girl who is based on a mosquito and is enjoys draining people of their blood and Carnage Kabuto, a rhino beetle mutant who enjoys fighting and destruction.
** The Monster Association is a villainous group of monsters. Some of their members are arthropod creatures such as Awakened Cockroach, Centichoro and Bug God.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: Beefcake is a bodybuilder who grows into a giant monster after his scientist brother makes him special steroids.
* AutobotsRockOut: Whenever you hear [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO2vyDeOqzo this guitar chug]], be sure that some ass is about to be kicked.
* AwardBaitSong: ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP0SS8GnVHk Kanashimi Tachi Wo Dakishimete]]'', Perfect to end the first season of the anime [[spoiler:after the epic fight against Boros]].
* BadassLongcoat: Zombieman wears one.
* BadassNormal: In the second chapter, we get a flashback to the time before Saitama gained his incredible strength, when he fought a crab monster with nothing but normal human speed, strength, agility, and a necktie. [[EyeScream He won.]] Also, a fair amount of high-ranking heroes are simply average-looking people who happen to have some CharlesAtlasSuperpower.
* BaitAndSwitch: The series often uses this type of gag.
** Through the entire ambush of Carnage Kabuto on Saitama, the latter thinks of how is it impossible to met such monster and calculates in his mind of what the monster meant when he said the rampage would last until next Saturday. The audience thinks that this is possibly the first true threat to Saitama... [[spoiler:and then it's revealed that Saitama just thought about the almost missed sale in the supermarket, while one punching dangerous monster once again.]]
** The Volume 9 bonus chapter has the Blizzard Group try to work to get themselves a new car, with Fubuki suggesting to use fliers for money opportunities and the majority of the group getting side jobs that only get them 3.5 million combined. Fubuki comes back with over 2 million alone, describing her getting it as having put her body on the line to do so. Mortified by their leader apparantly resorting to prostitution for the group, the other members vow to make sure she never does it again by working harder... [[spoiler:before she reveals that she was out bounty hunting and said the fliers she was talking about were wanted posters.]]
** After the defeat of the Underground King and the Sea King, the appearance of the Sky King seems to be the beginning of a new arc, to complete the LandSeaSky trifecta. The birdmen however get massacred in a few pages by the actual new threat: an alien invasion led by galactic conqueror Boros.
* BaldOfEvil: A gang of bald terrorists eventually appear, making people fear anyone who is bald, including Saitama, who decides to defeat the gang simply to make his life easier.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: Saitama can do this with ''one hand. Then SNAP THE BLADE.'' Hell, he doesn't even need to use his hands because he can do the same with his ''[[NowThatsUsingYourTeeth TEETH]]''!
* {{Bathos}}: One Punch Man to its core. The show is more or less what would happen if you plucked a parody character & put him in the middle of a GrimDark world. Or maybe a serious character in a parody world. [[PoesLaw It's hard to tell.]]
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: Averted; when Saitama is thrown onto the moon, he holds his breath until he can jump back.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Zigzagged. Genos is probably the most morally sound of the characters considered to be particularly handsome InUniverse, whereas Handsome Kamen Amai Mask is a merciless AntiHero who kills any monster he can get his hands on [[AllCrimesAreEqual regardless of their crimes]] despite being Class A, Rank 1. Flashy Flash and Speed-o-Sound Sonic are {{Bishounen}} ninjas who trained together, but the former is a straightforward hero while the latter is neutral and evil-leaning. Ugmons invoke this, becoming powerful monsters through their ugliness, whereas Pig God is an obese man seemingly obsessed with eating but he also can be considered one of the most heroic S-Class heroes.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor:
** Regular guy Saitama wished to become a hero who could defeat any enemy with one punch. After years of training, he got what he wanted, which led to an existential crisis.
** Saitama also promised that if they both successfully registered as superheroes (because he didn't want to go alone), he would make Genos his official disciple. He soon regrets the decision.
** Boros was an unstoppable alien conqueror who found himself in [[VictoryIsBoring the same predicament as Saitama]], and followed a prophecy that he would find [[WorthyOpponent his equal]] on the distant planet of Earth. In his fight with Saitama, he is forced to use all his powers and trump cards, and he even gets Saitama to use a couple "serious" attacks. However, [[spoiler:after his defeat, he can tell that [[JustToyingWithThem Saitama was still holding back]], but [[AGoodWayToDie at least he got the challenging fight he always wanted]].]]
--->[[spoiler:'''Boros:''' It was as if... throughout the entire battle... not once... did you bare your fangs... heh. Prophecies really can't be trusted. You are too strong.]]
** In the Manga, during his fight with [[spoiler:Awakened Garou]], Saitama muses that he might finally have found a worthy opponent capable of withstanding his full strength, but since [[spoiler:Garou's rampage resulted in Genos' death]], it doesn't bring him any happiness.
* BeefGate: Non-video game example. The Hero system allows the top-ranked member of each class the opportunity to move up to the next class.
** Amai Mask intentionally sits at the top of A-Class to keep anyone he considers undeserving from getting into S-Class.
** Top-ranked C-Class hero Mumen Rider is an unintentional one. He refuses to go into B-Class for personal reasons (probably because he is severely underpowered even for B-Class) but his presence still generates a standard that must be surpassed for a hero to rise from C-Class; because he has the personality and HeroicResolve of an IdealHero, but no powers, a hero must have some kind of combat ability to surpass him and reach B-Class.
** Similarly, Fubuki is top of the B class due to her InferioritySuperiorityComplex and desire to command the other B-Class heroes instead of just being one A-Class hero among others, although Saitama might be slowly talking her out of it.
* BeginWithAFinisher: Genos immediately resorts to incinerating the entire House of Evolution with his cannons [[DungeonBypass rather than go inside]]. Unfortunately, the most important parts of the facility are underground.
* BerserkButton:
** Saitama doesn't take missing his Saturday special sales very well.
** Mosquitoes seem to drive him crazy, especially when he can't kill them.
** Long-drawn-out exposition sets him off pretty quick.
** Doing damage to his apartment also counts.
** And most of all, don't make fun of his baldness.
** Calling Tatsumaki a brat will guarantee a brutal beatdown from her.
* BeyondTheImpossible: Metal Knight was able to fix and improve City A in seven days what the Hero Association assumed would take a minimum of 10 years. With that he even improved it by reinforcing the Headquarters so it could house A-Class heroes and have roads all over the country. The Association is both amazed and terrified of Metal Knight for pulling this off.
* BigDamnHeroes: Plenty of Saitama’s feats of strength and speed shown throughout the series demonstrate that he can effortlessly move at the Speed of Sound and push it to the Speed of Light if he so desires, but like anything hinging on Saitama’s character he needs to be motivated enough to show it off like that; with that there are examples of Saitama simply arriving late, or being misdirected from reaching the place some big commotion is happening as he just casually strolls (or runs in human speed) to his destination instead of just arriving in lightning strike accuracy, that results in Saitama coming up dramatically when all hope seems to be lost or when there’s no one left around to witness his real power, perpetuating the narrative that very few people know how powerful Saitama really is.
* BishounenLine: Once Mosquito Girl absorbs all the blood her mosquitoes have collected, she becomes more human in appearance.
** Saitama's most formidable opponents are often smaller and more humanoid, such as Boros and Garou.
* BittersweetEnding: Each saga ends with one:
** Hero Association Saga: the aliens are defeated, and not a single hero dies, however many people within A-City weren't so lucky, the Shibabawa prophecy about Earth being doomed has yet to come, and Saitama has to live with the feeling that even the {{Foil}} Boros and OmnicidalManiac from beyond space, despite his best efforts haven't managed to actually give a "fair" fight for our bald hero. At least however, Saitama has now a friend he can talk, hang out and rely on.
** Human Monster Saga:
*** Webcomic: [[spoiler:Much more emphasis on the "bitter" side. Monster Association is demolished and most of their members are dead, Garou is defeated, but he escapes into hiding, S-Class Heroes are heavily beaten and taught a harsh lesson from the Hero Hunter, Saitama has his house destroyed due to it being set right next to MA base, and the Garou's actions are gonna change the Hero Association forever.]]
%%*** Manga: [[spoiler:Much more emphasis on the "sweet" side. The majority of the Monster Association members are dead and its base is destroyed, S-Class Heroes go through CharacterDevelopment and become much better heroes, a rescue operation for Waganma and a few other hostages is done successfully and Garou is defeated but unlike in the webcomic, he didn't go through HeelRealization and escapes. However, Bang is able to find him and becomes his sensei again to watch over him in doing hero activities, hoping to redeem him. Hero Association executives know well that this will cause major backlash among heroes, but they have to do it to fight the still upcoming Shibabawa's prophecy. And despite Saitama's home still being destroyed, it ends on a far more optimistic side, with him and Genos preparing to search together for the remaining stuff from their apartment.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: Saitama wanted to be a superhero who could blow away evil with a single punch... which as it turns out was incredibly boring. Now battling villains and monsters is about as exciting as a trip to the grocery store to pick up a gallon of milk.
* BloodKnight: Saitama. He first became a hero when he rescued a child from a monster after being fired from his previous job with no hope of getting a new one. He felt such a rush after this first heroic rescue that he dedicated himself to becoming a hero. At one point he has a dream about being attacked by an army of monsters that actually CAN give him a challenge. The next morning, he goes up against enemies similar to those in his dream, but not as strong; he's left horribly disappointed.
* BloodlessCarnage: When Sonic decapitates the Paradisers in the anime, only the last one who dies partially off-screen is shown bleeding, even though 20-30 people in front of him lose their heads too. There's literally no blood from them; the heads fall off and they're dead.
* BloodyHilarious: In the anime adaptation, instead of being slapped through a building Mosquito Girl's body splatters on it, releasing all the blood she absorbed beforehand. It's enough to cover the whole side of a building and then some.
* BodyHorror: Mosquito Girl's victims are reduced to mummified husks when her swarm sucks out all their blood.
* {{Bookends}}: Season 1 of the Anime adaptation begins and ends with an extremely threatening Mysterious Being showing up all of a sudden, outlining why all humans have to die, with Saitama one-punching them after their bragging and being ''very'' frustrated that was all it took. [[spoiler:Especially in the last case, since he had just fought someone who could actually take more]]. Also, in that same episode wherein he dreamed he fought some worthy foes, dramatic music swelled and Saitama's heart beat, as if he's feeling some challenge once again... [[spoiler:only this time it's Boros whose blood is pumping again, with the prospect of facing a truly worthy foe whom he could go all out with.]]
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman:
** Bang attempted this with Saitama and Genos. Neither went for it, the former because it would be pointless and the latter because he has the "best defense is a good offense" mindset.
** Subverted when [[spoiler:King, the [[WorldsStrongestMan "strongest man in the world"]]]] decides to take some martial arts lessons. No-one wants to train them, believing that teaching them martial arts would cause them to become too powerful.
*** The wariness of those martial arts masters is arguably justified, since they [[spoiler:were believed to have caused visible damage to the moon using it to train, and thrown a "solar-system destroying bomb" into a black hole]], ''before'' receiving any martial arts training.
%%* BrattyHalfPint: Saitama had to deal with one in a special chapter.
* BreakTheHaughty: After Blast, King, and Tastumaki, Superalloy Darkshine is considered the strongest in the Hero Association and has the skills to match. However, much of his strength is based on his confidence in his muscular and shiny body. The instant he meets someone buffer and shinier like [[spoiler:Garou or Golden Sperm]], he becomes extremely weak.
* BubblegumPopping: Saitama annoys the speaker at the hero seminar by chewing gum and then making a bubble so big it covers his whole face when it pops.
* ButNotTooChallenging:
** [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Suiryu]] claims he wishes to feel the thrill of a real fight, just like Saitama and Boros, but the moment he's faced with a situation where he might actually lose, he immediately loses all composure and flies into a rage. He outright states he doesn't find losing to be fun, which contrasts Boros, who had the time of his life even though he completely lost.
** [[spoiler:Superalloy Blackluster is revealed to be this during his fight against Garou in the Monster Association arc. He thought he was looking for an opponent that could push him to use 100% of his power, but when he finally fights against Garou and finds himself pushed to that point, he realizes that what he wanted wasn't so much a "good fight", as a fight that could make him feel good about himself. He never considered the possibility that he might ''actually'' lose. He was looking for an equal, not a superior. After the Garou arc, he's shown falling victim to his fears of loss no matter how much he trains.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes C-D]]
* CallBack:
** Chapter 22 has the same opening shot of Z-City as Chapter 18, only this time, Z-City is heavily damaged by the debris of the giant meteor.
** When Doctor Stench gives a long winded speech to Saitama, Genos interrupts him and says it's best to sum it up in 20 words or less.
* CallingYourAttacks: Most of the heroes and villains have at least one.
** Saitama sometimes pulls out the [[RapidFireFisticuffs "Consecutive Normal Punches"]], which will completely disintegrate or outright liquefy his opponents. [[spoiler:On the rare occasion that he gets somewhat serious, he also has an ''even more insanely powerful'' "Serious Series" of moves.]]
** Genos: "INCINERATE!"
** Silver Fang teaches the "Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist" to the students at his dojo. His brother is master of the "Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist". The techniques can be combined into the "Cross Fang Dragon Slayer Fist". [[spoiler:After learning these and a dozen other "fists", Garou creates the "Monster Calamity God Slayer Fist".]]
** Even Licenseless Rider has moves like "Justice Crash" and "Justice Tackle". "Justice Bike Throw" is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. Note, that none of these moves has been effective ''in the least'' to his opponents.
** Puri-Puri Prisoner: "Angel [some sort of attack or action]!"
* CassandraTruth: When Saitama reveals that the secret to his incredible power consists of essentially body weight exercises and running [[spoiler:(it's just 100 situps, 100 pushups, 100 squats, and a 10km run daily)]], none of the other characters at the scene (Genos, Dr. Genus and Carnage Kabuto) believe it. Genos in fact claims it's a flat-out lie, saying that no one could get as powerful as him just by doing that. It's kind of justified, as that kind of workout, while not easy, isn't insanely difficult either -- Olympic athletes and special forces members do that kind of thing as a ''warmup''. And Saitama, simply by his commitment to become the strongest, broke his limiter. [[spoiler:Eventually after witnessing Saitama's true power, the redemeed Dr. Genus decides to change his life and open a takoyaki shop. When he meets Zombieman and explains "limiter theory" to him, the latter also doesn't believe a hero, let alone an average person, would be capable of doing such a thing. However when he sees Saitama using the "Serious Table Technique" on Garou, he himself starts to train harder with help from Dr. Genus.]]
* CasualDangerDialogue: Saitama regularly engages in small talk with villains or other heroes who happen to show up on the scene, as for him there's literally no threat and no stakes.
* CatapultNightmare: Happens to Saitama. [[FauxHorrific He vehemently refuses to play rock paper scissors with someone with a booger on their finger in his dream.]]
* CatchingTheSpeedster: PlayedForLaughs in ''Webcomic/OnePunchMan'' during one of Saitama's clashes with Speed-of-Sound Sonic. As Sonic {{Flash Step}}s all around him, Saitama positions himself just so, and Sonic ends up running into his fist. [[GroinAttack Crotch-first]].
* CentralTheme:
** How to grow in a world that no longer has much conflict, as it's now easier to live in than it has ever been. Has life become boring due to all the advancements?
** Dealing with boredom, depression, loneliness, and finding one's purpose in life.
** Dealing with people who look down on you for your (real or perceived) inferiority.
** Real heroism is more important than the glory or fame that might come with it.
** The struggle to become stronger, and how that's not always a good thing.
** Don't let your personal insecurities or obsessions consume you, or else you may lose some of your humanity in the process.
* ChallengeSeeker: Satama's driving motivation is to meet and spar with an opponent who will not drop dead from his trademarked OneHitKill punches. This inability to find a worthy opponent drives much of his boredom as a superhero.
** King explores this in the manga, pointing out that Saitama could seek other challenges in combat outside of victory, that he could pursue challenges outside of combat, or that he could try striving to become more relatable as opposed to just being stronger. None of these engage Saitama, only [[BloodKnight the thrill of combat]] being truly exciting for him. King suggests they just play a fighting game, but Saitama says he's numb even to that. King says he'll handicap himself so he's on Saitama's level, playing with only two fingers, and Saitama [[NotSoStoic loses his shit]].
* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: Seems to be almost a law of physics in the setting:
** Saitama became as ''strong as [[FlyingBrick Superman]]'' through sheer physical training. [[spoiler:Namely 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and running 10 km every single day![[note]]For reference, that's barely Olympic level. The best ''high school'' track and field runners do 15 km for 5 or 6 days a week.[[/note]]]]
** [[OldMaster Silver Fang Bang]], Super Alloy Darkshine, Tanktop Master, and quite a few other heroes also apparently gained their own less extreme superheroic abilities through physical training.
** Several monsters indicate they gained their powers or mutations by doing one thing obsessively, such as one guy turning into a crab monster from eating huge amounts of crab.
* ChekhovsGunman:
** [[spoiler:The boy who Saitama saved in his OriginStory has a grandfather who's a multimillionaire and thus founded the National Superhero Registry. The grandfather founded it exactly three years ago after hearing how Saitama saved his grandchild.]]
** Also, the House of Evolution. After the arc with them as the BigBad, they completely disappear from the story. Until many chapters later, [[spoiler:where it is revealed that Zombieman, the 8th ranked S-Class hero, was one of their creations.]]
* CityPlanet: Somewhere between this and MegaCity. While some adventures take place in constructed central parks and global images shows normal Earth oceans, it seems almost the entirety of the world is one continuous metropolis. They list locations as City B, City Y, etc.
* ClothingDamage:
** In Chapter 6, Saitama has all his clothes blown off by the blast from one of Genos' attacks.
** Puripuri Prisoner also inflicts this on himself whenever he fights, because his muscles are too huge for his prison uniform.
* ComicallyInvincibleHero: The comedy of Saitama's power is how anti-climatic his battles are and his response to this.
* TheComicallySerious: Saitama has a SeenItAll boredom that generally manifests as indifference to the insanity around him, although is capable of HotBlooded speeches. Genos doesn't acknowledge Saitama's weirdness one bit, and manages to come across as TheStraightMan even to Saitama.
* ContinuityNod:
** Chapter 20 has the Hero's Organization investigating Saitama's neighborhood and finding all the damage from his previous fights, with the destruction caused by the giant in the B and D cities also mentioned.
** In Chapter 99, when Child Emperor fires his last WaveMotionGun at Phoenix Man and the blast travels all the way from the underground to surface, there's a shot of the moon in the background, which still has the dent Saitama made when he was knocked into it by Boros and having to launch himself from that spot to get back to Earth.
* ConvenientlyEmptyBuilding: A lot of buildings in Z-City are abandoned, letting heroes like Saitama destroy them while fighting there without consequence. Justified by few people living there due to how frequent monster attacks are. The section where Saitama lives and most of the fights take place in particular is completely deserted.
* CouchGag: The second season's opening has, near the end and for just a few frames, the appearance of a different character every time, drawn in the super deformed, half-assed style usually reserved for Saitama and Tatsumaki.
* CoverInnocentEyesAndEars: In the aftermath of the battle between the heroes and the Monsters Association, the surviving group of heroes sees the floating body of Pig God, whom they initially mistook as a corpse. Sekingar is seen covering Waganma's eyes after the latter expresses horror at the sight.
* CrapsackWorld: Much of the world is essentially a DeathWorld for the [[{{Muggles}} civillians]], what with monsters regularly appearing and rampaging on the streets and as much as thousands dying from said rampages. It doesn't seem to have always been like this. Though unlike majority of examples of the trope, the series doesn't exactly explore its implications or effects, and said deaths of civillians usually aren't even shown.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Several S-Class heroes have no other abilities outside of smashing things. Metal Bat even seems to take pride in this fact.
* CurbStompBattle
** Saitama's specialty. Most fights end in a single blow once he arrives on the scene and even fights that take longer, such as Boros, are no more difficult: The anime shows Boros chasing Saitama down as he casually ''walks backward'', effortlessly blocking every move that comes for him before realizing he doesn't need to and constantly causing what would generally be fatal injuries with the mildest of blows.
** Stinger did not even get a chance to fight back against the Sea Folk's king. Neither did Licenseless Rider, or against anyone for that matter.
** [[spoiler:Garou gave one to the S-Class heroes after becoming a Mysterious Being. Until Saitama appears, that is.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: Despite Saitama's existential angst over having near infinite strength, his ability to defeat ANYTHING with a single punch has easily saved the lives of entire cities of people a hundred times over.
* CutLexLuthorACheck: After being defeated, the head of the House of Evolution uses his talents at creating regenerating bodies to produce unlimited octopus tentacles... and opens up a takoyaki stand.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Mosquito Girl is pretty creepy looking at first, but it helps that [[FullFrontalAssault she doesn't wear any clothes]]. Later chapters, and the anime's second season, add more of them such as the dominatrix Do-S, GorgeousGorgon Eyesight (which has a more monstrous second form) and Maiko Plasma, who looks like a geisha. The second season's opening puts all three together for a brief moment.
* CuttingTheKnot: When Genos and Saitama assault the House of Evolution, Genos simply blows up the entire building rather than bother fighting through every floor. Saitama is disappointed because he wanted a fight, but lucky for him there's a basement.
* DarkestHour: Happens few times in the story. The biggest however so far now is in Neo Heroes Saga: [[spoiler:''4 million'' robots are sent by an unknown figure to demolish everything around them, proceeding to give huge damage to various cities across the globe. Most of the S-Class heroes are either missing from the scene for various reasons, so none of the heroes who can defeat many of them in one hit aren't available. The remaining heroes at Hero Association HQ know well that once Metal Knight's defense drones fall down, it's their turn to get killed. Forte proceeds to send a message to both Blue (that he previously criticised) and Saitama to join forces and defeat a threat that doesn't seem to stop. The situation is so dire that [[EvenEvilHasStandards even]] [[{{Jerkass}} Mc]][[CorruptCorporateExecutive Coy]], a HA turned Neo Heroes executive is scared of situation and is concerned of other executives's callousness towards the attack.]] Thankfully, [[HopeBringer Saitama]] is still at the scene.
* DarkSecret: [[spoiler:The S-Class "strongest man on earth" King isn't strong at all. He just happened to be saved by Saitama a few times and received credit for it by accident.]] He didn't mention it because he didn't want to dishearten anyone and he closed his eyes when he was attacked so he didn't see the real hero take the monsters down. He's just a scared Otaku way over his head with [[FaceOfAThug terrifying presence]] and [[BornLucky ridiculous luck]].
* DeadlineNews: During the attack of Vaccine Man at the beginning, a reporter gets cut off by a SnowyScreenOfDeath, which prompts Saitama to step in.
* DecompressedComic: Very much so. Just read Chapter 25, the entire chapter is just Metal Knight arriving and landing near Genos.
* {{Deconstruction}}:
** In settings where superpowers are both common and diverse, we would expect ''massive'' disparities in individual power level, with a small minority standing head-and-shoulders above the rest. [[CurbStompBattle Curb Stomp Battles]] would be the norm.
** The series as a whole showcases just how much damage a superpowered being could really cause when he's not following a comic code. Saitama getting to the scene of an incident as soon as it begins can ''still'' be too late: The anime adaptation of Boros' ship destroying A-City includes a scene of a memorial for those who weren't lucky enough to survive the attack.
** Being the strongest man in the world isn't all it's cracked up to be. Being able to win any fight with no effort or challenge has left Saitama bored and depressed. He's so impossibly powerful that nobody believes it at first either.
** Saitama being the HumbleHero he is, he doesn't receive much praise or prizes for his actions. He's in fact so humble that he didn't even bother to register for the Hero Association as a pro hero, [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome which is why in Paradise Group arc the public considers him as a terrorist due to his appearance and Sonic doesn't even know him]]. The Hero Association Registry outright says that the "vigilantes" who don't register under their alliance for a job as a hero will be considered "weirdos" by the public. And even when Saitama becomes a registered pro hero and [[RankUp gets promoted to B-Class later]], he doesn't get any sort of fanclub for his heroic actions, due to most people considering him a fraud, [[ZeroApprovalGambit even if he makes himself look bad, so the other heroes can gain the respect they deserve]]. Although Saitama doesn't exactly mind it, and there are still people who do consider him as a true hero.
** Bang might be one of the two best martial artists out there, but he's still an old man, which means he can't fight seriously for too long. Also, because he's a martial artist first and foremost even with his skills and physical power, he's less effective against [[{{Kaiju}} giant monsters]] and massive obstacles like meteorites.
** A group of monsters think they have an advantage on Flashy Flash due to the narrow corridors limiting his ability to maneuver. However, given that he's still orders of magnitude faster than them and has no problem killing, he stabs them all in the head before they even finish talking.
** [[spoiler:The "Ninja Village" is one for Manga/{{Naruto}}. Turns out when you take children and teach them to fight and kill from such a young age, it's not some kind of scenario to laugh at the misadventures of the characters. Rather it's brutal, cruel, tortuous and ultimately monstrous to take innocent kids and turn them into blood-soaked killers who are only good for doing criminal wetwork]].
** It is revealed that there is a group called the "Hero Name Victims Association", comprised of heroes with terrible names. With how many aliases the Hero Association hands out like candy, it is not surprising that the ones who received a rather terrible hero name would eventually unionize due to the disrespect.
*** They want Saitama to be their executive, since despite his usual reputation, he is still an A-class hero who fits the criteria for their group, making him the most respectable figure to represent them.
*** Saitama shows genuine interest in joining. He has openly been frustrated by his codename, so it makes sense he would break his usual apathy as they have a goal that specifically appeals to him and actually joined them as their leader.
** Neo Heroes' first day of work does not go completely well due to several factors:
*** The battle suits they use give them enough strength to defeat weaker monsters through their numbers and teamwork with ease, but this also made them cocky which led to the defeat of several of them when they faced a monster who can take their hits and/or penetrate the armor's defense. However this isn't much of a problem since they have more than enough members to replace them with just another member who also wears a battle suit.
*** Two of their Neo Leaders are defeated by Demon-Level monsters, because before becoming heroes they were just a businessman and priest who never faced combat. In contrast the other Neo Leaders are doing well due to already having combat skills and experience, use of teamwork or face weaker monsters.
*** As a whole their first day is a reminder why Demon-level threats and above are so dangerous; if they were easy to beat, the Hero Association wouldn't have any of the problems they are currently facing nor would the S-Class exist.
** When fighting against [[spoiler:former Hero Hunter Garou]], Suiryu removes the limiter of his suit to increase his speed and strength. Does this add more strength to his already existing skills? No, because he never trained himself to withstand it thus turning him from a StrongAndSkilled martial artist to just as UnskilledButStrong as any other lower ranked Neo Hero.
* DeconstructiveParody: ''One Punch Man'' parodies nearly every superhero sub-genre in the book to tell a surprisingly brilliant satire about the importance of conflict in a world where everything is easier to achieve than ever. Saitama's invincibility and TheWorldIsAlwaysDoomed setting really highlights the absurdity of MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours and PowerLevels. The real drama in this setting featuring mad science, monsters from the deep, and alien invasions centers more around feeling disconnected from society, being OvershadowedByAwesome, seeing how CelebrityIsOverrated, and dealing with every {{Troll}}.
* DefaceOfTheMoon: Saitama gets knocked all the way to the Moon by Boros. His jump back leaves a number of circular craters that can be seen from Earth multiple times through out the story.
* DefeatMeansMenialLabor: Minor villain Hammerhead is seeking to get a law passed that will allow slackers like himself to get paid for not actually doing any work. After nearly getting killed by "Speed-O'-Sound" Sonic and Saitama (as well as having his PoweredArmor destroyed), Hammerhead wisely gives up. He can later be seen filling out a job application and then working as a doorman a bit after that.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment:
** Speed-o-Sound Sonic; as Genos puts it, "It's like saying a round circle." We later meet his fellow ninja Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame, suggesting everyone in their ninja village has a name like this, [[spoiler:including Flashy Flash.]]
** Handsomely Masked Sweet Mask.
* {{Determinator}}: The main reason Saitama has become so strong is due to his ability to stick to his hellish workout schedule for three years in a row.
** A later flashback chapter shows this may have always been the case [[spoiler:as far back as age 12, where he kept chasing a man-sized mysterious being that stole his money from two bullies that were shaking him down until it knocked him out. ]]
** Licenseless Rider doesn't seem to have won a single fight in his life and yet he refuses to give up against enemies even he knows he has no chance against.
** Metal Bat grows stronger as he receives more damage. He attributes it to "Fighting Spirit!"
* DetonationMoon: [[spoiler:Not ours, but Jupiter's moon Io gets utterly destroyed by Saitama against Awakened Garou.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: Lampshaded when Saitama calls out a crab monster for trying to kill a little boy who drew nipples on its shell with permanent marker.
* DissonantSerenity: Saitama usually approaches his fights with a completely impassive, almost bored expression. Though considering he's so comically invincible that nothing can hurt him, it highlights just how far above everyone else he is.
* DistressedDude: This is basically Genos's role when the writer needs to show how strong the MonsterOfTheWeek is before Saitama defeats it easily.
** This also applies to the C-Class hero Red Muffler who sets the standard for his class being completely average in terms of strength (which is still about 5 times greater than the average human). He is often shown with other heroes facing off against monsters that are way out of his league. He provides a useful insight for the audience on stronger heroes and their abilities. His strength provides a useful benchmark. That being said, he is often in a state of panic as he is clearly outmatched by the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Mosquito Girl loves those "hot, sticky juices" her mosquitoes collect for her.
* DontCallMeSir: Genos insists on calling Saitama 'teacher', and when Saitama tells him not to, he switches to 'master' instead. So 'teacher' it is.
* DramaticIrony: Chapter 169 of the manga has Genos [[spoiler:viewing the memories of the BadFuture timeline after reconnecting with the future core — and since everyone is alive, assumes Saitama has outplayed Garou, was massively holding back when he was fighting him, and has transcended time and space to save everyone, and thus there was no timeline where Saitama isn't guaranteed to win, as expected of someone with impeccable heroism. Nearly every word in that sentence was utterly wrong.]]
* DrunkenGlow: In OVA 6, a drunk Tatsumaki is shown with a distinct drunk Blush Sticker. She's also uncharacteristically happy given her tsundere personality.
* DubNameChange: Too many to count, due to the nature of the series with all the heroes and monsters. Usually it boils down to keeping the original Japanese name or translating it properly into English (ex. Tatsumaki or Tornado), but there are a couple outliers changed for localization purposes (ex. Fuhrer Ugly or President Ugly).
* DudeWheresMyRespect:
** Despite killing hundreds of monstrosities in his early career, Saitama never got the credit for his actions because he wasn't in the Hero Association. When he does join, his barely-passing score on the written test puts him near the bottom of C-Class. Since no one can believe a C-Class hero is actually capable of such feats, rumors start that he's stealing the credit for other heroes' work, resulting in him getting panned by civilians and fellow heroes alike.
** [[spoiler:Invoked in the aftermath of the Sea King's fight: we see Saitama getting an entire pile of hate mail from the people he saved... then we flash back to him [[ZeroApprovalGambit deliberately acting]] like a glory-stealing, selfish JerkAss who did a KillSteal on the Sea King to [[DefiedTrope prevent]] a genuine UngratefulBastard from ruining the name of the heroes who tried to stand up to the Seafolk invasion. His hate mail is due to the citizens being pissed off at his apparent scheme, with the people who know it was an act genuinely praising him.]]
* DungeonBypass: Genos attempts this with the House of Evolution by blowing up the entire building with one of his lasers without even bothering to step inside; but it's ultimately subverted, since the actual stronghold was underground.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes E-H]]
* EarlyBirdCameo:
** Several monsters Saitama defeated in flashbacks show up as still images in Episode 4 of the anime, before any of said flashbacks have been shown.
** In Murata's version, you can see [[spoiler:King among the bystanders]] while the Paradise Group is destroying the golden turd.
*** He appears even earlier in the anime, at the beginning of the first episode, as the passerby who crosses the shot right before Vaccine Man's attack (though he's barely recognizable).
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Early manga chapters had Murata at his most artistically free ways, with some chapters being very experimental, like one chapter devoted to a single fluid fight sequence as if the manga pages were animation cells, and another fully colored chapter just about Metal Knight taking flight; while these chapters had an unique feel to them, in the end those chapters proved to be a problem for the published volume releases, forcing a different numbering of chapters and some sequences having to redrawn to fit properly in the volumes. Later on, Murata is found being more contained to traditional manga panels, reserving his artistic signature to some double spread pages, thus never being troubled by the volume releases again.
* ElectronicEyes: Genos of course. They possess some kind of Search & Destroy feature. They also [[GlowingEyesOfDoom glow when he's fighting]].
* EmergencyTraineeBattleDeployment: This technically happens to Saitama as within the Heroes' Association, Saitama is a low ranked fresh graduate who takes on S-level missions exclusively. Of course, Saitama is also extremely underrated within the organization and has a wealth of unrecognized prior victories.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Saitama killed his first monster with nothing but a tie, and fought numerous others with sheer determination ''before'' he even reached his dream of defeating any opponent in one punch just like the superheroes he watched on tv as a kid.
* EpicFail:
** During Fubuki's challenge to Saitama and his "Saitama group" (composed of Genos, Bang, and King) in the hopes of making Saitama join the Blizzard Group, the challenge was to beat the opposing group in a video game, with the loser submitting to the winner's commands. While Bang and Genos were eliminated easily due to being novices. Saitama boasts about having played the video game before and not losing easily. He ends up losing faster than both Bang and Genos.
** Sonic is offered a monster cell to become stronger and warned to eat it raw. He cooks it instead and rather than transforming into a monster, it just gives him the runs.
* EstablishingSeriesMoment: The series tells you exactly what you're in for right from the start. A monstrous villain goes on a rampage, Saitama steps up, the monster boasts of its strength, Saitama [[OneHitKill does his thing]], and finally Saitama immediately complains about how anti-climactic it was.
* EventFlag: Lampshaded in the webcomic fight with Garou, when Saitama, who had been excited at the prospect of finally getting a decent fight, starts to get angry when Garou keeps hitting obvious "loser flags" with his hokey villain monologue.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Some of the S-Class heroes were shocked to see Sweet Mask [[spoiler:execute the alien survivors, who were tied up, on the spot because they were evil and did not deserve to live]].
* EvilMentor: Not so much evil, but Genos attaches himself to Saitama believing he can learn a lot from him. Saitama acquired his power through [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower practical, mundane strength training]] (and comparatively mild at that), and really just doesn't have anything to teach him as Genos being a cyborg invalidates his entire method. So he humors him with bland platitudes like re-thinking his method of combat, making Genos do all the hard work.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin:
** The story of ''One Punch Man'' is the story of a man who can defeat anything with one punch.
** Quite a few superhero names hit the nail on the head. Saitama's in particular is the unflattering [[spoiler:"Caped Baldy"]].
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Standard villain reaction to Saitama.
* ExplosiveOverclocking: Boros' Meteoric Burst.
* ExtraordinaryWorldOrdinaryProblems: Being a hero doesn't mean you can neglect daily necessities, such as buying groceries and taking a piss.
* FacialMarkings: Sonic has red/[[AdaptationalDyeJob purple]] stripes under his eyes. Tank Top Tiger has tigerish markings.
* FauxActionGirl: Ring-Ring in the martial arts tournament arc. She's the only female fighter in the tournament, and in her introduction is mentioned as having defeated all other active female martial artists in her area. Once in combat on-panel, she falls easily to a minor male character who didn't even have to use his primary weapon.
* FearlessFool: C-Class Rank 1 hero Licenseless Rider has tried to face down a horde of power-armored terrorists and a nigh-invincible monster that defeated multiple S-Class heroes, despite having no apparent superpowers of his own (one of his [[CallingYourAttacks named attacks]] is throwing his bike at them). He barely survives both encounters, but he's also one of the few people who realizes [[spoiler:Saitama actually defeated the Sea King on his own.]]
* FictionalEarth: OPM is set on a planet called Earth, but it looks totally unrecognizable from the real world. The whole series takes place on a Pangea-sized supercontinent shaped like Japan's Saitama prefecture, divided into 26 city-states each named after letters of the English alphabet, and that's just the ''beginning'' of its differences.
* FightingTheLancer: The "Sparring" two-parter. Genos takes it ''very'' seriously.
* FingerPokeOfDoom: Saitama uses a "special" attack called [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Consecutive Normal Punches]] when fighting Beast King. Of course, just one normal punch was all Saitama really needed to use.
* FishPeople: Ones calling themselves Sea Folk invade from the sea in Chapter 23. They're tough and numerous enough to warrant a full-scale hero counter-attack.
* TheForceIsStrongWithThisOne: A few characters occasionally show the ability to detect "[[PowerLevels energy levels]]" of powerful beings, allowing them to determine their locations and threat levels. Some, like Genos, use mechanical means of detection, whereas others are completely biological and can still sense it. Almost no one reacts to Saitama's power level, suggesting it might just be too high to detect.
* FormulaWithATwist: The series is a parody that completely up-ends most shounen drama about the hero gaining power or struggling to overcome new opponents by making said protagonist a ComicallyInvincibleHero. Saitama is far, far stronger than every other character, and this results both in his complete disinterest in fights (because he already knows how it will turn out) as well as exposing the flaws of the world, because most fail to even recognize his true strength.
* FreezeFrameBonus:
** In TheStinger for Episode 9, if you look closely at Madame Shibabawa's mouth while she's shouting, you can see the cough drop that ends up killing her.
** In Episode 2, when Saitama defeats Mosquito Girl, you can see ATwinkleInTheSky right after the blood spatter on the building, potentially setting up her survival.
* AFriendInNeed: Despite complaining about the way Genos follows him around, Saitama shows concern for him and even fights Carnage Kabuto on his behalf when he gets turned into [[ItMakesSenseInContext modern art]]. Eventually Genos becomes his best friend and possibly [[OnlyFriend the only true one]] Saitama claims to have.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Garou, who goes from a nobody to becoming [[spoiler:one of the strongest beings in the series capable of fighting against several S-Class heroes and defeating them]].
* FromZeroToHero: While Saitama starts as a would-be salaryman with no real goal in life, he realizes he wants to be a hero and starts training like mad. However, when he finally reaches his goal, being able to lay waste to any villain or monster with a single punch due to his ''ridiculous'' strength, he becomes ''really'' bored with this. Subverted in that, despite his heroism, nobody recognizes his feats and sees him as a very plain hero, even though he is anything but. Though admittedly, he does still ''look'' like an average guy and acts like one when he is not fighting.
* FullFrontalAssault:
** Puripuri Prisoner "transforms" into Angel Mode by [[BattleStrip ripping his clothes off]] and fighting in the nude.
** Beefcake rips out of his clothes when he grows to giant size and goes on a rampage.
---> '''Saitama:''' Put on some pants, will ya?
** Saitama himself also ends up defeating Mosquito Girl naked after Genos accidentally incinerates his clothes.
* FunTShirt:
** Saitama seems to have a liking for them.
** The redrawn manga has a penchant for these, with bystanders such as a little girl's shirt saying "School Child" or a man whose shirt reads "Ippan Zin"[[note]]Ordinary Person[[/note]]
* FunnyBackgroundEvent:
** When our heroes must climb a mountain to get to the House Of Evolution headquarters, we see the path they took and a sign saying '[[BearsAreBadNews Beware of the Bears]]'... with an unconscious, bloodied bear lying right beside it.
** One random panel in Chapter 19 has a crow with human arms and legs stealing a fishbone from a cat. [[spoiler:It's actually shown that a couple of crows mutated after eating the remains of the Beast King]].
* GaiasVengeance: The monster that Saitama defeats in Chapter 1 wanted to wipe out humanity as punishment for poisoning Earth.
* GiantFootprintReveal: The first episode has Saitama shopping when an enormous crash shakes the supermarket. When he walks out to investigate, he sees an enormous hole which is revealed in an overhead shot to be a giant human footprint.
* GivingThemTheStrip: Sonic has to slip out of his clothes to avoid getting crushed by the Sea King's grasp. Poor Genos gets an eyeful when Sonic, still naked, does his FlashStep onto the street in front of him.
--> '''Genos''': "Who was that pervert?"
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Various characters' eyes will glow with a mysterious light to make them looks more badass or scary at that particular moment, such as Saitama and Genos when they defeat monsters, or Dr. Genus when he falls into the depths of his ForScience research madness.
* GodlikeGamer: While King is [[spoiler:a complete fraud, having been confused for being a hero and "the world's strongest human" due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time multiple times]], he is a wiz at video games, having outclassed everyone, including Saitama and the best gamers among the Blizzard Group, at every game they have played.
* GoneHorriblyRight: After three years of dedicated training, so focused that it made all his hair fall out at the age of 23, Saitama got what he sought: the ability to defeat any foe with one punch. He didn't realize just how boring that would be.
* {{Gonk}}:
** Any of the family gifted with unfortunately large cleft chins.
*** Whose last name turns out to be "Bigchin."
** Pig God, on account of his obesity.
** The child Garou saved, mirroring the cleft-chinned kid Saitama saved.
** Weaponized by the Ugmon, humans turned into monsters by intense feelings of jealousy and inferiority.
* {{Gorn}}: The titular One Punch can reduce even the toughest of beings to LudicrousGibs. The two times Saitama uses a multi-hit combo (called Consecutive Normal Punches), it liquefies every part of his opponent above the waist.
* GracefulLandingClumsyLanding: [[ComicallyInvincibleHero Saitama]] is so overpowered he can kill any monster with a single punch. When he confronts the alien warlord Lord Boros, Saitama delivers just such a punch, pulverizing his armor and launching him across his throne room to slam into a supporting pillar. Boros falls from the impact crater and lands on his feet, revealing that he's strong enough to take Saitama's punches, the first enemy he's ever faced to do so, and raising his hopes that [[NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction he's finally found a challenging fight.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: The Japanese releases of the manga volumes have this English summary in the chapter index page:
-->''"My name is SAITAMA. I am a hero. My hobby is hero activity. I became strong too much. Therefore, I am very sad. Any enemies will push down with one blow. Hair was also lost. Feeling was also lost. I want the upsurge of sentiment of a battle. I would like to meet the strongest enemy. I would like to meet a matchless enemy. And I would like to push down with one blow. It is because I am a one punch-man."''
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Saitama eventually realized he isn't famous even though he's been saving the city as a hobby for quite some time. Turns out, he needed to be ''registered'' as a superhero to get credit. Without that, the general public just considers you a weirdo in tights.
* GrievousHarmWithABody: Licenceless Rider ends up on the receiving end when he tries to hold back the Sea King.
* GroinAttack: Saitama does this to Speed-o-Sound Sonic. [[spoiler:The ninja survives, as Saitama wasn't actually trying to attack him; Sonic fell onto Saitama's fist]]. He does it again in a special chapter, accidentally elbowing an attacker coming from behind in the groin [[spoiler:(coincidentally, it was Sonic)]].
** The reaction of Sonic after this groin punch is simply a [[ScreamDiscretionShot pastoral mountain scene with the words "One Moment" in large print.]]
* HammyVillainSeriousHero: This is the dynamic between Saitama and (Speed-O-Sound) Sonic. Saitama is a boring InvincibleHero (accentuated in [[VictoryIsBoring BORING]]) (well, [[ComicallyInvincibleHero boring to him anyway]]) who can't find a suitable opponent that defeats him and finds everything and everyone boring. On the other side, there's Sonic, who's an EvilIsHammy {{ninja}} who's declared "fast as the speed of sound" who finds Saitama entertaining and he self-declares as TheRival ([[UnknownRival without being noticed by Saitama]]).
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Played with regarding Saitama's training schedule. It's a straightforward but strict training schedule that he treats as the "Kill You Or Make You Stronger" variety. However, while it is a good set of body-weight exercises with cardio, there's no way such a regime would result in the spectacular strength, endurance and durability he has achieved.
* HateSink:
** Tank-Top Tiger and Tank-Top Blackhole are brothers who, [[SmallNameBigEgo despite being two very low ranking heroes in the Hero Association]], take Saitama [[GreenEyedMonster jumping Tank-Top Tiger in the rankings very personally]]. The Tank-Top Brothers rally the people of City Z (all of whom Saitama saved) against him, telling them that [[BlatantLies Saitama only took credit for the work other heroes did and that he's the reason all their homes got destroyed]]. They then get the crowd to call for Saitama's retirement and to top it off, [[BlatantLies claim he is going to attack the crowd]] so they can have an excuse to attack him. While they are [[CurbStompBattle effortlessly backhanded away by Saitama]], [[HerowithBadPublicity they do cost Saitama any fans he could have made by ruining his reputation]], with was something he had hoped could fill the void he feels.
** [[KnightTemplar Amai Mask]] aka [[ThePerfectionist Handsome Kamen]] is the number one ranked A-Class hero in the Hero Association as well as the most popular hero with the public in-universe. [[GoodIsNotNice However his actual heroic ethic is anything but]]. He berates the S-Class heroes for not preventing City A's destruction, even though there was nothing they could have done to prevent it, despite frequently ignoring monster attacks to further his career as a singer/actor. [[SociopathicHero He is also a Sociopath, regularly executing defenseless or surrendering monsters and once even mercenaries he knew were being mind-controlled]]. It says a lot that when Tatsumaki, another hero disliked in the Association, says [[TheFriendNobodyLikes that everyone hates him, she really is speaking for all the other heroes too]]. [[spoiler:This becomes subverted later on: he becomes relatable when his backstory as an ugly man who became a monster is revealed, because ironically it shows his more humanizing traits and a reason behind his behavior.]]
** [[SpoiledBrat Waganma]] is a child of Narinki, one of Hero Association's Executive who, due to that status, thinks the Hero Association exists to [[EntitledBastard cater to his every need and whim]]. He also constantly takes from others, like he did to Tareo, and is an UngratefulBastard to those helping him, like insulting Child Emperor in his fights. Even worse, to ensure his own safety, [[ItsAllAboutMe he lied about Tareo being imprisoned in the Monster Association's HQ too]]. Even [[MeaningfulName his own name]] is a play on words of "Wagamama", which means "spoiled", which he definitely is.
* HeelRealization: After Saitama defeats him in the webcomic, Garou asks why he became a hero. Saitama replies that, for him, being a hero is just a hobby. [[spoiler:Garou immediately flies into a rage ranting that a real hero isn't like that. This leads to Saitama's ArmorPiercingResponse that he settled on being a monster but really wanted to be the hero. This shocks Garou into stunned silence as Saitama accurately deconstructs his whole mindset and reasons for trying to become a monster. When he's finished, Garou quietly asks "[[AndThenWhat What should I do now]]?"]]
* HeroInsurance: Cities get leveled and destroyed all the time during the fights between the villains and heroes. Good thing Saitama doesn't have to pick up the tab to repair the damage caused by the fighting.
* HeroKiller: Subverted with Garou, one of Bang's former but still BEST students. He targets all the strongest heroes to defeat them,[[spoiler:but never actually killed any of them.]]
* HeroesRUs: What the so called "Heroes' Association" is shaping up to be by most accounts. After the Monsters' Association Arc had ended, said corporate business went into a desperate recruitment drive for new blood to refill the ranks. A great many skilled and well known potential recruits flatly [[DefectorFromDecadence turned them down]] due to how far the organization's standards had plummeted.
* HeroicBSOD: Saitama has a brief one when he realizes he's become too strong and can't enjoy fighting any more. Luckily, Genos then turns up to make things interesting. Then he has another one when he realizes he's not famous.
* HeroicRROD: Overusing psychic power will make you bleed from your nose and mouth, and might reopen old wounds. [[spoiler:An injured Tatsumaki was pushed to the limit brawling with Saitama.]]
* HeroicSecondWind: When Mumen Rider takes on the Deep Sea King, Rider has a sudden burst of it, complete with a RousingSpeech dripping of HeroicResolve, and even gets a crowd cheering him on. [[DeconstructedTrope Deep Sea King still flattens Rider with one hit]]. However, this actually makes it even ''more'' heroic, given that he's perfectly aware he doesn't have a chance and is trying to do the right thing anyway, even if it kills him, and [[HoldTheLine his actions ultimately help buy time for Saitama to arrive]].
* HistoryRepeats: Despite his overwhelming power, Saitama is initially placed near the bottom of Class C due to his poor written test results. A later chapter shows a good deal of S-Class heroes were also very low-ranked despite their abilities due to not caring much about rankings: [[spoiler:The highest ranked shown was Bang at the bottom of Class B, while Metal Bat and Watchdog Man were near the bottom of Class C. Superalloy Darkshine was the ''lowest'' ranked hero of all.]]
* HollywoodCyborg:
** Genos; it's currently unknown how much, if any, of his body is still organic. However, he's noted as being extremely attractive looking anyway, and has an entire legion of {{Fangirl}} volunteers.
** Genos is looking for a rogue cyborg that destroyed his hometown at the start of the series. Minor characters Armored Gorilla, Jet Nice Guy and [[JokeCharacter Armored Clerk]] are also cyborgs despite looking like fairly normal animals and humans in armor rather than techno-organic monstrosities.
* HopelessBossFight: Saitama is a inversion; the hero is the one that can't be defeated instead of the villain. He also respects the willingness of others to engage in fights like these to protect others, or from a sense of duty. Notable examples include Licenseless Rider's stand against the Sea King and Charanko challenging [[spoiler:Garou]] by himself.
* HotterAndSexier: The original ONE version has only a few key female characters appearing in and out of story; the most recurring ones, Tatsumaki and Fubuki, are never said to be particularly beautiful by other characters and ONE’s simple drawings don’t put the sisters in {{Fanservice}} situations. Murata on the other hand really makes use of his high grade art style to make pretty much all female characters in the series have varying degrees of titillation, with Tatsumaki and Fubuki having their beauty on display in practically every panel they appear with [[FormFittingWardrobe borderline skintight outfits]], and several daring cover pages that have Fubuki posing as if during a photoshoot session, like a gravure model; also if a new batch of heroes that didn’t exist in ONE’s version happen to have a new female amongst them, it’s very likely she will be a very alluring woman as well.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes I-L]]
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Saitama rarely puts any effort into fighting because of how powerful he is; the rare person that can stand up to him (i.e. Boros and Garou) will face his Serious Series.
* IAmNotShazam: The series is named ''One-Punch Man'' and it is intended to refer to Saitama as well as accurately capturing the essence of his powers and super-hero identity. However, he is never called "One-Punch Man" in-universe. Currently his assigned name with the Heroes Association is [[spoiler:the "Bald Cape" (often dubbed as "Caped Baldy")]].
* IdiosyncraticDifficultyLevels: The Hero Association's disaster levels are a non-video game example:
** Wolf: Appearance of a being or group that might pose a threat.
** Tiger: Threat to an unspecified yet large number of human lives.
** Demon: Threat to a whole city or its functionality.
** Dragon: Threat to multiple cities.
** God: Threat to humanity.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: Chapters in the manga are called Punches.
* IdiotHero: He's not so much an idiot, but Saitama is very [[PerceptionFilter unperceptive]] about certain things. While it seems he got through school, he is still a little BookDumb sometimes. Sometimes, like in a flashback, he beats the monster of the week without even realizing it. In addition, he misses some facts or easily inferred pieces of knowledge, he didn't know about the hero ranking system despite people talking about it around him, he forgets people's names a lot even if he's been told them several times, and he often misinterprets information that he hears or gets sidetracked easily. Much of this has to do with how lazy he is. The biggest offense, though, is that he never realized [[AchievementsInIgnorance that people can't get as strong as he did through strength training]]. The only thing that he knows is that he did it somehow and he still believes that anyone else can succeed in the same way despite being told how impossible that is.
* IgnoredEnemy: Borderline with Tatsumaki, who is technically an ally but is extremely belligerent to her fellow heroes. In particular, she refuses to believe Saitama could be a competent hero and trash-talks him at length, which he just ignores.
* ImpactSilhouette: The result of Garou trying to attack King, with Saitama right next to him. Entirely focused on defeating the S-Class, Garou gets completely blindsided by Saitama's kick, which sends him through a nearby wall, leaving a neat hole shaped like his body. Then the heroes just walk away, pondering what the infamous "hero killer" could look like...
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes:
** Most of the registered superheroes wear these, from a snakeskin suit to ''Franchise/FinalFantasy''-esque armor, with a bonus chapter dedicated to heroes participating in a costume contest.
** Saitama averts this by dressing in what looks like pajamas.
** S-Class hero Watchdog Man is a guy in a dumb-looking dog costume who [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass single-handedly takes care of Q-City, one of the biggest hotspots of monster activity]]. When he's introduced, we see him [[AtopAMountainOfCorpses sitting on top of a massive pile of monster corpses]].
* InexplicablyAwesome: Nobody seems to have any real understanding of ''how'' Saitama actually got his superpowers.
** Saitama himself believes he got his power (and lost his hair) due to repeated physical training every day for 3 years. Everyone quickly points out that not only was his training regime relatively mundane, but no amount of training could make the things he does even remotely possible.
** A flashback chapter parodies the idea of some unknown factor empowering him. Saitama suffers strange pains when his training routine started to give him powers, implying some sort of transformation... only for it to turn out he got a stomach ache and toothache from eating a huge amount of candy from an old lady he helped the week before.
** Dr Genus theorizes that Saitama somehow exploited the CharlesAtlasSuperpower properties of the setting to through sheer hard work break the very ''concept'' of a "[[PowerLimiter limiter]]" on himself, allowing him to basically completely ignore any common sense or physical rules of reality others who gained or developed superpowers get held back by. But he's still so lost on how Saitama actually ''did'' that, that he gave up on creating an ultimate being and opened a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takoyaki Takoyaki]] stand instead.
* InformedAbility: PlayedForLaughs. Many characters boast about or have others talk up their skill, strength, powers, or [[InformedAttribute other attributes]]. But, [[ComicallyInvincibleHero Saitama]] being [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter Saitama]], he regularly [[OneHitKill defeats]] or [[OvershadowedByAwesome overshadows]] them before they can show it [[NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction to Saitama's dismay]].
* InhumanableAlienRights: Once a normal human becomes a monster, they lose all their rights as humans. [[spoiler:As a result, Neo Heroes is allowed to hunt and kill Amai Mask once he is revealed as a monster, even though he hasn't committed any crime or harmed anyone besides monsters.]]
* InstantFanclub: Genos accumulates an off-screen one thanks to a popularity poll which deems him one of the most handsome (and therefore highest-ranking) heroes. He was given the nickname "Cyborg Prince" by his fans in-verse.
* InSeriesNickname: Every hero is given one by the Hero Association. The names usually describe their appearance or powers.
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: "Riding the bicycle of justice, Licenseless Rider enters the scene!"
* InvincibleHero:
** Deconstructed with Saitama who seems to exist as a TakeThat to these kinds of heroes, showing how, over time, VictoryIsBoring both for the audience and the characters themselves.
** Subverted with Genos. Although a very competent hero, he gets wrecked at least once per arc. At times even after it appears he has won. Doubles as a TakeThat to other manga in which the hero usually just gets cosmetic wounds. Genos loses limbs, gets his face cracked and other assorted injuries. These are usually fixed by the next episode, however.
* {{Irony}}: Flashy Flash lectures Saitama that he should strive to finish every opponent with a single strike and without leaving a trace. Saitama doing exactly that is the whole reason he isn't incredibly famous.
* IWasHavingSuchANiceDream: Saitama's epic and exhilarating battle against the subterraneans is cut short by his alarm clock.
* JadedWashout: Saitama, before becoming a hero. Even as a kid, he didn't feel his future looking up. And even after becoming a hero, once he reached his current InvincibleHero status, his outlook on life is back to square one.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** That UngratefulBastard at the end of the Sea Monster Arc may have said some disrespectful things about the heroes, but he does have a point when he talks about the heroes' classes not meaning a thing, as some heroes, like Fubuki and especially Saitama, are proven stronger than the class they are placed in.
** Metal Knight points out that sending in swarms of Heroes to fight the Monster Association to rescue a single child is foolish, and it would be far easier and more effective to just bomb the hideout. Considering how many people get hurt or killed in the process, and Waganma being a despicable brat, he had a point.
* KilledMidSentence: Kamakyuri (one of the monsters from the House of Evolution) attempts an ambush by crashing down through the ceiling of Saitama's apartment. He begins to introduce himself but is killed instantly by an irritated Saitama, who demands he pay for the damage.
* LampshadeHanging: During Saitama and Genos' first meeting with the S-Class heroes, Zombieman notes that no one seems particularly enthusiastic as well as wondering if Pig God ever stops eating.
* LastEpisodeThemeReprise: The opening theme plays during Saitama's fight with Boros in the Season 1 finale.
* LeaveHimToMe: Genos attempts this, but is [[LongSpeechTeaTime interrupted when Saitama plants both opponents in the concrete]].
* LegoGenetics: The members of the House Of Evolution, including a mosquito, a lion, a slug, a frog, a mole, and a cyborg gorilla.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Saitama has a few adaptations to VideoGame/{{MUGEN}}, and as the source, the character is considered as this, since he only teleports or receives zero damage and one punch of him is a OneHitKill, no matter how powerful, cheap or broken is the opponent. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eml4MNwC2c Here's a proof for one of these adaptations]].
* LetsGetDangerous: Any time Saitama is [[StylisticSuck drawn with actual detail]], it's a cue that the fight is basically over.
** If you survive Saitama's [[MegatonPunch Normal]] [[OneHitKill Series]] (or piss him off bad enough), he brings out the Serious Series and then you realize that his GameBreaker level of power from earlier was him ''barely trying''.
* LickedByTheDog: Garou is defended by the kid he threatened to kill in the webcomic
* LightningBruiser: [[spoiler:The Sea King]] is described as this when he fights against Sonic.
* LoafingInFullCostume: Saitama has worn his costume while doing mundane things such as grocery shopping.
* LostInTranslation: Some jokes didn't translate that well to the western audiences due to cultural differences. For example, Saitama saying that he won't let the kid get killed due to Japan's declining birth rate might fly over the heads of western people. The other ones are usually involve a unique Japanese food names.
* LovableSexManiac: Puri-Puri-Prisoner is one, however, he's so worried that he might end up assaulting someone that doesn't reciprocate his feelings that he resigned himself to being imprisoned when not superheroing around. As a result, he's said to inflict lots of [[BlackComedyRape black comedy rape]] to the inmates that he thinks deserve it.
* LowerDeckEpisode:
** The "Rumor" two-parter, focusing on an outside investigation into rumors about Saitama's neighborhood.
** One special chapter features a B-Class hero who finds himself in over his head.
* LudicrousGibs: The result of any suitably powerful blow, such as humans being struck by monsters or Saitama punching anything at all. The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atxYe-nOa9w anime opening]] features Saitama with fist upraised, casually walking away from the ''rain of blood-soaked entrails'' that used to be a monster. He later punches a giant demon so hard in the fist that the demon's flesh vaporizes, leaving behind a flailing skeleton.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes M-P]]
* MadeOfIron:
** Whatever training Saitama took didn't just make him insanely strong, but also gifted him with incredible endurance, so much so that hitting him can actually harm his opponent.
** Hammerhead, the leader of the bald terrorist group, has an unusually thick skull which allows him to survive a lot of head trauma.
** Super Alloy Darkshine's basically a lower-level Saitama in this regard.
* MagicPants:
** Played straight with Saitama's pajama pants when he fights the Subterraneans, although it ''is'' a dream sequence. It's later averted when Genos incinerates ''all'' of Saitama's clothing as collateral damage against Mosquito Girl.
** Also averted with Puripuri Prisoner, who frequently ends up buck-naked.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction:
** After Genos' entire arm is ripped off, he only glances at it blankly for a moment before going back to his fight.
** After his brush with Carnage Kabuto:
--->'''Genos''': [[CaptainObvious That didn't work]].\
'''Saitama''': Dude, he cracked your face open!
* MesACrowd:
** The scientist who founded the House Of Evolution made numerous clones of himself to assist with research. They get turned into a RedShirtArmy.
** Black Sperm is composed of trillions of copies of himself which can merge deceptively as one opponent or a massive army.
* MeteorSummoningAttack: In her first appearance in the anime, Tatsumaki kills a giant dinosaur-like monster by summoning a meteor.
* MileLongShip: The ship Boros and the Dark Matter Thieves arrive in is positively massive. According to Genos' notes, the ship is more than 15 kilometers long by 9 kilometers wide, and bristling with enough firepower to completely demolish City A (with the sole exception of the Hero Association Headquarters) in a single bombardment.
* MistakenForBadass: [[spoiler:King is a FakeUltimateHero who reached S-Rank by accidentally receiving credit for defeating various monsters(all of which were killed by Saitama). In reality he is a completely ordinary guy, but is too afraid to correct everyone's assumptions.]]
* MistakenForGay: When Saitama is informed that a scientist has "taken a great interest in your body" (for experiments), he replies that he doesn't swing that way. Genos corrects him.
* MonstrosityEqualsWeakness: Saitama claims that Garou has never been weaker after he [[spoiler:changes into an even bigger mysterious being while trying to beat him, as opposed to the smaller more human monster he was before.]]
* MookHorrorShow:
** Tends to happen to minor villains, especially the [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman non-human ones]], as once Saitama has committed to fighting them he doesn't let up until they're splattered across the city. The only mercy is that their horror tends to be brief.
** Carnage Kabuto's experience when he senses how powerful Saitama is. All the more terrifying because Carnage Kabuto was indicated to be the most powerful being encountered so far (stronger than even the several-hundred-foot tall giant from an earlier issue), and has never feared anything in his life, but in seconds, he goes from being a SmugSuper to screaming in fear and immediately breaking off his attack.
---> ''All my instincts are screaming at me... Get away from him! He's dangerous!''
** The crew aboard the Dark Matter Thieves' spaceship arrive on Earth get to witness this firsthand when Saitama boards their ship hovering well above the city. He single-handedly slaughters most of its crew, and damages large portions of their ship. He kills several of their elite fighters, which further terrifies them. Similarly, Melgalzald gets a taste of this as well after the ship's DeathFromAbove attack gets negated completely by Tatsumaki, [[spoiler:who then proceeds to turn the shells around, and flings them back onto the alien ship.]]
* MrFanservice: Several male characters are walking eye-candy in the manga, predominantly Sonic or Garou, who regularly expose their beautifully sculpted bodies either because of their FormFittingWardrobe and ClothingDamage.
* MsFanservice: Among all the female characters, Fubuki is the one who gets the most exposure mainly through artworks outside of the story. Some female monsters also get to show off their curves.
* MuggingTheMonster: Anyone that attacks Saitama out of the blue, not realizing that he's so far above them. On two separate occasions, "Snake Fist" Sneck, Tanktops Black Hole, and Tiger try to bully or defame Saitama into quitting professional superhero work, only to quickly realize his insane power, which they all wrote off as a trick or joke, ''is completely real''. Bang lampshades this as he observes Tiger and Black Hole's attempt. They could have gotten away with the attempt to shame Saitama (not that Saitama gives a damn), but Bang pretty much immediately declared that they were ''screwed'' the moment they attempted a newbie crushing.
* MundaneMadeAwesome:
** Saitama can defeat anybody with a single punch. This means that should he deign to pull out such simple moves as a combo that anybody can master (The Normal Chain Punch, for example), better start praying for his opponent. Exaggerated when used in conjuncture with his "Serious Series" moves, such as "Serious Consecutive Side Hops" and "Serious [[FlippingTheTable Table Flip]]".
** The two tasks which Saitama finds the most daunting? Swatting mosquitoes and finding a lost cat.
** An entire faction of heroes, reaching all the way to S-Class, is dedicated to Tank Tops.
* MundaneUtility: Genos can use his blasters to dry off dishes. His heat sinks are rather good at dispersing heat from a hot-ramen eating contest as well.
* ANaziByAnyOtherName: Choze from the tournament arc and his clan have been selectively breeding their genes for generations to make the strongest warriors. Once they teach the "plebians" about their strength, they plan to continue getting stronger until they rule the world. Saitama tells him that they are basically doing the same thing as breeding corn. No matter how sweet you make it, corn is just corn. Saitama then beats the guy in 2 seconds.
* NoEndorHolocaust: Subverted. Cracking a [[spoiler:giant meteor]] with a single punch? Awesome. [[spoiler:Its falling debris destroying the city?]] Not so much. It's also sadly true that RealLife heroes can end up blamed for their actions, such as doctors being sued for trying and failing to save someone injured in front of them or crowds turning on firefighters who saved lives but not property.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Despite his limitless strength and reflexes, Saitama still somehow has trouble with mosquitos. Though it's unlikely they could pose him any real threat, it's very convenient that Mosquito Girl decides to consolidate the power of her swarm into herself, giving him one human-sized target to aim at instead of millions of tiny ones.
* NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction: This is Saitama's initial driving force: the immense boredom he suffers from achieving his dream of being the strongest.
** Despite how many battles he ends up fighting, the fact it only takes a single blow for Saitama to defeat any opponent has left him rather listless.
--->'''Saitama:''' I became the hero I had always dreamed of being. But how can it be that, even though I should be satisfied, I feel so empty...?\
'''Saitama:''' Having overwhelming power is pretty boring...
** Boros, leader of a group of space raiders, became bored with galactic conquering due to how easy it became. Saitama, however, finds the idea of rampaging across space just because you're bored moronic.
* NoSell:
** Thus far nothing has been able to harm Saitama; not even Boros or Garou were able to even bruise him. He doesn't even bother dodging most attacks because they won't do anything to him anyway. A comment from his fight with Genos implies that he generally only bothers to dodge to avoid having his uniform destroyed.
** He's also incredibly resistant to psychic powers. [[spoiler:Tatsumaki can only barely lift him a few feet off the ground (she ''was'' injured, but nothing has given her any trouble before).]]
** Happens to Genos when he underestimates his enemy. Carnage Kabuto [[spoiler: defeats his Incinerate attack by just ''exhaling.'']]
** In the manga, Super Alloy Darkshine manages to do this to Evil Natural Water's water jets that can normally cut through stone and metal. Darkshine happily lets them wash over his muscles while posing because the water makes him even shinier.
** Garou manages to do this to Saitama for a short period, being able to perfectly predict Saitama's punches and dodge them before they happen.
* NobleDemon: Garou to a tee, oddly enough, being that he doesn't take to nor condone underhanded tactics, engage in mass slaughter other Mysterious Beings are known for and act more or less as a fair and honorable combatant. Also he didn't take too kindly to a [[CorruptPolitician sleazy Hero's Association coordinator]] using his [[BlatantLies questionable ties]] to certain celebrity personnel to [[CasanovaWannabe hit on some groupies]] as said corporate lowlife [[KickTheSonOfABitch can attest]].
* NominalHero: InUniverse, the term "hero" is not used in the traditional sense anymore and designates someone from the Hero Association. Consequently, every hero known so far is technically a NominalHero by being [[PunchClockHero Punch Clock Heroes]]. In fact a good chunk of the low-level heroes from the association are nothing more than glory-hogs seeking to look good. Others like Genos or Amai Mask seek revenge against the monsters; Superalloy Darkshine wants to feel good about himself; King was forcibly drafted into the association; Terrible Tornado simply enjoys slaughtering monsters. It's still mostly a downplayed trope however, since many of heroes put their lifes at stake to protect civillians and are [[HiddenHeartofGold deep down good people]].
** This gets especially subverted later in the MA arc, where the Monster Association stirred up such an unprecedented crisis that is virtually almost an end-of-the-world scenario, countless heroes injured or otherwise quickly stepped up to initiate evacuation and support even when they weren't ordered by the Association, all purely on their own will because it's the right thing to do.
** Saitama fits the example since he is a hero for a hobby. Although he is a decent man, he explicitly only wants to fight monsters, having no interest in saving civilians or actively stopping the threat of the monsters. He in fact slacks off his duty as a hero, only doing the minimum required to stay active. This gets subverted later, when he goes through CharacterDevelopment, like some other heroes.
** S-Class Hero Metal Knight appears to have no interest in actually saving people or bringing justice, only fighting monsters to test weapons or study them. Private conversations with his former protege Child Emperor reveal that he does believe in a sort of justice and is fighting for it (and encourages Child Emperor to do the same), but it's so cold and pragmatic that it doesn't look heroic at all. While the other heroes have their own foibles and personality flaws, Bofoi is mainly interested in obtaining more experimental subjects instead of saving lives.
** A-Class hero Amai Mask is a {{Bishonen}} pop idol who cares more about appearance than saving lives and has enough sway with the Hero Association that he gets a say over which heroes are allowed to advance to S-Class. Best showed when during AlienInvasion, he only shows up after the battle is over, so he can bawl out the other heroes for not doing a good enough job (in his opinion) and [[EstablishingCharacterMoment slaughter some aliens who had already surrendered]]. [[spoiler: Supreme Hero Arc in webcomic seems to give a more deconstructed variaton of this trope for Amai Mask however, and it gets a bit more complicated.]]
* NonPoweredCostumedHero: Many of the lower-class registered heroes seem to have no superhuman powers at all, Licenseless Rider being the most obvious example (although his powers may have been overshadowed by the supervillains he faced).
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Normally, Saitama looks like he's drawn very simply, in comparison to the detailed designs of everything around him. [[ArtShift Sometimes he shifts to a more serious-looking action style.]]
* NotQuiteFlight: Saitama can't fly, but as his jump distance is effectively limitless (he can even jump between the Earth and Moon), he might as well. However, he generally runs to his destinations when he's in a hurry.
* NotSoDifferentRemark:
** Saitama has a brief moment of this after seeing Hammerhead do the same ridiculous windmill attack (spinning his arms) that he used to do as a kid. He later thinks how if he took a different route, he could've end up just like him.
** Happens during his fight with Boros who, like him, became the most powerful being on his planet and lost interest in life. Saitama would SURELY NOT find an end to his boredom in destroying other planets.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: Hammerhead and his followers claim to be going on a rampage against the wealthy and powerful because of the corruption of the wealthy, but in reality most of them, especially Hammerhead, simply don't want to have to really work for a living. Hammerhead changes his ways after most of his followers are killed by the bloodthirsty ninja Sonic (an encounter that Hammerhead himself barely survives), and he is spared by Saitama.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: Speed-o-Sound Sonic, insulted by a perceived lack of respect by Saitama, draws his blade and tries to take off Saitama's head. Saitama responds by [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRlkz1drJJs by biting it]] as it hits, snapping the blade into pieces.
* ObiWanMoment: A very [[TearJerker effective example]] is done by Licenseless Rider, when he's in a hopeless fight against the Sea King.
-->'''Licenseless Rider:''' No one expects much from me... They think [[CListFodder a C-Class hero]] won't be much help. I know that better than anyone. I'm not good enough for Class B. I'm weak. I know that much. No one has to tell me I have no chance of beating you. I already... know that! And yet, I must try. It's not about winning or losing! It's about me [[HoldTheLine taking you on right here, right now!]]
* OddFriendship: After the Monster Association Arc, Saitama, who is probably responsible for more monster deaths than any other hero, strikes up an unlikely friendship with Manako, a cowardly diminutive monster who initially planned to kill him. The two bond over a shared [[BigEater love of food]] and can be seen goofing around together in the background of some panels.
* OffWithHisHead: Sonic's signature method of attack. [[http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mdivmuynRZ1qg0ruko1_500.png "Why is everyone collapsing all of a suddennnnnnnnnnnnn..."]]
* OffhandBackhand: To a giant bug that had just mopped the floor with 5 registered heroes.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: It's not rare with Saitama. A major example: toward the end of the Tournament arc Gouketsu is introduced, a giant Dragon-level monster who gets ''a lot'' of build-up and seems a future ArcVillain. [[spoiler: Saitama effortlessly obliterates him off-screen, just like nearly every opponent he faces; only his head is left.]]
* OhCrap: This is character's often reaction, when they experience Saitama's true strength, even worse when it's Saitama targeting them, as Genos, [[spoiler:Silver Fang]], Garou, Suiryu or [[spoiler:Tatsumaki]] found out.
** Carnage Kabuto, who is the first villain to be able to accurately gauge Saitama's power. Before doing so, he was supremely confident in his invincibility, but then his survival instinct kicks in.
*** In the same part Saitama suffers a massive one when Carnage Kabuto enters Carnage Mode for a week, [[spoiler:due to the fact of having forgotten that day was Saturday and he was missing grocery deals, thus he one-punched Asura in regret of having forgotten that.]]
** Also, anything rated threat level Demon tends to cause a MassOhCrap for everyone in the city.
** The previously smug superhero candidates suffer a collective one when they see Saitama's strength on the Hero Association recruiment tests.
** Fubuki is flabbergasted upon seeing King entering Saitama's apartament and then talking like friends, making her entire speech about "rookie recruiting" and teaming up to grow stronger proven wrong.
** After being hurt by Watchdogman and attacked by a group of A and B class heroes, Garou is about to go tend to his wounds when suddenly Genos lands behind him intent on killing him.
* OneDialogueTwoConversations: While the Blizzard Group's out earning money to get a decent car, Fubuki returns with one-third of the amount in a short amount of time while the rest of the group are scraping by with their part-time work. After they question how she was able to do such a thing her dialogue makes it sound like she prostituted herself, until she explains she was capturing criminals for their bounties. Then it's revealed this is what she originally ordered her group to do in the first place, but they mistook her order as being to get part time work.
* OneHitKill: This is the premise of the story and basically Saitama's super power. He's so ridiculously strong that he can kill anything in one punch, even when he's holding back.
* OneWingedAngel: Several monsters have a transformation that they use when someone presents them with a challenge. Generally these make them both more monstrous in appearance([[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman thus less human and easier to justify killing]]) and ''substantially'' more dangerous:
** Mosquito Girl starts mostly humanoid with various insect features. After absorbing her mosquito swarm, she TurnsRed and retains her human features while the insect ones become more pronounced.
** Carnage Kabuto starts as a combination of a man and a giant rhinoceros beetle. When he enters "carnage mode" his coloration changes from fleshy to green and purple and his face becomes more demonic.
** The Sea King is first seen as a fish man wearing various royal regalia. When it starts to rain, the atmospheric moisture allows him to bulk up, becoming considerably more fishlike.
** Boros is humanoid with alien coloring and one eye. While fighting Saitama he goes through several transformations that each make him larger and more alien in appearance.
* OutclassedAtTheGym: Subverted. The Hero Association application process includes multiple physical exams to test physical abilities. Saitama is ridiculed by the bigger and buffer other applicants for his relatively lean musculature. However, Saitama uses his insane strength to shatter every test record by insane margins. The other applicants quit on the spot.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Most professional heroes get this treatment given just how [[TheWorfEffect ineffectual they can be against monsters]] that the higher ranks or Saitama can obliterate without breaking a sweat. When Saitama and Genos apply for the Hero Registry, Saitama scored off the charts physically, but utterly failed the written exam and was placed into mid-tier C class. His blase attitude is exactly what kept him from getting any notoriety in the first place, and it's shown that many heroes maintain their position based entirely on strength of charisma. Genos was inducted directly into the class S based on both physical abilities and the written exam, and despite his disinterest in the overall hero work (his goal is revenge oriented) he better fit the traditional hero archetype and his {{Bishonen}} looks make him very popular online. To maintain his position in C class Saitama had to get involved in at least one heroic event a week, and had to do so without Genos around otherwise he would get the credit.
* PainfulPersona: King is one of the strongest heroes around, has killed multiple high-tier monsters, able to terrorize monsters into surrendering just by looking stoically at them or leaving them to hear the "DOOM DOOM DOOM" of his King Engine long enough. [[spoiler:He's actually a perfectly mundane human, his stoic face is simply that he's too terrified to show any emotions, the King Engine is actually the abnormally-loud beating of his heart (again, in fear), and his victories were actually the result of his coincidentally being near Saitama's victims before Saitama registered as a hero]]. All King wants to do is be left alone and play his eroges in peace, but keeps up the charade because it gave people such hope to think the monsters could be defeated. Fortunately, he ends up becoming friends with Saitama, greatly improving his chances of survival.
* ParodySue:
** Saitama, especially early on, is a parody of the GodModeSue, being [[StoryBreakerPower too powerful]] in comparison to those he faces. However, it's shown that he's incredibly disillusioned by his immense power and values finding a WorthyOpponent over really being heroic. As the story moves on, he starts to lose his Sue status thanks to being forced to fight seriously on a couple occasions, although even that is described in-universe as him barely trying. Depending on the reader, he may gain more traditional Sue attributes due to becoming more like the IdealHero.
** Most other traditional Sue elements get handed to Genos. He's [[TheAce handsome, rich, popular, talented, makes his hero debut as class S at age 19]], broods and talks at length about his DarkAndTroubledPast, and [[DestructiveSavior gets away with causing a lot of damage to his surroundings]]. What puts him on the parody spectrum is that for everything he has going for him, he's usually the one getting his ass kicked, primarily due to his own recklessness.
** [[invoked]] Garou is a parody of VillainSue, being an unstoppable force that keeps getting more powerful with no real explanation and trounces everyone until Saitama comes along. However, [[spoiler:his status as the most powerful antagonist faced yet is effectively neutered due to how he's never killed anyone besides monsters and was never planning on it. Garou was ''never'' an actual threat and half-assed trying to be a villain.]]
* PayingItForward: The hero association got its start when the grandson of a multibillionaire was saved from a monster attack by an unknown man (actually Saitama, but he's completely unaware that this is the case).
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Any individual rated threat level Demon or above qualifies for this; Demon-level threats threaten an entire city, Dragon-level threats threaten multiple cities, and God-level threats threaten ''all of mankind.''
** Genos is sometimes this, blowing up large buildings with his ArmCannon early on at the drop of a hat. Tornado of Terror also manages this by way of her namesake PsychicPowers. She's even destroyed [[spoiler:Saitama's house]] just lifting the Monster Association out from under the ground.
** '''Saitama'''. His punches destroy monsters, leave massive holes in buildings, and are strong enough to destroy meteorites that a MacrossMissileMassacre and Genos' WaveMotionGun failed to damage. Whether he even ''has'' an upper limit is unknown, but based on his feats in the manga, he could destroy the world if he felt so inclined.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: The amount of heroes who actually ''behave'' like superheroes is very low. Silverfang at one point bemoans how many of the S-Class heroes are PowerLevel-obsessed and don't act at all heroic after Tatsumaki ends up scrapping Genos over a petty insult, and Licenseless Rider ends up holding top rank in the C-Class heroes despite being an unpowered {{Muggle}} because he's actually willing to ''act'' superheroic. However as the story progresses it's revealed that many of the heroes are JerkWithAHeartOfGold at worst or have many HiddenDepths.
* PlotArmor: So far, as of a middle of Neo Heroes Saga in webcomic, NOBODY from a heroes side was KilledOffForReal, with worst cases getting handicapped or seemingly dying from injuries only to be saved thanks for HealingFactor few moments later or some form of robotic limb. Averted for many civilians (whose deaths however usually aren't shown), many monsters and few human criminals.
* PocketDimension: [[spoiler:In the official release of Child Emperor's fight with Phoenix Man, the latter has one called "Phoenix Space", which portrays the monster's mental state of mind. Both of them spend quite some time there, with Phoenix Man explaining his motives and planning young hero to join his own side... until [[RealityWarper Saitama]] [[BigDamnHeroes arrives]].
* PoliceAreUseless: Zigzagged and Discussed. In a side chapter in the redraw, Saitama is brought into a police station by officers suspicious of him (e.g. out wandering around during a working day, blood on his hands, living alone in an abandoned area) and because he vaguely resembles an image of a criminal in the area. Despite this the officers are shown to be ReasonableAuthorityFigures who remain professional despite their clear suspicion, and during their questioning the chief laments how the police are now effectively seen as this due to the flashier and cooler Hero Association overshadowing them in the public's eye despite [[DudeWheresMyRespect all the legitimate work they do for society]]. I'’s later shown that while the police are in fact no match for threats at Demon level and above, their criticisms of the Hero Association as corrupt [[GlorySeeker Glory Seekers]] aren't unfounded and the chief later admits that Saitama was a true hero after he defeated the monster and let the police have the credit to prevent them from being humiliated in the public eye.
* PostAdventureAdventure: Saitama was written with the intention of being the stereotypical overpowered shonen protagonist after the ''end'' of their story. He's already gone through the hero's journey that earned him that strength, so now he just lives his life while hoping to find someone who won't explode into LudicrousGibs with just [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin one punch]].
* PowerAtAPrice: DoubleSubverted. Dr. Genus tells Zombieman Saitama's power came at a great price... he became bald. However, he plays it straight right after, indicating that as he sees it the ''real'' price of Saitama's power is his alienation.
* PowerLevels:
** Of a sort, for both heroes and villains. Registered heroes rank in four groups (C-Class, B-Class, A-Class, and S-Class), and have numerical ranks within those. These are of course not accurate measures of their strengths as, after registering, Saitama starts at a low point in C-Class despite having set records in every physical test. Most human villains seem to be ranked similarly, at least as far as the class system goes. Monsters meanwhile are measured with Disaster Levels denoting their power in terms of scope of possible destructive capacity (Wolf, for potential threats; Tiger, threats to an unspecified large number of human lives; Demon, [[ApocalypseHow/{{Class0}} threat to a whole city or its functionality]]; Dragon, [[ApocalypseHow/{{Class1}} threat to multiple cities]]; God, [[ApocalypseHow/Class3A threat to humanity]]).
** A special chapter has Child Emperor create a device that can calculate a person's physical strength numerically. As a benchmark, the average C-Class such as Red Muffler was 100. B-Classes like Darkness Blade were several hundred, A-Classes like Stinger and Great Philosopher were over 1000, a regular human was 22, a bear was 905, and a Demon-level monster was 6999. The device can't give readings for people who are weaker than an average person. It also can't read Genos since he's mostly mechanical and when it tries to read Saitama [[ReadingsBlewUpTheScale it breaks and can't give a reading]], leading Child Emperor to assume he's out of shape (while assuming the same result from King means his power [[ReadingsAreOffTheScale exceeds 9999]]). Fubuki's psychic powers also can't be quantified (she comes in at 19 physically, regular human level), with Child Emperor concluding that the device is pointless.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow:
** Inverted. Saitama's training made all his hair fall out.
** Boros plays this straight, however. His hair grows longer and longer until his hair is identical to a [[Manga/DragonBall Super Saiyan 3's hair]].
* PracticeTargetOverkill:
** When Saitama goes through the physical application for hero registration, he effortlessly destroys a punching dummy machine. In fact, he practically does Practice ''Range'' Overkill with his side to side hops creating imprints of his feet on the cement floor and crashing into the roof for the high jump exam.
** Genos and Saitama are having a practice bout, with Genos demanding Saitama try harder. Saitama obligingly throws a haymaker that he stops at the last minute. Then Genos turns around to see that the air displaced by the punch has carved an entire canyon out of the cliff behind them.
* TheProphecy: Shibabawa's final one before her demise is "The Earth is in danger!!!", with Earth being ravaged by an above Dragon-Level threat and is apparently bound to happen in upcoming six months. Despite S-Class heroes taking it with the grain of salt, a Hero Association executive Sitch very much fears it, ''especially'' when HA's base gets attacked and A-City gets demolished by alien conquer Boros right after their meeting. However it's revealed Boros isn't the one Shibabawa's talked about, and the prophecy can still happen, after over the month of it's revelation. Sitch however seems to be the only one concerned about it.
* ProphecyTwist: Boros came to Earth because a seer told him the planet would have an opponent that would rekindle his love of battle. [[spoiler:[[ExactWords The seer never said he'd win]].]]
* PunchClockHero: Saitama mentions that he doesn't really believe his heroics will have much of an effect upon the world and he only does them because they bring him excitement. At least, they used to.
* PursueTheDreamJob: Saitama quit being a run-of-the-mill salaryman and trained for three years so he could take up superheroism as a hobby.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes Q-T]]
* RealPlaceBackground: Apparently, [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/opmpart1.png Saitama's]] [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/opmpart2.png apartment]] does exist somewhere within Saitama Prefecture. City Z is in fact based on locations within the Saitama Prefecture. [[ExaggeratedTrope Even the whole continent is the shape of Saitama Prefecture!]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Garou delivers these [[spoiler:to the S-Class heroes]] after curb-stomping them.
** Saitama delivers one to Garou in the webcomic, calling him out on being just a jaded cynic who wanted to be a hero but couldn't, so he instead chose to "lower the hurdle right before the goal" and become a monster. Saitama calls Garou out on this mindset, especially when Garou loses to him, ending with an ArmorPiercingQuestion: "What about next time? What will you do next?"
* RelaxOVision: Used in Chapter 15. After a particularly [[GroinAttack painful]] attack, the scene cuts to the words "Please wait a moment" over a picture of GhibliHills.
* RentAZilla: Gargantuan humans, bugs, and sea creatures. Monster King Orochi, [[spoiler:especially in his transformed state, where even the individual dragons he's made of are much larger than a full grown man. Keep in mind that he's made of presumably '''hundreds''' of these]].
* ReputationApathy: Saitama doesn't really care about his reputation at all, even when other heroes are trying to take credit for his accomplishments or mocking him to inflate their own reputations.
* RescueEquipmentAttack: Genos throws a fire extinguisher at the robot G4 during their fight, who shoots at it and thus gets covered in foam.
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Zombieman, whose power is that he can't die at all and will regenerate no matter how many wounds he gets.
* RidiculouslyAverageGuy: Were it not for Saitama's baldness, he'd have no distinguishing features whatsoever, but at the same time, his baldness makes him even more nondescript.
* RingRingCRUNCH: In the first episode, Saitama shuts off his alarm clock by casually slapping it with enough force to send it through his floor.
* RoboSpeak: Armoured Gorilla talks like this at first, but drops it after he's defeated and admits he was only trying to sound cool.
* RunningGag:
** People mistakenly thinking Saitama would desperately want his hair back or being generally tactless about the subject of his baldness.
** Genos [[AnArmAndALeg losing at least one limb]] in a fight.
** Kids calling Saitama (who's 25) "uncle", which he bitterly denies.
** Saitama and Sonic having a duel? It's somehow gonna end with Sonic getting humiliated.
* SamusIsAGirl: The cycloptic monster being forced to show Saitama and Flashy Flash around reveals their name to be Manako. When Saitama comments that's a girly name, Manako snarks back that she is a girl.
* SceneryCensor:
** Saitama ends up naked after Genos accidentally incinerates his clothes. Thankfully a little smoke and, after, a street sign cover his genitals.
** There are also some convenient clouds during Beefcake's stroll between cities.
* SceneryGorn: A good deal of artwork is spent showing how utterly ruined the surroundings are after any significant fight.
* SceneTransition: Several of the manga chapters are just one scene drawn out over a dozen or so pages, with scenes flowing into each other so fluidly that [[http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/03/06/chapter-of-one-punch-man-manga-turned-into-incredible-animated-gif you could make an animation out of them]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:
** After seeing Saitama's amazing performance in the Hero Association's physical exams, one of the other entrants flatly declares, "I'm going home."
** Sonic's reaction to Puri-Puri Prisoner's Angel Mode.
--->'''Sonic:''' "...He's naked. And he's definitely no angel. Nor is he human. Nor do I want to watch. ''I'm out.''"\
'''Puri-Puri Prisoner:''' "No one has ever seen my Angel Mode and lived to tell about it."\
'''Sonic:''' ''"All the more reason to leave."''
* SelfServingMemory: A variation —[[spoiler: Genos gains the memories of the alternate future of the Saitama vs. Garou fight where everyone dies, and not only completely absolves Saitama of blame and praises him for his apparent flawless heroism, he himself gives the credit of time travel that saved everyone to Saitama instead of Garou despite the events utterly contradicting these completely. Potentially justified, as Genos may have '' viewed'' the memories, but hasn't ''heard'' them.]]
* SerialEscalation: The webcomic to manga remake not only increased the level of detail to much greater heights with Murata's artwork, but it also has been increasing the scale of several key fights in the series, adding new ever bigger displays of power during said bouts.
** Boros in the webcomic didn't even do half of his moves against Saitama as portrayed in the manga. In the webcomic Boros' tremendous attack leveling a portion of his ship, scaling to the size of several city blocks, did not happen; the Meteoric Burst in the webcomic just resulted in Boros punching Saitama in way that finally moved him back a bit, not an insane volley of attacks that juggled Saitama all over the ship, and the insane high kick straight to the moon simply did not exist in the webcomic.
** Tatsumaki vs. [[spoiler:Psykos]] has been expanded to an even grander scale in the manga thanks to various original manga developments contributing to that end; the existence of Orochi as the new head figure of the Monster Association in the end amounted to it [[spoiler:fusing with Psykos, the sole leader in the webcomic, creating a creature with an extreme imposing level of power that has done things in the same, or greater, scale than Boros did, like emitting a beam that can slice continent sized chunks of the entire planet]]; in the webcomic Tatsumaki vs. [[spoiler:Psykos]] was just a fight between two espers in a much smaller scale.
** After the debut of [[spoiler:Psykorochi]] in the manga greatly upped the power scale of the Monster Association, truly looking like the most powerful foe around, the manga adjusted [[spoiler:Garou]] accordingly to still remain the biggest threat of the entire arc like he originally was in the Webcomic, his steps into [[spoiler:Awakening were revised with "God" being directly involved, amplifying Garou's powers to untold levels, to the point Awakened Garou vs. Saitama had to be moved away from Earth lest they destroy it as mere collateral damage from their fight]].
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: [[spoiler: With Genos and all the heroes sent on the Monster Association mission dead, the planet Jupiter and its moon Io completely obliterated, and Saitama still unbeatable, Garou is finally overcome with regret when he realises he accidentally caused the death of his MoralityPet Tareo. Rather than succumbing to despair, Garou reveals the existence of God to Saitama and tries to teach him a way to harness God's power. God, enraged, begins to kill Garou by transforming him into [[Literature/{{The Bible}} a pillar of salt]], but not before he is able to fling Saitama back in time, instructing him to use the strength accumulated over the course of their fight to defeat his past self in one punch. It works.]]
* ShaggyDogStory: The subterranean chapter, which has Saitama finally meet a WorthyOpponent in an epic battle. [[spoiler:[[AllJustADream Then he wakes up.]] While the subterraneans ''do'' exist, and he encounters them soon after, they're far less impressive than in his dream.]]
* ShoutOut:
** To the Shounen and Tokusatsu stories it mocks.
** Several to ''Literature/{{Anpanman}}'': in Japanese the titles are similar (''Onepanman/Wanpanman''), Saitama's costume is based on Anpanman's, and the name of the series' first villain, Vaccine Man, riffs on Baikinman ("Germ Man"), Anpanman's main villain. A 2019 anime special even has Keiko Toda, the narrator of the adaptation, do the narration for Saitama's adventures.
** Vaccine Man also looks a lot like [[Anime/DragonBallZ Piccolo]].
*** He's even voiced by [[Creator/ChristopherSabat Christopher Sabat]] in the English dub.
** Smile Man has a uncanny resemblance to ''Series/ElChapulinColorado'', of all things. He even has a hammer as a weapon and similar costume. His brothers, Angry Man and Crying Man, share this design.
** The cover page to Chapter 3 features a suspiciously Franchise/{{Godzilla}}-like kaiju.
** Genos has a backstory similar to ''Franchise/KamenRider'', especially those of the Showa Era. There's also the ''Licenseless Rider'', who rides a bicycle to battle. His hero name in Japanese, Mumen Rider, is another pun on Kamen Riders.
** The anime adds one: Carnage Kabuto's [[SuperMode Asura Mode]] transformation is colored purple with green lines, much like [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Eva-01]]. For bonus points, it's also an out-of-control berserker mode.
** One monster is a ginormous insect with a human face in the middle of its insect head, and one of the heroes who shows up to fight it is a scarred swordsman clothed all in black. Unlike [[Manga/{{Berserk}} Guts]], he gets his ass handed to him.
** Episode 5 has a nod to ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', with Saitama destroying the punching machine Ă  la Vegeta.
** In the anime rendition of Puri-Puri Prisoner's fight with Sea King, the sequence when initiating Angel Style bears a very strong resemblance to [[Anime/SailorMoon Sailor Moon]]'s TransformationSequence. Minus the part where a battle suit appears... but not minus the part where his original clothes disappear.
** The title pages of several manga chapters contain Shout Outs. Chapter 6's has "I'm gonna change" (Anime/CuteyHoney's CatchPhrase) while Chapter 13's has "Aku Soku Zan" ([[Manga/RurouniKenshin Hajime Saito]]'s motto).
** In Episode 9 of the anime, Genos [[https://gfycat.com/BleakCarefulCockroach enters his fight]] against the Deep Sea King in a way that looks suspiciously similar [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2_edited.jpg to Mega Man]].
** Episode 10 of the anime sees Tatsumaki fighting another suspiciously Godzilla-like kaiju.
** One of the crew of Boros's ship is a [[Film/District9 Prawn]].
** The entire sixth special (where the plot is about the ''murder'' of Zombieman) to ''Manga/CaseClosed'': Child Emperor acts like Conan Edogawa (well, both have the same seiyuu).
** During the Martial Arts Tournament arc, while Saitama is inspecting the contestant roster you may notice a contestant by the name of [[Series/CriminalMinds Rossie, who fights under the "psycho-analysis style"]].
** In Chapter 39, the part of the robot face seen underneath Genos' face-skin looks an awful lot like a ''Franchise/{{Terminator}}''.
** Boros's monster transformations in the Manga follow a similar trajectory to those of Frieza from ''Anime/DragonBallZ''. His initial form is small and slender, his second form is larger and more muscular while still retaining most of the physical features of his first, his third form is even larger and a lot more outwardly monstrous, and his final form [[spoiler:is quite similar to his first, while still being the most powerful.]]
** When Garou betrays [[spoiler:God by revealing his existence to Saitama, God punishes him by turning him into a pillar of salt, the same way the Biblical God punished Lot's wife in ''Literature/TheBible''.]]
* ShutUpHannibal:
** After landing a hit on Saitama, Boros takes a break to gloat about his superior regenerative power that should eventually grant him victory. Saitama interrupts him, clearly showing that he's neither fazed by the blow nor impressed by the talk.
** Again when Saitama fights [[BigBad Orochi]]. He starts to introduce himself as the all powerful pinnacle of monster evolution and Saitama tells him he's heard it countless times before.
* SidewaysSmile: Saitama [[http://imgur.com/a/liASc gets a great one]] after he trolls Geryuganshoop by asking for directions out of his ship.
-->'''Geryuganshoop''': Take a right, go up the stairs, and wait there for further instructions.\
'''Saitama''': [[ObfuscatingStupidity A... right?]]\
'''Geryuganshoop''': E-e-exactly, a right!\
''[beat]''\
'''Saitama''': ''[unsettling laugh]'' I guess I'll go left then!
* SixthRangerTraitor: A few of the S-Class heroes think there is a traitor amongst them. Child Emperor and one of the executives suspects Drive Knight because he disappeared during his recon of the Monster Association. It turns out that he was just being very thorough (as far as we know) and was maintaining total radio silence. To complicate things, he is adamant that Metal Knight, Child Emperor's mentor, is the traitor. Both of them have been acting in the interest of the Hero Association, but both are extremely pragmatic while being a little cold and heartless and both seem to have some ulterior motives. Therefore, it's hard to tell if either of them is the traitor. It could also be neither of them are, but the other S-Class heroes seem too self-centered and enjoy fighting monsters too much to be focused on being devious, calculated traitors... Except maybe Blast who's "retired" and has been missing for quite a while; [[spoiler:as it turns out, he's usually off doing something else, though it doesn't necessarily rule him out]].
* SlasherSmile: Sonic is often sporting one, which he refers to as a bad habit.
-->'''Saitama:''' ''[[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter You just want to try your techniques on me. I can tell by that child-like smile on your face.]]''
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVsCynicism: While the show's setting leans to the crapsack, its outlook leans more towards the idealistic end.
* SlidingScaleOfVillainThreat: Referenced in the show itself with disaster levels. ''Wolf'' level is only a potential threat. ''Tiger'' is Personal, ''Demon'' is City, ''Dragon'' is everything above City until Global, which is designated as ''God'' level. The series itself plays with this, though, as the first monster encountered in the manga, Vaccine Man, is a dragon level threat, the second highest. Another one of these doesn't appear until 10 chapters later.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Two members of a boy band manage to become C-Class heroes (they all took the test but only two passed) and think they have a chance against Amai Mask, who's not only an A-Class hero but stronger than some of the S-Class. Amai Mask paralyzes all seven of them with a single look for stomping on his BerserkButton and treating the title of "hero" as meaningless.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple:
** The Tank Topper Army has a single female, Tank Top Girl.
** Ring-Ring is the only female participant of the Tournament Arc.
* TheSocialDarwinist: The House Of Evolution was made to evolve humans beyond their current limits, since the genius creator found everyone he met to be inferior to him. He gives up when he meets Saitama, an ordinary man who surpassed his limits with sheer determination alone.
* SomethingPerson: Only for the ''title,'' not how he's referred to in-universe.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: Played with like most typical Shonen tropes. The [[MonsterOfTheWeek day to day monster and villain attacks]] vary greatly in threat level, but the monsters fought at the end of their respective sagas seem to legitimately increase in power as time goes by:
** The Subterranean King, failing to live up to the one in Saitama's [[DreamingOfThingsToCome dream]], comes across as rather weak and is unceremoniously dealt a OneHitKO (though, he's confirmed as a Demon level threat and is on the same level as Deep Sea King and Sky King).
** Carnage Kabuto gets a greater build up, being talked up as the House of Evolution's best fighter and defeating Genos without going OneWingedAngel, but is still killed with one punch.
** The Deep Sea King tears through several heroes, including S-Classes Puri-Puri-Prisoner and Genos, before being [[RuleOfThree killed with one punch]]. A subversion because Deep Sea King was far weaker than some of the earlier monsters, including the aforementioned Carnage Kabuto, being only as strong as Subterranean King. Deep Sea King was only pitted against the weaker heroes first (Puri-Puri-Prisoner and Genos is also among the weakest of S-Classes) before getting killed by Saitama.
** Boros is the first to [[spoiler:''survive'' one of Saitama's normal punches, and even his [[RapidFireFisticuffs Consecutive Normal Punches]]]], and is also the first opponent to get Saitama to use a [[LetsGetDangerous "Serious Series"]] attack. The next monster of course [[OverlyLongGag gets killed in a single punch]].
** Gouketsu, the last monster fought by Saitama at the end of the TournamentArc, [[spoiler: [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome gets defeated offscreen]], not leaving much room to compare him to previous villains. He probably subverts this though; considering how little time it took for him to be defeated, it's likely he only took one punch.]]
** Garou ends up being a DoubleSubversion. While he starts much weaker than Boros, getting knocked out on ''three separate occasions'' by nonchalant singular attacks, he [[TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential grows stronger after every fight]], [[spoiler: culminating in him becoming a [[OneWingedAngel "Perfect Monster"]] able to continue fighting even after taking a direct Serious Series attack]].
* SoundtrackDissonance: The ending song. It's a cheery romantic song in contrast to the heavy metal opening and rock soundtrack.
* SpitTake: In the first episode of season 2, as they are both playing a video game while sipping on orange juice, Saitama asks King out of the blue why he fled the rampaging robot that Genos is now fighting. King immediately spit-takes.
* SpotlightStealingSquad:
** Done deliberately in group artwork, where Saitama is often pushed to the side and cooler-looking characters like Genos are made the most immediately noticeable.
** A good example is the [[http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mduhwvx33J1r5g2zmo2_1280.jpg Volume 2 cover]], which consists of Genos looking good in the foreground and Saitama crammed into the corner, looking stupid.
** Invoked in-universe where people tend to attribute Saitama's victories to the other, more appealing, heroes around him, leading to situations like [[spoiler:King having all the fame Saitama should have]] while everyone thinks Saitama is a fraud.
* StatusQuoIsGod: Saitama is actually disappointed that his hair fell out. However, whenever Genos points out that Dr. Stench can easily replace it for him, he refuses... for some reason. It's never explained.
* StealthHiBye: In the Boros attack, it’s revealed by MrExposition that the building is made of the strongest stuff there is. The next time Genos turns to Saitama, Saitama has already left the building [[ThereWasADoor BY JUMPING THROUGH THE CEILING]] [[LeeroyJenkins to go fight the aliens.]] The anime adaptation shows that [[FridgeLogic this made no detectable sound.]]
* StoryBreakerPower: [[ComicallyInvincibleHero Saitama]]. If he were aware and present for a threat, he would swiftly obliterate it in one punch, quickly resolving the issue and depriving the other heroes of much to do. The story will usually have him off doing something that will keep him distracted or other characters will intentionally keep him uninformed until they've had a chance to fight. For example, the monster attacks in the Super Fight Arc wouldn't have been nearly as bad if Saitama hadn't been off participating in the tournament and left completely in the dark about it till later. This is usually justified by most characters not aware of just how powerful he is (particularly the Hero Association), aware how grave the threat is, or Saitama himself being easily distracted, absent-minded, and [[NoSenseOfDirection prone to getting lost]].
* StrongAndSkilled: Garou has an incredible amount of power and speed, but supplements his raw power with the ability to analyze his opponent's fighting style through observation and develop a counter style that negates all of his opponent's attacks.
* StylisticSuck: The crude art of the original webcomic is deliberate. ONE can draw very well when he wants to.
** In both the webcomic and the manga, Saitama in particular is generally drawn in a much more simplistic, lower-quality style than everyone else to reflect his [[KnightInSourArmor utter disenchantment and laziness]].
** Tatsumaki is no slouch in this department either, regularly being drawn in a manner befitting her BrattyHalfPint personality.
* SuperRegistrationAct: Subverted. Supers are not ''required'' to register in the National Superhero Registry, but unregistered heroes are not taken seriously by the general public. Only registered members receive fame and fortune for what they do; those that don't sign up are pretty much just costumed lunatics in the public eye. Saitama starts as a "hero for fun" who was blissfully unaware that registration was even a thing (somehow) and does not start receiving any form of public recognition for his acts of heroism until well after he has already prevented several potentially city-destroying incidents.
* SuperheroPrevalenceStages: The prologue of the story starts in the Early stages of superheroes, when there's not that many and they're disorganized. The leap forward into the actual story shows a world in the Late stage where there's hundreds of superheroes, a governing body controlling them, and villains whose sole goals are to challenge the heroes' authority.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Darkness Blade's ImpossiblyCoolClothes are at times a hindrance; due to his SpikesOfVillainy, he accidentally stabbed himself in the face when raising his arm too high.
* TakingYouWithMe: Subverted. Genos primes his self destruct as Mosquito Girl is about to kill him, hoping to take her out in the blast. Saitama splatters her across the wall right before Genos blows up, removing the need.
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: Frequently defied and deconstructed, as Saitama doesn't like overly long speeches. Whenever someone tries to pull this off, Saitama tends to put a stop to it either verbally or physically. This is a non-subtle 'jab' at mangas/animes that love padding.
* TestYourStrengthGame: One of the gags during the hero exams involves a punching a machine to test strength. Saitama doesn't hold back and sends it crashing into a wall.
* TeachMeHowToFight: The already ridiculously strong cyborg Genos starts following Saitama around, calling him 'sensei', and asking to become stronger. When Saitama tells him how he achieved his current strength, however, Genos is kinda disappointed, but he nonetheless remains a loyal disciple and tries to wring as much martial wisdom out of Saitama's laid-back nature as he can.
** Suiryu also asks to become Saitama's student after seeing him beat Gouketsu. He was rejected.
** Flashy Flash tries to forcibly assume the role of Saitama's teacher under the assumption that Saitama wants ''him'' to teach him how to fight, and is just too proud to admit it. After Saitama effortlessly avoids his attacks and nearly kills him with a single punch, Flash quietly drops the issue.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: The anime has an uplifting battle theme that is played not just for the heroes, but also for some villains' hopeless but determined struggles against Saitama. Licenseless Rider gets a solemn DarkReprise of this theme when he challenges the Sea King.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Just one punch leads to death and dismemberment, which is often accompanied by a look of mind-numbing boredom from Saitama.
* ThousandYardStare: Good ''God'', '''Saitama''', after seeing [[spoiler:Genos's decimated corpse after Garou murdered him to force Saitama at full power. Combined with the black rain of nuclear fallout, Saitama is one of the most terrifying examples od this trope, black liquid trickling down his face that is somehow simultaneously filled with overwhelming despair, rage, regret and impenetrable blankness]].
* ThouShaltNotKill: [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman While the heroes have no problem with killing monsters]], the human criminals are usually captured and transported to prisons. This is however played with the [[HeroKiller Hero Hunter Garou]], when basically anyone who meets him questions [[AmbiguouslyHuman is he even human or an actual monster]] Garou claims to be. While some heroes like Tank-Top Master, Watchdog Man, Superalloy Darkshine or Garou's former sensei, Silver Fang don't want to kill him, [[GoodIsNotSoft the other ones]] like Atomic Samurai, Death Gatling, Genos or Amai Mask have no problems with doing just that. [[spoiler:Even in the manga Saitama seeing Genos's corpse uses many times his Serious Punches against Monster Garou to kill him - [[SubvertedTrope however it's eventually subverted]] once Saitama mentions that in respect for Tareo's wish he wouldn't kill his "uncle". When the fight between the two is over, Garou's completely lost his will to live, making the other remaining heroes on the battlefield begging Saitama to finally get rid of him for good (in the webcomic) and wondering what to do with him after all what's happened (in the manga. However, Tareo shows up begging other heroes to not kill his "uncle". Kid's act is what regains Garou's will to live, making him escape quickly from the scene.]]
* TokenHeroicOrc: Manako, a particularly cowardly and weak member of the Monster Association, strikes up an unlikely friendship with Flashy FLash and Saitama, and eventually agrees to provide information about the Monsters' God to the Hero Association.
* TooDumbToLive:
** An A-Class Hero Sneck hears that the new C-Class hero he had been berating was only C-Class due to an appalling written test score and that he had gotten a perfect score in the physical exam by a ludicrous margin. Sneck decides to "Rookie Crush" this newbie to keep him from getting cocky. Saitama promptly destroys him, crashing into the ground headfirst. He's not the only one dumb enough to try such half-baked stupidity where the jerks in question realized too late [[DoNotTauntCthulhu that was a really, really, ''really'' dumb idea]]. After that, Sneck's arrogance takes a dive.
** From the Monster Association, Phoenix Man, but rather the character, Birdbrain, that his phoenix costume is based on. [[TheyKilledKennyAgain Birdbrain kept dying every episode because of his stupidity but always came back the next episode to die again]].
** The other MA member, an Dragon-Level cadre Gums. [[spoiler:Dissecting one of the cadres, Fuhrer Ugly, without even trying to spit him out is what brings to his demise in the manga.]]
** And also pretty much any monster who happens to encounter Saitama.
* TrainingFromHell:
** Parodied. [[spoiler:Saitama does 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and 10 kilometers of running ''every single day with no breaks''.]] Said training was what caused him to go completely bald. [[note]]This doesn't even ''begin'' to approach the level special forces soldiers or professional athletes train at.[[/note]]
** Other heroes play this straighter such as Darkshine who got his current strength and durability from constant weightlifting, Tanktop Master who also does physical training to unlock more of his tanktop's powers and Glasses who diligently trains just like Saitama to become stronger.
* TournamentArc: "Super Fight Arc" where Saitama joins a martial arts tournament [[PaperThinDisguise disguised as Charanko using a wig]], hoping to learn some fighting techniques being intrigued by the Hero Hunter's actions. Said arc is a manga and anime original part of the story and it happens concurrently with Monster Raid arc.
* ATwinkleInTheSky: Mosquito Girl is slapped aside by Saitama and [[spoiler: apparently]] dies from it, most likely because she was knocked through at least one building in the process.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes U-Z]]
* UnConfession: Played with. It first seemed that [[spoiler:King's confession that he's just a normal human]] might get drowned out by the sound of the crow monster's deafening cries, [[spoiler:but Saitama actually heard everything.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Any time Saitama gets in a fight, he's dismissed as a weakling, either due to his rank or his unassuming appearance. Most don't live to regret that, and the few that do know not to mess with him from then on (except "Speed-o-Sound" Sonic, who just won't let it go).
* UngratefulBastard:
** Despite Saitama's heroic efforts of destroying the gigantic meteor and dividing it into smaller pieces just so the city would not be destroyed, a lot of the Z-City citizens are pissed, at first because they think he was just taking credit from the S-Class heroes who couldn't destroy it, and then when it's established that he ''did'' destroy the meteor, they're mad because of the damage its debris caused. However, he does counter with his very own awesome TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.
** Played straight when he defeats the [[spoiler:Sea King]]. One prick in the crowd of people he saved claims that since he defeated the monster so easily, it couldn't have been that strong and the heroes who failed to beat it were just weak. Saitama turns this around by claiming the other heroes had weakened the monster enough for him to kill it and he could steal all the credit for finishing it off. This causes everyone to think he was faking again and the other heroes would get the credit.
* UnlikelyHero: Though the decision to become a hero was Saitama's own, his main motivation seems to be boredom and he often gets frustrated by the ridiculous situations he finds himself in. Consider how most heroes start their stories. Most of them were for revenge or to get acceptance.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight:
** Saitama wears a bright jumpsuit and a cape while Genos is a cyborg with black sclerae and robotic arms, yet no one bats an eye at them. In fact, Genos can mingle with a crowd without being found out. Justified, as the Hero Association exists and there are costumes wearing heroes, people are used to seeing this kind of thing.
** Deconstructed with Saitama. He barely even acknowledges a monster before or after he kills it and, most of the time, even forgets about it completely. Because of this, he doesn't report in his heroism to the Hero Association, leading to one of the main reasons he is still at such a low rank.
* UnwittingPawn: During the Hero Hunter arc, the eponymous Hero Hunter Garou meets a kid named Tareo who loves heroes. Garou pretends to be a fellow fan to get information on where he can find certain heroes.
* VaguenessIsComing: "The Earth is in trouble!!!", According to a fortune teller with a 100% track record for accuracy, '''the Earth is in trouble!!!'''. Essentially, the greatest disaster of the age is due to strike before the year is out. However, since Shibabawa died before she could elaborate on said "trouble", nobody actually knows what it is or when exactly it'll happen.
* VictoryIsBoring:
** Saitama is so strong that nothing can challenge him, and his victories are meaningless. He has trouble motivating himself when threats appear, although he'll step up to stop the earth from being destroyed, or if he witnesses innocents about to be slaughtered.
** Boros sought out Saitama because he was bored of having nothing that could put up a fight against him. Saitama hands him defeat, and he dies satisfied.
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler: Garou has one of these after being defeated by Saitama both physically and emotionally.]]
* VillainousValour: Despite being the main villain of the Human Monster Saga, it's very easy to find yourself cheering Garou on due to just how much of an underdog he is. Good examples of this include his unfair eight-on-one fight against Death Gatling's band of heroes, and his two-on-one brawl with Royal Ripper and Bug God.
* VocalEvolution: At first, Zach Aguilar's performance as Genos in the English dub was quite stuffy-sounding and a bit too militant (which most fans tended to dislike). Since the second season he has developed a much more natural delivery for the character.
* WallOfText:
** Genos' backstory is delivered this way as a joke. Ever wonder what an origin story sounds like without a flashback? Now you know.
--> '''Saitama:''' YOU IDIOT!!! TELL IT AGAIN IN 20 WORDS OR LESS!!!
** We get another one explaining the National Superhero Registry, presumably also provided by Genos for Saitama's benefit.
** Genos delivers another one at the end of the manga's Monster Association arc, hypothesizing how [[spoiler:Saitama found himself holding Genos's dead core despite Genos being alive and well]]. [[VisualPun It goes in Saitama's ear and out the other.]]
* WarMemorial: A giant monument with the names of the victims [[spoiler:from the alien attack on City A]] is shown right as the credits roll for the final episode of the first season.
* WhamEpisode:
** In Chapter 107 of the webcomic, on the downside, [[spoiler:after the Garou incident, the Hero Association has lost faith from the public, Saitama unintentionally damaged the reputation of Metal Knight (by destroying his defenses he built for the Hero Association) and Tatsumaki (his fight with her did serious damage to the cities they fought in causing complaints about her), so now the Hero Association will increase their surveillance on them, several heroes are retiring, including Bang, and Child Emperor gained a distrust for the adults in the Hero Association]]. On the upside, [[spoiler:Fubuki finally decides to move up to A-Class and Zombieman wants Dr. Genus' help to remove his limiter]].
** Chapter 166 of the Manga has [[spoiler: Garou killing Genos by punching him straight through the chest, and Saitama reacting with genuine anger for the first time ever.]]
* WhamShot:
** Episode 11 of the anime, when it's shown that [[spoiler: Boros ''didn't'' die after one punch from Saitama]]. [[JawDrop A lot of jaws hit the floor at that point]], at least among people who hadn't read the webcomic or the manga version yet.
** In Chapter 153 of the Manga, Zombieman has apprehended Homeless Emperor and begins to interrogate him about how he obtained his powers. Homeless Emperor begins to explain, but is suddenly seized with terror, his gaze fixed upon the moon. [[spoiler: A colossal white hand reaches out across the surface of the moon, and a gigantic, faceless entity steps out from the blackness of space. The Homeless Emperor then has a vision of himself standing naked in front of the giant in a field of flowers before dying in a panic.]]
** Some of Blast's allies are shown in the original draw of Chapter 164 and are revealed instead in Chapter 167. [[spoiler:One of them appears to be ''Boros'' or an alternate universe version of him or simply another member of his race. It would be fitting as he would be referred to as "a member of Boros's race" in a similar fashion as he's a partial reference to Frieza from Anime/DragonBallZ. People like Frieza are also referred to as "a member of Frieza's race" by fans.]]
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Saitama never hesitates to kill monsters, even one that was running away, regardless of intelligence, yet he lets human criminals live, including a guy who killed a whole building full of people for no reason. This later becomes a major element of the Garou plot arc, as he's a human who thinks it's unfair that [[TheGoodGuysAlwaysWin the heroes always win and the monsters always lose]]. [[spoiler:He ends up following the trope to a T anyway, which is why both the monsters and Saitama refuse to consider him an actual monster.]]
** It should be noted that one major element of the series is that many monsters [[WasOnceAMan start human and then become monsters usually due to some sort of obsession]]. The idea seems to be that these kinds of monsters are AlwaysChaoticEvil but if the monstrous form can be shed, such as with [[spoiler:Psykos]] or [[spoiler:Garou]], then they were just "playing monster" and can be redeemed.
** It should also be noted that Saitama doesn't kill anything that hasn't seemed to kill anyone or if they are like him in a way that he deems them redeemable. For example, he let the kelp monster escape perhaps because he didn't actually kill the two A-Class heroes that he fought and was simply looking for a good fight. He also didn't kill Hammerhead despite him having his men punch down a skyscraper [[note]]tellingly, that incident was played for laughs when they figured out that they had targeted the wrong building[[/note]], but he may not have known about that. We do know that Saitama spared him because he saw Hammerhead as the type of person he could have been if he took the wrong path. He was also going to let the Beast King and his buddies live if they apologized, but the Beast King murdered two of his allies and the Demon Mole retreated without saying sorry so he took both of them down. He ended up sparing their ally, the cyborg gorilla, because he apologized and answered his questions.
** Additionally, we also do not know exactly what happened with Ground Dragon (the monster that was running away) once Saitama caught him. It is also implied (in one of the specials) that Saitama is not particularly good at incapacitating things without killing them (in that same special, he let a monster "spit out" his teammates before attacking him), and this would be especially difficult with monsters because he does not know how much force he needs to use to damage them. The humans that he fights are mostly people who are attacking him specifically because they are jerks or bullies, or want a fight (e.g. members of the Heroes' Association, Sonic) whereas the monsters he kills are deliberately trying to indiscriminately murder civilians.
** Played for drama with Handsome Kamen Amai Mask, who feels no remorse for anything that either resembles a monster or identifies as a monster, ruthlessly executing unarmed aliens and a [[FishOutOfTemporalWater rampaging caveman]] the association wanted him to bring back alive, as well as demanding that Garou not be left alive even after he'd reverted to human, claiming them all to be "evil" and describing his own actions as "justice" because of this. [[spoiler: And then it's recently been shown that Handsome Mask is perfectly fine with killing brainwashed humans that he knows are brainwashed, too, showing that Handsome Mask won't hold anyone up as a measure if they get in his way.]]
*** Later on, the webcomic [[spoiler:reveals that Amai Mask himself is a monster which was part of the reason he became such a SociopathicHero. Ironically this trope now applies to Amai Mask himself once he reveals his identity as a monster to kill a mass murdering monster who was growing in strength. With his identity revealed, he lost all rights as a human and other heroes are allowed to hunt him down and kill him. This, however, is subverted by Saitama who does not see him as a monster, but rather as someone currently finding his own way of becoming his IdealHero and helps him escape to accomplish that]].
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Most of the S-Class heroes are only really good at cutting/bludgeoning/punching stuff, so even when some of them encounter a BlobMonster, [[NoSell they're stuck futilely doing their thing]] because the literally only other option would be to stop fighting it. [[spoiler:At least until Metal Bat discovers its weak point, allowing them to eventually harm it in a meaningful way]]. Saitama also falls into this category, of course, though the fact his metaphorical hammer would make the [[Anime/GaoGaiGar Goldion Crusher]] look like a rubber mallet tends to make up for it.
* WholeEpisodeFlashback: Several of these in the manga, exploring Saitama's life before the story began.
* WorfBarrage:
** Several heroes do this against the current MonsterOfTheWeek, only for it to either do no damage, or the bad guy has a HealingFactor which negates everything they just dished out.
** The bad guys are also subjected to this when fighting Saitama, only for their own attacks to barely do anything to him. For example, attacks from the Sea King that seriously injured several heroes earlier barely move his head.
** Hilariously parodied when Saitama is unable to kill a single mosquito despite slapping and hitting it several times. He then manages to kill their queen with a simple slap when she is about to finish Genos.
* TheWorfEffect:
** Virtually every hero and villain gets Worfed. A is beat by B, who is beat by C, etc etc in a continually escalating battle of badassitude, and whoever is the mightiest gets to be one-punched.
** Genos, despite being considered very powerful by a lot of characters, tends to be defeated quite easily by named villains. While normally this would serve the purpose of demonstrating how strong said villain is, and thus a potential worthy opponent for TheHero, Saitama knows better.
** The Sky King attacks the Heroes' Association headquarters, referencing the Underground King (18 pages) and the Sea King (200 pages), implying that this is the beginning of an arc. Total time until he's Worfed? 7 pages.
* WorldOfBadass: Superheroes are incredibly common here, so much so that no one acts surprised when insanely strong guys in silly costumes turn up day after day to battle the forces of evil. However, while there are a lot of 'heroes' in this country, most of them are not at 'heroic' level. C- to B-Class heroes handle threats that most soldiers/policemen can handle. Most of the threats that currently come into the world are usually impossible to handle unless it's by an A- or S-Class hero and even they are sometimes not enough.
* WorldOfJerkass: To a T. Aside from some civilians being [[UngratefulBastard Ungrateful Bastards]], there are only a few legitimate heroes that you can count on your hands. Most of the others are egotistical jerks who are slaves to their public image, along with one top-ranked hero being willing to kill any monster even if they surrender, and the second strongest hero being a BrattyHalfPint who uses her PsychicPowers to bully and intimidate anyone she views as weak and/or annoying. And even Saitama, who is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, has a constant "meh" attitude that irritates people InUniverse to high heaven. ZigzaggedTrope however - despite their harsh attitude and rude behaviour, many of the heroes are still [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold good people]] [[HumansAreFlawed deep down]], that put their lives on the line to protect the innocent, sometimes experiencing [[BreakTheHaughty tough lessons]] [[JerkassRealization in life]].
* YouKilledMyFather: Genos is looking for the cyborg who killed his family and damaged him enough so that [[WeCanRebuildHim he became a cyborg himself to survive]].
* ZeroApprovalGambit:
** Saitama invokes this by claiming that the only reason he defeated [[spoiler:The Sea King was because all the other heroes risked their lives to weaken it and that being the one to deliver the CoupDeGrace would ensure that he got all the credit.]]
** This also turns out to be the intention of [[spoiler:Garou. He plans to become the greatest monster the world had ever known so he would [[GenghisGambit put an end to all conflict by being a common threat to the entire world.]] That's what he claims, anyway. His discussion with Saitama implies his real motivation was to force a real hero to emerge to stop him.]]
