->''"Johnny Wander might be about life after college, being a kid, growing up and all the people you meet and all the things that happen in that brave new world.''\
\
''Or it might be about something else entirely."''

''[[http://www.johnnywander.com/ Johnny Wander]]'' is a SliceOfLife webcomic by Yuko Ota and [[Webcomic/{{Applegeeks}} Ananth Hirsh]]. The comic mostly follows the everyday lives of Yuko and company after graduating college, but since September of 2009, they have started putting up short comics with an UrbanFantasy theme on occasion.

The main cast includes:

'''Ananth''', a self-proclaimed comics nerd, whose hat always covers his eyes. Even when he's not wearing it.\
'''Yuko''', a small girl who is often mistaken for a boy, and is "internet famous"[[note]]sorta[[/note]]. Can also fit inside a dryer.\
'''Conrad''', an exhibitionist who likes to eat breakfast 24/7. Also has a very suspicious hairdo.\
'''John''', a mildly ornery tallish fellow who likes to clean.\
'''Steve''', a DJ who's skillful with bass.\
'''Mike''', a musician who can be stopped with shellfish and/or bullets.\
'''Rook:''' Yuko's (very talkative) cat. Meow meow meow meow meow meow. Not a real cat.\
'''Gonta:''' Yuko's dad's cat. Likes to fret.\
'''Mika:''' Yuko's mom's cat.\
'''George:''' smiles ''all the time''.\
'''Lela:''' who likes dogs and cooking.\
'''Cricket:''' the laundry kitten. Chirrup.

!!The main comic contains examples of:

%%* AltText
%%* BeautifulAllAlong: Yuko, [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/very-important-questions-1 when she takes off her glasses]]. Also, if you've ever seen an actual photo of her, she's absolutely adorable.
%%* {{Bifauxnen}}: Yuko. She's since grown out her hair and the comics as of late 2015 reflect that.
* TheBigGuy: The only person John might not be taller than is [[Webcomic/QuestionableContent Jeph]] and that's only because they haven't appeared in the same comic together.
%%* BishieSparkle: Yuko without her glasses, [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/very-important-questions-1 in this one]]
%%* BlatantLies: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/143 "It's been a busy week"]]. Although they actually ''were'' swamped that week.
%%* BrickJoke: The [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/14 coffee]] [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/156 table]].
%%** [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/233 Do not]] [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/244 put butter in there]]. (Alt text.)
%%* CantHoldHisLiquor: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/268 Yuko]], thanks to Asian alcohol intolerance.
* CharacterTitle: Possibly, but most probably not. There ''is'' a character named John, although no one ever calls him Johnny, and there's no obvious reason for the comic to be named after him.
* CheshireCatGrin: George as his default expression. Apparently, if he stops smiling, [[spoiler:[[ApocalypseWow the world explodes]]]].
* CloudcuckooLander: John says the darnest of things.
-->alt-text: how do you come up with these things, man
* TheComicallySerious: Being mildly ornery only serves to make John ''even funnier''.
%%* CuteButCacophonic: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/153 Rook the cat]].
%%* CuteKitten: Cricket. [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/295 "omigosh."]]
%%* DeathGlare: John [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/160 tries this]].
%%* DistantReactionShot: The [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/62 garlic incident]].
%%** And [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/176 the grill]].
%%*** Note that they both involve [[LethalChef the same guy]]...
%%*** As the alt-text says, "John's element is fire."
* ADogNamedCat: The cats named Rook and Cricket.
* DoubleEntendre:
** Seen [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/204-0 here]], during a road trip.
---> '''Yuko:''' You're going to stay on this road for about 20 miles.\
'''George:''' What do I get off on? \
'''John:''' That's none of our business, George!
** Ananth's notes on the comic start with, "The exit was for the Innuendo Parkway, on which we stayed till the end of our trip."
%%* DressesTheSame: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/parallel-fashion Yuko and Ananth]] did this once. And then [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/parallel-fashion-2 inverted it]].
%%* DueToTheDead: [[NoLongerWithUs Parodied]]-- he was only [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/128 moving to Portland]].
* EpicFail:
** [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/50 Trying to dry peppers]] and [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/62 roast garlic]] in the toaster oven is a mistake.
** And Conrad [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/3 posing for his graduation photo]] with his degree held upside down. It's now set to become [[http://www.johnnywander.com/blog/2010/06/22/little-bit-everything a family tradition]].
* ExpressiveMask: The characters with glasses and HiddenEyes usually get this as a substitute.
* ExpressiveShirt: The logos on the characters' computers often change to reflect [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/79 how they feel]], or [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/49 that the computer just died]]. Also the Apple logo tends to get replaced with other foods.
%%* ExtremeOmnivore: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/162 Rook the cat]].
* EyeBeams: ComicBook/{{Cyclops}}-style PowerIncontinence [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/305 seems to be the reason Ananth wears that hat.]]
%%* FiveTokenBand: Parodied in [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/96 this]] strip.
%%* FlatWhat: Ananth in [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/35 this]] strip, as well as Yuko in [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/91 this one.]]
* FrameBreak: In "The Surest Path to Friendship", Cricket and Rook both rub against the panel lines (with Rook's ears actually going past the panel).
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Yuko likes all kinds of critters, including bugs. Although not enough that she won't get mad at her parents' cats when they [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/27 barf on her floor]], or [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/196 freak out about finding a dead mouse]]. And, [[RuleOfThree of course:]]
-->'''Yuko:''' There are squirrels. '''[[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/18 IN THE WALLS.]]'''
* GenreShift: Began as mostly semi-autobiographical [[GagPerDayWebcomics gag-per-day]] strips sometimes interspersed with fictional short stories, but around 2012 the latter gradually overtook the former almost completely.
* GladiatorGames: John's opinion about the Super Bowl in [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/37 this]] strip
* HiddenEyes:
** Ananth's hat permanently hides his eyes. Including when he's in bed. Although [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/135 the hat's shadow remains after he takes off the hat]]... and to keep up the joke, his eyes are always blacked out in photographs.
** Also Yuko and George, whose glasses are ScaryShinyGlasses.... or just thick.
%%* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Ananth and Yuko.
%%** Even more so, [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/i39ll-form-the-legs Yuko and]] [[Webcomic/QuestionableContent Jeph Jacques]], who apparently really is that tall in real life.
%%** For that matter, Yuko and John.
%%** And with the cats, [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/394 Rook and Cricket]].
%%* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/221 He is a warrior. He seeks the Quickening.]] Right after some fancy cakes.
%%** With the right clothes, you can make any journey epic.
%%* IWantGrandkids: Yuko's mom.
%%* JournalComic: Most of the time.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Yuko is frequently mistaken for a boy (in-universe). This happens to be TruthInTelevision.
%%* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/243 Subverted, obviously, since they made a comic about it]].
* LifeEmbellished: The autobio comics mostly stick true to life, but then there's little divergences like [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/at-least-it-wasn39t-your-head Yuko losing her arm in a subway door]] [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comic/well-maybe-your-head-would39ve-been-better and having it picked up by a small creature.]]
* LoonyFan: Not very extreme, but ever since [[Webcomic/RiceBoy Evan]] moved in, Yuko likes to [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/198 know what he's dooin']].
%%* MadeOfPlasticine: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/97 Beware the NYC subway doors.]]
%%* MundaneMadeAwesome: The [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/133 "Ultimate Clementine Peeling Technique"]], among others.
%%* NeatFreak: John, who is sometimes TheComicallySerious... and [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/306 sometimes]], NotSoAboveItAll.
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: John says some creepy things sometimes.
--> [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/273 "The call is coming from inside the houussee."]]
* NoHuggingNoKissing: There are almost no implications in the comic that Ananth and Yuko are an item. He ''does'' [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/43 wear her socks though...]][[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/330 A later comic]] parodying the touch of King Midas shows Yuko as a princess and ends with Ananth wearing a crown, kneeling before her, and [[IKissYourHand kissing her hand]]. The AltText also says "And they lived happily ever after".
%%* NoMouth: Evan, but he has a mustache.
* NoSell:
** [[https://johnnywander.com/comic/water-cat The spray bottle does not work on Cricket]].
** Neither does the [[https://johnnywander.com/comic/shirt-cat Punishment Shirt]], though John's method [[https://johnnywander.com/comic/punishment-shirt proves to be more effective]].
%%* NoodleIncident: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/112 Literally]].
%%* OlderThanTheyLook: Yuko is often mistaken for someone around the age of 14.
* OutOfFocus: When the characters of your comics are friends and roommates, they tend to come and go whenever they move away.
* OrwellianRetcon: After the revelation that Conrad's hair is a small furry animal, they went back and drew eyes on it in every single comic.
%%* PermaStubble: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/302 Ananth's superpower.]]
* PerpetualSmiler: George grins constantly. If he is ever not baring his teeth, [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/136 the world explodes]]. Although he did [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/128 grimace]] once.
%%* TheQuietOne: Evan, who is kinda skittish. [[KindheartedCatLover He also likes Rook a lot]].
* RealMenWearPink: Ananth enjoys froofy starbucks drinks and wearing Yuko's girly socks to stay warm.
%%* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Rook and Cricket.
* ShonenHair: Conrad has hair enough like this for someone to ask about it in the Q&A comics. Apparently it's a small furry creature that lives on his head. It looks kinda like a hedgehog...
%%* ShoppingMontage: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/139 At Ikea, no less]]
* SlasherSmile: [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/6 "the secret punchline is the unwaveringly sinister grin of george rohac"]]
* SockItToThem: Used in an ImagineSpot, as the characters discuss what to do with $50 worth of small change.
* SpecialGuest: Occasionally the gang hangs out with some other relatively popular online figures, such as Creator/NeilCicierega or [[Webcomic/{{Gunshow}} KC Green]].
* {{Squee}}: Yuko in panel three [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/170 here]] when meeting an especially lovable owl.
** Yuko will occasionally use "omigosh" in lieu of squee, such as when meeting Cricket. Or thinking about coffee tables.
* StraightGay: A sort of WordOfGod. John's "John Advice" column on Formspring reveals that he's gay, but you wouldn't know it from the comic (except perhaps from his obsession with cleaning and his delight at the acquisition of a new coffee table). Who'da thunk it.

!!The short story comics provide examples of:

* BadassInANiceSuit: Death tends to dress immaculately.
%%* BellyMouth: Maws.
%%* BishieSparkle: Pony of the Pony Cop duo.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Eating feathers makes you develop these. On Callie it's a full-blown case of LooksLikeCesare.
* DisabilityImmunity: Delilah is immune to her pet's [[IncrediblyLamePun petrifying]] gaze, because she's blind.
* DontFearTheReaper: Death, who is actually a bit bumbling and awkward (but very sweet and an utter gentleman).
* KissOfDeath: Cecilia receives a very localised form of the latter when [[spoiler:Death]] kisses her hand at the end of her date and leaves it skeletal to his horror.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: It's easy to miss, but Cecilia's date with [[spoiler:Death]] happened in the 1920s. She stayed the same physical age for around eighty years because he was avoiding her.
%%* ShrinkingViolet: Cecilia's date, [[spoiler: Death]].
%%* TakenForGranite
%%* TransformationTrauma: The end of Callie Eats Feathers.
* YourTomcatIsPregnant: Penny has it [[http://www.johnnywander.com/comics/511 explained to her]] that her cat "Boyfriend" is more likely a "Girlfriend" since it's a calico via WallOfText.

!!Barbarous provides examples of:
* CoatCape: The academy aged fraction of Percy's mind wears an oversized jacket draped over her shoulders.
* ConspicuousGloves: Cecilia wears her gloves when first meeting Cee, to hide her skeletal hand.
* DoingInTheWizard: While magic is well established, Percy is outright offended when Cerberus claims the apartment she's cleaning up for the new tenants is haunted by the ghosts of a little old couple, since such supernatural sightings are obviously a matter of the planes being misaligned. Then, when she's about to do a simple realignment, the ghosts of a little old couple who had died in the apartment show up to ask her what she's doing, talk about all the travel they've been up to since death, and then scamper off laughing as Death himself shows up trying to look imposing to chastise them. Death then asks Percy for fashion advice and tells her not to tell Cee that he showed up looking horrifying before flusteredly leaving.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Percy wakes up from a dream on the subway where someone is telling her she never belonged, has what is quite obviously all of her belongings with her in bags and leaps up to chase a thief who took someone else's bag only to botch the magic when trying to get the bag back damaging the bag and burning her own hands. She's quite obviously intense, emotional and desperate, all things which pique Cecilia's interest later on.
* ExtremeDoormat: Cecilia unabashedly hired Percy largely because she's so confrontational that she manages to get Leeds to talk back, yell and argue with her instead of just bowing to her wishes like he does with everyone else.
* {{Facepalm}}: After having thoroughly pissed off Leeds the night before, Percy tries to build a rapport with him the next morning. Her attempts at small talk leads to her telling him "Yeah, you're like '''all''' shoulders," at which point she stops following him for a second to smack a palm against her face.
* {{Familiar}}: Only the Pillars are allowed to have familiars, and while there are rules against making them sentient as it would be unethical, Leeds' reaction to the very mention of the Pillars implies they'd murder or use--enslave--any such familiar reported to them.
* TheMagocracy: The Pillars are not only powerful dangerous magic users, they're also the law enforcers and seem to have judicial and legislative powers as well.
* MeaningfulEcho: When Percy has not yet accepted Cecilia's offer and is furious at her magic having gone bad she tells Leeds "I'm not good at happy mediums. I'm a hundred percent. Or nothing." Leeds responds with a mild "Well...nobody's nothing". Later, when trapped in a mess of the fractured psyche of herself and Leeds, she has a near identical conversation with a piece of her own mind that reflects her time right after being turned down by the Pillars, and realizes her own growth as she says it.
* UnsoundEffect: After Percy tries using her magic, which she ''knows'' has gone bad, to hurry along the tile job, the text over her and Leeds' heads as they stare wide eyed at the result is A BAD JOB.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Most people assume Leeds is just a person wearing a fancy glamour, but he is in fact a familiar, a life-form not meant to be anything other than a mindless slave. He was, however, illegally created with free will and personality, things which the public is not meant to think familiars can have.
