''Smash Bros. Lawl'' is a series on Website/YouTube by {{Creator/Chincherrinas}}, also the creator of ''WebAnimation/TheFrolloShow''. It consists of a plethora of icons, mostly from [[TheInternet Internet Pop Culture]], getting put together in a ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros''-like universe. The series is usually shown through Moveset Videos, showing how a specific character's attributes could transfer over into a Smash Bros. moveset, though it also features other kinds of content from time-to-time, such as a character going through Classic Mode, a "playthrough" of a ''[[VideoGame/TheSubspaceEmissary Subspace Emissary]]''-esque adventure mode, or ''"It's a Fact!"'' videos about other various features.

!!Tropes

[[folder: General]]
* AllMenArePerverts: Attacks that utilize "[[DistractedByTheSexy horniness stun]]" almost exclusively effects male fighters.
-->'''J. Jonah Jameson:''' Hah! I like your style! Rest assured, she has transferred my repulsion gel into outer space!
* AllThereInTheManual: Extra information, such as characters stats, bios and matchups, among other things, can be found on the series' [[https://www.facebook.com/SmashBrosLawl/ Facebook page.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: The horniness status effect can be used by both female characters (Panty, Haruhi with Mikuru...) and at least a male character (Sheev), but the effect is the same no matter the gender of the character performing the status and the one affected by it. This trope doesn't apply to character immune to horniness.
* TheAnnouncer: Keeping with the Super Smash Bros. tradition of course. Originally, sentence mixing with Pat Cashman's voice was done, but after the post-stage overhaul, he was supposively KilledOffForReal and replaced with unlockable announcers. The first being Morgan Freeman.
* ArtEvolution: In the video showing Jameson's Daily Bugle Codec, the art style was upgraded from ''Brawl'' to ''Smash 4''[='=]s artstyle, and has stayed that way since.
* BattleAura: Starting from Mary's moveset, characters who breaks a Smash Ball will have a purple aura around them, replacing the PowerGlows from pre-Mary videos.
* BilingualBonus: All characters from Mexican sources (Don Ramon, Jaime Maussan, Carlos Trejo and narrator Julio Cesar Palomera) speaks normal Spanish instead of having gag subtitles like character that speaks German or Japanese. This makes sense since Chincherrinas is Mexican.
* BilingualDialogue: All characters understand each-other’s dialogue, whether it be in German, Spanish, English, or Japanese.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Child characters are completely immune to the horniness status effect.
* CompanyCrossReferences: There are several references to ''WebAnimation/TheFrolloShow'', Chicherrinas' other major series.
** The bros pose is sometime used:
*** One of Aya's victory poses has her and Ogre perform the Bros Pose before teleporting away.
*** An other subtle reference of the Bros Pose is in Dr. Wily's IdleAnimation where he gives a thumb up in one and raise his arms in the other.
*** If a Kruel KO happens on the Epic Sax Stage, the winner will do the bros pose with the Epic Sax Guy.
*** Jameson and Codec Snake makes one in the video introducing Jameson's codecs when Jameson allows Snake to stay in Lawl.
** There is a stage based on Wilford Brimley's dimension in ''Frollo Finally Does It''.
** One of Billy Mays's victory poses has him hold the Magic Fire/Bleemo, with its price being $80,000.
** Pyron's newcomer tagline is "Pyron Finally does it" referencing the last story arc of the Frollo Show "Frollo finally does it".
** Jameson's codec on Frollo makes references to Frollo's personality in it, notably his friendship with Gaston and his attraction toward Panty. Snake's Codec outright name drop the series.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Multiple times in a character's moveset video, a future character is shown, especially earlier on.
** Leonidas was revealed on the character menu before he first appeared for real.
** Gaston foreshadowed his appearance in Subspace Emissary before his proper introduction.
** Yomika was also first seen in Madotsuki's Classic Mode run, then her moveset was uploaded later on.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Earlier videos in the series were made by superimposing the characters over ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'' footage, and often when fighting against actual ''Brawl'' characters, [[SpecialEffectFailure you could see the characters underneath whose attacks are used as a base for the new characters' ones]][[note]]For example, I.M. Meen's moveset was edited on Pikachu's Thunder Jolt and Skull Bash, Pit's Angel Ring, Zelda's Wind of Farore and Wario's Wario Waft[[/note]]. The scenes where Lawl characters fought against eachother were animated from scratch instead, and so were later videos after the whole "characters Sakurai missed" schtick was removed.
* EvilIsHammy: Villainous characters tend to follow this attribute (I.E. Cartoon Wily, Bison, etc).
* FramingDevice: Mama Luigi's moveset mainly comes from a bedtime story he told to Yoshi.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent:
** At the end of WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic's introductory video, his face is seen on the Irate Gamer's Smash Bros. poster.
** During the intro to Wily’s moveset video, you can very briefly see [[ComedicSociopathy Meen falling outside Madotsuki’s balcony door.]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Starting from Mary's moveset, any character will have yellow glowing eyes after breaking a Smash Ball just like the original ''Smash Bros" games.
* HypocriticalHumor: At the end of J. Jonah Jameson's moveset video, Hitler calls him a "whiny mustached man".
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Several characters have objects you wouldn't expect to be used for fighting.
* {{Irony}}: Guile's Final Smash, "Anti-Terrorism", is essentially an [[ExplosiveStupidity unintentional]] suicide bombing.
* MemeticMolester: I.M. Meen is portrayed multiple times as a pedophile InUniverse.
** The King accuses IM Meen of being a pedophile in Subspace Emisarry.
** The captions in I.M. Meen's introductory video also accuse I.M. Meen of being a pedophile.
** I.M. Meen's character description in Classic Mode lists "pedophilia" as one of his diseases.
** When he wins Classic Mode, [[spoiler: the captions say that I.M. Meen couldn't control his "rape face".]]
* NoodleIncident / RunningGag: Almost every time a battle starts and then gets cut to the very end, the "player" has 999% damage. Apparently there is always a ThatOneBoss or DemonicSpider lurking between the transitions.
* RageBreakingPoint: The final smashes for Nostalgia Critic (the newer one, Critical Rage), Leonidas, Nicolas Cage, and Mary.
* PowerGlows: Up to Jameson's moveset, any character who breaks a Smash Ball would start to glow. This is later replaced by a purple BattleAura.
* RecurringRiff: A lot of the stage music for each stage is just remixes of the same song.
* RedShirtArmy: Leonidas’ Spartan Soldiers and Frollo’s Guards can be defeated very easily after being summoned.
* SelfDeprecation: Part of the codec call Snake has about Frollo references how ''WebAnimation/TheFrolloShow'' (another thing made by Chincherrinas) isn't that known.
* ShoutOut:
** From Hyrule,
--> '''I.M. Meen:''' [[VideoGame/HotelMario You bring a light?]]
--> '''The King:''' [[MemeticMutation No]].
** The trailer for Sheev's moveset video parodies [[Franchise/DonkeyKong King K. Rool]]'s reveal trailer for ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'', with Obi-Wan and Anakin as Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong respectively, King Harkinian as [[Franchise/{{Kirby}} King Dedede]], and Sheev as King K. Rool.
* SitcomArchNemesis: Carlos Trejo absolutely despises Jaime Maussan, but the latter seems rather indifferent to this. At best he's slighty offended at being insulted but that's a normal reaction.
* SmallReferencePools: Hardly anyone knows who Yomika is, in or out of the universe. The same could be said for characters from maxican sources or New Hercules.
* SoBadItsGood:
** InUniverse. Anything with the word “Best” as the first part of its name is bound to fall here.
** Irate Gamer would also go under here.
* SummonMagic: Many attacks involve briefly summoning another character from the fighter's original work.
* SupervillainLair: Meen's Lair, Robotnik's Lair, Bison's Base, and Wily Castle. Alfred Drevis' Laboratory also counts to a lesser degree.
* TakeThat:
** The Irate Gamer's gimmick is copying other characters... badly. Referencing how he's known for copying the Angry Video Game Nerd.
** The weakest assist trophy is the earth benders from the Last Airbender movie, it takes them seconds to throw a very slow projectile that do 1% damage.
* UnsportsmanlikeGloating: Some of the characters’ victory screens, such as AVGN’s “Want me to spell it out for you? you're a '''POOP'''yhead.” and Hank Hill’s “LOSER! YOU’RE A LOSER!” cap this pretty decently.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Early on (InUniverse), they characters who were "left out" of Smash Bros. Brawl with the video description jokingly pretending they were supposed to be part of ''Brawl''.
* WoobieOfMassDestruction: [[VideoGame/MetalGearSolid Codec Mei-Ling]] sees WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic as this.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Classic Mode]]
* AndYourLittleDogToo: A post-defeat version, where I.M. Meen talks about how he'll abduct the opponents’ children after he defeats them.
* TheBadGuyWins: If you pick a villainous character and win Classic Mode, the wish they get from Chuck Norris will likely have something bad happen, if the video of Meen's run through Classic Mode is any indication.
* ConsolationPrize: Madotsuki's “dialogue” suggests that she gives gifts to some opponents out of pity when she defeats them.
* {{Facepalm}}: Madotsuki’s old losing animation.
* HandshakeSubstitute: Madotsuki and Yomika perform an over-the-top fist bump before their battle.
* HeroicMime: [[ParodiedTrope Parodied]] in Madotsuki's Classic Mode.
* KneelBeforeZod: The King tells I. M. Meen to bow to him in Classic Mode.
* LawfulStupid: Meen calls Leonidas’ soldiers this after he beats him.
--> ''"Three hundred men following orders, an army of goodie-goodies won't conquer you borders!"''
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: The Narrator tells a line of this after Chuck Norris appears from the background.
--> ''Morgan Freeman: "[[OhCrap Oh,]] [[PrecisionFStrike fuck...]]"''
--> ''Will Smith: "You can’t be afraid...... [[GoYeHeroesGoAndDie to die.]]"''
* NotBigEnoughForTheTwoOfUs: I.M. Meen's quote after defeating Frollo.
--> ''"You that love to be in God's plan... there's room in his world for one singing old man!"''
* TheRival: Everyone have two rivals, a minor one and a major one, the minor one is when you reach half of classic mode and the major one it the penultimate battle before the boss.
* TwistingTheWords: Meen does this with one of Gaston's quotes after defeating him.
--> ''"Four dozen eggs, hmm? A new recipe for my lads!"''
* ShoutOut:
** Classic mode takes an appearance of the Arcade mode of the ''Franchise/StreetFighter'' games.
*** The bonus stage also uses the same background of ''Street Fighter'''s bonus stage.
** The game gives the player an option to skip the bonus stage. The "Yes" option is Bison's memetic face, while the "No" option is the [[VideoGame/TeamFortress2 Engineer's Nope.avi]].
* WinsByDoingAbsolutelyNothing: {{implied}} in Meen's “fight” against Irate Gamer since he's in the exact same spot after the fight skip.
* WorthyOpponent: Madotsuki's win "quote" against Yomika is to nod in approval.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Adventure Mode (Subspace Emissary)]]
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: The later parts of ???.
* AGlitchInTheMatrix: [[spoiler: Masada Wiseau, a strange combination of Seccom Masada-sensei and Tommy Wiseau, comes straight in the middle of the “???” stage, which, aside from the ending scene, is a heavily accurate shout-out to ''VideoGame/YumeNikki''. It’s even more notable as the only line he has in his cutscene is the first line Madotsuki heard from Tommy Wiseau while they were being rescued by the Nostalgia Critic.]]
* AdvancingWallOfDoom: One made of ''fire'' pursues the player through part of Persian Forest. It does stop at a certain point, though.
* AllJustADream: [[spoiler: The VideoGame/YumeNikki-inspired "???" level.]]
* AnnoyingVideoGameHelper: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]]. Not even I.M. Meen can put up with [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Kaepora Gaebora]].
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: The giant version of Irate Gamer made of Shadow Bugs.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny:
** Tommy Wiseau gets easily distracted by a butterfly in the Bicycle Tracks stage, separating him away from the group.
** Mary is too busy playing with her new Dark Gun to hear Hitler's instructions on handling it, and ends up accidentally shooting him in the process.
* BigWhat: The Nostalgia Critic lets one out when he sees Tommy Wiseau for the first time.
* BloodKnight: Leonidas is out to kill ''every'' Primid, including one [[CowardlyMooks that runs away.]]
---> ''“COWARD!”''
* BossInMookClothing:
** [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Skull Kid]], a miniboss you suddenly encounter near the end of Lost Woods.
** Dragon Breath, one of the badniks you face in Final Forest.
* BlastingItOutOfTheirHands: Leonidas throws a spear at Xerxes’ Dark Gun, knocking it away and out-of-reach.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler: Doug is one of Nostalgia Critic.]]
* ChekhovsSkill: Learn how to take advantage of Kyukyu-Kun in ???, because it's the key to defeating the boss at the end.
* CutsceneBoss: Irate Gamer is effortlessly taken down by a single football toss from Tommy in the opening of Villains Valley.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: Nostalgia Critic’s Up B (Mako Miracle) lasts FAR longer and covers FAR more horizontal distance in the ending cutscene of the level ‘Real City’ then in actual gameplay.
* DetectivesFollowFootprints: The point of the Bicycle Tracks stage in ''Subspace Emissary'' is that Nostalgia Critic, Madotsuki, and Tommy Wiseau are following tracks left by the Irate Gamer to track him down.
* DistressedDude: People get turned into trophies and captured quite a lot.
** AVGN by Irate Gamer.
** Mama Luigi and [[spoiler: The King for a brief period]] by Dr. Robotnik.
** I.M. Meen by Gaston for a short moment.
** Hitler by Mary for a few seconds.
** Pyron by Carlos Trejo.
* DodgeTheBullet: Irate Gamer dodges Nostalgia Critic's gunshot after trophying AVGN.
* DoomedHometown: The homes of Harkinian, AVGN, Tommy Wiseau, Madotsuki, and Leonidas are all destroyed in their introductory levels.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler:Villains Valley ends with Nostalgia Critic being turned into [[ItsAllAboutMe Doug]] and abandoning the group because of the Ronald Monks.]]
* DualBoss:
** On the Bicycle Tracks, [[spoiler: Tommy is face to face with False Nostalgia Critic and Madotsuki]].
** In [[spoiler: Final Forest, The King and Leonidas must both fight Frollo and Gaston]].
* EnemyMine: The King and IM Meen team up and eventually upgrade to VitriolicBestBuds. Later, Nostalgia Critic and Tommy Wiseau team up after fighting and stick together.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler: Villains Valley has Nostalgia Critic take a syringe from the Ronald Monks and turn into Doug Walker.]]
* GoodAllAlong: It is implied that [[spoiler: Gaston (and by extension, Frollo)]] is this. He is seen using a Dark Cannon, But [[spoiler: in his EarlyBirdCameo, it's dropped at his feet, meaning it wasn't his. He and Frollo also have King Dedede's special pins on their trophy forms]]. He also [[spoiler: kept Coconuts from pursuing Meen]].
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Guile and Ib team-up during the fight against Sagat. [[spoiler: and by extension, after.]]
* FutureMeScaresMe: Luigi and Mama Luigi encounter each other and both run off in opposite directions, screaming.
* KneelBeforeZod: The beginning of the Subspace Emissary mode starts with Meen claiming that he's the king of Youtube Poop and requests bowing.
* MagicalMysteryDoors: The main mechanic of the "Lost Woods" level, where all the tunnels look the same, but taking the wrong one puts you back two rooms.
* MalevolentMugshot: The King’s kingdom. The castle is named as ''his'' castle, he has a gigantic statue of himself raising his signature goblet, and the wall gate (as well as the gate remote itself) have images of his face plastered on. Heck, the gate's remote even uses the King’s voice for the “beep” sound!
* MarathonBoss: The Persian Messenger is depicted as this, with him taking a long time to give a very short opening, where only a small amount of damage can be given. Chincherrinas [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it with the transition: "Watching this whole battle [[MemeticMutation would be madness!]]"
* MentalWorld: [[spoiler: The "???" Level.]]
* MultiMookMelee: Happens multiple times.
* MythologyGag:
** The reason Tommy Wiseau attacks Nostalgia Critic is because of the Critic trashing [[Film/TheRoom2003 his movie]] in a review.
** The reason Yoshi was sleeping in the real ''Subspace Emissary''? Mama Luigi told him a bedtime story.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: [[spoiler: Tommy Wiseau starts fighting the evil clone of the Nostalgia Critic, but Madotsuki mistakes him for the real one, so she thinks Tommy's betrayed them.]]
* {{Narcissist}}: I.M. Meen acts like one during the opening cutscene to Hyrule.
** [[spoiler: A much more serious version of this is with Doug, who abandons everyone with a sign saying “Demo Reel is good”.]]
* OhCrap: Nostalgia Critic has a non-verbal one when he realizes the fight with False Irate Gamer ''may'' not be as much of a cakewalk as first thought.
* PragmaticVillainy: I.M. Meen starts off like this, only fighting the primids in order to save his ‘beautiful land’.
* PuzzleBoss: All of the boss unlike in the original ''Super Smash Bros Brawl'' game.
* RashomonStyle: To the original ''Subspace Emissary'', this time showing the point of view of the characters who were "left out". The presence of the Halberd in Hyrule is the first sign, but it becomes even more apparent starting in Sparta, where characters are shown being a secret part of what is already known of the story.
* {{Retool}}: From the "Villains Valley" episode, the story of Smash Bros Lawl changes its trajectory for a radically different plot. [[spoiler: Nostalgia Critic becomes Doug, in reference to real-life events that came to light after the original story began, and the Subspace Emissary homage is abandoned in favour of having the Ronald Monks as the new primary antagonists.]]
* RecurringDreams: [[spoiler: Madotsuki’s dream of getting attacked by Big Red during the Real City stage is repeated in the “???” level, though the latter has him getting defeated by Nostalgia Critic.]]
* SlowNo: When Nostalgia Critic tries to save Madotsuki from the Subspace Bomb.
* StealthPun: In Villains Valley, after [[spoiler:Nostalgia Critic transforms into Doug Walker, he takes control of Robotnik’s Egg Walker, leading to a fight with ''Doug'' on Egg ''Walker'']].
* TimedMission: The first part of Persian Forest requires you to kill 20 Persian Warriors before 50 seconds run out.
* TokenEvilTeammate: I.M. Meen is the first villainous protagonist, while Robotnik teams up with Tommy’s crew.
* UnexpectedGameplayChange: Sometimes throughout the story, instead of standard Smash battles or boss fights, the game shifts to Stamina mode. When this happen, the loser doesn't turn into a trophy after the fight.
* UtilityWeapon: I.M. Meen can uses his Meen Magic to light up a lantern and access a secret room in Glutko's Cave.
* VillainTeamUp:
** [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog Dr. Robotnik]] and [[Film/ThreeHundred Xerxes]] team up in Subspace Emissary. The player must fight a mixed crowd of their {{mook}}s on a few occasions.
** [[Film/{{Downfall}} Hitler]] [[spoiler: releases [[VideoGame/{{Ib}} Mary]] from a painting so that she can team up with him. Said teamup is rather comedic]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: The King and IM Meen become this over time. It is implied that Nostalgia Critic and AVGN are this, as well.
* WinToExit: [[spoiler: The player can still lose stocks in Madotsuki’s dream sequence, which means it’s fully possible for Madotsuki to “die” in her dream.]]
