''Nazo Unleashed'' is a fan-made WebAnimation trilogy of ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' by [[MediaNotes/AdobeFlash Flash]] animator Aaron "Chakra-X" Cowdery ([[http://chakra-x.newgrounds.com/ Newgrounds]], [[http://chakra-x.deviantart.com deviantART]], and [[https://www.youtube.com/user/ChakraXNewgrounds YouTube]]). It is based around an [[http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/b/bb/Nazo_x.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070206010049 unused screenshot]] from ''Anime/SonicX'' that had a hedgehog with spiked-up quills and a silver coat.[[note]]It was later confirmed by Takashi Iizuka that "Nazo" was actually an alternative design for Super Sonic[[/note]] The mysterious character was {{Fan Nickname}}d "Nazo", a Japanese word for "mystery", after the name of the image file on the website.

The premise of the trilogy is that Nazo [[MadeOfEvil is a sentient being created from the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds]]. Nazo is a hedgehog because the Chaos Emeralds have gotten accustomed to the forms of Sonic and Shadow. Of course, something made of negative energy like that is going to turn out evil. Nazo then goes around the world collecting the Chaos Emeralds in his plan to become more powerful, leaving much destruction in his wake. Sonic and his friends hear of this and go to take him down, but they are easily defeated. [[TheRival Shadow]] then comes in try to defeat Nazo, but is defeated too. Only when the two hedgehogs use their {{Super Mode}}s together can they take him down, but it turns out Nazo has other plans...

The biggest claim to fame of this series are the masterfully animated fight scenes. Of course, it's quite obvious [[Franchise/DragonBall where they got their inspiration]], but it pulls it off very well, as they carry the tension, action, and fluidity as expected of those scenes.

The originals can be found on Platform/{{Newgrounds}} ([[http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/331288 Part 1]], [[http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/333858 Part 2]], and [[http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/396530 Part 3]]). The series has undergone two rereleases by Chakra-X, both of which improve the animation with techniques that he learned after high school; one is the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZxseZ1dRMA HD Director's Cut]], which adds annotation commentary and cuts the three parts together as one movie. This version was further remastered as ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-etGCr7SM4 Nazo Unleashed DX]]'', which more cleanly up-scales the movie to the video format and adds further additions.

Chakra-X eventually stated that he would like to make a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBb2vL_fsII fully official sequel]] 10 years after its original release. In February 2016, he has released [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0mDYDAYx7A the first official teaser]] for ''The Wrath of Nazo''. It was originally scheduled for a 2019 release; however, due to the run-time ending up being longer than originally intended[[note]]the original intention was for it to be fifteen minutes overall; after the script was done it ended up becoming twenty-five minutes, then after several more edits to the plot and realizing the originally planned ending ended up being rather [[AntiClimax anti-climatic]], it ultimately got pushed up to forty minutes[[/note]], the date was pushed back to a currently undefined date. Chakra has stated that he hopes to at least get Act I and II out by 2019, with Act III coming sometime after but doesn't want to give any solid dates due to how much the animation process can speed up and slow down during development. On July 13th, 2022, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXD6TGItKvI Chakra announced that the project was cancelled after not working on it for a year]], though a 40+ minute animatic of it is planned to be released later. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjlrzA_MSWI&pp=wgIGCgQQAhgB Part 1]] was released on December 27th, 2023.

After Nazo Unleashed DX was marked "For Kids" by Website/{{YouTube}} in 2022, an edit of the DX version was released including a disclaimer at the beginning and yet another edit to the Hyper transformations for Sonic & Shadow (and to an extent, Shadic).

!!Tropes:
[[foldercontrol]]
[[folder:''Nazo Unleashed'']]
* AdaptationalBadass: [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo is a lot more impressive here than in the original ''The Power of Nazo'' film that ''Nazo Unleashed'' is a remake of. Instead of losing to Hyper Shadic in a CurbStompBattle, he is close to evenly matched, and then becomes even more powerful than that, forcing all the heroes to work together to defeat him.]]
* AllThereInTheStinger: The Stinger shows Dr. Eggman finding one of Nazo's bracelets and laughing evilly to himself. [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzagged]]: Chakra-X initially stated that he didn't want to follow up on the stinger, then announced ''The Wrath of Nazo'' as a sequel following on from said stinger, then cancelled it due to time constraints, then eventually committed to releasing it as a fully-voiced animatic.
* {{Animesque}}: The art style is much like that of ''Anime/SonicX''.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: During the climactic battle, [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo [[WorthyOpponent expresses his admiration for]] Sonic and Shadow's FusionDance into Hyper Shadic]]... then pointedly asks how many Rings they have left. Cue a ''massive'' OhCrap moment for [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic]] as they realise they can't sustain the transformation for much longer.
* ArtEvolution: Considering the creation of the series took place over several years, it was bound to happen. Chakra X stated he worked on the fight scenes first, and at some points (especially in part 2) it can show. However, episode three began work sometime after episodes one or two were done, and the contrast is quite impressive. Compare the rather stiff flash based movements of episodes one and two to the incredibly fluent episode three, which can give even hand drawn animation a run for it's money.
* AutobotsRockOut: The series uses some of the songs from the ''Sonic'' games to emphasize the action. "[[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Open Your Heart]]", "[[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 Live and Learn]]", and "[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 His World]]", are just some of the tracks used to intensify the action on-screen.
* AwesomeButImpractical: [[spoiler:[[FusionDance Shadic]]. Strong enough to take out pretty much anything in the official canon with ease. However, the unification requires an amount of chaos energy to be present that can only be supplied by the Super Emeralds, and because of this, his default state is Hyper form and when his rings run out, he separates. On top of that, since he's both in Hyper form as well as two hedgehogs in one, he burns far more rings per second than a standard Super form[[note]]According to the special edition, Hyper Shadic burns around 20 to 60 rings ''per second''. But according to the DX edition (which came after), [[WritersCannotDoMath Chakra-X realized that the numbers given doesn’t make any sense]] and took it back.[[/note]].]]
* AxCrazy: Nazo. He obliterated the city where one of the Chaos Emeralds was stored, just because he could.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Tails, thanks to Knuckles reviving him.]]
** [[AvertedTrope Averted]]: [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo was still alive after taking a full-on blast from Hyper Shadic. Hyper Shadic then puts an end to him before he can do anything else.]]
* BadassBoast: Nazo delivers two excellent ones, one before [[spoiler:achieving his Perfect form]] and another just after [[spoiler:powering up even further]].
-->'''Nazo''': YouAreTooLate, Sonic! I have all the Emeralds at the altar! With these Emeralds, I will annihilate this planet! ''I am pure Chaos!'' [''DramaticThunder''] With the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald, [[AGodAmI I will go beyond the strength of a god!]] Perfect Chaos is ''nothing'' compared to me! Sonic... Shadow... everyone and everything you know is now coming to an end. Witness the raw power... ''of Chaos!''
-->'''[[spoiler:Perfect]] Nazo''': Understand this -- [[spoiler:Shadic]], Tails, Knuckles -- all of you combined could not match the amount of energy which I now possess. Although you have always been faster than me, [[spoiler:Shadic]], your speed will mean nothing when I destroy this planet.
* BashBrothers: Super Sonic and Super Shadow, who take down Nazo working together.
* BeamOWar: [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic engages in one against Perfect Nazo's giant EnergyBall. Nazo then adds more energy to it, increasing its size and Shadic starts to lose. Only with Hyper Knuckles and Hyper Tails' assistance does Shadic win.]]
* BigBad: Nazo.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: Several times, but the one that especially stands out is in the aforementioned BeamOWar. Knuckles and Tails '''finally''' transform into their Hyper and Super forms and provide the distraction for Shadic to win.]]
* BigNo: Sonic, when [[spoiler:Tails is killed by Nazo.]]
** [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo]] also gets one [[spoiler:when Hyper Shadic takes the negative energy he absorbed from the Super Emeralds and uses them to transform.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler:After Hyper Shadic apparently blasts Perfect Nazo into a void beyond space, Hyper Shadic then pulls out the extra energy that made Nazo perfect, turning him normal, then blasts him away.]]
* CallingYourAttacks: Super Sonic, Super Shadow, [[spoiler:(Perfect)]] Nazo and [[spoiler:[[FusionDance Hyper Shadic]]]] all do this.
* ClassicVillain: Nazo, who fits the mold of a {{Pride}} villain.
* ColorCodedTimeStop: [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo's Perfect Chaos Control creates this aura, and even uses this against Super Shadow's normal Chaos Control.]]
** [[spoiler:Eventually, Hyper Shadic uses a Hyper Chaos Control to equal Perfect Nazo's, resulting in a brawl within a time stop.]]
* CombinedEnergyAttack: [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic powers up his [[KamehameHadoken Billion Ring Chaos Wind]] by absorbing the rings throughout the world. Sonic's friends and rivals, as well as [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario and Luigi]], help by raising their rings skyward.]]
* ContinuityCameo: Team Rose, the rest of Team Dark, Team Chaotix, Dr. Eggman, and Metal Sonic, all make brief non-speaking appearances (though Amy gets in a singular distressed "Sonic!" when she sees the pillar of light emanating from Angel Island). [[spoiler:Though Eggman does give a hearty EvilLaugh in TheStinger.]]
* ContinuityPorn: Despite taking a lot from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', the series still roots itself firmly into the games' canon. Chakra-X even identifies which moves originate from the games in the HD Director's Cut.
* CurbStompBattle:
** Anyone in anything short of SuperMode that engaged Nazo winds up on the receiving end of one of these. Nazo himself getting [[MegatonPunch punched]] [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom out]] by [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Dark Sonic]] somewhat qualifies as well.
** [[spoiler:After Nazo goes "Perfect", even the Super Modes get curb-stomped, and so they have to take it up to Hyper Mode FusionDance instead.]]
* DePower: [[spoiler:In the end, Shadic uses the Super Emeralds on the weakened Hyper Nazo to steal back the excess negative energy he stole to recharge the gems, then further drains out the energy he used to achieve his Perfect form before finally blasting Nazo into oblivion]].
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:Before Perfect Nazo (who is said to be more powerful than the God of Destruction Perfect Chaos) [[EarthShatteringKaboom destroys the Earth]] with a [[KiManipulation Chaos energy blast]], [[FusionDance Hyper Shadic]] kicks him in the face so hard that he flies right through and into a rock.]]
* DisappointedByTheMotive: The heroes are infuriated to learn that Nazo's callous motives for destroying the earth [[spoiler: are to shatter the Master Emerald purely out of jealousy of its unlimited power]].
* DrivenByEnvy: Nazo's reason for wanting to destroy the Earth is that [[spoiler:he's envious of the fact that the Master Emerald will always be more powerful than him, and plans on destroying Earth with the Master Emerald on it so that its shards will be scattered across space with no way to reunite them]].
* EarthShatteringKaboom: [[spoiler:Nazo's ultimate goal, at least as far as the Earth is concerned. He can't stand the thought of always being second best to the Master Emerald, so he intends to blow the Earth and everything on it to bits in an attempt to destroy the Emerald.]]
* EnergyBeing: Nazo is made of Chaos Energy.
* EpilepticFlashingLights: Admittedly, people with epilepsy should be wary of the [[spoiler: Shadic introduction bit]] of part three. Because of the setup, there are a ''lot'' of rapidly flashing lights [[spoiler: courtesy of Sonic and Shadow's hyper forms]] and Sonic and Shadow's voice clips are overplayed three times as a result of [[spoiler: PowerEchoes]]. The end result is a bit that can be rather overwhelming on the senses. Even people who don't have epilepsy have reported getting mild headaches at this part.
* EverythingsBetterWithRainbows: [[spoiler:Sonic and Shadow's Hyper forms constantly shift colors, and Hyper Shadic's BattleAura is the rapidly shifting colors of the seven Super Emeralds, which resembles a rainbow. At least until he powers up to the max, upon which it becomes pure white]].
* EvilIsPetty: [[spoiler:Nazo's wants to destroy the Master Emerald because no matter how much energy he absorbs it will always be more powerful than him and he hates being "subordinate to a rock". If the entire planet has to be destroyed, so be it]].
* EvilLaugh: Shadow laughs evilly before he rises from the ground after being knocked down by Nazo.
** Nazo also delivers an evil laugh [[spoiler:as he transforms into his perfect form.]]
** Shadow gets another evil laugh when he removes his [[PowerLimiter inhibitor rings]] on Angel Island to transform.
** [[spoiler:Eggman gives a hearty one in TheStinger.]]
* EvilSoundsRaspy: The noticeable change in Nazo's voice after transforming into his Perfect form, went from a smooth sounding tenor to a slightly high-pitched but hoarse voice that sounds almost similar to that of Imperfect Cell.
* {{Expy}}:
** [[spoiler:Shadic is an obvious expy of [[Anime/DragonBallZ Gogeta and Vegito]].]]
** Of course, Nazo's [[spoiler:final form and origins are directly inspired by [[Anime/DragonBallGT Omega Shenron]].]]
* {{Facepalm}}: Sonic does this [[TakeThat in response]] to Shadow [[VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog pointing a gun]] at Nazo.
---> '''Sonic:''' [''in his mind''] You must be kidding!
* FanEdit: Four remakes featuring background music (as well as higher quality voice clips and SFX) from the English and Japanese versions of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' as well as ''Anime/DragonBallZKai'' have been released. Take your pick:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Fn2KKjSe4 Shunsuke Kikuchi Remake]] (music used in the original Japanese version Dragon Ball Z)
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cozl1ZMkwaY Bruce Faulconer Remake]] (music used in Funimation's English dub of Dragon Ball Z)
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ1iWF-CKjM Kenji Yamamoto Remake]] (music used in Dragon Ball Z Kai)
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INzC3hKGklQ Remix]] by [=HerotonVA=]. It includes actual voice-acting, improved lip-syncing, new animation, a new soundtrack and a new after-credits scene.
* FanSequel: ''The Return of Nazo'', made by Sunshinethefox, and [[ApprovalOfGod approved by Chakra-X.]] Unfortunately, it reached DeadFic status after only one part.[[invoked]]
* FakeShemp: Every character's dialogue except for Nazo's is made up of recycled sound clips from various games, up to ''Shadow the Hedgehog''. [[QuoteMine The sentences are strung together]] to somehow form a narrative. While it can sound silly at times and is very noticeable, it sounds surprisingly, if mostly, professional.
* FightingSeries: With this animation being modeled after ''Dragon Ball Z'', its conflicts are solved with fisticuffs.
* ForTheEvulz: Nazo destroys an entire city with a smile on his face, just because he could.
* FragileSpeedster: Base Sonic lasts quite a while against Nazo's attacks just because he's so fast Nazo can't keep track of him. Nazo levels the playing field with Chaos Control though, and after one good hit Sonic is down for the count.
* FreezeFrameBonus: [[spoiler:In the sequence where Hyper Shadic draws in rings for the Billion Ring Chaos Wind, Mario and Luigi are briefly seen as those who are contributing their rings to the attack.]]
* FusionDance: [[spoiler:Sonic and Shadow, after assuming their [[SuperMode Hyper Modes]], Chaos Control into the same place to become Hyper Shadic.]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Shadow's eyes glow red when he's starting to get pissed.
* AGodAmI: Nazo calls his eventual [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo]] form more powerful than a god, specifically citing the God of Destruction [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Perfect Chaos]] as being "nothing" in comparison.
* HandshakeSubstitute: Sonic and Shadow does the fist bump after defeating Nazo in stage 2. Then in the end, [[spoiler:Sonic and Knuckles does this after the defeat of Perfect Nazo]].
* HealingFactor: Nazo, as a being of Chaos energy, isn't burdened by the limits of biological regeneration and, when given a moment, is able to heal from almost any damage. This is primarily why he was able to survive against both Super Sonic and Super Shadow, who could match and surpass him in a straight fight, but eventually run out of stamina or rings, as well as why Dark Super Sonic (despite being more powerful than his Base) couldn't kill him with just physical blows alone. [[spoiler:It ups in power once he goes Perfect and Hyper, to the point that even Hyper Shadic's final energy beam that destroys his planet-busting attack and blasts him into space isn't quite enough to finish him. Nazo only goes down permanently when Shadic rips out the negative energy that made Nazo perfect and then blasts his Base form into nothing]].
* HealingHands: [[spoiler:Knuckles transfers rings to Tails to revive him. Visually, it looks very [[Anime/DragonBallZ Dende-esque]].]]
* HeroicBSOD: Sonic undergoes one after [[spoiler:Nazo kills Tails]]. Sonic then assumes his "Dark Super Sonic" form to beat Nazo down.
* HeroicResolve: [[spoiler:Sonic and Shadow do their hyper fusion after they get knocked out by Perfect Nazo and after thinking about their friends and remembering Tikal's prayer to the Master Emerald]]
* KiManipulation: Or Chaos energy attacks if you prefer. Nazo is literally made of the stuff and displays a wider variety of, and heavier reliance on, Chaos techniques than any of the protagonists.
* KilledMidSentence: [[spoiler:Tails at Nazo's hands, though it's more like killed mid-word (as he was saying Sonic's name).]]
* IAmNotLeftHanded: [[spoiler:Shadow removes his PowerLimiter rings in order to perform a Chaos Blast to take Perfect Nazo down. Unfortunately, it doesn't work, and the effort wears Shadow out and leaves him vulnerable to an attack from Nazo.]]
* IronicEcho: [[spoiler:After Shadow's Chaos Blast fails to harm Perfect Nazo, Nazo tells a shocked Shadow "''I'' am the ultimate life form!"]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: Nazo explains that since he's made of Chaos Energy, it makes him continuously hungry for more and more energy. [[spoiler:He also plans to destroy the world in order to destroy the Master Emerald, since his {{Pride}} dictates that he can't be inferior to an inanimate object.]]
* IWasJustPassingThrough: Shadow says a quote to Sonic from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', stating that he came for the Chaos Emeralds, and not because he saved him from Nazo's attack.
* MadeOfEvil: Nazo, who is made of the excess negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds.
* MeteorMove: As part of the ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' homages, this is used a lot.
* MightyGlacier: Nazo himself. While he's not actually that slow, he noticeably never displays the same level of speed as either Sonic or Shadow to the point that he couldn't even land an attack on Base Sonic without resorting to Chaos Control. In return however he's strong enough to effortlessly knock out [[TheBigGuy Knuckles]] with one blow, match blows with Sonic and Shadow in their Super forms while only being in Base form himself and has a HealingFactor that allows him to recover from almost anything. [[spoiler: Even after Perfect Nazo absorbs the negative energy of the Super Emeralds to achieve his own Hyper form he admits that Hyper Shadic is probably still his superior in pure speed]].
* MotiveRant: [[spoiler:After Perfect Nazo absorbs the power of the Super Emeralds, he decides to give Shadic, Tails, and Knuckles an explanation of his plans and his motive before he destroys the world. Justified, since he's now significantly more powerful than even Hyper Shadic, and as he points out, Shadic has a very strict time limit in the form of rings while Nazo is self-sustaining.]]
* MrExposition: See MotiveRant above.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: {{Subverted}} when Knuckles uses his HealingHands on Tails. While there are no canon materials that even hint Knuckles can heal people on his own, it's revealed in the [=DX=] edition notes that all Knuckles was really doing was transferring rings to Tails to heal him.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero:
** [[spoiler:Transforming the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds allows Sonic and Shadow to access their Hyper forms and perform a FusionDance to create Hyper Shadic. By all appearances, the heroes now have Perfect Nazo on the ropes... until he reveals that transforming the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds, something Nazo points out he himself can't do, also amplified the negative energy within them and gave Nazo the means to become even more powerful]].
** [[spoiler:Nazo's entire existence is the result of this. Every time the heroes used the power of the Master and Chaos Emeralds, negative energy was generated until it became Nazo.]]
* NoSympathy: Shadow picks up Sonic, who was attacked by Perfect Nazo's energy blast, and then tells him his weakness disgusts him.
* OhCrap: Shadow gets this [[spoiler:when his strongest Chaos Blast doesn't work on Perfect Nazo. Hyper Shadic gets one when Perfect Nazo reminds him that he has a time limit. Nazo himself gets this later on when Hyper Shadic is about to kill him.]]
* OmnicidalManiac: Nazo. [[spoiler:He intends to become the most powerful entity in the universe, and is willing to destroy anything and everything in order to collect energy to achieve this.]]
* OnlyWorksOnce: The news and military don't mistake Nazo for Sonic, as they had learned their lesson in making assumptions from ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Nazo's EstablishingCharacterMoment has him blow up downtown Metropolis with a chaos attack. Sonic and Shadow in their Super forms are capable of similar destruction.
* PillarOfLight: [[spoiler:Super Sonic generates one during his transformation. Super Shadow finishes his Chaos attack beat-down on Nazo with a Chaos Spear that detonates as one. Hyper Shadic emerges from Sonic and Shadow's FusionDance in a multicolored one.]] As per the RuleOfCool, it gets used a lot in this series.
* PowerupFullColorChange: [[spoiler:Nazo's fur changes from silver to red when he becomes Perfect Nazo]].
* PrecisionFStrike: Sonic and Knuckles both use the word "bastard", generated by [[QuoteMine editing words together]].
* PreAsskickingOneLiner:
** Shadow delivers one before transforming into Super Shadow to give Nazo a beatdown.
--->'''Shadow''': [[IWarnedYou I told you, didn't I?]] I am the UltimateLifeForm, Shadow the Hedgehog!
** He delivers another later on, before he launches a barrage of Chaos attacks on Nazo.
--->'''Super Shadow''': You're going straight to hell!
** Both Super Sonic and Super Shadow deliver one before they attack Nazo with their Light Speed Attacks.
--->'''Super Sonic''': Check out my speed now!\
'''Super Shadow''': Just watch this!
* PunchCatch: [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Dark]] [[Anime/SonicX Sonic]] catches one of Nazo's punches and counters with [[MegatonPunch a punch one of his own.]]
** [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo even catches Super Sonic's spin dash.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo's BattleAura is dark purple with black mixed in]].
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo, who is dark red, wears black boots, and is even more powerful than "normal" Nazo.]]
* RivalsTeamUp: Sonic and Shadow, especially in their super forms.
* {{Rotoscoping}}: On the annotations for the HD Director's cut, Chakra-X admits to tracing over scenes from ''Anime/SonicX'' and ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', admitting at its laziness.
* SatanicArchetype: Nazo is driven by an insatiable urge to gain an utmost amount of power, and wanted to become the most supreme force in the cosmos. He's also entirely composed of negative energy and uses said energy to either destroy anyone who opposes him or to augment his power even further. He's highly envious of the Master Emerald itself (created by gods) since it contains a limitless source of power that he desperately craves for. His Perfect form also deserves mention, as his red color along with the evil looking spikes protruding from him as well as his Chaos energy attacks being changed to a black and purple color, makes him look like the ''Sonic'' equivalent of a hedgehog devil.
* SequelHook: [[spoiler:TheStinger of part 3 has Eggman laughing to himself as he finds one of Nazo's rings. Directly after this in DX, an annotation pops up and hints at what a sequel would be like.]] While Chakra-X never initially intended to follow up on it, he eventually announced a sequel that would continue on from it; after years of DevelopmentHell, the first past of said sequel arrived in December 2023.
* ShoutOut: The fight scenes are styled very similarly to those of ''Anime/DragonBallZ''. Chakra-X justifies this saying that Sonic's creators admitted to using ''Dragon Ball Z'' as inspiration for the series; Chakra-X just takes the references up a notch.
** The final beam struggle between [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic and Hyper Nazo is modeled after a similar one seen in ''Anime/DragonBallZBrolySecondComing'', where it is a giant beam (Hyper Shadic's Billion Ring Chaos Wind) vs. a giant ball of energy (Nazo's Master Breaker), Chakra-X stating as such in the annotations of the Director's Cut. It even has a moment where Nazo fires a number of smaller energy balls to power up his own attack, only to be attacked and distracted by the heroes, which gives Shadic an opening to penetrate through Nazo's Master Breaker]].
** The Billion Ring Chaos Wind attack draws inspiration from Vegeta's Final Flash in terms of attack posing, along with [[CombinedEnergyAttack how characters would give their energy to the heroes]], similar to the Spirit Bomb, though Chakra-X has said the comparison to the latter attack wasn't intentional.
* SmugSuper:
** Nazo. He is so cocky and self-assured that he actually gets shocked whenever Sonic and Shadow manage to overpower him.
** Shadow himself is a bit proud and cocky, due to being the UltimateLifeForm.
* TheSociopath: Nazo is a cruel being who kills and destroys for power and because he can.
* SpeedBlitz: Super Sonic and Super Shadow engage Nazo in a super-powered Light Speed Attack, in which the two finally defeat him. [[spoiler:They don't have the raw power to finish the job, though, and he opts to just [[HealingFactor lay low while they celebrate]]]].
* TheStoic: Shadow, Nazo and Knuckles.
* SuddenlySpeaking: Downplayed. In his base form, Nazo rarely spoke more than a few words but upon attaining his perfect form, he becomes more talkative and starts [[BadassBoast boasting about his powers]].
* SuperMode: Used very liberally in this series.
** First, there's [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Dark Super Sonic]] from ''Anime/SonicX'', seen in part 1, after Sonic witnesses Tails being murdered by Nazo and he channels the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds into himself.
** Using the power of the seven emeralds, Sonic and Shadow are able to transform into [[GoldenSuperMode Super Sonic and Super Shadow]] in part 2.
** In part 3, this is where the various stages of super forms roll out of the woodwork. [[spoiler:Nazo, using the seven Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald in Angel Island's altar, assumes a dark red form called Perfect Nazo. Sonic and Shadow then transform into their [[VideoGame/Sonic3AndKnuckles Hyper Forms]] thanks to the Super Emeralds right before they FusionDance into Shadic, then Perfect Nazo absorbs the new storage of negative energy from the Super Emeralds to reach his own Hyper Mode. During the last beam clash between Hyper Nazo and Hyper Shadic, Knuckles and Tails become Hyper Knuckles and Hyper Tails to assist Hyper Shadic in defeating Nazo. Finally, Shadic takes back the negative energy Perfect Nazo used to reach Hyper form and uses the revitalized Super Emeralds to become Full Power Hyper Shadic in order to finish Nazo off for good.]]
* SuperpoweredEvilSide:
** Once Nazo induces a HeroicBSOD in Sonic [[spoiler:by killing Tails]], Sonic goes into his "Dark Super Sonic" form from ''Anime/SonicX''. Sonic then calms down to his base form and uses the seven Chaos Emeralds to transform into his GoldenSuperMode. This dark state is said to be physically stronger than Nazo or Super Sonic by a fair margin, but, in addition to the altered personality, it's fueled entirely by negative chaos energy so it wouldn't be able to do much more than toss Nazo around as it fuels him too.
** Shadow also augments his Super Form by removing his PowerLimiter rings and tapping into Dark Chaos power [[spoiler:as an act of desperation against Perfect Nazo in order to use Chaos Blast. It unfortunately doesn't make Nazo flinch]].
* SuperStrength: As in canon, Knuckles is by far the physically strongest of the main characters. In his base form he's able to damage Nazo with brute force alone, something that Sonic and Shadow needed their {{Golden Super Mode}}s to do. [[spoiler:At the climax, in his own SuperMode[[labelnote:Note]]It's not clear whether it's meant to be Super or Hyper, but the afterimages suggest the latter[[/labelnote]] and with a boost from Tails, he can manage to hurt Hyper Nazo, who is much stronger than even [[FusionDance Hyper Shadic]] at that point.]]
* TakeThat: WordOfGod says that the scene with Shadow pointing a gun at Nazo's head and Sonic [[WhatTheHellHero facepalming in response]] was one to [[VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog his game]].[[invoked]]
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. [[spoiler:While fighting Hyper Shadic, Perfect Nazo has a tendency of monologuing and giving [[FauxAffablyEvil false]] VillainRespect. However, this is all a ploy to stall Hyper Shadic and cause his rings to run out, knocking him out of his transformation.]]
* {{Teleportation}}: Shadow and Nazo use Chaos Control teleportation frequently. [[spoiler:Perfect Nazo has the more powerful Perfect Chaos Control, allowing him to move and perceive so fast that Super Shadow using Chaos Control is barely moving by comparison. Later, [[FusionDance Hyper Shadic's]] Hyper Chaos Control is able to match it point for point.]]
* ThisCannotBe:
** Nazo exclaims "Impossible!" after Dark Sonic [[NoSell deflects]] his [[KiManipulation Chaos energy blast]].
** [[spoiler:After {{No Sell}}ing Super Sonic and Super Shadow's attacks, Perfect Nazo is completely assured of his invincibility and considers the newly-created [[FusionDance Hyper Shadic]] to be beneath notice. Then Shadic [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu kicks him in the face]] and sends him flying away into rock, with Perfect Nazo painfully dragging himself out and thinking "this is impossible..."]]
** Nazo says something to this effect right before [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic blasts him away after taking away the energy that made him Perfect Nazo.]]
---> '''Nazo:''' No! You can't be doing this!
* UpdatedRerelease: Chakra-X released a Website/YouTube[=-=]exclusive update called the "Special Editions" which updated the animation with techniques that he learned later on. He also uploaded an HD Director's Cut that improves the animation further and melds together all three parts into one single movie.
* VictoryByEndurance: Nazo manages to win his first bout against Super Sonic through this. Although he was overall weaker than Super Sonic, the fight dragged on for too long, causing Sonic to run out of rings and end up depowering once Nazo managed to land a decisive blow. Later, while Super Shadow was fighting Nazo, Sonic collects 200 rings, 40 of which he gives to Shadow, in order to prevent this from becoming an issue again. [[spoiler: Perfect Nazo later points [[DiscussedTrope this out]] when faced with Hyper Shadic, even though he was the weaker of the two he could maintain his SuperMode indefinitely whilst Shadic had a very strict time limit]].
* VillainousBreakdown: DoubleSubverted. Nazo takes his defeat at the hands of [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic]] remarkably well, reasoning that he can just try again. It's only when [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic tracks him down and starts taking back the energy he absorbed]] that he loses it.
-->'''Nazo:''' No! ''No!'' I will not let this happen! I've had enough of-- [''gets cut off as [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic reverts him back to base form]]''] --no! You can't be doing this!
* VillainRespect: Having shown nothing but disdain for Sonic and Shadow throughout, Nazo is eventually forced to concede that he's impressed by their ability to turn the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds, and by [[spoiler:their subsequent FusionDance]]. He does, however, temper this praise by pointing out the flaws in both actions: respectively, that [[spoiler:they've just given him even more negative energy to absorb]], and that [[spoiler:their ring count is rapidly dwindling - and every second he speaks causes their ring count to drop even lower]]]].
* VoiceOfTheLegion: [[spoiler:[[FusionDance Shadic]], who speaks with both Sonic and Shadow's voices. As a consequence of the two characters' lack of overlapping lines, Shadic doesn't talk much.]]
* WhamLine: Combined with ArmorPiercingQuestion.
-->[[spoiler:'''Perfect Nazo''']]: But tell me, [[spoiler:Hyper Shadic... how many rings do you have left after that little transformation?]]
** Another one comes right after that.
--->[[spoiler:'''Perfect Nazo''']]: I also admit, that I admire your ability to turn Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds, something even I can't do. [[spoiler:However, this also works in ''my'' favor... for now, I can absorb the new reservoir of negative energy!]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Sonic and Knuckles call out Shadow for going too far in trying to use his Chaos Blast to end Nazo.
-->'''Sonic:''' Shadow! Have you lost your mind?!\
'''Shadow:''' [''[[EvilLaugh laughs evilly]]'']\
'''Knuckles:''' That's going too far!
* TheWorfBarrage: [[spoiler:Shadow [[IAmNotLeftHanded removes]] the [[PowerLimiter inhibitor rings]] from his body while in his SuperMode and uses [[SphereOfDestruction Chaos Blast]] in an attempt to deal with Perfect Nazo. It completely drains Shadow of his energy and the light from the blast engulfs the entire island, but it utterly fails to visibly affect Nazo.]]
* TheWorfEffect: Shown when Nazo fells both [[TheBigGuy Knuckles]] and [[UltimateLifeForm Shadow]] with one blow each, though Shadow could at least evade him and counter Nazo's Chaos attacks. It's noted in the HD Director's Cut that Knuckles' Maximum Heat attack would have done a lot of damage if Nazo didn't K.O. him before it connected.
** [[spoiler:After Nazo absorbs the negative energy from the Chaos and Master Emeralds, achieving his Perfect form, both Super Sonic and Super Shadow (either one of whom are somewhat stronger than base form Nazo) attempt to battle him. Nazo {{No Sell}}s a punch to the forehead and [[PunchCatch catches a Spin Attack]] from Super Sonic, casually backhands a Chaos attack and handily out-speeds Chaos Control from Super Shadow, and survives Super Shadow [[IAmNotLeftHanded cutting loose]] with [[SphereOfDestruction Chaos Blast]] with no visible damage.]]

[[folder:''The Wrath of Nazo'']]
* ArtEvolution: While the original trilogy progressively got better and better with each episode, the official sequel takes this up a notch. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0mDYDAYx7A Just by looking at the official teaser, his artwork has gone leaps and bounds to where it is easily comparable to quality animation on TV today.]] Helps that Chakra-X had become a professional animator by that time and worked on several ''official'' animated series.
* ArtShift:
** Knuckles' description of how Eggman tricked him into handing over the Master Emerald is illustrated by a crude crayon-like sequence.
** When Eggman explains that [[spoiler:Chaos Nazo's parts came from [[VideoGameSonic3AndKnuckes Mecha Sonic]]]], a flashback to [[spoiler:Mecha Sonic's TransformationSequence]] from that game is shown in all its 16-bit glory, to hammer home [[DidntThinkThisThrough just how bad of an idea this was]].
* AscendedExtra: Eggman and to a lesser extent, Metal Sonic. In ''Nazo Unleashed'', they only had brief nonverbal cameos, while they have much bigger roles here: Eggman is the chief instigator of the plot and the one who revived Nazo, while Metal Sonic has a brief fight with them.
* BattleshipRaid: The story starts with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles going after the Super [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure Egg Carrier]] to get back the Master Emerald.
* BreathWeapon: [[spoiler:Chaos Nazo destroys a Metal Nazo of himself using this.]]
* BrickJoke: In the beginning of the video, Knuckles explains that Eggman stole the Master Emerald by disguising himself as a jewel-cleaning service. After Team Sonic plus Shadow make it aboard the Super Egg Carrier and Eggman unveils the Master Emerald, Knuckles can't help but note that it ''does'' look cleaner.
* DenserAndWackier: While Chakra-X has said it's still going to have the epic fights the series is known for, he has also said he wants it to have more of a sense of humor to it. This is evident from the opening scene, wherein Knuckles sheepishly admits that Eggman tricked him into handing over the Master Emerald by posing as a jewelry cleaner, complete with cartoonish ArtShift.
* EnemyMine: [[spoiler:Eggman makes one with Team Sonic and Shadow after Nazo goes rogue, instructing them to go to Angel Island with the Master Emerald to stop him.]]
* EvilIsNotAToy: [[spoiler:Eggman revived Nazo from his remains after Sonic and Shadow previously obliterated him, intending to use him as a vessel to power his Super Egg Carrier as well as his Metal Nazos; he even planted a device to his heart that allows him to reign in him whenever he steps out of line. Unfortunately for the doctor, he never expected Nazo to absorb the stolen Master Emerald's energy to power himself up and seemingly bypass this, and he is eviscerated by Chaos Nazo's Chaotic Blast after attempting to stop him directly.]]
* EvilKnockoff: Eggman created robotic versions of Nazo (aptly named "Metal Nazo") for Sonic and gang to fight when they board the Super Egg Carrier.
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: [[spoiler:After Nazo absorbs the Master Emerald's power despite Knuckles claiming that it should be impossible for a living creature, Tails asks Eggman about the source of Nazo's cybernetic implants. Eggman casually states that they came from [[VideoGameSonic3AndKnuckes Mecha Sonic]] before realizing how badly he screwed up.]]
* FanEdit: While the plans for a fully animated sequel weren’t realized, Chakra-X [[https://x.com/chakraxcartoons/status/1740158040073240877?s=46&t=kqtP_MaP1cMNxzhegtg36Q gave his blessing]] for other animators to fully animate the scenes from the released animatic.
* HereWeGoAgain: Sonic's reaction to Knuckles having the Master Emerald stolen from him once again.
--> '''Sonic''': One job! You have ''one'' job, Knuckles! [''groans''] How'd he steal it ''this'' time?
* LivingBattery: [[spoiler:Nazo has become this to the Super Egg Carrier, and is also used as fuel for the Metal Nazos. It doesn't last long]].
* MythologyGag:
** [[spoiler:Nazo's new "Chaos Nazo" SuperMode is [[EmeraldPower green in color]]; the same color as the ''original'' design for his perfect form used way back in Chakra-X's ''Power of Nazo'' flash animation, the original inspiration for ''Nazo Unleashed'' proper.]]
** Eggman's army of Metal Nazos is very similar to the [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics Archie Comics]] and ''ComicBook/SonicTheComic'' plot where Sonic had to contend with an army of Metal Sonics.
** [[spoiler:Chaos Nazo]] references the famous exchange between Metal Sonic and Sonic from ''Anime/SonicTheHedgehogTheMovie'', as he brings a Metal Nazo to its knees.
--->[[spoiler:'''Chaos Nazo''': My power gave you life, and your machines gave me mine...]] Strange, ''isn't it?!''
** [[spoiler:Eggman says [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure "Get a load of this!"]] as he attacks Chaos Nazo, only for Nazo to unleash Chaotic Blast. The last thing the doctor says before the attack envelops him is a simple [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure2 "Yosh."]]]]
* OriginalFlavor: Compared to the original, ''The Wrath of Nazo'' tones down the ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' influence that was used in the original to make it feel more like something from the ''Sonic'' games' canon instead. That said, there are still some ''DBZ''-esque fights and influences, such as Nazo's BreathWeapon, modeled after something out of ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly''.
* PaperThinDisguise: If Knuckles flashback is anything to go by, Eggman used one to steal the Master Emerald from him... ''Again''. Needless to say, Sonic and Tails are less than impressed.
* PowerNullifier: [[spoiler:Using the Master Emerald, Knuckles prevents Chaos Nazo from using Chaos Control to follow after the heroes as they go to Angel Island.]]
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: A pretty simple one for Nazo once he [[spoiler:realizes he can now directly draw power from the Master Emerald.]]
-->'''Nazo:''' "Hehehe... ''[[HesBack I'm back.]]''"
* RidingTheBomb: Sonic does this with one of Eggman's AirborneMooks, using the missile it fired at him [[HoistByHisOwnPetard to take him out]].
* SceneryPorn: While the original was famous for its animation, the backgrounds usually consisted of generic mountain and desert scenery. The sequel, however, shows just how far Chakra-X has come as an artist, possessing a great amount of depth and variation, easily on par with that of an animated movie.
* SpeedBlitz: While present in the original trilogy too, Chakra-X has stated he wants to put far more emphasis on the ''Sonic'' side of things instead of the obvious [=DBZ=]-influenced fights of the original, and wants to focus more on Sonic's natural abilities more than [[BeamSpam energy-blasting]], RapidFireFisticuffs action.
* SuperMode:
** Hey, it wouldn't be an official sequel without this trope. In the teaser alone, the trio already collected the Chaos Emeralds before going after the Egg Carrier, and Sonic is more than willing to use them to take out the ships defenses. When Shadow arrives, both he and Sonic enter their Super States to fight off the Metal Nazo army.
** If the voice acting trailer is also anything to go by, [[spoiler:Nazo is also going to get another SuperMode that excels passed his "perfect" form. Nazo himself dubs the form "Chaos Nazo" during Part 1.]]
* VocalEvolution: While the game characters (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Tails) are all voiced by new actors that emulated the contemporary cast heard in the ''Sonic'' franchise around the mid-to-late-2010s and early 2020s, Nazo's original voice actor, Edwyn Tiong, reprises his role. His voice for Nazo in ''Nazo Unleashed'' was a smooth tenor, though a bit unrefined and rough in places. Tiong's voice for Nazo in ''Wrath of Nazo'' is much clearer and is closer to the actor's natural voice, especially after the years of experience that Tiong had gained over the years. Comparing his performances between ''Nazo Unleashed'' and ''Wrath of Nazo'' can show how much Nazo's voice has evolved.
* TheWorfEffect:
** Eggman claims that the Metal Nazo badniks are just as strong as the original, and to their credit, [[spoiler:one of them does overpower a freshly revived Nazo. But once he absorbs the power of the Master Emerald and becomes Chaos Nazo, he easily tears through his robotic doppelgängers.]]
** [[spoiler:Super Sonic stood even less of a chance against Chaos Nazo than he did against Perfect Nazo, as he is immediately zapped out of his super form when he attempts to rush him. If Nazo's reaction and words are anything to go by, that wasn't even on purpose due to him not being in control of his powers.]]
