[[WMG: The people of the Island keep Clifford on because he makes a good tourist attraction.]]
Emily Elizabeth just lets her dog go anywhere he wants, rarely commands or disciplines her dog beyond doing things for herself (like giving her rides or helping her with something). [[FreeRangeChildren Free Range Dog]] here would provide the many tourists that come to the island for being a big red dog.

[[WMG: Emily Elizabeth is a vain bitch.]]
Clifford's dog house has a wall almost entirely filled with pictures of E.E. He couldn't have put them, since they're held on by nails. Sure, E.E. probably wouldn't be using hammer and nails, but she could have prompted them being put in.
* Her parents bought the frames and nailed the nails for the frames inside his house but left Emily E in charge of decorating the place. She could have put pictures of everyone they know in town (or knew when he was a puppy) but she didn’t.
** What I wonder is why no one ever told Emily E how weird it was that most of the pictures in Clifford’s house were of her, yes he’s her dog but still?
** Hey, hey, whoa, whoa, we see Emily being a nice kid in every single episode and still you take the worst conclusion off the bat? There's a far better explanation, anyhow. We know Clifford misses Emily Elizabeth if she's gone even for a single day. Putting up pictures of her is the best way to make sure that he doesn't get lonely. And Emily Elizabeth does go out of her way ''a lot'' for Clifford, as the ''Heartwarming'' page points out:
-->Emily goes out of her way to feed her dog, give him baths (tasks that are, considering his size, really demanding), read bedtime stories to him, roam around the island with him, and is extremely patient with him whenever he messes up.
In the TV series, she occasionally warns Clifford about dangers such as stinkweed and does read to him every episode; but either he's doing whatever he wants wherever he wants without the girl in sight, or E.E. is using him for rides or to help her with problems. She just uses Clifford for her convenience and lets him do whatever when she's bored.
* Emily E is in school and her parents run a shop together so they can’t be around Clifford 24/7. But you’d think Emily would ask people to watch Clifford for her while she’s in school or that her parents would hire someone to watch Clifford while he hangs out with his friends.
** Emily can have a life, but she can’t exactly leave her dog alone so often, she lost that privilege when she made him grow up into a big red dog. Also Emily E if your bored play with your dog!

* As for him giving her rides well... She can’t exactly walk Clifford in the traditional way, so her riding Clifford everywhere in town every day is probably the best she can do to give him the supervised exercise he needs.
** Meanwhile the fact Emily E gets to be lazy while she rides on Clifford all over town, every day is just a bonus for her.
*** I hope she gives Clifford a treat when she lets a friend ride on him with her.
*** Ummm, have you seen Clifford in relation to Emily Elizabeth? It's like an oxpecker on a rhino. This is not even a slightly difficult task, and I do not see a dog who isn't genuinely happy to carry EE around once in a while. Also, EE is apparently either "nowhere in sight" or "riding Clifford all the time". The answer is that sometimes she rides Clifford (with a friend it's with two oxpeckers on a rhino) and sometimes she lets him play with his doggy friends. It's a balanced and healthy relationship.
* Clifford should of gotten top billing for playing the bean stock in the school play last minute he saved their asses and he had to paint his tail. Let’s hope he at least got a bone.

Clifford ''has'' to be free-range -- he's that big a a big red dog. But E.E. still shows no care or remorse for what he does.

** To nail the message home, Emily Elizabeth is played by Creator/GreyDeLisle, known for playing roles of characters that are just that.

[[WMG: Despite the more modern appearance, the show is set in the same time period as the original books]]
Clifford has since died. His ass-cheeks have been used to make the babushkas worn by Hummel figurines.
* Could explain why they're so evil. How would you like to be made from a dog's ass?

[[WMG: Daffodil died sometime between Puppy Days and the main series]]
Either that memory relates to Clifford trying to forget most of his puppy years, or he just forgot (he was the equivalent of 3 - 6 around that time and is now an adult). Daffodil felt rejected and became depressed, which made her sick and that let to her dying or she died due to dehydration/starvation/being put down.

Or possibly, considering rabbits' lifespan compared to dogs', she died of old age.

* It's not impossible that Daffodil's death may have been the incentive for Clifford's growth. There is an episode (and book) where Emily Elizabeth was worried about the tiny Clifford's well being and wanted her puppy to be healthy and grow. Emily E may have been already traumatized about losing one pet, Daffodil, a pet she has probably known all her life, which would have sparked concerns about her new puppy, Clifford.

** Then again, Emily Elizabeth looks pretty much the same as she did in ''Puppy Days'' as she does in the main series, so it’s possible less time had passed between the shows, unless, Daffodil was, as I would put it, "old to begin with" and died some time before, considering that rabbits tend to live for about 9-12 years and Emily Elizabeth is still a kid, however, we don't know how old she's supposed to be.
** Maybe the parents bought Daffodil for themselves before Emily E was born, and Emily E worried that Daffodil was sad, so she asked for a puppy so Daffodil wouldn’t be lonely anymore. Clifford being around gave Daffodil a few more good years to live also took Emily E’s mind off of her health so she could enjoy both pets, until Clifford grew up and Daffodil “moved to a nice farm”.
** Most likely, Daffodil is still alive, but lives in Emily Elizabeth's room, where Clifford can't fit. And while Clifford may have since forgotten her, she never has...
Clifford could remember her but be scared to talk about her with his friends because he’s worried about “going to live on a farm” like she did. He doesn’t want to live away from his friends. He doesn’t know that however that Daffodil was given better vet care near the farm she lived on and for Clifford’s birthday she’s coming back to live with him and Emily E on Birdwell Island.
* Sheesh, everyone here is so dark. Emily Elizabeth could have just given Daffodil to one of her friends, like Nina or Shun, when Clifford got so big that he required more attention and care, or even just when they moved. It's not unheard of for people to give their pets to trusted friends if they're moving somewhere they can't take the pet along to, for whatever reason.

[[WMG: Clifford was neutered in a expensive operation involving many vets, gallons of anesthetic and chainsaws. He is given drugs in his food to suppress ANY sexual behavior.]]
Birdwell island doesn't need Clifford humping ''anything'', as dogs do. And they only female dog he knows is Cleo... and that would be beyond {{Squick}} and into NightmareFuel.
* He was probably neutered as a puppy, just like regular dogs usually are.
* If he wasn’t neutered as a puppy, then it’s possible that Clifford is Asexual, his friends get crushes, and get urges (we don’t see) while he doesn’t get any and that saves him from the nightmare being neutered in a way that would traumatize him, Emily E and vets everywhere for life.

[[WMG: Clifford is a time lord]]
And his gigantic size is his Tardis.

[[WMG: The whole series is a result of Mr. Hinkle from {{WesternAnimation/Caillou}} snorting too much coke.]]
A giant big red dog. Really?
* Well you would be on coke too if you were in the {{WesternAnimation/Caillou}} universe.

[[WMG: Love didn't make Clifford grow.]]
The city the Howards lived in just happened to have very, very poor standards regarding the disposal of radioactive waste (so poor that [[WesternAnimation/CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers Sly Sludge]] was probably in charge). Clifford is a mutant, not the product of love, but since he's an animal he has no place at [[ComicBook/XMen Xavier's]].
* Alternatively, Clifford ''is'' a mutant, but it's genetics, not nuclear waste. Maybe he has the dog version of the X-factor gene.

[[WMG: The show exists in the same universe as the [[WesternAnimation/HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse2002 2002 He-Man reboot]].]]
They're both from Mike Young Porductions, and have Cam Clarke on their voice casts. A version of Gwildor invents the Cosmic Key ala the [[Film/MastersOfTheUniverse 1987 film]] and it accidentally summons Clifford, Emily and the others to Eternia. Emily ends up becoming this continuity's version of [[WesternAnimation/SheRaPrincessOfPower She-Ra]] with Clifford as her battle steed (gaining armor similar to Battle Cat), helping to defend Etheria against Hordak.
[[WMG:George Wolfsbottom, the villain of the Clifford's Really Big Movie is the person writing most of the theories from this page.]]
That would explain the bizarre hatred towards Emily Elizabeth from some of those theories.
[[WMG: "Little Clifford"'s flashback is told as Emily Elizabeth remembers it, not as it actually happened.]]
The best explanation is a retcon, but out of fondness for both the 2000's series and ''Puppy Days'' (I saw both growing up) I'll try to reconcile the two. The scene where EE's stuffed animal falls on Clifford and where Clifford attempts to crawl into his dog bowl are both pretty close to two scenes from Puppy Day's intro-the latter an almost exact recreation. The stuffed animal is different, and the bowl scene in PD's intro ends with Clifford trying again and succeeding. And of course, the lack of Daffodil. The most likely and saddest explanation is that Daffodil died between the two series. EE is, in the episode, doing a report on her ''favorite'' memory, and thinking about her beloved dead rabbit probably doesn't really fit with that whole theme. Anyway, The scenes that match are probably the most accurate memories. Everything is more or less EE's best recollection of events. Everything else is just a collage of memories.
