* Beginning his life as a child of mixed ancestry, he lost his mother at a young age, and his father became an abusive alcoholic, causing him life-lasting self-image issues, distrust towards others, and desire to hide his heritage. A classmate caused him crippling injury and learned of his circumstances, but never told anybody like he should have. Having never been treated kindly or learned healthy coping methods, he never had many friends aside from twondimwits who were more akin to followers than equal comrades. When he grew older he dreamed of presidency, but his dimwitted friends laughed at him because their country was a monarchy run by a bloodthirty king willing to execute even young children. He didn't care and attempted his best to prepare, as the old king would soon die and his son, who never wanted the crown, would propably abdicate. He miscalculated, as the new king, uninterested as he was in politics, didn't plan on abdicating but wasted money and behaved like a spoiled child, plunging the whole nation into economical deppression and causing the unemployment rates to skyrocket. Our hero decided the incompetent king must be ousted for power and for that he needed support, so he went to his old classmate, asking to borrow some money and promising to repay him manyfold. The classmate, despite having had his charity money stolen and getting screwed over by the royal court, refused and insulted him. He shortly after received the money he needed from an old associate, and formed a political party, gaining a skyrocketing support and openly speaking about deposing the king and taking his place, which would save the country from a certain doom. The decadent ministers grew worried of losing their power, but the irresponsible king still didn't understand the gravity of the situation, and nothing was done. As his power was growing, he kept all his promises and employed thousands. He was approached by the classmate who had previously rejected him. For a moment he thought the man had seen the light and decided to join him, but the classmate was still a vehement monarchist and had only come to insult him and tell him what he was doing was wrong. After failing to negotiate a deal with the archbishop for the church to support him, our hero went forwards anyway, taking over the land in a bloodless coup and exiling the king, who still didn't understand his own situation, but left peacefully. Simultaneously, the monarchist classmate had left the country with a ragtag group of other reactionaries, and reunited with his king in the neighboring nation, where they conspired to overthrow our hero and reinstate the monarchy. The classmate and the colonel crossed the border illegally back to their home country, infiltrated the palace, humiliated him and revealed his mixed ancestry to the majority of people in the palace, and stole his government's funds, making his support dwindle and forcing him to escape as the king was returned to power. Even his trusted lieutenant abandoned him to evade capture, leaving him all alone. He later becomes a seemingly succesful and trusted, though not very well-known, businessman. His business accidentally caused a an inconvenience to the reviously mentioned classmate, but he can't be blamed as he didn't even know he would be there, though the man did have an unpleasant habit of sticking his nose in everybody's business. No further damage was done, though, as the classmate solved the issue and never knew he was involved. However, our hero became addicted to gambling and lost everything, sinking down to a hired saboteur to corrupt businessmen, but was foiled by the classmate at every turn, despite the fact he was only trying to pay his debts. He heard that the incompetent king was finally going to abdicate and arrange presidential elections, he returned to his native country despite the risk to his life and freedom, empovered by a seer promising him he had a chance, trusting his old supporters to have his back. The classmate, though, immediately set out to discredit him and his campaign without a shred of evidence. Out of despair at the owerwhelming odds against him, our hero lowered himself into sabotage, the results of which he immediately fixed and attempted to cover up, but his actions were exposed right during the vote counting, by a childhood friend he had trusted his whole life, resulting in his downfall. Only for him to learn that he would have lost anyway, driving him into more gambling in his forced exile. He only wanted to keep gambling and live peacefully in exile, having lost his faith in his own ideology, but his debts forced him to resort to pretty theft and sell his services as a hirable saboteur to a corrupt businessman to pay his debts and avoid death at the hands of the casino owner's henchmen. But he was foiled at every turn and left to his fate by the same classmate, who even attempted to drown him. For all he had done for his countrymen, he was thrown in jail by the new government, but his lieutenant returned to him and risked himself helping him escape. At this point, he only wanted to leave the country and the classmate and everything else behind him, and, after the classmate had a falling-out with his girlfriend, took the girlfriend with him. The classmate went into rage and hefted a gun, intending to kill our hero right then and there, only saved by the classmate's obsession with a woman who had broken up with him. As the classmate rushed to find his ex, our hero escaped, only to be arrested again and to fall into despair. We never know what ultimately became of him. At first the hero was successful in the initial duel for the throne, but his cousin returned and mortally wounded him in the next duel. However his cousin, though still thinking that he was in the right, saw that the hero was in the right and their country should no longer hide in neutrality, and lets our hero die peacefully, keeping him company in his last moments. 159* A lonely and confused child, taken and trapped on a spaceship and hunted by its xenophobic alien owners. A final escape attempt is thwarted by the aliens' queen, who remorselessly kills the child. [[spoiler: The Xenomorph, ''Film/{{Alien}}'']]
* A young man is sent on a quest to acquire a jewel by a mentor-figure and promised a kingdom should he succeed. For help, he is given a magic wand but isn't told that the jewel's owners will use any means necessary to regain it. And this mentor-figure isn't looking terribly trustworthy either... 161* They had a solution to overpopulation, but it was ruined and now, with famine looming, their desperation is leading to infighting and forcing a few into dangerous alliances. [[spoiler: The Wraith, ''Series/StargateAtlantis'']]
* This set of triplets comprises of a girl who introduced a system of government - fair, just government - to a CrapsackWorld (and managed to keep everyone out of the dangerous areas) and then sets up her cousins after an unexpected family reunion, her brother who can't stop his other cousin harassing him, and her other brother who got to stay with another of their cousins until WhatMeasureIsANonCute kicked in and he got accused of anti-social behaviour and jailed. His family does nothing to help, forcing him to solve the problem entirely himself, following which his family lies, cheats, and plays with the legal system to ensure he never gets any of his rightful respect. 166[[folder:Osric]]
* A wise and powerful general who was determined to bring an end to the wars that had plagued his homeland for decades, in contrast to his peers, who just wished to fight and conquer for themselves. Whist merciless to the warlords who kept the land divided and blood-stained, he always showed great regard for the troops themselves, the people who made up the land, who were, after all, just following orders. His dedication and vision earned him numerous followers who would give their lives for him and his cause. [[spoiler: Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ''Sengoku Basara''.]]
* A dedicated mother with an abusive, philandering husband who cries out another woman's name during their first night together; although she, too, is unfaithful to their marriage, at least it's with someone she truly loves, rather than whatever pretty face suits her on any particular night. She dedicates her entire life to [[ScrewDestiny defying a prophecy]] that stated that all her children would be killed. Moreover, she is discriminated against, even by her own father, because of her sex, when, in fact, she is convinced she is at least as competent as any of the men she's known. [[spoiler: Cersei Lannister, ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire''.]]
* A [[MagnificentBastard magnificent]] genius who has kept his kingdom's coffers liquid for years despite his king's propensity for spending lavishly, even frivolously. He works to ensure that he acquires as much power as possible - a more noble goal than it at first sounds when you realise that he's possibly the most competent person in the series, certainly more so than the lackwits and fools who currently rule. Moreover, when the elder daughter of the love of his life, who had many years ago abandoned him for not one, but two subsequent other men, is separated from her mother and held hostage, he organises for her to be rescued, after which he takes her under his own protection, as her entire family is, by this point, presumed dead. [[spoiler: Petyr Baelish, ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire''.]]
* After his kind discovers an energy source that defies the Law of Conservation of Energy, he and his fellows set out to harvest that source in order to stave off the heat death of the universe. The side-effects of this process are negligible enough to be unnoticeable even on a national scale, let alone a global or universal scale. Scrupulously honest, there's no evidence that he's ever told a lie. Finally, he goes about his business with an unfailingly cheerful demeanour. Oh, and he [[MemeticMutation really, really loves entropy. Maybe you've heard of it?]] [[spoiler: Kyuubey, ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''.]]
** All she wants is a plate of cheese. [[spoiler: Charlotte, ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''.]]
* A young prince who actively implements his father's policies in the province he has been charged with governing. He is also a dedicated patron of the arts and, indeed, an artist himself, and beloved of the most significant section of his people. Moreover, he loves his family dearly, particularly a certain half-brother and half-sister of his (despite the fact that he always lost to that same half-brother, several years his junior, at chess), whose tragic deaths motivate him for the rest of his life. Sadly found himself in over his head after a group of terrorists stole a top-secret research project, though he did his best to recover the project and minimise its exposure to the general populace. At this point, though, he was assassinated by a masked terrorist who went on to effectively destroy the prince's entire nation. [[spoiler: Clovis la Britannia, ''Anime/CodeGeass''.]]
* A highly talented young man who found his country plunged into chaos and civil war by the corruption and incompetence of the ruling classes. Making the most for himself in this time of strife, he rose from being an humble civil servant to being the most powerful figure in the land, holding the second-highest office of state, though he made a point of never going so far as to usurp the head of state's own office. A dedicated meritocrat, he made a point of placing ability above all else in his subordinates, and made sure always to treat them well and reward their successes. In a similar vein, he took a supremely even-handed approach to justice, allowing no familial or political connections to excuse a law-breaker of punishment. He could very arguably have reunited the land in his own lifetime, thus sparing it several more generations of ruinous civil war, but he was thwarted by an insignificant scion of the imperial family who believed that, just because he had some imperial blood in his veins, he was more suited to ruling the land, even though, by the same argument, there were numerous closer relatives alive who should've have precedence over him, along with the jumped-up second son of a regional governor who never demonstrated any vision for uniting the land. After his death, he was unfairly vilified for generations afterwards, even, to some extent, to this day. [[spoiler: Cao Cao, ''Literature/RomanceOfTheThreeKingdoms''.]]
* A prodigy who sacrifices his entire career in the military and, ultimately, his life, in order to avenge the torture and rape of his best friend (and possible {{Love Interest|s}}). Always has a smile on his face. Went out trying to assassinate the BigBad of the series, and arguably came closer to doing so than anyone else to date. [[spoiler: Ichimaru Gin, ''Manga/{{Bleach}}''.]]
* An incredibly talented young man whose entire life was centred around self-improvement. Beloved of most of his colleagues, particularly his immediate subordinate, for his ineffably gentle and scholarly manner. Ultimately [[DefectorFromDecadence defected]] from the corrupt, militarist government of his home in order to spread the gifts of sentience and order to a race of beings the aforementioned militarist government have long exterminated on sight. Was, in the end, defeated by the machinations of a fellow scientist with good cause to be jealous, whose only other motivation was [[StatusQuoIsGod the preservation of the status quo]]; he fittingly [[ShutUpHannibal calls said fellow scientist out]] on this. Though speculated by TheHero to be extremely lonely, he never let this show and maintains a calm, pleasant demeanour almost to the end. [[spoiler: Aizen Sousuke, again of ''Manga/{{Bleach}}''.]]
* A brilliant young man who seized power in a virtually bloodless coup d'état with the intention of abolishing the imperialist, SocialDarwinist regime that had previously prevailed in TheEmpire which spanned roughly a third of the world's land surface; despite fierce resistance from its aristocracy, he succeeded. Eventually managed to unite the entire world under his rule, thus ending the wars that had plagued it for centuries, only to be assassinated at the height of his power by a terrorist previously presumed dead.
