-> Have you ever had that dream of starting a new life? With friends, family, celebrities, or even a bounty hunter. Sha la la la la, island dreams! Real life is too small to contain your dreams. That's why the world needs Tomodachi Life.

Tomodachi is a series of simulation games by Creator/Nintendo. The series first started in 2009 when Tomodachi Collection was released for the Platform/NintendoDS in Japan. The second game, titled Tomodachi Collection: New Life in Japan, and the first one to receive an international release, as Tomodachi Life, was released for the UsefulNotes/Nintendo3DS.

However, what has really given it such a cult following is its plain weirdness. It's quite difficult to describe how strange this game gets if you haven't played it, but the UsefulNotes/Miis in your game can, amongst other things, compete in rap battles against each other, melt into gray puddles when they eat the food they hate the most, and face off in an RPG-style BossBattle against a Platform/VirtualBoy. ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext.

----
!!This series provides examples of:

* AccentUponTheWrongSyllable: Due to the game using what is basically a text-to-speech program, it's quite common for the game to pronounce names and some words completely different from how they are usually pronounced. For example, Groose (pronounced with a long sound "O") is pronounced as "Grass" ("ah" sound), making it sound like the game is using a British accent for a completely different word. You can correct this by having the game sound out the words phonetically, but you can also choose to make it even more mangled for some added hiliarity. The German, French, and Italian versions of the game also run into the same issue if you have the game use English words since the text-to-speech program in those languages wasn't made with English in mind.
* AerithAndBob: Depending on the version you're playing, and if you have Miis with exotic or non-native names in your save, the parents will always suggest giving their newborns otherwise basic names that under most circumstances will not fit into whatever nationality they originated from.Such as a Japanese family suggesting English names for their children.
* AirplaneArms: One or more Miis can sometimes be seen doing this in their apartment.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: You can pet a Mii atop their head, which will raise their happiness by a small chunk with a caption "It looks like [they] really liked that!"
* AloneAmongTheCouples: If there are an unequal number of male and female Miis in an age group and every Mii of the opposite gender in said age group is in a relationship, the lone Mii not in a relationship will be miserable enough that they'll request you use a Kid-o-matic or Age-o-matic on them in the hopes of finding love in another age group.
* AmicableExes: Miis that broke up in the past still have connections with their exes, and it's very possible that they can be on good terms. Heck, the highest friendship level between exes is "Still friends." Give them enough time and the Miis that were each other's exes will become "Friends" with each other and their statuses as each other's exes will disappear. Sometimes you'll get a cutscene of a couple thanking each other for the time spent together and mutually end their romantic relationship, all while still retaining their happiness. The former couple will revert back to Friends again, but they will not be labeled as exes. Also, very rarely, they may start to miss each other and want to get back together again.
* AndYourRewardIsClothes: Once a Mii reaches level 20, you can give them a copy of any hat or clothing you've previously collected, at no cost.
* AntiFrustrationFeatures: During the baby minigames, if you don't make enough progress to cheer the baby up within a moderate time frame, the game will allow you to give up and the parent will thank you for trying and give you the reward anyway.
* AntiPoopSocking:
** Late at night, Miis may occasionally tell you to go to sleep when you tap their speech bubbles.
** Inverted by Miis occasionally saying "I'm not sleepy at all tonight" or "I'm gonna stay up all night tonight!"
** Once all your Miis have gone to bed for the night, you might as well shut the game off since there's pretty much nothing of substance you can do until they wake up the next morning (which happens in real time); as an example, islander donations aren't distributed until 5 AM and the Morning Market doesn't start until 6:30 AM.
** The save button flashes when you've played over an hour or so, but that's also so you don't lose your progress.
* ArbitraryHeadcountLimit: Apartments and Mii accessible locations are limited to four present Miis at a time each. In Collection, this was limited to two.
* ArbitrarySkepticism: In the Mii News reports. Flying objects/Miis? It happens. Cats with Mii heads? Perfectly normal. Bird with Mii head? Rare, but definitely real. Mii centaurs? Clearly this photo has been doctored.
* ArtificialBrilliance: The Miis are autonomous to the extent that they're willing to do things that one might not expect while playing the game, such as changing what piece of clothing they're wearing at the moment on their own accord or eat something off-screen.
* ArtificialStupidity:
** Some of the problems Miis have are juvenile, such as asking for new clothes/hats/interiors when they were given new clothes/hats/interiors only a few days prior (and in some cases, several hours before), to confirm if they can keep a certain catchphrase you gave them (which is unnecessary since you can adjust them yourself once a Mii has learned them Unless you're playing the original Tomodachi Collection which has no such quick-edit feature for the emotional catchphrases.), ask you to have a look at a "funny face", listen to their impression of another Mii, or ask to have you take a look inside their head or stomach. There's also the occasional questions a Mii will ask a player, which only yield a very small amount of Happiness and cash when answered ($3 on average).
** Miis may occasionally attempt to get together with people they already tried to only to lose to a rival, and are just as despondent to learn they're taken as they would be if they had no way of knowing.
** If the Mii was an ex to someone who's now married, they may ask the player if they could try to get back together. Even if you say no and they appear to fully agree with your words, they'll still bother trying to ask again a few days later. If you say they should get back together, and the person they want to re-hook up with refuses or doesn't show up at all, the Mii may try to ask again for a reunion sometime later.
** Miis eat whatever food you give them (provided there's room in their stomach for it), even if it's something they hate; this includes their Worst/Worst Ever foods and all of the trash foods. They also will accept outfits, hats and interiors that they'd otherwise flat out dislike and lower their Happiness slightly. They can even choose to change back into outfits they hate on their own.
** In the "Vs. Match" minigame in which the Mii plays a memory game against the player, they will sometimes not choose two matching cards even if they had been both revealed in previous rounds.
* AsideGlance: Sometimes Miis who wake up from a dream will just turn and stare at you before they fall back to sleep.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Some items, in particular the jewel dress and "Golden" interior, are beautiful lavish items that everyone should love but are also 1) ridiculously exorbitantIn the North American version, the costs are $9,900 for the jewel dress and $20,000 for the "Golden" interior. For perspective, each of those are worth more than nine copies of the highest-selling treasure in the game. and 2) just one choice among hundreds, most of which are pretty good and much, much cheaper.
* BabiesEverAfter: Can happen after Miis get married, and seems to be the ultimate goal of the game. You can choose to convert them to a normal resident after they grow up or send them off to travel to other players' islands via [=StreetPass=].
* BareFistedMonk: The class Confident Miis have in Tomodachi Quest. They come with two basically identical standard attacks. They are unarmed, but have a higher critical hit rate than other classes.
* BarefootPoverty: The Vagabond Outfit is a ragged, tattered dress with no shoes.
* BattleRapping: A Rap Battle event occurs every day in the evening at the fountain, where two randomly chosen Miis engage in a rhyming battle, complete with (G-rated) insults and boasting. Whoever fails to rhyme is the loser. This event is not present in the original Japanese version (which has a Word Chain tournament instead), but the European version includes both events.
* BeachEpisode: One of the scenes in the breakup flashback depicts the couple playing with each other on the beach wearing swimwear (even if the Miis did not own the item in-game). Miis can also visit the beach in the game, although they will not automatically change into swimwear (even if they had it in their inventory).
* BearsAreBadNews:
** The most common of the three "argument resolve failure" flashbacks your Miis can have involves them playing tug-o-war with a toy bearWith the head of another Mii. with elastic limbs. It can even be done with two adults.
** One news report involves a Mii "narrowly avoiding an encounter with two bears in the park" (they were actually just statues).
* BestFriend:
** One of the friends a Mii makes, considered to be the best of them all.
** If a huge fight breaks out, a randomly chosen third Mii can be brought in to try and resolve it; the third Mii is a mutual friend of both of the fighters, and can sometimes be the best friend of one of them.
* BigNever: Miis sometimes say these during fights.
* BigNo: In the "True Love" dream, two random food items announce that they are going to get married, upon which the player picks up the one on the right. The one on the left screams, "[food item], noooooooo!"
* BigWhat:
** In the "Unbelievable" dream, the reaction a Mii gets from the "fact" can either be this or a Big "No Way!". Complete with their face popping out of their head, flying into outer space, and then back.
** Miis can say this during certain conversations at the café, or in a few things to say upon tapping their speech bubble.
* BigWordShout: Giving a Mii their super all-time favorite food will cause them to make a "Emoticon :O" face and impossibly blast into space like a rocket, while screaming "YUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!"
* BigYes: This is what a female Mii says to her sweetheart while accepting his proposal at the train station.
* BlackMage: The class Independent Miis have in Tomodachi Quest. They come with a weak standard attack and fire magic that can be used up to six times that does about as much damage as a critical hit from any other class and can't miss. They carry a red-tipped staff.
* BlahBlahBlah:
** Sometimes, a Mii will ask you if they can gush about their spouse or child. If you allow the Mii to do so, their rambling eventually deteriorates into this as the FastForwardGag kicks in, going so fast that you're unable to hear what the Mii has to say about said person, while the text box simply displays this repeatedly.
** This is a placeholder if a Mii decides to do an impression of someone who doesn't have any catchphrases registered in the North American version.
* BlatantLies:
** Occasionally the News will report that a Mii is hibernating for the winter and that you won't be able to contact them until spring. They are clearly still available even that same day.
* BlindShoulderToss: When a Mii uses the metal detector, they might find a bottle cap or another junk item, make a sad expression, and throw it behind them.
* BloodlessCarnage: "Fighting" in Tomodachi Life is represented by two Miis throwing Treasures at one another, with the Treasures phasing through each of their bodies and not dealing any form of pain to the Mii that gets hit.
* BouquetToss: Done in the last scene of a wedding, where the bride tosses her bouquet up to the screen as the view becomes a photo.
* Bowdlerize:
** Couples never kiss each other, nor do the Miis ever hug, due to the target audience. They also shorten the wedding sequence to only include the reception.
** A divorce plays out like a regular sweetheart breakup. In real life, divorces are serious and more complex.
* BrandX:
** Redfurt, the name of which can be found on the café window, several posters and banners in some of the apartments, and even various items of clothing. The name is a combination of Redmond, the location of Nintendo of America, and Frankfurt, the location of Nintendo of Europe.
** Mii WEAR gets a subtle one as a clothing brand.
* BreakTheCutie: Even the most innocent-looking or seemingly fun-loving of Miis can wind up in sudden fights due to the random nature of the game. And they're just as vulnerable to rejected apologies as any other Mii.
* BrickJoke:
** Sometimes if a visiting traveler is on the island, a Mii will tell the player they're going to find a seashell to give them as a keepsake. If you talk to either of those travelers at the port, they will say a Mii gave them a seashell as a gift.
** If you ask a Mii to be cute when going to confess their feelings in a classroom, they will say, "You're my favorite subject in the whole world. Oh, won't you be my sweet potato?". Later when the sweethearts got married, one of the things the husband might say is, "I love coming home and finding my sweet potato waiting for me."
** If two Miis are dating, one thing one of the sweethearts would say is "The photo I took with [Sweetheart] is my new favorite treasure." If one of the Miis uses a disposable camera to take a picture of the sweethearts, one photo might be of the sweethearts taking a picture of themselves, which could refer to the photo mentioned in the dialogue.
** The boy-to-girl "romantic" and girl-to-boy "singing" confessions at the beach feature lines of the girl being the boy's "mermaid".
** Sometimes a Mii would ask the player how they would describe them in one word. If the player picks "gorgeous", the Mii will say, "You're just trying to make me blush! It won't work!". At a proposal in the restaurant, the boyfriend would say, "You look gorgeous tonight," and the girlfriend responds with "Aww, thanks! You're making me blush, hee hee!". Also, one thing a Mii could say in its sleep is "Stop saying that, you're making me blush!".
* ButThouMust:
** When you get a phone call, you have no choice but to answer it and get whisked away to the home of the Mii that called you. This becomes extremely jarring when a certain event occurs and you want some of the action and you're suddenly interrupted by a Mii because their baby's crying, they got a letter from their traveling child, or the child returned to their house to say hello and drop off a Special Food. The letter portion is the longest-lasting of the there three, and you cannot skip the parents reading it, compared to the crying child where you can just decline the Mii's request for help, and not view the traveler eating/taking a nap when he/she visits. Seconds before a Mii tries to call you for any reason whatsoever, you won't be able to touch any of the locations on the bottom screen, with a crying baby call not giving you any chance to use the touch screen on the overworld map at all.
** Every time a Mii levels up, you have to give them a present, no matter what.
** When a Mii wants to propose, they will ask the player for help with popping the question at the right moment. The player's response options are "No problem!" and "Say that again?" (followed by the instructions being repeated)
* ButNowIMustGo:
** In the breakup cutscenes, after the Mii tells their partner they should go back to being just friends, they will look very disappointed and hangs their head as the first Mii immediately makes their exit.
** If the player fails at a proposal (they miss three times causing all three hearts to break), the sweetheart will say they have to leave in various ways, and the proposer will reluctantly accept. Sometimes at the train station, the sweetheart will leave on the train as the proposer waves dejectedly. Fortunately, in contrast to a lot of other relation-related events, the Mii attempting the proposal doesn't become sad after this and merely mentions wanting to try again in the future.
** Right after one of your travelers comes home and gives a special food, they announce they have to go back to traveling,Unless they tell you a message the other island sent and they leveled up. but before they do you can have them have a snack as their parents watch or have them take a nap in their parents' bed. They can only do each of these once before they leave.
* ByThePowerOfGreyskull: In the dream sequence called "Transform" or "Superhero",Depending on whenever you're playing the European or North American version, respectively. the Mii will say "By the power of [random object]!" before transforming into a superhero.
* CallBack:
** To itself: There are a number of interiors that show the location of events in the game including "Classroom", "Skyscraper", and "Train" (various confession/proposal/age changing scenes), "Wedding" (weddings), "Kitchen" (cooking with the frying pan) and even "Empty" (the appearance of the apartment before anyone moves in, minus the door).
** To Tomodachi Collection: One of the dreams (exclusive to the Japanese version) shows the island as it appeared in said game, and there are several songs from that game that appear in Life.
** A short callback to childhood may happen; a grown Mii child may mention the books their mom used to read them or their mother singing them to sleep. This references portions of the child's time growing up, where the mother (sometimes the father) reads them a book or tries to get them to stop crying if they wake up while they're sleeping.
* TheCameo: In the international Nintendo Directs, Zelda, Peach, Samus, the Nintendo staff, and Link.
* CampStraight: It's possible to give male Miis items normally associated with femininity, like a Ballet Manual or a Beauty Kit. They're willing to use them just fine, to the point that they can sometimes be seen with girlish makeup on them if you were to give them a Beauty Kit. It's only this because it's impossible to have gay characters in this game.
* CantDropTheHero: A non-RPG example. The very first Mii created at the start of a new game is your look-alike. Since the islanders constantly refer to you as "[Your Mii's] look-alike", you can't delete your Mii. You can still change how they look and what their name is.
* CanonImmigrant: This game has its own Mii creation feature, so you won't have to go to the 3DS' Mii Maker app each time you want to create a new islander. Miis created in this game can then be imported to the Mii Maker so you can use them in other games. The same goes for the children of married couples, but only if they stay on the island. However, if you have invitations turned on in your [=StreetPass=] Mii Plaza, your traveler children will show up there (with red as their favorite color regardless of what color they wore growing up, unless it's changed when the parents ask if you want to make any) and can subsequently be exported into Mii Maker.
* Cap:
** Your money wallet caps just shy of one million dollars/euros, or just shy of one hundred million yen in the Japanese version.
** Every item in the game maxes out at 99, which is easily reachable with the goods the Miis give you after you satisfy their needs or sit through a Mii's odd request, as well as super-cheap food items like Chewing Gum and Hard Candies. Sadly, capping items does not prevent you from receiving them through means other than buying them, which means a Mii's gift to you after you help them could be put to waste.
** Just like in the Wii's Mii Channel and 3DS' Mii Maker, only 100 Miis can be present at once. This becomes very easy to reach if you have many couples rapid-firing new babies that you want living in the apartments.
** Only three pairs of Miis can be in a fight at once. Every time you start up the game after a long period of inactivity, you will see the maximum number of fights break out on completely random Miis.
** There can only be 10 travelers in one's Port at once, plus 40 more in reserve, and any attempt to ship off a newly grown baby Mii while the Port's full will result in the parents keeping them for an extra day. And they don't change their expression when they find this out. Because of this, it's possible to keep a grown up baby for weeks if you cannot find other players via [=StreetPass=] to ship the baby to. This becomes especially problematic if you have many babies at once in a very small time frame and don't want them living in your apartments.
** The game only records a maximum of 9,999 solved problems. Once this cap is reached, a special News Flash occurs.
* CargoCult: The "Ritual" dream features this with random objects. This can be seen in the Nintendo Direct with a giant Platform/VirtualBoy. "All hail the Virtual Boy!"This is downplayed in the European version, in which the Miis say "My Virtual Boy" instead while doing the same dance.
* CargoShip: invoked The "True Love" dream is about two random food items (with the voice of the dreaming Mii and another random Mii) telling the player they're planning to get married.
* CatapultNightmare: How the Miis awaken from any dream they have while napping or sleeping in their apartments at night, along with a "Gah!". This is averted if a Mii is asleep in their house, where they'll instead wake up with a startled expression on their face and then either lie awkwardly on the bed without the blanket over them or fall off the bed.
* CatchPhrase: You can give Miis a generic one that they repeat randomly as one of the level up gifts. Miis may also randomly ask you to give them one to say when they're happy,Used if they make friends, gain a sweetheart, get married, have a baby, or successfully stop a vicious fight. angry,Used if the Mii had a fight. sad,Used if the Mii's apology was rejected, broke up or divorced, was rejected by the Mii they confessed their feelings to, or if they are sick. or worried.The last of which is used when a Mii wants to confess their feelings, propose, have a baby, or solving a slide puzzle. For those previously hitched with another Mii, they may try to return to their loved one.
* CatchingSomeZs: When Miis are sleeping in their apartment or house, Zs float up from them, complete with snoring noises.
* CharacterCustomization: In addition to the usual Mii creation, players can adjust various attributes to tweak their Mii's personality, and customize their voice. Furthermore, you can give them different clothes and hats to wear, as well as dye their hair to colors not possible in the Mii Maker.
* ChastityCouple: Given the targeted audience, it's obvious couples won't do anything serious, but it's still surprising when they don't even kiss or hug, not even during their weddings.
* CheerThemUpWithLaughter: This is attempted during pity parties, where a few Miis try to cheer up a sad Mii, usually with humor. This does nothing to decrease the Sadness level of the Mii.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: Couples under 18 can make this if their relationship goes well enough and you succeed the ensuing minigame, but they have to be sprayed with the Age-o-matic before they can tie the knot.
* CockADoodleDawn: One of the background sound effects heard on the island's overworld early in the morning.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience:
** The color of the babies' clothes are determined by their personality group (Outgoing Yellow / Red; Easygoing Green / Orange; Independent Light Blue / Purple; and Confident Dark Blue / Pink).
** In the Superhero dream, the hair color of the transformed Mii determines what it will say after shouting his/her name.
** The proposal is the only place where the on-screen captions are color-coded for each gender: The boyfriend's are blue, the girlfriend's are red.
** The color of the icons on the lower screen when navigating the island in Life: Yellow for places Miis live, pink for shops, orange for locations where Miis hang out and events are held, green for areas associated with [=StreetPass=], blue for other areas, and white is the 3DS Image Share.
* ColorFailure: Happens to a Mii who's fed something that they hate the most. They will melt into a gray puddle.
* ComfortFood: One of the ways to cheer up a depressed Mii is to give them food. Giving them their TrademarkFavoriteFood will instantly cheer them up.
* ComicalOverreacting: In the French version, the melodramatic default lyrics to the Opera song turn out to be about an insect that landed on the performing Mii's arm.
* CommonplaceRare:
** The stereotypical Mexican Hat (Sombreros) are a [=SpotPass=]-exclusive item in the PAL version, meaning you can't get it through normal gameplay.
** Aloha Shirts are a [=SpotPass=] exclusive item in all regions, meaning unless you got it from [=SpotPass=], you can't invoke a fake version of the HawaiianShirtedTourist trope with one of your islanders.
** The Birthday Cake is the only non-trash food unavailable in shops in the North American version. One is given out on your look-alike Mii's birthday, therefore making it available only once a year. The only way to obtain more of them is by continually editing your look-alike Mii's birthday.
** Despite being functionally useless, the trash foods are among the rarest items in the game. The only way to get them is if they're sold at the morning market, gotten as a prize at the night market, a Mii makes them with a frying pan, or they spawn from the Hunger, Ritual, or True Love dreams. Considering just how many foods and other reward items there are in the game, the chance of any of these things happening is pretty low. Not to mention, there's no way to influence the spawn rates of these items. All you can really do is hope.
* ConsolationPrize: If you lose a minigame, you'll be given either a box of tissues or a roll of toilet paper.
* ConsoleCameo: In addition to the Wii U and the 3DS XL that you can give to the Miis in the 3DS version so that they can play Nintendo games, the game also includes a NES, a Platform/GameAndWatch, a Platform/GameBoy and a Platform/VirtualBoy, all as treasures (meaning, you can't give them to the Miis for them to play, only sell them or give them to Miis to help them ask another Mii to be their special someone).
* ContinuityNod: The café in Tomodachi Life (Tomodachi Collection: New Life in Japan) plays the songs that the Miis can learn in the original Tomodachi Collection.
* CoolCrown: The female Miis wear a silver tiara with their veils during the wedding scenes. Also there's the "regal crown" headpiece.
* CornerOfWoe: Miis who are sad can sometimes be found sitting in the corner of their apartment.
* CosmeticHorror: Any Mii can given a Beauty Kit, but they aren't necessarily good at using it. Especially once the facial powder kicks in...
* CouchGag:
** The loading screen has a trio of random foods each time the game starts up.
** The save screen features one of the Miis' various animations.
** Every time a Mii is called to their apartment, they do something different.
* CrackShip: In-universe as one of the main points of the romance options. Why, yes, that is Music/JustinBieber hooking up with Medusa, why do you ask?
* CreativeClosingCredits:
** The game has one. It comes up when a couple gives you a photo album about their baby growing up, after you either allowed said child to live on your island or go on an permanent trip as an explorer.[[SocializationBonus Which translates to having the game activating its [=StreetPass=] feature so that said Mii can visit other players' island as you go pass them]]. You view the photo album as the credits roll, and at the end you see the parents making a home video of their child at the park.
** Because Collection doesn't have babies, the credits instead roll during a montage of two Miis following their marriage. The slideshow that occurs during the credits instead shows the two married Mii's heads superimposed onto the bodies of real people.
* Crossdresser:
** You can give Miis clothes of any gender, making them this. However, if you put a Mii in opposite-gender clothes, the highest rating that Mii will give the outfit is generally "Liked it".Though it's rare but possible for the rating to go higher. This rule only applies to clothes in the first two categories and does not affect gender-neutral outfits, dressy/business clothes, and "fun" outfits.
** In the Japanese version of the Superhero/Transform dream, male Miis will change into a Superheroine costume instead of a Robo-Hero suit when they transform, just like the females.
* CulturalTranslation: The game has been described by the localizers as getting the same treatment that VideoGame/AnimalCrossing got when it was localized to international audiences -- changing Japanese culture references to those of their international equivalents:
** What used to be a Sumo wrestling-like game in the Japanese version, is instead an American football-like one in the North American version. The European version turns it into Greco-Roman wrestling.
** One of the events was shiritori in the Japanese version, but was changed to a Rap Battle for the North American version. Both are present in the European version.
** Instead of being dressed up as kurokos, the shopkeepers now have wooden blocks, robot heads, or racing helmets (in the North American, European, and Korean versions, respectively), emphasizing their anonymity in a similar manner.
** In the Japanese version, a married couple can often be seen taking baths with each other, sometimes with their child. This is considered normal in Japan, but in the West, it has some implications. Thus, the scene gets replaced with either a foggy shower with the silhouette of a single Mii or the parents playing soccer with their child, which would be more common in the West.
** In general, the North American and European versions have different names and descriptions for most things, Miis say different things, and the voice synthesizer has an American or a British accent depending on the version.
* CuteKitten:
** The Cats interior in Collection is full of these, though it is sadly gone from Life.
** The Rent-A-Cat Coupon can be given to a Mii as a level-up gift, which then allows the Mii to occasionally play with a cat.
* Cutscene: One appears whenever you use the Kid-o-matic or Age-o-matic on the Mii, or when you view the thoughts of a recently broken up or divorced Mii. They cannot be skipped.
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Miis won't directly tell you when they don't like the interior you've given them.Which is odd, given that they freely show their displeasure with whatever food or clothing they dislike. If they don't really like their new interior, they'll say, "It's certainly...unique." If they flat out hate it, they'll say, "This interior is...well...it's something, all right." They'll thank you, regardless, but the activity of their happiness meter will show their true feelings.
* DarkReprise:
** If a Mii is missing their ex-sweetheart or spouse, the music played is a melancholy, subdued version of the melody played when they want to confess to their crush.
** During the cutscene of a Mii breaking up with its partner, the music over the café's radio is a somber, low-key version of the "Lovey dovey duo" music from the Compatibility Tester.
** The "huge fight resolve" cutscene is a similar manner to the "introduce someone to another" cutscene, as both scenes take place in the asking Mii's apartment, and involves the asking Mii talking to two others. However, instead of introducing them, the Mii is trying to get them to stop fighting.
* DatePeepers: When a Mii decides to set two other Miis up together, you get scenes of the Mii following the other two around on their date.
* DeathGlare: During the cutscene of a third Mii desperately trying to get its two friends to stop a huge fight, the camera shows the two fighters in close-up one by one, as they stare down each other this way angrily.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment:
** Occasionally, in the "Superhero" dream:
--> "Remember kids, always wash your hands after washing your hands."
** Sometimes, in the "meet someone on the roof" event:
--> "Just between you and me, this is between you and me."
** When a Mii is viewing a new interior:
--> "This is impressive. I'm impressed."
** A random thing Confident or Independent Miis might say:
--> "I don't like doing boring stuff. It's just so boring."
* DespairEventHorizon: How Miis react to a rejected apology, a refusal to be their sweetheart, or a divorce, if how dramatic they act when they receive a HeroicBSOD is any indication. It also occurs if a Mii is unable to get their two friends to stop their huge fight, though it won't gain sadness.
* Determinator:
** Once two Miis engage in a fight, they will stop at nothing to defeat their opponent. This includes their opponent's apartment being the only place they'll visit while enraged, apart from their own home if they're married, for the sole purpose of throwing stuff at each other.
** Miis that are rejected by their crush may have a desire to try again, if you click the thought balloon depicting the Mii while they're depressed. A determined-sounding battle theme plays when this happens. This is actually a good thing, however -- this will stop the Mii from being depressed, even if they are rejected the second time. If their crush doesn't show up, however, they will have a full sadness bar.
* DevelopersForesight:
** The game takes account the various eye shapes a Mii could have and replaces them with equivalents appropriately when it needs to. This is most obvious with the "20XX / The Future" dream where the eyes are replaced in order to make them older, although there are other noticeable instances, such as when a Mii with their EyesAlwaysShut frowns.
** If an explorer from the Japanese version visits an island on the Western releases and if they have their name written in hiragana / katakana, then they will say that they've "come from far away" instead of introducing themselves.
** During the CreativeClosingCredits, any wardrobe changes made to either of the parents during their raising of their child will be accounted for.Though it may result in some odd hat and outfit combinations.
** If one of your Travelers writes a letter or comes to visit, but said Traveler's parents are divorced, the cutscene of one of their parents reading the letter or the Traveler visiting their parents will take place in one of the parents' apartments, rather than inside their no-longer-existent home. However, if both parents are deleted from the island, your Mii receives the letter or the visiting traveler. Furthermore, any letters from them will just address you in that case.
** If a Mii is inflicted with an Age-o-matic or Kid-o-matic and the player changes their height manually, the Mii won't shrink/grow back to their original height when the player uses either spray to turn them back to normal.
** There is a way to make a copy of a Traveler Mii that can be added to the island; If you receive the traveling Mii after sending them out, they are added to the [=StreetPass=] Mii Plaza, who can then be copied into Mii Maker and from there, into Tomodachi Life as well. However, they will not have any starting friendships with their parents and any siblings the parents may have had before, and you'll have to recreate their profile, voice, and personality from scratch.
** In the Match minigame that a Mii can play with or against the player, each card, when flipped, will reveal a Mii's head or a food item, with the Mii announcing the name of the item on the card to the player, saying "It's [a/an/some] [name of food item]!" or "It's [Mii's name]!". If the card shows a picture of the Mii playing, they will announce, "Look at that! It's ME!"
** If you try to break the songs by making each verse ridiculously long (such as spamming a single letter), the game will end the performance prematurely (the same result as if you tap the "Make it stop!" button) with a warning message stating that the song could not be sung properly and to change the lyrics. Uniquely, listening to the same lyrics in the rehearsal menu results in the same thing happening, despite the "Make it stop!" button being unavailable in that mode.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Just as Miis will have two Trademark Favorite Foods, they will also have two foods they absolutely hate. They'll gag and sputter out food they really hate, but the food they hate the most will cause them to lose color, melt into a gray puddle on the floor, and empty out their Happiness bar completely. Even if a Mii tells you that they "need to eat something! ANYTHING!", if you give them one of the foods that they absolutely hate, they'll still react accordingly.
* DistinguishingMark: None of the Miis have belly buttons, which is especially noticeable in outfits that expose their stomachs.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: One of the things that Miis will say in their sleep:
--> "Not here! Everyone will see us! I need privacy to thumb wrestle!"
* DontTryThisAtHome:
** The disclaimer shown during some news reports, such as those which feature a Mii spinning a random food item, attempting to eat an extremely large version of a random food item, or attempting to fly into space on a bottle rocket.
** The version of a regular fight where the Miis throw random things at each other -- one of their conversations lampshades this:
--> Mii 1: This is getting dangerous!
--> Mii 2: Don't try this at home, kiddos!
* DudeLooksLikeALady: It's possible to make Miis that look like females, but are actually males. Also, the game doesn't stop you from putting opposite-gender clothes on a particular Mii.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness:
** This is the first Nintendo installment that introduces abnormal hair colors for Miis, but it can only be done through hair dye; it later became a permanent installment in VideoGame/Miitopia and doesn't become part of the system's Mii Maker until the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch. Similarly, this game doesn't feature abnormal eye colors at all, as they wouldn't become a feature until the aforementioned Miitopia.
** Crossed with PerpetualExpression, Miis are expressive, but their faces don't change that much, especially during sadness or fights. By Miitomo and Miitopia, Miis are MUCH more expressive and show different faces more often.
** Out of the Miis' possible expressions for the game, they don't have a "scared" expression, since that wasn't introduced until the Wii U.
* EasterEgg:
** It's possible to doodle on a sleeping Mii's face. To do so, first tap on the sleeping Mii's head. After that, a drawing interface pops up. Tapping the Clear button erases the Mii's facial features in addition to any drawings made.
** The various interactions you can do to the Mii besides giving them gifts and clicking on their speech bubbles to hear what they have to say.
** Miis aren't kidding when they say they're saving up money in order to go to outer space when you give them pocket money -- give them enough pocket money, and they literally will. The game treats this as a trip, complete with a gift related to outer space, and doing this is the only way to unlock the ability to purchase the Astronaut suits.
** During the hypnotism minigame, you're expected to slowly swing the watch from side to side to lure your Mii to sleep. However, if you instead spin the watch really fast, you'll get a different animation of your Mii getting dizzy and passing out before you progress to the dream selection menu as usual.
* ElderlyFutureFantasy: One of the dreams is called "The Future", in which the Mii dreams themselves as a senior citizen fifty years into the future.
* EmbarrassingOldPhoto:
** One of the pictures in the family album shows a picture of a mother helping her child use the potty,In the North American version. with the child looking somewhat shocked about something.
** The family album's description in the Treasure Collection reads, "This probably has embarrassing baby pictures. It's best to to keep it hidden..."
* EverybodyDoTheEndlessLoop:
** The Pop song when performing solo features a continuous animation of the Mii stepping from side to side and waving its arm, which they do for four bars in a row three times. It is also used for almost the entire J-Pop song in Collection.
* ExplosiveBreeder: Thanks to how quickly babies come and go in Tomodachi Life, even with the limit of one baby per family at a time, Miis can wind up becoming the mother and father to many children over the course of only a few months.
* ExposedToTheElements: Miis can wear any outfit in any weather. There can be snow on the ground outside, and they won't show any adverse affects from going around in a skimpy bathing suit.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Miis will completely devour any food given to them. If they're served in a bowl/plate/cup/container? No problem! Down it goes!
* EyesAlwaysShut:
** During cutscenes that occur during someone’s birthday or inside a couple’s house, the Miis will always display the “happy” expression, which changes the Miis’ eyes to upside-down Us. The only times they don’t show this 24/7 is if you blow the candles out during the birthday newscast, if the parents ask to cheer up their crying child or receive a letter from a traveler, or if the traveler gives a message upon return.
** Miis will also have the "happy" expression when they are fishingUnless they are reeling in [angry] or the fish falls off [surprised]. If they bring their friend or family (including a baby) with them to watch, they will almost all the time be happy as well. However, if a second Mii is fishing on the same boat, the 2nd Mii will always have their default expression (except for shock when their friend catches a fish), probably because they don't even get a single bite.
** This is also an eye choice in the Mii Maker; however, these Miis will still open their eyes when:
*** They make a surprised expression
*** They receive one of their all-time favorite foods
*** They apply eye makeup via the Beauty Kit
* TheFaceless: When a Mii is calmed down during a fight and they go to apologize, the front of the other Mii’s face is not shown head-on unless they accept the apology.
* FairytaleWeddingDress: Female Miis wear these during weddings.
* FakeCrossover: It's not a matter of if people will make Ganon, Luke Skywalker, or other various Miis based on multiple characters from different franchises live together in the apartment. It's a matter of how many and how soon they do it when they get the game.
* FakeInteractivity: The Miis are completely autonomous. You can prompt them to take action, but what action really isn't for you to decide.
* FallingInLoveMontage: When a Mii asks to set up two of their friends on a date, and you say yes, a short montage will play where the two friends are seen doing various activities together. The montage will end with them by the fountain, where they will either become sweethearts, or simply become/remain friends.
%% Please don't merge the following two trope entries together even though they currently have redundant descriptions, as otherwise, they go against the Example Indentation rules.
* FanDisservice: Due to the nature of the game, it's possible to give an ugly Mii some rather revealing outfits.
* Fanservice: Some of the outfits Miis wear are surprisingly Stripperific, especially the muscle costume, which makes males a WalkingShirtlessScene, and females have a LeotardOfPower, and they're otherwise clad in just a speedo. It depends on who's wearing the outfits if it's fanservice or fan disservice. There's also the bathtub scenes, which covers them only with SceneryCensor and a ModestyTowel.
* FantasticFireworks: One of the venues where the Mii proposes to their sweetheart. Several fireworks go off during the minigame, and if the proposal is successful, a giant, pink firework explodes in the shape of a heart.
* FantasyKeepsake: Miis can dream about various weird stuff. When they wake up, you get a gift related to their dream.
* FastForwardGag: Sometimes, a Mii asks you to listen to what they have to say about their friend, spouse or child. Allow them to, and the scene eventually starts to comically fast forward to the end due to how long said speech would be.
* FeaturelessProtagonist: Not only is the protagonist of the game not seen other than their (live action) hands, but said protagonist is supposed to be you, from the Miis calling you "[First islander Mii]'s look-alike",Said islander being your official Mii. to having said Mii's voice to even taking advantage of the 3DS's front camera if, for some reason, the game wants to show your face inside within the game (like a Mii taking a picture of you or one of the dreams where a Mii dreams that your giant head is peeking through their window).
* FictionalVideoGame: All the "[name of random food] Quest" games that the islanders bring up in the Hangouts at the Café. Considering the GameWithinAGame Tomodachi Quests similar naming feature, they're very likely mediocre LevelAte-based clones of VideoGame/DragonQuest.
* FingerlessHands: The Miis have these. No wonder they can easily hold things.
* FireworksOfLove: If a proposal between a Mii couple is successful at a fireworks show, the fireworks explode into the shape of a heart.
* Flashback:
** If a Mii's apology is rejected if it had a fight, their thought bubble will be tapped to show a flashback of what they were fighting over.
** Sometimes if a Mii breaks up with their partner, you can see the partner have a flashback showing their time together, ending with them sitting alone on the beach after the breakup.
** After a child grows up and leaves the house, you get an album showing memories of the child's time growing up.
* FlatCharacter: In all regions, the respective shopkeepers have absolutely no personality and characteristics whatsoever.
* FlavorText: The descriptions of every item in the game have this. Many are subjected to LemonyNarrator status with the way the items are described.
* FishingEpisode:
** If a Mii is given a fishing rod, they can go fishing on a boat in the ocean and bring a friend, their family, or another friend with a fishing rod. FailureIsTheOnlyOption because when a Mii does catch a fish, they leave the rod up in the air, and then everyone looks surprised when it just falls back into the ocean.
** There is also a news story about a fishing contest, in which a Mii wins the contest by using a random food as bait.
* FoodPorn: The combination of detailed descriptions and photorealistic objects make the food items look good enough to really eat.
* Foreshadowing:
** When a Mii tries to set up two random friends on a date, there is a way to tell if the setup will work or fail; if the Miis talk to each other in all three of the scenes, then it's hands down that it's working. If either scene features them staring into the distance, it's a hint the setup will not work. The result is told by the Miis' walking animations at the fountain: if they have happy expressions while the girl swings her arms, the setup worked. If they have normal expressions and walking the usual way, it failed. In rare moments, the Miis talk to each other in all three scenes as if the setup will work, but later at the fountain, they're walking normally, hence the setup failed.
** It's hard to tell what the Miis are saying because of the whooping gibberish they use when they talk to each other, but during their conversations at Mii Apartments, the listening Mii's face will flicker a different emotion for half a second to foreshadow how they're talking. If the listening Mii has a happy face, it's a good conversation; if they have a sad face, it's a bad conversation and they will act upset over something; and if an angry face flashes, it shows an argument about to break out.
* FountainOfYouth: The Kid-o-matic turns adult Miis into children by downscaling their height. Based on the unskippable cutscene that follows its use, the Mii becomes roughly four to six years old. Adult Miis will only request this if there are Miis of the opposite gender and the opposite age group. If all of one gender are both adults and married, then the Kid-o-matic will never be requested, leading to younger Miis of one gender continually saying, "I wish I was all grown up..."
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The four main personalities: Outgoing (Sanguine), Confident (Choleric), Independent (Melancholic), and Easygoing (Phlegmatic).
* FourthDateMarriage: There's no limit on how quickly two Miis will go through a relationship, and it's possible for them to go from being acquaintances to being married and wanting to have a baby in the span of about a day.
* FreakOut: If the player catches a couple gazing lovingly at each other in either apartment, watching for too long will cause them to notice you and act this way, before turning their backs as if to act normal.
* FreeRangeChildren: Kid Miis move into and live in their own apartments, wander the island or get part-time jobs without any parents or guardians in sight.
* FrenchAccordion: Heard when the Miis take a vacation in France.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Thanks to the RNG, it is very likely certain Miis will wind up in more fights than others, especially during the three fights generated upon powering up the game within an hour of it being in sleep mode or shut off.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent:
** Tons. The Miis can be seen doing various actions in their apartments when you don't visit them:
*** Miis might work out, doing either push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, lunges, etc.
*** A Mii might sneeze, yawn, or trip on their own feet.
*** Miis can roll on the floor.
*** Two Miis can talk to each other, sometimes making each other laugh or arguing. If you're able to watch long enough, you can see them become best friends, or start a fight.
** Miis can do various actions depending on what problem they have:
*** If the Miis had a fight, they can be seen stomping around, with puffs of smoke (or a flame for a huge fight) surrounding them, or use their punch bag (if you give one to them) in anger. If the fighting Miis are in the same room, you can see their fight from outside.
*** If a Mii has a love problem, they can be seen worried, tipping their head forward slightly, or lying down and banging the ground.
*** Sometimes a Mii might sleep. If you watch long enough, you can see them lay out a mat to sleep on, or when it's bedtime, yawn and lie down, getting in bed at the same time as the lights go out.
** Depending on which gift a Mii is given, they do something with it:
*** The Mii practices ballet with the ballet manual, performing jetés, spins, and pirouettes.
*** Giving the Mii a baseball bat or golf club will have them go to the observation tower's court to practice their swings there. With a tennis racket, they go there to practice hitting a ball, sometimes with another Mii.
*** With a beauty kit, the Mii either puts on makeup, sprays themselves with perfume, or paints their nails.
*** Giving a book to the Mii will allow them to read it, pacing the room. They may go to the café or their house to read as well.
*** A Mii with a bubble blower will go to the park or tower to blow several bubbles.
*** Miis with a CD will dance to the music.
*** Miis with cellphones will pace the room, talking on them.
*** A Mii with a fishing pole will go fishing at the beach.
*** If a Mii has a guitar, they can play it to the music. Sometimes they go to the fountain to play an acoustic version of a tune in the game.
*** Miis with hula-dancing manuals will dance the hula, shaking their hips and tapping their feet.
*** A Mii with a kite will fly it at the beach.
*** When a Mii has a laptop, they sit down and work at it, yawning occasionally.
*** A Mii with a mirror will pose at it, sometimes changing their clothes.
*** Miis with a 3DS or Wii U will play it. With the latter, sometimes the onlookers will participate or cheer them on.
*** A Mii with a punching bag will punch and kick it repeatedly. It will use this out of anger if in a fight.
*** A Mii with a Rent-a-Cat or Rent-a-Dog Coupon will have that pet visit the apartment.
*** Miis with scales will measure their weight.
*** Miis with skateboards will go to the tower and do tricks.
*** Miis with soccer balls will play soccer with another Mii, or bounce it.
*** A Mii with a study kit can write or pass out.
*** A Mii with a treadmill can run on it, stopping to pant occassionally.
*** Miis with yoga manuals will stand on a mat and do yoga poses, either a lotus position or tree pose.
** Campers have these as well, each one has a different item depending on their personality:
*** Easygoing Miis will have a teddy bear which they hug and cuddle, when sleeping their bear sits in a small sleeping bag next to them.
*** Outgoing Miis will bring a camera and take pictures from their tent.
*** Independent Miis will write in a travel log.
*** Confident Miis will read a book.
** If a couple has a baby:
*** The baby will be seen in a crib during its first stage.
*** From stages 1-4, one of the parents can play peekaboo to make the baby laugh; if the baby is sad, all participating Miis will try at it.
*** One of the parents can carry the baby or give it a piggyback ride.
*** At stage 4, the baby can play with blocks; at stage 5 it makes a castle out of them.
*** From stages 3-5, the baby can play in the sandbox.
*** Stages 3-4 have the parents and/or a few visitors sitting around the baby, either singing or clapping with it.
*** At stage 3, either one or both parents encourage the baby to stand up, and when it does, they applaud.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation:
** During the tutorial where it imagines the player's look-alike Mii having a baby, if the Mii is male, he will be shown holding the newborn baby instead of the female. When a baby is actually born, only the mother will be seen holding it.
** A school, train station, and fancy restaurant are seen in the Age-o-matic and romance cutscenes, but they can't be accessed during gameplay. It's possible they were cut, though some of these do make appearances as apartment interiors.
** Even though married Miis can be seen eating at their houses (as well as the Café), doing so doesn't fill up their Fullness meter. They also don't seem to make any money from their part-time jobs, judging from the fact that they never buy new clothes on their own or the fact that the amount of money they've saved up never goes up.
** Fights happen completely at random, even under circumstances that are just plain ridiculous if not flat-out impossible.The fights actually happen in-game based on the game's UsefulNotes/RandomNumberGenerator; nothing that happens beforehand to the Miis and their relationship will affect if eventually they will fight, and how a normal relationship can suddenly lead into a huge (burning) fight. It's not unusual to load up the game late at night or early in the morning and have one of your Miis inform you that two other Miis had a huge fight and still haven't made up. This includes two Miis who are currently in bed asleep and who were not fighting when they went to bed.
** When two Miis stop being friends because of a fight,If they fail to make up due to player inactivity, an apology being rejected, or a third Mii being unable to get them to resolve their differences in the case of a huge fight. they are removed from each other's list of friends, and their relationship is set back to square one. The problem with this is that it causes them to begin behaving as if they have never met one another. It's extremely odd seeing a Mii heartbroken over the loss of a friend, only to see them ask you a few minutes later to introduce them to that same person.
** Miis will sometimes tell you that they lost something important and ask if you can find it for them. Shortly thereafter, another random Mii will announce to you that they found something, then examine the back of it to discover the owner's name written there, upon which they ask you to return it to them. This becomes especially ridiculous when that person is a family member or friend.
** In the Morning Market, the Miis running the booth will claim things like "This is the first time we've offered this on [Island Name]" even if the same food they're offering was featured previously, and "I've been in business for over 20 years!" even if they're under 20 years old.
** Special Foods. To put it simple, each island has a randomly selected Special Food that they seemingly mass-produce and give an endless supply to Travelers to offer to other Tomodachi Life players after they fix a problem the Traveler has at the Campgrounds. You will not know which Special Food you have when you start playing, nor can you select it when making a new save file, and you are unable to get a full infinite stock of the Special Food your island manufactures.
** If you visit the apartment of a Mii who currently has friends over, those friends won't be around during your interaction with that Mii.
** If both Miis of a family own Rent-a-Cat Coupons and you go in to babysit their child if they had one, a small cat is visible on the floor in the lower right on the one/two day old minigames, appearing beside the baby Mii. It does not appear in any other scenes with the family nor can it be seen interacting with them (outside of a scene in the credits which always happens even if both parents don't own a Rent-a-Cat Coupon).
** In the Campgrounds, travelers that the player meets exhibit several unique actions compared to the player's main islanders. These include commenting on the food they receive (compared to the brief messages main islanders give when fed) their stomach growling if the player views their stomach while they're hungry (including showing the PersonalRaincloud used only on other Miis when they're sick or suffering from a HeroicBSOD), a dirty face if the player views it up-close (signaling that the Mii needs a bath) and the Mosquito minigame that was demoted from a pseudo-Islander minigame to a Campgrounder minigame during the transition from Collection to Life.
** For some reason, it's possible for other Miis to visit a couple at their house but not you. If a couple is home together and you ring the doorbell, the game will make you choose which person you want to visit. And on top of this, whenever you visit a Mii at their house, the interaction will still take place in their apartment.
** When going to bed, married Miis will always wear pajamas even if they don't actually own that clothing item.
*** At night, if their baby is having a tantrum, the couple will be shown sitting on the bed trying to comfort it. When the player presses "Babysit", they will keep wearing the pajamas while asking the player to help. But if the player presses "Visit", the Mii will be in their apartment wearing their usual clothing.
** When two Miis are in a huge fight, going into their apartments shows the two fighting Miis surrounded in a flaming aura. However, when the third Mii interferes to try and resolve the fight, the two brawlers are depicted with smoke coming out of their heads as is they were in a standard, non-huge fight, likely to prevent the fire from obscuring them.
** A few Mii News casts are set in space. However, these newscasts are completely independent of Miis taking their space trip in-game.
** When you have your birthday, your look-alike Mii will be the one calling you via phone, but at the actual celebration, they might not be present at all depending on their position in the Pampered Ranking, since it only includes the top ten Miis you've visited the most.
** Anyone can be at the barbecue, regardless of their love of any food that primarily includes meat. Also at the barbecue, someone can say nothing is better than meat except ice cream, regardless of whether they like any type of ice cream.
** A husband can say that their wife helps out elderly people, even when there are no elderly people on the island.
** A Mii can say that they can't get sleep lately, even if you've stalked them and have seen them sleep properly.
** Someone might say that they never take vacation photos even if you send them on a vacation using a Travel Ticket, where pictures featuring them can be taken.
** Miis can be shown fighting over a random food item with another Mii in a flashback regardless of how much they actually like it in-game. This also extends to the trash foods.
** One news report may mention that everyone is wearing T-shirts with a Mii's face on them despite the fact that no one is, nor is it possible to acquire a T-shirt that depicts the wearer's face on it.
** One news report shows a random Mii in pain after stubbing their toe. The video will depict the Mii in whatever outfit they're currently wearing, even if said outfit includes shoes that would have shielded their toes from the blow (including a suit of armor). In addition, the video will show the Mii stubbing their toe on a random gift, even though the item is not hard enough to stub your toe on (the Travel Ticket, for instance).
** One of the parents of a baby may say their child never throws tantrums or rarely ever cries, when the baby actually does cry from time to time.
** If two Miis are in a fight and they are at either of the fighters' apartments, you can see them throw stuff at each other. However, if one of the Miis' apology is rejected afterwards and you see the flashback of what they were fighting over, it might not always be the "throwing things" variant, but the "bear fight" or "item fight".
** When a married couple has remained in a good relationship long enough, the male might say they'll never forget the time they proposed (or if they're divorced, the female might wonder what to do with the ring they gave them), even if the female was the one who proposed. In addition, if the proposal failed and they want to try again, sometimes the Mii will be the opposite gender and not the first one who asked.
** Usually, when you overlook a Mii's apartment when they have a love-related problem (feelings for someone, want to propose, want to have a baby), they will look worried with a heart with a "?" floating around, and special music plays accordingly when you enter. However, if a Mii is wondering if another likes them, this does not happen, and the normal problem music plays instead. Justified as the Mii in question is only curious about the other Mii's apparent feelings and would like the player's input, whereas other times they are worried about their own feelings.
** When growing up, all babies will have the same coos and cries which will never change in pitch or tone to match the voice the baby will eventually get once they are fully grown.The child's voice is revealed only after the father says "My thoughts exactly!" Additionally, their favorite colors will always be marked as red when they do grow up, regardless of what eight colors they're shown wearing through their lives.
** One newscast involves a Mii growing tomatoes that look like them, regardless of whether or not they like tomatoes. Same goes for one that features two Miis fighting over a random food in a game of rock-paper-scissors, regardless their love of said food.
** Independent Miis might say they try to avoid being around other people, when you do see them around other Miis from time to time. They also mention they freeze like an ice cube when people watch them, regardless of them performing songs perfectly onstage.
** A child Mii's walking sound is higher-pitched than their parents', but in the hangout locations, they use the normal walking sound instead. Also, the Miis all have the same walking sound, regardless of how big, small, fat, or thin they are.
** A male independent Mii might say they hate talking to girls, but you can see them talk to girls just fine. This also extends to when the Mii is dating or married.
** If a Mii has a Wii U, they might say they're having some friends over and need some chips and salsa. Yet, whenever you see multiple Miis in an apartment using the Wii U, no chips and salsa can be seen.
** Sometimes, your look-alike might say "I wonder if I have a look-alike in your world, and how similar we are", despite the fact they are the player's look-alike.
** Mii children refer to their parents as "Mom" and "Dad", but this only applies to when you touch their speech bubble; in other places, they refer to their parents by name, as if they were friends, such as their impression of said parents or in the games or newscasts, or greeting the player if they were born to your own look-alike. This also extends to hangouts. Parents also might think their children look dashing or aren't going out at the moment, despite giving birth to them. Same for the children.
** Sometimes, parent Miis will say that they buy lots of sweaters for a grown child of theirs, even though only the player can give clothes to the Miis (and the child Mii in question might not even have the Sweater item in their inventory)
** Parents can also say that they feel a little down when they see their grown child's empty room, even though children do not get their own bedrooms (they just sleep in the same room as their parents).
** When looking around a Mii's interior, the Mii will continuously give the player the same set of random comments regardless of whether or not they liked it (e. g. "Very nice. No complaints!" when given an interior that they had reacted negatively to receiving) or whether or not it fits the style of the interior itself (e. g. "So shiny and new!" when given a Prison Cell interior, or "You might get dizzy and break something!" when given an Empty interior).
** When the player rewatches a child's family album in the Town Hall, the parents can often be seen wearing clothes that they had not received until after the featured child grew up and moved away.
** Sometimes the player might find that a Mii still has the price sticker on a Mii's clothes, which will always say "100" regardless of the real price. Also, the price sticker (and the store tag) can still be found on clothes made by a Mii using a sewing machine.
** Miis might say, "Doesn't [Friend Mii]'s hair look great?" even if that friend in question is bald. Similarly, bald Miis can say that their hairstyle is getting on their nerves, or they can complain that nobody noticed their new haircut.
** Miis also can say that they saw their friend's look-alike on TV, even if that friend Mii has no look-alike in real life.
** In Mii News broadcasts, sometimes individual Miis' heights and girths are altered to fit a preset appearance in the images. Probably the best example is in the "[Random hat item] Boom" broadcast (shown here) which implicitly depicts one Mii as the child of two random others (by making the "kid" short and holding hands of the now-tall "parents") even if they are not related or the "child" is actually older than the "parents".
** Miis can be seen wearing clothes in cutscenes that they might not have in their inventories.
*** The tennis uniform, the swimsuit, and the sweatshirt in the breakup cutscene. This might be the most Egregious example because Miis can be seen playing tennis, splashing water, and especially speaking to each other without those clothes in-game.
*** The Sewing Machine and Frying Pan outfits will have the Miis wear a bandanna & apron, or the chef's outfit & hat respectively when using those items.
** If a married Mii becomes sick, depressed, or angry, they will act in their houses as if nothing had even happened (but will still act sad/angry in their apartments).
* GASP: When you buy a Mystery Bag from the Night Market and find an item worth at least 100 dollars/euros (or 10,000 yen in Collection: New Life), this plays in the background.
* GayOption:
** Averted ever since the Collection days, but after the negative feedback Nintendo got for not making it an option in Life, they apologized for not having it and promised to add it to the next installment. Not to mention that you can still fool the system by making a Mii the opposite gender to make it work like a Gay Option. Some gamers complain about this option, as well as the feedback Nintendo got from said thing.
** Played with in one of the conversations at the café, where one of the Miis might say its friend has a crush on a Mii of the same gender.
** Played with in the "True Love" dream, where both foods might have voices of the same gender.
* GenderBender:
** With the exception of the ""I Love Me" Contest Held" post, none of the news bulletins from Mii News are gender-locked to one specific gender. So during such news as the "New Shampoo debut", you can end up with a girl with a boy's face.
** Wonder why the voice of a male Mii becomes high-pitched when they transform in the Transform / Superhero dreams? In the Japanese version, Miis of both genders will always change into the Superheroine costume as opposed to men changing into the Robo-hero suit and women changing into the Superheroine costume.
* AGodIsYou: Although you're referred to as simply the island's owner and your first Mii's look-alike, your abilities say otherwise. You can create Miis and decide their name, age, personality, gender, and voice. You can also choose what clothes they wear, what they eat, who they're friends with, their hobbies, and what their Catch Phrases are. Despite this, the Miis have the final say most of the time. However, you can also abuse these powers however you like, be it through SaveScumming, or downright purging the island and starting a clean slate.
* GogglesDoNothing: One of the hats is a pair of scuba-diving goggles; the Miis never lower the goggles over their eyes, even when swimming in them during the news reports, to compensate for the fact they have glasses as a face accessory.
** This can technically be averted if the Mii's eyes were placed high enough on their head.
* Gonk: If one of the Miis in a couple is non-human or has an otherwise NonstandardCharacterDesign, some interesting babies can come out of that relationship. Miis can also be made to be as simple or as crazy as the Mii Maker allows, as best shown in Vinny (of WebVideo/Vinesauce fame)'s playthrough of the game.
* GratuitousJapanese: "Tomodachi" is Japanese for "friend".
* GratuitousNinja: The "Ninja" dream involves a ninjaActually a random Mii dressed in ninja garbs. spying on the Mii. You get a free ninja suit from this dream based upon the colors of said ninja's costume if the dream occurs naturally instead of through hypnosis.
* GuideDangIt: The only way to unlock the Astronaut suits for purchase is to literally send a Mii into outer space. You do that by giving them enough pocket money. Nowhere does the game tell you this. The remaining money and destination, but not the purpose, is revealed only after you choose to give a Mii pocket money, which you also have no obvious reason to do since there are more than enough other (and free) gifts to give them before unlocking the large selection of free clothes/hats options.
* GuiltBasedGaming:
** Attempting to delete your save data will have your look-alike Mii asking "Do you really want to delete your save data?" for the first prompt. The second time, they'll ask "Are you sure about this??". On the third time, they will say "Please, don't delete me!". Once you finalize it, they go "Nooo! Why!? ...You may have deleted everything, but we still had lots of nice memories!"
** As in VideoGame/AnimalCrossing, the Miis will mention that you haven't played for weeks,Even though in most cases when they say this a full week hasn't passed in real life. though unlike that game it has no effect on the gameplay.As they forgive you immediately, and can't move out on their own. But hearing a Mii asking where you've been all that time or struggling to remember who you are can make one a little guilty.
** Miis get progressively more hungry the more you leave them alone. They go from being hungry to super hungry, then to starving, then finally to needing to eat anything.
* HairTriggerTemper:
** With Baby Miis. One second you're checking in them and they're as happy as they can be, but the instant you step out to go check something else (even after you took care of the baby), the phone rings and the baby is suddenly miserable:
--->"Excuse me..."
** This can apply to Miis who are acquaintances, best friends, sweethearts, or married. You can be watching two Miis quite happily frolicking around, doing callisthenics or even ballet. Change rooms for even a second, and you might come back to find them in a vicious fight. In fact, married Miis have a slightly higher chance of getting into a huge fight (and burn up their relationship) than normal:
--->"I had a fight with [Mii's name]. I'm so upset!"
** One news story revolves around a Mii throwing a temper tantrum for unknown reasons (though there are candy-related leads), stopping traffic.
* Hammerspace: Miis keep their gifts there, apparently, when they're not playing with them. Sometimes you can even see the actual pulling out or putting back of the item. It's especially surreal when they do this with a dog or cat.
* HappilyMarried: Two dating Miis will become this following a successful proposal.
* HappyBirthdayToYou: Sung at a Mii's birthday party, of course. In Life, the public domain melody is kept, while the lyrics are replaced with "la la la" (except the line "Dear [Mii's name]"), the game being published before the lyrics' alleged owners' copyright claim was deemed invalid. If you blow into the microphone before they finish singing, the candles on the cake go out, surprising the Miis. This is averted in the original Collection where the lyrics are kept.
* HappyDance:
** Outgoing and Easygoing Miis will do this when they're happy. Also occurs when a Mii's apology after a fight was successful, when a Mii apologizes to their sad friend for not making up earlier, and when two Miis decide to make up after an aggressive fight. Easygoing Miis will have a minor version of this as their idle pose when currently content.
** A Mii will do a very happy dance in their apartment after gaining a sweetheart, complete with fireworks and celebratory music (the music is different depending on the gender of the Mii).
** If an Outgoing Mii confesses their feelings in the cafe and their love interest accepts, the confessor will do a little dance in their seat instead of twirling in a circle.
* HarmlessLiquefaction: When a Mii eats their least favorite food, they'll turn gray and melt into a puddle as a ScareChord is heard in the background.
* HeartbeatSoundtrack:
** Used in the rare romantic sense when a Mii is about to confess their love to their crush, and as it is trying to propose. When it is ready to pop the question, the heartbeat speeds up.
** Used in a seldom intense sense in tandem with a violin, when a Mii is ready to propose to his or her sweetheart.
* HeavyMithril: The heavy metal song, "Dragon's Fire", has default lyrics about a dragon slayer.
* HeldGaze:
** Couples do these a lot. Most often used when they are at either of their apartments or their house, complete with their happy expressions and hearts appearing. A love song will play when this occurs at their house. Oddly, they never kiss.
** During a rare intervention if the love interest chooses a Mii who interrupted the conversation, both will do this if the player agrees with the relationship. Otherwise, they'll look horrified.
** Couples will give each other a brief one during the proposal after the proposer compliments the sweetheart, before turning their heads. When the proposer is about to pop the question, both Miis will stare directly at each other, as the heartbeat in the background speeds up and the player awaits the big moment.
** At the weddings, the married couple will give each other this as they walk up to each other, before they face the guests. They give each other another one shortly before the bride does her bouquet toss.
** Couples will give each other a few of these in a few photos of the family album after their child grows up.
* HelloInsertNameHere: In addition to a Mii's nickname,Which a Mii would most likely already have if you're importing them via Mii Maker or scanned a QR code generated with Mii Maker instead of Tomodachi Life. you must also give them a first name and last name. The game even allows you to give Miis vulgar or otherwise silly full names, although the game does point out that certain vulgar names would normally not be allowed if you try to give them one, and this may prevent players from making QR Codes for said Miis.
* HenshinHero:
** The two "Ranger" dreams in Tomodachi Collection. The first shows a team of five Miis in helmetless Superhero costumes, with the dreaming Mii being one of those, outside on the bottom of a cliff introducing themselves while performing some Ass Kicking Poses, before shouting their CatchPhrase as a explosion then launches then into the mountains in the back, ending the dream. The second one just has the five Miis lined up and the Mii wearing red signaling their change in pose with the phrase "Ready~!?". After this large ShoutOut to Franchise/PowerRangers, you get a Superhero Costume in the color the dreaming Mii was shown in (lacking the helmet the costume had in Life due to headwear not existing at that point).
** The "Transform / Superhero" dream in Life parodies this, with a fairy, who is a random Mii, telling the dreamer about a random (non-sensical) crisis they need to fix before the dreamer says, "By the power of [random food]!" while holding said food as if it's a TransformationTrinket. After the ensuring TransformationSequence,Which always involves the Robo-hero costume if the Mii's male or the Superheroine costume if the Mii's female (Crossdresser or a male in the Japanese or Korean versions), as well as hair in a random non-natural color. they'll call themselves a superhero name based on their hair and/or outfit color before giving kids "watching" the show "advice". The dream then ends, and you get the costume the Mii used to transform into.
* HeroicBSOD: Miis can fall under "Sadness" status from various conditions (e.g., being rejected, telling them not to pursue a particular love interest, a Mii they had a fight with refusing to accept an apology), which aside from the victim Mii's expressions is represented by the Happiness meter being replaced by a Sadness meter (which also prevents them from leveling up), a PersonalRaincloud, and depressing music playing in their apartment. In addition, they won't be able to do anything or go anywhere else apart from their own home if they're married. In order to make them happy again, you have to do things to brighten their mood, such as giving them various gifts. The somewhat uncommon Travel Ticket or their all-time favorite food will cure them instantly, no matter how depressed they are.
* HiddenDepths: Miis can ask the player if they'd like to hear something about their date, spouse, siblings or children, and most of what they bring up can't be seen in game, such as a Mii saying that their sweetheart speaks fluent French.
* HighPressureEmotion: When Miis end up in a fight, they continuously have small puffs of steam erupting from their head until you give them something good enough to calm them down (a "[they] liked it a lot" reaction or higher).
* HilarityEnsues: There are a lot of wacky events that might transpire as you live on the island.
* HitodamaLight: The sick/sad animations in the Japanese versions show the ghostly embers of possession forming next to the character instead of the PersonalRaincloud seen in the North American and European versions.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** The "Unbelievable" dream is about a random Mii telling the dreamer an absurd "fact", giving him an exaggerated shock reaction involving launching their face into space and landing it back onto their head. After that, said random Mii would admit that they made it up. However, there's a chance that instead of the dreamer having this reaction, they tell the random Mii that everyone knows that, causing said Mii to have this reaction instead of them. The dreamer then admits they made it up.
** When a Mii wants to go through with a break up/divorce and succeeds, both Miis will experience a HeroicBSOD If they are married, they will lose their house.
* HolidayMode:
** Starting the game on your real life birthday will cause your look-alike Mii to call you on your cellphone and trigger an event where the Miis wish you a happy birthday. They will then give you a birthday cake, a food item that can't be acquired during normal play.
** Come New Year's Day, the shopkeepers will say "Happy New Year", while the first news report of the day is introduced as "the first news report of [year]."
** On Super Bowl Sunday, the shopkeepers will wear American football jerseys and pants.
** On Valentine's Day, various heart-shaped decorations will appear in the shops (such as balloons, murals, and lights). You can also purchase some Chocolates in the Japanese version.
** On UsefulNotes/CincoDeMayo, piñatas are hung from the ceilings of the Clothing, Hat, and Food Marts.
** If you play the game on Halloween, the shopkeepers will wear Halloween costumes and say "Trick or Treat" instead of "Welcome."
** Starting on the week before Christmas, the hub and shop music will change into more festive tunes and the shopkeepers will wear Santa suits. Furthermore, on Christmas Eve, you will unlock a roast turkey, which like the birthday cake is a food item that can't be acquired during normal play, and the shopkeepers will either say "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays" instead of "Welcome" through the end of the year.
* HyperactiveMetabolism: This game features a wide variety of different foods in four different categories, which depending on the food will cheer a Mii up if they're angry or sad:
** Entrees, such as pork cutlets, pasta pesto, and roast beef.
** Side dishes, such as tacos, meat-and-potato stew, eggplants, baked potatoes, and avocados.
** Snacks and sweets, such as cookies, oranges, cinnamon rolls, lollipops, candy corns, candy apples, brownies, cotton candy, and pastries.
** Beverages, such as eggnog, root beer floats, lemonade, cappuccinos, apple cider, and orange juice.
* HypnoPendulum: One of the items available.Known as the "Hypnotizer" in Life. It allows you to pick one of the dreams.
* HypocriticalHumor:
--> "You should get to bed. What's that? Hey, I am NOT a hypocrite!"
** One of the small talk conversations Miis occasionally have is claiming to hate it when other people "mispronunciate" words.
** Married Miis will occasionally claim never to fart in front of their spouses. There's a good chance you've already seen them do that very thing; it's especially hilarious when it happens just moments later.
** The parents of a baby Mii will occasionally ask the player if they can talk about their baby to them. They claim that the baby "rarely ever cries" even if days before the baby had spent half the day crying to their parents.
* HopeSpot: When a third Mii manages to calm down their friends in the case of a huge fight, they will nod at both and pause as if everything is going to be alright... but then suddenly they resume fighting, and the third Mii is utterly disappointed as they duck for cover:
-->Mii: It didn't work... like, at all.
* IAmVeryBritish: The European version of the game uses a text-to-speech program with a pronounced RP accent, making the islanders sound like they're all from Buckingham palace.
* IdiotHair: The Bed Hair head accessory results in this for the wearer.
* IdleGame: The fun comes from observing the Miis going on their day-to-day lives.
* IdleAnimation: A Mii's idle pose is different depending on their personality (standing still if Outgoing or Confident, bobbing their head and arms if Easygoing, a ThinkerPose if Independent), along with different walking animations (swaying their head and arms if Outgoing, walking normally while slouching if Confident, swinging their body a little if Easygoing, walking straight if Independent). Also, they dance when happy if they're Outgoing or Easygoing, have a worried thinking pose if in love or when sad if Easygoing or Independent, slouches forward when sad if Outgoing or Confident, and if they had a fight, stomp and pound their fists if Outgoing, or fold their arms and tap their feet if Confident, or stand and shake their fists angrily if they had a huge fight. Their personality also determines what poses they use while answering the door for another Mii after telling them they want to be friends, when they're excited if their crush accepts to be their sweetheart, and when they're celebrating a successful proposal.
* IFellForHours: One of the dreams the Miis can have: they're falling through the sky while either running in place at a slowing pace and spinning around vertically until they're suddenly yanked upwards, taking bites out of passing cheeseburgers or landing on a giant cheeseburger mid-fall.
* ImMelting: This happens to a Mii who has eaten something that they hate the most.
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty: Of a sort. Child Miis will go from newborn to baby to toddler to being a VagueAge. They will stay this age forever, unless you modify their appearance.
* ImpossiblePickleJar: Occasionally, when a female Mii talks about her husband. She'd mention how she has a hard time opening jars and the husband can open it easily when she gives it to him.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: If two Miis get into a fight, they can be seen in the same room throwing any of the game's Treasures at each other as a weapon. These include rubber ducks, dirty socks, CRT televisions, expensive vases, and potties.
* IndyEscape: The "Rolling Head" dream in Collection: The dreaming Mii runs for their life from another Mii's head that has grown huge and is rolling on its side towards the dreamer.
* IneptAptitudeTest: The Compatibility Tester is just for show and doesn't actually predict pairings or friendships; it's perfectly possible for a "100%" couple to totally despise each other, while a "0%" couple can have numerous children.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Adult and child Miis can become friends, even to the point of being best friends. If the Miis are opposite genders, a child Mii is willing to grow up and marry their adult best friend.
* InUniverseGameClock: Used for determining when events take place, and when most Miis will go to bed. It also affects the day to night transition which slowly cycles from morning, day, afternoon, and night, with the transitions being affected by the current season the game is in and the sky changing gradually (in Collection) or instantly once a certain time of the day passes (in Life).
* Irony: Miis that hate a particular food will most likely have no problem eating a variant of the same food.
* ItsTheBestWhateverEver:
** If a male Mii accepts the female Mii's proposal at the amusement park, he says, "This is the best day ever!"
** A happy Mii might say, "I'm having the best day ever!"
** A married Mii might comment, "Being married to [Spouse] is the best thing ever!"
* JawDrop: A Mii does this when they realize the food they ate is their super all-time favorite, complete with widened SphereEyes, before they blast off.
* JokeItem: Several. Some of the essentially valueless treasures (especially smelly sock and disposable diaper), the trash foods, and the "Humble" interior (a room that costs less than 10 dollarsWhich is cheaper than the room with absolutely nothing--an "Empty" interior costs $20., is made of shoddily arranged and nailed-together boards, has "appliances" made entirely of crayon-doodled cardboard, and has a giant hole in the wall) stand out.
* JumpScare:
** You can do this to any of your Miis if you catch one of them with the hiccups and enter their apartment. They'll freeze in mid air while rapidly swinging their limbs back and forth before turning to you with a shocked expression. When you actually go into the apartment following the scare, they exclaim "You scared the hiccups right out of [them]!".
** One can occur if you catch a couple gazing lovingly at each other in the apartments; if you watch them long enough, this will cause them to notice you and repeatedly jumping and swinging their arms with a very shocked expression on their faces, before facing away from each other as if to act normal. There's a chance they won't do this though. There's also a chance they'll go right back to gazing each other, and will not do this no matter how long you watch them.
** In the "[Mii's Name]'s Reaction" news report, one Mii walks in with a Scary Mask on while the other Mii is on the floor, facing away from them, napping. Once the Mii on the floor wakes up and turns around, they are suddenly spooked by the Mii in the Scary Mask and launch themselves into the ceiling in fright.
** One could startle the player as a "throw scare" version, which could happen in the "huge fight resolve attempt" cutscene, where one of the brawlers could toss something at their opponent, which briefly shocks the third Mii who is trying to get them to make up.
** Once the participants in a huge fight go quiet, the camera cuts from one fighter to another giving their opponent a mean stare, complete with a startling sound. Another startling could occur if the third Mii is unable to help out -- the heavy metal music suddenly resumes as the fighters throw things at each other at rapid speed, leaving the third Mii to frown and duck for cover as the scene fades out.
** The "bong" sound when Miis fail to work things out, leaving them to break up.
** If you catch two Miis throwing a temper tantrum at each other for a very long time, a startling horror sting plays as the game announces the Miis had just started a fight.
* Kaiju: One of the dreams in Collection features your Mii suddenly growing several stories tall while in pajamas. You guide them into buildings with the stylus and can make them punch or fire off a laser beam.
* KarmaHoudini: The Mii that rejects the apology of a calmed-down Mii. Sure this calms them down as well, but it sends the apologizing Mii into a DespairEventHorizon where they cannot stop thinking about them. The apology rejector gets away scot-free, raising no flags for other Miis, even the children of said Mii if they had some, to talk sense into the rejector. Not even the player can give them a proper scolding.
* KnewItAllAlong: If a Mii sets two of their friends up on a date, they seem oblivious to the fact their friend wants them to be sweethearts. But if it fails and it comes off as "not hitting it off so great", one of the Miis will question why their friend would want them to go out with the other Mii, as if they were aware of their friend's plan all along.
* KnightInShiningArmor:
** The class Outgoing Miis have in Tomodachi Quest. They're stronger but riskier melee fighters with one standard attack and one potentially devastating but highly inaccurate special attack. They carry a sword.
** Female Miis will sometimes describe their partner as "a knight in shiny, shiny armor".
** The protagonist of "Dragon's Fire" is this type of character, slaying a dragon.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: You can make female Miis who look male. You can even dress them in male clothing.
* LamarckWasRight: The offspring of two Miis will inherit the facial features (positions, design, and color) of their parents almost exactly, either being taken after one parent or a hybrid of both the mother and father's faces. This includes the baby sometimes inheriting lipstick or eye shadow and other times inheriting old gray hair. It's also possible for the baby to inherit a full row of teeth, or even a beauty mark.
* LampshadeHanging:
** When the Miis cook, they will sometimes say "Amazingly, this dish can be made with just a frying pan." While the frying pan is necessary to make them to start cooking, many of the dishes they make are clearly cooked by other means, clearly involve other utensils, are chilled or frozen, or are an untouched ingredient.
** At the café: "Do you ever feel like we always end up talking about the same things over and over?"
* LastLousyPoint:
** Because of the random generation of shop items, with odds that don't ever change and a finite amount available per day, it is entirely possible to find all but a handful of food/clothing/interior/hats early on and then spend weeks or months waiting for the last few to show up. The frying pan, sewing machine, and certain dreams can be somewhat more help, but they have the same odds (or worse--the sewing machine is capable of making fixed-release "seasonal" wear), and while theoretically limitless, aren't guaranteed to show up at all.
** The [=StreetPass=] exclusive clothing and hats. There are several dozen models, and each one comes in multiple colors. Each island only gets one color of one model. Special food is even trickier; there are fewer of them but you can only get them from visiting travelers and rarely from [=SpotPass=] if your traveler returns.
** The copper coin and packet of tissues are much more difficult to obtain than other treasures. You can only get them if you have a visiting traveler, if they drop off a gift the next day, and if they don't leave a gold or silver coin, which will show up every level up after Miis are level 20.
* LastMinuteHookup: If a Mii manages to set up their friends on a date and it ends successfully ("I had the best time today!"; "Me too! Let's hang out again soon."), they will instantly become sweethearts without any love confession requests.
* LastSecondChance:
** If a Mii says things aren't going good with their sweetheart or spouse, the player can attempt to stop the breakup by telling them to work things out. This sends the Mii to their partner's apartment where they stare at each other with the lights out, as a clock ticks. If they can't work things out, they drop to the ground as the clock bongs, and will immediately break up afterward.
** A third Mii attempting to stop the huge fight between their two friends. If they are unable to do so, they resume their fight and instantly end their friendship, leaving the third Mii to give up and duck for cover.
** Often, if a regular fight isn't resolved, the friend who rejected the apology will realize what they did and want to apologize. This will always work, but if they don't do so for a long enough time or get in a fight with a third Mii, then they will immediately forget about apologizing.
* LeetLingo: The price of the "Gamer" room? $1337.00.
* Leitmotif: The themes of the three markets (Morning, Afternoon, and Night) are all variations of one another.
* LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand: The Japanese-exclusive "Familiar" dream in Life has this occur to the original Tomodachi Collection[='s=] island theme, along with the image of said island gaining a wavy effect and fading away.
* LevelAte: The "Fast Food" and "Sweets" interiors, which have walls, floors, and furniture made out of the food category they're named for.
* LevelCap: Mii can technically still level up upon reaching Level 99, but their level number won't increase anymore; their happiness bar merely loops.
* LevelLockedLoot: In a sense: When a Mii reaches level 20, you can choose to give them any hat or outfit you have or have had at least 1 of at some point as a level up gift for free, and they will also start giving you silver and gold coins that sell for 100 and 200 $/€ each as special gifts when they level up or when you fulfill one of their more specific requests.
* Lilliputians: The Miis are all but stated to be this:
** One of the phrases they can say when you touch their speech bubble is "How big do you think we Miis are? Like, in your world's metrics?".
** One of the news reports calls a small sand castle a "mountain", another one states that flattened Miis make perfect bookmarks or a Mii got ironed, another shows them being small enough for human-world cats to play with like pets, another shows them being chased by a "giant" (a human runner) or spotting a massive human-world-sized beast, yet another shows Miis small enough to climb "trees" which are really the life-sized vines of a building, yet another shows them at a festival riding in miniature baskets with regular balloons tied to them, another shows them small enough to be stalked by a human-world-sized crow, yet another involves Miis getting stuck in pickle jars or in cups of iced coffee, and some of the events with news coverage involve leaf boat racing and beetle sumo.
** During the Hangouts at the café, Miis may start bragging about how many meters they have swam, the highest amount being 13 meters. (However, this is translated to 20 miles in the US version.)
** However, this is averted in some parts. The cats and dogs Miis can receive with the vouchers are proportionate to the Miis, as well as the fish and crabs they can catch with the fishing rod. Some News broadcasts (e. g. the skiing one, or the face-stretching contest) paste Mii heads over human bodies.
* LimitBreak: Parodied in the frisbee event: the Miis will randomly taunt the opposing Mii, do a spinning throw and make up an elaborate name for it involving their own name, complete with an echoing voice. Despite this, the frisbee will still be tossed at the same speed.
* LocalHangout: The Café. During a Hangout, two to four Miis will sit and chat about random stuff.
* LongSongShortScene:
** The overworld and dungeon themes of Tomodachi Quest are actually slightly longer than what one would expect from the short cutscenes depicting them walking between battles. You can hear more of the overworld theme if the game decides to delay the random encounter in the overworld, while you can hear the dungeon theme in its entirely if you wait before telling the Miis which direction to go when they get to the cross-section.
** The music played at a couple's wedding has a harp glissando before it loops again, but the scene ends right when it is about to play.
* LotusPosition: This is one of the two poses the Miis do when practicing yoga at their apartments.
* LoveHurts:
** If a Mii goes out to confess to their crush, there is the possibility that they can be rejected or even stood up. The latter is particularly painful, as it indicates the crush has absolutely no interest in the confessing Mii and results in a full Sadness bar.
** There is the case in which a confessing Mii competes with love rivals, and loses to them.
** Couples are susceptible to failing relationships, in which a break up or a divorce can occur. In this case, both Miis are left with a Sadness bar. This includes the Mii that wanted to end the relationship in the first place.
* LoveTriangle:
** When a Mii goes to ask someone out, there is a chance that they will be ambushed by another islander who also has the hots for the main Mii's love interest. On an even rarer occasion, it can escalate into a love square, when a 3rd person shows up.
** It is possible for a Mii to successfully snatch the Sweetheart of another Mii, causing the previously dating couple to break up. This only applies to couples who are dating, however. Once a Mii gets married, they completely fall off everyone else's romantic radarUnless you're playing Collection, where single Miis may still try to ask out Miis that are fully married, which will always fail.
* LuckBasedMission: The entire game runs off this. To give an example of what's determined by the RandomNumberGod:
** The relationship levels of two Miis rising and falling, including those of married couples. Usually two Miis not being together often or getting into small arguments, usually signaled by one of the Miis throwing a temper-tantrum in the middle of a conversation in an apartment, is a sign that the Mii's relationship levels just dropped by one or two levels. Their relationship can also decrease offscreen when the game isn't on. It's even possible for a married couple to fall instantly from Soul mate to Not getting along in just one argument.
** The problems the Miis have, which range from hunger, asking for new clothes,In rare cases may happen more than once a day. requiring medicine, asking to sneeze, and several other requests that don't advance the plot in any way.
** Miis engaging in a fight (normal or huge, and if the Mii is married, if the fight involves their spouse), Miis accepting an apology after one of them is calmed from a normal fight and apologizes, or a third Mii succeeding in ending a huge fight.
** If the player chooses "Work it out" when a Mii wants to break up, the success/failure ratio is skewered in favor of failure.
** Asking Miis out on dates or setting them up succeeding or failing.
** What's offered at the stores, Morning, Afternoon, and Night Markets.Excluding [=StreetPass=] and [=SpotPass=] exclusives, the Birthday Cake and Roast Turkey, and the monthly, special, and level up exclusive interiors. The Night Market also offers standard game prize treasures.
** What dreams the Miis have. All but three of them have a unique prize, although what colors the clothing/hats are in "Hiding", "Superhero", "Ninja", "Royalty", and "Hat Trap" is also randomized. The food in "True Love" and "Hunger" and the food, treasure, or good in "Ritual" are additionally randomized.
** What News report is shown, and which Mii(s), Food(s), and (Treasures) are featured in it.
** What games the Miis want to play, how the individual games are designed, and what prize you win, though they are segregated into three boxes (by size, not value) except in Catch where only the small prizes are obtainable. It's also random whether you get a box of tissues or a toilet paper if you lose, though they are worth the same amount.
** What your Miis make with a frying pan or sewing machine, and where they go with a travel ticket, as each trip has a unique souvenir.
** The prize in Tomodachi Quest can be any standard food or treasure of at least $20.00 value.
** Leveling up a Mii at least level 20 will give you either a silver coin or a gold coin worth twice as much.
** When you help a Mii out, they may or may not give you a gift, and the gift they do give you is random. If they ask for a specific thing and you own it and give it to them, the chance of receiving a gift is increased to 100%.
** A traveler on your island has a random chance of leaving you one of four treasures, two of which (the cheaper ones) are exclusive to travelers and two of which are expensive, but common.
** Whether a Mii will like or dislike various foods, clothing, hats, and interiors, and how much.
** The "Food & Treasure Shadow Quiz". Chances are you might get three foods on plates to choose from, in which unless the food is sticking off the plate, you have to randomly choose from three identical circles. It gets even more ridiculous in the Double version, especially in the unfortunate case the bigger object covers up the smaller one.
** In "Zoom Quiz", there's a chance that the image will zoom in on blank space. Unless you know what items zoom in on the negative space, you're going to have to guess.
** When a baby Mii is born, you can choose to let the game decide what gender the baby is. The boy/girl ratio is often skewered in favor of boy. In addition, if the Miis have another baby a while later and you decide the gender at random, if they had a boy previously it does not necessarily mean their next gender-determined baby is a girl and vice versa.
** [=StreetPassing=], and whether or not you get some clothing from the other islands, sometimes with a visiting traveler.
** The Mii's flashback showing what they and another Mii were fighting over had their apology got rejected.
** Whoever a lovestruck Mii has developed feelings for, which sweetheart wants to propose to the other, either the boy or the girl, which is bizarre with the girl proposing, and the proposal ending in success.
** What hangout is held, when it is held, what conversation they'll have, who thinks of the conversation, which order their lines are said, which camera angles are used, and whether their lines are cut or replaced with an ellipsis.
** A rare love square happening during a confession, and whether the confessed Mii chooses one of the Miis or rejects everyone.
** One of your travelers writing a letter or coming for a visit, and passing along a message sent from another island they previously visited.
** What problem a visiting traveler has, and if they have a second problem after choosing whether to send a photo and/or message afterward, either asking to swat a mosquito in their tent or going to the apartment of the Mii they took a photo with to tell them about their travels.
** Whatever the Mii says when you touch their speech bubble, ranging from random statements to friendship, love, their gifts and the time of day.
* LuminescentBlush: Miis get this if you stare at their face close-up for too long. That is, if they don't start practicing their funny faces.

* MadLibsDialogue: The entire game is built around this, but it's taken up to eleven when the Hangouts take place.
* ManChild:
** Outgoing Miis of any age throw a literal temper tantrum when they're in a fight, and if a fight fails to be resolved (applies to any Mii regardless of personality), during their DespairEventHorizon[=/=]HeroicBSOD moment, they'll have a flashback of themselves and the opposing Mii... tugging on the arms of a teddy bear, insisting that the bear says that "he wants to play with me, ALONE!", declaring that the bear is their whole life, or screaming that the other person is hurting him. The entire scene just radiates second-hand embarrassment, especially between two fully-grown adults. Less common occurrences include the same scenario but with a random food/treasure, or repeatedly throwing things at each other, hauling insults at one another. It becomes somewhat awkward when a child Mii fights with an adult Mii, especially over a teddy bear.
** Adult Miis are just as vulnerable to rejected apologies from child Miis as child Miis are to adults or two Miis in the same age group.
** The "[Mii's Name]: Kindergartener" and "First errand" news reports are all about this, as they describe a Mii deciding to re-attend kindergarten because they want to "get a fresh start in life" in the former, and going out to do their first errand alone with busybodies who claim the Mii's not old enough in the latter.
** You can give Miis a swing set, and they'll become annoyed if you don't push them.
** Miis will refer to their stomachs with the juvenile terms "belly" or "tummy", such as when they have a stomach virus or when a Mii Facts question revolves around who has been fed recently. Amusingly, Travelers, which consist mainly of children, use more mature terminology.
** In huge fights, both Miis, even if they're adults, will refuse to apologize to one another, each Mii claiming that it wasn't their fault the fight began.There's no way to determine who really started the fight. It becomes so severe that a third Mii has to come in to try and resolve the battle, with a 50% chance it won't work.
** A news report sometimes announces one of the Miis threw a temper tantrum in the middle of the streets over candy. Even adults are prone to this.
** In the amusement park, adult Miis enjoy riding the merry-go-round as much as child Miis.
** In the US version, the default rap song contains some childlike lyrics:
--> Make way for one bad pup
--> Mouth's full of food / And it's super yummy
* MassiveMultiplayerCrossover: Given the fact that Miis can look like anyone, even fictitious characters, it's possible to invoke this in-game just by basing an islander Mii on a famous character. This is Trope and lampshaded in the Nintendo Direct, where Zelda, Peach, and Samus appear alongside, amongst other Nintendo staff, Reggie, Bill, and Iwata, and said staff even tried to date Samus.
* MayDecemberRomance: It's both possible and common, since the game ignores age gaps beyond "kid/grown-up". This is played more literally in the Japanese versions. In Collection, any two Miis of the opposite sex can fall in love and marry, no matter what their difference in age may be. It is largely the same in Life, except that now the younger of the Miis must have an Age-o-matic applied to them before they can go on to marry their sweetheart.
* MegaMealChallenge: One of the news reports has a Mii taking up a challenge to eat a gigantic type of food within one hour. They start off well, but once they get to the last bite, they end up giving up, thus failing.
* MemoryMatchMiniGame: The minigames include two variations. In the solo version, the player must find all the pairs on the board without losing all five of their lives. The VS version, on the other hand, sees the player competing against a Mii to find the most pairs, with each player getting another turn upon finding a pair.
* MissionPackSequel: Zigzagged. The original Tomodachi Collection is nearly identical to Tomodachi Life in every way, but with less quality in graphics (in exchange for a faster framerate), less customization options, fewer events, and the lack of [=StreetPass=] and children. On the other hand, Collection[='=]s roster of dreams a Mii can have when sleeping are entirely different from Life[='=]s. There are also the Miis being able to apply for job recommendations, and all the region-exclusive foods and outfits that may or may not be different depending on which regional version is played.Japanese, North American, European, and Korean.
* ModestyTowel: Giving a Mii a bath results in them wearing one afterwards, with the females wearing their towel higher to cover their breasts and having an additional towel on their head.For some reason, they have their towels on when they take a bath. This persists until you exit their apartment, at which point they revert back to the clothes they were previously wearing, or change their clothing manually. There's also the Towel clothing item, allowing this to persist until either you or the Mii changes their clothes.
* MoneySpider: Defeating the final boss item in Tomodachi Quest will give you that item. This is one of the ways that you can get incredibly valuable items such as a Gold bar or the Historical bust. The bosses are guaranteed to be worth at least 20 dollars/euros.
* MoodDissonance:
** When two Miis are currently in the same apartment angrily throwing junk at one another, the on-screen text on the bottom of the screen is written as if the two Miis are getting along, saying "[Mii 1] is hanging out at home with [Mii 2]".This is changed in the European version where it properly says "[Mii 1] is in here with [Mii 2]." This is subverted when you catch the two Miis beginning to fight, which will properly state "[Mii 1] had a fight with [Mii 2]."
** When you visit a Mii who is depressed from rejection or breakup or angry from a fight ("I'm kinda sad today."; "I'm not in a good mood."; "I'm so mad I could scream!"; etc.), they will always have their usual expression, especially if it's a happy face, making the mood quite confusing -- the Mii is happy when they're sad or mad. The Mii's default expression might also be sad or angry face when they're happy. The only exception is when they do the given gestures while saying their phrases for those moods, but it's only for a short moment.
*** It is actually possible for the player to subvert this themselves by grabbing and throwing the Mii while they go through their given Angry catchphrase (as long as they gave them a gesture to go with it), which will result in the Mii keeping their angry expression.
** Exaggerated when the Mii had a huge fight; the Mii says they're mad, but their default expression doesn't show any signs of anger at all.
* MoodWhiplash:
** Under most circumstances, if you find two Miis conversing with each other in the same apartment without entering, one of the Miis will suddenly begin to go angry and throw a temper tantrum in front of the other Mii. If only one of the Miis is arguing and you quickly switch to another apartment, the scene will change to either the two Miis getting along or the guest leaving the apartment, though both events will drop their friendship rating.
** "Pity parties" can be thrown if a sad Mii goes long enough without being cheered up. Their friends will make humorous conversation, such as talking about brushing their teeth with some random food or telling a joke, to try to cheer their friend up, but then they stare silently at the sad Mii who doesn't laugh or talk at all, just sulk. Though their heads are turned, it's implied the friends' moods have shifted from humor to worry that their friend won't ever respond.
** In the case of fights, if a Mii goes to visit their friend and apologizes as if everything's okay but then said friend says they're still not over it, it will leave the first Mii to be sad. If it's a huge fight and the third Mii manages to calm the Miis down, it seems as if everything will be alright until suddenly the Miis resume their fight as the heavy metal music plays, leaving the third Mii completely disappointed.
* MotorMouth: Possible, if you turn the Speed option for a Mii's voice to maximum.
* MultipleEndings: The romance and fight cutscenes have these, a good one and a bad one:
** After a Mii confesses their feelings, the cutscene ends with either the crush happily agreeing ("Sure!") or refusing ("I'm sorry...").
** Apologizing to a Mii after calming down from a normal fight. The good ending is the friend apologizing back ("I'm sorry too."); the bad ending is them refusing to apologize ("I'm still not over it.").
** The most extreme example is a third Mii trying to resolve a huge fight. The good cutscene ends with the Miis making up and dancing as the third Mii claps happily; the bad cutscene ends with the Miis resuming their fight as the third Mii sadly ducks for cover. Both versions will end the fight, but if it ends with them refusing to apologize, the two Miis will stop being friends immediately.
** The proposal minigame. When succeeding, the Mii will pop the question and the sweetheart accepts happily; if it fails, by losing all three hearts, the sweetheart will ask to leave, much to the proposer's disappointment.
** Another example is a relationship not going so great and the player asks the couple to work it out. If they do, with the lights coming on and they agree to try again, they continue their relationship; if they can't (they sink to the ground and grab their heads as the clock bongs), they'll just have to break up.
* MundaneMadeAwesome:
** The cutscene that plays when a child uses the Age-o-matic is a montage of them doing dull grown-up things such as going to work and dining alone at a restaurant. They acts like it's the best day of their life.
** One news report is a Mii getting a cavity, with the bacteria looking just like them. Another is a video of them striking a single pose.
** A news report shows a Mii climbing "Mount [Island name]", when the "mountain" is really a sandcastle. Another shows the Miis taking up climbing trees to stay active; the "trees" are actually house vines, and the Miis are Lilliputians small enough to hold onto the sticks of such.
** When a Mii's apology was rejected and they daydream of the fight they had with the other Mii, sometimes their fight was over a teddy bear. the most common, or a random food or item. If they were throwing things at each other... well... too harsh.
** In the British English version, the lyrics for the Metal song revolve around waking up irritable and wanting coffee.
* MusicalExposition: It is possible to create a chain of songs that have an overarching plot if played one after the other.
* NegativeContinuity: When you listen to a Mii sleeptalking, they'll say random things that have no relation to any of the dreams Miis can have. One example is "I'm going to take over the world, starting tomorrow!"; No dreams in-game show a Mii trying to conquer the world.
* NeverMyFault: If two Miis are in a huge fight, both will claim they didn't start it. The game doesn't even explain who started the fight. This is especially true if the player manages to see them argue long enough.
* NeverSayDie: Played with in the North American and European versions of Tomodachi Quest; a Mii with zero HP yields the message "X pretended to die." When it's their turn, they will be skipped with the message, "X is pretending to be dead."
* NewJobAsThePlotDemands: In Collection, Miis can be given one-time jobs through the Job Diagnosis building or Job Ticket item, with around 50 total jobs for each gender.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: If a married couple breaks up, they not only lose their relationship and get a HeroicBSOD, but they lose their house as well.
* NoFourthWall: The game literally considers the player to be a character in the game, to the point where the Miis refer to you as "[First islander Mii]'s look-alike",Said islander's being your official Mii. and the fact that the game takes advantage of the 3DS's frontal camera in instances where, for some reason, the player's face must be seen in the game.Like when you allow a Mii to take a picture of you, for example. Occasionally, your Miis will ask questions about your world. Overlaps with FeaturelessProtagonist.
** Sometimes, the player's hands and/or arms will appear in several scenes (e. g. rocking a baby), and they will match the lookalike Mii's skin tone.
** The player has some auto-generated dialogue (e. g. saying "You've got some crumbs on your mouth"), and the voice will also match the look-alike.
* NoHuggingNoKissing: Whilst romance is a feature in the game, couples never kiss or hug, and the only way they make out is when they stare at each other with their eyes closed and hearts floating up from their heads, possibly to make the romance feature more age-appropriate.
* NoOneShouldSurviveThat: One of the Miis' fights has them throwing random things at each other, which is dangerous in real life as someone could get hurt or something could break. Neither of this happens, though. They also throw things that are way too heavy to throw (the bowling ball, for instance).
* NoYou: Some of the Miis' responses to another random Mii when you see the flashbacks of their fights.
* NonNudeBathing: The Miis strangely wear their towels in the bathtub. This is obvious when you see a really short traveler Mii bathe, and when married couples take baths in the Japanese version.
* NoodleIncident: This comes up sometimes:
--> Mii (US): Did you hear what happened to (another Mii)? It made me giggle.
--> Mii (UK): I couldn't stop laughing at what happened to (another Mii)!
* TheNoseKnows: Miis will occasionally sniff the air while they are in their apartment.
* NotGoodWithRejection: Miis don't take being rejected that well, as if they confess their love but the other Mii does not return them, it sends them into a HeroicBSOD.
* NotGrowingUpSucks: Highly suggested, considering how you can wind up with many of your child Miis asking countless times "I wish I was all grown up..." if every Mii of one gender are adults and married.
* NouveauRiche: The aptly named "Nouveau riche" interior, which is explicitly described to be showy. Everything is excessively ornate, and even contains a gigantic shiny diamond in one of the corners of the room. While it's one of the more expensive interiors$2000.00 in the US version, it's not the most expensive room.
* NowBuyTheMerchandise: The last line of the default rap song has the Mii rap, "Please buy my new CD."
* OcularGushers: Baby Miis when crying. They shoot out far more tears than a normal human ever could, and there's even thunder accompanying the tears.
* OffscreenTeleportation:
** Several dreams feature this, as can largely be expected: one of them is a variant of the hide-and-seek dream where the dreaming Mii is counting with their eyes closed against a tree while another random Mii keeps popping in and out of the bushes and another tree, and another is a variation of the mirror dream, where the dreaming Mii sees another Mii rise out of the ground behind them, causing them to turn around shaking but seeing nobody there, only for the other Mii to stand in front of them greeting them when they turn back around, scaring them.
** If you visit a Mii while it is at their house, they will immediately appear in their apartment to speak to you. When you exit, they instantly go back to their house.
** Sometimes, when watching Miis in a house, they might sometimes move rooms instantaneously (accompanied by the "House selections" sound effect)
* OhCrap: Happens a lot on occasion:
** During rare interventions when a Mii confesses their feelings to their crush, the crush may choose someone other than the confessor; if this happens, the player decides on the relationship. Refusing will cause the Miis' moods to change from happy to complete shock, sometimes fainting. This also may happen if the crush rejects everyone; sometimes they faint rather than hang their heads.
** Happens in the "Unbelievable" dream. A friend of the Mii tells them something utterly impossible, causing them to have this look as their face pops off their head, flies into space and back. The friend then says they made it up, but the Mii is still shocked.
** If the player tells the Mii not to confess their feelings, they will have this look briefly, before asking why not. Upon replying though, the Mii will shift from shock to sadness.
** When a Mii has been rejected and they want to try again, sometimes they turn to see if they're coming, but then they look this way upon seeing one of their friends arrive instead, as they tell them their crush isn't interested.
** Sometimes a Mii can tell their three friends a bug flew into its apartment earlier that day, and is still freaked out. The speaking Mii and their friends will all have this expression as they express bug talk.
* OfficialCouple: Two Miis will become this if someone confesses their feelings (that is, unless they are rejected) or someone sets up their relationship. They can eventually get married.
* OneMansTrashIsAnothersTreasure: Because of their random nature, the dreams could result in this, with the Miis chasing, snatching, or even worshiping the game's four trash foods or one of the game's low-selling Treasures.
* OneSteveLimit: When it comes to babies, the pool of names the game draws from when the parents request names is quite small in comparison to the number of babies that each couple will likely have, leading to chances where they're request names that other babies, including ones from the same family, have taken.
* OnlyOneSaveFile: A game about island management, which only allows saving one island.
* OrWasItADream: After a dream, an item related to that dream appears by the Mii's bedside if the dream occurred naturally while the Mii is in bed for the night (and starting from Life, if they were napping), after which it is given to you. Lampshaded by Bill Trinen in Direct.
* OurProductSucks:
** The FlavorText for some of the Joke Items, and even some legitimate ones (like blue cheese) seem to be discouraging you from buying them.
** This is in effect with certain Mii News reports, if they use a random food and the RandomNumberGod selects one of the trash foods:
--> "Just one wash with this shampoo, and your whole world will smell like moldy bread!"
* OverlyLongGag: Happens on occasion:
** Most dreams are endless loop."Hunger", "Royalty" and "Ritual" for example.
** If two Miis are in a fight and both are in the same apartment, they endlessly throw things at each other, sometimes stopping for a moment to stare each other down as they take a breath before throwing again, until one of them leaves. Same goes for the flashback of the fight had the apology got rejected.
** The Hangouts are endless loop. Same goes for pity parties where the Miis repeatedly tell hilarious problems and jokes to try constantly to cheer the sad Mii up, while the sad Mii sulks and never says anything.
* OvernightAgeUp:
** The Age-o-matic turns kid Miis into adults.
** This is done with babies. They grow by one stage for each day that passes.Day one, newborn. Day two-three, infant. Day four, toddler. Day five, small child. Judging by the changes made to the baby as they get bigger, they appear to age on average one year for every day they're present on the island. Once they reach the sixth day, they are forced to move out, and thus age like a normal human.
** Once children grow up, if you choose to have them become a resident of the island, you gain complete editing ability of their entire profile, including the ability to set their age. You don't have this option for kids sent out as travelers. The game sets them as kids by default, but you can make them an adult by adjusting their birth year. You can even make them older than their parents if you want.
* PaperThinDisguise: Miis occasionally receive letters asking them to meet someone else on the roof. When they do, a random Mii wearing just a fake mustache and glasses, even if female or if they already have a mustache or glasses, will tell the former Mii a random comment, usually a NonSequitur, before leaving, much to said Mii's confusion. Their reaction is always the same; they exclaim, "Who on earth was that?" and comment on how strange the experience was.
* ParentalBonus:
** In the North American version, the footbag sells for $4.20.
* ParentalLoveSong:
** This plays at Mii Homes when a married couple is gazing lovingly at each other. If the player chooses to visit, it abruptly stops.
** Upon entering a Mii's apartment with a love-related problem, the music changes to match: Tinkling bell music when having feelings for someone, an intense violin riff with HeartbeatSoundtrack when they're ready to propose to their sweetheart, soft music consisting of harps and synthesizers when they're thinking of having a baby, and a tragic harp/violin song when they miss their ex-lover.
* PatchworkKids: The baby a Mii couple gives birth to will have an obvious mixture of their face, skin, and hair elements. For example, it could get the mother's eyes, brows, mouth and hairstyle, and the father's nose, skin tone, eye color, brow color and hair color.
* PepperSneeze: A dream in Collection lets you shake a giant bottle of pepper onto a Mii, causing them to sneeze.
* PerpetualExpression:
** While all Miis have happy/angry/sad/surprised facial expressions, these show up fairly infrequently, to the point that in some cases, it's rather unsettling when a Mii uses their default expression for something that's negative, especially if one is a PerpetualSmiler:
--> "Darn, I lost it."Failing to sneeze in the Sneeze minigame, the Mii has their default expression.
--> "We're not quite friends yet..."Failing to befriend another Mii, the Mii still has their default expression.
--> "I'm kinda sad today."A Mii after getting a sickness or entering a HeroicBSOD, the Mii still has their default expression.
--> "I'm not in a good mood."Angered after having a fight, the Mii STILL has their default expression.
--> "I'm feeling kinda stressed..."A Mii is in love with someone, the Mii still has their default expression.
--> "I'll try to do a better job with my proposal next time..."A Mii failed at their proposal, the Mii still has their default expression.
** Especially jarring during fights, since despite an "Angry" expression for Miis existing, it's only used continuously when the two Miis in a fight are in the same room. If it's an Outgoing or Confident Mii that's "angry" when viewed in their apartment (especially the former), they'll look like they've gone mentally insane as they stamp their feet on the floor.
** The inverse can happen, with a Mii that normally has a blank, grumpy or depressed-looking expression by default being able to act excited.
** Independent Miis will frequently say that they don't like to smile much, which feels very bizarre when said by those who have a smile as their default expression. Inversely, Easygoing Miis usually say happy, positive things, even if their default expression isn't a cheerful one. In addition, Independent Miis might say they hate smiling for photos, which is strange if they have a smile as their default expression and they have their photo taken.
** Baby Miis will always have their mouth open when one of their parents reads to them. Similarly, when they are running around at five days old, they always use the "happy, mouth open" expression except when they stop for a minute or talk.
** There are certain places where Miis will always have their "happy" expressions continuously; see EyesAlwaysShut above.
* PersonalRaincloud: One appears above a Mii that is ill or very sad, usually after their feelings aren't reciprocated or they weren't able to gain forgiveness of whomever they were fighting with.
* PictorialSpeechBubble:
** One of the things a Traveler might want to do is to talk about their adventures to a random Mii (the Mii they took a photo with) in more depth: If you agree to it, they'll visit the other Mii's apartment and start talking to them while gradually filling their room with these.
** A "thought" version appears in the minigame where the player has to help the Mii propose to their sweetheart. The sweetheart's thoughts are represented by its thought bubble appearing and disappearing, while showing various pictures cycling through at random speeds. The player has to signal the Mii when the sweetheart's thought bubble shows the picture of its face, to let it know it's time to talk.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy:
** Confident babies wear clothes that can be one of these colors depending on their gender. Done more literally with sleeping couples; the husband wears blue pajamas, while the wife has pink pajamas.
** During the proposal minigame, the male Mii's subtitles are blue, while the female Mii's are red. This goes the same for a Mii couple announcing the gender of its new baby.
** A male traveler wears blue shorts with its uniform, while a female traveler wears a red skirt.
* PinkIsErotic: Downplayed. The compatibility tester is a location that allows players to test the compatibility of their Miis and the screen will gradually show a pink background with hearts the more romantically compatible the 2 Miis are.
* PlayEveryDay:
** The shops change their stock daily, and there are events like islanders donating money to you, Tomodachi Quest,Unless you're not a treasure collector. and the temporary markets that encourage you to check in each day. Even once you've unlocked enough stuff you don't need to check every day, there are interiors that encourage you to play at least once a month. Unlike Videogame/AnimalCrossing, you don't gain any major penalties for skipping days or weeks of playing, though you run the risk of married couples divorcing or ruined friendships while the game's shut off (and in very rare cases, they'll just divorce out of the blue without any hint or sign that they're looking for divorce).
** To acquire all of the [=SpotPass=] items including all the colors for each, you had to play the game at least once on each half of a month, for two years straight from the time the game was released. The first year unlocked the outfits themselves, and the second year added the remaining colors of the outfits. The outfits stopped being distributed after May 2016, so if the player didn't get any later clothes, they are out of luck.
* PlayingCyrano: When a Mii wants to confess their feelings to their crush, you can tell them what line they should use.
* PointOfNoReturn:
** If you accidentally hit yes when an Islander asks you to play an Islander Game with them even though you may have not wanted to, you will be forced to play the game with them with no option of forfeiting. And if you lose? Enjoy your brand new box of tissues or toilet paper!
** Break-up/divorce prompts do not allow you to leave the prompt and come back. You have to choose between "Work it out" and "Move on" right then and there.
** You always have to give a Mii a present every time they level up. There is no way to skip this.
** Receiving a phone call will cause you to be immediately taken to that area, with no way to get back to the map until the event is finished. It takes it up to eleven as the map is where the save button is, making a save completely useless until the event is over.
* PoisonMushroom:
** The "Trash Food"Ruined Meals, Moldy Bread, Banana Peel, and Spoiled Milk, one for each of the categories (meal, side, sweet, and drink) that can be found on occasion. They'll never be available for sale in the Food Mart, but they can be obtained randomly any other way foods are obtained (morning and night markets, frying pan, or dreams). Miis will almost never have a positive or neutral reaction when being fed one unless they're really hungry. Feeding Miis Trash Food is the only way they can be eliminated from your stock of foods, as there's no way to sell anything that isn't a Treasure.
** Getting fed up with your Miis' constant requests for new interiors? Just give them "Humble" or "Jail cell"; they're really cheap, and Miis always hate them.
* PopQuiz: Mii Facts. They will dig really deep into everything about your islanders.
* PoseOfSupplication: What happens to a Mii if they're the victim of a RejectedApology or a romantic rejection.
* PottyEmergency:
** A dream in Collection shows your Mii rushing into a nearby public restroom only to find an endless wall of occupied stalls.
** In Life, one of the possible news reports is one of the Miis locking themself in a public restroom because of their friends making fun of a burp, which causes a group of Miis to stand outside the room while holding it in.
* PowerEchoes:
** In the "Superhero" dream, the Mii's voice echos while shouting its "By the power of (food)!" phrase shortly before transforming.
** When the Mii's sweetheart rejects the confession or intervention, their voice is accompanied by a very deep, melancholy echo.
** The sweethearts' voices have these echos in a few scenes during their flashbacks together before their breakup.
* PowerUpFood: One of the dreams involves the Mii doing pushups and noticing a plate of spinach in the North American version or a red chilli pepper in the European version. They walk up to it, go "I wonder...", eat it and then proceed to do pushups at a ridiculous speed while counting them equally fast.
* PreciousPuppy: The Rent-a-Dog Coupon can be given to a Mii as a level up gift, which then allows the Mii to occasionally play with a dog.
* PrimAndProperBun: While this is one of the Mii hairstyles, the female Miis will always have their hair in this during the weddings even if their hair isn't long enough.
* PropellerHatOfWhimsy: Adult Miis, when given the Kid-O-Matic item that de-ages them into children, will wear a propeller hat in the Kid-O-Matic cutscene (that they will not get to keep afterwards).
* Pun: Some of the item descriptions are rather corny, to say the least. For example, the Bear Barrette says:
---> "It's a--dare we say--bearette. Was that not punny? Sorry, please bear with us."
* PuppyLove: Can happen between younger Miis. They can even make a ChildhoodMarriagePromise.
* RandomEventsPlot: Anything can happen in the game. That also goes for the dreams and nightmares your Mii will get, where physics and reality are thrown out the window. More literal than most, since aside from the identities of your Miis, what you choose to give them, certain composition components,Catchphrases, custom quirky questions, music groups and custom songs. and a few preset things,e.g. unlocking special and monthly interiors. everything that happens is truly random.
* RandomNumberGod: invoked The entire game is run on this, as it determines when Miis have problems, what problems they have, with some being less tolerable than others, what people they want to meet or argue/fight with, what kind of food/clothing a Mii will like, what items the stores will sell, and what dreams a Mii will have.
* RealMenWearPink: The protagonist of "Dragon's Fire" is a KnightInShiningArmor slaying the dragon just in time for brunch. If the singer is male it comes off this way.
* RecursiveCanon: Miis are implied by the game sounds to be playing Tomodachi Life whenever they use the Nintendo 3DS XL.
* RedStringOfFate: Somewhat: One dream involves a Mii following a literal red string which, depending on certain circumstances and if it's not tied to either a Treasure or nothing at all, will show a Mii of the opposite gender. However it in no way will predict an eventual couple, as it will show Miis that are not compatible with the dreamer, opposite age group, already taken, or already married, on the other end of the string.
* RegionalBonus:
** Each version of the game (Japanese, North American, European, and Korean) contains food, clothing, and interiors unobtainable in any other version.
** Certain normal outfits and hats can become [=StreetPass=] or [=SpotPass=] exclusives in another version, such as Logo baseball caps being [=SpotPass=] exclusive in the European version, but a normal purchase in the North American version. If they're a [=SpotPass=] exclusive in one region, they'll have fewer colors available (usually only four) instead of up to eight.
** Each version has its own Text-to-Speech engines, so that the accents of each country can be better utilized.
** Several features of the Japanese version of the game were cut or changed internationally. For example, the Japanese version has Shiritori, a word chain game, at the fountain. This was replaced by a Rap Battle in the North American version. In the European version, the player can enjoy both.
* RejectedApology:
** When a Mii apologizes to a Mii that they had a fight with, there is a 50% chance this will happen. When it does, the apologizing Mii falls into the Sadness state, and the Miis are removed from each others friendship lists. If the two Miis were best friends, sweethearts, or married, that's gone. Shortly after, the apology rejecting Mii may come around and ask to be friends again, which will always work, subverting this.However, if the Mii that would later apologize winds up in a fight with a third Mii before they get the chance to apologize, they will completely forget to apologize and their friendship is permanently erased.
** Miis can rarely be so angry at the other Mii that they refuse to apologize to the other Mii, claiming they didn't start the argument,There is no way to tell who really started the argument, since the game doesn't provide the cause of the fight. making you unable to calm them down until a third Mii offers to try to patch things up between them, which may or may not work. Both ways will end the fight, however. Leaving them alone for too long or not noticing it will kill off their friendship or relationship.
* RetailTherapy: When a Mii gets depressed, such as after having their confession rejected, you can cheer them up by buying them gifts.
* RetGone:
** invoked When a Mii's friend or even their spouse is deleted, the Mii will forget that they ever existed, likely to avoid an unnecessary PlayerPunch to someone just trying to free up space on their island. If two Miis had an argument that failed to be resolved or broke up with one another, deleting one of the Miis will instantly cheer the other one up.
** If the Port reached its Cap and if any new Travelers are received, the Shopkeeper's boat will sail into the port without a Traveler, despite the on-screen text stating a Traveler was received.
** When a boat arrives, there's a slight glitch in which there's a chance the game will lag, causing every boat to sail off without picking up your travelers and leaving them behind.
* Retraux: Tomodachi Quest tries so hard to play similarly to an 8-bit game, to the point where both the Miis and the "enemies" are pixelized, the background and maps resembling that of NES-style [=RPGs=] as well as NES-style music and sound, complete with "muting" of one of the music instruments when a sound effect plays to simulate the limitations of the NES's soundchip.
* RoadTripPlot: The "Drive" dream involves the dreaming Mii as a bobblehead on a car's dashboard or a hanging ornament in the Japanese and Korean versions, as two random Miis drive through a dark forest road, with the driver periodically stopping the car to ask the passenger random inane questions that leaves the passenger with their mouth hanging open. This is, of course, so that the bobblehead Mii actually ends up doing its thing.
* RewardForRemoval: Any children of your Mii couples whom you don't wish to live on the island will instead be sent off to travel the islands. This is necessary to activate the game's [=StreetPass=] features, as traveling Miis will send home letters periodically containing items they found while traveling.
* RPGElements:
** Miis gain happiness, which is basically the equivalent of ExperiencePoints, and level up.
** Tomodachi Quest is a minigame that basically acts as a RPG starring some of your Miis.
* RuleOfCute:
** One of the ways you can tell a Mii to confess their feelings is to "be cute": When doing so, they'll first spreads their arms while happy, then acts cute by tipping their head with their arms behind their back while winking.
** Sometimes at the Girls' Hangout, one of the girls will say she wishes to be "cuter". The second girl to speak will ask her to buy some random object, while the third girl says she saw some random outfit that would look good on them. The last girl to speak will say, "You're already a cutie. Don't think too hard on it."
* RuleOfThree:
** Most quiz minigames are three rounds long. All three have to be passed to win; miss one and the game is over.
** You have three tries to help a Mii propose to their sweetheart, represented by hearts floating between them.
* RummageSaleReject: Due to their ability to autonomously change outfits, even more so with a Mirror, it's very possible that the Miis will dress up in rather goofy ensembles, depending on what clothes you gave them. The player can also gleefully invoke this by throwing some random combination together manually.
** Miis can be wearing random clothes and hats that they own in the Baby Album segment as well.
** This is also seen in the "Fashion Show" news segment, and the clothes and hats are randomly generated each time, with no regard to what clothing the Miis own in-game.
* SarcasmMode: The Miis talk this way, thanks to the synthesizers. Because of this, they fail to pronounce words with strong feeling, especially words with all caps. They also don't yell their dialogue at all.
* SaveGameLimits: The game only has one save file.
* SaveScumming:
** If the player shuts off Tomodachi Collection without going to the Town Hall and saving, followed by "No" when the player is asked if they want to continue after saving, even if the player selected Yes but turns off the game without doing anything significant, the next time the game is booted up, a News Flash occurs reminding the player to save at the Town Hall by showing a large hand pointing at the Town Hall. Repeated non-Town Hall saves will cause more hands to join the first one (up to three), pointing at the Town Hall together. This was removed in all versions of Life.
** In Tomodachi Life, as long as the player saves immediately before they try to do something, they can restart without saving if the event fails, and keep trying again until it goes the way the player wants it to (as most of these, excepting marriage proposals, have success rates determined somewhat randomly). These include:
*** Love confessions
*** Marriage proposals
*** Breakup/divorce events
*** When a Mii tries to set up 2 other Miis as sweethearts
* SayingSoundEffectsOutLoud: The Miis can do this. They say "Achoo!" when helping them sneeze or in the "Sneeze" dream, "Munch munch!", "Om nom nom!", "Crunch crunch!", or "Slurp slurp!" when eating something, in the "Workout" dream or when a child visits and has a snack, or "Swish!" when flipping their hair in the "Crazy hair" dream.
* SayItWithHearts:
** Various symbols accompany the Miis depending on what they're doing: speech bubbles with ellipses when they talk to each other; small spike bursts when they laugh; question marks if they don't understand what another Mii is talking about; purple bubbles if they yawn; small germ drops when they sneeze; colored music notes if they're happy or when they're playing music on a guitar or maracas; small trailing hearts when being romantic with their sweetheart or spouse; or Z's when they're sleeping.
** When Miis have certain problems: a rain cloud when they're sad or sick; puffs of smoke if they had a fight; a flame surrounding them if they had a huge fight; or a heart with a "?" if they want to confess their feelings, propose, have a baby, or if they miss their former lover.
** In the final scene of the Age-o-matic montage as a Mii eats at a restaurant, and sometimes in the cutscene as the visiting traveler has a snack, small flowers float over their head, as if they're entranced.
** Played with after a successful proposal at a fireworks show, when a firework explodes with various hearts over the couple, making a big heart in the sky.
** While the Miis are dancing the hula, if you give them a Hula-dancing manual, pink hibiscus flowers float behind them as they dance.
** Used in the proposal minigame; the sweetheart the Mii is proposing to has a thought bubble with cycling pictures of the proposing Mii, another random Mii, various foods, and other objects, showing the various thoughts flashing through in their mind.
** Used when a traveler tells a story to another Mii, which is represented by various speech bubbles with crudely drawn pictures in them.
* ScareChord:
** When the camera shows a close-up of the angry Miis during a scene if a huge fight is going to be resolved, a dangerous drumbeat is heard. This said sound also plays as the camera shows the confessing Mii's competing lovers, and when it cuts to the Mii, the sound is heard again, along with a gong being banged.
** If you feed a Mii their Worst Ever Food, an unnerving scare cord will play, and the camera will zoom in onto your Mii's shocked expression as they melt into a gray puddle.
* SchrodingersQuestion: Bizarrely enough, you can decide on the details of the Mii's babies through this way if you want to, from their gender, their personality, and what they look like.Although the game shows you an auto-generated appearance beforehand. The baby's name can also be decided in this manner, although it's a lot more believable in this instance for obvious reasons. Of course, you can have the game decide on everything, if you want to.
* ScunthorpeProblem: While it is possible to swear on purpose by deliberately misspelling words (or even inventing your own profanities), phrases and names will be deemed inappropriate for containing a permutation that's a swear word, even if it's in a language other than the one you're playing in or has a space inside it.
* SeasonalBaggage: The trees and grass change appearance to match the current season every few months.
* SecondLove: Miis that broke up previously are very much capable of falling in love again.
* SelfDeprecation: In Judgment Bay, you can have Miis vote for one thing over another. Which is completely random what they choose. This leads to a Mii of Iwata choosing Sony over Nintendo, a Creator/WaltDisney Mii choosing Bugs Bunny over Mickey Mouse, etc.
* SelfInsert: Encouraged to be the first islander created, after which the player will be referred to as that Mii's lookalike.
* SeinfeldianConversation: Many of the conversations the Miis have during "Chat Sessions" at the café are this.
* SequelHook: Not stated in-game, but after apologizing for not putting same-sex couples in, Nintendo promised that it would a feature "in the next game", which hints at the possibility of future titles. Come VideoGame/Miitopia, this has been fulfilled.
* SerenadeYourLover: One of the ways Miis can ask each other out:
** Boy to girl:
--> "I found a heart-shaped treasure map inside a bottle washed ashore. And when I followed the dotted line, it led me to you forevermore."
--> "The only thing as pretty as the view from way up here... Is what I see when I look into your beautiful eyes, my dear."
--> "Like a star upon the stage, I can't take my eyes off you, baby. There's nothing more I'd rather do than be in a real-life romance with you."
--> "I'd rather study your smile than math or science or art. You teach me all I need to know and give straight As to my heart."
--> "You warm my heart like hot cocoa. You're as cute as a mini marshmallow. There's nothing more I'd rather be than your special fellow."
--> "Like a team of hungry ants carrying off a fresh fruit tart, You walked into my life and stole away my heart."
** Girl to boy:
--> "You're as cool as a sea cucumber. You make my heart swell like a wave. I'd love to give you my phone number and become your special mermaid."
--> "Like the sunrise every morning, you brighten up my days. Like the sunset every evening, you set my heart ablaze."
--> "Whenever I'm around you, you make me want to sing. Oh, won't you be my honeybun, won't you be my sweet darling?"
--> "One plus one is two, and so is me plus you. I hope the two of us together can be sweeties for forever."
--> "You're the sugar in my coffee. You're the honey in my tea. You're the sweetest guy I've ever met and the only one for me."
--> "You're the picnic in my basket, the butter on my bread. Like sunny summer memories, I can't get you out of my head."
** You can also make the dating Miis sing together in certain songs at the concert hall.
** If a Mii has a guitar, sometimes they go to the fountain to serenade another Mii as it claps to the beat. Sometimes it can be their sweetheart or spouse.
* SeriousBusiness:
** Miis take rejected apologies very seriously. They get onto their knees and droop down dramatically seconds after they hear "I'm still not over it"The Mii only droops their head in Tomodachi Collection. and can't stop thinking about the Mii that rejected the apology until either you calm them down, have the rejector come back and apologize, or have the sadness go away on its own.
** Miis don't take too kindly to having colds and stomach viruses, as they treat it like they got an rejected apology, with the exact same sad animations, PersonalRaincloud, and entry phrases upon entering their apartment. Certain sick Miis will also start crying in their own apartments.
** Usually a fight is just a regular argument. But here, the Miis take fights too literally as they throw things at each other, making the fight seem like an actual war with someone else. This is taken up to eleven with vicious fights. The poses they have during such, especially in the cutscene where a third Mii tries to help out in the case of a huge fight, are even actual battle stances.
** During "pity parties", Miis will tell humorous tales and jokes trying to cheer the sad Mii up, but the sad Mii never finds their tales funny and remains silent and heartbroken throughout all of it. They gets blank stares in return.
** A Mii's partner generally does not like to break up. When their relationship isn't working and the player says they should move on, the asking Mii politely says to their partner: "My feelings have changed... Let's go back to being just friends.", but their partner doesn't find this okay and is completely heartbroken upon hearing this, their sad face showing them trying to hold back the tears as the Mii leaves.
* ShaggyDogStory: One of the news stories involves a Mii finding a beached whale, and with help from their friends, they set it free. However, the whale turned out to be a plastic toy, and the friends weren't happy about this.
* ShipperOnDeck: Sometimes a Mii will set others up on dates. They are visibly disappointed when it doesn't end in romance.
* ShopFodder:
** The various treasures you can get from playing the Miis' games, viewing their dreams, and sending them on vacations mainly exist to be sold, some for noticeably large amounts of cash.The items that sell for 100 dollars or more play a more triumphant jingle when obtained than the cheaper items. The only other purpose they serve is to be given out as gifts when a Mii wants to go out with their beloved, but the sale value has no correlation with how successful it is, you can have them give food instead, and it's just one of the eight things you can tell the Mii to do or to say.
** Beginning at level 20, a Mii leveling up will give you a Gold or Silver coin, which are high value treasures.Selling for $200 and $100, respectively. Travelers who like you enough will give you coins as parting gifts as well, which also include the slightly cheaper selling Copper coin. They can also give you the very cheap packet of tissues.Not to be confused with the box of tissues ConsolationPrize, though they sell for the same amount.
* ShoutOut: Detailed here.
* ShowWithinAShow: If you pay attention to the gameplay sounds from a Mii's Wii U, the players are playing VideoGame/NintendoLand or Game & Wario. Similarly, looking closely at a Mii's 3DS screen, it displays Tomodachi Life.
* SilenceIsGolden: During the cutscenes where a Mii experiences the Age-o-matic or Kid-o-matic and when a couple has their wedding following a successful proposal, not a word is exchanged amongst the Miis, with their thoughts conveyed through the music and their actions.
* SizableSnowflakes: The Winter interior looks like a frozen tundra with every possible arctic cliché, with giant snowflakes gently falling down.
* SleepyHead: Miis will occasionally take naps, not just in their own apartments, but also on a bench in the park and observation tower or a counter stool at the café.
* SnowySleighBells: The Christmas theme is rhythmed by sleigh bells.
* SocializationBonus:
** [=StreetPassing=] with other Tomodachi Life players will give you access to special import clothing items and hats that you can't acquire otherwise. In addition, it's possible to send "explorer Miis" to other people. Receiving them is also how you unlock all of the "special foods" and 2-4 of the treasures, depending on whether you have a Mii over level 20 first or not.
** Trading with other players via local wireless at the Town Hall will fill up your Collection a lot faster.
** If you simply receive another player's Mii by scanning the Mii's QR code, you get the Mii, as well as their current clothes, current apartment interior, and catchphrases.Except if you're importing a Mii created within a game copy of a region different than yours. However, if you receive a Mii via the Send/Receive feature, which requires linking up with another 3DS that has the game, you'll also receive the Mii's current Happiness level, known food likes and dislikes, songs, gifts, and additional interiors and clothes that they have but are currently not using.
* SpeakingSimlish: Downplayed; mostly whenever Miis talk to each other, you will hear a "whoop whoop whoop" sound effect that sounds like a slide whistle, similar to Bebebese.A high-pitched variation is given to the children when at stage 5. They speak perfect English when talking to you and in certain major cutscenes that have subtitles appear at the bottom. Similarly, whenever the Miis laugh, you will hear something that sounds like a flapping blanket.
* SphereEyes: While this is a usual eye choice and the "WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises" version happens when the Miis are shocked, the Mii will get the one-eyelash version of these after they eat their super all-time favorite food, complete with a jaw drop.
* SpoofAesop: The Superhero dream ends with one. Some examples:
--> "Remember kids. Always wash your hands after washing your hands." \
"Remember kids. The only thing to fear is fear itself and also spiders." \
"Remember kids. Only you can prevent burnt marshmallows."
* SpookySeance: One of the daily news is about a random Mii that decides to become a mystic. Their predictions are so spot-on that another random Mii is stated to run away from their tent without paying when things got too spooky, but they later mailed the mystic a cheque, just as predicted.
* SpritePolygonMix: The backgrounds and Miis are in 3D. However, the food items, treasures, and gifts they interact with are in 2D.
* StaggeredZoom: Happens in the original Tomodachi Collection right when a Mii eats their favorite food.
* StaringContest: Miis in a fight will often stop throwing things for a moment to stare each other down as they take a breath. In the "try to stop a huge fight" cutscene, each Mii is shown staring down their opponent in close-up.
* Sting: Several. If the Miis becomes friends, a short "ding" plays as they raise their arms in the air. In addition, if the game announces the Miis had a fight if you catch them arguing long enough, they stomp and pound their fists angrily as a "dun-dun-dun-dun-dun" sound is heard.
* StockScream: The Wilhelm scream is used by Bill Trinen in the American Nintendo Direct.
* StoodUp: Sometimes when a Mii wants to confess their feelings to their crush, they won't even show up. When this happens on their second attempt, meaning they can potentially be stood up twice, the Mii gets a full sadness bar. There's also a possibility of another Mii, usually the best friend of said love interest, and is the same gender, coming in their place to say the crush isn't interested.
* StorybookOpening: The family album montage begins with a shot of the front cover as it opens.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: The baby a married couple gives birth to will have an obvious mixture of their face elements.
* StylisticSelfParody: Miis may lampshade the fact that they are Miis by stating that "someone who looked just like them appeared" while playing their Nintendo games.
* SuddenlyVoiced:
** The Miis have their first audio-visual dialogue in this series. The Miis previously spoke in text in VideoGame/StreetPassMiiPlaza and had VoiceGrunting in games like VideoGame/MarioKart.
** Done in-game when a child Mii is about to leave their parents' house; the very first thing they says depends on what you choose for them to do:
-->Moving into an apartment: You've been such a great friend to us.\
Leaving to travel the world: I can't wait to see the world!
* SupermodelStrut:
** The first scene of the montage after using an Age-o-matic to turn a child Mii into an adult is them strutting this way through the train station, before showing themselves off as the train arrives.
** Female Miis walk this way during the fashion show news report.
* SurrealHumour: A mainstay of the game.
* SyntheticVoiceActor: invoked The Miis were intentionally given these so players can relate to them better, as well as to make the Miis able to speak lines of MadLibsDialogue involving names, food and treasures. This caused problems when it came to localizing it for international audiences, to the point where the first game wasn't released to Western audiences mainly due to troubles in getting it to work with non-Japanese voices. They figured it out for Tomodachi Life. There are six presets as well as a custom design system with sliding scales for pitch, quality, speed, tone, and accent and four choices for intonation.
* TakeOurWordForIt: Every time a couple watches TV, it's never shown what they're watching, the only exception is in a photo when four Miis are watching Mii News. In addition, when couples eat, the Mii on the right and their child will always have their backs turned.
* TakeThat: The Miis are programmed to have a high chance not to raise their hands in Quirky Questions whenever "Sony" or "Microsoft" is entered within the blank for the question "Who likes ______?"
* TakeYourTime: In comparision to VideoGame/AnimalCrossing, where the townsfolk will eventually move away and your town will be infested with weeds, there's no real penalty for not playing the game for a long period of time. At most, the Miis will state that they haven't seen you in a while. However, there is a chance that married couples will end up divorcing during your inactivity, and you will also skip any days of a baby's possible growth.
* TallTale:
** The Pictorial Speech Bubbles from a traveler Mii when a Mii of the player's wants to hear more about their "travels". The player's Mii believes every single detail.
** Mii News can come off as these, simply with how over the top some of the news reports can get.
* TantrumThrowing: One news report shows a random Mii threw a temper tantrum in the street, causing everyone to notice.
* Telepathy: Apparently, during the proposal scene, the player can see into the sweetheart's mind, as their thought bubble shows various pictures flashing one by one. When the thought bubble shows the face of the proposer, the player has to let them know that it's time to speak.
* TemporaryOnlineContent: On May 16, 2016, almost all of the [=SpotPass=] items were discontinued altogether. If the player doesn't have any of these items, they are out of luck unless they know someone who has them or they use a cheat device. The only item that is still available is the Schoolgirl uniform.
* TemptingFate:
** Miis hope that they and a friend are friends forever, or their partner is their spouse forever. Then come a fight that fails to be resolved....
** Go ahead, tell Miis to make up on their own after they get into a fight. It never works:
--> Mii: Please help me calm down first!
* ThingOMatic: The Age-o-matic and Kid-o-matic, sprays that can turn a child into an adult and vice versa.
* ThinkerPose: Independent Miis have this as their idle pose when they're currently content (instead of, for example, dancing when happy or shaking their bodies with anger if they're Outgoing Miis). Miis of any personality can also display this as they pace around their apartments without you entering.
* ToiletHumor:
** Miis farting, whether it's a tiny little toot or a loud, wet one. A baby will also fart if you tickle their body for too long for the first time in a play session. This is lampshaded by one of the possible comments a Mii can give in the British translation:
--> Mii: You didn't hear me parp in my room, didn't you?
** One of the non-sequitur lines that disguised Miis will say during a rooftop meeting is "I mostly just come up here when I need to fart."
** There's a line that occasionally pops up during Pity Parties that implies one of the Miis present just farted:
--> Mii: Did you hear that?! That WAS NOT the dog, ha ha ha ha ha. Ehem. Sorry about that...
** In the original Collection, there's a dream showing a Mii rushing into a unisex restroom containing an endless wall of occupied stalls.
** One news reports focuses on a group of four Miis sitting on a rock in front of a lake; trying to cheer up a fifth Mii that feels depressed because they "stepped in dog poo".
** Another news report in the sequel ranks Miis based on how much "toilet time" they spend, while another involves a Mii locking themself in a public bathroom leaving everyone outside with a PottyEmergency.
** The Toilet Paper, Potty, and Disposable Diaper treasures. One picture in the CreativeClosingCredits shows an EmbarrassingOldPhoto of a baby on the Potty.
* ToiletSeatDivorce: Married couples can attempt to break up and demolish their house if one of the Mii's relationship levels dares reach "Kinda" or "Not getting along" or if a couple is chosen by the [=RNG=] to duke it out, even if they're Soul mates. And there's nothing short of SaveScumming you can do about it.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: The protagonist of "Dragon's Fire" is a KnightInShiningArmor slaying the dragon just in time for brunch. If the singer is female it comes off this way.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Every Mii has two of these (only one in Tomodachi Collection). Their absolute favorite will send them launching into space from sheer bliss, and their second favorite (or their favorite in Collection) will cause them to breakdance.
* TransformationSequence: The "Transform / Superhero" dream involves the dreamer transforming into a superhero/heroine through this manner.
* TransformationTrinket: Parodied in the "Transform / Superhero" dream, where said trinket is a random food item.
* TranslationConvention: Inverted. Miis speak perfect English in most scenarios (when you're in their apartment, during events, when saying catchphrases or using the phone while you're overlooking their apartments, when sleeptalking, etc) but during situations where what they're saying isn't important (such as when they're conversing with other miis at Mii Apartments/Homes or while out and about), their speech is rendered as wobbly gibberish that sounds like when you flex a plastic sheet.
* TriumphantReprise:
** The music during a couple's wedding is an orchestral waltz rendition of the Mii Maker theme.
** The music played when a child Mii is grown up is a modern pop remix of the music box melody when the child was born, as if the song grew up with them.
* TruckDriversGearChange:
** The map theme modulates up one whole step from D to E major.
** The Pop song starts out in B♭;, but the final section modulates up to F# major;.
** The final verse of the Ballad song shifts up a half step from A♭; to B.
** The second half of the Opera song shifts from G minor to its relative major, B♭ major.
** The family album theme/staff roll shifts up several steps, beginning in C# major to E major and finally to G major.
* TruthInTelevision: "You shouldn't eat too much of the same thing. Every diet needs variety!"
* TwirlOfLove:
** When a Mii confesses their feelings and their crush accepts, if the confessor is Outgoing, they will twirl happily.
** If a Mii is given clothing that they love, they will spin around in the air.
** A Mii may spin their partner around when singing an Opera song as a group.
** If the player acquires every food item, in the news report, your look-alike Mii will pat their chest and turns in a circle repeatedly. Same goes for the news report if the player gets every special food; your look-alike Mii will jump in a circle continuously.
* Understatement: When Miis get into big fights, Outgoing Miis, who are visibly throwing a tantrum with their body, can say "I'm not in the best mood today" when visited.
* UndesirablePrize:
** The cold and stomach medicines. Most goods, in addition to having a specific in-game purpose, can also be used in a more general sense to cheer up depressed Miis, calm down angry Miis, or just for fun. The cold and stomach medicine, however, cannot be used for anything other than curing a Mii who has a cold or a stomach virus. You'll receive far more of them than you'll ever have the chance to use, to the point that eventually you'll begin to actively groan upon receiving one.
** The Age-o-matic and Kid-o-matic can end up being undesirable if you don't want to fiddle with the ages of your Miis. And the fact that you can change their ages simply by editing their birthdays makes them pretty much redundant anyway; the only difference is you don't get a cutscene to watch. They also can't be used to cheer up or calm down Miis, and unless you have at least one islander of both genders un-married in that age set, they won't ever ask to use them. Miis in a relationship will also refuse to use them, meaning that if everyone in the game is dating or married, the items become completely useless.
** There are a number of game-won treasuresThe Acorn, Clothespin, Disposable Diaper, Finger Trap, Lump of Coal, Pebble, Pinecone, Receipt, Smelly Sock, and Swimming Certificate. that are worth less money than the consolation prizes,The toilet paper and box of tissues, both of which are worth $1, or ¥100 in the Japanese versions. and except in the Catch game, there's no way to know in advance whether you'll find one. While it's good to find them each once for completeness' sake, after that it becomes very annoying. It is possible to avoid them in non-Catch games by only looking in the large box, but at the price of missing out on several expensive treasures, including the most expensive treasure in the game.Gold bar for $1000 in the medium box.
** The trash foods. Since you cannot sell them, you're stuck with having to dispose them on a Mii, which will always guarantee a negative reaction and a slight drop in Happiness.
* UngratefulBastard: When given food, clothing, or a hat that the Miis don't like, they will let you know in no uncertain terms. This can even happen if the item is expensive. They're more polite about interiors, however.
* TheUnintelligible:
** Since the Miis use a "whoop whoop whoop" sound effect when talking to other Miis at times, it's hard to determine what they're saying, though the expressions on their faces and gestures might hint if they're talking friendly or arguing. Specifically, whenever couples sing to their child, what they're singing is inaudible.
** Every time you choose to help a Mii that wants to be friends or introduce one of their current friends to another they don't know, you'll always have to pick what the Miis should talk about or do to get along. Even when doing this, the player can't tell what the Miis are saying because of the whooping sound they always use in said scenes.
* UnlimitedWardrobe: There are over 400 clothing items and 100 hats, not including [=SpotPass=] items, thousands factoring in colors, and Miis can not only own as many as you feel like giving them but change in and out of them whenever they want to.
* TheUnreveal: Played with in a few conversations at the café. Either a Mii has a secret but refuses to tell it, has something they cannot tell anyone, or starts to say something but stops themself to say it's a secret, forcing all their friends to be angry at them and wanting to hear it.
* UnstoppableRage: When an Outgoing Mii gets into a normal fight with another Mii, they will wave their arms in the air while stamping on the floor with both feet. During huge fights, their rage has reached high levels that they'll refuse to apologize and you have no choice but to find another Mii to take action.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: The "Giant" dream involves a Mii seeing a giantThe player picked up by the camera feed. through their window. Usually they freak out, but sometimes they just sit there due the 3DS' face recognition system being poor.
* VariableMix: The apartment theme changes depending if you're outside or inside, the latter removing the backing beats. The music becomes high and whiny if the visiting Mii is hungry, changes to a fast jingly theme if they're happy, becomes low-pitched and gravelly if they're sick, and when they're sleeping, the melody becomes lullaby-like. When entering if they have a regular problem, all music drops out and gains a more questioning beat.
* VideoGameCaringPotential:
** It's hard not to feel happy after you've helped a Mii make up with someone they had a fight with or propose to their partner, or when seeing a married couple take care of their baby.
** If you're checking in on a couple with a baby, there's a chance the baby will be crying. You're not obligated to do anything since the parents haven't called you, but if you want to be a really nice person, you can offer to babysit and calm the baby down.
** Adding to the above, during the night you may hear crying coming from the Mii Homes and checking on them you'll find the parent(s) in their pajamas trying to calm down their child before bed. If you help calm down the baby and then leave, they'll be fast asleep and getting some much needed rest, thanks to your help.
** Calming babies down can be frustrating if you don't make any progress, but there's something nice and rewarding about hearing the baby cooing happily, especially if you manage to make it to the point of "[baby] is in such a good mood now, and to think, [they] was crying just a minute ago."
** Being good to a traveler can feel extremely rewarding, since it's easy to get the impression that they have a rather difficult life.
** Actually bothering to feed Miis until they're full. They appreciate this so much, .
** Every time a Mii levels up after level 20, they thank you for being so nice and give you either a silver or gold coin, which you can then sell for a good chunk of cash.
** If a couple's child grows up and you choose to have them stay on the island, their first words will be, "You've been such a great friend to us."
** It is important to visit your island often, as relationships may decrease offscreen. Caring for your Miis is a good way to keep their relationship up, especially if they're dating or married.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential:
** Obviously, considering that the Miis go to you for advice a lot. Even more blatantly, sometimes, after having a baby, your Miis will ask you to play with their kid, which if the baby is less than a day old, will lead to being tasked with rocking them. You can then shake the baby. Do this twice and your Mii will take the kid back and give you a WhatTheHellPlayer, but there is absolutely nothing stopping you from immediately doing it again.
** You can blow out the candles of a Mii's birthday cake during the song, denying the Mii the chance to blow it out themselves. They don't seem to mind much.
** During a song performance, you can hit the "Make it stop!" button to force the performing Miis to stop and freeze in place. You can even hit the button at the very end during the audience clapping if you really want to.
** During the BBQ event, you can ignore the game's requests to blow into the mic to stop the barbeque from smoking onto the Miis' faces, causing the Mii getting a faceful of smoke to complain about it and the other Miis to pity them or suggest them to stand somewhere else. The more times this happens to the same Mii, the more soot-covered the Mii gets, until the only thing not covered by it is their eyes: You can also keep doing this until everyone's pitch black.
** Deciding to help a Mii to declare their feelings to a Mii who already has a sweetheart. If the sweetheart shows up, the Mii will get a full sadness bar. But if the Mii successfully wins themselves a new sweetheart who was already dating someone else, the ex will instantly have a full Sadness bar and act as if the two just got dumped though a "Things aren't going so well" dialogue.
** Want to be cruel to other players? Get some Traveler Miis onto your island then turn off [=StreetPass=]. This will delete the Travelers.
** Moldy bread, spoiled milk, ruined meal, and banana peel are "food" items you can feed to your Miis. You can also feed them their least favorite foods deliberately after learning what they are.
** When a couple calls you with "Excuse me..." to help them with their crying child, you can say no. The parents will politely say, "That's fine...", but the looks on their faces will make you feel like the world's biggest bastard. Considering that you may have just checked on the baby before and they were perfectly fine only to become upset the instant you step out, and the parents giving you goods you probably don't need if you do help them out (such as the Medicines and Age/Kid-o-matics), you'll probably be wondering what the parents might have done to launch their own baby into tears.
** You can cause Miis to shudder by turning them around, tapping on them and then rubbing their backs. They may even turn to face you.
** If a rare "love square" happens and the crush chooses someone who is not the confessor, they ask the player what they think of the relationship - if the player chooses they're against it, their faces will change from happy to complete shock (sometimes fainting), and their relationship is off.
** Sometimes, a Mii will ask for your opinion on something, such as wanting to know if you liked their impression of another Mii. Going for the jerk/mean options will have the Mii call you out for being so cruel.
** With the ability to have your Miis sing customized songs, the possibilities are endless. That being said, you could have one Mii sing a song about how much they hate another Mii or how much that Mii sucks.
** If a Mii gets depressed over a breakup or rejection, you can choose not to cheer them up and leave them to wallow in their self pity (although they will gradually recover over several days).
** Traveler Miis can be lost very easily due to the save data of the island they're on getting deleted or having [=StreetPass=] switched off while they're on the island. They can also be deleted if the port they're trying to travel to is full (the port only holds 50 travelers), leading to the boat that they'd ride into the Port on being completely empty (apart form the shopkeeper and the cardboard box) and not showing a traveler disembarking from the boat, despite the onscreen text stating that a traveler was received.
** There is a mini-game in which a traveler asks the player to kill a mosquito in their tent. The player has 5 tries to slap the bug, and if the player misses and hits the traveler, the Mii will briefly make a sad face. Of course, the player can slap the traveler all 5 times if they want, while the player (using the look-alike Mii's voice) will automatically say in-game, "I swear I didn't do that on purpose...". However, the traveler will be quick to forgive afterward.
** In the Flying Disk event, if the player holds on to the frisbee long enough without throwing, both of the target Miis will make sad faces and repeatedly ask the player to throw. If the player keeps throwing it to one Mii and the said Mii throws it back to the player each time for long enough, the other Mii will become angry (with an angry expression) and repeatedly point to themselves, while shouting the likes of, "Hey! I'm playing too, ya know!"
* VideoGamePerversityPotential:
** There's a lot of potential for lewdness in this game, given the degree of player input. The FaceDoodling on a sleeping Mii, for one thing, can be a bit obscene. It isn't saved, however.
** You can draw anything on the beaches once you get enough people and have the islanders vote on which option is better. There's just something funny about seeing your islanders decide on whether butts or boobs are better. And this is the cleaner stuff you could put on.
** Quirky Questions. Even though the game prevents you from outright putting explicit words into it, nothing stops you from putting in Double Entendres or Unusual Euphemisms. You can slip obscene or crude words into the questions by misspelling them:
-->"Who likes to do it every night?"
-->"Who hides Schit in their room?"
-->"Who can't live without my seamen?"
** You can write your own song lyrics, leading to some people making their Miis sing about sex. (NotSafeForWork)
** You can make your Miis say horribly vulgar pickup lines when they ask out another Mii by telling them to "Use a line".
** Because you can use any combination of eyes, hair, mouth, and nose, regardless of gender, you can give a "male" Mii a effeminate look. This will result in said Mii being completely topless after exiting a bath (granted, she won't have any discernible features due to she really being a he).
** You can have all your Miis walk around in bikinis and swimsuits if so inclined.
* VisualPun:
** A Mii "in flames" with another Mii is also literally on fire. Some burning rage, huh?
** Miis that are feeling sick will be given a PersonalRaincloud. In other words, they're under the weather.
** Sometimes sick Miis can have viruses in their tummies -- a literal stomach virus.
* VocalDissonance: The game doesn't stop you from assigning "male" preset voices to female Miis and vice versa. Also, with the custom voices, you can give female Miis deep baritones, or even basses, while giving male Miis extremely high voices. The kids also inherit a randomized hybrid of their parents' voices, which can sound almost exactly like their opposite gender parent.
* TheVoiceless:
** If you choose to send a grown child off as a traveler or move in as a permanent resident but either location is full, the child will remain silent, only until then will they speak for the first time.
** During a pity party, the Mii that is sad from an apology or confession being refused or a breakup will always remain silent, no matter how hard their friends try to cheer them up with their humorous stories. Their anxious stares could indicate they're angry at the fact their friend never emits one chuckle.
* WatchingTheSunset: One of the things the Miis can do when they take a vacation to Africa is watch the Savannah sunset.
* WeBuyAnything: The Pawn Shop buys all of your Treasures for money. Consider that Treasures range from Game Boys, vuvuzelas, pebbles, sand, solar panels, coal, or even fossils.
* WelcomeToCorneria: The messages available for Miis to say can be quite limited. One example that should become very obvious is Miis going "A change in scenery is always nice" (or "I'll take good care of it" in the PAL version) every time they receive a new interior. This is lampshaded for laughs in a conversation at the café:
-->"Do you ever feel like we always end up talking about the same things over and over?"
-->"For sure. Deja vu."
-->"Totally."
* WeWinBecauseYouDidnt: Inverted in the Vs. Match Islander Game. It's possible to end the game in a draw. If that happens, the Mii says "That was a great game" and then gives you the prize choices as if you had won.
* WhamLine: "Things aren't going so great between me and (sweetheart/spouse)...""I want to break up with (sweetheart/spouse)" in the PAL versions \
There is no lead-up to this, save for an orange "social problem" icon, and since that icon is far more frequently used to indicate various other social problems (such as wanting to befriend another Mii, where to take their SO on a date, or to get your opinion on a particular friendship), the player will almost never see this coming, especially if it's the first time it's happened in their game. If you want the relationship or marriage to sustain, you have to tell the troubled Mii to "work it out", and even then there's no guarantee they won't break up anyway.
* WhatTheHellPlayer:
** You can tell a lovestruck Mii not to pursue whoever they're falling for. Doing so prompts them to ask you why not, and your answer will always put them into the Sadness status. Unfortunately, this is the only way to avert relationships that squick you out, or avoid the harsher revelation that the person they're after is already taken. And if you tell them it's because they're crazy, the Mii will say, "What a horrible thing to say..."
** Shaking a baby too hard during the baby rocking minigame for a baby born on the same day causes Miis to give you one of these. This is Trope in that sometimes you are required to shake the baby to cheer them up, but not hard enough to bring the attention of the parents. The first time you shake too hard, which can be an honest mistake, especially if you're having trouble finding the right rhythm, the Mii will politely ask you not to shake so hard. If you keep doing it, however, they'll become angry and take the baby away from you.
** A Mii may occasionally ask you what you tend to wear around the house. If you choose "Underwear", the Mii will reply with "That's disturbing..."
** Miis will occasionally ask you if you've done anything interesting lately. If you say no, they'll reply, "Oh, so talking to me isn't interesting, then?" in a huffy fashion.
** A Mii might ask you if you could start treating them better than everyone else. If you reply that you already do, they'll call you a liar, even if you're telling them the truth.
** Deciding against two Miis becoming sweethearts, if the crush chooses an interrupter instead of the confessor during a love square, will cause the Miis to stare at you horrified as if thinking "WTH?!", sometimes fainting.
** If a Mii makes a funny face and you tell them "I'm speechless" they ask "How can you be so cruel!?" In the EU version, you can instead tell them that their funny face is "[a]n improvement", to which they will reply "That's the worst comment you could have made."
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: By inputting umlauts or altering words to bypass Nintendo's filters, words can become very strangely pronounced:
--->WebVideo/Vinesauce's Clown: "Honk honk Fhuker!"Pronounced "FEW-ker".
* WhiteMage: The class Easygoing Miis have in Tomodachi Quest. They have one very weak standard attack and the ability to heal the party member with the lowest HP up to four times. They carry a gold staff.
* WhiteVoidRoom: Apartment rooms that haven't been taken in by Miis yet look like this from the inside. Furthermore, there's a interior to give to one of your Miis called "Empty", which looks exactly like the empty apartment rooms, except without the door. The description of said interior notes how one could become bonkers just by staying in it for too long, although that probably won't happen to your Miis in quite a while.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: There is the not-so-common case in which a Mii will like clothing meant for the opposite gender.
* WintryAuroralSky: The Winter interior somehow manages to features northern lights indoors.
* WishUponAShootingStar: In one of the conversations of a Gal's Hangout, one Mii might mention they saw a shooting star one night. One of the others asked what they wished for, but then stops them from saying it out loud or it might not come true.
* WorstNewsJudgementEver: This is the point of Mii News. Other than announcing when something's unlocked, their main point in the game... Is to announce silly news articles, such as a Mii reentering Kindergarten, or a Mii finding a lost sock. Sometimes interviewed Miis will Hanging this with these possible responses:
-->In other words, we're having a really slow news day, right?\
Isn't there anything more interesting going on?\
Do you guys ever cover anything serious?
* WorstWhateverEver: Something an Independent Mii might say.
-->When all eyes are on me, I freeze up like an ice cube. Worst. Feeling. Ever.
* WritingAroundTrademarks: Several items have generic-sounding names due to their best-known names being trademarks:
** The yo-yo is called a "spinning toy".
** The frisbee event is referred to as "Flying disc".
** The Jell-o food item is known as a "Gelatin dessert".
** The Popsicle food item is called a "Frozen treat".
* YearInsideHourOutside:
** Baby Miis age at the rate of one year for every day that passes.
** This may be in effect with the older Miis, as they will go "Haven't seen you in a week" despite it being well under a week since you last checked on them. Let several more pass without you visiting a Mii and they'll go "Haven't seen you in a month".
* YearX: There's a dream where a Mii, now looking like an old man/woman, states that they haven't seen you in 50 years and makes a random comment based upon how they were doing around that time. The name of the dream? "20XX" in the British translation.It's "The Future" in the American English translation.
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: The medieval-themed Metal song "Dragon's Fire" has some of this, especially in the line "I shalt saveth the day".
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Once a couple's child leaves the island to explore the world, they can never return to live on the island again, only returning for a little while before leaving again.
* YouCantThwartStageOne: No matter what you do, you cannot prevent fights between two Miis from occurring, including the random trio of fights generated after at least an hour of inactivity with the console either in sleep mode or shut off. It can even happen where one or both of the Miis are sleeping.
* YouHaveResearchedBreathing: The player must give each Mii their respective catchphrases: their basic catchphrase on a level up, and their emotional ones when they ask the player directly.
