->''"Robotic citizens of the Solana Galaxy... the hour of your liberation IS AT HAND! Too long have we robots SUFFERED under the bigotry, the stupidity, the SQUISHINESS and foul stench... of organic life forms! Soon, all robots will bask in the liberty... and equality... of my benevolent, iron-fisted rule! And... as for you filthy organic life forms... YOU can look forward to BEING DISINTEGRATED! '''MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!''' That is all for now."''
-->--'''Dr. Nefarious'''' message to the galaxy, with his butler Lawrence providing sign-language interpretation

The third game in the ''Franchise/RatchetAndClank'' series, and the first to include multiplayer modes.

Ratchet and Clank have [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando put an end to the Protopet plot in the Bogon Galaxy]] and are enjoying their newfound downtime, but unsurprisingly, it doesn't last, as they learn that Ratchet's home planet Veldin is under attack by a new villain known as Dr. {{N|amesToRunAwayFromReallyFast}}efarious, a MadScientist and robot supremacist who also happens to be a former foe of Captain Qwark. Ratchet's unwilling to allow his homeworld to come to destruction, and the two heroes promptly return to the Solana Galaxy to stop the attack. Upon learning of Qwark's history with Dr. Nefarious, they reluctantly track down and team up with the disgraced superhero in order to thwart the doctor's scheme to turn everyone in the galaxy into his robotic slaves.

----
!!This goes out to all you tropers 'cross the galaxy...
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: The labyrinth of a sewer beneath Dr. Nefarious's base on Aquatos.
* AbsurdlyHighLevelCap: Unlike the previous two games, which capped bolts at 9,999,999, this game tops it off at '''99,999,999'''. While the games bolt economy is much more generous than the previous games, its still far more bolts than any player would need to get all of the weapons and gadgets, and takes a very long grind to even get close to reaching the cap.
* ActorRoleConfusion: Dr. Nefarious believes Clank is a ''real'' secret agent.
* AdamSmithHatesYourGuts: Heavily downplayed. While the game's weapons can still get rather pricey (particularly in regards to the R.Y.3.N.O.), especially during [[NewGamePlus Challenge Mode]], the game's bolt economy is far more generous here than in previous games. The [[CashGate cash gates]] have been completely abandoned (the only gadget that needs to be bought is the optional Gadgetron PDA), arena challenges, missions, and the Qwark Vid-Comics provide ample opportunities to quickly farm lots of bolts, and the OldSaveBonus helps mitigate the high prices for the new weapons and allows the old and otherwise pricey Megacorp weapons to be bought for free. Challenge Mode also generously carries over the Bolt Multiplier from ''Going Commando'', making it even easier to build up bolts, and even in normal play, the Jackpot Crate allows for quick bolt farming as well. And as with the other two games, a handful of optional arena challenges aside, the game never forces you to buy a weapon, meaning a player can save up for a preferred weapon and pass up buying certain weapons until later.
* AmmoUsingMeleeWeapon: The plasma whip.
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: This is the first game in the franchise where Qwark is playable, albeit in the "Qwark Vid Comics".
* {{Antepiece}}:
** Right at the beginning of Veldin, you're given the Nitro Launcher by the Galactic Rangers, and in front of you is a tyhrranoid hovership gatling away just barely out of range. The game immediately encourages you to use the Launcher to destroy it to safely demonstrate its range of fire and damage--you cannot simply bypass it because it completely blocks the path below it, hitting it with the wrench is rather unwise due to its low damage output and the fact that it will put you right in its line of fire, and the Shock Blaster, while a decent alternative solution due to its own good range, takes far longer to destroy than with simply using a single Nitro bomb.
** At the very end of Veldin, theres a section where a hovering tyhrranoid is shooting at Ratchet in a way that makes it very difficult to attack it from a side angle, but also includes stone barricades to protect you. According to the developer commentary, this sections purpose was to teach players how to use strafing and how to use cover in combat as well.
* AntiFrustrationFeatures:
** For the players benefit, the [[CashGate Cash Gates]] from the previous games were permanently dropped from the series starting with this one, meaning players do not have to waste as much time grinding for bolts just to make progress and can focus entirely on saving up for weapons. The game's more generous bolt economy and the [[OldSaveBonus Gadgetron/Megacorp weapon discounts]] are just icing on the cake.
** Arena battles and mission based areas generously refill your ammo by default to save the player some bolts.
** Vendors now have the option to refill all weapons on the spot as opposed to having to manually refill each one. The Phoenix vendor also has a generous "try before you buy" VR option to give the player a taste of the weapon they're trying to get.
** [[NewGamePlus Challenge Mode]] allows players to skip the Qwark Vid-Comics they already completed to save time, though this means missing out on the not-insubstantial bolt rewards they'll get for replaying them.
** The Hypershot is a combo of the Swingshot and Dynamo gadgets and automatically equips when a player is near them to save time and quickselect space for the player.
** Unlike ''Going Commando'', the crystal sidequest is completely optional, is condensed into one medium sized area as opposed to two very large and vast areas, and the Amoeboid enemies are ''far'' less brutal than [[DemonicSpiders the infamous Y.E.T.I.s.]]
** After being absent from the previous game, the Gadgetron [=PDA=], which allows you to buy weapons and ammo on the go (except for the Megacorp weapons), [[LastDiscMagic returns as an optional gadget at the Thran Asteroid Belt]] that players can pick up and use. While its not a cheap gadget at 250,000 bolts and the prices are still higher than a normal vendor, since bolts are much less scarce than in the first game, one can use it more freely here.
** In Challenge Mode, getting hit while piloting a vehicle or turret does not reset your Bolt Multiplier.
* AntiGrinding: To ensure players don't just keep farming large bolts from the same arena or mission challenges over and over, the bolt rewards gradually keep decreasing with each victory until they become downright paltry.
* ArtisticLicensePhysics:
** The Thran Asteroid looks more like a planet than any asteroid, and an asteroid couldn't possibly support any kind of atmosphere or climate on it, even a frigid one.
** The Liquid Nitrogen Gun follows the staple Hollywood version of the substance that instantly freezes enemies into brittle pieces of ice, which is nothing like how it actually works.
** The Refractor beam can permanently bend light to its whim to go in another direction in mid-air, something that is absolutely impossible to do.
* AsteroidsMonster: The Ameboids, returning from the first game.
* AwesomeButImpractical:
** A fully upgraded Ultrashield Launcher returns fire to enemies and can drain health from enemies and restore it to Ratchet, but the former is weak and the latter doesn't work unless Ratchet is close to one of shields (enemies thankfully don't need to be that close to shield). Also the shields are stationary and don't give any indication of when they will wear off, meaning your protective barrier can fade away at any time, exposing you to shots.
** From a meta standpoint, the game's three control schemes (normal, lock-strafe and first-person) can be placed on the quick-select menu. Theoretically, this allows players to switch between the three modes on the fly to take advantage of their specialties (platforming and crowd control, general combat, and precision aiming, respectively). In practice, it's a good way to invoke DamnYouMuscleMemory, since each mode has wildly different button layouts (including altering the ''jump and fire'' buttons).
* {{Bathos}}: The game takes this further than any other game in the series, [[DenserAndWackier cranking up the satirical elements and comedy]] to the point where the game's story becomes an outright farce, and, aside from a few scenes such as [[spoiler:Qwark's [[DisneyDeath supposed death]]]], the game does not take itself seriously at all--and even the few darker moments are quickly offset by gags.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: An in-game meta example. The Annihilation Nation announcer says that most people know Ratchet as [[ShowWithinAShow Secret Agent Clank's]] bumbling chauffeur. Said bumbling chauffeur then goes and blows a ton of crap up in the arena with weapons as big as he is.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Dr. Nefarious may be a LargeHam villain that is LaughablyEvil and gets frequently snarked at by Lawrence without knowing it, but he can summon what looks like dark {{Magitek}} and is a formidable villain in both of his boss battles.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** [[spoiler:Captain Qwark]] of all people pulls this off at the end of the game, just in time to [[spoiler:save Ratchet and all of Veldin from getting robotized by the Biobliterator.]]
** Before that, [[spoiler:the Galactic Rangers show up midway through the final battle to aid Ratchet in fighting Nefarious' robots.]]
* BondOneLiner: Appropriately enough, Clank gets one in the "Secret Agent Clank" films at the beginning and end of the game. Clank [[spoiler:(or rather Klunk)]] also gets one after Courtney Gears is killed.
-->'''Clank [[spoiler:(Klunk)]]''' One disposable pop star... disposed.
* BookEnds: The game starts and ends with the cast watching "Secret Agent Clank", with the opening showing a new episode, and the final cutscene before the credits showing a movie.
* BoomerangBigot: Dr. Nefarious hates "squishies" [[spoiler:despite formerly being one himself]].
* BossRemix: The boss theme for the fight against Courtney Gears is a remix of "Death to Squishies".
* BrainUploading: [[spoiler:A cross between this and WeCanRebuildHim is what caused Nefarious to become the robot he is now after a horrible accident at the hands of Qwark while he was still organic, though it's never quite explained which is more accurate.]]
* BrokenPedestal: A lategame cutscene has Ratchet tear into Qwark for [[spoiler:fleeing to a remote hideout out of fear of dying (or, if you consider the events of the last two games, the realization that he is not the hero he once was) during the ongoing battle with Nefarious]].
-->'''Ratchet:''' Deep inside you're a [[DirtyCoward cowardly wuss]]? [...] You're pathetic, Qwark! I can't believe I [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002 once]] looked up to you.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: A rare heroic example of the villainous variant. [[spoiler:Courtney Gears]] has a VillainousBreakdown in the middle of their boss fight, when Ratchet kills their favorite [[spoiler:dancer]]. Of course, to the player (and presumably Ratchet as well), said [[spoiler:dancer]] looked completely identical to any of the number of mooks they'd been mowing down for the entire fight.
* CallBack:
** The Amoeboids from [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002 the first game]] are revealed to have been an early galactic domination/destruction ploy by Dr. Nefarious (making their appearance then something like {{foreshadowing}} for him).
** Also, in the fourth vid-comic, you visit Qwark's training course [[AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent as Qwark]].
** In Metropolis, there's a Skill Point called "2002 was a good year in the city" for blowing up the Qwark blimp. 2002 was the release year of the original ''Ratchet & Clank'', which also features a Skill Point for blowing up the same blimp in the same city.
** Several enemies from the original game and ''[[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando Going Commando]]'' make a cameo in the opening cutscene as pieces on Ratchet and Clank's board game. The flying two-handed robots you can meet at planet Daxx for the first time also appeared first in the original game on planet Batalia. Finally, the test dummies in the simulator on the Starship Phoenix are the same as the ones on Kalebo III, down to their weapons.
** Just about everyone [[CrowdedCastShot from the first three games]] is in the cinema watching the Secret Agent Clank movie at the end of the game. Then there is of course [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando Slim Cognito]] who sells you or gives you some Megacorp weapons and even mentions Mr. Fizzwidget if you have an old save from the previous game.
** The head section of the Scorpio boss seems like the one taken from [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando B2-Brawler]]. One of Ratchet's skins also directly refers to him as his "long-lost brother".
** Some music tracks were used in previous games. [[spoiler:The Leviathan's crash site]] reuses the music from the Blargian Snagglebeast boss battle from [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002 the original game]], normal arena challenges use the one from Aranos after you escape from prison from the [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando previous installment]], boss battles there have the same track as the jet fighter segment on Pokitaru and finally, the last planet has the same track as the jet fighter segment on Drek's Fleet (both first game). And, of course, Metropolis and Blackwater City keep their themes. Even more themes from the previous games are used in the game's multiplayer mode.
** When you arrive on Veldin, Ratchet's garage has been mostly destroyed, but his poster of Qwark is conveniently intact. You can later see it in the break room on the Starship Phoenix, suggesting that someone salvaged it.
* ChangedMyMindKid: Ratchet and Clank find Captain Qwark [[spoiler:after he faked his death so he wouldn't have to actually risk his life (and if you use the events of the previous two games as evidence, the realization that he is nothing more than a washed-up has-been), and are unable to convince him to continue fighting, with Ratchet even calling Qwark a DirtyCoward before leaving. Clank, however, chooses to stay a little longer to remind Qwark of how much he means to the people of Solana, telling him that he can redeem himself and be a hero again. Qwark seems to take these words to heart, because later on, in the final boss battle, he comes dramatically sailing in on his spaceship, pumping rounds into the boss.]]
* ChargedAttack: The Shock Blaster from V2 onward. By V5, it's a full blown WaveMotionGun.
* ChaosArchitecture: Veldin, barring the location where Ratchet's garage is, looks absolutely ''nothing'' like it did in the original game, having a completely different level layout and desert-like appearance. While the desert-like atmosphere could have been an effect of the Tyhrranoid invasion, it still fails to explain how the geography could undergo such a rapid change in the year and a half Ratchet was gone from Veldin.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: One of the vid-comics shows Qwark stowing away on Nefarious' spaceship by clinging onto it for dear life, and survives the six-day space travel by ''holding his breath the whole trip.'' While it sounds like something Qwark would embellish, the series' GaidenGame ''Size Matters'' would retroactively reveal that he could actually do this.
** TruthInTelevision: Surprisingly, it technically ''is'' possible to hold your breath in the vacuum of space, but there would be far more hazards in space to put up with alongside it, and it would be incredibly difficult (and [[TooDumbToLive obviously, extremely dangerous]]) and only possible for a very brief period of time, and it would be completely useless ([[ExplosiveDecompression and outright lethal]]) in the context Qwark pulled it off in.
* CheatCode: There are some in the original and HD remake of the game, all of which are entered in the Pause Menu.
** [[LaserBlade Laser Sword]]: Input Circle, Square, Circle, Square, Up, Down, Left, Left to replace the Omniwrench with a double-sided laser sword. (This cheat is the only one that appeared in the original American version of the game.)
** [[VideoGame/ApeEscape Pipo-Saru Ratchet]]: Put in Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right, Square Square, Square to get an ''Ape Escape'' monkey as a skin. (This cheat was originally exclusive to the Japanese version of the original, but was added to the HD remake for all countries.)
** Santa Ratchet: Press Up, Down, Up, Down, Square, Square, Square to get a skin consisting of Ratchet dressed as the jolly old guy. (This cheat was also originally exclusive to the Japanese version of the original and added to the HD remake.)
** Qwark in a Tutu: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Circle, Square, Square while being in a Qwark Vid-Comic (not select screen, the Vid-Comic itself). This one is also referenced by Al InUniverse.
** Notably, the HD remake (as well as the beta of the original) includes two ''debug'' codes that were left in, and can be accessed with button codes on the pause menu like the others.
*** Weapons and Gadgets: Input Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Square. Now you can enter the weapons or gadgets menu and press L3 on things to unlock or relock them.
*** All Planets: Press Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Circle to make all the planets in the game appear (plus 2 other game-crashing ones) on the list of places you can fly to. (This cheat can brick your save file if you mess around too much.)
* ChekhovsArmoury:
** Courtney Gears appears for the first time when you first win on Annihilation Nation, before you discover her role in Nefarious's plot.
** The Tyhrra-Guise is only used in a single area, then comes back in the final level, where the Tyrrhanoids are back, and a lot smarter.
** On your first visit to the Phoenix you can see areas off to the side of the lift platform with no way to access them, [[spoiler:then the ship gets attacked at the end of the game and the lift is destroyed, opening up those areas as an alternate route]].
* ComicallyMissingThePoint:
** Shows up every now and then. The first instance occurs when Ratchet finds Al using a city's defense system to play a video game. Ratchet asks Al how he could do such a thing, and Al responds by listing the steps he took to hack into the system, instead of answering why he would use an important installation for such an irrelevant activity.
** When Ratchet and Clank discover that [[spoiler:Qwark had survived the destruction of Nefarious' ship and hitched a taxi ride via a shoddy lady disguise, Ratchet mutters "I should have known.", to which [[NotSoAboveItAll Clank]] asks "What, that Qwark had a sister?"]]
* ContinuityNod:
** If you have a save file of ''Going Commando'', Slim will give you all of the returning Megacorp weapons for free, and say that Fizzwidget gives his regards.
** Also to the first game, where Ratchet is hired by Gadgetron, only to be disappointed to learn that the employee discount doesn't kick in for another two years. Well, two annual installments later, and if the player has a save file of the original game, they get a 10% discount on all Gadgetron weapons in the game.
* CoolShip:
** Ratchet's Star Explorer returns from [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando previous game]], though there aren't space battles anymore, unfortunately. You can still customize its exterior though.
** Starship Phoenix is also this, having living quarters, vendors for weapons (which you can test before buying them in simulator) and armor and battle arena.
* CoughSnarkCough: The narrator does this at the end of the first Qwark Vid-Comic, the one with the robotic pirate ghosts.
-->''"The exciting, all true, *cough* right *cough* adventures of Captain Qwark continue in Episode 2."''
* CrosshairAware: Terrible Two and Doctor Nefarious. They will first paint the battlefield with crosshairs before [[MacrossMissileMassacre raining down missiles]].
* CurseCutShort:
** There are a ''lot''. The most well-known is probably this one:
--->[[spoiler:'''Klunk:''']] What a load of bull--
--->'''Ratchet:''' Shhh!
** From the Giant Clank section of the filming of ''Secret Agent Clank'':
--->'''Director:''' That's it Clank! Kick his- *microphone feedback*
** On the trip to the Leviathan:
--->'''Ratchet:''' Captain my- *chaos interrupts him before he could say the word*
* DamageSpongeBoss: The final fight against Dr. Nefarious. He is extremely resilient, and there are no shortcuts to bringing him down--even the Plasma Coil barely puts a scratch on him. Just throw everything in your arsenal at him and dodge his attacks as much as possible.
* DareToBeBadass: Clank gives such a dare to Qwark [[spoiler:at his hideout, which he fled to while the rest of the Q-Force and Galactic Rangers have been fighting against Dr. Nefarious's army]].
-->'''Clank:''' The people of this galaxy need you, Qwark. They believe in you. [[HopeBringer You can give them hope.]] You have a chance to redeem yourself and become the hero you have always wanted to be.\
''[Qwark looks longingly at his Q-Force gear]''
* DeadpanSnarker: Lawrence, quite so. He almost always has a witty comeback to Nefarious' remarks.
-->'''Dr. Nefarious:''' To think, they called me insane, Lawrence! We'll see who's insane after my pets have exterminated all life on this miserable planet!
-->'''Lawrence:''' That should clear things right up, sir.
* DeathCourse: First in Florana, and later, taken up to eleven, in Annihilation Nation. Ratchet himself even provides the page quote for this trope.
* DenserAndWackier: This game is by far the most comical game in the series, basically a lighthearted farce in contrast to the dark satire of the preceding games.
%%* DeveloperRoom: The Insomniac Museum, again.
* DiscOneNuke:
** While the Shock Blaster, your first weapon, starts off as a decent energy shotgun, upgrades quickly turn it into the very powerful (at least by the standards of the early levels) Shock Cannon, which can charge up blasts that deal truly devastating damage to enemies, particulary bosses, at the cost of chewing up ammo like candy. Its a nice alternative to the Flux Rifle and Annihilator until you can afford to buy them.
** The Nitro Launcher likewise is a respectable crowd control weapon to start off with, but persistent use quickly turns it into the Nitro Eruptor, which launches truly devastating bombs with incredible damage and range.
** If you have a [[OldSaveBonus memory card with a completed save file]] of ''Going Commando'', you can get the two last-game weapons Slim Cognito initially sells (out of five total), the Miniturret Glove and the Lava Gun, for ''free'' as soon as you meet him on the fairly early level Aquatos. Both are every bit as useful as they were in that game, and the Lava Gun's mediocre Meteor Gun upgrade has been replaced with the souped up Liquid Nitrogen Gun upgrade.
* DistressedDude: [[spoiler:Clank gets knocked out by Courtney Gears and delivered to Nefarious after he finishes filming for ''Secret Agent Clank''. When Clank refuses to side with him, Nefarious decides to hold him hostage.]]
* DoubleEntendre: The title, a common trend in the series. [[labelnote:Hint]]Up Your ''ARSE''nal.[[/labelnote]]
%%* TheDragon: Courtney Gears.
* DualWielding: Ratchet wields two wrenches whenever he uses an Inferno Power crate, although it's mainly cosmetic. The regular swing is the same speed, the Hyper-Strike has no special effect, you only throw one wrench with the Comet-Strike, and you can't swing the one wrench left in your hands during the Comet-Strike either.
* DuelBoss: The FinalBoss encounter with Dr. Nefarious starts out like this. But then it gets {{Subverted}} when the Galactic Rangers [[TheCavalry finally decide to show up midway through the fight]]. Either way, unlike Drek or Qwark from the previous two games, Nefarious is notable for taking Ratchet on with his own abilities without the need for a [[HumongousMecha mech]] (at least until the second half) or siccing a mutant monstrosity on Ratchet.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Courtney Gears calls Dr. Nefarious "Snookie Wookums".
%%* EvilAllAlong: Courtney Gears
* EyeOnAStalk: The Tyhrranoids' most prominent feature is a varying number of prominent eyestalks, ranging from one to nine. The more eyes they have, the stronger they are.
* FanDisservice: Qwark when he's disguised as a maid delivering a pizza to Dr. Nefarious in the third Vid-Comic. The pic gives you a clear view of his fishnet stockings and undergarments. This happens again later when Qwark disguises himself as a top-heavy woman while calling a Taxi Cab, and again with the Tutu cheat code for the Vid-Comics.
* FaceHeelTurn: For a while, Clank's [[spoiler:red eyes and evil grin]] may look like he might pull this off, himself. [[spoiler:Of course, we later learn he is not really Clank]].
* FakeStatic:
** During the first trip to Aquatos, Ratchet and Clank get a call from the ''Secret Agent Clank'' director, who tries to get Clank to come back to the studio to film some more. Ratchet responds by doing this, to which the director points out that he can see Ratchet. Ratchet [[CuttingTheKnot simply responds "how about now?" and hangs up on him]].
** During one of the Galactic Ranger missions on Aridia, one of the [[LovableCoward Galactic Rangers]] calls Ratchet to ask if he needs support, only to fake static to avoid getting an answer.
* FakeUltimateMook: Despite looking intimidating, King Amoeboids are [[PaperTiger downright pathetic (and VERY easy to one-hit kill)]] once your weapons are decently leveled. You can even use the Quack-O-Ray on them for D.I.Y NightmareRetardant. Hell, you can even kill them with ONE wrench swing, even in Challenge Mode!
* TheFunInFuneral: [[spoiler:[[FakeUltimateHero Captain Qwark's]]]] memorial features not only Ratchet (who knew damn well that the deceased was about as heroic as [[BuffySpeak something not very heroic]]) and listing their "wonderful qualities" as including being really tall and having a chin with "kind of a butt shape", but also has Clank ([[spoiler:actually [[EvilTwin Klunk]]]]) responding to the Galactic President's heartfelt speech with "What a load of [[CurseCutShort bullsh-]]".
-->'''Ratchet:''' And he had a unique... "fashion sense"...
* FurAndLoathing: Evil robot IdolSinger Courtney Gears says "You'll make a nice fur coat" when Ratchet fights her as a boss.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: There's enough hints that [[spoiler:Clank is NotHimself]] that upon seeing Nefarious [[spoiler:with Clank]], Ratchet immediately realizes [[spoiler:there's an EvilTwin about]], and promptly feels dumb for not picking up on it sooner.
--> '''Ratchet:''' Hey, Clank, look! It's Dr. Nefarious! And that butler guy! And [[spoiler:they've got Clank! They're, uh, holding you prisoner. How about that? I guess I should be feeling pretty stupid right now. I don't suppose there's any chance ''he's'' the evil Clank?]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: One side-mission in Metropolis requires Ratchet to stop explosive devices around the city. You're given a hovership to do this, meaning Ratchet disarms the highly dangerous, volatile bombs [[ViolationOfCommonSense by blasting missiles at them]].
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: The Warship boss in the Daxx docks. It pursues the player around the docks until it has them cornered just before the small holovid chamber, has no dialogue or seeming purpose, does not affect anything except its specific area of locale, is never mentioned or alluded to before or after its defeat, and no one seems to be manning it. The most that can be gathered is that it's a test of one of the weapons being developed there, but even that is never brought up or foreshadowed.
* GratuitousNinja: Invoked and lampshaded in the Annihilation Nation round "Ninja Challenge", with the apt description "Defeat all the Gladiators! Now with Ninjas!"
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: If you have a save from the first ''Ratchet & Clank'', you can get his shirtless, shoeless model from the original game as a skin.
* HiddenDepths: Lawrence plays bass guitar.
* HomingProjectile: The Tyrrhanoid Rocket Turrets fire homing missiles that will actively drop on Ratchet.
* HurricaneKick: Courtney Gears and her backup dancers.
* ImprovisedLockpick: The fifth ([[OldShame and unreleased]] InUniverse) Qwark Vid-Comic has Captain Qwark captured by a decapitated Dr. Nefarious and locked in a cell, to await the most CruelAndUnusualDeath the latter could possibly imagine. Qwark breaks himself out of the cell with the antenna on his head. [[RiseToTheChallenge But his escape did not go unnoticed]].
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: Courtney Gears.
* InnocentInnuendo:
-->'''Galactic President:''' My daughter says you're a man who's good with his hands, Ratchet.\
'''Ratchet:''' Sir, I swear, I NEVER...
* InterfaceSpoiler:
** When you first go to the sewers of Aquatos, if you look at the map, you'll probably notice some Gadgetron vendor icons floating out in the middle of nowhere, which clues you in to the fact that there's more to the sewers than you may think.
** There's one Skill Point that you get at a level called [[spoiler:Qwark's Hideout]], making it clear that a certain someone isn't actually dead.
** The game also tries to make you think the fourth Vid-Comic is the last one. However, in the Vid-Comic selection you have five slots, and like the previous example, there is a skill point to be obtained in the last comic.
* InternalRetcon: In-Universe, Qwark attempts this with the Vid-Comic series, either altering or taking out parts where he was less than heroic, going as far as attempting to eliminate the [[OldShame fifth episode]] entirely.
* ISurrenderSuckers: Nefarious pulls this on Ratchet after the first phase of his fight.
-->'''Dr. Nefarious:''' ''(melodramatically)'' *gasp* I am defeated! I have no choice *coughs* but to throw myself on your mercy!
-->'''Ratchet:''' ''(surprised)'' Really? I mean... ''(sternly)'' That's right, Nefarious! Your rein of terror is finally--
-->'''Dr. Nefarious:''' ''(flying away)'' SUCKER! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
-->'''Ratchet:''' ''(furious)'' Grrrrrrr...
* KillerRabbit: The Qwack-O-Ray turns enemies to ducks. Its V2 form causes these ducks to lay explosive eggs that can destroy enemies.
* LampshadedDoubleEntendre: Referencing Courtney Gears.
-->'''Clank:''' Her specifications were remarkable.\
'''Ratchet:''' Well, she's not the hottest pop star in the Galaxy because of her singing.
* LastChanceHitPoint: A variation of this. You can acquire the Nano Pak, which stores any supplemental [[HitPoints Nanotech]] you find when already at full health, to a maximum of 30 points. If Ratchet receives a fatal hit with some Nanotech in the Nano Pak, it's put into his health bar, allowing him to stay up a bit longer.
* LastDiscMagic:
** The Qwack-O-Ray, the game's powerful morphing weapon, cannot be bought until you reach Aridia late in the game.
** The Bouncer, the Plasma Coil and the Shield Charger can't be accessed from Slim Cognito's vendor until you reach Thran, Koros and Mylon respectively, and they're priced at a whopping 250,000 bolts apiece. Mitigating this is that you can get all three for free if you have a ''Going Commando'' save file with them.
** The extremely powerful [[InfinityPlusOneSword R.Y.3.N.O.]] cannot be bought until the player enters [[NewGamePlus Challenge Mode]], and its 3,000,000 bolt pricetag guarantees you will spend at least a big chunk of that playthrough saving up enough bolts for it.
* LaughablyEvil: Dr. Nefarious. Between his repeated breakdowns, his LargeHam tendencies, and the snark leveled at him by Lawrence, he's easily one of the funniest characters in the series.
* LimitBreak: Inferno Power, which gives Ratchet immunity to all attacks, flaming armor, and two wrenches.
* LovableCoward: The Galactic Rangers, [[spoiler:who later take a level in badass and assist Ratchet and Clank in the final battle]].
* MarathonLevel: Annihilation Nation includes an optional [[MonsterArena arena challenge]] called the Qwarktastic Challenge (that was only beaten once by Captain Qwark himself), which has 100 rounds, with the 50th and 100th ones as boss fights, and switches between rounds with different conditions encountered during previous challenges.
* MagikarpPower: Most weapons count, but the crown goes to the Disc Blade Gun, which is pretty weak at the start, but its attack power more than doubles when passing from V2 to V3 and its discs gain the ability to bounce from enemies, meaning that while V2 is hardly usable, V3 ''will'' wreak havoc.
* MostDefinitelyNotAVillain: Ratchet goes undercover with the Tyhrra-Guise.
** {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d on at least one occasion.
--->'''Tyhrranoid Guard:''' You have no clearance. How do I know I can trust you?\
'''Ratchet:''' Because I'll give you my sister's phone number, and because I'm certainly not a Lombax.
* MusicalNod:
** A few tracks are repurposed from the last two games:
*** Blackwater City and Metropolis bring back their own tracks from the first game.
*** The music that plays on Aranos when Ratchet and Clank both escape and need to free their ship is used as the normal arena battle music.
*** A slowed-down version of the Pokitaru dogfighter song is used as the arena boss theme.
*** The Drek's Fleet dogfighter track is used on Mylon as the main song.
** The music used in multiplayer is a string of tracks from this game and the prior two: Veldin - F-Sector (used in the last area of Veldin in this game), Marcadia - Operation Iron Shield (used during the Marcadia Galactic Ranger missions), Aranos - Releasing Your Ship (fairly self-explanatory), Holostar Studios - Secret Agent Clank (played during the filming of ''Secret Agent Clank''), Joraal Nebula - Leviathan (used on the ship of the same name), Kerwan - Metropolis (its main theme), Veldin Orbit - Destroying the Cannons (used in Drek's Fleet during the jet-fighting segment), Dobbo - Inside the Facility (used in the interior of Dobbo), Dobbo Orbit/Damosel Orbit (used during the Giant Clank segments), and Yeedil - Protopet Factory (used on the exterior of said factory).
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: "Ladies and gentlemen...oh, and Helga."
** Funny thing is, it fits, since she actually is miffed until she is added onto the list. Most likely because her athletic and bodybuilder tendencies cause her not to view herself as a "lady".
** Could also be because she's a robot and therefore neither.
* MyHovercraftIsFullOfEels: Failing the conversation minigame while wearing the Tyhrra-Guise can result in Ratchet saying, among other things, "Orange croutons zoom zoom butterscotch" and "[[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail I emit a noxious effluvium in your general direction]]!"
* {{Nerf}}: The Shield Charger and Bouncer both have less ammo capacity so they cannot be used as gratuitously. Inverted with the Lava Gun, which gets a ''much'' better upgrade at V5, and the Plasma Coil which, while no slouch in the previous game, gets a major power boost and more ammunition for its final version. [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]] with the Miniturret Glove, which gets less ammo but gains new abilities, such as turrets being capable of teleporting to keep up with Ratchet so that they don't become useless when the room is empty.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed:
** Courtney Gears is an obvious spoof of singers like Music/BritneySpears (in English) and Music/KodaKumi (in Japanese).
** Some also feel that the Galactic President resembles UsefulNotes/BillClinton (especially his voice).
* NoOSHACompliance: In the ''Shadow of the Robot'' vid-comic, Qwark has to trek through Dr. Nefarious' secret base on planet Magmos, which looks like a factory with lava randomly pouring everywhere. Nefarious himself [[LampshadeHanging ponders why the base is so needlessly unsafe]] ([[HypocriticalHumor ironic considering it's probably Nefarious himself who did it]]).
-->'''Nefarious:''' Who designed this place, anyway?!\
'''[[GentlemanSnarker Lawrence]]:''' Doesn't seem very practical, does it sir?
* NoRespectGuy: Poor Ratchet. People only see him as the incompetent chauffeur he plays as in "[[ShowWithinAShow Secret Agent Clank]]," despite having saved two galaxies in the past. He's also forced to do all the legwork in stopping Dr. Nefarious, and Clank and Qwark tend to reap all the credit.
* OldSaveBonus:
** If you import a ''[[VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002 Ratchet & Clank]]'' save, you'll get the "Old School Ratchet" skin, Ratchet's HalfDressedCartoonAnimal design from the first game. If your save is specifically set after completing Kalebo III, you'll also get the 10% Gadgetron employee discount mentioned in said game (the one that takes two years to kick in).
** Slim Cognito has set up shop on Aquatos and gets five weapons from ''[[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando Going Commando]]'' over the course of the game: the Lava Gun and Miniturret Glove (available immediately), Bouncer (after landing at the Thran Asteroid Belt), Plasma Coil (when reaching Koros), and Shield Charger (upon reaching Mylon). If you have a ''Going Commando'' save that owns any of those weapons, you can get them off of Slim for free rather than for a fee.
* OldShame: In-Universe, the unreleased Vid-Comic 5 is this to Qwark, as [[spoiler:it reveals that after beating Dr. Nefarious, he was knocked out by Lawrence and subsequently captured.]] It was so embarrassing for him that he attempted to end the series at the fourth part.
* PaperTiger: The [[FakeUltimateMook King Amoeboids]] may ''look'' intimidating, but they're ridiculously easy to kill, even with base level weapons.
* PeninsulaOfPowerLeveling: The sewers on Aquatos. There are ''hundreds'', if not thousands of Amoeboids throughout the level, they're easily dispatched, and they attack in narrow corridors where you can see them coming. This makes it the perfect place to level up weapons.
* PowerUpLetdown:
** The Gadgetron PDA, which allows you to buy ammo and weapons from anywhere, returns as [[LastDiscMagic a late game gadget]] that can be bought in a side area at the Thran Asteroid Belt. Unfortunately, it costs a whopping 250,000 bolts to buy, and like its first appearance, it charges ten times more for ammo and weapons than at normal vendors, and the [[OldSaveBonus Gadgetron employee discount]] is no help here. While the game's bolt economy is notably more generous than previous titles, it can still become a big bolt sink if used carelessly. To add insult to injury, you cannot use it to buy ammo for the five Megacorp weapons either (which does make sense story wise, but still).
** While the Tyhrra-Guise is a big improvement over the Hologuise, its use is extremely situational and the minigames with it can't be replayed unless you start Challenge Mode. In normal gameplay, its only effective on the tiny One-Eyed Tyhrranoids ([[ArtificialStupidity who will be fooled even if you transform out in the open]])--everything else will not be fooled. And to add insult to injury, if you take damage wearing the disguise, it does not account for the armor you're wearing, meaning you'll take even more damage than normal.
** The final upgrade to the [=RY3NO=]. Instead of shooting a volley of energy blasts, it simply obliterates everything onscreen. This creates a problem when you swing the camera, because when an enemy disappears from your view, they aren't destroyed. Another letdown is that the upgraded version isn't useful against bosses. At least its ammo is cheaper than the [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankGoingCommando Zodiac's]].
* {{Pun}}: The Skill Point for blowing up the blimp in Kerwan is called "2002 was a [[http://www.goodyearblimp.com/ good year]] in the city".
* RaisedHandOfSurvival: Dr. Nefarious' return as a robot is heralded by his robotic arm rising from a scrap heap.
* RatStomp: Rats serve as TheGoomba in the first Vid-Comic.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler:"Clank" (actually Klunk) gains these when he's been replaced by an evil version of himself, unbeknownst to Ratchet.]]
* RiseToTheChallenge: The fifth Vid-Comic features this, with a steadily rising level of boiling acid.
* RoboticReveal: Parodied when the President is interviewed following [[spoiler:the Biobliterator's attack on Metropolis]]; he claims that the galaxy being robots will positively impact his reelection campaign, then [[FaceRevealingTurn turns his head]] and claims that he's half-robot, but he's clearly wearing prosthetics.
* SetAMookToKillAMook:The Infector shoots green blobs that brainwash enemies to fight their comrades.
* SequelHook: [[spoiler:It's made very clear that Nefarious and Lawrence [[VideoGame/RatchetAndClankFutureACrackInTime survived the blast at the end of the game]].]]
* ShowWithinAShow: Secret Agent Clank and Annihilation Nation.
* ShoutOut:
** The "Mister Fister" enemy that shows up in the game's Insomniac Museum has been confirmed to be an unused enemy from ''VideoGame/SpyroYearOfTheDragon'', a previous game Insomniac worked on.
** The title of the fifth Qwark Vid-Comic ''The Shaming of the Q'' is a reference to the classic Music/KevinGilbert album ''The Shaming of the True''.
** The stage on Planet Koros is titled [[Music/TheNotoriousBIG Nefarious BFG]].
* SolidGoldPoop: Sewer crystals come "fresh from the bowels" of the King Amoeboids.
* StealthInsult: [[DeadpanSnarker Lawrence]] gives us this gem in Metropolis:
-->'''Lawrence:''' ''[To Nefarious]'' You put the "wit" in "twit", sir.
* StealthPun: When Captain Qwark first encountered the Amoeboids he immediately executed emergency response plan [[BringMyBrownPants "number 2"]].
* SummonBackupDancers: One of Courtney Gears' moves during their battle.
* SweepingAshes: Any mooks killed by the SmartBomb effect of the [[InfinityPlusOneSword RYNOCIRATOR]] will be turned into ashes.
%%* TheVoice: The Annihilation Nation announcer.
%%* ThousandYardStare: The arena announcer says Ratchet has one of these.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:The Galactic Rangers finally overcome their cowardice and come in guns blazing to assist Ratchet in the final battle. And unlike in previous missions where they "aided" you, they're much more powerful, nearly [[OneHitKill 1-shotting]] all the mooks thrown at you.]]
* UndersideRide: Captain Qwark does this on one of Dr. Nefarious' cargo ships (in a Qwark Vid-Comic flashback) which is PlayedForLaughs since he's in space without a spacesuit having to hold his breath.
* UnexpectedGameplayChange: The Qwark vid-comics. To proceed through the game, at various points you have to play through a side-scrolling platformer.
* UniqueEnemy: While there are plenty of two-eyed Tyhrranoids in the game, they're usually piloting gunships or mechas. The two-eyed Tyhrranoids that are on-foot and wield blasters only appear in the second section of Veldin.
* UnwillingRoboticisation: Nefarious's plan to turn all of the galaxy's organic life into robots.
* VileVillainLaughableLackey: An interesting variation where the villain is truly evil and a threat, but is nevertheless the target of the jokes from his lackey: Dr. Nefarious wants to exterminate all organic life, but he has a henchman named Lawrence who [[ServileSnarker isn't afraid to snark at him]].
* VillainSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6JNhWfejAQ Death to Squishies]], Courtney Gears' [[LyricalDissonance peppy little]] declaration of robotic genocidal hate.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Courtney Gears is no pushover when you fight her in the middle of the game. She won't allow you to replenish ammo at first, because the pre-battle cutscene will automatically trigger upon reaching the end of [[BossCorridor the corridor]], and unlike with [[spoiler:Masked Qwark]], Momma Tyhrranoid, and Klunk, ammo and nanotech crates only spawn whenever you enter a new stage.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Dr. Nefarious's plan is to [[UnwillingRoboticisation turn every organic lifeform in the galaxy into robots]], and he actually succeeds in doing so to Skidd [=McMarxx=] and everyone in Metropolis. Later in the game, Al is seen analyzing Skidd and remarking that it may be possible to reverse the process, but it is never really stated whether Al succeeds or not. Granted, Skidd does make a very brief appearance in the cinema at the end of the game, back to his normal self, suggesting Al did cure him and everyone in Metropolis.
* WhatTheHellHero: Near the end, Ratchet tracks down the seemingly dead Captain Qwark to his hideout and calls him out on faking his death. When Qwark reveals he went into hiding out of selfish cowardice and fear for his own life and believed it wasn't his responsiblity to decide what was right or wrong for the galaxy anymore, Ratchet is so disgusted that he cuts down Qwark with a sharp insult and walks off on him.
-->"You're pathetic, Qwark. [[DisappointedInYou I can't believe I used to look up to you.]]"
* WhoWritesThisCrap: The narrator from the vid-comics in the their game, expressing his disbelief on Qwark's supposed "adventures". Considering Qwark wrote the scripts, one can't blame him.
* WidelySpacedJailBars: There is a containment area on the Starship Phoenix with bars like these. The PlayerCharacter actually can walk between the bars, but the [[NonPlayerCharacter NPCs]] in there never think of escaping this way. To be fair though, the area is used to contain Qwark, who is much bigger than Ratchet and can't escape from it, meaning it's also a TailorMadePrison.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Clank tells Qwark just before leaving his hideout that even if he is being selfish, people still believe in him and that he has the chance to become the hero he's always wanted to be.
----
