''VideoGame/XMenVsStreetFighter'' was a huge hit, and in 1997, Creator/{{Capcom}} followed it up with '''''Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter'''''.

The Marvel roster retained ComicBook/{{Wolverine}} and ComicBook/{{Cyclops}} (and brought back [[ComicBook/XMen Omega Red]] from ''[[VideoGame/XMenChildrenOfTheAtom Children of the Atom]]'') and was extended with ComicBook/CaptainAmerica, ComicBook/SpiderMan, [[ComicBook/DoctorStrange Shuma-Gorath]], ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk, and [[ComicBook/GhostRider Blackheart]], all of whom were last seen in ''VideoGame/MarvelSuperHeroes''. The ''Franchise/StreetFighter'' side was pretty much left alone, with the exceptions of [[VideoGame/StreetFighterII Cammy]] and [[VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha Charlie]] (who were replaced by [[VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha Dan and Sakura]]). The game also featured a number of [[SecretCharacter hidden]] [[PaletteSwap character variants]], such as [[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica U.S. Agent]], [[ComicBook/GhostRider Mephisto]], an armored Spider-Man, and an alternate version of [[VideoGame/StreetFighterII Zangief]], Mecha Zangief, that couldn't block but had hyper armor (i.e. [[ImmuneToFlinching he was immune to hit stun]]) and could [[BreathWeapon breathe fire]] -- as well as Shadow (the result of Charlie being subjected to horrific experiments by Bison). The Japanese version also had an exclusive {{original|character}}: Norimaro, a JokeCharacter [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed based on]] Japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi.

The gameplay remained mostly the same as the previous game, even using the same backgrounds from ''X-Men vs. Street Fighter'', only {{remixed|Level}}. This game additionally allowed players to call their partner in for an attack without [[SwitchOutMove switching out]], which would become a staple element of the ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom'' series.

ComicBook/{{Apocalypse}} is still featured as a boss fight, but instead of fighting your partner after defeating him, the final fight is now against [[{{Cyborg}} Cyber-Akuma]], a [[ShapedLikeItself cybernetic]] version of Akuma who appears to have been somehow transported from this continuity's ''ComicBook/AgeOfApocalypse'' timeline after having been turned into one of his Horsemen.

Followed in 1998 with ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcomClashOfSuperHeroes''.
----
!WELCOME TO THE EXAMPLES!
* AdvertisedExtra: The debut of Norimaro, the result of a collaboration between Capcom and popular Japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi, was heavily advertised in the Japanese arcade flyers. Capcom clearly expected Norimaro to be a huge selling point for the game. However, Marvel were never keen on the character's inclusion, so he was removed from the Western releases of the game entirely.
* AllJustADream: Ken's ending. Ryu wakes him up before their training, and Ken notes a strange dream he had fighting alongside superheroes. Helps explain [[PowerCreepPowerSeep why he wasn't killed as soon as a Marvel hero hit him with any of their superpowers]].
* AnnouncerChatter: "'''WELCOME TO THE ADVENTURE!!!'''"
* AttractMode
* BadassBoast:
--> '''Akuma:''' ''[[AboveGoodAndEvil "There is no good or evil, only Akuma."]]''
--> '''Cyber-Akuma:''' ''[[SNKBoss "There is no greater power than me..."]]''
* BigBad: Apocalypse, with Cyber-Akuma as TheDragon.
* BilingualDialogue: All the Marvel characters speak English while all the Street Fighters speak Japanese.
* BloodKnight: Akuma. It gets worse with his Cyber self:
--> ''"Kill... Destroy... That's all I know..."''
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Omega Red's ending has [[spoiler:him killing Ryu off-screen, and Ken is kneeling next to his corpse]].
--> [[spoiler:'''Ken:''' ''"How many lives have you ended?"'']]
--> [[spoiler:'''Omega Red:''' ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure "Do you count the number of breaths you've taken?"]]'']]
--> [[spoiler:(''cue Ken's off-screen death'')]]
* CallingYourAttacks: You'd expect this with the FightingGame characters, naturally. But it even extends to the Marvel {{Superhero}}es, among others.
** '''''[[MemeticMutation BEHOLD!]]''''' '''''[[ComicBook/{{Cyclops}} OPTIC BLAST!]]'''''
** '''''[[ComicBook/CaptainAmerica FINAL JUSTICE!]]'''''
** '''''[[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk GAMMA CRUSH!]]'''''
** '''''[[ComicBook/SpiderMan WEB SWING!]]'''''
** [[LargeHamAnnouncer The Announcer]] even gets in on the fun by announcing the Hyper Combos used to win a match. Hearing the announcer yell '''SHINKUUTATSUMAKISENPUUKYAKUUUU''' at the end of a match [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments has to be heard to be believed]].
* TheCameo: Many characters from both universes make appearances in the endings and stages.
** Additionally, Sakura's intro features her classmate and BFF Kei Chitose, who sometimes dances along with Sakky in her ''Alpha'' win poses. Here, Sakura hands off her school bag to Kei, startling the poor girl. [[OhCrap Then it dawns on Kei that she's mere seconds away from the start of a superpowered throwdown]]; [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere she narrowly scampers away right as the fight begins, shrieking in horror all the while]].
** If Spider-Man is not present during a fight in the TV studio stage, he makes an appearance as Peter Parker in the background. You'll notice him by the Spider-Sense signal ringing on top of his head.
** Guile, Charlie Nash, Ghost Rider, Storm, Balrog and Elektra show up as prisoners of Apocalypse on his stage.
* CanonImmigrant: Dan's ending, keeping with his origins as [[TakeThat a parody]] of [[VideoGame/ArtOfFighting Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia]] (and Creator/{{SNK}} as a whole), spoofs [[LukeIAmYourFather the]] [[TwistEnding ending]] of ''Art of Fighting'', complete with giving him a hitherto unknown little sister to play the part of Yuri Sakazaki. [[VideoGame/StreetFighterV Nearly twenty years later]], Capcom decided to canonize Dan's sister, give her a name ('''Yuri'''ko), and let her serve as the shopkeeper for ''[[CapcomSequelStagnation SFV: Arcade Edition]]''.
* CombatTentacles: The only plausible explanation as to how Shuma-Gorath made the cut instead of Doctor Strange.
* CombinationAttack:
** Double Hypers. Notably (and much like [[VideoGame/XMenVsStreetFighter the previous entry]]), Ryu and Ken have a unique attack where Ken joins Ryu in performing a Shinkuu Hadouken.
** Zangief has two: if he's the point man, his teammate joins him in performing a Double Final Atomic Buster while in other cases he performs an enhanced Double Lariat.
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: Two Street Fighter characters get this treatment. Akuma was given some nifty cyborg upgrades by Apocalypse at the cost of his , transforming him into Cyber-Akuma.
* DeathFromAbove:
** Blackheart/Mephisto's Armageddon summons a meteor storm to the battlefield.
** The Hulk [[InASingleBound jumps into space]], and essentially pulls a passing meteor from space to drop it on his opponent.
* DenserAndWackier: ''X-Men vs. Street Fighter'' was already pretty crazy, but this game is even more so. Everything about the game is louder, bolder and goofier than before: the character portraits are more exaggerated, the returning stages are redesigned to have even more spectators, there's an extremely [[LargeHamAnnouncer hammy announcer]] who never shuts up, and the roster is full of [[JokeCharacter joke characters]] like Dan Hibiki and Norimaro (a brand new character affiliated with neither Marvel or Capcom whose presence goes completely unexplained) as well as bizarre selections like Shuma-Gorath and Omega Red. Just when you think it can't get any crazier, the FinalBoss turns out to be Cyber-Akuma!
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: Almost literally, with [[EldritchAbomination Shuma-Gorath]].
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Dan's pre-fight against Apocalypse:
--> '''Dan:''' ''"I will put the big hurt on you!"''
--> '''Apocalypse:''' ''"Who are you, posturing idiot?!"''
* ForGreatJustice: Cap's quips in his winquotes.
* GeniusBruiser: The Hulk, where he's in the guise of the Merged Hulk/Professor persona. (The Green Scar [[ComicBook/PlanetHulk had yet to be]] [[ComicBook/WorldWarHulk created at the time]].)
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: [[MemeticMutation And then suddenly, Cyber Akuma!]]
* AGodAmI:
** M. Bison. His ending has him using the same technology used in Cyber-Akuma to make [[spoiler:Cyber-Charlie]], and Bison orders him to destroy everything at will. Also, one of his winquotes:
---> ''"I shall rule all in this pathetic world!"''
** Shuma-Gorath. His ending has him starting to multiply, taking the universe with him. There's also this winquote:
---> ''"I am the eye of the storm to come!"''
** In tone with his character, Apocalypse:
---> ''"I alone prevail... You cannot stop me!"''
---> ''"I am eternal. None can withstand me."''
---> ''"I am eternal. You did not stand a chance, fool!"''
---> ''"I create history your grandchildren will read!"''
---> ''"I was the first. And I alone will be the last!"''
** One of Blackheart's winquotes:
---> ''"I shall rule the universe with my power!"''
* GuestFighter: Norimaro may technically count as an OriginalCharacter, but he doesn't represent either Capcom or Marvel in this game (unlike Ruby Heart and Amingo from ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2'' who were clearly grouped with the Capcom side of the roster) and never appeared in the series again. He actually represents the comedian and artist Noritake Kinashi, who created the character design and served as the primary basis for his appearance and persona. As such, Norimaro has a complex rights situation surrounding him, being jointly owned by Capcom, Nippon TV and Kinashi's production company Arrival.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: One of the default teams is Sakura and the Incredible Hulk.
* HulkSpeak:
** Guess who?
---> (''against Apocalypse'') ''"Hulk hates Apocalypse! HULK SMASH!"''
** Parodied in one of his own winquotes:
---> ''"Hulk Smash! Smash! Smash! Only kidding..."''
* IShallTauntYou: Dan, as always:
--> ''"Can you withstand the power of my Super Taunt?"''
* JokeCharacter: Dan (natch) and Norimaro.
* LargeHam: [[LargeHamAnnouncer The announcer]] on just about '''every K.O.''' resulting from a Hyper Combo.
* {{Leitmotif}}: A notable aversion. Like ''VideoGame/StreetFighterIII'', which was released previously that year, ''none'' of the Street Fighters retained [[BootstrappedTheme their iconic themes]] from ''[[VideoGame/StreetFighterII II]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha Alpha]]'', instead being given new music for this game. On the Marvel side, only Spider-Man, Captain America, Omega Red, Shuma-Gorath and Blackheart would keep their themes from previous outings. This was mostly amended in [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcomClashOfSuperHeroes the following game]] (save for Spidey and Cap) and completely reversed by the time of ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3''.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Dan gets some of the biggest buffs in this game. These humiliating winquotes sum it all:
--> ''"Hah, you're weak! Just like me!"''
--> ''"It's more fun to mock you than defeat you!"''
* KamehameHadoken: The second part of the trope's name comes from this series' version of the Shinkuu Hadouken, which is the best known of many, MANY, '''MANY''' instances.
* KickChick: Chun-Li.
* LightningReveal: The TrueFinalBoss gets one of these in the AttractMode.
* MadLibsDialogue:
** Beat the game to get dialogue like this before the character endings: "We make a great team (insert name here)", "We shall meet again (insert name here)."
** It also has another form of it present via the [[CombinationAttack Team Hyper]] finishes: winning a match with one combines their names together which is then displayed in a huge font. The name is tweaked depending on who was the point character at the time. For example, performing a Team Hyper with Spider-Man and Ryu (in that order) is called the "Crawler Hadouken," whereas Ryu and Spider-Man's Hyper is the "Shinkuu Assault." Works with most of them, although some of the time the end result is somewhere along the lines of "Shinkuu Miracle Treasure" or "Knee Press Star." Reaches its most ridiculous with Captain America and U.S. Agent or Blackheart and Mephisto as a team, whose Team Hyper names combine into [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment "Star Star" and "Armageddon Armageddon"]] respectively.
** Subverted with the pre-fight quotes against Apocalypse, as every character has an unique one against him.
* TheManBehindTheMan: Apocalypse, for Cyber-Akuma.
* PaletteSwap: Mephisto, U.S. Agent, and any other secret character not called Shadow. They all have different properties compared to their regular versions:
** Armored Spider-Man trades speed for [[ImmuneToFlinching super armor]].
** Mephisto has a few winquotes exclusive to him while [[IncendiaryExponent adding]] [[PlayingWithFire fire effects]] to some of his moves, which are based on his son Blackheart.
** U.S. Agent has different winquotes but otherwise plays similarly to Captain America.
** Mecha Zangief [[ImmuneToFlinching CANNOT be knocked down]] and gains a BreathWeapon special attack in the vein of Dhalsim's Yoga Flame (the Vodka Fire/Siberian Breath), but has the worst mobility in the game.
** Sunburnt Sakura is a version of her who takes after Akuma rather than Ryu. Her attacks more closely resemble her Street Fighter Alpha moveset (with a horizontal Hadouken and Shinkuu Hadouken, and no energy barrier around her Shoryuuken), and she has Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu.
* PoweredArmor: Apocalypse and Mecha-Zangief. Spider-Man's armored version is a lighter version.
* RegionalBonus: Norimaro was removed from Western releases of the game, leaving him exclusive to the Japanese version.
* {{Satan}}: Mephisto.
* {{Shotoclone}}: Aside from the 5 carryovers from ''Street Fighter'' (Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Dan, Sakura), Spider-Man, Captain America, and Cyclops qualify for this.
* ShoutOut: Check [[ShoutOut/CapcomVs the page]].
* {{Stripperific}}: On the men's side, Hulk, Zangief, and Dhalsim.
* TagTeam
* TakeThat:
** If Spidey's TakeThat against ''ComicBook/TheCloneSaga'' in ''VideoGame/MarvelSuperHeroes'' wasn't enough:
---> ''"I'm not a clone! I'm the one and only!"''
** And this winquote from Zangief:
---> ''"No one can compare to me. [[VideoGame/FinalFight Not even a mayor!]]"''
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill:
--> '''''"HYPER COMBO FINISH!"''''' [[note]]For bonus points, get this using an Otoko Michi. It's the only move you'll hear this on from a character that is not a hidden character or a boss.[[/note]]
* ThreeRoundDeathmatch: Because the [=PlayStation=] version could not fully implement the tag team system, a variant on this based on ''VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}}'' was implemented. Players were tasked with depleting an opponent's health bar a certain amount of times, with any red health restored between rounds. This was in direct contrast with [[VideoGame/XMenVsStreetFighter the predecessor]] port's traditional round system, and would later carry over to the [=PlayStation=] version of [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcomClashOfSuperHeroes the sequel]].
* TwoGirlsToATeam: Chun-Li and Sakura are the only playable females in the game.
* AWinnerIsYou: None of the secret characters get a proper ending, at least in the English version.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: ComicBook/{{Mephisto}} in this game is simply a red PaletteSwap of Blackheart, and does not in any way resemble his traditional appearance.
* YourSoulIsMine:
--> '''Mephisto:''' ''"Now I tell you a truth. Your soul belongs to me."''
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Again, the Hulk:
--> ''"Don't make me angry! You wouldn't like me..."''
