''Mario Sports Mix'', initially released in 2010 for the UsefulNotes/{{Wii}} is the SpiritualSuccessor to ''[[VideoGame/MarioHoops3on3 Mario Hoops 3-on-3]]''. Like its predecessor, it was developed by Creator/SquareEnix, and features teams of up to three characters facing off in certain sports on fields with different gimmicks. It features three new sports and one sport returning from the aforementioned ''Mario Hoops 3-on-3'': volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, and basketball.

Received its own SpiritualSuccessor in ''VideoGame/MarioSportsSuperstars'' for the UsefulNotes/Nintendo3DS, developed by Creator/CamelotSoftwarePlanning and [[Creator/BandaiNamcoEntertainment Namco Bandai]], featuring different sports.
----
!!This game provides examples of:

* AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield: The Star Ship. Especialy outside of tournaments, when crystals that you can collect rain down during the match. The Behemoth's battlefield counts as well.
* BananaPeel: This item is used for strategy purposes in all sports. It will temporarily knock out anyone who steps on it. A side effect of this is the loss of coins.
* BeehiveBarrier: The White Mage can make one in front of herself.
* BigBoosHaunt: VideoGame/LuigisMansion and Ghoulish Galleon.
* BlackMage: The TropeNamer himself appears.
* BlackoutBasement: Luigi's Mansion features pitch darkness.
* BlowYouAway: Inverted InNameOnly with Luigi in his special move, where he takes out the Poltergust 3000.
* CasinoPark: Bowser Jr. Blvd., which lacks the slot machine but has icons on the ground that affect the points when a player scores while standing on one.
* CombinationAttack: It's possible to pull one off during the battle with the Behemoth.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: No one has trouble playing in Bowser's Castle, which is located in a ''volcano''.
* CoolAirship: The Star Ship stage is an airship modeled after the ones in the classic NES and SNES ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' games.
* CrosshairAware: You can tell where your enemy is aiming their special shots.
* {{Crossover}}: Characters from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' and ''VideoGame/DragonQuest'' are available in the roster after you complete a sport. These include Black Mage, White Mage, Ninja, Moogle, Cactuar and Slime.
* DeathFromAbove: Invoked by several characters' special shots. Additionally, the [[TrueFinalBoss Behemoth]] has an attack that makes meteors rain down from the sky.
* DiskOneNuke: Sort of. It’s possible to unlock [[Franchise/FinalFantasy White Mage, Black Mage, and Ninja]] earlier than normal, all of which have very powerful special shots.
* DoppelgangerAttack: The Ninja’s special ability.
* EternalEngine: Wario Factory.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Ninja, White Mage, and Black Mage are known only by their [[CharacterClassSystem class.]]
* FinalBossNewDimension: You get teleported to a new arena for the battle with the [[TrueFinalBoss Behemoth.]]
* FlashStep: The Ninja does a few.
* FragileSpeedster: Toad, Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., and Cactuar have great speed but poor power. Cactuar in particular is ''ridiculously'' fast, with the drawback that he has a lot of inertia... which causes him trouble turning around and reaching one-step-away targets, ironically.
* GangplankGalleon: The Ghoulish Galleon is more of a DerelictGraveyard version.
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: First the ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' gang, followed by the Behemoth.
* GratuitousNinja: The Ninja from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' is a SecretCharacter who can be unlocked for play.
* GreenThumb: Toad can spawn mushrooms to hamper opponents, while Daisy does something similar with a small garden.
* GuestFighter: [[Franchise/FinalFantasy Ninja, White Mage, Black Mage, Moogle, Cactuar]] and [[VideoGame/DragonQuest Slime.]]
* HarderThanHard: The Expert level on basketball is [[{{Understatement}} pretty insane]]. It's not just harder than the Hard level: it rockets the AI to an unbelievable state, [[{{SNKBoss}} usually bordering unfair play]]. They are ''always'' getting dribbling speed boosts even when you're not anywhere close to them, it's nearly impossible to steal the ball from them due to sheer dribbling spamming (which they seemingly can do faster than you, by the way), they take advantage of every one of your cooldowns if you KO them after attempting a dunk by having another teammate do the dunk or a lay-up instead, they block 95% of your shots, they can utterly block your way to the basket so they KO you and steal the ball, chaotic alley-oops where [=KOing=] one of the dunkers allows the other one to dunk instead are everywhere, they get the ball back 50% of the time immediately after you steal them even if you're closer to the ball than them, they can force you to steal four or five times in a row alternating the holder between all possible opponents, they will get up again and again when you KO them with a power character ace shot so you don't score. As a side note, this is carried over from ''Mario Hoops 3-on-3'', where the same thing happens.
* HartmanHips: White Mage sports a thin waist and wide hips. Expect to be DistractedByTheSexy when confronting her.
* HauntedHouse: Luigi's Mansion has ghosts as obstacles who will try to steal the ball from unsuspecting players.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Red isn't exactly a stealthy color. Unless, of course, it's a dark red.
** This is also noticeable on Ninja's Shadow White alternate costume.
* HolyHandGrenade: The White Mage's specialty.
* HomingProjectile: Red Shells, which act somewhat similar to their ''VideoGame/MarioKart'' counterparts.
* InconvenientlyPlacedConveyorBelt: Wario Factory features one of these that constantly moves during the match.
* InelegantBlubbering: Luigi, Waluigi, and DK all do this should they happen to lose a match.
* InstantRunes: The White Mage uses this instead of the circle used by other characters to aim their special abilities. She also uses them in place of a dive in volleyball. They also appear when your team uses their special attack against the Behemoth.
* JackOfAllStats: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Ninja and the Miis have an average skill on all stats, making them neither slow or fast, neither strong or weak, and so on. Mario gets the prize, though, as all three stats for him are just in the middle of the skill gauge.
* JungleJapes: DK Dock, a playable court, has a wooden platform in the middle of a jungle's river.
* LethalJokeCharacter: The Tricky characters (Black Mage, Moogle, Cactuar, and Slime) usually have one stat that they excel in, while the other two are utterly awful and plain bad respectively. They make up for this by having a repertoire of strange moves up their sleeve (Black Mage), breaking their max stat (Cactuar), or having their excellent stat be one that people usually don't expect ([[GlacierWaif Slime]]).
* LimitBreak: All playable characters have a unique special ability that can only be used occasionally throughout the game by pressing the A & B Buttons on your Wiimote at the same time. There's a gauge on screen that lets the player see how much is left until the character is ready, and it slowly fills every time the player makes a certain successful action in each sport (for example, in volleyball it's when you make a stable receive).
* LongSongShortScene: The Super Star theme has a full 52 second loop to it while you only get to hear roughly 10 seconds of it in-game.
* LoopholeAbuse: In dodgeball, you can't hold the ball while you're in rival territory. Specifically, while you're ''touching it''. You can grab the ball in mid-air and throw it before landing again. This strategy was actually used by advanced players in the online metagame.
* MesACrowd: Ninja can create clones of himself in his LimitBreak.
* MightyGlacier: Bowser, Donkey Kong, Wario and Slime are very slow, but have a great power to compensate. Expect their spikes in volleyball to be pretty fast, and in basketball they can dunk very quickly and make ace shots that will knock out whoever blocks them.
* MineralMacGuffin: The Four Sports Crystals, in grand ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' tradition.
* MsFanservice: White Mage provides a significant amount of fanservice in the game, even more so than Peach and Daisy. She has a MiniDressOfPower that exposes pretty much the entirety of her [[LegFocus thighs and legs]], and has a noticeably slimmer waist than the princesses [[HartmanHips without sacrificing hips width]]. Not to mention the sensual voice acting she got.
* PalmtreePanic: Koopa Troopa Beach.
* PetalPower: Princess Daisy uses flowers for her special moves.
* PinballZone: [[VideoGame/MarioKartDS Waluigi Pinball]].
* PlayingWithFire: Black Mage notably uses a fire spell to hit out-of-reach volleyballs. Mario also uses fire in his special move of course.
* PowerCrystal: Again, a ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' tradition, presumably because the game (much like [[VideoGame/MarioHoops3On3 it's successor]]) was developed by Creator/SquareEnix.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Moogle, from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' usually does cute things and has cute expressions.
* SecretCharacter: Moogle, Cactuar, Ninja, Black Mage, and White Mage, all from ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'', as well as [[VideoGame/DragonQuest a Slime]].
* ShockAndAwe: Black Mage mostly uses thunder spells to block or stop incoming balls. He also uses it in his special move. Waluigi also fires electric balls when performing his special move.
* SuperMovePortraitAttack: Every time a character uses their LimitBreak, the camera zooms in to show their determined, furious face. You know you're screwed when it's a character who has a particularly obnoxious limit.
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: Hey... how did the AI get all those coins so quickly? This especially applies in hockey, where one goal leads near the end of a game are not safe at all. The computer will usually gather up five or six coins in a matter of 10 seconds, and then score. Now your one goal lead has turned into a five goal deficit. You're pretty much screwed after that.
* TrueFinalBoss: The Behemoth, which can only be faced when the ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' team has been defeated in every sport. A harder version, the Behemoth King, is fought in Sports Mix mode.
* WeakButSkilled: Peach, Daisy, Waluigi, White Mage, Moogle, and Black Mage, who all have high Technique ratings to make up for low power and/or speed.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' team presumably disappears after you fight the [[TrueFinalBoss Behemoth.]]
* WhiteMage: The TropeNamer makes an appearance.
* ZeroEffortBoss: Despite being the true final bosses of the game, the Behemoth and it's slightly harder Behemoth King variation are ''unbelievably easy''. The only true problem in the fight comes down to Item RNG.
