''Genetos'' is a {{freeware|Games}} ShootEmUp game with an "evolution" theme. Each level mimics a different era, going from a ''VideoGame/SpaceInvaders'' homage through the nineties and up to BulletHell, and each has an associated ship, from a simple left-and-right-moving white blob to a sophisticated weapon of mass destruction with bombs and lasers.

The set of weapons that unlocks for the player thoughout the game changes according to their playstyle, such as a sword that's enabled for staying towards the top of the screen or a boss summon ability that appears if enough hidden lives and bombs are collected.

The game can be downloaded [[https://tatsuya-koyama.com/works/games/genetos/ here.]]

!!This game contains examples of:
* AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield: Stage 5, phases 4 and 5
* BossRush: Can be done in Free Play, by choosing to skip the actual levels and go directely to the bosses.
* BossSubtitles: "The Mutant".
** Which [[FridgeBrilliance links into the "evolution" theme.]]
* BulletHell: Starts at the fourth stage. Unless you're playing in [[NintendoHard Creator mode.]]
* CharacterLevel: Your ship isn't necessarily matched to your stage, instead improving when you collect enough of the green pellets dropped by enemies.
* CrashIntoHello: Quite literal: Genetos ''smashes itself into Earth'' and then calmly introduces itself, hoping to become friends.
* CurbStompBattle: When your ship evolves in the middle of a boss fight, the rest of the encounter is like this. [[SelfImposedChallenge Some evolutions encourage you to avoid this, however.]]
** Though bosses also start using new attack patterns when you evolve, meaning it is sometimes easier to fight them before evolving.
* CuteEmUp: The very first level. The rest of the game is more standard shooter fare.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Sort of. If you get the Summon Subweapon, you'll be able to summon bosses you already defeated to help you.
* DevelopersForesight: if you were to examine the folder containing the game's music, you would notice that the songs Answer, Rebirth and Origin have both a midi[[note]] well, except for Rebirth[[/note]] version '''and''' a Platform/MP3 version. If you rename the [=MP3=]'s into the proper [=MP3=] extension and open them not only will it play in the media, but those [=MP3=]'s are actually fully tagged, as if the developer anticipates you doing that.
* EvolutionaryLevels
* EvolvingWeapon: Your playing style determines what sort of guns you get in later stages.
* FlyingSaucer: [[VideoGame/SpaceInvaders The first boss.]]
* GainaxEnding: After you get all the evolution energy in the final boss, [[spoiler:your ship fires a WaveMotionGun at the boss, practically obliviating it. You get the usual score tally, then, like all the other stages, it says, "[[AndTheAdventureContinues To the next Generation.]]"]] Bordering on NoEnding, what follows is a scene of a busy city flashing over a picture of micro-organisms and then a staff roll showing scenes of nature and city development.
** Well, as the text that reads in the Final Generation plainly states, [[spoiler:everything must come to an end. So the next generation is, possibly, just the inevitable following period of creation. After all, the [[IdiosyncraticDifficultyLevels hardest difficulty level]] [[FridgeBrilliance is called...]]]]
* GameBreakingBug: The latter half of the game is reported to be unplayable in Windows 8 [=64bit=] unless you turn sound effects off because the game will crash whenever too many sound effects play at once.
* GeniusLoci: Genetos itself.
* HitboxDissonance: Averted in the first stages of evolution, where your hitbox is noticeably larger. As you evolve, however, this trope begins to play itself out at face value.
* {{Homage}}: Each stage seems to be one, to a different series. Stage one is an homage to ''VideoGame/SpaceInvaders'', stage two is an homage to mid-80's arcade shooters like ''VideoGame/{{Galaga}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Xevious}}'', stage three is one to early-90's games like Creator/{{Toaplan}} games and the ''VideoGame/{{Raiden}}'' series, stage four is one to ''[[VideoGame/DonPachi DoDonPachi]]'' and the ''VideoGame/RaySeries'', and stage five is one to ''VideoGame/{{Ikaruga}}'' and ''VideoGame/RadiantSilvergun''.
* IdiosyncraticDifficultyLevels: Beginner, Standard User, Programmer, Hacker, and Creator.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Two highly damaging ones can be acquired. While they are tricky to aim initially (they open and close as you move) and start small they do very high damage and virtually fill the screen when used by higher level ships.
* InterfaceScrew: The motion blur feature. Even its lowest setting will make your eyes hurt after extended exposure.
* LaserBlade: Obtained if you play aggressively and get close to foes.
* MarathonLevel: The final stage is as long as the rest of the game.
* MickeyMousing: Progression of stages 4 and 5 are in sync with the music.
* OneBulletAtATime: Two bullets with the first ship, five with the second, unlimited thereafter.
* PuzzleBoss: Stage 5, Part 4. [[spoiler: You have to match the six spheres' colors by firing at them.]] However, after 100 seconds the game just skips to the next phase anyways.
* RecurringBoss: The first four bosses are described as [[BossSubtitles "The Mutant"]].
* SceneryPorn: Stages 4 and 5.
* SelfImposedChallenge: In Free Play mode, you can do things like trying to play the later stages with a Level 1 ship.
** Certain evolutions will prompt you to defeat that generation's boss with that generation's ship. In some situations, this is easier said than done.
** To elaborate, not only must you use a weaker ship to beat the boss, you must avoid collecting too many EXP power-ups during the boss itself, and all the bosses are [[MookMaker Mook Makers]]. You could try to avoid the EXP in the stage and time it out, but that's a challenge in and of itself (especially with higher-leveled ships, which tend to attract EXP).
* ShoutOut: Given this game is a tribute to {{Shoot Em Up}}s in general, it's par for the course. In particular:
** The "Laser" subweapon that fires a {{Roboteching}} BeamSpam is a reference to the ''VideoGame/RAYSeries''.
** The "Blade" main weapon functions similarly to ''VideoGame/RadiantSilvergun'''s Radiant Sword, in particular, the way they protrude out of the sides of the ship.
* SmartBomb: Five kinds of them.
* {{Trailers}}: A fan-made trailer for this game may be found [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDPoj29GSlk&index=17&list=PLSQLREUw9vwmE8HYXkE0uYgR6ur64hjIQ here.]]
* TrippyFinaleSyndrome: Which is then further enhanced by using the F5 key.
* VagueHitPoints: Regular enemies die in a few hits so a HitPoints measurement isn't necessary, unlike bosses and their {{Life Meter}}s.
