4You wake up, only to find out that you are no longer just "you" and your body is now a [[FusionDance fused hybrid]] of your original body and that of a man named Alex who likes [[HearingVoices talking to you in your head]].

6This is a ''good'' thing, as it turns out that you (Andra) and Alex planned this body synthesis in advance as a professional smuggler and espionage agent, respectively, who both need to cooperate with each other to escape from the island of Anglophone Atlantis before its dictatorial government catches up to you.

8Of course, getting off the island is easier said than done, especially when it comes to light that one of your most valuable allies has gone AWOL and some certain Atlantean officials won't let you slip away that easily. But you come armed with the most important tool of all: a letter-remover that can remove select letters from words and convert them to different words with a simple wave. And in Atlantis, the country that has Noah Webster as a national hero and "wordplay is stronger than swordplay" as one of its adages, forming the right words is the most valuable asset of all.

10So goes the premise of ''Counterfeit Monkey'', a wordplay-themed InteractiveFiction puzzle game created by Creator/EmilyShort in 2012. It took her four years to complete and has such a near-inexhaustible cache of word changes and combinations that half the fun of playing this game is seeing [[WideOpenSandbox how spectacularly you can vandalize public property with your trusty letter-remover]]. The fact that there's a lot of world-building that explores in-depth how people would adjust to living in a world where [[WordsCanBreakMyBones words can literally make and break lives]] doesn't hurt either.

15* AbominableAuditorium: The cinema is small, only has one screen, and the seats are uncomfortable. The management is lazy, the projector is small and run-down, and no food is served. Alexandra notes that the films have burst into flames multiple times. The films it shows are mostly English-dubbed foreign films, which are noted to be surprisingly popular.
16* AchievementSystem: You can earn achievements as you play through the game. While you earn points for accomplishing story objectives (beating the game will get you to 100), achievements are optional. You can get them by doing things like [[spoiler:creating a "tale" and reading it]] or [[spoiler:creating five body parts]]. The score screen at the end of the game will let you see which achievements you still have to earn.
17* TheAllegedCar: When you get your car from [[spoiler:removing letters from a chard]], it has no oil or fuel, and you need to take it to the mechanic. The car is very small (you have to squeeze into it) and it makes loud wheezing noises as you drive it.

You can also simply buy a ticket from the ticket-taker to get into the cinema instead of changing the church's thicket into one, although this does require you to have completed another puzzle first.]]
26* DifficultyLevels: You can play the game in Hard Mode which features more difficult puzzles and the removal of several useful items, but you have to specify that you want to do so very early in the game and can't switch back to normal difficulty without resetting.

He is frustrated by double entendres, such as covering "crotches" of trees or insisting that donkeys not be referred to as "asses", which are homonyms for more dirty words. 35* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: Alex's monocle is one of the most useful items in the game because wearing it lets you see the original state of all words/objects (provided they have no Origin Paste on them). There are also the Britishizing goggles which convert all American terms to British ones; not nearly as useful as the monocle, but definitely still unusual.
36* GuideDangIt: Some of the achievements are ''incredibly'' obscure and you almost certainly won't even realize that they exist without either literally trying out every single possible item change in the game or checking the source code. One example would be the "Mort Shaply" achievement that you can obtain only if you show Poe a raven-related food item; good luck figuring out that [[spoiler:creating a 'Pict' with the piano piece and t-inserter will also create a silver chain that can then be shot by the anagrammed gun to create 'ravens chili']] on your own.
37* HaveAGayOldTime: To prove to Waterstone that you can [[spoiler:create living beings with your letter remover]], you have to show him a "cock" or an "ass". It's not as naughty as it seems, since both are specified beforehand as being animals.
38* HeavyMetalUmlaut: No matter what you put in the [[spoiler:umlaut punch]], the resulting object will be described as taking the form of an unsuccessful art metal band.
39* JokeItem: A lot of what the [[spoiler:anagramming gun]] can make are silly items that you don't really have a use for. For instance, take it to [[spoiler:the Cold Storage and you can turn the "duty roster"]] into a smelly, viscous, disgusting "oyster turd". The game refuses to let you pick it up, and it serves no purpose. Other weird items you can get include "tomato Sauterne" and "multiple dropkick cancan". None of these are required to beat the game.

Some words will also be too tightly bound to their adjectives or modifier words to be changed on their own (e.g. trying to remove the letter p from a 'prickly pear' to create an ear will not work because 'pear' is too bound to 'prickly' to be changed on its own). Additionally, your letter-remover cannot create abstracts (e.g. 'sign' -> 'sin' will not work) or animates (e.g. 'coat' -> 'cat' will fail) due to government-imposed limits. [[spoiler:When you get these limits lifted later on in the game, however, anything goes!]]
42* MergingMachine: You can put two objects in the synthesizer and merge them together. For example, [[spoiler:a "pass" and a "word" will get you a password]], and [[spoiler:a "counter" and a "weight" creates a counterweight]].

54* PronounTrouble: Alex typically uses "I" to refer to himself, Andra uses "you" for herself/the player-self, and both use "we" in cases related to their shared body or actions, which can get confusing or jumbled up at points. There's also at least one instance in which Alex/Andra slip up and refer to themselves as "we" to someone else who isn't supposed to know that "Alexandra" is anything more than a single individual.
55* PurpleProse: Weaponized by the Bureau. By adding flowery adjectives to anything of importance, they've prevented you from removing letters and changing the object.
56* RecollectionSidequest: Examining certain objects will briefly trigger one of Alexandra's memories, saying "you are reminded of[...]" You can type "remember" for a flashback sequence to play out. You can see all your memories by typing "memories", and then re-remember them at will. These aren't needed to beat the game, but offer hints and backstory.
57* ResetButton: Did you change an item into something decidedly unhelpful or cumbersome? Just dab some restoration gel on it and it'll -POOF- back into its original state in no time!
58* SadisticChoice: [[spoiler:When you're trapped in the Cold Storage room and have to send out one person to be arrested by Alex's father -- do you send your boyfriend who trusts you and has stuck with you through thick and thin, or do you send one of the imprisoned people who sheds tears of joy when she thinks that you've saved her only to be recaptured when you trick her into going out? Also falls under CrueltyIsTheOnlyOption, as making the obvious selfless choice and gelling yourself so that Andra can walk out and get arrested on her own nets you a Game Over.]]
59* SecondPersonNarration: Unique in that it lacks the omnipresence of almost all other interactive fiction titles, as Alex's first-person narration is frequently interspersed with it to create a feeling of double consciousness.
60* SchmuckBait: The remover is initially set to "R" for a reason. Most failed transformations don't say anything special, but one of the first objects you see lets you get an early example of Alex's snarkiness if you fall for it.

69* UnintentionallyUnwinnable: The game is polite for the most part -- you can die, but your death is usually instant and doesn't give you time to save -- but some interpreters won't recognize the UNDO command which can make these (often quite sudden) deaths more frustrating than they were intended to be. A later version attempted to fix this by giving you the option to [[LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain assume that you never did the foolish action that led to your demise]], but it still causes glitches.
70* UseItem: Averted. Simply typing "use [item]" when it isn't obvious what that means will result in nothing happening, and you'll need to use more specific verbs like "put [item] on [place]" or "show [item] to [person]". The parser is very responsive for the most part.
