''Chantelise'' is a game made by Creator/EasyGameStation. While it is the predecessor of the more famous ''VideoGame/RecettearAnItemShopsTale'', it was similarly localized by Creator/CarpeFulgur following the commercial success of ''Recettear''.

It follows the story of two sisters: the loud-mouthed and obnoxious Chante, and her level-headed but dopey little sister Elise. When the two siblings defied the warnings and wandered outside during a red moon, Chante was cursed by a witch and [[ForcedTransformation transformed into a fairy]]. Now the two sisters are on a quest to track down the witch responsible, crack her shins open, and ''make'' her un-curse Chante.

The gameplay itself is an ActionAdventure HackAndSlash similar in style to the ''VideoGame/{{Ys}}'' games.
----
!!Tropes used by this game:

* AdamSmithHatesYourGuts: Every time you buy an item, the price for subsequent examples of that item doubles. Every time you sell an item, the sell price for that item drops by 3%.
* AlchemicElementals: Chante, with Elise's help, can use SummonMagic to temporarily acquire spirits of the four elements the fire and wind ones are named for the classic AlchemicElementals of their element: Salamander and Slyphie.
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: At one point Chante needs to go do something without the character you control, Elise (who with Chante is effectively a MagicKnight). Elma (basically a CuteWitch) unexpectedly volunteers to go along with Chante, and on the way out of town brings up that they've never traveled together and need to get used to working with each other. Chante agrees, and right as the player is expecting to start a new tutorial for controlling a magic user, Elma [[spoiler:casts a spell which ''transforms her into a near-perfect copy of Elise!'' Elma then comments in Elise's voice that by now she should have all of Elise's movements and sword skills down perfectly as well.]]
-->'''Chante (paraphrased):''' "Okay, so you've been secretly watching us for days in case [[spoiler:you wanted to look, sound, and act just like my little sister]]. Not creepy at all..."
** Head back into town to freak Chante out even more. Everybody will immediately [[spoiler:recognize Elma-as-Elise and address her as Elma (even one person who's apparently ''never met Elma'')]], and nobody will think that this [[UnusuallyUninterestingSight is the least bit unusual]].
* AppliedPhlebotinum: Fairy Dust. It's the reason that Elise can cut monsters down, because it clings to her sword and absorbs the magic in them with even a scratch, crystallizing it to make magic stones for Chante to use. [[spoiler:It also causes memory loss if overexposed and if a fairy uses up all of their dust then they die.]]
* BadassAdorable:
** Elma, a vaguely cute fortune teller "little girl" with the ability to summon a giant golem due to being the Sage of Earth. And Chante, who will cave in the shins of anyone who even thinks about hurting her sister.
** Elise who does the bulk of the combat between the two sisters.
%%* BlackMagicianGirl: Chante and Elma.
* BlueMeansCold: Freezing spells are cast by blue elemental crystals.
* BlobMonster: The various [[{{Mooks}} faceless slime monsters]] the player faces throughout the game.
* BlowYouAway: The Tornado spell, which... [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin summons a tornado to damage the target and other enemies around it]].
* BonusDungeon: Remember the "Familiar Forest" that unlocks itself very early on in the game? The only thing there is a man selling stuff (the only place you can buy an Air Crystal) and- oh look over there, right beside him! Oh wait, it's sealed. Come back after you've unlock all the secret treasure chests and a BonusDungeon awaits you...
* BossAlteringConsequence: Using the [[spoiler:fishing rod]] "weapon" on the final boss makes the Legendary Shield treasure chest appear, which can be immediately equipped. The {{Hint|System}} for the level gives:
--> This time, try humiliating them, utterly.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: The demo ends with the Chante warning the player not to pirate the game or she "WILL find you and cave your shins in."
* {{Cap}}: HP is capped at 999, and Pix is capped at 9999999. The amount of time played is also capped at 99:99:99, at which point it will roll over to 0:00:00.
* CameraCentering: Entering a level starts with the camera centered on Elise's back, but it can become a FreeRotatingCamera, rotating circularly along the X-axis alone, and can be reset to focus on Elise's back, or making the CameraLockOn to enemies.
* CameraLockOn: One of the options for the Camera. It has to be activated with a button-hold.
* CatchingSomeZs: In the Japanese version, when Chante falls asleep after the Ignan Ruins, she says "ZZZ..." to indicate that she's sleeping. The English version gives her more sleeptalking.
* ChargedAttack: The elemental crystals throughout the game (except the Air Crystal) give Elise different charged effects, depending on the element of the crystal.
* TheChessmaster: Fortuna, the previous owner of Aira's item shop.
* ColourCodedElements: The four kinds of gems you can collect for Chante to use her magic.
** [[FireIsRed Red = Fire]].
** [[WaterIsBlue Blue = Water]].
** [[WindIsGreen Green = Air]].
** [[YellowEarthGreenEarth Yellow = Earth]].
* ColourCodedForYourConvenience: After [[spoiler:Elise]] ends up in a coma. [[spoiler:Elma]] takes over and transforms into person in said coma. With a different hair colour!
* CordonBleughChef: Aira, who makes dishes like "Slime Liver Marinade" that are actually quite good until you learn what went into them.
* CriticalAnnoyance: There is a beeping sound that is played when Elise is at low health.
* CriticalHit: Elise has a very small chance to land this on the third hit of her combo.
* CrystalBall: Chante is surprised that Elma doesn't use one to help deliver her fortunes, but Elma says that's the point. She's well-regarded because she doesn't use such "cheap theatrics".
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Chante, who has green eyes and green hair.
* DeliberatelyDifferentDescription: For things that aren't fitting the general elemental set:
** The Darkness Crystal, where other crystals talk about how the sword swings are changed:
---> This crystal is shrouded in shadow and mystery... [Enables... screw it. use it at your own risk]
** The non-Elemental Emblems. The elemental emblems' FlavorText pattern is:
---> "This emblem draws on the power of [Element]. [Emblem description]"
*** Food:
----> This emblem draws on the power of ... food? Shouldn't this be a potato?
*** Coin:
----> This emblem draws on the power of CAPITALISM. Go for the gold!
* DreamingOfThingsGoneBy: Elise dreams of [[spoiler:Fortuna/Mirai's sacrifice]] after taking the medicine made from the Blue Rose.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Elma, whose choice of clothing is a purple RobeAndWizardHat as the town's FortuneTeller, and is initially presented as evil, as after she gives a fortune to the protagonist sisters and they have left her house, she's seen monologuing to herself, justifying her manipulation of the protagonists, but leaving her goals unmentioned, along with looking like a witch and a witch being the cause of the curse the sisters are trying to break. But she's not the villain here.
* DeathCryEcho: Die and the last sound will be Chante doing the classic of this.
* DigitalPiracyIsEvil: The demo ends with the Chante warning the player not to pirate the game or she "WILL find you and cave your shins in."
* DisciplinesOfMagic: There's 4 elemental lines of magic, corresponding to the 4 types of elemental gems, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, that can be harvested from the environment. Spells are made by consuming sequences of gems, up to a max of 4 gems, with the primary element for spells determined by what element is first and the rest used to raise the spell to the next form of that element, or modify it, if it's the same or different color, respectively.
* DubNameChange: [[http://www.carpefulgur.com/drakblog/?p=41 Fortuna was originally called Mirai]], but the symbolism would have been lost without the change.
* EasyAmnesia: A side effect of [[spoiler:fairy dust]]. [[spoiler:Elma]] suffers from this [[spoiler:on account of being drugged by Aira]] but doesn't realise until [[spoiler:she retraces her steps with Chante in the Aquan Ruins]].
* ElectricJellyfish: One of the bosses that can [[ShockAndAwe shoot a line of electricity]] out of its CombatTentacles.
* ElementalEmbodiment:Chante, with Elise's help, can use SummonMagic to temporarily acquire spirits of the four elements to use to aid in combat:
** [[MakingASplash Aqua]]
** [[DishingOutDirt Golem]]
** [[PlayingWithFire Salamander]]
** [[BlowYouAway Slyphie]]
* ElementalMotifs: Colored Slimes, that come in the elemental colors of Fiery Red, Watery Blue, Earthy Yellow, and Windy Green, and are hurt more by their opposing elements, but don't have any elemental manipulation abilities.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: The Air, Earth, Fire, and Water monsters take double damage from their opposites, and reduced damage from attacks of the same damage type.
* EndgamePlus: After beating the game, if you load a save made after the epilogue cutscene, you start at the point where the final level has been unlocked.
* EnergyRingAttack: Eyebats fire green energy rings.
* EssenceDrop: The elemental stones that are dropped from defeated enemies are the condensed magic of the enemies.
* EquipmentBasedProgression: Equipment is the only way to improve every stat except health, which is improved permanently through Ferromin purchased from Aira. Gloves boost strength, staves boost magical attack, shields boost physical defense, charms boost magical defense, and other items change the item drop system or add elemental resistances.
* FairyCompanion:
** Chante, obviously.
** [[spoiler:Elma was this to Aira the last time the seal weakened. In fact, this is an effect of the so-called 'curse', which]] selects [[spoiler:a pair of sisters]] and turns [[spoiler:one of]] them into a fairy.
* {{Familiar}}: Using four of the same coloured gems, Chante can summon these that follow Elise around.
** SummonMagic: Can probably count as this too.
* FishingMinigame: And it may be unique in that with no bait or lures available, Elise fishes by casting ''her older sister''. Who gets used to it.
* FleurDeLis: A fleur de lis is engraved onto both sides of the coins of Pix that are dropped from monsters.
* FreeRotatingCamera: Rotating circularly along the X-axis alone. But CameraCentering is an option, as well as CameraLockOn for enemies.
* FriendlyShopkeeper: Aira provides a home for her rescuers and feeds them. We don't see her interact with customers outside of her rescuers, however.
* GiantEnemyCrab: One of the bosses is one. To beat it, you [[spoiler:flip it over, and... [[AttackItsWeakPoint you know the rest]].]]
* GiantMook: About three or four giant blue slimes await the player in the room right before the [[MirrorMatch silhouette boss fight]].
* GrievousHarmWithABody: With a fishing pole equiped, Elise throws out Chante like bait. If an enemy is in the way, she does a small amount of damage to them.
* GuideDangIt: There's a treasure chest hidden in every area in every dungeon. Figuring out how to make it appear is rather difficult.
** And they go to lengths to rub it in - an early area contains a nice piece of equipment that will save you a few pix in it's hidden chest. By the time the HintSystem become available, you very probably already have it.
** You can fish in lava! And there are plenty of fish that can only be caught in lava lakes.
** There are spells besides just the standard 2-4 gem combinations shown in the menu, by adding in other colors you can change the effect of the spells somewhat. Red gems add power and size or extra attack power during Super Armor, Blue gems add various StatusEffects depending on how many were used, Green gems add more projectiles, and Yellow gems cause spells to penetrate enemies. For example, casting Aqua Splash, and adding in all three other colors will give you [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill three massive homing projectiles that will turn right back around and hit the target again as they pass through]].
* HeadsUpDisplay: The HUD shows currently equipped items, a LifeMeter, the ManaMeter, which is your elemental stone collection, and a LevelMapDisplay.
* HealItWithWater: The only healing spell in the game is made using [[WaterIsBlue blue crystals]] of water magic.
* HereWeGoAgain: [[spoiler:The post-credits scene, indicating that ''another'' pair of sisters have been "cursed" despite Elise and Chante breaking the ViciousCycle.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Fortuna]] pulls one [[spoiler:before the events of the game as part of her plan to destroy the ViciousCycle]], sparing [[spoiler:Elma's]] life and [[spoiler:creating the opportunity for a future swordmaiden to have ''two'' fairies]].
* HeroesPreferSwords: Elise is the hero, and she uses a sword. [[spoiler:Aira, the previous human sister in the previous cycle, also used a sword.]]
* HintSystem: The priest takes HitPoints in exchange for hints on the hidden treasures found in the ruins.
* HitPoints: You can get hit the {{Cap}} of 999 if you buy enough Ferromins.
* HomingProjectile: The Aqua Splash spell, which fires globs of water that home onto enemies.
* IceMagicIsWater: The WaterIsBlue elemental crystals allow [[MakingASplash water-based spells]], as well as freezing ice-based ones.
* ImmuneToFire: The Blazing Charm provides, in addition to a boost in general defense, a unique protection against fire element attacks.
* InevitablyBrokenRule: This is how the elder of the SiblingTeam protagonists get {{curse}}d, as said in the OpeningScroll:
-->''My memories of that night are foggy... sometimes I think to myself that it must have been a dream. But...''\
''[[gold:"Don't go out at night when the moon is red, or the witch will curse you forevermore!"]]''\
''They told us that old fairy tale so often...''\
''And on the night of the red moon, five years ago, we went outside. It felt like we were being called.''
* InfinityPlusOneSword: Either you buy the Dragon Buster from Aira after selling a Wyvern Horn, an Insect King Shell, and a Broken Seal. Or getting the Star Glove from the chest on the 50th floor of the Survival Dungeon. Both give 70 Attack.
* JackOfAllTrades: Elise is effectively this when adventuring in story mode, since you can respec her freely by changing her equipment. In practice mode, she's a little less versatile, since you need to restart the level in order to do so. You can buy or find equipment for basically anything, from giving Elise new skills to boosting her damage or changing the frequency of certain drops.
* KillEnemiesToOpen: Barriers prevent you from moving onto the next level unless you have cleared it at least once.
* LevelGrinding: You can grind for money and buy Ferromins to boost your max HP. But then, considering the fact that Ferromins cost tens of thousands (the cheapest starts out at 2000pix, but since [[AdamSmithHatesYourGuts Adam Smith hates your guts oh so much]], the cost will exceed 10000pix after buying your third one) and will reach several hundreds of thousands and possibly even millions... uhh... good luck with it, then.
* LifeMeter: You have a blue one at the top of the screen, and enemies have one below their sprite, that appears when they're hit.
* LifeDrain: The Darkness Crystal which gives Elise a charge attack that heals HP equal to the damage done but can only affect a single target.
* LittleGirlsKickShins: Chante ''loves'' to use this as a threat. She even [[TalkingInYourSleep mentions it while she sleeps]].
* MagicalAccessory: The Charms that are used as Magic Defense gear.
* MagicIsFeminine: With the exception of the villainous demon, all magic users seen in the game are female.
* ManaMeter: Your elemental stone collection at the bottom of the screen, which tells you how many stones you have, and what types can be used to cast your spells.
* ManaPotion: The elemental stones dropped from enemies give you the magic to cast your spells.
* MirrorMatch: "The Silhouette", a boss from one of the main quest's dungeons. Designed as an intense danmaku battle rather than a PuzzleBoss, using nastier patterns and summoning a double of herself as the fight goes on.
* MoneyMultiplier: The Coin Emblem multiples the value of the coins dropped by enemies, turning some of them from 10pix coins to 50pix coins.
* MoneySpider: Killing monsters makes them drop pix, and sometimes treasures or food.
* MysteriousPurple: Elma's purple [[RobeAndWizardHat witch hat and robe]], along with the purple tiled roof of her house. The mysterious color fits with her occupation as a mysterious fortune teller, and after the protagonists leave her house after being given a fortune, the player sees Elma monologue to herself, justifying her manipulation of the protagonists, but leaving her goals unmentioned.
* NintendoHard: The early game especially, where Elise is incredibly fragile, you don't have many equipment slots or choices for items to put in them, and you depend almost entirely on random food drops to recover hit points.
* {{Oculothorax}}: Eyebats, which are eyeballs that fly with bat wings.
* OminousFloatingCastle: The final level, which holds a Archdemon inside it.
* OneEyedBats: This game has monsters that are eyeballs that fly on batwings.
* OneWordTitle: The title is the {{portmantitle}} formed from the titular sisters, Chante, and Elise's names. Although, it does have a subtitle of "A Tale of Two Sisters".
* OtherworldlyTechnicolourHair: Humans that have been transformed into a fairy and reverted keep the fairy form's new hair color, which are different from human hair colors. For example, green, or silver.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: They are small {{Winged Humanoid}}s that emit fairy dust. [[spoiler:They are former humans turned into fae by being imbued with magic stones by a castle in order to seal away an Archdevil, enabling their partner to slay monsters with ease, but they die if they use up all their fairy dust]].
* OverflowError: When the game time reaches, 99:99:99, it then overflows back to 0:00:00. Also, hacking for lots of money could lead to prices, since the price of things increase every buy, to overflow into negative numbers, and buying those objects may send your Pix count to overflow as well. Although, under normal play, pix are capped at some all 9s number, before it starts overflowing, to prevent overflow.
* PaletteSwap: Golden Wyverns, which are a gold variant of the normal wyvern, the different colored (red, blue, green) bombs, slimes, eyebats, etc.
* {{Portmantitle}}: Chantelise is a {{Portmanteau}} of the sisters' names, Chante and Elise.
* PostEndgameContent: The Event Viewer is unlocked by beating the game, and the Survival Dungeon is unlocked in saves made after the epilogue cutscene.
* ProtectiveCharm: Charms are the Magic Defense gear of the game.
* RodAndReelRepurposed: You need to hit an enemy [[spoiler:who is the final boss]] with the fishing rod to get a treasure. And you can also use it as a weapon.
* ShadowedFaceGlowingEyes: What are presumably ghosts - given their {{Intangibility}} - are flying cloaks with patches of darkness for faces, yellow dots in the darkness serving as eyes.
* ShoutOut:
** On casting a certain spell: "STOP! [[Music/MCHammer Hammerball]]!"
** In the fishing minigame:
*** You've been given... THE BOOT... Aw, I [[Series/CSIMiami don't have any cool glasses]]...
*** You caught a taiyaki! Now you've seen the marvelous [[WebAnimation/WeeblAndBob breadfish]]!
*** ''WesternAnimation/FindingNemo'': You got a clownfish! Looks like we found him!
** Chante: "THE HELL DID YOU - okay, that's IT! You, me, shins, right now! [[Webcomic/SweetBroAndHellaJeff We're doing this, we're making it happen!]] Bring it!"
** To Japanese Folktale, Omusubi Kororin, a.k.a “Rolling Riceball” that leads to mice and treasure, where such a riceball rolling, is how the BonusDungeon starts, and then the final boss is Reginald Drisby, of RodentsOfUnusualSize.
* SiblingTeam: Chante and Elise are sisters, on a journey to free Chante from the curse that transformed her into a fairy. [[spoiler:It turns out that the witch's curse does this to a pair of sisters every few years, at least, until Chante and Elise stop the ViciousCycle]].
* SoundTest: An option that's partially unlocked by beating the game, and fully unlocked when you buy the Ancient Gramaphone, which is unlocked by selling the Golden Horn dropped from breaking the horns of the Golden Wyvern, who is at the bottom of the 60-floor Survival Dungeon.
* StatusEffects: Poison and Paralysis, via Poison and Paralysis Crystals, and adding Water to non-Water Spells.
* SummonMagic: See ElementalEmbodiment. It takes 4 of each gem to summon their respective spirit.
* SuperDrowningSkills: Deep water is one of several hazards -- the others being void and lava -- which instantly kill most enemies. If Elise falls into them, she gets a free trip back to the area entrance, sans some hit points.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: Demonstrated by Chante, Elise, and Elma in the Aquan Ruins, parts of which are entirely underwater.
* SupremeChef: Aira is able to make slime livers, ghost ectoplasm, killer bee larvae and [[YouDoNOTWantToKnow other horrible ingredients]] taste good. Aira isn't afraid to share what she's used. While she uses saner ingredients, Elise is implied to pretty damned good as well.
* RodentsOfUnusualSize: Reginald Drisby, the boss of the BonusDungeon.
* TalkingInYourSleep: When Chante is sleeping:
--> *snore* Mmm... Elise... I'll help you... I... prom... ... shins... fwaaaaa... *snore*
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Employed against a boss who decided to park himself some distance across a void and flick bullets at Elise.
* UnexpectedGameplayChange: Happens twice with the final boss. When switching to the second form, your SummonMagic changes so that instead of summoning it changes the boss's element and [[NighInvulnerability renders it vulnerable for a few seconds]]. Once you push him into the third form, the fight [[UnexpectedShmupLevel becomes a]] [[ZeroEffortBoss nearly unlosable]] over the shoulder BulletHell.
* ViciousCycle: The witch's curse, which afflicts one pair of sisters every few years. And the pair always effects the curse on a new pair. Until the cycle is broken.
* WaterIsBlue: The crystals for water magic, are blue.
* WhamEpisode: [[spoiler:Eventually, Elise is viciously attacked and put into a coma that no one is sure she'll recover from, forcing Elma to take up the mantle.]]
* WindIsGreen: The gems used to cast air / wind magic, are green-colored.
* YouBreakItYouProfit: You get the different varieties of Wyvern Horns by destroying them on the Wyverns you fight.
