!!The comic
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/AlanMoore drew upon a comic strip idea submission that the DC Thomson scriptwriting competition rejected in 1975. "The Doll" involved a transsexual terrorist in white face makeup who fought a totalitarian state during the 1980s.
** Moore's original idea was to set the book in the 1930s, because Dave Lloyd at the time was known for his skill in drawing automobiles from that era and for his level of "good solid research". A single letter from Lloyd upended this plan.
-->"Dave then let me know that he was sick to the back teeth of good solid research, and if he had to draw one more '29 De Soto, he'd gnaw off his drawing arm."

!!The film
* AwesomeDearBoy:
** Creator/StephenFry on being in it, specifically the idea of being beaten up on camera.
** Creator/NataliePortman had also wanted to shave her head for a while and loved the opportunity to do it on camera.
* CompletelyDifferentTitle:
** Taiwan: ''V Monster''
** Vietnam: ''Freedom Warrior''
* {{Defictionalization}}: Anonymous has adopted the Guy Fawkes motif for its protests, which apparently tickles Creator/AlanMoore enough that he's only a little annoyed that this is inspired by the movie, rather than the book. [[{{Irony}} Hilariously, the spike in sales of Guy Fawkes masks has been quite profitable for Time Warner.]]
* DisownedAdaptation: Creator/AlanMoore specifically requested that his name be removed from the film's production after Joel Silver (the producer) lied about Moore's enthusiasm for the shooting script.
* DuelingMovies: With ''Film/ChildrenOfMen''. ''V for Vendetta'' did much better at the box office.
* DyeingForYourArt: Creator/NataliePortman's head is really being shaved in that scene.
* ExecutiveMeddling: It apparently spawned the title itself. While the movie was being made, someone thought it would be a good idea to outright lie and say that Creator/AlanMoore completely supported the movie. He didn't, and made that fact known by refusing any payment whatsoever on every movie adaptation of his work afterwards, and getting his name removed from them. Good job, Joel!
* FakeBrit: Both Creator/NataliePortman (Israeli-American) and Creator/HugoWeaving (Australian). However, given V's cloudy backstory and the xenophobia of the government, V may not have been a native Brit himself. Considering Weaving actually spent a good portion of his childhood and teens living in the UK, his FakeBrit status is debatable - his accent is certainly authentic.
* HeyItsThatPlace: The disused Aldwych UsefulNotes/LondonUnderground station features extensively, both as the location for one of the biological attacks with the name "Strand" (a previous RL name for the station) and in the climax as Victoria.
* LoopingLines: Creator/HugoWeaving as V had to dub all of his lines, both because of the mask and because the character was originally played by Creator/JamesPurefoy, who left a few weeks into filming. Due to the mask, they only had to redub rather than reshoot Purefoy's scenes.
* IronyAsSheIsCast: Creator/JohnHurt, who famously played an oppressed victim of a dystopian Britain in the movie adaptation of ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour'', plays Sutler, the ruler of a dystopian Britain, here.
* OneTakeWonder: Evey's head buzzing scene was done in one take. Creator/JamesMcTeigue utilized three cameras for the scene.
* OrphanedReference: After V blows up the Old Bailey, Finch reports that they found traces of the explosives used at ''both'' sites. In an earlier draft, V blew up both Parliament and the Old Bailey in the opening.
* TheOtherMarty: Creator/JamesPurefoy was originally cast as V, but reportedly he wasn't coming across with the right performance and wasn't acting effectively through the mask, so Creator/HugoWeaving replaced him. Some scenes of V in the film are actually Purefoy in the suit and not Weaving, but with Weaving's voice dubbed over Purefoy's.
* QueerCharacterQueerActor: The film gives Gordon Dietrich AdaptationalSexuality to be a closeted gay man, possibly to accommodate Creator/StephenFry now playing him.
* TheRedStapler:
** Demands for Guy Fawkes masks for Halloween skyrocketed after the film came out. The movie was also what standardized the Guy Fawkes mask, which were typically home made before its release.
** "Eggy in a basket" became a pretty popular homemade breakfast after the film's release.
* ReleaseDateChange: It was originally scheduled to open on November 4, 2005 ([[MeaningfulReleaseDate the day before Guy Fawkes Night/the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot]]) but was delayed four months due to Warner Bros. being unsure about its box office prospects, plus needing more post production time on visual effects.
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell:
** David Lloyd revealed in 2021 that Creator/AlanMoore had actually wanted to make the comic into a movie around the time it was originally being conceived.
** Development began in 1988 when Joel Silver bought the rights to the graphic novel, as well as ''ComicBook/{{Watchmen}}''. Following the success of ''Film/RoadHouse1989'', Hilary Henkin wrote an adaptation that was singled out as one of Hollywood's best unproduced scripts in a 1993 ''Los Angeles Times article'. Her script was described as a "wild, over-the-top saga", and a cross between ''Theatre/LesMiserables'' and ''Film/AClockworkOrange''. It bears little, if any, relation to the finished product, with the inclusion of overtly satirical and surrealistic elements not present in the graphic novel, as well as the removal of much of the novel's ambiguity, especially in regard to V's identity.
** Before hitting it big with ''Film/TheMatrix'', Creator/TheWachowskis, avid fans of the graphic novel, wrote a draft screenplay in the mid-nineties that closely followed the original. They revised the screenplay during post-production of ''Film/TheMatrixReloaded'' and ''Film/TheMatrixRevolutions'' and offered the director's chair to Creator/JamesMcTeigue.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Creator/BryceDallasHoward, Creator/ScarlettJohansson, and Creator/KeiraKnightley auditioned for Evey Hammond.
