* In Chapter 4, the name of Rosa's clothing shop, Anti-Rosa, is mentioned, as well as its slogan. A quick google search reveals a blog of the exact same name, although the site's slogan is one word different from the slogan mentioned in Umineko. But it only has one post, translated (roughly) from Portuguese: "Good night. Good night, Fátima." But otherwise, there seems to be no other connection to Rosa's shop than that.
** The site can be found [[http://antirosa.wordpress.com/ here]]. The title of the article can be translated as "Anti-Laziness x Anti-Boredom".
** Also, "Our Lady of Fátima" is another name for Mary.
** "Goodnight, Fátima" is a common joke between Brazilians. Fátima Bernardes and William Bonner are the anchormen for the most popular news program in Brazil. At the end of every report, both of them say "Good Night." Very often, to express loneliness or boredom, a person can reply to them saying "Good night, Fátima" or "Good night, Bonner.". The text on the blog mirrors this dialog, whih is to say that it has nothing to do with Rosa's shop at all.
** "Anti-Rosa" may also be a reference to the Brazilian poem "Rose of Hiroshima", that talks about the atomic bomb that hit Hiroshima. The poem refers to the bomb as "Anti-Rosa Atômica" (Atomic Anti-Rose).
** The name of the clothing shop could also be a reference to the Japanese clothes brand "[[http://www.auntierosa.com/ Auntie Rosa]]", which is pronounced "Anti-Rosa" in Japanese.

* The magical text that appears in the VisualNovel when the Chiesters attack is Japanese transliterated into the Greek alphabet. If you translate it into English, you get:
-->Guidance System Version 07\
\
'''Firing Guidance System Startup'''\
Good morning.\
Welcome to the Firing Guidance System.\
\
'''Commence Data Accumulation...'''\
Now scanning. Gathering data.\
Don't shake it. If we screw up now, it won't hit.\
\
'''Formulating Firing Curve...'''\
Formulating Firing Curve. Forming as a Bezier curve.\
This is filler, so please don't read it, okay? It's random.\
All this English that I don't really understand sure is cool. Pretty awesome.\
\
'''Firing Preparations Complete'''\
Firing Preparations Complete. If we shoot now, it'll hit.\
...Assuming that the measurements are correct. Are we really good to go? It's totally automatic.\
\
'''Accuracy 97.89%'''\
A number that will almost certainly hit.
* In the anime episode 16, when Chiester 45 prepares to hit, there are a number of Russian phrases of all things, seemingly taken from a Russian-Whateverlanguage phrasebook ("Здравствуйте" - "Hello", "Желаю счастья" - "Wish you luck/happiness", "Жду вашего ответа" - "Waiting for your response", "Как Ваше здоровье" - "How is your health" and a good number of others).
* The guy who originally did the classification of the seven demons with the seven sins was Peter Binsfeld, a German auxiliary bishop and witch hunter. He was born in the 16th century in the small town of Binsfeld, in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich. He wrote a book, which was very famous at his time, Hexentraktat, in which he argues that witches do exist and explains how to find, interrogate and execute them.
* Certain "furniture" in Umineko (Ronove, Gaap, Furfur, Zepar) come from the Literature/ArsGoetia, a section of ''The Lesser Key of Solomon''.
** [[spoiler: In canon, too. Beatrice named them by flipping through the Ars Goetia, and picking out whatever sounded interesting.]]
* The magic circles used in the series (the third and fifth circle of Mars, the first circle of the moon, and seventh circle of the sun) come from Samuel Liddell [=MacGregor=] Mathers' version of ''The Key of Solomon'' (''not'' to be confused with the lesser key). Despite being pretty illegible in game, the originals do have Hebrew written on them. Also, they're called pentacles instead of magic circles.
** Mathers wasn't an original source for anything, but incorporated pre-existing traditions of sorcery into the Order of the Golden Dawn. All of ''The Lesser Key of Solomon'' was drawn from the Kaballah, one of the Hebrew holy texts.
* The references to Dante's ''Literature/TheDivineComedy'' are both obvious and subtle. While Beatrice and Virgilia are rather straightforward, more easily missed is that the Stakes of Purgatory's relative ages directly correspond to the order of the terraces in 'Purgatorio' as Dante and Virgil ascend towards the meeting with Beatrice (Pride first, then Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and finally Lust.) Clair Vaux Bernard is also later introduced, whose name refers to Dante's third guide (Saint Bernardus, also known as Bernard of Clairvaux) in the Empyrean Heaven.
** Interestingly, Clair's name can also be a reference to the wife of the real Willard Huntington Wright, who painted under the name Claire De Lisle, or a reference to Muriel St. Clair, a character from one of Wright's detective novels.
* Gaap's clothes are said to be from "Devilish Pretty". [[http://www.angelicpretty.com/ Angelic Pretty]] is an extremely popular sweet lolita clothing brand.
* Sakutaro was orginally going to be named "Sakura" by Maria, after the heroine of the popular TV show ''[[Manga/CardcaptorSakura Card Master]] [[{{Expy}} Sakura]]''.
** This is actually an anachronism, as the series debuted 1996 - ten years after the story takes place. However, a similar anachronism was made in [[VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry Higurashi]], making it also a MythologyGag.
* According to EP 6, Virgilia's full name is "Publius Virgilia Maro".
%%* I was just brushing up on my Christie... And what should I find but [[http://books.google.com/books?id=WoNE62wPkBEC&pg=PT68&lpg=PT68&dq=%22I+wouldn%27t+put+it+past+grandfather%22&source=bl&ots=cFDLJAWGan&sig=dqYoR4k2lKm9kiJv6-yyiyypiL4&hl=en&ei=0a5STZygApG4sAPo3KH4Bg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBIQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22I%20wouldn%27t%20put%20it%20past%20grandfather%22&f=false this?]]
* The words at the beginning of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=93VODUlLuRk&feature=endscreen System 0]] are taken directly from [[http://www.hark.com/clips/krmwmknhhb-believing-oneself-to-be-perfect-is-often-the-sign-of-a-delusional-mind Star Trek First Contact.]]
-->'''Data:''' Believing oneself to be perfect is… often the sign of a delusioned mind.\
'''Borg Queen:''' Small words, from a small being trying to attack what he doesn't understand.
* Many of the characters' outfits seem to have been inspired by [[https://forum.rokkenjima.org/t/ryu07s-character-design-origins-full-umineko-spoilers-image-heavy/2150 real-life Lolita fashion]].

!! Trivia Tropes

* ActingForTwo: Dialogues between Eva and EVA are an exercise of vocal squirming for Creator/MikiIto. Creator/SayakaOhara also does this with [[spoiler:Chick Beatrice and Beatrice the Elder]] in [=EP6=].
* ActorAllusion:
** Rudolf's [[Creator/RikiyaKoyama voice actor for the anime and PS3 port]] is the same as the dub voice for [[Series/TwentyFour Jack Bauer]]. This is [[ShoutOut referenced]] in the sound novel's fifth episode, where he sings the first line of Bauer's song. It's also referenced in the preview for the 16th episode of the anime, when Rudolf is making calls, has a 24 ringtone, slips up and refers to himself as Jack.
** One of the Uraneko gag specials does the same thing with Natsuhi and her voice actress Creator/EmiShinohara's famous role as [[Anime/SailorMoon another ponytailed brunette]].
** This is not the first time Creator/SayakaOhara played [[Manga/{{Xxxholic}} a witch who had a butterfly motif]] though Beatrice is more insane.
%%* AllStarCast: My, there are a lot of familiar names in this casting! It didn't prevent the anime from being a spectacular flop, though.
* CastingGag:
** It may not be deliberate, but in Episode 1, Maria says: "a witch I know told me that a miracle won't occur if everyone doesn't believe in it", a phrase often said by [[CuteGhostGirl Hanyuu]] in ''Higurashi''. In the anime and [=PS3=] port, Maria ended up with [[Creator/YuiHorie the same voice actor as Hanyuu.]]
** Beatrice is played by Creator/SayakaOhara, who is said to be the successor to Creator/KikukoInoue's role as go-to-YamatoNadeshiko actress--incidentally, Inoue plays Beatrice's mentor, Virgilia. (The [=PS3=] port adds ''Inoue's'' predecessor, Creator/SumiShimamoto, but not in any way that could take the gag further, sadly, since she plays Kasumi Sumadera and not a witch.)
* CreatorBreakdown: Whether there is any actual relation is unknown, but after Ryukishi's dear friend BT died, Umineko took on a notably different tone from [=EP6=] onwards.
* CreatorsFavorite: Ryukishi specifically mentioned Lambdadelta and Erika as being among his favorite characters to write for in an interview, and in another he said Beatrice was possibly his favorite character in the entirety of the ''When They Cry'' franchise.
* {{Defictionalization}}: There are [[http://www.umineko-france.com/t414-le-portrait-de-beato actual]] [[http://lijianliang.deviantart.com/art/Beatrice-Portrait-Umineko-157144750 Beatrice portraits]] sold as goodies.
* DevelopmentGag: In EP 8 [[spoiler:Beatrice claims that ''Land of the Golden Witch'' was her third MessageInABottle that so happened to get lost in the sea]], which refers to an Episode that was eventually scrapped in favor of ''Banquet of the Golden Witch''.
* EnforcedMethodActing: Battler's voice actor Creator/DaisukeOno was not told about the truth of the story during recordings until late in EP 5, while Beatrice's voice actor Creator/SayakaOhara was revealed to it since the beginning so that she could choose how to place her emotions into the lines.
* FanTranslation: [[http://witch-hunt.com/ Witch Hunt]], which actually got an [[http://witch-hunt.com/letter.html acknowledgment from the author]] and a ShoutOut in [=EP4=]. And it is most certainly well-deserved. Spanish and Italian translations are also available. A French one was started at some point, and the translation of Episode 1 was complete, but it got stopped for copyright issues (or something; it's not very clear).
* FlipFlopOfGod: In response to fan pressure to give up the solution, Creator/Ryukishi07 has either given the [[AWizardDidIt fantasy explanation]] or challenged them to think it through themselves. These are pretty much the same statements the characters have given. He did end up giving the solutions (or most of them) in the manga though, which now [[BrokenBase divides the fanbase]] on whether or not it was the right choice. In a 2015 panel with Ryukishi at [=ACen=], he stated that after four years of writing ''Umineko'', he became more comfortable with giving out more hints in the manga.
* FranchiseKiller: Not to the visual novel series, obviously, but the anime's lackluster reception and low DVD sales were the final nail in the coffin for the ''Umineko'' series of {{Animated Adaptation}}s, and no other [=07th=] Expansion VN was ever animated after that despite ''VisualNovel/RoseGunsDays'' often being considered a perfect candidate.
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: The anime was released in the US in 2012, but it didn't sell well so they command hefty prices online.
** Many of the older volumes in the English release of the manga (particularly the first four (or in other words Episodes 1-2) are also currently out of print (at least as of 2020), the prices aren't as bad as the Blu-Rays of the anime, but Volume 1 alone can be pretty expensive depending on where you're buying. At least it's averted with the Kindle and Comixology editions which are still available and ''much'' more affordable.
* NoDubForYou: Set to be averted with "Gold Edition". Played straight for the anime's ([[KeepCirculatingTheTapes very limited]]) US release since it was subtitled only.
%%* OtakuOClock
* TheOtherDarrin:
** As in ''VisualNovel/{{Higurashi|WhenTheyCry}}'', Okonogi is voiced by Creator/JurotaKosugi in the anime, and by Creator/KenNarita in the games.
** Kasumi is voiced by Creator/AtsukoTanaka (who also voices Kyrie) in the anime, and by Creator/SumiShimamoto in the [=PS3=] port.
** Creator/KatsuhisaHouki voices Hideyoshi from ''Saku'' onwards due to Creator/MasashiHirose's retirement from voice acting.
* PlayingAgainstType: [[ShrinkingViolet Shannon]] is one of Creator/RieKugimiya's non-{{Tsundere}} roles.
* PromotedFanboy: Witch Hunt, a fan translation project of ''VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry'', not only got a letter from Ryukushi 07, the writer of the series, thanking them for their efforts but the group was added into Episode 4 of the game they were translating.
* RealitySubtext: In Episode 8's Tea Party, Featherine Augustus Aurora briefly mentions a piece of advice given by her "old friend who is now gone". It may or may not be a reference to Ryukishi's friend BT, who had passed away the year before. Especially considering that Ryukishi is quite clearly speaking through Featherine's mouth in that scene.
* TrollingCreator: Guess who, and we love him for it too. Unfortunately his reputation as such became the cause of the rise of the now defunct [[spoiler: Rosatrice]] theory.
* VaporWare: In 2018, an UpdatedRerelease, to be published by Catbox Creative, had been hyped for Switch and [=PS4=], simply titled ''Umineko Gold Edition''. This version would do away with the poorly received Pachislot game art included in the Steam release, and replace it with the fan-favorite [=PS3=] artwork from Alchemist. It would also include a full English dub, the original Japanese voice acting, all-new content provided directly by Ryukishi07, and a free audiobook to be released on iTunes. It even boasted about one of the confirmed voice actors: Creator/LindaYoung, who voiced [[Manga/YuyuHakusho Genkai]]. Sadly, in early 2019, the Kickstarter campaign was "postponed" with a myriad of excuses, including health issues with Emily Fajardo, a mandate from 07th Expansion for silence regarding the Kickstarter campaign, and various issues. The last update was in mid-2019. There have been no updates since, and the project is presumed abandoned.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** ''Land of the Golden Witch''. Originally, EP 3 was supposed to be much more difficult than the EP 3 we got (''Banquet of the Golden Witch''). And by much more difficult, meaning much harder in difficulty than both ''Legend'' and ''Turn''. However, because Ryukishi found that many players were having trouble with ''Turn'', he decided to lower the difficulty in order to give players more of a helping hand. This was explained in game as [[spoiler:''Land'' being a message in a bottle, like ''Legend'' and ''Turn''. However, unlike ''Legend'' and ''Turn'', ''Land'' was never found, as revealed to Piece!Ange by Piece!Beato in EP 8.]] [[WordofGod Ryukishi has gone on record saying]] that he doesn't plan to release ''Land'', as he says he incorporated all the clues that were in it into other arcs, particularly [=EPs=] 5 and 6.
** One thing that was added to ''Banquet'' that wasn't in ''Land'' was the inclusion of Ronove and the inclusion of the [[UsefulNotes/SchrodingersCat Cat Box]] as hinted by Virgilia. Originally, the Cat Box discussion would've been left for an Answer Arc, which would have made [=EPs=] 3 and 4 at the least really hard for Battler to solve. Some of the things that were to be included in ''Land'' were a character named "Virgilius" who was to be a guide for Battler (like Virgilia), but who acted like Erika as a rival detective. Another is that [[spoiler:part of ''Land'' was to be purportedly narrated from Yasu's point of view, as the "baby from 19 years ago" plot thread later repurposed for ''End'' was intended to be introduced here.]] Additionally, [[spoiler: it's said that this was to be the intended first appearace of "Black Battler", Battler's EvilDoppelganger, suggesting that Battler was going to be made out to be the culprit of that game, another idea that got repurposed for the man from 19 years ago in ''End'' while ''Banquet'' ended up using a similar idea with Eva in Battler's place.]] It was said to also have had a few clues that were very important for the mystery but, because of ''Land''s exclusion, were introduced as late as EP 5 and 6 canonically. Had Ryukishi kept ''Land'' --and thus [[spoiler:Yasu]] and those "vital clues" -- he probably could have avoided [[spoiler:criticism for his execution of the mystery's answer and the mystery probably would have been considered [[FairPlayWhodunnit more fair]]]].
** The direction and tone of the novels would have been very different if it weren't for the fact that Ryukishi's friend died. Other than CreatorBreakdown, his friend was his go-to guy for advice on the plot. Tellingly, both EP 6 and EP 7 center heavily around dealing with the fallout of a loved one passing away [[spoiler:(Beatrice in both cases)]] and in the latter [[spoiler: a point is made of the person to uncover the whole truth of everything, hear Yasu's story as it is told, and understand her true character not being the person Yasu had hoped would be the one to do so, a possible reference to how BT died before Ryukishi could ever reveal to him the truth of Yasu and of the story as he'd planned out.]]
** An interview in a guidebook for Episode 8 shows that Ryukishi had planned for [[spoiler:Will to be consumed by Bernkastel's cats in order to let Lion escape, only to be brought back in [=EP8=] as Bernkastel's piece Black Will that Battler and Ange would contend with]], but then he realized that this would take away from Battler's role.
