2	* RealitySubtext: Gatsby and Daisy's relationship is not dissimilar to that of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, though it has more in common with the relationship between Scott Fitzgerald and Ginevra King.
3	* WriteWhatYouKnow: It's believed that Daisy was based on Ginevra King, Fitzgerald's ex-girlfriend who was also a rich Chicago socialite. Likewise, Tom is believed to have been based on William Mitchell, the man who Ginevra eventually married. Fitzgerald himself confirmed that Jordan was based on Edith Cummings, one of Ginevra's friends.

9	* DisownedAdaptation: Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald walked out of a screening of the 1926 silent film (the only one released during their lifetimes), which emphasized the party scenes and their scandalous elements. Zelda wrote in a letter to her daughter Scottie that it was "ROTTEN and awful and terrible and we left" (all-caps hers).

13	* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: The film is not lost like the 1926 adaptation, but good luck finding a copy. Universal apparently released a VHS in the 90s with a very small print run, and they licensed it to Madman for a DVD in Australia in 2012, but it's now out of print and hard to find. The film is also unavailable to stream anywhere (even illegally). Aside from a couple of TCM showings and festival screenings, the film has seemingly vanished off the face of the earth. Some speculate that this is due to unspecified legal issues.
14	** This all changed when in 2023, for seemingly no reason, this version of the film was rescanned from one of the original negatives (which were believed to be lost until one was found in 2012) and released as both a high-definition Blu-ray AND a multipack DVD with the 2000s made for TV feature movie.
